Lloyds/Halifax Foundation NI Oct 16

As a successful grantee over the years, we were invited to a celebratory event held at Stormont hosted by the Halifax Foundation NI and Communities Minister Paul Givan MLA. Nearly £1.3 million was distributed to 647 grass roots charities across Northern Ireland by The Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland last year benefiting thousands of people through local projects.

A celebration of the hard work and dedication of these charitable organisations was held in Parliament Buildings in Stormont on 11th October 2016. The representatives from the groups were welcomed to the reception by the Minister for Communities, Paul Givan and MLAs representing constituencies in all six counties.

The groups supported by the Foundation provide help to thousands of people in Northern Ireland providing services such as disability support, anti-bullying projects, debt counselling, food banks, support for the elderly, drugs and alcohol awareness, early years interventions, sports programmes, community groups and so much more.

Over the past 31 years, the Foundation has distributed £33.8m to a vast range of projects aimed at improving conditions in socially deprived areas of Northern Ireland.

The Foundation receives an annual donation from Lloyds Banking Group to fund its Community Grant Programme, Matched Giving Programme and Special Initiatives Programme.

GIG NIGHT On Saturday 8 October, we held a Gig Night at the Village Hall. The brainchild of committee member Lewis Trevithick, the night was a crowd pleasing mixture of blues, soul and rock.

Tickets were very reasonably priced at just £5 each and the hall was laid out cabaret style, with space for dancing. As it was a fundraising event for the Village Hall, our insurance allowed us to make it a 'bring your own' event and most people also brought their own snacks and nibbles too!

Kicking off the evening was The House Band, fronted by William Redpath, who treated us to a mix of country, folk and soft rock and who had brought some fabulous guest musicians to play. Lewis Trevithick followed on with his solo act, singing some blues and well known favourites.

The SURPRISE act of the night was Keep 'Er Lit - a group of musicians who had come together for one night only and wowed the crowd with fantastic renditions of Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive and the Beatles' With a Little Help (From my

Friends). This was followed by a solo act by Walter Robinson, another committee member, who sang some old favourites. The evening closed with all the acts together on stage.

The dancefloor was full by the end of the night and everyone who attended said they would love a repeat!

These gifts are very gratefully received and we thank these companies for their continuing support.

An amazing £820 was raised huge thanks to you all.

Art Summer Scheme

The scheme was oversubscribed this year with 24 attending and a further 8 unsuccessful. It was an interesting and demanding drama based scheme this year that not all participants fully enjoyed.

Depending on what support might be available from Island Arts in 2017, AVH might look at running a simple arts/crafts and games scheme next year, perhaps with parents and volunteers sharing the running of the event.

Wellness Programme

Ballinderry Badminton Club

During the months of September and October there were two courses delivered on a Monday evening and Friday morning called Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds.

Each week we looked at an aspect of wellness; healthy eating, emotional balance, mental wellness, mindful movements and inspiration.

Alan McKeown of Ballinderry Badminton Club receives a cheque for £300 from David Twigg on behalf of Sport Relief. Alan said: 'On behalf of Ballinderry Badminton Club please pass on our sincere thanks to the folks in Sport Relief through Community Foundation Northern Ireland for the grant awarded to the club.

The club, as with a large number of similar organisations, is not in a strong position financially but this will really help towards our core costs such as hall rental.

We met in the loft room which is very cosy and quiet, with the smell of aromatherapy oils and relaxing music it provided an oasis from life’s normal responsibilities. To have an opportunity to experience mindful stretching and breathing exercises and enjoy a deep relaxation at the end of each class. The delivery of each health subject was informal in delivery style and highly participative and plenty of discussion. This lent well to people enjoying the company, conversation and humour of one another that created a welcome and fun learning environment. Which was evidenced in the evaluations of the participants.

We plan to deliver a follow up of the course in March and April on Monday eve 7-9pm and Friday 10-12noon, completing before Easter.

We are hoping to recruit some more younger members in the incoming year, as without youth joining the club it will simply fade out over time. We try to keep fees for our young enthusiastic folk as affordable as possible so as not to put an obstacle in their way and therefore encourage participation in a sport that has been a long running tradition in the hall'

Maintenance

Over the year there has been much vital maintenance carried out at the hall in order to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

We have installed hand-rails outside the main doors along with highlighting the main steps. The car park was swept and some marking carried out and hopefully some small irregularities will be repaired before a proper drainage system is sorted out and the car park is restored. We are also looking forward to finally getting a fully repaired and repainted front wall! The basketball backboard and hoop have been gven a new lease of life and we had an asbestos survey carried out; thankfully all is well as we have no asbestos to worry about. Thanks must go to Ken who tidies up the grounds every year and to Chris, Matt, Karol, Paul and the others who carry out various maintenance items. Thanks also to Sheila who keeps the hall in clean and tidy order. Special thanks must be given to Karol Bioalwas and Paul Simcox who have both joined ‘the team’ and to Karol especially, as he has worked very hard indeed putting various things to rights.

A Winter Wonderland for Wildlife!

At the time of writing, autumn is well and truly underway at Portmore Lough nature reserve near Aghalee. The leaves on the trees have turned gorgeous shades of browns, golds and reds, creating a stunning seasonal mosaic as they fall and line the boardwalk down to the hide.

On the lough, the whooper swans noisily herald their arrival from Iceland. Along with flocks of greylag geese, they will spend the winter grazing on the fields around the reserve, returning to roost on the lough at dusk. From a distance they don’t look very different from the usual mute swans which live here all year round but the giveaway is their sound – like the honking of an oldfashioned car horn!

Portmore Lough is home to huge numbers of wintering wildfowl which migrate from all over northern Europe.

Coots, pochards and tufted ducks all come to the lough in their hundreds. Keep a lookout for teal from the water-side hide – these small ducks have a brown head and a striking green ‘bandit’ eye-mask!

On a late afternoon walk in winter, starlings can be seen in big flocks which are known as murmurations. They twist and swirl over the reedbed before disappearing into the reedbed to roost. There are many theories as to why these birds gather at dusk and put on such a mesmerizing show. Grouping together offers safety in numbers – predators such as peregrine falcons find it hard to target one bird in the middle of a hypnotising flock of thousands. They also gather to keep warm and to exchange information, such as tips on good feeding areas!

Meanwhile tree sparrows, linnets and chaffinches feed on the seed in the crop field behind the car park, while other small birds congregate at the bird feeders.

By late winter, large flocks of lapwings and golden plovers will be feeding on the flooded meadows and can be spotted from the viewing platform at the top of the reserve.

With so much wonderful wildlife on show, winter is the perfect time to visit this haven for nature on your doorstep. All paths are wheelchair and pushchair accessible and kids will love exploring the wildlife garden and learning about the birds and beasties which live there.

Entry to the reserve is free of charge (although donations are welcome) and the car park is open 9am to 5pm.

Outside these hours, please park outside the gate and access on foot.

Join the RSPB team for a winter walk at Portmore Lough to see the spectacular wintering wildfowl, including whooper swans from Iceland. Be amazed by huge flocks of lapwing and golden plover displaying over the wet meadows. Binoculars will be provided.

This event is free for RSPB members and under 5s.

Rural Development From Ulster star – May 2016

Five local villages have been identified for rural village funding. Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, in partnership with the Rural Development Programme, carried out a scoping exercise in November 2015 through which five villages were identified for Rural Village funding. Aghalee, Drumbo, Dromara, Glenavy and Stoneyford have received support to develop village renewal plans, which will identify key projects, building on the existing fabric of the villages and enhancing the area through the implementation of the identified projects. To date village walkabout and consultation with community groups and Councillors have taken place across the five villages. Councillor Uel Mackin, Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee said: “I was very pleased with the contributions from the five local communities at the requisite community consultation events held throughout August. There was a strong commitment by all parties to bring the Draft Action Plans to fruition, which include the themes of physical, social and economic development. “The next stage of the process is a public consultation that will commence on September 10.” All interested parties will be able to view the draft plans on the Council website.

Following public consultation, the Action Plans will be finalised and initiatives will be agreed to be brought forward through funding from the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2014 -2016 delivered by Lagan Rural Partnership. Councillor Margaret Tolerton, Chair of Lagan Rural Partnership Local Action Group added: “I am delighted to announce that Lagan Rural Partnership will set aside £900,000 of funding for villages in the rural Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and Belfast City Council areas that will help revitalise the social and economic infrastructure of our rural centres of population.” To view the Draft Action Plans log on to www.lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk/business/ruraldevelopment-and-regeneration.

The next meeting was held on Thursday 21st July 2016 in Aghalee Village Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to further discuss and consult about the award of a Village Renewal Grant which had been applied for through Lagan Rural Partnership/LCCC. Aghalee is one of 5 villages awarded funds through this initiative and this meeting is to discuss possibilities to improve the village. The application had been applied for as a result of meetings carried out in 2015 and a ‘wish list’ created and based on from research prior to that meeting.

Present were Lagan Rural Partnership, ARUP Consultants, LCCC (Regeneration Department) and Village Hall representatives.

The party took a quick tour around Aghalee Village Hall facilities and discussed plans to date. Village hall representatives handed in a document prepared for the meeting with information gathered up since the last meeting in 2015. It was decided to take a walk through the village to see and take photographs at various points to support findings for possible improvements which might fall under the Village Renewal Scheme.

LEADER is a European Community Initiative for assisting rural communities in improving the quality of life and economic prosperity in their local area. The Leader approach, also known as Priority 6, is not a separate fund or set of objectives. Instead, it is a delivery mechanism through which money allocated to the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 can be spent.

Priority 6 or LEADER is the way that decisions are made about what projects are funded under the Priority 6 Schemes. The decisions are made by local people about their own areas based on the premise that they are the ones who know best what their local area needs and what projects will best fill that need. The aim of the Leader approach is to increase the capacity of local rural community and business networks to build knowledge and skills, innovate and co-operate in order to tackle local development objectives.

To make this possible Priority 6 set up ten Local Action Groups (LAGs) to deliver the LEADER Schemes on behalf of the department. LAGs are voluntary and are made up of local government representatives and social partners.

Each LAG has been allocated a rural development budget to enable them to pursue the strategic objective set out in the Local Rural Development Strategy they compiled for the area they represent.

Under this measure the first Village Renewal Meeting was held at Aghalee Village Hall in November 2015, when some hall representatives met with representatives of Lagan Rural Partnership, TADA and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council. LRP and LCCC were involved in the Village Renewal Scheme and Aghalee had been put forward as a possible recipient if it was felt there were improvements which had already been discussed over the past few years. A copy of the 2005 ADDA (Aghalee & District Development Association) report was given to the agencies. Matters discussed were points raised from this previous research including:

• The traffic calming/speed control problems through the village.

• Provision of a crossing between the hall and the housing developments along the Ballycairn Road.

• Provision of some sort of youth activity.

• Provision of additional waste bins in the area, particularly along the tow path where dog fouling is a problem.

• Provision of talks and equipment regarding home security, road safety and crime prevention.

• LRP would collate a report of the meeting and matters discussed and this would go forward to the consultancy document.

Programme 2014-2020 The timeline of events would be:

A workshop to be held in August to which representatives of the local community would be invited, either by email or letter. List of invitees – All members of AVH committee as they are representative of the general community, local shop owners, the Beeches, Surgery, BT, The Orange Lodge, Aghalee Free Presbyterian Church, Soldierstown Church and representation from Coronation Gardens to represent the historical area of Aghalee.

After this plans would be drawn up showing improvements which could be made under the Village Renewal Grant Scheme and a 3 week period of Public Consultation would take place when plans would be available to view and the Consultants would be available to take questions etc.

From this meeting the following matters were seen as priorities for the local community:

Parking, traffic congestion and speeding, Public Realm and Aesthetic Improvements, Access to the Lagan Navigation Canal, Play park and Playing field improvements, Village Hall improvements, Derelict buildings and sites, Youth facilities.

Some of these items are not related to Village renewal but are the responsibility of various agencies and the village hall is currently in negotiation with several of them.

• TransportNI regarding a possible crossing, traffic calming, resurfacing and other road and lighting related items

• Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council regarding possible solution to parking at Surgery, street cleansing, litter, dog fouling in village and on towpath, some improvements to the current state of the Playing field complex, gulley cleaning, grass cutting, weed control, verges, lampost rust from hanging baskets and bin placement.

• DCAL regarding the state of the towpath, tree cutting and Broadwater flow

• BT/Teleral/Trillium with regard to the state of the BT site, removal of barbed wire, increased maintenance, possible improvment and use of the attached field Alderman Leathem has been very proactve since the meeting and Cllr Beckett who was away at the time, has both been very supportive and we thank them for their continuing support.

At the time of press we are awaiting the final report from the public consultation in order to progress the village renewal scheme further.

Plans have been drawn up for a new Park & Ride Facility for Moira Station, which should make a real difference to the current situation.

Open Day

In the past, we've received comments that people are unaware of what goes on in the Village Hall. This is despite our best efforts to advertise on the notice-boards (one outside the hall and one at Mace Aghalee) on the website (www.aghaleevillagehall.org.uk) on Facebook (www.facebook.com/aghaleevillagehall) and in this twice yearly newsletter. We decided to hold an Open Day to showcase the various clubs and groups and this was held on 10th September. Despite our best efforts and input from all the groups and clubs, it was a very disappointing turnout from the public and the groups felt it would not be worthwhile holding another one.

Defibrillators

After a request from one of the user groups, the Village Hall committee decided to fund 2 defibrillator units plus cabinets.

One has been placed in the Village Hall and is located in the back committee room, and the other was donated to the Mace, which has longer opening hours than the Village Hall. The units were bought from Heartsine, through a contact of Jim McAnlis who was a Chairman of Aghalee & District Development Association when it was in existence, and we thank them for their assistance in providing the units. The units are fully automatic and can be safely used by any member of the community as the machine will ‘talk you through’ the actions needed to operate.

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council Rural Summer Scheme

This was a well attended scheme and appeared to be successful. We are very grateful to Paul Simcox who agreed to open and close for the week; many thanks to him.

Grahams Aghalee

We were delighted to see that Grahams of Moira had taken over Wilson's Fish & Chip shop, following it's closure this Summer.

We wish the new Grahams of Aghalee every success.

Gift Shop

Aghalee gift shop is now open above the pharmacy. Opening hours 11-3 Mon-Sat but will be extended closer to Christmas.

Stokes Garage Site

Great to see the old Stokes Garage site finally getting a clean up. Permission is underway for houses to be built on the site.

Courses and Classes Classes and groups all re-opened successfully. Some courses such as Upholstery, Hobby Art and Wellness will be running a second term in January – check the noticeboards, website and Facebook page for details.

Zumba

Numbers had been falling over the past months and we received a call from the AgeNI director assuring us that the group at Aghalee is not in danger of closure and that various in-house problems regarding changes and transport were being addressed and resolved. Aghalee Village Hall News - Winter 2016

Wag & Bone Classes Hallowe’en Fun Well, it’s that time of the year again, both handlers and dogs had a great nights craic everyone got into the “spirit” of the Halloween fun. Some dogs and handlers got into costume for the occasion and were looking great.

The training class is held each Wednesday and Friday evening, is fairly light hearted, with information on nutrition, health and obedience training for both dogs and owners.

Just having won a Novice Award.

Aghalee Taekwondo Club ATC is the only WTF club in Ireland to have a dedicated class for Children with Special Needs, our Para Taekwondo class runs every Wednesday from 3pm-3.45pm in Fleming Fulton School, Belfast.

Well done to Ben McBarron and Kyle McBrien for representing their club and country extremely well at the recent British National TaeKwonDo Championships.

Kyle won a bronze medal.

Aghalee TaeKwonDo Club’s Head Coach, Peter Wylie delivers Para TaeKwonDo training session at Fleming Fulton School, Belfast.

Aghalee Taekwondo Club hosted a training session for The United Taekwondo Association of Northern Ireland (UTANI) at Aghalee Village Hall on 8th October with high performance coach and ex-GB Olympic TaeKwonDo athlete, Andrèw Deer. It was great to see so many smiling faces training. We will definitely see Andrew again in the forthcoming seminar on 21st Jan 2017, but we are also having talks to secure Andrew’s services on a more regular basis also.

From a club perspective, we had an excellent Irish Open Championships in September.

There were 4 students competing on both days, one for Kyorugi (Sparring), and one for Poomsae (Patterns). Below is a summary of club results :

Ben McBarron - Gold in Kyorugi, Gold in individual Poomsae and Silver in Team Poomsae.

Thomas McCavigan - Bronze in Kyorugi, Gold in his Pair category in Poomsae, Silver in his Team category and Bronze in individual Poomsae.

Kyle McBrien – Silver medal in his Team category in Poomsae.

Matthew Wylie - Won the Bronze in his individual category, and the Silver in his Teams in Poomsae. Got into the final of his Pair category, only missing out on Bronze by 0.04 of a point.

All in all, a very enjoyable weekend of TaeKwonDo, and the students did brilliantly, every single one of them and in different ways.

Thanks must go to McBee’s shop in Lurgan for sponsoring the UTANI team water, fruit and snacks at this event.

Thanks also to Carol McBarron, Claire McBrien, and Susan McCavigan for taking a weekend out of their schedule to support the students.

Obituary

Hugh Kirk.

Late of Upper Ballinderry, passed away on August 23. Hugh was the husband of the late Eileen and dearly loved father of Tom and Sheena, father-in-law of Peter and grandfather to Ryan and Jamie.

Hugh Kirk was first proposed as a Custodial Trustee of Aghalee Village Hall in March 1965. This was after the death of his father, Thomas Kirk of Derryclone, who had been a Custodial Trustee since the inception of the plans for Aghalee Village Hall in 1932. Hugh served for 50 years as a Custodial Trustee, making him one of, if not the, longest serving member of the Trustees. Over the years the Custodial Trustees maintained the hall as legal owners, assisting the various Management Trustees to manage and run the hall and the numerous activities on behalf of the local community. Recently Hugh, along with the remaining ‘old’ Trustees retired from active service and agreed to transfer the hall to a number of new, younger people from the community in order to retain the hall and all it stands for, for the benefit future generations. One of these, is his son Tom. We are extremely grateful for all the legal responsibilities carried out by Hugh and his colleagues over the 50 years he was in office.

Aghalee Village Hall is available to hire for private parties and events. The Loft and Paul Green Hall are also available to hire for smaller groups or meetings.

Rates are as follows:

Main Hall: 9am to 1pm £50.

1pm to 6pm £50.

6pm to late £80.

Paul Green Hall only: as per Main Hall less 50%.

The Loft: For club use only.

Price on application.
