Preamble. . .
Alicia Torres’ work instantly intrigues us through her use of so much gold and complementary turquoise tones. These works explore the beauty of the oxidisation process, and play on the idea of the artist handing over control to her materials. The letting go of control creates interesting and strange textures and patterns, which Torres manipulates in the way she encourages the oxidation process with the use of resin.
Torres used her time with us not only to look back on her practice, but also to introduce us to her unique way of working, giving us a behind-the-scenes look into her practice!

‘The work I am working on is based on a pictorial base in which questions of a spatial and installation nature are resolved. The work investigates the chemical reaction produced by the mixture of gold leaf and acrylic resin, resulting in works that are characterized by their transparency, malleability, blue and green tones, ... And therefore it allows us to vary their shape to adapt to the space or environment where they are, be it the exhibition hall, the studio or the natural environment. I work from the painting of the "unpainting", the rupture of the frame / frame, the expanded field, the spatial painting, the dialogue generated between the work, the space and the viewer, ... Installation painting.’

After Illusion is an online residency opportunity for artists, writers, and creatives at any stage of their career. Residencies take place twice per month and are two weeks in length. At the end of each residency, a zine is put together about the resident’s work, and published online.
This residency is all about creatives supporting creatives, and is run by an artist. Freedom of expression is the residency’s main focus, with no themes or emphases put in place. Creatives are allowed to take their residency in any direction they so wish.
