“There is no greater joy than seeing young people eagerly embrace new experiences and seize every available opportunity”.
As someone passionate about youth development, I believe in the dynamic nature of young minds and their significant potential to generate innovative ideas and grow through diverse experiences. This personal growth is crucial in shaping them into active global contributors. AFS Intercultural Programs, known for its steadfast commitment to transformative intercultural exchanges, serves as a prime example of an organization that nurtures the development of such changemakers.

In the relatively short span of just two months with AFS, I have gained invaluable insights into promoting global citizenship and building connections with diverse cultures. This experience has been profoundly rewarding, highlighting the significant impact that intercultural exchange can have on both individuals and communities. The dynamic and collaborative environment at AFS has not only enhanced my understanding of our mission but has also greatly contributed to my personal and professional development.
I look forward to the many opportunities that AFS Intercultural Programs provides and am enthusiastic about what the future holds. I firmly believe that our shared dedication to nurturing intercultural understanding and promoting global engagement will lead young people to numerous transformative possibilities, such as broadening horizons, enhancing career opportunities, peacebuilding, fostering innovative thinking, community engagement, and embracing social responsibilities.

MEMBER SCHOOL STORIES

The third AFS Zonal Meet of the year for the Member Schools took place in the magnificent Scindia School, situated in the historic 6th century Gwalior Fort. ver 60 delegates including School Heads, Principals, Educators and students came together for the convention

Day 2 began with an energizing trek through the school's Ecological Park to the Khamba Taal. The delegation experienced the Living Laboratory that gives an opportunity to appreciate and learn about ecosystem management and conservation, learning about the ways and steps to replanting different species of plants
Ms. Diya Badgel, Ms. Sarita Badhwar and Ms. Ankita Pal from AFS India spoke about the various opportunities that AFS as a pandora’s box, has to offer to the students, educators, community and the Education Institutions, in becoming Active Global Citizens.

Students learnt to take sustainable actions through workshops of paper mache, clay modelling, tie and die and woodwork while Educators discoursed about Environment Protection and Role of Schools, led by Ms Sangeeta Jain This was followed by the Students’ Presentation from all the participating schools to share best practices, followed by a visit to the historic Fort Visit. GLOBAL STEM ACADEMIES PROGRAM 2024

The Global STEM Academies Program 2024 successfully concluded, providing participants from 15 countries a unique opportunity to explore the vital intersection of STEM and sustainability through a dynamic combination of digital and in-person learning experiences
This year's cohort included 11 outstanding students from across India, selected from 73 applications. Their journey through the program marked the completion of an intensive curriculum aimed at cultivating global competence, intercultural understanding, and a commitment to community service.

BRAZIL
Participants experienced a rich blend of exploration and learning, starting with sandboarding down vast dunes and engaging in the Model UN at SOI, where they refined their debating and diplomacy skills. Social work projects, such as Projeto Amar and ReforAmar, offered opportunities to contribute to the community while fostering empathy and teamwork

CHINA
Students immersed themselves in both cutting-edge technology and traditional culture. They explored Shanghai, participated in drone-making workshops at Jiao Tong University, and visited Ningbo and Changzhou to engage in activities like tie-dyeing and flight simulation. A visit to the Zeekr Company and the Changzhou-Taizhou Bridge offered insights into China's technological advancements.


EGYPT
Sustainability and cultural immersion were key elements of the experience in Egypt. Participants engaged in climate aid projects, built prototypes, learned Egyptian Arabic, and explored iconic sites such as the pyramids. Performing the Bahry Folk Dance and collaborating on sustainability initiatives enriched their understanding of global issues.
USA
It featured visits to the NASA Space Center and BP Helios Plaza, where students interacted with leading scientists and engineers, gaining exposure to space exploration and energy production. Collaborative projects with peers from 12 countries fostered creativity and critical thinking, while cultural exchange sessions deepened cross-cultural understanding.
The completion of the Global STEM Academies Program 2024 marks a significant milestone for all participants They are now equipped with the knowledge, skills, and global perspectives necessary to contribute to a sustainable future. The program's success is a testament to the power of international collaboration and the role of STEM in shaping a better world for all.
This year's participants have demonstrated exceptional resilience, adaptability, and leadership, ensuring that the program continues to inspire future generations of global changemakers

YES PROGRAM 2024-25
The YES Program for the 2024-2025 academic year officially commenced in mid-August, launching 30 bright students on their journey to the USA. These students were selected from a pool of over 440 applicants across India, with 27 newly chosen participants and 3 deferred students from the previous year Currently, 20 students have successfully arrived in the USA, settling in with their host families and beginning their school experience, while the remaining 10 will join them soon, ensuring all are in place by early September.

To ensure a smooth transition, the students participated in two critical orientations designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed for a successful exchange experience: the Pre-departure Orientation and the Gateway Orientation.
The Pre-departure Orientation (PDO) was a two and a half day in-person session held in New Delhi in the month of June 2024, where students were thoroughly prepared for their exchange experience. Key topics included travel adjustments, program rules, communication channels, and tips for cultural adaptation. Interactive activities helped students build skills for living with host families and adjusting to new environments
Following the Pre-departure Orientation, a two day Getaway Orientation took place right before their International travel, focusing on travel logistics, final presentations on program rules, and communication protocols. Students also had the opportunity to meet with U.S. Embassy official, gaining valuable insights before their departure to the USA

YES PROGRAM 2025-26 DISCOVERY DAY
The Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program's 2025-26 cycle witnessed a remarkable major event, Discovery Day, which brought together 18 chapters from across India, hosting over 240 enthusiastic students This special day focused on testing participants' knowledge, communication skills, and aptitude through a series of group activities and individual performances. The event highlighted the passion and dedication of these young participants, who showcased their talent and enthusiasm in every task they undertook. Their efforts reflected their commitment to the YES Program’s values of learning and exchange.





The backbone of this successful event, however, was the extraordinary team of volunteers. These dedicated individuals are the driving force behind the YES Program, playing an essential role in identifying, mentoring, and guiding potential candidates Their tireless contributions ensure the success of the program by facilitating cultural exchange opportunities for deserving Indian students. The YES Program owes its achievements to these volunteers, whose dedication, hard work, and mentorship empower the next generation of exchange scholars
Each chapter’s Discovery Day began with a warm welcome and Introduction. The participants were provided with the event schedule and agenda. Highlights of the day included lively panel discussions with YES Program alumni and senior Volunteers, who shared their experiences of studying in the U.S. These panels offered students invaluable insights into life as YES scholars, while interactive workshops covered key topics such as essay writing and preparing for panel interviews. Students and their parents were also able to participate in Q&A sessions, providing an open forum to address any queries or concerns about the program and its application process.

Behind the scenes, the volunteers worked relentlessly, recruiting and assessing students who met the program's eligibility criteria. They shared their own personal experiences to inspire and guide the participants and their parents and worked diligently to raise awareness of the YES Program in their communities. Throughout the recruitment process, volunteers provided encouragement and direction, ensuring that each applicant received the support they needed.

The YES Program recognizes and deeply values the irreplaceable role of its volunteers. Their efforts in shaping the program and identifying the best candidates are instrumental in the program's ongoing success We extend our heartfelt gratitude to these remarkable individuals for their unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions.
The students showed great enthusiasm and participated in all activities diligently. They were assessed throughout the day based on their performance and contribution. Overall, Discovery Day was highly interactive, supported by the combined efforts of AFS Nashik Chapter, coordinators, volunteers, students, and parents.

ASIA KAKEHASHI PROJECT + 2024
The Asia Kakehashi Project + 2024 has begun with 20 students departing from India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh starting their 4-month exchange program in Japan. The program kicked off with comprehensive online orientations Pre Departure and Gateway Orientation for both students and their parents, covering essential aspects such as cultural adaptation, program expectations, and practical tips for life in Japan.


The selection process for the program involved several stages. It started with the Pre-Application, where initial screenings and submissions were reviewed. This was followed by the Main Application, which included a detailed review and evaluation of applications Candidates then participated in a Panel Interview, where they were assessed by a panel of experts. In-home interviews with students and their families, known as Home Visits, were conducted to further evaluate suitability. Finally, a comprehensive assessment led to the Final Selection of participants.

SPAIN INTERCULTURAL
LANGUAGE CAMP 2024
Four Indian students completed a 4 weeks Spain Intercultural Language Camp in Malaga. They enhanced their Spanish skills through immersive learning and daily practice, while also gaining strong intercultural competence by exploring Spanish culture. The camp focused on confidence-building, personal growth, and teamwork, fostering independence and problem-solving. The students also benefited from cultural i i d t activities. My exchange program to Spain was transformative, taking me through vibrant cities like Seville, Córdoba, and Antequera. Despite initial language and cultural challenges, I quickly adapted to the slower pace of life and appreciated the kindness of the Spanish people. The friendships I made and the cultural experiences, such as Córdoba's architecture and Seville's Alcázar, were unforgettable. Immersing myself in Spanish improved my language skills, and my advice to future travelers is to embrace the experience fully. What I miss most are the lasting connections and the sense of belonging I felt.

Though I initially struggled with the language, I gained confidence through supportive classmates, teachers, and engaging workshops. Highlights included a town fair, a Spanish wedding, flamenco dancing, and performing Kathak at a talent show We explored cities like Nerja, Granada, and Córdoba, and I earned a diploma for my Spanish proficiency Returning to India, I cherish the cultural insights and friendships gained from this enriching experience

HOSTING STORIES YES ABROAD ARRIVAL ORIENTATION


Six U.S. participants began their cultural exchange journey in India as part of the 2024-25 YES Abroad Program. They were warmly welcomed with a traditional Indian ceremony, including a Chandan teeka, diyas, and garlands. A two-day arrival orientation introduced them to Indian culture, AFS guidelines, safety protocols, and other key aspects of the program. The orientation was led by AFS senior volunteer Ms. Zahra Ramish Rizvi and co-facilitated by AFS alumna Ms Sneha Ghanghas, ensuring the participants were well-prepared for their experience.
A highlight of the orientation was a cultural night, where participants showcased their own cultures, fostering cross-cultural understanding and providing fun moments for all. Additionally, Mr. C.J. Woods, a representative from the U S Embassy, enriched the event with an interactive session, sharing his personal experiences and offering valuable advice to the participants about their time in India.
Before departing to their respective host chapters, the participants attended a 20-hour Hindi language learning camp, giving them the foundation to communicate and engage more effectively during their stay.
The success of the program was made possible by the generous support of the host families, schools, and AFS hosting chapters, who welcomed the participants into their homes and communities. Their contributions play a vital role in making the exchange a meaningful and enriching experience for the students. The YES Abroad program fosters global understanding, and these participants are set to embark on a journey of personal growth and cultural immersion in India.



HOSTING STORIES
NSLI-Y
SUMMER PROGR

The NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth) six-week summer program from 28 June to 12 August 2024 concluded successfully, providing a comprehensive language and cultural immersion experience. The program included an Arrival Orientation, 120 hours of language classes, cultural excursions, a one-day trip to Agra with a visit to an elephant rescue center, and an End-of-Stay Orientation.
Arrival Orientation:

The students who arrived in Delhi in June, participated in an Arrival Orientation session designed to introduce them to the program's objectives, structure, and local environment The orientation covered important topics such as safety guidelines, cultural norms, and expectations. It also included ice-breaking activities to help students acclimate to their new surroundings and foster a sense of community among participants.
Language Classes:
Throughout the program, students completed 120 hours of language classes and the students were hosted by Delhi International School, Edge and Delhi World Public School, Noida Extension Classes were held five days a week, with a mix of interactive and traditional teaching methods to develop students' reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Cultural Excursions:
The program also featured several cultural excursions to provide students with experiences of the local culture, history, and traditions. Participants visited historical sites, museums, Delhi Haat, attended cultural workshops, and interacted with local communities A one-day trip to Agra was a key highlight of the program. Students visited the Taj Mahal, visited a shoe making factory and also did community service. During the Agra trip, students visited an elephant rescue center, where they gained insight into wildlife conservation efforts in India. These excursions enriched students’ understanding of the language in its cultural context, promoting cultural sensitivity and awareness.
End-of-Stay Orientation:
The program concluded with an end-of-stay orientation, where students reflected on their experiences and shared their learnings. The session included discussions on how to continue language learning and cultural exchange after returning home. Students received certificates of completion and celebrated their achievements in a closing ceremony.
Overall, the program was a resounding success, fulfilling its mission of empowering youth with language skills and cross-cultural competencies
OXFORD MUN INDIA 2024
FLAME UNIVERSITY, PUNE

The inaugural OxfordMUN India was held from 9 to 11 August, 2024 at the beautiful and expansive campus of FLAME University, Pune. The conference was curated by MU20: School of Opportunity and Oxford Global with ALLEN Global as title partner and AFS, Boarding Schools’ Association of India and Duke of Edinbrughs’ International Award for Young People as Community Partners.
The conference sought to provide more than 500 delegates from over 50 schools around the globe a stage to deliberate and discuss on the pressing issues of the world ranging from the field of human rights to surveillance technologies and even discussed the proliferation of antibiotic resistance.
DAY 1:
Set amidst the picturesque foothills of the Sahyadri Mountain Range, the venue of the conference provided a warm and welcoming start to the exhilarating Opening Ceremony. The ceremony began with a call for arms from the Chief Executive Officer of MU20, Mr. Tejas K. Jain who apprised the delegates, directors and dignitaries alike about the importance of young people in the population demographic of any country and motivated the students to work towards a better future for India.
Each of the 7 committees in the summit were headed up by a Director, who were either PhD scholars or pursuing a Masters’ from Oxford University and an Assistant Director, who were school students with an extraordinary interest in MUNs and were chosen following an extensive screening process
The committees were supervised by the Secretary General of OxfordMUN India 2024, Ms. Joana Perrone who also serves as a Managing Director of Oxford Global. Their presence was invaluable in ensuring procedural stability in every aspect of the conference. She was also kind enough to share her valuable insight by chairing one of the committees, guiding students in drafting resolutions for a better future
Students and Directors from countries such as Germany, Norway, Japan, Britain, Brazil, Finland and USA were exposed to proper Indian hospitality, food, culture and heritage. Their point of view that takes life from their life in developed countries was rather instrumental to elevating the level of debate in each committee
In the leadup to the evening, the Directors educated the students about the varying fields and pedagogies of instruction that awaited them at the prestigious Oxford University in the Oxford Power Talk.
The day concluded at the Global Village Gala where delegates from around the world and India were asked to showcase their own culture and heritage through their own indigenous dresses. The delegates wore their Kimonos, Kurta and Sherwani and some Directors were even seen sporting Banarasi Sarees
DAY 2:
The conference erupted with rhetoric on the second day of the eventful summit with delegates from around the globe pitching their ideas to further their cause in the UN DISEC deliberated upon a better global framework for oversight on surveillance technologies whilst SOCHUM worked for the preservation and promotion of indigenous people and their culture. SPECPOL supported international cooperation in the digital realm of the internet while UNCSW worked to integrate women in international affairs through feminist foreign policies. On the one hand, WHO aimed to implement global strategies to halt the proliferation of antibiotic resistance and on the other, UNEP wanted global partnerships to secure sustainable water resources. In the field of Human Rights, UNHCR enhanced the integration of refugees into host communities.
The exhaustive and extensive debate came to a soothing end with the Masquerade Eve that required the delegates to put on their finest tuxedos to a formal setting wherein the delegates could interact in a warm and pleasant setting.

DAY 3:


Before delving into the world of for- not for again, the participants were engaged in an athletic meet in the morning where they were asked to showcase their gymnastic and academic prowess in activities such as swimming and a team building exercise in the Oxford Power Drill.
The conference came to a crescendo with the documentation of resolutions in the committees and a tearful goodbye to the delegates and directors alike. The delegates bid each other farewell and signed each other’s placards as they waited for the awards to be announced in the auditorium

AFS YES ALUMNI



The Chennai Chapter volunteers hosted a career guidance session at Chennai High School, Kottupuram, for over 60 tenth-grade students. Led by dedicated AFS-YES alumni, the session aimed to provide valuable insights into the evolving job market and explore a range of career options pertinent to their educational stage. The volunteers shared their personal experiences and offered guidance on aligning career choices with individual interests and skills.

The session featured an interactive exploration of Ikigai, a Japanese philosophy that emphasises finding joy and fulfilment in life. Students participated in activities designed to help them identify the intersections of Passion, Mission, Profession, and Vocation. They were encouraged to reflect on what they love, what they excel at, what they can be compensated for, and what the world needs. This approach aimed to inspire students to make informed decisions about their future career paths by aligning their interests and skills with potential opportunities in the job market.
The event successfully developed an environment of motivation and selfdiscovery, encouraging students to pursue careers that align with their passions and societal needs. The session concluded with an open discussion, allowing students to ask questions and seek advice from the alumni volunteers
