ANOMALIES

URBAN EXCAVATIONS OF THESSALONIKI

Master Thesis

2021 - 2022

Thessaloniki, Greece

Individual project

‘ Exceptional normal ’ / ‘ normal exceptions ’ – the most interesting points of study are those which violate the norms of their realities, unveiling the obstructed truths. The ‘ normality ’ can be reached through a departure from an anomaly – the occurrence within a system which is possible, yet very improbable and unexpected.

In Vasilissis Olgas street in a Greek city of Thessaloniki the anomalies manifest themselves in the genius loci buried in the overlapping layers of history, social tensions and the appropriation of space. Following the 3 strategies of the urban regeneration deriving from the analysis of the host environment: the border, the threshold and the void, the spatial anomalies become the instant irregularities with the meaningmaking ability and re-establishing the memory. Six resultant interventions collectively form a

stitching acupunctural system – a network of anomalies.

One of the interventions, the Lunette is a time machine for observing, the auditorium of the urban spectacle where the presence and the past are intertwined together. The structure rotates, framing the eclectic villas in the cityscape and the exposing the void, left behind by the demolished mansions replaced by the polykatoikias, multifamily residential buildings.

The other intervention, the Partisan Bridge, is a link between two realities: a multifamily building sprawling with life and the other, an abandoned villa overgrown with wild nature, legally too complex to be changed. The structure is a manifestation of this issue which attempts to urge the inhabitants to construct a common dialogue.

CIRCULAR PAVILION

The pavilion aims to intertwine the multifaceted and contradictory forces present on two sites that it is placed upon – initially the horticultural Floriade exposition and later the grounds of the historical architectural symbol of the Dutch monarchy, the Soestdijk Palace.

This narrativity of contrast aims to reforge this collision into a balance overlapping the differences, the threshold of tradition and innovation, humanity and nature. The artisanal Dutch practice of willow-weaving performed with local communities on the site reintegrates the craftmanship embedded in a contemporary form, protecting from the wind and diffusing the sunlight. Later its external willow shell can be left behind and become an afterimage reminiscence of the exposition and a potential shelter for the wild animals in the park. The

main structure of paper tubes uses an innovative technology which establishes the traditional material as a modern construction solution. The in-between layer of cotton fabric renders the pavilion windand rainproof, an active indoor climate provided by a curtain which opens and closes the space and serves as a projection surface.

The pavilion evokes a sense of belonging by becoming a tangible symbol with which both the young and the old generation can identify themselves as a state-of-the-art sculpture raised with a vernacular technique. The structure is resilient in its temporal character, an easily dismantlable and versatile provision of space. Following the concept of neonomadism it elicits the translocal intertwinements and the adaptability to the turbulent circumstances. It places migratory lifestyle over a sedentary one –routes over roots.

The bigger entrance space, the representative main room holds a model of the Soestdijk palace in the center. The passages to the next spaces are located where the circles intertwine. The narrower leads to the cinema, darker and more enclosed than the rest of the pavilion. The other way is through the storage, constituting a curved passage to the last dome, the exit or, alternatively, the entrance which serves as an exposition for an education room or an art gallery.

SEED BANK

BUILDING CITIES AS SEED ECONOMIES

Competition / Bachelor Thesis

2019 - 2020 Hong Kong, China

Individual project

The seed bank, a function commonly reserved for the remote areas, this time is located in the vibrant historical, economic and political heart of Hong Kong which serves as a vital communication node as a part of pedestrian path network that connects the harbour with the hinterland. Extended into a multifunctional public facility which is crossed by thousands of people every day it can draw attention to the climate change and highlight the consequences of the individual choices, providing activities such as plant cultivation or purchasing fresh local products on the market.

Defined by its context the building takes form of a passageway contrasting with the external envelope of an openwork wooden structure. An open public space is centrally accessed by the user who is placed in the very heart of the designed space with an insight

into the literal functional section of the building. The linear void is enfolded with an irregular grid permeated by vegetation, taking the form of a permacultural forest and urban gardens, vertical and aquaponic farms and vines. Just like an organic matter the structure literally grows into the urban tissue through the existing footbridges and the world’s longest system of escalators.

The modular form ensures resilience in adaptability and flexibility, being easily transformed and its functions modified when necessary. Low height of the seed bank compared to its surrounding improves air quality and circulation, viewing corridors and pedestrian communication. It becomes a kind of oasis in the concrete forest that revitalized and refreshes its environment, provides the sustenance and integrates local communities.

The building incorporates multiple functions: open food market on the ground floor, centrally based exhibitions, gastronomy, coworking spaces, rest zones and partially glazed laboratories associated with the bank activity. Last floors embody the educational and research spaces, topped with gardens, farms and greenhouses.

PROFESSIONAL WORK BALZAR

ARQUITECTOS

Internship

XI 2018 - XI 2019 (12 months) Valencia, Spain

https://balzararquitectos.com/

During my undergraduate degree I have taken a gap year which I spent working for an architectural practice in Balzar Arquitectos located in Valencia, Spain. Throughout the year I have contributed to multiple projects, both private commissions and competitions, varied in scale from residential dwellings to the large public development. Apart from working on various stages of the design starting from the draft to the executive project, I have had the chance to participate in the construction site visits and the meeting with the clients and manufacturers’ representatives (Andreu World among others), organize the photo sessions off the finalized projects, manage the marketing (social media and the online publications) construct and photograph the models and develop the final graphics, including the renderings.

Reference: Txema García Ballester, architect and the founder of Balzar Arquitectos

txema@balzararquitectos.com

The workflow in the office was mostly conducted in Revit, up to the executive plans including functions such as parametric schedules and components, phasing and the collaboration workflow. The graphic representation was performed in Illustrator while the renderings were made in 3ds Max with the Corona renderer, along with the postproduction in Photoshop.

Balzar Arquitectos was founded as a small architectural office in 2018 but due to its disciplined and dynamic practice they have developed rapidly, being increasingly acclaimed in the architectural scene. They describe their philosophy as time-less, precise, natural, functional, sincere and in the constant search of beauty. ‘ A work that is supported by the past, by tradition, to reinvent its principles and look towards the future .’
