Hello everyone! I was hosted in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, by a warm family who helped me learn Marathi and embrace Indian culture. Studying at Sanjay Ghodawat International School, I overcame language barriers, formed friendships, and enjoyed a rich school life A memorable trip to Mysuru and participating in volunteer work were among the highlights This journey taught me to face challenges with courage and appreciate different cultures, while the warmth and kindness of the Indian people deeply moved me. As I return home, I plan to apply these lessons and maintain the connections I made, contributing to Japan-India exchanges I am grateful for the support that made this experience so fulfilling.
When I first arrived in July, I was quite an introvert, unsure of how to connect with the new people and culture I decided to perform a song but struggled with whether to sing in Hindi, English, or Japanese. Despite the challenge of learning Hindi, I stepped out of my comfort zone and practiced When I finally took the stage, the audience was captivated, and by the end, they gave me a standing ovation. It wasn’t just my performance that impressed them, but my courage to face the fears This experience marked a significant milestone in my personal growth
My study abroad journey in India transformed me. With the support of my host family, friends, and the AFS program, I grew beyond my expectations Initially suggested by a teacher, this experience became a lifechanging adventure. From connecting with others through a sketchbook to leading a spontaneous yoga session at the ASN Young Leaders G20 International Summit, I discovered how friendship and courage can overcome cultural differences Indian music, dance, and yoga helped me form deep bonds. Over 10 months, I learned the true value of friendship and developed a passion for building global connections Now back in Japan, I’m working to improve the experience for international students at my school
When I first arrived in India, the intense heat and crowded environment were overwhelming, but that quickly faded as the program began. In August, I participated in the G20 Young Summit in Delhi, delivering a speech on the UN’s SDGs and receiving an award an unforgettable experience The language barrier, with classes in Hindi, was challenging, but my host family and roommate helped me understand lessons and improve my language skills. We built strong bonds, playing soccer, cricket, and discussing anime and manga Celebrating Diwali and Holi added depth to my stay. My 10-month journey, supported by AFS India, my host family, and friends, has been transformative, expanding my perspectives and personal growth
One of my best experiences in India was meeting my host family. Living away from my parents for the first time was challenging, but my host family was patient, supportive, and never gave up on me. I feel fortunate to have been with such a caring family, and I hope to embody their warmth and responsibility Indian culture, particularly its festivals like Ganpati, Diwali, Navratri, and Holi, deeply impressed me. I loved participating in Navratri, where I embraced dancing, and Holi, where we played with colors. My time in India taught me the importance of communication, as misunderstandings often arise from poor expression Despite the challenges, I am grateful for the support of my host family, AFS India, and friends
During my stay in India, I experienced a mix of emotions. My initial fascination with the culture was overwhelming as I eagerly explored its traditions, history, and cuisine, even learning to eat with my hands. However, once I settled into a routine of attending school and meeting new people, my passion for exploration grew. The routine became exhausting, and I faced challenges with social norms, waking up early, and communicating in the local language, which was frustrating but manageable Despite these obstacles, I connected deeply with my host family and their friends, forming lasting bonds. Even with only two weeks left, I continue to meet new friends Living in India taught me a lot about myself and fostered significant personal growth
Throughout my exchange journey, I explored new cultures, languages, and places, but most importantly, I learned about myself. Staying with different host families, each with unique habits, taught me adaptability. My main host family introduced me to Indian life, where I learned to cook chapati, celebrated Diwali, and created lasting memories. I also enjoyed spending Christmas with another host family and friends. School was wonderful, with supportive classmates who helped me with studies and taught me their language. We celebrated festivals and birthdays together, fostering strong friendships. This experience helped my personal growth and become more independent, confident, and open to other cultures.
My journey in India began with doubts and excitement, driven by curiosity Initially chaotic yet welcoming, the environment was filled with people eager to share their traditions Staying with four host families offered unique experiences, teaching me about the world’s vastness
School was central to my daily life as I attended a Cambridge class where we communicated in English and the local language. Supportive international teachers made it a social and educational hub I participated in MUN programs, trekking, and social service, including teaching English and helping at an orphanage. Embracing festivals like Navratri and Diwali expanded my understanding of spirituality and shaped this transformative experience.
When I first applied for the program, I never anticipated how much it would change my life These 10 months have been a rollercoaster, filled with ups and downs, especially being away from home. Saying goodbye to my family and community was difficult, leading to moments of loneliness However, I learned that human connection transcends borders; the warmth and hospitality of the people here made me feel at home India opened me to new interests, like yoga and Indian music, and playing Indian music on my Western flute was rewarding Volunteering at a local government school to teach English and music was heartwarming, forging bonds despite language barriers. Leaving India is bittersweet, as I’ll miss the friendships and vibrant culture
During my exchange in Gujarat, India, I discovered the region's vibrant culture, known for its sweet food and captivating Garba dance. By the end of my stay, I felt like a "Gujju," making chai every morning and falling in love with Garba. My experience fostered a deep connection with myself and those around me, teaching me the value of asking questions while learning a new language, which led to daily discoveries. My host family guided me in approaching people, eating with my hands, and shared insights into religion and history I developed discipline, patience, and participated in Pooja and fasting during Navratri This exchange helped me grow personally and communally, leaving me with cherished memories of Gujarat
During my exchange year, I faced challenges adjusting to the new environment but quickly made friends from various countries at my school, which hosted international students
These friends helped me adapt, especially during visits to archaeological sites that enriched our study of history
Volunteering activities, like painting school walls and distributing food, made me feel like a global citizen. Celebrating Indian festivals with my host family was a highlight; Diwali, the festival of lights, filled me with joy, while my favorite, Holi, brought laughter as we joyfully threw colored powder at each other. I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve built and the personal growth I’ve experienced, and I know these friendships will last forever, even after returning home.
Before sharing my experience in India, I want to highlight the mindset changes I underwent Initially, I held stereotypes based on my own cultural experiences, but my time in India challenged those views. Arriving at the crowded Indira Gandhi Airport was exciting yet overwhelming I initially struggled to understand Indian English and vice versa, but I adapted within a few weeks Adjusting to Indian food was also a challenge, but I grew to love its flavors and variety. Despite these hurdles, I immersed myself in Hindi and adapted my study techniques This journey had its ups and downs, but I'm grateful for the valuable lessons and personal growth it provided.
Navigating daily life in another country was challenging, particularly with communication and understanding local customs. However, my experience with AFS India was transformative
During my first month, I faced significant culture shock but received immense support from my host family, school coordinator, roommates, and classmates, who helped ease my transition
Language barriers were tough, but my roommate’s patience and my host family's inclusion in daily activities improved my skills. Celebrating festivals like Diwali and Holi with friends strengthened our bonds and deepened my cultural understanding Overall, AFS India has shaped me into a more openminded and empathetic individual I am grateful for the experiences and relationships that fostered my growth.
Living as an exchange student in India has been truly transformative Immersing myself in a new culture, I’ve learned Hindi, embraced Bollywood, and experienced the joy of weddings and festivals. Beyond the language and traditions, I formed deep bonds with my host family and friends, which have enriched my life in unexpected ways
This journey has also helped me grow personally, expanding my worldview and self-awareness. Every moment, from navigating a different school environment to adapting to new customs, has shaped me into a more open-minded and resilient individual It’s an unforgettable experience that will stay with me forever
I had an incredible experience celebrating Holi with my host family We started by making halva and spent the night at a relative's house The next day, I played with my sisters, who treated me like a true part of their family. What made the experience even more special was learning about the history and significance of Holi from my host mom, who shared stories of how it's celebrated in different Indian cities and villages This diversity in celebrations fascinated me and deepened my appreciation for the festival
I had an amazing year being hosted in India My most memorable memory is visiting Jhansi with my host family, where I experienced my first train journey in India. We explored historical monuments, and the warmth of my host’s maternal family made the trip even more memorable.
I also traveled to Anantpur, Andhra Pradesh and Surat, Gujarat to compete in the 2024 Ultimate Frisbee Nationals Despite the tough matches, we enjoyed every moment on and off the field, creating lasting memories. It helped me in developing deep connections and friendships with teammates who now feel like family.
I really enjoyed my exchange year exploring India’s culture and diversity.
One of my favorite memories was having a car picnic with my Amma and Appa. After the picnic, we visited our relatives' house. During this time, I also spent some of my free time learning Hindi
The Indian music session was another highlight for me I loved learning about music and listening to beautiful tunes. This experience helped me understand and appreciate Indian culture even more
The highlight of my journey was celebrating Diwali with my host family and cohort mate, Gemma Diwali, the festival of lights, symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance My host sister gifted us new dresses, a Diwali tradition symbolizing new beginnings We spent the day setting off fireworks, making gulab jamun with my host mom, and later, watched a Tamil movie with extended family. The sky lit up with fireworks throughout the night, creating a magical atmosphere.
