Renaissance à soi-même On her journey, literally and figuratively, Monica Bassett creates paintings in motion, as if engraving them with a mark of her intimate, expatriate experience. Fragments of a motionless journey, to paraphrase Fernando Pessoa, offers the viewer’s eyes vivid impressions which pass through the work of an American artist who arrived in Paris in 1990 and who threw herself headlong into painting. At thirty, Monica Bassett left behind her native Chicago and a career with a California company to become an artist in a new city where the blank page waited to be written. Self-taught, for her, the act of painting became a tool for self-discovery, an authentic and fruitful heuristic approach that draws its strength from the process and practice rather than the knowledge. So, her pictorial vocabulary is one of an intuitive art that follows the rhythm of her respiration and exudes a breath of life. The tree was a natural choice as a recurring theme in her early work. De son voyage, au propre comme au f iguré, Monica Bassett livre des toiles en mouvement, comme pour imprimer sur le tableau un résidu, une trace de son expérience intime d’expatriée. Fragments d’un voyage immobile, s’il fallait paraphraser Fernando Pessoa, ainsi se donnent au regard les forces vives qui traversent l’œuvre de l’artiste. À trente ans, Monica Bassett laisse derrière elle son Chicago natal ainsi qu’une carrière dans une société californienne pour se faire peintre dans une ville nouvelle où la partition vierge et inconnue restait tout entière à composer. Autodidacte, l’acte de peindre répond alors à ses yeux à un principe de connaissance de soi, à une démarche heuristique féconde et sincère qui puise sa sève dans le processus et la pratique plutôt que dans le savoir. Aussi, son vocabulaire pictural est-il celui d’un art intuitif qui épouse le rythme de sa respiration et exsude un souff le de vie. L’arbre s’est tout naturellement imposé à ses débuts comme motif récurrent de son œuvre. Ses acryliques, nimbées d’or et d’argent, draguent leur énergie depuis les racines d’une terre universelle rappelant le thème biblique de l’Arbre de vie, triomphe absolu de l’immortalité. Monica Bassett a en effet choisi son camp et c’est résolument du côté de la vie qu’elle verse.
