I am Agni S Gangadkar. I’m in my fourth year of studies at Wadiyar Centre For Architecture Mysuru. This portfolio contains selected works from the last four years of my education (2018-2022).

My primary area of interest during my time in architecture school has been architectural design. I’m curious to learn more about these design strategies and am interested in utilising various design approaches to tackle the program.

SEM 05 I WINTER SEMESTER I 2020 Studio Guides: Prof. Nelson Pais To design an inclusive facility primarily associated with rituals and grief related to death which accommodates higher intake in times of calamities and concurrently works as a versatile and desired public space.

Returning to what is public in a building is loss and grief. an important enough emotion which can justify an entire semesters enquiry into its aspects and how architecture can play a role in mitigating them.

URBAN INTERVENTION SEM 08 I SUMMER SEMESTER I 2022 Studio Guides: Asst. Prof. HY Chinmayi The studio intends to investigate the problem of changing land uses in historical city centres, a problem which often leads to the alteration of their historical, architectural and functional physiognomy, as well as the loss of their inhabitants.

The objective was to concentrate on the importance of land management and propose a multifunctional reuse model for development in abandoned, degraded or partially used areas in historic cities. The studio proposes an inclusive space using the strategies of reuse and development and aiming toward the preservation of the historical character of the commercial centre and its sustainable development.

WORKING DRAWINGS SEM 06 I SUMMER SEMESTER I 2021 Studio Guides: Prof. Sandeep Sen Asst. Prof. Sanjay Kumar The aim is to create drawings that can communicate ideas and thoughts, enabling one to carry out certain tasks on the construction site. To determine its constructability and choose specifics, an 88 sq m occupational house is planned and technical drawings are created.

The goal of the studio was for us to visit a village and understand aspects like history, culture and people. Using these we were made to progressively derive aspects such as scale, detailing of vernacular buildings, and functions and eventually have an intervention that would complement the identity and functions of the village.

Towards bridge

Elevation 1 The entire street edge is characterised

by Jagalis strung along the length of the street which facilitate interaction and a sense of community.

Dodda Beedi is east west oriented, and slopes downward around 2.5 metres toward the river on the East. It primarily comprises of houses belonging to the Gowda (farming) community. The street is comprised of sloping roof houses made of pot tiles, some of which have later been changed to Mangalore tiles for easier maintenance.

The street is anchored by 2 wells, one at either end of the street, which became pause points during the Ratha Yatra.

The street has a temple which briefly opens every evening.

There are several other shrines which are adjacent to houses as well.

The people are closely connected also due to their occupation which is farming. Due to the small scale of the street and jaglis running on either side, the entire space feels like one common gathering point with shared ownership by these houses.

Active square due to the presence of water, sacred and a daily requirement .

It is a pedestrian pathway often converting into a space for various activities like storage,cleaning,drying of grains,for cattles,a common workspace where women sing folksongs-during work.

People in both the houses belong to farming community.

The width of the alley reduces to one-third of the street making it narrow and bringing a strong interaction between the street and the house.

Gathering occurs due to the panchayat katte.

This cluster intrestingly connects the two streets. The houses either open to the street or the central square. The large open area is used for cattles, drying grains and clothes, playing during the non -festive season.

There is a 2m drop in the contour.

The Madras Terrace house belongs to the head of the village and sits on the higher ground representing power, wealth and respect.

Closely placed jaglilis adds to this strong interaction. The jaglis and the alley together form a space enclosed by the houses for a person walking through.

These jaglis mark the transition belonging to the street as well as the house.

The Rama temple, Okhuligundi and the presence of water make this a strong, sacred and a cultural centre.

The panchayat katte , manasthambha, and the madras terrace house make this a strong administrative centre.

Old Panchayat Katte

The scale changes from street to the open squares giving a different experiential quality to the space. The movement through the cluster holds a sense of surprise due to the form of the open square.

Historically, Dodda Beedi was connected to the Panchayat Katte, which was where village meetings took place. The houses directly behind the Panchayat Katte are much larger and have larger Jagalis than other houses on the street, perhaps as a direct response to the Panchayat itself.
