What began as a simple project turned into an unexpected journey into biomaterials. Each experiment deepened my passion for algaebased innovations, ultimately shaping my decision to continue this research in my final year of university. Now, I’m eager to explore how these technologies can transform the built environment, pushing the boundaries of sustainable design.

In an effort to eliminate the shading lamellas from the construction of my algae roof, I sought an alternative solution due to their aesthetically displeasing appearance. To replace them, I embarked on a series of experiments aimed at creating a tinted bioplastic ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) cover capable of providing shade while maintaining visual appeal. Among the tests conducted, I experimented with various algae mixtures and proportions to gauge their effectiveness in achieving the desired shading effect. From evaluating different percentages of algae content to exploring combinations of wet and dry algae mixtures, each experiment aimed to strike a balance between shade provision and aesthetic harmony with the surrounding environment. Through these trials, I aimed to discover a viable alternative to the shading lamellas, one that not only addresses functional requirements but also enhances the overall visual coherence of the algae roof structure.

I became fascinated by algae’s potential beyond air purification and started experimenting with algae-based bioplastics. I explored different levels of opacity, transparency, colors, textures, and durability to create a material that was both biodegradable and versatile. From there, I delved into self-healing limestone, where algae play a role in repairing cracks— another breakthrough in sustainable construction.

It all started when I was helping my younger brother with his science project. He wanted to create something “cool” and unique, so we brainstormed ideas until I came across algae’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide and purify air. It seemed like the perfect concept—simple, quick to make, yet effective. Using just water, algae, and an air pump, we built a small aeration system and tested it in a small enclosed room with an oxygen detector. The results were promising, and what started as a fun experiment quickly sparked my curiosity.

As part of this project, I was tasked with developing an exterior design that would complement the existing building while introducing a modern aesthetic. After exploring multiple design iterations, I refined the concept to feature recessed brick detailing above and below the windows, complemented by cream-colored window sills, and a red brick base that mirrors the existing window treatments. I was also SCALE FOR THE PURPOSES OF PLANNING APPLICATION ONLY responsible for the interior design of the extension, ensuring the layout accommodated two classrooms and a toilet facility. My role extended to producing technical drawings, 3D renders, and collaborating throughout the project from RIBA Stage 0 to Stage 3.

As part of the feasibility study, various design concepts were explored to better understand the client’s needs and preferences. Each design iteration presented different room configurations and spatial relationships that could appeal to the client’s vision. For example, we explored the potential of situating a children’s library next to a café, enabling parents to relax while maintaining a clear view of their children.

These designs were subsequently presented to the client, who narrowed the options down to two final designs. The project is currently in the process of further development.

Dublin Airport Baggage reclaim re-design AtkinsRéalis practice

This design brief focuses on upgrading the carousel equipment in the baggage reclaim hall to enhance operational efficiency and ensure the facility can accommodate 40 million passengers per annum (40mppa) by 2030. The objective is to improve the overall baggage reclaim process, reduce wait times, and provide passengers with a smoother transition from immigration to luggage collection.

The proposed designs prioritise creating ample space for both passengers and staff while minimising congestion around critical areas such as the carousels. Furthermore, the designs emphasise the importance of visual appeal, ensuring that the space is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, aligning with the airport’s overarching design philosophy.

The intent is to improve the passenger experience by creating a more seamless and enjoyable environment, meeting both current and future operational demands. The enhanced baggage reclaim area should foster a positive atmosphere, reflective of the high standards expected at a major international airport.

For this project, three design options were developed—Low, Medium, and High cost solutions—demonstrating different approaches to modernizing and optimising the space for better passenger flow. The design process involved identifying key issues impeding the effective use of the baggage reclaim area and proposing solutions to address these challenges.

The first, low-cost option focused on reconfiguring the carousel layout while also improving the spatial flow. While functional to some extent, this solution did not fully optimise the use of the space. Ultimately, the client has approved the high-cost solution, which includes demolishing existing structures to enlarge the space, making it more navigable. This option not only offers greater operational efficiency but also creates a modern, welcoming environment that is easier to understand and less intimidating for passengers.
