Zillertal Alps Nature Park Dear Nature Park Enthusiast, Our Nature Park is a high alpine conservation area in the truest sense of the words. It extends from the traditional mountaineering village of Ginzling to the Hochfeiler Peak at 3,509 m. Five different sub-valleys, narrow gorges, glaciated summits, innate and cultivated landscapes as well as an extraordinary biodiversity are the defining characteristics of the „Nature Park of the Year 2015“. We invite you to discover the Nature Park together with our guides and find out more about the region. There is something to suit everyone – with hikes to the Berlin Hut, herbal walks, the Alpine Pastures Experience Zillergrund, the forest pixie day or an ascent to Mount Ahorn’s peak with Peter Habeler. We highly recommend a visit to the Nature Park House, as well as staying with one of our partner companies who work in close collaboration with the Nature Park. Guests of our partner companies can participate in all our hikes and visit the exhibition at the Nature Park House for free. The Nature Park is waiting to be discovered by you!

Presentation series „Magical Moments in the Nature Park“ Impressions, interesting facts and hiking tips for our visitors Nature photographer and Nature Park Ranger, Hermann Muigg, accompanies visitors to the most beautiful spots in the Tux Valley and tells them about the region’s special characteristics. He has captured many a magical moment with his camera. “Seen through the heart” - is how he describes the rugged, beautiful world amidst these high mountains. As Nature Park and Mountain Guide he is a hive of information on hiking in the Tux and Zillertal Alps. The “Magical Moments” presentation takes place every Monday from 20.06 - 23.09. Events 2016 “Steinbock - King of the Alps” - Thursday, 23.06.2016 The “Steinbock” (alpine ibex) is one of the high mountain region’s most symbolic animals and known as the “King of the Alps”. Its mighty horns and climbing skills are its most defining features. But that is not all. The ibex has a long tradition in the Zillertal Valley, although a somewhat eventful recent history. On this particular evening the swiss alpine ibex expert, Dr. Filli, will provide us with interesting and fascinating details on the species. Presentation by Dr. Flurin Filli: Thursday, 24th June at 20.00 hrs in the “Mehrzweckgebäude” in Ginzling, free admission.
Multi Vision show „The Zillertal and Tux Alps“ (schedule to be announced) Bernd Ritschel is a passionate photograph and often underway in the Zillertal and Tux Alps. Since his teens, he used to spend every spare minute in the alps. Meanwhile he has undertaken more than 80 journeys and expeditions to nearly all mountain regions of the globe, and wheter these were Himalayan summits, the Arctic in winter or tropical rainforests, he never left his camera at home. In his Multi vision show he will present numerous enthralling images of the fascinating alpine scenery you can discover in the Zillertal and Tux Alps. Nature Park Festival and Nature Park Hiking Day - Saturday, 20.08.2016 Nature Park Festival for visitors of all ages in the mountaineering village of Ginzling - with a guided family hike and exciting children’s and family programme in the festival grounds. Visitors can look forward to a whole host of adventure and handicraft stations, as well as the Alpine Association’s climbing tower. All five Tyrolean Nature Parks will be represented at the Zillertal Alps Nature Park 25th anniversary. But that is not all; the Life Radio team will be also be in attendance and reporting live on all the action.

25 Years Zillertal Alps Nature Park Anniversary year for Tyrol’s very first Nature Park The Tyrolean Regional Government awarded the 372 km² area encompassing the Zillertal Main Ridge, which forms the basis of the Nature Park, protected status on 2nd July 1991. The protected area was subsequently given the “Nature Park” title in 2001 and bestowed with a new name: Zillertal Alps Nature Park. Meanwhile, the protected area encompasses the municipalities of Brandberg, Finkenberg, Mayrhofen, Tux and Ginzling, incorporating a total surface area of 379 km². The Conservation and Planning Department and Section Zillertal of the Austrian Alpine Association paved the way for this great reserve on the Main Alpine Ridge. Personal on-site support of the protected area was established 1992, a novelty back then in Tyrol and a ground-breaking project that has been copied many times since. A dedicated support team was established in 1996, which steers the fate of the Nature Park to this day. Another important milestone was the opening of the Nature Park House in 2008, a multifunctional building in the heart of the Nature Park in the mountaineering village of Ginzling. In recognition of their consistent efforts, the Zillertal Alps Nature Park was voted „Austria‘s Nature Park of the Year 2015“ by an independent panel of experts from the Austrian Nature Park Association (VNÖ). Together with four other protected areas, the Zillertal Alps Nature Park now forms the largest protected area in the Alps (2,600 km²). Nature Park Rangers: The nature pros are out and about for you! Discover the special characteristics of the region with the Rangers What do Rangers actually do? The Rangers are out and about in the Nature Park twice a week in summer. Whilst underway, they inform visitors about the nature reserve and its special features: geology, glaciers, animals, plants, alpine farm life and lots more. The Rangers, however, have even more to offer. Nature Park visitors can observe and experience nature right up close at their various stations. Using binoculars and a telescope, the Rangers will help you identify otherwise invisible details both near and far: The World of Ice Giants, wild animals that live in high alpine landscapes, as well as the beauty of the alpine flora. They are, of course, more than happy to share their extensive knowledge and give advice on walks and excursions, how to behave correctly in the wild and support volunteering projects.

Clean Mountains The Rangers pay great attention to keeping the trails clean and tidy and remove any debris they may find. However, this shouldn’t be happening in the first place. Remember: waste has a long life, so take your rubbish home with you!
When and where are the Rangers underway? The Rangers are out and about along the Nature Park hiking trails often several times weekly from the middle of June to middle of September. If you know where they are working you are bound to meet up with them. Together with our four legged friends, Cusco, Nero, Bernardo and Moritz we walk leisurely along the banks of the Tux Stream from Lanersbach to Madseit. As we walk, we have plenty of time to savour the beautiful landscape with all our senses as we adopt the leisurely pace of the llamas. You will learn how to lead the llamas and get to know them a little better. On our way, we can take a step back in time at Tuxer Mühle (Tux Mill). After receiving information on the Zillertal Alps Nature Park, we walk through the Scheuling Forest, home to a particularly rich world of flora and fauna. This walk takes us through the village with its‘ assortment of historical buildings and into the protected area of the Scheuling Forest. We will then walk over the Zillersteg Bridge to Kumbichl, from where we have excellent views of the Ziller Gorge and Tuxer Gorge. Afterwards we will reach the sub-district of Dorf-Haus, which is particularly pretty with its old farmhouses. Then we will walk along the historic natural boundary, the Ziller River, to the railway station and back to the Europahaus. The nature trail is located in a protected area called the Glocke, an island full of an interesting mix of geological and botanical rarities in the Nature Park member village of Finkenberg. Only three of this type of botanical rarity has remained intact in the Eastern European Alps since the Ice Age – and one of them is here in Finkenberg! Particularly impressive is the 70 metre deep Tux Stream Gorge and the legendary “Teufelsbrücke – Devil’s Bridge. Learn some interesting facts about this very special forest, its‘ historical uses, unique plant world and extraordinary geological features. On the Trail of Climate Change
Explore the wild Gunggl Valley with a Ranger How does a glacier form, what is permafrost or global warming in relation to our Alps. What does existing vegetation tell us? The effects of global warning on our local wild game, increasing numbers of foreign species, growth displacement in the various vegetation zones and much more. Some pretty interesting themes will accompany us on this Nature Watch Tour to Gunggl. Starting from the Nature Park House, the walk leads through a beautiful forest to this ruggedly romantic high valley. From the Ziller River to the Talbach Waterfall

From Hippach-Ramsau station, we walk along the banks of the Ziller River for a short distance before turning off along the „Laimacher Waldweg“ (Laimach Forest Trail). Just above the valley floor we make our way down-valley along the forest edge, while enjoying fabulous views of the well-kept cultural landscapes of the Nature Park Region. The undulating trail leads us to the impressive Talbach-Waterfall. After crossing a bridge and following a quaint forest trail, we arrive at the residential area of the market town of Zell am Ziller. The tour ends at Zell railway station, where we can catch the train back to Mayrhofen. Meeting point:

From Sonnalm to Brandberg
Panoramic hike in cultural landscapes
We take the Ramsberg lift up to the Sonnalm and walk from there to the Kotahornalm and then on to the Karlalm. During this walk we can experience the inimitable charm of alpine farming and sample some of their delicacies: fresh butter milk, cheese or “Melkermuas” traditional pancakes. The walk then takes us to Gasthof Steinerkogel, which offers fabulous views of the Zillertal and Tux Alps. After a short break we walk through the flower filled meadows of Brandberg to the renovated Mitterstall Barn, which dates back to the 18th Century. In Brandberg we catch the bus to Mayrhofen station. From there it is possible to take the train (Zillertalbahn) back to Ramsau. Meeting point:

The Tux waterfalls thunder and roar down into the valley and an imposing natural spectacle awaits us on this walk. Deep rock basins, natural rock bridges, caves, gorges and the Schrauben Waterfall, a protected natural monument, will simply take your breath away! We will immediately be able to see the Kessel Falls at the start of the walk and then we will head up to the Schrauben Waterfall. Following a narrow forest trail, we will walk through the forest preserve and pass the so-called whales mouth, a rock formation that actually looks like the mouth of a fish. Volunteering for Nature: Project Days 2016 Bio-diverse mountain meadows in the Nature Park The Nature Park is dedicated to protecting precious natural habitats and supports local farmers in the management of their pastures and alpine farms. With this in mind, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to serve to protect nature in an honorary capacity. Our mission is to encourage people to volunteer for this good cause and spend one day of their holiday trying to help mountain farmers in their day-to-day lives. Support them together with the Nature Park Rangers in caring for their species-rich, rough pasturelands. These are an important food source for dairy farming and the basis for high quality dairy products! The acreages lie at between 1,000 and 2,000 metres above sea level in the municipalities of Brandberg, Finkenberg and Ginzling, which we will travel to via taxi. Meeting point:

Exciting journey into the history of the Pfitscher Joch

We will walk in the area around the Pfitscher Joch, a striking alpine crossing from South Tyrol to the Zillertal Valley and the site of some recent sensational Stone Age finds! During our journey back in time we will walk along the same paths used by Stone Age hunters. Back then, where you found animals, you could find people. They followed the animals, thereby ensuring heir own survival. Elevated look-out points, a Stone Age camp and former “workshops” can often be seen right next to the trail – we gain an intense insight into the lives of the mountain folk. The exciting „Boundless Pfitscher Joch “exhibition at the Lavitzalm -which we will visit - is dedicated to this theme. We can also learn interesting facts on the “eternal ice” and how glaciers have shaped the landscape. Meeting point:

The Mountaineering Village of Ginzling
Up to the Innerböden and cheese tasting at Lengauhof organic farm This hike takes us past the history-charged Fürstenhaus with its picturesque small chapel, up to the Paschbergalm and on to the Innerböden mountain guest house, where we will learn about the mountaineering village of Ginzling and its’ history. We will stop here to enjoy the quiet and stunning views of Dornauberg, before we set off back to the valley and the Exhibition „Gletscher.Welten“ in the Natur Park House in the mountaineering village of Ginzling. You will need to get up early for this tour! We will travel by minibus to the Nasse Tuxalm (1,843 m). From there, it‘s a gentle climb to the „Torseen“ (lakes at 2,258 m), where we can watch the sunrise. During this tour we will find out more about alpine farming, fresh herbs and their wonderful aroma and taste, their medicinal properties and wide range of uses – from making schnapps to delicious cuisine. Having taken some wonderful photos, the tour takes us to Ramsjoch and the Grüblspitze Peak. From here the Eggalmbahn lifts provide a comfortable descent back down to the valley. Meeting point:

Through the Forest to Panoramic Views
Forest hike to Mountain Guesthouse Steinerkogl
After the Scheuling forest we follow a path until the beautifully renovated Brandberger Chapel. The forest then gradually becomes more compact, as we meander upwards towards Steinerkogl. As we leave this mystical forest, we suddenly find ourselves amongst flower-filled meadows and have a great view of the Brandberger Kolm (2,700 m), the landmark of this little mountain village. From the Mountain Guesthouse Steinerkogl terrace (1,270 m) we can see right over Mayrhofen and its surroundings. We then stroll from Steinerkogl back down to sunny Brandberg, from where we catch the bus back to Mayrhofen. Meeting point:

Out and about with hunters in the Tux Valley

Junsalm in the Tux Valley, nestled at the foot the Kalkwand Mountain, offers some very rewarding hiking routes. The variety of plants and abundance of wild animals is unique here. A hunter will accompany you along the way to Lake Junssee and, with a bit of luck, will see chamois, marmots and golden eagle on their morning forays. You will find out more about the behaviour and characteristics of the wildlife, hunting and the evelopment of human settlements in the Tux Valley. Meet the Mountains
Neumarkter Route to the Olperer Hut We start our fabulous Panorama Route at the Schlegeis Reservoir and hike up from the Zamsgatterl to the Unterschrammachkar, always in the shadow of the mighty Schrammacher and Tux Main Ridge. From there we continue along a relatively new trail (built in 2006), to the Olpererhütte, which was also recently renovated in 2008. During an extended break, we can enjoy stunning views of the highest peaks and glaciers of the Zillertal Alps. Well refreshed, we then make our descent through forests of dwarf and Swiss-stone pine, down to the Schlegeis Reservoir, the starting point of this round tour.

From the end of the bus line at Zillergründl Reservoir, we walk a short distance along the banks of the lake before branching off on the trail to the Plauener Hut. While approaching the mountain refuge hut, we can enjoy stunning views of the peaks and glaciers around the Reichenspitz Peak. From there, we walk along the mildly undulating and solitary Hannemannweg Trail towards the end of the valley. We finally reach the magnificent alpine pastures below the Heilig-Geist-Jöchl and carry on, accompanied by wonderful views overlooking the Zillergrund, to the traditional Hohenaualm mountain hut. Alpine ibex & high alpine chapel
Hike to the „King of the mountains“ in the Ziller valley Our tour starts at Bärenbad and takes us directly to the „King of the Mountains“. At Steinbock.Welten (Ibex.World) we can find out a little more about the exciting history of these fascinating animals in the Nature Park region and even see a number of animals in their natural habitat. We then hike to the Zillergründl Reservoir, passing the High Alpine Chapel (2,250 m), which is dedicated to St. Valentine. Fabulous views over the main ridge of the Zillertal Alps is the reward for our exertions. After a break for refreshments at Gasthaus Adlerblick we take the bus from Zillergründl Reservoir back to Mayrhofen. Meeting point:

Ranger Tour to Tettensjoch
Expedition through the stages of vegetation in alpine landscapes

Accompany one of the Nature Park Rangers on a foray. We take a taxi up to around 2,000 metres above sea level near Elsalm Farm. From here, we follow a forest trail in an easterly direction, whilst savouring magnificent views over the Tux Alps, Zillertal Valley and Reichenspitz Mountains. An old hunting trail takes us high up over the alpine pastures to Tettensjoch (2,276 m). Rock glaciers, moraines and a double mountain ridge dominate the landscape. During the descent to Löschbodenalm Farm and the Höllenstein Hut (1,710 m) we traverse high grazing pastures, the dwarf shrub belt and reach the natural treeline with larch, pine and spruce. The final stage takes us along an old trail and into the sub-district of Klausboden, before heading back to Lanersbach. An exciting hike for every hobby nature photographer. Meeting point:

Nature Park Mountain Refuge Huts
In the footsteps of the Zillertal Valley’s alpine history „In defiance of the storm, refuge for the wanderer“ – this maxim is carved in stone on the gable of the imposing Berliner Hut in the Zemmgrund. Approximately one hundred to one hundred and fifty years ago, the German and Austrian Alpine Associations gradually built shelters in inhospitable alpine locations, in predominantly breathtakingly beautiful spots that are well worth making the effort to visit. Our Nature Park guides will explain how nature changes at increasing altitude levels, right up to the borders with rock and ice, where its inhabitants benefit from the situation or where nature knows its limits.

This walk takes us from Thanner Guest House through the meadows of Brandberg, along the Bergmähderweg with its‘ stunning display of flowers and up to the Kolmhaus. Along the way, we will learn a little about how very arduous it is to cultivate these mountain pastures. During an extended break, we can enjoy stunning views of the Tux and Zillertal Alps after which we will make our descent via a forest trail that leads to the Steinerkogl Guest House and on to Nature Park village Brandberg.

Following the trail of the Swiss pine
From the forest, the pastures and “hidden treasures” in the tux valley
We set off in Lanersbach from the Tux-Center, a forest road leads us to our first goal, the Höllensteinhütte (1710 m). From there we are on the traces of the Swiss pine, that has given its name to this tour. We continue our walk towards the Grieralm (1787 m) with its lovely little lake, the „Griererlacke“. From there beautiful views of the Tux Alps and the valley can be enjoyed. The walk continues at a relatively constantly level through alpine pastures to the Tulferalm (1700 m). A pleasant trail leads from there back down to the valley. In Madseit we will visit the Mehlerhaus with the Exhibition „Hidden Treasures“ (see p. 56).

Lake Eiskarsee and Hippoldspitze Peak
Hidden Gem in the Tux Alps

We will be starting our ascent to the Hippold (2,642 m), the northernmost peak in the Tux Valley, from the Vallruckalm (2,132 m) which we will conveniently travel to by hiker’s taxi. The themes of this tour range from the colonization history of the valley, mountain economy, geology and tourism, to hunting and its distinguishing features. On our way back from Hippoldjoch, we walk over lush pastures below the Eiskarspitze and Torspitze peaks, before reaching Lake Eiskarsee, a relic from the last Ice Age. The final section of our hike takes us over Nederjoch and on to the Nasse Tux-Alm (1,843 m) from where our taxi will take us back to our original starting point. To the most beautiful mountain hut in the Eastern Alps
The „ Berliner Hütte“ glacier trail in the Zemmgrund
The Berliner Hut is a popular base for mountaineers, but also for mountain and glacier researchers. Embedded in a magnificent alpine scenery, the Berliner Hut is a symbol for the history of alpinism in the Zillertal valley. Since 1997 the hut is a listed building. The deterioration of alpine glaciers is a visible indication of climate change. The most exciting part of our hike is the glacier trail in the Zemmgrund. We will hike along the themed trail between Hornkees and Waxeggkees whilst finding out many interesting facts on geology, formation of the Alps and its’ glaciers.

Alpine Hike with Peter Habeler
Join him on his favourite mountain
Which mountain sports enthusiast doesn‘t dream of doing a tour with a worldfamous alpinist, and maybe get to hear a story or two about his expeditions? With Peter Habeler, who has already climbed five eightthousand-metre peaks, you have the chance to do that. The peak of his career was the firstever ascent of Mt. Everest without additional oxygen together with Reinhold Messner in 1978. On this hike you can conquer your inner demons and climb your own “Everest”! Our tour takes you from the mountain station of the Ahorn cable car to the Edelhütte. From there, the trail leads over grassy slopes and scree fields up to a saddle where the steep, rocky steep climb begins along the western ridge, leading to the summit of Mt. Exhibitions 2016 „pfitscherjoch without borders“ Lavitzalm / Zamsergrund Pfitscher Joch is an ancient mountain pass that has been used for thousands of years between the Inn and Zillertal valleys in the North and the Pfitschertal and Eisacktal valleys in the south. This exhibition displays the results of many years of research on this mountain “saddle”. Archaeologists have manged to discover previously unknown facts on the early history of this alpine crossing. July - September: Monday & Friday open from 13.00 - 18.00 hrs, free admission! Cultur.Landscape.Worlds Mitterstall / Brandberg Cultural.Landscape.Worlds - one of the mountain farming cultural monuments in the Nature Park Region is the Mitterstall (Mitter Barn). After renovation work was completed on this listed building, Mitterstall forms the centre piece of a Nature Park exhibition called, „Brandberg – our cultural landscape through the ages“. The exhibition is spread over three rooms and tells of the harsh conditions alpine farmers had to endure, with details on the characteristic landscapes of pastures, mountain meadows and includes personal stories about the local people. Open daily in summer. Free admission!

„Steinbock.Worlds“ - Zillergrund Ibex.Worlds in Zillergrund. The alpine ibex is an animal that has a deeply rooted tradition at the Zillertal Alps Nature Park and, until recently, a very chequered history. Up until the beginning of the 17th century there was a population of several hundred animals, which was eradicated in a few years. Despite attempts to reintroduce ibex to the Zillertal Valley, only imited success has been enjoyed. A small population currently lives wild in the depths of the valleys, although seldom seen by visitors to the Nature Park. You can find out interesting information on the ibex at the Steinbock.Welten in Zillergrund, as well as enjoy the opportunity to see a few live examples up close. Open daily in summer. Free admission! „Glacier.Worlds“ - Nature Park House Ginzling This is no exhibition in the normal sense of the word: No glass showcases, no boring information boards, but rather interactive, multimedia stations with a hands-on approach: see, touch and comprehend. The public Alpine Library is also located in the house. A small selection of books and maps as well as Nature Park gifts with our „Zillertaler Gletscherfloh“ logo is available for sale at the Nature Park Shop. ...
