UNCF holds 79th annual ‘A Mind Is A …’ Gala
For 79 years the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has had a tremendous impact on making college a reality for African Americans in need. The National “A Mind Is...’ Gala celebrates the efforts of UNCF supporters in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area. The gala was held on March 2 at the Marriot Marquis in Washington, D.C. This event brought contributors and volunteers together for great food, fellowship, entertainment and philanthropy.

Howard University holds 156th Charter Day Convocation

Thefounding of Howard University (HU) is commemorated annually at the Charter Day Convocation and the Charter Day Dinner. This year’s Charter Day Convocation was held on March 3 at the Cramton Auditorium on the HU campus. The Charter Day Dinner occurred at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Washington, D.C., on March 4. The events recognized the history and accomplishments of the university since its inception in 1867. The achievements of those who matriculated at HU or support the endeavors of the institution were on full display.

The Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of Metropolitan Baltimore (KAPFMB) and the Baltimore Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity recently held the 50th Annual “Night in Kappa Vegas” Gala fundraising event. The men packed out Martin’s West in Baltimore with more than 1400 guests who joined them to “party with a purpose.”
The annual fundraising event, which included a silent auction and casino games, took place on March 3. According to information released by the organizations for press, funds raised will
“support community philanthropic programs, scholarship programs, and mentorship programs.”
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity was founded on the campus of Indiana University on Jan. 5, 1911.
As part of their commitment to the community, students in the area have received more than $500,000 in scholarships from KAPFMB. The organization has mentored more than 400 at-risk teen males in the local area and operates the Kappa Youth and Community Center, located at 1207 Eutaw Place in Baltimore City.
