Editorial Our readers are a mixture of gallerists, art professionals, collectors, art dealers, regular exhibition visitors and tourists.

With the special edition of ART GUIDE EAST on Photography and Video Art we intended to showcase all the galleries and institutions, events like biennals, festivals and art fairs that focus on these emerging genres of art.

Central and Eastern Europe are traditional fortresses of photography, and video art is also gaining more and more impetus.

Our aim was to gather all the relevant places in one volume and spread the word at an international level.

We would like to thank all the contributing partners who realised the importance of this joint work and we do look forward to cooperating in the future.

Art Guide East, the most comprehensive guide of the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region, made its first appearance in May 2011. Its primary goal is the advancement of contemporary art and cultural tourism in the CEE region. The main focus of this free, bi-monthly guide is the introduction of contemporary art galleries, museums, auction houses, art schools, magazines of the CEE region in order to generate greater public interest worldwide

the CEE region’s Photo and Video Art 2013 volume we spread this attitude by creating new possibilities for the region’s photography, contemporary artists and for the whole scene.

This volume is the story itself. It is about us, the CEE region. The global art market and the theory that follows it is still in a phase of reevaluation in the era of discoveries and rediscoveries regarding modern and contemporary art.

RadaR -Benefit Association, that has been involved in the artistic monitoring of the region since 1996, aims to create a new milestone in this process. Apart from publishing ArtGuideEast magazine regularly we now focus our attention on a narrower spectrum on photography and video art.

When editing this volume we decided to discard the emerging trade unionist attitude, this is not what we are about. Instead we aim to direct international attention to the photography of the region with the intention of helping it gain its rightful status in the global scene. We are independent, so only the highest professional standards matter to us. We firmly believe that by publishing

In order to facilitate the global activity and the expansion of ArtGuideEast magazine, we founded the new Institute of Contemporary Art in Budapest this spring – it is going to begin its operation as soon as everything is in place. The need for this Institution is based on the knowledge and experience we gained since 1996 and the necessity to concentrate all our various activities and tasks in the scene in one space, under adequate organizational management.

In my view both Hungarian and CEE contemporary art deserve a wider institutional framework with higher potential.

Bearing in mind all the works and activities as well as the accumulated intellectual and material properties the Institute can only fulfill its mission if it relies on the best practices of the CEE region and will work exclusively by professional standards.

The establishment of ICA-Budapest is a significant step considering our possibilities.

It means more work, more responsibilities.

However I firmly believe that it is in the CEE region’s long term, strategic interest. I am confident that we will harvest the fruit of this shared effort together.
