Words of Wisdom From Those Who’ve Been There

When it comes to planning for retirement, advice is everywhere: blogs, books, and experts. We thought, who better to ask than the people already living it?

We spoke with retirees from across Lancashire and asked them three simple questions:

1.What’s the best thing about retirement?

2 What’s been the biggest challenge?

3.What advice would you give your younger self about planning for later life?

Their answers are honest and sometimes surprising. Who better to hear from than people who’ve navigated the change and are now making the most of every day?

Watch the video below and see for yourself why their words might just change how you think about your future.

We also offer bespoke retirement planning workshops for businesses, find out more here.

Good Day Calls

A friendly voice, a lifeline of connection.

Some days can feel very long when there’s no one to talk to. A friendlyvoice, someone who asks howyou are and really listens, can make a world of difference. That’s why Age UK Lancashire’s Good Day Calls service exists. No one should feel forgotten, no matter their age or circumstances. A regular, friendly phone call can ease loneliness and make the day feel a little brighter.

More Than Just a Call

Our trained team doesn’t just “check in” they care. Each conversation is personal and unhurried. We can talk about your day, share a laugh, listen to worries, and, when needed, point you towards other services that you may benefit from, such as practical home support to social activities you might enjoy.

For some people, we may be the onlyvoice they hear that day, and for many, we ’ ve become a trusted friend on the other end of the line.

How It Works:

Who it’s for: Lancashire residents aged 65+, with priority given to those who are housebound or isolated.

What you get: Regular phone calls from our friendly team, offering companionship, and signposting to further help ifyou need it.

When we ’ re available to call: Five days a week, all year round (except Christmas week)

Cost: Free!

Because No One Should Feel Alone

We know that for some older people without regular contact from family or friends, Good Day Calls can be a lifeline, offering a sense of belonging to the outside world.

Ifyou, or someone you know, could use a friendlyvoice in their life, call 0300 303 1234 to find out more.

Community Engagement

Because help should come to you, not the other way around.

Not everyone knows where to find help. That’s whywe don’t just wait for older people to come to us; we go to them. Our Community Engagement Manager is the friendly face you’ll see at local events, community gatherings, and networking meetings, making sure that older people, their families, and our communities know exactlywhat support is available and how to get it

Why We Do It

We believe no one should miss out on the advice and services that can make later life better, but too often, the people who could benefit most simply don’t knowwhat’s out there. That’s where our community engagement initiatives bridge the gap.

How We Make It Happen

We workwith:

Local groups & clubs - Sharing information and listening to what people like you really need. Businesses & charities – Partnering to develop projects that make a real difference. Communities & networks – Joining forces to improve wellbeing and promote inclusivity.

From attending coffee mornings to speaking at forums, every conversation is a chance to connect someone with the life-changing support available to them here in Lancashire.

Action AND Awareness

Our outreach helps to:

✔ Reduce loneliness and isolation.

✔ Boost health and wellbeing.

✔ Build bridges between generations.

✔ Stand up for older people’s rights and concerns. Every interaction brings us closer to a Lancashire where older people feel seen, understood, and supported.

Living well with dementia starts with the right support.

If you ’ re caring for someone with dementia, or living with it yourself, you already know the reality:

3 in 5 people affected by dementia say they haven’t had enough support in the past year. Families often feel forgotten and exhausted while struggling to navigate confusing systems. Too much dementia care across the UK is inconsistent, with big gaps in training and quality.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Support should feel personal and consistent, and here in Lancashire, it does.

Integrated Care Programme

Independence isn’t about doing everything alone; it’s about having the right help when you need it.

This service supports people aged 50 and over who may be living with long-term health conditions, a high frailty score, or are at risk of unplanned hospital admissions. We help people access the right services and support to manage their health and wellbeing so that they can stay independent and connected in their communities

How it works

Our Personal Independence Coordinators (PICs) work alongside each person to understand what truly matters to them, their goals, priorities and aspirations. Together, they create a personalised plan around the individual’s lifestyle designed to promote wellbeing every step of the way. Over a typical 12-week support period, we focus on practical steps that make a lasting difference, addressing both physical and emotional wellbeing, and helping people regain independence.

It’s about more than care, it’s about empowerment. We help people take control, make choices that suit them, and live as independently and meaningfully as possible.

Who can access the service

This service is available to East Lancashire residents aged 50+ who are identified as being at increased risk of an unplanned hospital admission

This may include those who:

Have long-term health conditions.

Have had recent unplanned admissions.

Have a frailty score of 5 or above.

Need a high level of intervention.

Are being discharged through the Integrated Discharge Service (IDS) or directly from hospital wards.

The service operates Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm and referrals can be made by email, telephone or post. Referral forms are available in both Word and EMIS formats.
