Building bold brand experiences Architecture Interior design 3D rendering Spatial strategy

AMERICAN APPAREL – THE AART GALLERY

Based in Montreal, LG2 Architecture specializes in the design of memorable brand environments. Its strength lies in a multidisciplinary vision of spatial design and a close-knit collaboration with LG2’s integrated teams. Every project goes beyond aesthetic and practical aspects to create a seamless experience.

Customer and employee experiences Branding and graphic design Branded content Digital experiences

LG2 Architecture’s projects are deeply rooted in the DNA of the brands it partners with. Its collaboration with American Apparel is but one example. The clothing retailer wanted to take advantage of the decorated apparel industry’s largest trade show, Impressions Expo, to make its comeback. In a sea of trade show booths, the AArt Gallery stood above the rest by proposing a premium brand experience: a museum-like tour of a single product – the iconic Black 2001 tee. Upon entering the space, visitors were fully immersed in the black-and-white world of American Apparel. The exterior was dressed in AA’s striking new branding, making the gallery stand out in the chaotic trade show environment. Learn more about the team and its projects at lg2architecture.com.

A Unique Perspective

FROM THE HEIGHTS OF THE LOWER TOWN With floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides, the spaces are bathed in light and offer spectacular views of Quebec City: the Palais station, the Old Port of Quebec, and the lower town. The concept capitalizes on these assets with a design that maximizes the views and brings in as much natural light as possible to both private and public areas.

At the heart of Quebec's Old Port, the new premises of the Fasken law firm reflect a modern and youthful ambiance while maintaining a prestigious and refined appearance.

ALIGNING NEEDS The layout designed by LemayMichaud is organized within a triangular space. The lawyers' offices, grouped in secure areas, are arranged in a row along a facade. This allows light to generously penetrate to the heart of the building. As for the public areas, they are grouped and arranged in the remaining spacious and luminous space. YOUNG & YELLOW Here, communication between floors is facilitated through a monumental architectural staircase, curved within a cube of yellow-tinted glass. It connects the three levels in the public space and creates both a visual and physical opening. Thus, it stands proudly at the center of the project, drawing attention with its vibrant and dynamic color. The rest of the spaces are designed in a minimalist style, emphasizing the contrast between black and white, ensuring the location's longevity and the spaces' elegance. Playful cubic volumes in black or white carve out the vast areas to form sub-spaces, thus creating a distinct demarcation in the work zones. BLACK & WHITE Imparting a more human scale to the immense spaces, the office-side ambiances have been treated in a more subdued manner. Black and white finishes are sometimes treated in textures of slats or wallpaper, playing with natural light to accentuate reliefs with modernity and sobriety. As for the lawyers' library, a mythical place in the profession, it asserts itself in a tongue-incheek concept that includes retro lamps, weathered wood, and an antique table.

36 | INTÉRIEURS 90

Here is a splendid appropriation and a unique signature of the space! It's both warm and luxurious, with an enticing mix of textures. A library corner that perfectly evokes the suave and hushed past reminiscent of Mad Men.

Cultivating Creativity

Situated in the heart of the Solar district in Brossard, the new headquarters of this food giant stems from a series of creative and participatory workshops involving Nortera employees, all supervised by the Lemay team. THE B STATION Named "Station B," the project illustrates how a human-centered workplace design strategy can contribute to the well-being and health of its occupants. Adapted to both the current demands of the job market and the surveyed users' personal needs and preferences, the variety of workspaces is supported by its collection of individual and collaborative work opportunities. THE ECOSYSTEM OF A TREE The station evokes the ecosystem of a tree where, in this case, it is the individuals who inhabit it that constitute its soul, destined to thrive and flourish within a healthy and unifying work environment. STAIRWAY TO GARDEN Moreover, an imposing staircase, graced with a touch of green, connects the four floors of the structure. The integration of modular plantings adds dynamism and life, quite literally, to the workspace. THE ECOSYSTEM OF A TREE The station invokes the ecosystem of a tree where, in this case, it is the individuals who inhabit it that make up its soul, destined to thrive and flourish within a healthy and unifying work environment.

A FIRST OF ITS KIND It becomes the very first of Teknion's showrooms to achieve LEED and WELL Platinum certifications, a testament to the brand's commitment to creating healthier spaces for its employees and customers. A LEED LEADER Certified LEED Platinum, the Teknion Montréal space notably scores points for its proximity to public transportation and its connection to the local community, its efficient lighting and basic building heating systems, and its low-emission products.

The Teknion showroom in Montreal is designed as a living laboratory, a place for presentation and discussion about workplace options, a place to explore the possibilities of a better future.

WELL-BEING & COMFORT Combining design and conceptual vision, Teknion creates a space that not only integrates values of heritage, place, and inclusion, but also principles of sustainability. This prime environment emphasizes the health and well-being of its users, positioning itself as an ambassador for the WELL certification in Montreal. The space showcases optimizing features, including air, water, nutrition, light, movement, and thermal comfort quality, as well as sound, materials, mind, and community. It also features a selection of artworks and light fixtures designed and manufactured locally.

Fostering the Future

The Université du Québec in Trois-Rivières (UQTR) expanded its Drummondville campus with the National Integrated Center for Intelligent Manufacturing (CNIMI), connected to the neighboring pavilion by a tunnel and nestled in a wooded site. A TOUR DE FORCE Simple and astute, the concept deftly blends the center's innovative and technological vision with the surrounding wooded environment, a true tour de force that comes to life within the building in multiple ways. Each component of the CNIMI has been carefully designed to showcase the building's environment and create an illuminating, inspiring atmosphere inside that fosters the development of new ideas. A FORCE OF NATURE A large transparent opening, stretching from one facade to the other of the building, allows natural light to penetrate the heart of the pavilion. Clad in polished mirror aluminum, the side facades reflect the trees, thereby visually reinforcing the density of the woodland. At both ends of the central space, expansive glass facades open up to the surrounding forest, making it an integral part of the interior decor. THE REIGN OF WOOD To bring the outdoors inside and add a warm touch, NFOE integrates wooden elements, such as the entrance vestibule arch and the floating volumes in the double-height space, housing technician areas and creative junctions. DONNING THE LAB COAT The centerpiece of CNIMI is a vast factory-laboratory that stands at the center of everything, equipped with metal machining machines, welders, and robots, where training, academic research, and technological demonstrations coexist. Every room in the building offers a view of this expansive, luminous space, located at the very heart of the structure, underscoring the initial purpose of the center.

The Toast of Broadway

Photo : Nikolas Koenig

ARTISTS & AUDIENCES This place also becomes an ideal spot for well-informed outsiders to mingle with those who inspire them and to immerse themselves in the heart of Broadway and all its microcosms.

Photo : Nikolas Koenig

In a city with overlapping creative communities, right at the heart of the Theatre District, the 27-storey CIVILIAN hotel in New York City serves as a new home and ad hoc clubhouse to cater to the needs of creative corps.

SPARKLE & GLAMOUR Evoking the appearance and ambiance of old theaters, it offers lighting inspired by illuminated signs, dramatic curtains, transformable decor and stage elements, rooms reminiscent of artist's dressing rooms, and the raw industrial materials of backstage life. Guests enter the hotel through what appears to be a discreet side door leading to the digital check-in station. A metal staircase leads to the second-floor bar/lounge and library.

PAST & PRESENT This serves as a natural tribute to the decades of work by David Rockwell, reflecting his style and achievements in designing sets for Broadway and various types of stages. Inspired by the gathering places of "theater folks" from both today and yesteryears, from the Edison Café on Broadway to the famous Stage Door Canteen, the Rockwell Group envisioned spaces where there is an unspoken invitation to come at any hour, to read a script, relax before an audition, or meet a friend.

Photo : Jason Varney

BOLD & LUSH Standing as a modern interpretation of a classic theater district gathering place, the restaurant features a curved, ribbed leather ceiling adorned with mirror panels, red leather banquettes, and accents of brass and glazed subway tiles. Additionally, the outdoor lounge serves as a seasonal extension of the restaurant, designed as a concealed urban garden with terracotta tiles and rattan furniture.

Giannone Petricone Associates

Prince-Edward-County Picture-Perfection

It took over a decade to transform a deteriorated property in Picton, Ontario, into the premier upscale hotel nestled in the idyllic setting of Prince Edward County, renowned as a burgeoning destination for food and wine enthusiasts. THE IMPRINTS OF TIME Giannone Petricone Associates Inc. Architects (GPA) chose to embrace the culture and history of the region by restoring and reinterpreting remnants of the past. One of the main challenges was to revive the faded luster of the 31,000 square foot hotel, while transforming it into a magnificent 21st century experience that sparks curiosity and establishes a strong connection to the vibrant rhythms of the tourist hotspot. MIX YOUR OWN MARTINI In a region marked by pronounced seasonal variations, adaptability is paramount for the hotel's success. The street-facing café and lounge effortlessly transition from bustling daytime moments to atmospheric evenings. Instead of a traditional grand welcome bar, a cleverly designed cabinet opens to reveal a "do-it-yourself" cocktail bar, perfectly capturing the laid-back spirit of the place. Additionally, a retractable roof on the terrace allows the gourmet restaurant to adapt to different seasons and events.

VICTORIAN TIMES MADE MODERN Inspired by its historical roots, iconic Victorian railway elements were abstracted and reintegrated into the hotel, creating a captivating blend of British tradition and rural Ontario's relaxed ambiance. In the dining room, the traditional Victorian ceiling rosette is playfully reimagined as a mushroom's underside, paying homage to time's passage and bridging the past to a lasting legacy at The Royal. A SYMBOL FOR THE FUTURE The renovated exterior, equipped with high-performance windows carefully designed to replicate the originals, has significantly improved the building's energy efficiency. The Royal now provides a model to consider for future heritage preservation efforts in the region.

Discover T.Dot’s Great Outdoors

1 Hotel Toronto celebrates the beauty of the megacity’s natural environment and offers an urban oasis in the heart of the city. The first of its kind in Canada, it introduces the city to a new standard for a sustainable luxury experience and is anchored by efforts to lessen environmental impact, promote wellness, and enhance resiliency. A PORTAL TO THE NATURAL A megalopolis of nearly 2 million residents, Toronto is also a naturally rich place, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario on a broad plateau interspersed with rivers, ravines, and an urban forest. And what if a luxury hotel was an inviting portal to the natural world, instead of a flight from it? URBAN FLORA & FAUNA The material palette is inspired by the soft colors of the lake and the contrasting hues of changing seasons, highlighting reclaimed wood, indigenous plants, boardformed concrete, and local marble. MOSS & ELM The lobby’s nest-like environment features a living green wall, found objects, local stones, and reclaimed furnishings made from materials such as elm wood and teak root. The lobby’s 15 foot high ceilings and reclaimed Elm wood flooring and shelving, sourced from a dismantled barn in Ontario, add traces of time and depth to the space. Step into the light and airy guest rooms to find sliding barn wood doors and Carrara marble bathrooms with hickory wood vanity surroundings that add warmth to the living quarters. CITY AND LAKE VIEWS At the 1 Toronto hotel, the view of the city and lake is the star of the rooftop bar, with sliding glass walls and a retractable roof. Here, a ceiling of woven rope is intertwined between the wooden beams, and reclaimed elm wood covers the floors. Leather and sheepskin accents evoke the wildlife of Toronto.

HOURS OF DELIGHT The aim was to transform what was once a vast cinematic complex into a series of distinct dining and entertainment spaces, offering a range of personalized experiences from happy hour to the early hours of the morning. Bright and airy, the iconic Mediterranean restaurant showcases minimalist influences and materials that harmonize with the imposing mountainous landscapes. Its centerpiece, a glass fireplace, stands on a floor accented with herringbone wood. WINE O’CLOCK Beyond the Library Gateway, through an immersive corridor of walnut millwork panels illuminated by halos of light, one discovers an eclectic, quirky lounge and a dining room. Here, an intimate seating space creates a tranquil nook for quiet conversations, situated near the wine room, just in time for wine o'clock. THE EAST AND THE WEST The East meets the West at the Speakeasy and the Clubhouse, which are accessed through a paneled secret door. The pathway is dotted with red marquee lighting on the ceiling and a carpet with a red bulb pattern, creating an optical illusion of reflection. The immersive room with rich textures is draped in velvet, with a screen made of handwoven rope by artist Chelsea Plumb. Chinese-inspired wall sconces extend above the tables. Three antique mirrored panels reflect the light behind the bar. BACK IN THE 80'S An infinity corridor initiates the journey to the Playhouse, a game lounge room, club, and screening room that transports guests back in time to an 80's arcade. As for the bar, it showcases a cinema-like marquee for interchangeable text and signage—a homage to the space's previous life as a movie theater and the Playhouse's capability to transform into a screening room.

The Solaris Group partnered with the Rockwell Group to transform a space at Solaris Plaza into "Chasing Rabbits": a communal clubhouse for a new generation of visitors to Vail, offering personalized experiences for skiers and locals alike.

Showcasing Poly City’s Vitality

This sales center, dedicated to showcasing the Changchun Chaoyang Economic Development Zone, features industrial elements and natural aesthetics as the main characteristics and focus of its design. It highlights the growth and vitality of Poly City, as well as its evolution over time. CHANGCHUN’S PAST & FUTURE In the early days of the New China Era, Changchun, situated in the heart of Northeast China, was an important industrial city. It was also China's "Detroit" and "Hollywood," serving both as a hotspot for the automobile and film industries. GROWTH OF LIFE Inspired by the universal theme of growth, the design team categorized the life cycle of vegetation into four stages: seed germination, seedling growth, flowering, and fruiting. The team meticulously planned the movement lines from the reception area, through the corridor, the sandbox display area, the meeting zone, and the second-floor space to follow the vegetation's growth cycle, highlighting the distinct characteristics of each stage. OBLIQUES & VERTICALS To break down the boundaries of conventional design techniques, angles of oblique and vertical facades were cut into a rectangular body, redefining the proportions of space and the paths of sight and light. BRIDGING SPACE & TIME To top it off, the stunning view positions Changchun's grand industrial history as a backdrop. At the end of the corridor, a digital wall documenting Changchun's development history symbolizes a link between space and time. Throughout the area, technical platforms intertwine with greenery, seamlessly blending industrial elements with natural aesthetics, thus representing the power of renewal that brings constant vitality to the region.

The Symphony of Matter

MELODY & HARMONY Breaking away from the restrictions and limitations of stereotyped architectural construction methodologies, the space design integrates philosophical wisdom into a composition resembling classical music, recreating a symphony of spatial melody and harmony. FROM A PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE The project incorporates the dialectics of Hegel's Philosophy of Absolute Spirit, a 19th-century German philosopher regarded as the founding father of speculative philosophy. This integration is expressed through a symphonic spatial experience and construction research, conducted within the context of an ever-evolving international commercial environment. PARALLELS & DUPLICATES The venue features a fully open setting, devoid of a main entrance and a primary circulation axis. Gray spaces are removed from the interior of the building, allowing for further division into doors and corridors, passages, and rooms. This parallel duplication enhances the sense of order and orientation. FROM A SYMBOLIC PERSPECTIVE A lengthy island table acts as a spatial symbol of centralized communication, operating as a central element signifying unity and distribution. The island table, capable of storing and showcasing over 100 product samples, offers substantial centralized storage capability with a sliding open display. By turning the handle, the table's surface can be separated and expanded, thus creating a multifunctional element for both display and meeting purposes.

Entrusted with designing the concept store for the stylish flooring brand LAK and showcasing the brand’s signature exploration of material nature and breakthroughs, PONE Architecture chose to sublimate the classical structure and opt for a symphonic and poetic approach to space and matter.

Deep-Blue Nostalgia

In the spatial landscape evoked by the Xuji Seafood Restaurant, the meeting between the ocean and the continent melds into a gentle harmony. BACKGROUND OF XI'AN Taking into account the regional characteristics of Xi'an, the IN•X design studio meticulously integrates diversity and locality into its design. A profound and adaptable backdrop has been conceptualized and incorporated into the space to resonate with the vastness of the coast, the deep currents of the blue oceans, and the imposing presence of the northern coastal city. ABOVE THE SEA Vertically divided into four layers, each one overlapping the other, the ceiling that runs above the entire space is embedded with light strips that outline the “rolling streams” which disappear at the end of sight. Setting the stage of both the coast and the city, the bold and resolute design approach blends into delicate undertones that see seawater fill the dining atmosphere. Pure blue fills the space with a sense of serene soul and mystical charm. UNDER THE SEA A red whale tail-shaped sculpture enlivens the scene with vibrant and colorful waves, infusing the space with rhythm and drama. A fiber art mural captures the essence of deep-sea ecology, distilling its fantastic richness and opulence into a realm of boundless imagination and romance. VOLUME & SURFACE Through volume and surface, the functional area design has found a suitable fusion point for fashionably contemporary design and deep-blue nostalgia.

Perched in the Birch Forest

Positioned near Xi'an's Jinghe Wetland Park in the south, this mixed multifunctional space boasts vistas of a vast birch forest, providing unique landscape resources. Divided into two levels, the first floor serves as a café, while the second floor houses a restaurant and art gallery. COPYING THE CANOPY The indoor ceiling's grid system draws inspiration from the intricate interplay of the forest canopy, translating its imagery into a striking tensile architectural structure, thus emerging as the defining highlight of Kris Lin International Design's project. A SUCCESSFUL ECOLOGICAL CHALLENGE The major hurdle of the project lay in crafting the curved ceiling grid. The designers opted for factory-cut aluminum plates, which were later assembled on-site. This approach minimized material wastage and enabled efficient resource utilization, particularly in terms of eco-responsibility. THE WISDOM OF ANCESTORS The indoor space is neatly arranged like an artificial forest in the middle of the birch trees. Mortise and tenon joint techniques, most common in Chinese traditional architecture, were used to connect everything together. THE ESSENCE OF LIFE Restaurants often aim to provide a relaxing, sensitive, immersive, and intimate environment, allowing people to momentarily escape from their daily routines. This aspect dictates that their spatial design should not solely focus on crafting unique experiential consumption scenes for brands but should also convey a positive aesthetic and humanism to the audience. This returns to the very essence of life, especially in the post-pandemic era.

Fishing Feast’s Design Feat

In the commercial building of the Lize financial district in Beijing, China, a seasoned Hunan cuisine chain, Xiaoxiang Wharf, has opened its sixth restaurant, Fishing Feast.

BACK IN TIME While designing the overall spatial construction, designer Wei Wu took a step back and sought a deeper connection between the restaurant's brand, nature, and culture. Dating back more than 7,000 years, the tradition of bamboo weaving came into play. For centuries, needs for clothing, food, and shelter were met using light and malleable bamboo strips, forming a "Hunan affection" in collective memory. THE BRAND DNA Drawing inspiration from bamboo weaving, the designer combines bamboo crafts within the modern dining space and creates two large white cavities in the main area through deconstruction and enlargement. These soft constructions within a harder space not only reinforce the contemporary feel but also encapsulate the genetic impression of the brand.

TURMOIL AND EXUBERANCE The turmoil and exuberance arise from the treatment of materials. The combination of shuishashi, widely used in the 1970s and 80s, with modern weishuini adds hierarchy to the space. The subtle shift in granularity causes an emotional transformation of being in this place. We see a modern softness blended with coarse particles, like sand running over the skin of our emotions. It provides a warm sense of time, where turmoil and exuberance come together. PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE In digging for the connection among the brand DNA, urban culture, and nature, the project anchors itself in the past and projects itself into the future, making the present a memorable culinary experience.

The Red Barn Sanctuary

All our admiration goes to this inspiring transformation by Cecconi Simone, who turned a dilapidated, abandoned, and ruined barn into a sophisticated, warm, and welcoming residence, located 120 km west of Toronto, Canada, on a 93-hectare property. ONCE UPON A TIME... The 93-hectare property once housed two barns adjacent to the farm. The Main Barn was built in the 1800s and was later expanded. The mandate was to restore the dilapidated property and convert it for residential use while preserving the barn's authenticity. RECLAIMING ITS HERITAGE Although the interiors are not considered heritage, every effort was made to keep, restore, and enhance existing elements; many of the exterior finishes were brought into the interiors for continuity. The fireplaces utilize the stone and mortar style found on the exterior, while millwork is clad with reclaimed barn board. Countertops are made of natural soapstone, while the existing floors and ceilings were whitewashed and preserved. HUMAN-SCALED INTERIORS The barn's vernacular nature is celebrated and elevated here by incorporating modern amenities into thoughtful and respectful interiors. The scale and proportion of the interiors are skillfully managed, characterized by expansive spaces and impressive ceiling heights. HOME SWEET HOME The connectedness with nature and the building’s past is inspiring and uplifting. The interiors honor the building’s history while creating a befitting residence. It is an oasis, a place of respite, a sanctuary... a true embodiment of 'home sweet home'.

Warmth & Philanthropy

BURDIFILEK beautifully crafted the interiors of a 25,000 square-foot home steeped in serenity and artistry. It is lived in by a family of philanthropists who regularly host events in support of various charities. The challenge: making it warm, both with and without guests hosted. FLUIDITY IN THE FINISHES From one room to the next, fluidity is unveiled through a harmonized palette of natural woods, quarry stones, and soft textures. The subdued tones blend with dramatic sightlines leading to particular artworks, and custom finishes give each room its own character and uniqueness. While the entrance is adorned with a minimalist fireplace clad in the same French limestone used for the corridor floors, the fourteen-foot double doors lead into the grand living room. CURATED ART & NATURE A secondary entrance leads to a solarium where potted trees visually connect with a vine-covered wall in the distance. Serving as a welcoming seating area for arriving guests, this room boasts a highly curated ambiance, featuring limited-edition furnishings coexisting with 20th-century works of art. CAPTIVATING CRAFTSMANSHIP In the adjacent dining room, instead of a chandelier serving as a focal point, the designer chose to draw attention to a set of custom cast glass doors that separate the dining room from the sunroom. When closed at night, the doors create a lantern effect and offer a theatrical moment. As for the stone staircase that spirals between three floors, its winding curves are highlighted by a 30-foot cut glass chandelier that hangs from the ceiling. COMPOSITION & BEAUTY In this exquisitely bold expression of contemporary design, each room exemplifies the designers’ dedication to detail, composition, and beauty. The outcome is a compelling visual statement that is equally practical.

The Riverside Mansion

A Modern Orientalist Riverside Mansion

Prioritizing the human relation to spatiality rather than space functionality, the Riverside Mansion exudes poetry, imagination, silence, and movement. THE IDEAL HOME The lingering impacts of the pandemic, along with the growing pace of globalization and urbanization, have urged us all to reassess the relationship people foster with cities, nature, and others. Aldo Rossi proposed that cities embody the collective memory of their people. With this in mind, a dialogue was instilled between history and the future, while redefining the lifestyle of contemporary urban elites and future spatial aesthetics. REDEFINED BORDER For the East Suite, a more modern geometric framework was adopted in order to reconstruct the spatial order and dissolve the boundary between the interior and nature. In the West Suite, a garden immerses our senses and exudes the joy of nature. The inner courtyard infuses an oriental interest into the space, while forming spatial coherence by adding a fireplace. AN UNCUT STONE The modernist spatial order was taken as the benchmark. The space was treated like an uncut stone. In the spirit of ancient gardening, features such as arcades, bridges, and steps were added, defining and reconstructing the space. The jade-like green marble pieces, along with the black metal frame, fuse the oriental and the modern, creating a sleek and exquisite look in the space. Beyond the orderly oval space, two indoor courtyards exuding dreamlike oriental beauty were constructed, as though in nature. ORIENTAL CHARM The pinnacle is reached with the classic white arch leading to a purer space, where a calm rhythm awakens inner strength. Throughout the space, materials such as terrazzo, jade, dark wood, and antique copper are showcased to beautifully merge oriental charm with modern aesthetics.

Echoing the Lake and Mountains

Built on the edge of Lake Echo in the Laurentides, the Y Residence opens a new chapter of life for an active couple, newly retired and lovers of the nature and landscapes of the region. AN ARCHITECTURAL SYMBIOSIS Here, the architectural concept arises from two forces which, at first glance, seem to oppose each other: the clients' desire to live in a house that is both welcoming and robust, and the imperatives of the site which invite one to project into the landscape while delicately weaving between the trees. The result is a volume segmented by a tripartite distribution of functions, following a logic that is both functional and landscape-oriented. INCITING MOVEMENT By opting for a “Y” layout, STGM has been able to celebrate the richness of the site into which it integrates, while respecting it and demonstrating humility. The house thus encourages those who inhabit it to move, influenced by the light, views of the landscape, and the comings and goings between the inside and outside. LIVING IN THE SPACE AND THE ENVIRONMENT Rather than offering a simple panoramic landscape to contemplate as a singular frame, the house frames both fauna and flora on various scales, allowing the residents to consciously inhabit the site that welcomes them. Inside, the volumetric segmentation creates vast and bright spaces while maintaining a friendly scale and warm atmospheres, to which the omnipresence of wood greatly contributes. AVOIDING CONVENTIONS Moving away from formal compromises and subjective choices, the house fully embraces its mission to provide its occupants with an inspiring, functional, healthy living environment that respects the nature surrounding it.

A Tale to Tell

Reigning above the magical city of Shenzhen, China, this residential environment, brimming with bliss, caters to active urban socialites and tells the city's tale from the owner's point of view. LIFE STORIES & SCENES When designing Shenzhen Bay SIC65 in China, Yu Zhao imagined life scenes and stories from the owner's point of view, rather than from his designer perspective. With breathtaking views of the seascape and urban infrastructure, this sky-high project reimagines the idea of a mansion and infuses inheritance, innovation, personality, flexibility, and freedom to propel the concept into the future. 3, 2, 1... ACTION! The designer sought to create a delicate living space operating at a slow pace and exuding calm and welcoming atmospheres. The design language was used as if actors were playing a scene. In doing so, the designer became somewhat of a director, using design elements to tell a story, one of hope and futurism. FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET The mood of the space changes as the day goes by, and as the sun rises and sets. In the face of the landscape, SIC65 embraces the magnificence of the bay and the ecology of the city. Only when the pace slows down can people truly embrace their own pace. Space can define the energy of hope and the flow of life in a more expansive way. FOR THE CHINESE ELITE The designer delved into the deeper connection between abstraction and concreteness, as well as between simplicity and complexity, in order to imbue people with endless emotions.

A Modern Manor

This Tudor-style mansion located in the center of Montreal is an intact example of a distinctive architectural style that contributes to Montreal's built heritage. THE TUDOR VALUE Clad entirely in stone and built in 1936 on the western slope of Mount Royal, its original layout, noble materials, and typical shape give it great historical and artistic value. UPDATING THE PAST Initially, the owners, a family with six children, only intended to carry out minor renovations to modernize the interiors. A thorough inspection of the building revealed the need to develop two parallel projects: the renovation of the house's envelope and the complete redesign of the interiors. The challenge for the designers, MXMA Architecture & Design + Chamberland Design, was to find a balance between the neo-Tudor style and the contemporary and open look the clients sought for the interior. PRESERVING HISTORY On the ground floor and garden level, the layouts required the transformation of several existing bays and the demolition of some exterior walls, while respecting the building's facade layout. The original leaded windows were replaced with new ones that meet updated performance standards but still follow the architectural features of the original windows. Notably, they replicate the composition of the stained glass, in line with preservation rules. THE STORY GOES ON An impressive feat of craftsmanship and material mastery, this comprehensive interior intervention served as a conservation lesson and posed a challenge for the talented team. The result is a strong link between the architecture of the past and the lifestyles of the present. A heritage house that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.

Tailor-made for a Family of Talents

Amidst the pandemic, the opportunity to renew the lease sparked a profound reflection on the essential role of an office in an evolving work environment, leading to significant transformations and subsequent relocation. RETHINKING THE TYPOLOGY Given the current hybrid work context and a comprehensive overhaul of team operations, Ædifica has opted to prioritize collaborative spaces, allocating 30% of the area to workstations and reserving 70% for meetings, socialization, and even the sharing of health-conscious meals prepared on-site by a dedicated chef. NORDIC WARMTH The space blurs the boundaries between a hotel lobby, a creative workshop, and a residential loft. The tone of the place, described as "Nordic warmth," draws from a palette of iconic materials: concrete, stone, wood, and metal. Raw and authentic, these materials are balanced by the abundant presence of vegetation. Acoustic felt slats float above table islands, meeting rooms, and private lounges, contributing to acoustic and visual comfort. FOR “FAMILY” REUNIONS An impressive 26-foot-long vertical garden gracefully divides the space and frames the bistro. This versatile area of 1,300 square feet, surrounded by the same concrete panels as the elevator lobby, serves as an art gallery, reception point, and café. Anchored by a substantial central island clad in charred wood planks, it's where the chef prepares a variety of meals daily for the Ædifica family. A THIRD PLACE At the end of the journey, one discovers an agora that can comfortably accommodate nearly a hundred guests. This space serves as a meeting point, a dining area, a cocktail bar, and a multifunctional loft. Thanks to the quality of natural light and the beauty of the views it offers, this space becomes an ideal choice for work, thus embodying the concept of the "third place".

The Sound of Silence

Designed by the architect duo yh2, the new Emerson-Verdant offices take advantage of the unusual size of an industrial building from the 1980s to create a unique workspace.

LIKE NESTING DOLLS The challenge was to design a workspace, a place for concentration but also for socialization, within a large open space where sound travels and the gaze wanders. Composed of buildings within the building, several spaces are defined here. Like nesting dolls, they take their place in this vast volume, each housing a function. RAISE THE VOLUME The first choice was to remove the existing suspended ceilings and update the double-height space, thereby directing the project towards spatial composition within this now-revealed vast volume. From the entrance, a visual axis creates an appeal to the main double-height space, entirely painted in white, bright and airy. TURNING DOWN THE VOLUME In such a unique and vast space, every architectural intervention must serve the acoustics of the place, such as these wooden and felt panels above the meeting rooms, which act as inverted resonators and absorb sound. Like clouds, acoustic compositions float above the open area; suspended felt assemblies limit sound propagation and inhabit the double-height volume. CONTRASTS IN RESONANCE Measured intervention respecting and enhancing its existing environment, this project plays with contrasts: compression/expansion, dark tones/light tones, mass/lightness, and materials to create a dynamic workplace where functionality and uniqueness resonate.

Wood Exhibition

The goal? To create an exhibition space that would showcase Stone Tile's worldclass products while drawing inspiration from the ambiance and aesthetics of an art gallery. WOOD IS KING The result? An exhibition space where wood reigns supreme, creating a serene and calm ambiance that encourages on-site viewing of the pieces and exploration of the finishes and patterns offered for wooden floors. PASSING THROUGH THE ARCH Acting as a focal point, the entrance arch is repeated within the space, inviting visitors to stroll easily. The walls and ceiling, in soft and neutral tones, concentrate attention on the elements that compose this area. DISPLAYING WOOD Large boards suspended from the ceiling, like artists' canvases, allow each customer to visualize their flooring on a large scale and get an idea of the wood patterns presented. Each floating board has been designed to facilitate the transition from one board to the next, enabling customers to make informed choices and compare the options they like. A CONCRETE SOLUTION A meeting area, intended for interaction with advisors on-site, unfolds in the same soft and neutral tones as the exhibition hall. Throughout the space, indirect lighting creates a cozy and warm atmosphere while producing interplays of shadows and light on the concrete floor, adding an artistic gallery touch.

A Home’s Old Soul

Built in 1910 and extended in 1920 by the Montréal architectural firm Ross & MacDonald, and resting on the slopes of Mount Royal, the semi-detached urban residence was in desperate need of renovation. MODERN LIFE IN A PERIOD HOUSE Falling under the spell of their recently purchased residence in Montréal, the new owners wanted the soul of the place to be preserved. Yet, the space needed to respond to current lifestyles, foster more light, and offer friendlier, less hierarchical living quarters that catered to entertaining guests and enjoying alone time as well. CLASSICAL ELEVATIONS A new family kitchen, now open to the living room, has replaced the old closed kitchen, which was reserved for outdated servant service. Noble materials such as mahogany cabinets, marble countertops, and white ceramic tiled floors bring a classic rhythm and softness. BEAUTIFYING THE PAST The atmosphere is treated as a valuable bequest, an element of heritage. The house's soul lives on through the use of elevated materials, maintaining the decorum so dear to its time of origin. MATTER COUNTS The concept of "Materia" (matter) in a broader sense as a statement of heritage inspired Alexandre Bernier Architect to undertake a sensitive research process. To preserve the soul of the Cedar project, several elements were conserved and repaired, keeping the traces of their wear. New materials and noble, natural, and traditional products follow the direction of the original construction. The new mahogany windows and the original stained glass complement each other with dignity, while the revelation of massive brick walls, steel columns, and cast iron radiators amplifies and affirms the passage of time.

Evoking the Past & Housing the Future

In the heart of Old Montreal's Old Port, the Brésoles project transforms a former commercial space into an exceptional residence, combining tradition and modernity with avant-garde and minimalist design. RICHNESS & REFINEMENT Here, the warmth of wood is preserved and enhanced by pairing it with new materials, both in terms of their color and geometry. The choice of Dekton, whether in the kitchen, bathrooms, or powder rooms, was a natural one, bringing richness, refinement, and modernity to the spaces. AND THERE WAS LIGHT Throughout the space, recessed fixtures, wall sconces, and pendant lights illuminate the common areas. The bedroom, located on the mezzanine level and requiring a specific degree of privacy, is equipped with electronically adjustable glazing that controls opacity. A WINDOW TO THE PAST Preserving the original windows that provide natural light to the front of the house, these windows have been retained and give the space an old-world charm. As for the pointed arch windows inserted into the kitchen backsplash, they echo the immense stained glass windows of Notre-Dame Basilica, a perfect choice considering the ceiling height of over ten feet. A second life is also given to a wrought-iron front door, which now integrates as an adjacent partition to the stair railing leading to the basement. This is a solution that maintains visual continuity and avoids shadowed areas. CROSSING THROUGH TIME A harmonious achievement that unveils itself in the subtlety of details and nods to remnants of the past, this creation by Groupe E5 is destined to elegantly traverse through time.

Like a Time Machine

70's Dream skillfully translates the elegance of design from another era into the everyday life of a modern family today. RENOVATING THE DREAM Acquired during the pandemic, the house needed to be quickly transformed to accommodate the new occupants. Here, the city required the preservation of the house's style: the existing openings as well as the spirit of the façade. The new design maximizes the use of space on each floor without altering the very classical ambiance of the interiors. THE CENTREPIECE The centerpiece is undoubtedly the redesign of the original stunning spiral staircase located in front of a two-story curtain wall that multiplies views under the adjacent canopy. Illuminated by an original Murano glass chandelier suspended in its center, it forms a pivot that serves the different rooms on the ground floor. A true masterpiece, it has regained its splendor with new solid wood steps and a redesigned railing that meets today's standards, while preserving the soul of the era. THE BACKBONE Its new handrail is made from recycled content aluminum, with ribs that are bent, welded, and anodized by an artisan from the Montreal area. This rounded design pays homage to its predecessor made of brass. Its bronze color matches that of the window frames, which naturally integrates it into the decor, while remaining the backbone of the house. CURVES AND ROUNDNESS Becoming a signature element of the project, this roundness is echoed throughout the property. L. McComber and Tania Dupont repeat this rounded form in the shape of the pool, the configuration of the wine cellar, the design of the island and kitchen counter backsplash, or even in the shape of the main bathroom's shower.

Knitted Comfort

Photo : Erich Laignel

NEEDLES MADE DIGITAL The increasing flexibility of work environments and the growing number of collaborative spaces require more lounge seating. Cardigan was designed to fit these spaces. This versatile digitally knit lounge chair is easy to place in the space, and the design of its back ribs provides the perception of additional support. MAKE ME MALLEABLE Its malleable backrest allows for various postures and provides enveloping comfort for relaxation and social interaction, as well as a more upright and supportive position for focused work, whether at home or in offices. THINKING OF YOU Designed with the user in mind, from the assembly line to delivery, it ships to consumers directly as a knock-down product, allowing for faster and lower-cost delivery. By exploring delivery-friendly alternatives to traditional bulky upholstered products, Haworth came up with a less-than-50lbs product and a metal frame and legs that can ship partially assembled, fitting into a shipping-friendly packaging. THE LIFE CYCLE This approach also allows for easy disassembly at the end of life, enabling parts to be reintroduced into a circular design system. Environmentally friendly, its knitted seat is made from 100% recycled PET plastics and avoids the use of glue. Designed to fit its components perfectly, surplus is minimized. A unique advantage for seating products that support zero-waste sustainability efforts.

Simple and efficient, the Cardigan Knit Lounge conveys lightness at first sight. Informed by the digital knitting process that Haworth continues to research and experiment with, Patricia Urquiola’s design concept sees striking aesthetics meet unparalleled comfort.

Majestic Magnolias

Inspired by white magnolias, which symbolize eternal bonds in Japanese culture, Mokuren was born from the creative collaboration between the Valencian manufacturer Lladró and the renowned Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, known for his signature blend of craftsmanship and design.

TRADITION & MODERNITY Tradition and modernity blend seamlessly in this new chandelier, where the purity of its aluminum lines harmoniously merges with the delicacy of its handcrafted porcelain flower tips. In contrast, the black lacquered aluminum structure, both complex and poetic, represents the magnolia tree itself, one of the Earth's oldest flowering plants, blossoming with strength for over a hundred million years. LIGHTING WITH SOUL Capturing the ephemeral phenomenon of the tree's flowering and its unique ability to surprise, the exquisite design accentuates its serene existence when lit. The warm glow of LED light filtered creates an enveloping intensity-dimmable light. A PORCELAIN HERITAGE Bearing witness to the brand's unparalleled porcelain heritage for over seventy years, this stunning creation fits within these functional designs with a contemporary style while highlighting the brand's mission to continue revolutionizing the world of artisanal porcelain. THE KOGEI SIDE OF THINGS Each and every Mokuren chandelier flower is crafted kogei-style (meaning by hand) by Lladró's expert artisans in Valencia. And as Fukasawa likes to remind us: Magnolia flowers inspire nobility, while their slender exotic forms are believed to be among the most beautiful in nature. A wonderfully inspiring and romanticized addition for any home!

Marquetry Illumination

This French-made buffet is born from impeccable technical mastery, from the wood cutting to the integration of LED lighting, and features bold 3D luminous effects in its design.

AN ARTWORK IN RELIEF Built on a standard cabinet base, CASAA's uniqueness lies in its front design. The apparent asymmetry of the doors creates this puzzle-like relief effect, while the illuminated strip accentuates the wood grain. The proportions of the doors blend into the trompe-l'oeil décor, transforming the piece from utility to sculpture. A RAY OF LIGHT Here, the promise of design, and incidentally, the technical expertise and signature of the XXL Maison brand, are reflected in this luminous LED ray that creates differentiation and uniqueness for the console.

A STUDIED PRICE The secret? XXL Maison has retained the classic proportions of the buffet and standardized its structure's production to secure costs, materials, and labor. Wood veneers are sourced from suppliers who ensure a sustainable approach to forests across a wide range of wood species. IMAGINATION RUNNING WILD A buffet must first serve as storage, offering deep and spacious drawers and shelves. Once this principle is established, the creative impulse is unleashed without prejudice. Tailored among a wide range of materials, colors of lacquers, and wood veneers, the designer's creative exercise willingly extends in harmony with the client's ideas.

Happy Hour with Orlando

This luxurious outdoor sofa concept stands out for its modularity and attention to detail and materials.

3X3X3 Comprising three seats, each Orlando base comes with three backrests, three back cushions, and three seat cushions. The backrests can be placed anywhere at the back, front, or on each side of the base, allowing for a multitude of configurations. The "armrest" accessory also complements the offering to maximize comfort positions. WITH COMBINATIONS A 3-seater sofa on its own, the system allows for a corner arrangement when combined with a second base. An ottoman can also be added to the arrangement and serve as a one-seater or a coffee table once the lovely teak tray is slid onto the surface.

TILTING MOVES And the comfort combination does not stop there! The base can also be tilted at both ends, reimagining the chaise longue as a lounge and adapting to any social occasion. THE APERITIF ALLY Face to face or side by side, alone or in a pair, this sofa is the aperitif ally. Its teak tray can also replace any cushion section, whether it's on the left, right, or center of the sofa, and elevate the outdoor aperitif into a friendly and organic experience, whether you're alone with Orlando or accompanied.

The Big Bang "Transit" Theory

Like a "theory" that connects rational and abstract realities, Theory transport furniture merges familiar and utilitarian elements with an open and artistic design.

INVOLVING USERS Comprising a shelter, two seating systems, and a cube-shaped support element, Theory uses modularity and adaptability to inspire unique interpretations by users. The result is a humanized transit experience that encourages play and discovery. SITE-SPECIFIC SPECS Theory’s scalable shelter brings a light and contemporary design language to public transit while remaining clear and intuitive in its purpose. Its thin bench seating system functions like a conventional bench, but opens the door to site-specific functionality in its configurable accessories of angled beams, panels, and integrated LED lighting. COEXISTENCE OF OPPOSITIONS Theory's thick-beamed seating system provides an intriguing contrast as it introduces elements of sculpture and public art into the conventional public transit user experience. The thick beams can intersect and stack in asymmetrical configurations, freely becoming a place to sit, stand, lean, recline, use a laptop, or even, dare we say, interact with others. STRONG SHAPES & MODULAR SCALES The cube’s blocky, iconic and colorful graphically striking shapes remain formally minimal and simplified to fit all architectural contexts and evolve over time. Embodying transit as a defining aspect of cities intricacies connected to its cultural fabric and visual identity rather than an isolated user experience, Theory beautifies the landscape in an artfully expressive and most inviting way.

A Measure of Water

Rubinetterie Treemme presents one of its most successful lines: the 5mm. This collection gets its name from the fact that each of its components - from the body, through the lever, to the spout - all measure five millimeters in thickness.

GUINNESS RECORD THINNESS The 5mm faucet is the thinnest in the world. Not only is it stunning by virtue of originality and design, but it also produces an efficient water flow. The fact that it can generate such an impressive flow from such a thin channel is an engineering applaudable feat in itself. SUPERIOR STEEL Combining avant-garde lines with high-quality stainless steel, this faucet offers an innovative aesthetic while showcasing the company's commitment to the environment. LIGHT & DELICATE By defining the thickness, or should we say “thinness,” of all elements to a mere 5mm measure, the line of bathroom faucets and shower accessories transcends lightness and delicateness. STUDIES & ACCOLADES These refined, simple yet sophisticated lines make 5mm an internationally acclaimed product, highly sought after by designers and end-users. Designed by Giampiero Castagnoli, Emanuel Gargano, and Marco Fagioli, this collection is the perfect result of a detailed study of faucet technology that has ensured superior standards in terms of aesthetics, eco-sustainability, and water conservation. Bravo!

Easy Riding into the Future

Photo : XP Zero / design Hugo Eccles / photo Ludovic Robert

From every angle and perspective, this award-winning new motorcycle looks nothing like a conventional motorcycle. The reason is quite simple—it is anything but conventional! REVOLUTIONIZING ROUTE 66 At the threshold of one of the most significant disruptions in transportation history, Hugo Eccles seized a unique opportunity to reinvent the motorcycle. From the outset, the ambition was to create a fully electric motorcycle.

REDUCED TO THE ESSENTIALS Early ergonomic experiments revealed that virtually no traditional motorcycle bodywork was necessary, aside from a seat and surfaces for the rider's knees to grip for control. This observation led to the overall concept of human control surfaces comprising the seat, footrests, and handlebars, while the machine's control surfaces encompassed aerodynamic panels, vents, etc. DECONSTRUCTED CONSTRUCTION The result is a motorcycle with two main visual elements: a machined aerospace aluminum core housing the electric powertrain and control systems, and a steel spaceframe with floating aerodynamic panels that support the rider and direct airflow over the motorcycle, making the XP a deconstructed motorcycle both literally and figuratively.

Photo : XP Zero / design Hugo Eccles / photo Aaron Brimhall

THE FUTUR IS NOW The aim was for this revolutionary two-wheeler to be unmistakably and unapologetically electric. Let it be said, electric power is the first new propulsion technology to hit the automotive industry in 130 years since the dawn of the combustion engine. Hugo Eccles embraced a completely new design language and rode with it – excuse our wordplay!

An Ally to a Nemesis

In designing the award-winning Nemesis Coffee shop in Gastown, Vancouver, Perkins & Will and ThinkL called upon Lumentruss’ LED lighting expertise to customize a neon skylight for the unique building known as the Flower Pavilion. RUBY RED RUBY RED Located beside Emily Carr University of Art and Design on Great Northern Way in Vancouver, Canada, the Nemesis Coffee shop was designed to become the centerpiece of a 20,000 sq. ft. plaza. It features a unique and eye-catching petal-shaped design. SPARKLING IN THE SUN On a sunny day on the west coast, the gleam of the red metal sparkles and catches the attention from miles away. A true spectacle that draws coffee enthusiasts to enjoy a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. BOLD & BEAUTIFUL While the exterior is a bold red, inside, one is greeted with light and custom-created panels made of laminated timber. Called Neon Sleeve 180 flex, the custom creation was designed by Lumentruss for the design agency's one-of-a-kind project, in collaboration with agent CDM2, in addition to custom creating all countertop lighting features too. Flexible, the LED-lit branches unify the space from floor to ceiling and diffuse a soft pixel-free 180-degree light

FUNCTIONAL PETALS Functionality and ingenuity in the concept strike us from the beginning. Here, flower petals appear to converge towards the top to create a central oculus. The circular skylight adds natural light to the LED installation, bringing an entirely new dimension to the coffee illuminating experience.

A Interconnecting Platform

Photo : Ludik Photographie

Flexible, adaptable, and designed for various purposes, the Plateforme collection aims to enhance people's well-being by creating welcoming spaces that incorporate playful and eco-responsible furniture.

RESOLUTELY USER-FRIENDLY Friendliness and experience modulation are at the very essence of the collection, aiming to redefine the user's experience. Each variation, assembled in a "LEGO-like" manner, has its uniqueness, usefulness, and experience. ONE FOR ALL Customizable by playing with dimensions and adding backrests, tables, benches, bleachers, or even a solar shelter, the system's design strategy is based on sharing this common platform, much like the automotive industry uses a platform to design multiple vehicle models, reducing costs, time, and carbon footprint.

JASON'S ENVIRONMENT Based on a concept of sustainable and environmentally friendly urban furniture, the structure of the furniture is made of aluminum, while the coating is made of recycled plastic boards from post-consumer sources. A SECOND LIFE Beyond materials, the collection is rooted in a thoughtful approach to offer durable transitory furniture, countering the issue of producing ephemeral furniture that is dismantled or discarded after an event or at the end of summer. Thus, Morelli has succeeded in designing furniture that can be installed on the street temporarily or permanently in a park. Well done!

Shou Sugi Ban - Composite recyclé

NewTechWood Canada

Quebec, Canada newtechwood.ca

Design & Circularity

Canadian company NewTechWood is once again innovating by introducing a highly realistic reproduction of an exterior cladding made from Japanese burnt cedar, commonly known as Shou Sugi Ban.

AN ANCIENT TRADITION This wood preservation method involves deliberately burning the wood to give it a textured relief and an anthracite hue that brings out the grain of the wood. Contrary to what might seem intuitive, burning the wood does not weaken it; in fact, it enhances its durability. A RAPID ASCENT Although this technique isn't recent, the use of Shou Sugi Ban as an exterior cladding has been rapidly growing in popularity in recent months, if not years. PROVEN EXPERTISE NewTechWood has been manufacturing wood and plastic composite cladding for two decades. The material used is composed of 95% recycled materials, including two-thirds recycled wood fibers and one-third recycled plastic. This means the factory recycles the equivalent of 12 million plastic bottles per month. Furthermore, the wood fiber used is 100% FSC certified. A SUSTAINABLE DESIGN This innovative reproduction of the famous Shou Sugi Ban is not only made from recycled materials but also requires no maintenance over the years and wear. Its distinctive color will remain intact and will not fade over time or from UV rays. The coating will withstand moisture and natural elements, providing an environmentally sustainable solution, EPD certified, with a timeless and quality design that will stand the test of time.

Votive Icons in Living Spaces

A heritage church is transformed into a community center with the addition of 51 affordable housing units. Welcome to Village Scalabrini, this social project with a human-centered approach designed by Humà Architecture + Design. PICTOGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION Here, the atmosphere created in the heart of public areas needed to be welcoming and warm while optimizing budget constraints. A tangible and strong connection is thus woven with the graphic vocabulary of the church, inviting dialogue and interactions among the various tenants. A RELIGIOUS LEXICON Thus, the design principles gradually turned towards signage, becoming the cornerstone of the project's identity. It aims to elevate and recall the church by incorporating architectural elements in its forms and the choice of noble materials - namely, white oak wood and plywood. NOBLE & MODERN Anchoring the project's identity, the signage becomes a bridge-link between the church and the new building, adorning the otherwise bare corridors due to budget constraints. Hung on the walls like votive icons, these wooden frames, playing with the stacking and superimposition of geometric elements, serenely symbolize the discovery of a path of enlightenment, reminiscent in style of the church's central stained glass window. SIMPLE & SOPHISTICATED It is used as apartment numbers and directional signage elements, cut using CNC in three levels. Additionally, a large logo, also engraved in white oak plywood, reproduces the complete shape of the church's main stained glass window, placed at the heart of the lobby.

Maple and the exclamation point

THE SWISS POUR This is what Julien Dupasquier initially names his company, in a nod to his father's origins. Within the AANAGRAM studio, tasked with repositioning the brand, it becomes evident that the true asset lies in its unique and original recipes, while the Swiss heritage does not resonate with the market, which maintains a strong cultural connection to leaves, trees, and maple sap. MODERNITY & TRADITIONS AANAGRAM thus develops an integrated brand platform that includes visual identity, product packaging, promotional material, as well as the boutique concept and counter space.

THE FLOWING ABUNDANCE Blending the nostalgia of traditional maple sugar shack codes with the contemporary culture of gourmet desserts, the new identity also showcases the high regard for maple. The bright orange-red, typographic variations, and exclamation point evoke a trendy and new-age maple grove. The brand positioning "The Wonderful World of Maple" suggests a philosophy based on discovery, abundance, and pleasure. MAPLE IN ITS ELEMENT Present in two boutiques and a counter, the concept primarily employs structures made of recycled cardboard cores, inspired by both the succession of maple tree trunks and the typology of traditional log cabins. On the floor, vibrant orange-red appliqués take the form of "syrup" puddles, creating a playful universe. "Maplely" Delicious!

Photo : AANAGRAM

Once upon a time, in the heart of the maple woods of Québec, a young maple farmer decided to adopt an alternative approach to the traditional recipes and processes of this national sugar. He offered a daring cuisine infused with off-season flows, allowing for the development of entirely unique flavors.

The Art of Transformation

Photo : Phil Bernard

L'Atelier Chardonnat symbolizes the perfect alliance between interior design and architecture, giving rise to excellent residential projects. This synergy between distinctive design choices and innovative architectural solutions impressed the jury of the GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN, who awarded L'Atelier Chardonnat the prestigious Emerging Talent Award this year.

AT HOME From "home hunting" to "home staging," the creative founders of L'Atelier, Aurélie and Jean-Paul Chauvet, provide their clients with a comprehensive service for high-end residential transformations. In partnership with experts in construction, architecture, and even real estate brokerage, they create customized projects where quality and craftsmanship take center stage. THE TONE OF FINISHES As for the Courcelette house, located in a very chic and historical neighborhood, the intent was to honor the home's 1940s origins while infusing it with contemporary elements. One notices the Scandinavian and minimalist inspiration that has permeated the interior finishes. The use of natural materials such as wood and stone, combined with a muted color palette and earthy tones, brings warmth and texture to the space.

Photo : Phil Bernard

POLISHING THE HIDDEN GEM The Roy House, a century-old residence featuring 10-foot ceilings and a 2,600-square-foot interior, is a true hidden gem in Montreal's Plateau Mont-Royal. Under the skilled hands of Atelier Chardonnat and its exclusive partners in complementary fields, original building details have been meticulously restored. These include classic window woodwork, exposed beams at the garden level, and ornate cornices on the building's facade. TURNING BACK TIME What a brilliant move by the creators to turn back time by meticulously crafting new traditional elements and integrating them into the space and ambiance. Think of the shaker cabinets and the reading nooks with bay windows. These classic elements, like the concrete floors on the ground level, blend seamlessly with modern touches such as the glass wine cellar. Everything here has been custom designed and crafted, from the cabinets to the library, from the wood slat staircase to the bathroom vanities.

Photo : 2020 Nicolas Shapiro

THE SOUND OF NATURE Here, the kitchen with its view of the garden creates an indoor-outdoor living space where the backyard has been completely transformed to take advantage of the beautiful vegetation and landscape. There is an enchanting California vibe with the sunken living room and the fireplace at the heart of the design.

Photo : 2020 Nicolas Shapiro

A SIGNATURE IS REVEALED It is apparent, a signature is revealed in the work of Atelier Chardonnat. We notice the concern to modernize the place while bringing out its soul and history. All this while surrounding yourself with collaborators talented speakers and highlighting quality craftsmanship. Bravo and good luck!

THE INTERIOR DESIGN PHILOSOPHER

RENÉ DESJARDINS ALONGSIDE HIS FATHER ON A CONSTRUCTION SITE, FULLY IMMERSED IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS DURING HIS SUMMER MONTHS.

In an often-formulaic ecosystem, some mavericks defy easy categorization. René Desjardins is one such rare individual. Having stumbled into the world of interior design, this self-taught visionary has become a self-made figure in the field. A sharp and daring mind, Desjardins successfully merges philosophy and construction to create interiors that are both aesthetically appealing and intellectually compelling.

© Photo : André Doyon

Tr i b u t e Aw a r d

//THE MARILYN PROJECT GARNERED A SPOTLIGHT FEATURE IN THE INAUGURAL 1983 ISSUE OF "LES IDÉES DE MA MAISON" MAGAZINE.

STRONG ROOTS Born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, René Desjardins grew up in a nurturing home where creativity and pragmatism intertwined. With a mother skilled in haute couture and fine arts, and a father who was a former military man and a specialized concrete entrepreneur, his family became the initial canvas for his design interests. From a young age, his penchant for drawing was clear. He filled entire notebooks with sketches and drawings, laying the groundwork for his keen eye for aesthetics and a fondness for symmetry. Childhood was not just a time of innocence but also a period of obsessive precision for him. He even went to the extent of measuring the sleeves of his shirts to ensure their equal length, revealing an unfailing instinct for proportion and coherence. During his teenage years, Desjardins immersed himself in the working world by joining his father's business during summer months. This experience not only instilled a strong work ethic but also taught him the dynamics of a construction site, harmoniously merging the concrete and the conceptual within his left and right brain hemispheres. THE ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL ODYSSEY Desjardins began his academic journey at Séminaire Saint-Joseph in Trois-Rivières, where he was captivated by the grand architecture of the place. He continued his education, earning a master's degree in philosophy with a thesis focused on aesthetics. Although he taught philosophy for a few years at cegep, he found this path unsatisfying.

TOP : RENÉ'S MOTHER BOTTOM : RENÉ ON HORSEBACK

True to his instincts—and his heart—he stunned his circle by abandoning job security. Passionate about horseback riding and dressage, he pivoted his career to manage an equestrian center for several years. Then, in another twist, he opened a jewelry store in Trois-Rivières, followed by a boutique in Montreal. It was in these boutiques that Desjardins was introduced to the world of interior design. Without formal training, he nonetheless took the reins of the décor, and his innate aesthetic sense quickly caught attention. His ascent peaked when a friend entrusted him with the transformation of her interior in Westmount, an upscale neighborhood in Montreal. WHEN STARS ALIGN This initial project, which he affectionately nicknamed "Marylin" due to a central triptych of Marilyn Monroe, garnered unexpected recognition. It was photographed, published, and even featured on the cover of the then-new interior design magazine, "Les idées de ma maison," catapulting him into design stardom. He had found his voice. Entering the design world without specialized academic training, Desjardins surprised his first clients with a plethora of ideas, despite self-admitting to being a novice. In his case, ignorance of the "established" proved to be a strength. Armed with rapid reasoning, sharp intuitions, and construction know-how inherited from his father, he dove in with unwavering determination.

130 | INTÉRIEURS 90

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION It's no wonder that SDEQ (Société des décorateurs-ensembliers du Québec), now APDIQ, quickly welcomed him into its ranks, validating the work of this rebel. His creations, always current yet timelessly relevant, have solidified his legitimacy in the field. THE ART OF SUBTLETY It would be a mistake to label Desjardins as a "minimalist." While his works may appear streamlined, they exude a palpable sensuality. He bets on the absence of the unnecessary to captivate, creating spaces that invite not only observation but also tactile and visceral experiences. For Desjardins, comfort and luxury are more than mere objects in a room; they are elements integrated into the very structure of his creations. THE DESJARDINS CASE He is neither a minimalist nor a maximalist; Desjardins is a design opportunist, exploiting every nook and cranny of the space and every fiber of his imagination to create something unique. By avoiding stereotypes and focusing on the essence of things, he embodies what Spinoza might have termed "perseverance in his being." BRAVO, RENÉ DESJARDINS, FOR CONTINUING TO FASCINATE US.
