Step / ~ Apply a Gradated Wash

Step 2 - Sprinkle Salt Twice

Final

Start a gradated wash with a wet surface. Use a mixture of Winsor Blue, French Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson.

Sprinkle salt on the wash in three steps. When the wash is very wet sprinkle crystals across one area. Wait until the wash is damp. It will lose its shine. Apply more salt.

Just before the wash dries sprinkle the last application of salt. There should be a gradual change of texture. Do not forget to brush the salt off the surface.

Step I ~ Paint the Wash and Apply Salt

Step 2 - Paint the Weeds

Final

Paint the gradated wash with salt and allow it to dry.

Mix Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine Blue. Load the edge of your palette knife with a bead of paint. Pull the edge of the knife across the paper to leave a thin line of paint. This creates a different texture than a brushstroke. Use a no. 4 round for the weeds.

Carefully spatter the wash with paint. Use a French Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson mixture for the shadows. Remember to follow the contour of the land when painting shadows.
