Coffee: from the field to the cup
Coffee Germplasm and Climate Change Resilience
T his volume explores the challenges and opportunities faced by coffee cultivation in the face of climate change. It highlights the impact of atmospheric elevated CO2 concentrations and drought on coffee-plant physiology and metabolism. Young coffee plants were grown under different CO2 concentrations and water deficits, showing improved photosynthesis and water use efficiency even under drought. However, there were changes in leaf biochemical composition, with a decrease in phenolic compounds under elevated CO2 and an increase in chlorogenic acid and caffeine under the combination of water deficit and elevated CO2. The study also explores nitrogen uptake during four stages of coffee fruit development, revealing that rapid fruit expansion was the developmental period with a positive relationship with bean production. Additionally, fine roots became more abundant at maturity due to decreased carbohydrate demand, which could compromise nitrogen uptake due to root mortality.

Coffee germplasm is crucial for breeding plants adapted to global warming. Studies have shown that Arabica coffee populations in South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Ethiopia are genetically distinct from Ethiopian Arabica. Dullo et al. evaluated genetic accessions in the CATIE International Coffee Collection in Costa Rica. Davis et al. suggested relocation of coffee plantations and replacing available cultivars with new hybrids or species to ensure climate change resilience. They also studied the phylogenetic and spatio-phylogenetic relationship of two coffee species, C. racemosa and C. zanguebariae, and concluded that both species have traits that could be explored in breeding programs. Bohórquez et al. studied nitrogen uptake variations during four coffee fruit developmental stages. Medeiros et al. used molecular characterization, genetic diversity analyses, and circulating diallel studies to select new cultivars for C. arabica due to its narrow genetic basis and low diversity. They assessed 76 candidate parents and verified F1 hybrid crossings. Malta et al. studied the importance of genetic background in beverage quality of 31 elite C. arabica cultivars, selecting three with scores above 90 points.

Washington needs to wake up and smell the coffee: China Daily editorial
US Lawmakers Introduce “Hong Kong Sanctions Act”
A group of US lawmakers has introduced a bill requiring the US president to decide within 180 days whether to sanction 49 Hong Kong officials, judges, and prosecutors under US laws. The bill, known as the “Hong Kong Sanctions Act,” aims to further tarnish the image of Hong Kong, but will not deter Hong Kong SAR authorities from implementing the National Security Law for Hong Kong. The law aims to prevent foreign interference in China’s internal affairs and is intended to protect the country’s sovereignty. The bill is part of the US’s long-arm jurisdiction, and the bill is intended to further tarnish Hong Kong’s image. Washington has previously used its geopolitical influence to interfere in China’s internal affairs, as seen in a May report by the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China. The report aimed to prevent the Special Administrative Region (SAR) from using Hong Kong’s National Security Law against pro-democracy activists. Beijing has consistently opposed such practices. Hong Kong officials have
already condemned the US’s “bullying” and’sanctions’, stating that they reflect the hypocrisy and barbarity of politicians with sinister intentions. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Kachiu condemned these actions, stating that the US must recognize that Hong Kong, despite being an autonomous region, is an integral part of China, and the National Security Law is necessary for the region’s administration without foreign interference.
“ Global Shifts Erode US LongArm Jurisdiction’s Power ”
The US’s long-arm jurisdiction, which included suppressing foreign competitors, interfering in nations’ affairs, and subverting governments, was no longer effective due to global dynamics change.
Turkish man turns bicycle into mobile coffee shop in Bursa
27-year-old Enes Sefa Ünlü, a former aircraft maintenance technician and tour cyclist, discovered his passion for coffee in 2021. After a career in various fields, he returned to Bursa in 2020 after announcing his retirement from aviation.
Ünlü, a coffee enthusiast, combined his love for cycling with his love for coffee. After receiving brewing and presentation training, he turned his 1980 racing bike into a coffee shop. He now serves customers in other cities, including the Görükle district of Nilüfer, Bursa, using his bicycle with baskets filled with coffee ingredients and a bench.
Ünlü, a coffee lover who prefers metal or reusable cotton cloth over paper filters and avoids plastic bottles, supports the Zero Waste Project by recycling coffee pulp into compost. Ünlü, in addition to Görükle, visited other Turkish cities individually or with bicycle club members, attending coffee
festivals and organizations he was invited to.

Ünlü, a Turkish coffee brewer, combines his passions for sustainable and environmentally friendly methods to bring the culture of countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, where bicycles are common, to Türkiye. After recovering from a serious illness, he decided to travel by bicycle to introduce his coffee to the world and carry out sustainable and environmentally friendly events. His bicycle has become his traveling companion, and they have formed a bond of love through their travels, showcasing the potential of sustainable coffee production in these countries. Ünlü promotes eco-friendly production on bicycles, focusing on composting and recycling coffee pulp, inspired by social media, promoting environmental responsibility among young entrepreneurs.
Is Coffee Good For You?
Yes! But it depends on the kind of coffee and the quantity.
We’ve come a long way from the cans of Folgers that filled our grandparents’ cupboards, with our oat milk lattes, cold brews and Frappuccinos. Some of us are still very utilitarian about the drink while others perform elaborate rituals. The fourth most popular beverage in the country, coffee is steeped into our culture. Just the right amount can improve our mood; too much may make us feel anxious and jittery. of mortality,” said Erikka Loftfield, a research fellow at the National Cancer Institute who has studied the beverage. For years, coffee was believed to be a possible carcinogen, but the 2015 Dietary Guidelines helped to change perception. For the first time, moderate coffee drinking was included as part of a healthy diet.

festyle factors, like how many heavy coffee drinkers also smoked, the data tipped in coffee’s favor.
In moderation, coffee seems to be good for most people — that’s 3 to 5 cups daily, or up to 400 milligrams of caffeine.
“The evidence is pretty consistent that coffee is associated with a lower risk
A large 2017 review on coffee consumption and human health in the British Medical Journal also found that most of the time, co- ffee was associated with a benefit, rather than a harm. In examining more than 200 reviews of previous studies, the authors observed that moderate coffee drinkers had less cardiovascular disease, and premature death from all causes, including heart attacks and stroke, than those skipping the beverage. In addition, experts say some of the strongest protective effects may be with Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and liver conditions such as cirrhosis, liver cancer and chronic liver disease. For example, having about five cups of coffee a day, instead of none, is
correlated with a 30 percent decreased risk of Type 2 diabetes, according to a meta-analysis of 30 studies.
The potential benefit from coffee might be from the polyphenols, which are plant compounds that have antioxidant properties, according to Dr. Giuseppe Grosso, an assistant professor in human nutrition at University of Catania in Italy and the lead author of an umbrella review in the Annual Review of Nutrition.
However, coffee isn’t for everyone. There are concerns about overconsumption. This is especially true for expecting mothers because the safety of caffeine during pregnancy is unclear. While the research into coffee’s impact on health is ongoing, most of the work in this field is observational.
Does the way coffee is prepared matter?
Yes. Do you prefer a dark or light roast?
Coarse grinding or fine? Arabica or robusta?
“All of these different aspects affect the taste, but also affect the compounds within the coffees,” said Neal Freedman, a senior investigator with the National Cancer Institute. “But it’s not clear at all how these different levels of compounds may be related to health.” Roasting, for example, reduces the amount of chlorogenic acids, but other antioxidant compounds are formed. Espresso has the highest concentration of many compounds because it has less water than drip coffee.
“ We
don’t know for sure if coffee is the cause of the health benefits,” said Jonathan Fallowfield, a professor at the University of Edinburgh, and co-author of the British Medical Journal review. “These findings could be due to other factors or behaviors present in coffee drinkers. ”
A study in JAMA Internal Medicine examined the coffee habits of nearly 500,000 people in the U.K. and found that it didn’t matter if they drank one cup or chain-drank eight — regular or decaf — or whether they were fast metabolizers of coffee or slow. They were linked to a lower risk of death from all causes, except with instant coffee, the evidence was weaker.
The way you prepare your cup of joe may influence your cholesterol levels, too. “The one coffee we know not suitable to be drinking is the boiled coffee,” said Marilyn C. Cornelis, an assistant professor in preventive medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and co-author of the JAMA Internal Medicine study.
