Statue of Nelson Mandela Unveiled at South African Embassy in Washington, DC

H.E. Ebrahim Rasool, South African Ambassador to the United States (photo by KDNA / AMIP News) Nelson Mandela Statue insert by JD Okhai Ojeikere (Dynamic Africa Drum)

Saturday, September 21, 2013 Washington, DC

A statue of former South African president Nelson Mandela was unveiled Saturday at the grounds of the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C., the site where four protestors were arrested in 1984 – an event credited with spurring anti-apartheid sanctions against South Africa. The 3 meter statue, a replica of the sculpture outside the gates of Drakenstein Correctional Centre in South Africa where Mandela was released after 27 years in apartheid-era jails, is the work of South African artist Jean Doyle, who modeled the sculpture from photographs of Mandela leaving the prison in 1990, his fist is raised triumphantly over his head. Ebrahim Rasool, South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, noted the statue stands across the street from a statue of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who is also depicted with his hand over his head but with two fingers raised, flashing the V for victory sign. Suggesting the two statues are engaged in a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors, Rasool noted that “rock beats scissors.” A plaque at the base of the statue quotes from Mandela’s address to a joint session of Congress months after his release in 1990.

“The stand you took established… that here we have friends… fighters against racism who feel hurt because we are hurt, who seek our success because they too seek the victory of democracy over tyranny. I speak… of the millions of people throughout this great land who stood up and engaged the apartheid system in struggle. Let us keep our arms locked together so that we form a solid phalanx against racism… Let us ensure that justice triumphs without delay”

Below is the speech delivered by H.E. Ebrahim Rasool Transcribed by AMIP News

Thank you very much Felicia Mabusa Sato.

Our dear minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and minister Rob Davies, senior officials of the South African government from all departments who are here, chairperson of the African Union Ms

Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in the United States of America and all members of the Diplomatic Corps, Congresswoman Maxine Walters and all the members of Congress and Senate at various levels of government and legislatures who honor us with your presence here today, thank you very much for being here.

The Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development Mr. Rajiv Shah, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and members of the US administration who have honored us with your presence here today, Randall Robinson, Peloosi, Mayor Dinkins and all the members who have laid deep footprints around the statue of Nelson Mandela, thank you very much for being with us today. Rev Forbes, Imam Talib Shareef and all the leaders of faith who bless us with your presence, the sponsors who have made this possible from Old Mutual’s first request right to the last donation, thank you very much for realizing this great moment for us. The Deputy Chief of mission Johnny Moloto whose seat waits for him here and he can stop working now and let others do it, thank you very much for leading Team South Africa, the staff at the embassy into making this a truly memorable day and a memorable occasion. (Applause) The Consul Generals, the Honorary Consuls who have from all the different places in the United States where they represent us with such dignity, such energy and such vision, thank you very much for making this trip to Washington, DC. Dr. Steve Mokone Kalamazoo, Rev Mankikola, Dr. Bilabakazi, all the veterans of the South African Diaspora, thank you very much for your presence here today. Ladies and gentlemen, comrades and friends, welcome, thank you very much for being here.

It was 83 years ago that Mahatma Ghandi marched for 24 days in India to the seaside to extract salt from the sea. In the eyes of the British, this was illegal and he was eventually arrested for it and all others who took salt from the sea because Britain wanted the

fighting against the energy deficit in initiatives such as Power Africa. This partnership is born out of the sacrifices made by people like yourself and many others who were arrested there where Madiba stands today. Those in Boston who sat in in Chase Manhattan Bank to get them to divest; those of the Long Shoreman workers who refused to unload the ship for 11 days until that ship had to turn around; those authors in Hollywood and all over who refused millions of dollars to play in Sun City or in anywhere else in South Africa; this tribute of Nelson Mandela is as much a tribute to you because when Nelson Mandela addressed Congress on the 24th of June, 1990, in the 101st Joint Sitting of Congress, this is what Nelson Mandela said and I quote him ” .. the stand you took established that here in the United States we are friends, fighters against racism who feel hurt because we are hurt, who seek our success because they too seek victory of democracy over tyranny. I speak of the millions of people throughout this great land who stood up and engaged the Apartheid System in struggle. Let us keep our arms locked together so that we form a solid phalanx against racism. Let us ensure that justice triumphs without delay.” That vision of Nelson Mandela must continue. Today we also celebrate the exorcism of this building. We exorcise this building where Apartheid was justified for so many decades. We exorcise attempts (applause) we exorcise attempts from this building to buy constructive engagement and to invest in it. We exorcise from this building where racism that sought to legitimize itself from the segregation that you too suffered. But in a true South African spirit our exorcism is not destructive – it is a cleansing, it is a healing, it is the ability to combine the best of the old with the best of the new. The classical architecture of the old will now come and join with the post modern architecture of the new that now holds it together, retaining the recognizable form but infusing a profound new content into this building, strengthening old foundations but placing at the service of a new set of inclusive aspirations. What you see here is the realization of a vision – a vision dreamt of my Ambassador Sonn, thought through by Ambassador Sheila Sisulu, brought to life … brought to life by Ambassador Barbara Masekela, carried forward by Ambassador Nhlapo, implemented by Johnny Moloto. May this building and this statue always symbolize the ultimate triumph of the human spirit over adversity, the superiority of morality over legality, the resilience of principled unity over technical difference, the victory of As I look at who we have gathered here around the statue I feel humbled to represent a country that pro- soft power over military might. monopoly on salt. Mahatma Ghandi knew that it was illegal but he certainly knew that it was moral. Thus began India’s march to independence through the birth of Satyagraha. Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. marched on Washington and shared his dream with the world and with the United States. He dreamt of an America free of racism an segregation replaced by freedom and equality and he dreamed that his children will be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Twenty-three years ago, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela took another step in his long walk to freedom out of the prison gates of Victor Verster and as he stepped there after 27 years he started a journey that began to touch our lives in a completely different way and it is that step that we immortalize here today in Washington, DC. Each one’s journey dramatized simple truths that what is legal isn’t always moral; that judgements are not always equal to justice; that the resolve of the human spirit is more powerful than the might of the empire or the state. Today, in immortalizing that step that Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela took out of prison as he raised his fist in triumph, it was the triumph of him – his spirit over his captors, the people’s triumph over eagle; the triumph of global solidarity over parochialism and selfishness and separateness. Today, we also reconnect the United States … in the United States, Mahatma Ghandi’s statue just further down the road, Martin Luther King’s memorial on the Mall and today we add Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela here outside the South African Embassy on Massachusetts Avenue. (Applause) We close a golden triangle of leaders – leaders who do what is right, not always what is popular; who lead by example, not by dictat who unite people around vision, not mobilize them around fears; who give them hope and not despair at the most pressing times in the history of the world. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela is revered because he never saw himself as an individual but part of the great relay race of leaders and people who hand the baton from one to the other adding their special strengths but never unmindful of what has been laid before them and unmindful of who will come after them. Nelson Mandela is revered never as a saint because he battled his soul and therefore he was able to battle evil in the world. Nelson Mandela, despite what many people may say, is revered never because he performed miracles but asserted that what happened in South Africa can happen anywhere else in the world whether in the intractable problems of the Middle East, what happened in South Africa can happen there. In the ongoing troubles of North Africa, it can happen there. In the challenges of Asia, it can happen there. In the challenges of the Caribbean, of Central America, of southern America, even in the United States, what happened in South Africa is relatable everywhere else in the world. (Applause)

Clinicians and law enforcement officers developed plans to communicate with one another for collaborative care for persons living with mental illness.

MOULTRIE — Chief Frank N. Lang Sr. of the Moultrie Police Department recently returned from a trip to the west African nation of Liberia. His trip, in collaboration with the Carter Center Liberia Mental Health Program, sought to teach local law enforcement officers some of the techniques used by the Moultrie Police Department to help people in a mental health crisis get the help they need.

The Carter Center Mental Health Program invited the Liberian National Police and the National Police Training Academy to a three-day workshop to evaluate the possibility of adapting the Moultrie Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model for Liberia. In addition to Lang, with support from the Liberia-based Carter Center staff, the Center and American mental health team members included Pat Strode from the Georgia affiliate of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI); Michael Compton, a psychiatrist and research expert on CIT from George Washington University; Brandon Kohrt, a psychiatrist from the Duke Global Health Institute; and Elise Blasingame, an intern with The Carter Center in Liberia.

Lang, the only law enforcement practitioner on the trip, was able to provide his experience in utilizing CIT with the Moultrie Police Department.

Fourteen police officers, including two corrections officers from different parts of Liberia, were recruited to participate along with 17 Carter Center-trained local mental health clinicians.

“Mental health issues are a concern for more than just Moultrie; it is a global problem,” he said.

Based on research on stigma in Liberia, led by Kohrt, the Carter Center Mental Health Liberia project sought to prepare law enforcement personnel to better respond to individuals with mental illness who come in contact with the law. Critical to the training is the col- Source:sierraexpressmedia.com laboration between law enforcement and mental health personnel. Officers participating in the program said that the workshop had a powerful impact on how they think about persons living with mental illness.

One patrol officer reported, “I used to think that witchcraft made people mentally ill. Now I know that’s not true.” Another officer reported, “I thought crazy people were just crazy, but they are our

SECRETARY KERRY: Good morning, everybody. It’s my privilege to welcome to Washington and to the State Department His Excellency, the President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. And as you rightly said, we have been engaging with different stakeholders in Somalia. The federal government has the leadership, the parliament, all visiting different corners of Somalia to consult on this event. And the product of that consultation was the recent compact document signed in Brussels of the 16th of this month. I, myself, and the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House, the parliamentarians, key ministers have been traveling all over Somalia. Although the situation in traveling locally is very difficult, but even then, you have to sit with the people, listen them, share with them the plans that we are intending, and asking them the type of Somalia they want to see in the future.

The United States, obviously, has been engaged in helping Somalia fight back against tribal terror and the challenges to the cohesion of the state of Somalia. And the President and his allies have really done an amazing job of fighting back and building a state structure. BERLIN — A chemist and an actor — both with family roots in Senegal — have become Germany’s first black federal legislators, according to official election results released Monday.

They were among 34 people with immigrant backgrounds to win seats in Sunday’s election, up from 21 in the previous term, said the Migration Media Service, a group that provides figures on immigration in Germany.

Although nearly one in five of Germany’s 80 million people are immigrants, or the children or grandchildren of immigrants, relatively few have made it into the federal legislature. Until now there were no black members in parliament, despite more than 500,000 people of recent African origin believed to be living in Germany.

“My election into the German parliament is of historical importance,” said Karamba Diaby, 51, a Senegalese-born chemist who moved to the city of Halle in 1986 after receiving a scholarship to study in communist East Germany.

Diaby, who gained German citizenship in 2001, said his priority would be to promote equal opportunities in education. “Every child born in Germany should have the chance to be successful in school regardless of social background or the income of their parents,” he said.

The other black elected Sunday was Charles Huber, 56, an actor born in Munich to a Senegalese father and a German mother. Huber is a member of Chancellor

Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, which won the election with 41.5 per cent of the vote.

Merkel’s party also now has its first Muslim lawmaker in the Bundestag. Cemile Giousouf was elected in the western town of Hagen. The 35year-old was born in Germany to Turkish immigrant parents.

Several lawmakers of Turkish origin have previously been elected to the lower house, but most were with the Social Democratic Party, which Diaby represents, the environmentalist Green Party or the Left Party.

“Measured against the 630 seats in parliament, about 5.4 per cent of deputies now come from immigrant families,” the Migration Media Service noted. “In the population as a whole their share is more than three times as high, with about 19 per cent.”

“I wish to confirm we have a new liphovela (royal fiancée),” announced Hlangabeza Mdluli, the overseer of the maidens.

Dlamini was presented to the king and the Swazi people at a Reed Dance in the southern provincial capital, Nhlangano, on Saturday. The main Reed Dance, at which Mswati has chosen previous wives, was held in central Swaziland last month.

In recent years an additional Reed Dance has been held in the south to broaden the king’s choice from his young female subjects.

Dlamini was a finalist in the Swaziland Miss Cultural Heritage beauty pageant this year.

Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla, attended the dance in traditional attire and brandished a fighting stick and cowhide shield when he reviewed a formation of maidens lined up for Mswati.

A hundred members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) election monitoring team also attended. The election observers jostled to get their pictures taken with the king.

Swaziland holds parliamentary elections on Friday, although its parliament does not have any power in sub-Saharan Africa’s only absolute monarchy.

“No doubt the king timed the Reed Dance and the public presentation of his new fiancée to entertain the SADC election monitors,” said Solomon Masango, a local youth guidance counsellor. “He succeeded. Everyone who comes to Swaziland wants to see the king’s harem. They were thrilled to get their pictures taken with the king.”

Mswati’s fiancée will be cloistered in one of the king’s many palaces until the wedding, to be held in private next year. – Foreign Service ### Source:bbcnews.com

President Obama Meets Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan issues of energy and power. Nigeria is a major energy producer, but it’s also an important energy consumer. And as many of you know who were on the trip that I took to Africa just recently, we are really focused on how we can help to bring electricity and power generation throughout Africa — not just in the big cities but also in the rural areas, and Nigeria is a potential partner in that process.

We want to develop the human capital throughout the continent and in Nigeria. And that’s why I’m excited about the Young African Leaders Initiative that is going to allow us to have young African leaders from across the continent, including Nigeria, here in the United States where they can interact with top leaders here in our universities, our businesses, and that will further strengthen the ties between our two countries.

Remarks By President Obama Before Bilateral Meeting Waldorf Astoria Hotel New York, New York PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, I appreciate very much the opportunity to meet once again with President Jonathan and his delegation. Obviously, Nigeria is one of the most powerful and fastest-growing countries in the world. I think that’s testified by the fact that President Jonathan is going to have the opportunity to ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange. (Laughter.) I think it signifies how important Nigeria is becoming in the global economy.

We have a very strong relationship between the United States and Nigeria. It’s not just based on government-to-government relations, but also people-to-people relations. And we have an outstanding Nigerian-American community here in the United States that is making incredible contributions in every field every single day.

President Jonathan has committed to building on the democratic process that we’ve seen in Nigeria in the past. The last election that brought President Jonathan to power was a hallmark on the continent and in Nigeria in terms of free and fair elections. And I know that he is committed to making sure that the elections in 2015 move in that same fashion.

We’re going to be able to have an opportunity to talk about the

And we’re going to have an opportunity to discuss some significant challenges on the security front in Nigeria. In the northern regions of Nigeria we’ve seen the emergence of one of the most vicious terrorist organizations in the world — the Boko Haram. It presents an extraordinary security challenge for the people of Nigeria, and we want to be cooperative in that process of building capacity inside Nigeria to deal with that terrorist threat, but doing so in a way that is consistent with human rights. Because we strongly believe that the best way to undermine the agenda of those who would do violence is to make sure that governments are responsive to the needs of people and following rule of law.

On that topic let me just make one last point. I’ve had the opportunity to speak with President Kenyatta directly about the terrible tragedy that’s happened in Nairobi, and we are providing all the cooperation that we can as we deal with a situation that has captivated the world.

I want to express personally my condolences to not only President Kenyatta, who lost some family members in the attack, but to the Kenyan people. We stand with them against this terrible outrage that’s occurred. We will provide them with whatever law enforcement support that is necessary. And we are confident that Kenya, which has been a pillar of stability in Eastern Africa, will rebuild.

Readout of President Obama’s Meeting with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary September 23, 2013

President Obama met President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria today in New York. The presidents reaffirmed their commitment to fighting terrorism, including the importance of bringing the insurgency in northern Nigeria to an end. The President underscored the importance of combating terrorism via a comprehensive approach that creates economic opportunity and ensures that human rights are protected and respected. President Obama also reaffirmed U.S. support for strengthening transparent, democratic governance, and the importance of ensuring that the upcoming elections in Nigeria are peaceful, transparent, and credible.

The leaders agreed to deepen cooperation on enhancing reliable access to energy, including through Nigeria’s participation in Power Africa, and to support young entrepreneurs and public servants through President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative. The two leaders agreed to stay in close touch as our countries continue to work together to promote our shared interests in advancing development, empowering youth, expanding trade and investment, and creating broad-based prosperity for people across Nigeria. ###

But this I think underscores the degree to which all of us as an international community have to stand against the kind of senseless violence that these kinds of groups represent. And

Why Wedding Rings Are Worn On 10 Etiquette Tips Men Should Know The 4th Finger Of The Left Hand October 2013

Wedding rings through different stages in history have been worn on different fingers, including the thumb, and on both the left and right hands.

According to a tradition believed to have been derived from the Romans, the wedding ring is worn on the left hand ring finger because there was thought to be a vein in the finger, referred to as the ‘Vena Amoris’ or the ‘Vein of Love’ said to be directly connected to the heart. However, scientists have shown this is actually false. Despite this, this myth still remains regarded by many (hopeless romantics) as the number one reason rings are worn on the fourth finger.

expensive the material, the more love shown to the receiver; the value of the ring also demonstrated the wealth of the giver.

The Roman’s also eventually adopted this tradition but with their own twist. Rather than offering a ring to a woman as a symbol of love, they awarded them as a symbol of ownership. Roman men would “claim” their woman with the giving of a ring. Roman betrothal rings were later made of iron and called “Anulus Pronubus.” They symbolized strength and permanence. It is also said that the Romans were the first to engrave their rings.

It was not until about 860 that the Christians used the ring in marriage cereAnother theory thought to be behind the ring monies; even then, it was not the simple being placed on the left hand by Christians plain band as we know it. It usually was seems a little more plausible. Early Christian marriages had a ritual to wear the wedding ring highly decorated with engraved doves, lyres, or two linked hands. in the third finger. As the priest recited during the binding ,”In the name of the Father, the The Church discouraged such rings as ‘heaSon and the Holy Spirit”, he would take the ring and touch the thumb, the index finger, and thenish’ and, around the 13th century, wedding and betrothal rings were considerably the middle finger; then, while uttering simplified, and given a more spiritual look “Amen”, he would place the ring on the ring which was very aptly expressed by a finger, which sealed the marriage. Bishop when he dubbed it a “symbol of the A more practically based theory is that the soft union of hearts.” metal (traditionally gold for wedding rings) is less worn or injured on the finger of the left hand, due to most of the world being right handed. Further, the fourth finger on the left hand is probably the second to the least used finger on a person’s hands outside of pinkies. www.myjoyonline.com Pinkies being small, making a small ring with little surface area to decorate, perhaps motivated people to then place it on the next least used finger, namely the fourth finger on the left hand, which is roughly the size of the other fingers.

Wedding rings today are a billion dollar sentiment of love, but no one can really say for sure when this age old tradition actually started.

Some believe that the oldest recorded exchange of wedding rings comes from ancient Egypt, about 4800 years ago. Sedges, rushes and reeds, growing alongside the well-known papyrus were twisted and braided into rings for fingers an other decorative ornaments worn by the women in those days.

The circle was the symbol of eternity, with no beginning or end, not only to the Egyptians, but many other ancient cultures. The hole in the center of the ring also had significance. It wasn’t just considered a space, but rather a gateway, or door; leading to things and events both known and unknown. To give a woman a ring signifies never-ending and immortal love.

The materials these rings were made of didn’t last very long and soon were substituted with rings made of leather, bone or ivory. The more

What ever happened to good old-fashioned manlook at home. The only exceptions here are ners? Not many men follow the simplest rules these well-trimmed beards, moustaches, or goatdays and consequently, it shows in how they behave. ees.

Aside from the momentary fashionable trends that seem to grip society every half generation, good etiquette never goes out of style. Whether it is tipping appropriately, or knowing where to place the forks, here are 10 most important tips men can use:

1. Restaurants - Whenever dining out (especially in a formal setting), be sure to allow your female partner to be seated first. You can control this situation by pulling out a chair for her and seating yourself afterwards. For those of you who dare to be chivalrous -- it is common practice to stand when a woman gets up to leave the table.

2. Table Manners - When sitting at a table (either in a restaurant or at home), your elbows should never rest on the eating surface. Elbows on the table are acceptable only between meal courses, or in extremely informal settings like bars or pubs.

8. Coughing and Sneezing - You were probably told as a child: "Cover your mouth when you cough!" This is still good practice, but you should go one step further.

If you have a handkerchief or some tissue nearby, try sneezing or coughing directly into it and when finished -- throw it away. Serious respiratory illnesses like influenza, whooping cough, and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) are spread through airborne germs, and germs on your hands.

If no tissue is available, sneeze or cough into your sleeve. This helps keep germs out of the air and off your hands.

9. Invitations - Believe it or not, there are a few occasions when you should never turn down an invite or request for attendance. Two such events are requests for funeral assistance and honoree events. If you are asked to act as a pallbearer at a funeral or You should speak and write "Mrs." when addressing if a banquet or dinner is being held in your married woman. For any woman who is unmarried, honor -- you should make every attempt to or if you are not sure about her marital status - use attend. the term "Ms." For girls and teens under the age of 17 years, you should use "Miss". 10. What to Wear - Knowing what to wear 3. Addressing Women - Did you know that there is a correct and incorrect way to address a woman, both verbally and in writing? It all depends on her age and marital status.

4. Hats and Caps - Never enter a building with your hat

5. Flowers - Unless you mean to say -- "I love you my dear friend", something other than red or pink roses should be given to female acquaintances. Roses are a symbol of love, romantic interest, or "respectful love" -- as in situations when giving roses to a mother on Mother's Day.

For occasions when a female is not a love interest (i.e. birthdays, graduations, promotions, or new friendships) -- choose from a variety of "friendly flowers" like Lilies, Sunflowers, Daisies, Chrysanthemums, Bamboo, or Irises.

6. Personal Property - If Possible, men should refrain from touching, moving, or interfering with one's personal property. For example, you should never touch and move an unknown woman's purse -even if it is in your way. You should also avoid touching clothes, vehicles, equipment, or any personal items belonging to another.

and when to wear it is important if you want to save your reputation. There is a difference in casual, business casual, and professional dress. In reality, it all depends on the event. If attending a day wedding, school play, or luncheon - a button-down with slacks is the way to go. A formal wedding, class reunion, job interview, or business meeting all require a button-down, tie, and slacks. Jackets and/or blazers are necessary when presenting, facilitating formal meetings, or when in a place of recognition.

Shorts of any length and t-shirts should not be worn -- even if an event is labeled as "casual". The only obvious exceptions are outdoor events such as barbecues, pool parties, and family reunions.

There you go. Those are 10 great etiquette tips that should keep you from making a total fool out of yourself. Use at least five of them, and it is likely that someone will label you as a "true gentleman".

The only exceptions are returning lost or misplaced items to their rightful owners, or if an emergency calls for your intervention. More strict rules apply to home properties such as mailboxes. Not only is Source: www.fashionbeans.com opening someone's mailbox bad etiquette -- it is also illegal.

7. Shaving - Men do not like to shave, but it is a necessity in certain situations. When attending such events as weddings, formal gatherings, reunions, business meetings, job interviews, etc. - your face should be stubble free. If you are venturing into an unfamiliar territory, it is best to leave that shadowy

Be Assured of God’s Promises Her Page

M

Dr. Miriam C. Gyimah

y inspiration for this essay comes from two songs. One is an old favorite hymn for many, “Blessed Assurance” and the other is a more recent but limited Christian song in Akan, by one Margaret Mensah, “Ebeba Mu”, translated “it will happen or it will come to pass”. The idea here is that whatever God has promised or prophesied about you will come to pass. So fret not, but patiently and faithfully await the fulfillment of His promises. I recall that when I first heard the song “Ebeba Mu” by Margaret Mensah, I couldn’t help but to play it continuously. The song ministered to me so much so that each time the track ended, I would press the replay button just to hear the song once more. I did it so many times without tiring and I always felt the same impact of the lyrics, if not more. Not only did the song minister to me, but it also encouraged and strengthened me when I listened to it. Then, there is “Blessed Assurance”, a song I am quite familiar with, having been raised on a lot of hymns. However, I never really thought deeply about the lyrics until a week ago when the song came to me several times. I found myself singing it in worship and praise and much like the response I had to Mensah’s song, I was encouraged and strengthened, more importantly, I was reassured. I felt and believed that despite how long the Lord was taking to answer some petitions I had put before Him, the song was accurate. I was reminded then and there that if He had done it for me before and done it so beautifully, He would do it again. Further, I was assured that indeed, Jesus is mine and that if He is mine, then as John 14:14 says, if I ask anything in His name, He will do it. Two days after completing an essay for publication, I got the idea of writing on this topic. My immediate response to myself was: “God, you didn’t wait at all in giving me a subject this time.” I usually do not have topics floating about in my mind right after I finish an essay. Usually, I have to spend the next couple of weeks after submitting an essay, praying and pondering about what God would want me to share next. But God does what He wants to do when He wants to do it, and sensing that this topic was coming from Him, I took pen to paper to begin writing down the thoughts flowing in my mind, so that I wouldn’t lose

them, for I knew God had something to share with someone. I hope reading it will provide you with the entire message that God wanted to impart to you. So here I am writing on the subject burning in me today. Be assured. We all know that life is a journey marked with many bumps and a lot of waiting and the trying of our patience. But I am sure that Christians would confess readily that life certainly is much better lived when one is a Christian, because we have an advocate, a Father, a lover of our souls, who is always there for us. What is great about Christianity is that it is filled with the promises of God. However, what might not be so wonderful for us is that most of these promises require that we wait until we receive them. Sometimes, we wait so much that we begin to doubt God, especially when these promises are not forthcoming and it is rather hardship after hardship or delay after delay of their fruition that we face. One might argue that often, things take a turn for the worse when we so readily anticipate the fulfillment of our promises. Consequently, we doubt and even give up on such promises and God’s words. We then become saddened and even bitter that God has forgotten us. But the truth is that He never forgot us and He is yet poised to fulfill His words and make it happen for us. In the book of Habakkuk, Habakkuk the prophet asks of God “How long O Lord, will I call for help, and You will not hear? I cry to You, ‘Violence!’ Yet You do not save” (Hab. 1:1). Habakkuk goes on to cry unto God about his plight. But God answers him saying, “For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay” (Hab. 2:3). Here, God assures His prophet that whatever He God has promised to do or intends to do will come to pass, despite the outward condition of things. It does not matter that it appears it is taking a long time. What we may consider as delay is only part of God’s timing and planning. He has it all ordered and He knows the best time to fulfill His word. We might think that the fulfillment of the vision or promise is delayed, but according to His own timing, God states emphatically that “it will not delay” and more importantly, “it will certainly come”. The songs I discussed earlier confirm this Biblical passage and also substantiate a lot of actual experiences of God’s children. Let’s share a few examples of God being true to his promises, so that we can rest assured that when He tells us He will do something for us or in our lives, He will surely do it in spite of what we think and certainly, despite how Satan, and even others, will attempt to hinder the fulfillment of the promise. The story of Joseph is a prime example of God’s promises coming to pass in His child’s life. Joseph, one of the two sons of the once barren Rachel, was beloved by his father Jacob and God. Joseph was so beloved that his brothers were jealous of him and even hated him to the point where they wanted to murder him. As a young boy, God revealed Joseph’s future to him, that he would be greater than his

brothers and even his parents. To hear such prophesies about his future made his brothers even more intent on killing him. To get rid of him and in an attempt to put an end to his dreams and God’s prophesies for Joseph’s life, his brothers sold him into slavery. The point is that even as a slave, God’s intentions for Joseph could not be suppressed and later, when falsely accused of attempted rape and imprisoned, God still delivered Joseph from this devastating situation and honored him as the second most powerful person in all of Egypt. Furthermore, when Israel was struck with famine and Joseph’s brothers had to run to Egypt for sustenance, Joseph, the brother they thought they had gotten rid off, was the person to whom they had to submit for their survival. The Lord’s promise on Joseph’s life came to pass. Despite how much others positioned themselves against him and God’s word on his life, it is what God had said that came to be. Another example of the fulfillment of God’s promise on His children’s lives is taken from the story of Abraham and Sarah. The Lord promised Abraham that He would make a mighty nation of him, yet for many decades, Abraham and Sarah were unable to bear children. Sarah passed her prime and no longer had hope. She even decided to take matters into her own hands and gave her maid to mate with her husband so that God’s promise for him will happen. But this act didn’t fulfill God’s prophesy and only brought problems into the couple’s life. Finally, when she was 90 years old, God’s promise for Abraham and Sarah was fulfilled with their son Isaac. Who would have thought that these old people would conceive and bear a child, when medical science is against it? But then again, who can stand against the promises of God? While others were procreating many children to continue their legacy, Abraham and Sarah gave birth to only one child, Isaac. And Isaac also fathered only two children, Jacob and Esau. And through one child, Jacob, the nation of Israel was established. Again, what God had promised in His servant’s life surely came to pass and even today, we see the millions of descendents of Abraham, a fulfillment of God’s promise. Again, when God’s promise is on your life, it does not matter what anyone will do in an attempt to hinder it. The God of Abraham and Joseph is there to see to it that His word upon your life will be fulfilled. Take King David, for instance. When God became displeased with King Saul, He instructed the Prophet Samuel to anoint David, for he would be king of Israel. David was thus anointed at the age of 25 to become the future king of Israel. But it didn’t happen overnight. What age did he finally become king? David came to the throne of Judah at age 30 and of all of Israel at 37! What was the delay? King Saul was still alive and although God no longer considered him as the king, because he had displeased Him, Saul nevertheless still ruled the kingdom. What’s more, because he was jealous of David, Saul attempted to kill him numerous times. As a result, David was always on the run, living in caves, and depending on God to make it alive just one more day. The promise on David’s life as king was delayed for many years, but God’s word came to be. To demonstrate that these examples are not just

of old, but that they are still everyday occurrences, I will briefly share the following. I know a man to whom God promised career and financial success. This man had advanced degrees, but at the time that the Lord gave him this revelation, he was out of a job and would not be hired by anyone. Even positions for which he was overqualified were not to be granted to him. Every door was shut in his face and he remained unemployed for years. How does one hold on to a revelation of prosperity and success when all avenues to that path are closed off to him? One could only look to God and fiercely hold on to His word, and that is what this man did. And because God is so faithful, in His own appointed time, He rewarded this man with more than he could have wished for or dreamed of. Furthermore, God did it in a way that made the man know that it was indeed God’s own providential hand that had led him there. When you consider the stories of Joseph and King David, and the little you’ve learned about this man, you must agree that God is faithful to His word. Finally, I know a couple who, having married for nearly ten years, are now experiencing the joys of being blessed with a child. This couple had hopes that they would begin raising a family right away, but who knew that the promise of childbearing would be delayed for so long. One can only imagine what they suffered when all their married friends and family members of childbearing age readily conceived and bore children, only to watch and attend outdoorings and baby dedications repeatedly and be reminded month after month and year after year the pain of their unmet desire and God’s promise. I know that there are many out there who know this couple’s pain. I personally know it. But the God of Joseph, Abraham and Sarah is a faithful and truthful God and when He promises, He delivers. When you call upon Him, He answers. This wonderful God recently honored this couple with a healthy baby at an age when childbearing is a challenge. Thus, once again, we are encouraged that God’s word upon our lives is true and will indeed become a reality. The Lord has spoken many promises upon the lives of His children. Most of these promises are general; they are for all His children and recorded in the Bible. Then there are the specific promises that God has made to individual people. When we have doubts about these promises, all we need to do is to look at the many examples we have in His word to confirm His faithfulness. When we do this, we will affirm that whatever He has said regarding us will come to pass.

The flight attendant went to ask her to go back and sit in economy class because that's where her ticket allowed her to sit, but she refused. She had paid and wanted the best seat.

Then the attendant informed the junior pilot. The junior pilot went and spoke with the lady and she still refused. Then the junior pilot went to inform the chief pilot.

The chief pilot said, "I am married to an illiterate, I'll go and talk to her."

The chief pilot went and whispered something to the woman and she peacefully stood up and went to her economy class seat. Surprised, the flight attendant and junior pilot asked the Chief pilot, "Sir, what did you tell her?"

The chief pilot said "I just told her that the people in first class are not going to Abuja."

Shortage Of Primary Care Doctors In D.C., New Report Finds

By Lena H. Sun, Published: September 25 E-mail the writer

Of the more than 8,000 physicians licensed to work in the nation’s capital, only 453 of them are primary-care doctors who spend more than 20 hours a week seeing patients, according to a report released Wednesday by the D.C. Board of Medicine.

The number of actively practicing primary-care doctors comes from a survey conducted when doctors renewed their licenses last year. It puts a number on a complaint that patients and health-care providers have long had: It’s hard to find a doctor in Washington.

Starting Oct. 1, nearly 50 million Americans who lack medical insurance will have their first chance to sign up for coverage under the new system that has come to be known as Obamacare. Individual stories will define health plan’s fate

Health-care experts have long bemoaned the looming shortage of physicians, particularly in primary care. Primary-care doctors will be especially important as a critical phase of President Obama’s health-care law gets underway Tuesday. That’s when Americans who lack medical insurance have their first chance to sign up for coverage under the new health insurance marketplaces that are supposed to open for business.

Like in the previous board report, the latest survey found that actively practicing primary-care doctors are clustered in wards 1, 2, 3 and 5, near the city’s hospitals. But many of the District’s uninsured population live in wards 4 and 7, where there are few such physicians.

“If all the physicians are located in Northwest, and only a tiny population is in Southeast or Northeast, then you’ve got access problems,” said Atul Grover, chief public policy officer for the American Association of Medical Colleges. Maps of the District show very few physician offices in wards 7 and 8.

A UN-backed special court in The Hague has rejected an appeal against war crimes convictions by lawyers representing former Liberian President Charles Taylor. It ruled that his convictions had been proved beyond doubt.

Even if uninsured residents in those wards sign up Taylor appeared impassive in court as the judge upheld his convictions and 50for new health insurance coverage, “they’re going to year sentence. have access issues even if you give them an insurance card,” Grover said. The number of actively practicing primary-care doctors refers to those who practice internal medicine, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics. But Wednesday’s figure is considerably lower than the 918 actively practicing primary-care physicians reported in 2010 by the board, when it conducted its first survey of the physician workforce in the nation’s capital.

Charles Taylor Looses Appeal October 2013

Taylor has always insisted he is innocent and his only contact with the rebels was to urge them to stop fighting.

He became the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II.

'Campaign of terror' "The appeals chamber... affirms the sentence of 50 years in prison and orders that the sentence be imposed immediately," Judge George King told the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) on Thursday.

The BBC's Chris Morris in The Hague says the court's decision has been closely watched because the guilty verdict was hailed as a landmark, proving that even people at the highest level of power can be held to account.

In its ruling, the special court said that Mr Taylor's personal conduct had a "significant effect on the commission of crimes in Sierra Leone".

It said that he unleashed a campaign of terror against the Sierra Leonean opposition "using terror as its modus operandi".

"The Appeals Chamber is of the opinion that the sentence imposed by the trial chamber is fair in the light of the totality of the crimes committed," Judge King said.

He said that Taylor's lawyers had "failed to demonstrate any errors in the trial chamber's reasoning."

Correspondents say that Taylor is now expected immediately to serve his sentence in a foreign jail. The UK has offered to accept him at a British prison - other possible destinations include Sweden or Rwanda.

Launching of Ghana Tourist Coach (GTC Radio )

October 2013

Page 25

The Ghana Tourist Coach Radio is the brainchild of Kwame Boakye -Danquah(Toziah) . He mooted the idea years ago after a personal experience years ago whilst working as an agent with an Insurance company. As he listened to people make derogatory remarks about Africa he was provoked to go online and showed some goods pictures about Ghana his home country to the people. When they saw the pictures it changed their perception of Ghana and Africa as a whole. Kwame realized people were not better informed about Ghana as such he became an ambassador educating people about the other side of Ghana. He therefore formed a group on Facebook which was the first of its kind. He got the following of personalities like Professor Kwasi Yankah. The group now has grown to about 17,000 members. It is therefore out of this that the idea of setting up a radio station that would promote Ghana and its tourism potential came into being. The station started broadcasting on the web in May 2013 and after making such a huge impact in the Washington Metro area it was finally launched on September 28, 2013 at the Days Inn in Alexandria, Virginia. People from diverse backgrounds showed up to support the launching. There were presentations by Lawyer Ishmael Thoronka (originally from Sierra Leone), Dr. Daniel Ampoma (Ghanaian Nurses Association), and Dr. Nana Osei Amoah - a medical practitioner .. Kenyan actress based in Hollywood, Lupita Nyongo will together with the director of the 12 Years a Slave Steve McQueen get an award on October 21. Ghanaian musician and social activist Rocky Dawuni joined Hillary Clinton and other dignitaries for the three-year anniversary celebration of the Global Alliance For Clean Cookstoves in New York City (NYC) late September of 2013. Clinton launched the Global Alliance at the Clinton Global Initiative under the auspices of the UN Foundation to promote the universal adoption of clean cooking solutions as a means to combat Household Air Pollution (HAP) and climate change.

He also hosted the debut Beach Ball Festival at Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica CA, where fans enjoyed performances by Michael Rose, Sly & Robbie, U-Roy and other Reggae greats.

The Beach Ball Festival was a fun new experience and a departure from closing out Levitt Pavilion MacArthur Park’s summer concert season with a sizzling headlining show earlier in August. Dawuni began the summer with a two-part European tour which stopped at the top Reggae, World and Jazz music festivals and garnered excellent reviews.

“We need to keep the Alliance going and growing,” said Secretary Clinton. “Find more partners; expand the market; put more stoves in the hands of consumers; save more lives. On the musical front, Rocky Dawuni performed at Playing for Change annual fundraiser prior to leaving for NYC alongside blues legend Keb Mo, John Densmore of The Doors and Playing for Change Band. The event held at the World Famous Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, California (CA), helps raise funds for the building of music schools around the world.

The two are expected to receive the Hollywood Breakout Director Award and New Hollywood Award, respectively at the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards.

Previous recipients of the New Hollywood Award include Robert Pattinson, Gabourey Sidibe, Jennifer Lawrence, Felicity Jones and Quvenzhane Wallis. According to the Hollywood Reporter, founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu said, “We look forward to celebrating this exceptionally talented director and actress for their outstanding work and creative vision."

The Shuga actress plays Patsey -- a slave who receives particularly unkind attention from her master (Michael Fasbender). The movie is about a true story of a free black man from the north who was deceived and sold into slavery in the south in mid-19th century America. Lupita stars in the movie alongside Hollywood bigwigs like Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard and Brad Pitt.

Book Launch Marks Rev. Alexander Adu Gyamfi’s Wonderful Legacy And Dream

An array of Ministers and Community leaders joined Rev. Alexander Adu Gyamfi to celebrate his new book. It reflects on Rev. Alexander Adu Gyamfi’s life time experiences. It was one of the most successful book launches in the community’s history. It was well attended with over Six hundred people in attendance.

Bishop Hansel Adjei Frimpong who led the launching of the book, in his sermon said, the apostle Paul tells us in the bible to study the word to empower ourselves. He urged everyone to buy the book since it was based on the word of God and life experience of the servant of God.

In his remarks, Rev. Alexander Adu Gyamfi thanked God for making this day a reality. “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.” It is the Lord’s pre-determined counsel that has made it all possible. Today marks the official beginning of a long-awaited chapter in my life and by the grace of God; I join the ranks of motivational authors as I launch the first of many books that the Lord has laid on my heart to write for the community, for the society, for humanity and for posterity. Today, I begin a series of publications intended, among other objectives, to liberate minds, uplift spirits, soothe pain, induce hope and bring relief.

This maiden book is a dream-come-true. Incidentally, the book itself is about dreams. I am not talking about the dreams people have when they sleep and see others chasing them. Rather, I am talking about the kind of dream in which you chase your destiny. I am talking about goals, aspirations and ambitions in life and how to fulfill them. That is what this book is all about. I do not know what your dream is, but for me personally, writing books has always been my ambition. However, for some reasons best known to God, I never wrote a book until now. But the good news about this pioneering effort, though a bit late in coming, is that it confirms what I share with readers in the book, and that is: You can get it if you really want it; you can do whatever you aspire to do if you try hard enough; you can fulfill your dream if you take the necessary steps towards it. You may be delayed by circumstances but you cannot be denied.

A casual glance around is enough to reveal that many have dreams that are either dying or are already dead; many people are hurting because of shattered dreams; many have no clue about what to do in the circumstances; many have already given up on hope thinking all is lost, and many people do not seem to have any dream at all. These are the issues that motivated me to seek answers and put them together in a book.

In his closing remarks, he thanked his associate pastors, Eric Forson, Richmond Ofosuhene, Edwin Osei-Tutu, George Akwada, Rev and Mrs Ampah Johnson, Bishop Kwaku Asante, Richard Amoah, Media Director Gariel Odame and the Christian Journal for their support. You can get a copy of the book at www.tcjonline.org/store

Can You Pronounce This Name?

A Hawaiian woman has been left outraged after state officials asked her to cut down her 36letter surname – because it wouldn’t fit on the ID card.

Furious Janice Lokelani Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele claims the state has been ‘disrespectful’ towards her Hawaiian heritage after being reissued an ID card with only 35 letters in her surname. Her name is so long that the driving licence in question does not even include her first name and middle names at all.

Mrs Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele, who has had to carry two ID cards for the past 20 years, said that the action of missing off one letter was ‘disrespectful of the Hawaiian people’. ‘The county has never accommodated my name on my driver’s license,’ she told Honolulu television station KHON2. She said the new ID has created a number of problems for her, including not being able to travel and being questioned by police during traffic.

’He looked at it and he goes, “Well, where is your first name?” And I said, “Don’t blame me. This is your department, this is the county”.’ Mrs Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele said that she has been told by the country to take her maiden name or shorten her last name. But she wants to keep the name as a tribute to her late husband. After the TV station that originally reported the story pressured the local Department of Transport on the issue, officials said they will extend ID cards to a 40-character limit.

Nigeria: Nollywood Stars Turned Pastors Eucharia Anunobi

In fact, Eucheria Anunobi’s conversion was the most talked about conversion to Christ in recent times. The actress who ruled the screen in the early 90s with her role in the film “Glamour Girls” has been trailed with many controversies and scandals, most of which bothered on her relationships and crashed marriage. But after many years of being in the news for the wrong reasons, Eucheria shocked her fans when she announced she had given her life to Christ. Few months after the announcement, UK was ordained at the Fresh Oil Ministry, Egbeda, Lagos, as an evangelist.

Interestingly, with her ordination which was performed by Pastor Psalm Okpe, Eucharia willed the power to preach as a pastor and she’s doing so, without looking back. Those in the know said, she already counsels youths in the church and travels at random to spread the gospel of salvation.

Although, many have criticised their decisions to embrace Christ, blaming such decisions principally on the turn of events in their lives, it is not out of place today to come across celebrities who have become preachers of the Word.

From Eucheria Anunobi to Zack Orji, Ndidi Obi, Pat Attah, Ernest Azuzu and many others, it has been a steady influx of fire-brand celebrity Pastors into the Vineyard of God. But the question on the lips of everyone is whether these celebrities have found true happiness after all, and if they do, how much has the pulpit paid off, in place of dumping their flourishing careers in acting for the work of God. Like the Biblical saying, “When we come to the Word of God and we pray over His Word, when His Word shines on us, we are exposed and emptied of any other thing.”

movies.

In 1994, her role in Glamour Girls, a very successful home video that focused on prostitution, literally changed her fortunes. The movie shot her into prominence and soon, she became a subject of many scandals and controversies, forcing her to disappear from teh scene, in order to rebrand herself. But as luck would have it, she got married to her Bishop Great Emeya husband in 2009, at the Rainbow Christian Assembly in Warri, Delta State. She has since been ordained an evangelist in the church. Presently, she runs the church with her husband. Charles Okafor

Pat Attah

Charles Okafor who staged a comeback to Nollywood recently in Uche Jombo’s film, “Misplaced” after disappearing from the radar is also one of the actors that are winning souls for Christ. He used to act alongside Saint Obi, Zack Orji and Richard Mofe Damijo and has made a name for himself before disappearing from the scene.

Pat Attah? That play boy actor who broke the hearts of many ‘Nollywood babes’ during his time, and left as soon as the ovation was loud. The once-upon-a-dreadlock-turned clean cut actor, is currently based in Hamburg, Germany where he’s winning souls for Christ. Those in the know said, he does not preach in churches, rather he is now very much a born-again.

He is said to have dedicated his time to preaching the gospel of good tidings across the nations of the world. The veteran actor has been spotted in such cities as Abuja, Nasarawa and Makurdi where he is engaged in various evangelical activities. But this, however, has not stopped him from storming the celebrity hangout, in Surulere to fraternize with his friends and colleagues in the movie industry.

Page 32

This, however, has not taken away some of the traits that made her fans term her “a bad girl” before her transformation. She is still flashy and daring. Just weeks after the ordination, Eucheria bought a brand new BMW X5. Severally, she has refuted reports that she has abandoned her acting career for the work of God. Instead, she pointed out that she would be choosier in accepting roles in movies.

Zack Orji

Ex-President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria,AGN, Zack Orji can be described as “a gentleman without blemish.” This, no doubt informed his decision to become a worker in the Vineyard of God. Zack Orji ordained a full-time evangelist by Bishop Emma Isong of Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI).

The theme for the Convention was “Building Educational Infrastructure for the youth, women’s health and nutrition in Eweland”. This theme was chosen to enable the CEANA Council deliberate on the educational and healthcare issues facing Eweland. The focus of the 2013 convention was to raise funds for the Tanyigbe School project, and awardscholarships to students in Ghana, Togo and Benin.

The convention activities started with the arrival and registration of guests on Thursday, August 29, 2013. In the morning of Friday, August 30, the CEANA Council held a meeting of delegates drawn from the 15 CEANA member Associations from cities across the United States and Canada. Mr. MacGeoffrey Kutor, the President of CEANA, and Mr. William Adzimahe, Executive Director, opened the Council meeting with a welcome message to the delegates.

The morning’s business included a review of the organization’s activities for the past year, and approval of a program and budget for the next year. Friday evening continued with a special dinner reception organized by the CEANA 2013 Organizing Committee for the leadership of CEANA. Later in the evening the teeming guests were treated to a cultural performance from the Ewe Associations of Chicago and Washington DC. The performances were led by Mr. Eseli Normanyo-Nutakor, and Torgbui Gideon Foli Amenyo III, a traditional leader and renowned professor of Ewe culture in the US.

The CEANA General Conference started on Saturday morning with an introduction of the three invited speakers, namely, Dr. Padmore Agbemabiase, a professor of English, Education, African-American and African Studies, and a renowned Ghanaian poet, playwright and scholar; Dr. Prosper Doamekpor, youth development specialist for extension programs at Tuskegee University; and Dr. Cyril G. K. Fayose, President of Evangelical Presbyterian University College (EPUC) in Ho.

In their addresses, the speakers expressed concern for the deteriorating levels of literacy, poor funding for basic education, and gender disparities in school enrolment and allocation of healthcare resources in Eweland, Dr. Doamekpor provided a compelling strategy for encouraging positive youth development in order to increase competencies needed for youth development. Dr. Agbemabiase stressed the importance of girl child education, and also recommended action for gender parity in the school districts of Eweland. Dr. Fayose outlined the pioneering role that the E.P. University College is playing in the Volta Region toward the provision of tertiary education for the youth. He appealed to competent lecturers in the Diaspora to make their skills available to the college.

The Saturday evening banquet was presided over by two of Eweland’s experienced MCs, Mr. Mawuli Agbenu of New York and Mr. Steve Dei of Chicago. The evening commenced with the arrival of dignitaries, followed by intricately adorned traditional leaders who displayed the rich Ewe culture. The chiefs were led in procession by the Volta Ensemble cultural group from Washington, D.C. in a performance that showcased the unique cultural dances of Eweland. The keynote speaker for the banquet was his Excellency the Ambassador of Ghana to the United States, Mr. Ohene Agyekum. Mr. Agyekum praised and encouraged CEANA to continue to strive to improve the lives of people back home through physical projects and other educational and social initiatives. The highlight of the evening, the annual Star Fundraiser, drew contributions and pledges from the 400 banquet attendants. The impetus for the 2013 fundraiser was the completion of a JSS classroom block that CEANA had approved the previous year.

The landmark event of the 2013 CEANA Convention was the inauguration of Dr. Peter Nat Abotchie as the first elected CEANA President with a 3-year mandate to lead the organization, under the newly amended CEANA Constitution. Dr Felix Odartey-Wellington —  He rose above his circumstances the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon. According to him, PRESEC was cool, "but strangely enough I never ended up in the sciences, for which PRESEC is renowned".

He added that he really benefited from guidance from his sisters and brother because they encouraged him to be himself and pursue an Arts programme rather than the sciences which was more encouraged at PRESEC.

He was only eight years old and in Class Two when he tragically lost his father in the heat of the 1979 military uprising in Ghana. However, growing up without a father's love and care did not deter him from achieving his dreams. With the support of his mother and other family members, he went through all the struggles to complete his primary and secondary education through to university and Law School.

"I really loved pranks and ‘jama’. Out of positive influences, I did a little athletics too because a lot of my buddies were into athletics," he said.

He would not elaborate on the “pranks" because "some of them border on juvenile delinquency", he joked.

Dr Odartey-Wellington, who had many interesting stories to share, said initially he had been interested in a military career right after Sixth Form, but, again, because of his past, that was not to be.

Today, Felix Nii Lantei Odartey-Wellington "I was regarded as a security risk," he said, is a lawyer and has also obtained a doctorlaughing. ate degree in Communications.

Recalling the past, Dr Odartey-Wellington described how he lost his father, Major General Neville Alexander OdarteyWellington, a former Army Commander of the Ghana Armed Forces, who died in action during the June 4, 1979 uprising in Ghana.

He ended up at the University of Ghana, where he majored in Political Science and Law, following which he completed his professional law training at the Ghana School of Law.

According to him, because of the tragedy surrounding his father's death, he swore to abstain from politics while at the university. In his first year, there was a demonstration in which he refused to participate.

"Though I was very young, I still vividly recall the staccato sounds of gunfire, the evacuation of my family from our Burma Camp residence and from one safe house to “But, guess what, coincidentally when the another, amidst steady rainfall and a feeling police invaded the campus, they attacked us of dread all around," he related. at Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby's pub, then called Lifeline, at the Akuafo Hall. Touching on his education, he said his mum was defiant and resilient and knew education was the only way out for him and his siblings and, therefore, did her best to ensure that they were all educated.

He disclosed that after Law School, he worked with Akufo-Addo, Prempeh and Co. But, then, he had been stung by the media bug after being part of the pioneering staff of Radio Univers in Legon.

Two Ghanaian Software Products Win 2013 World Summit Awards

"I had a scholarship offer and Mr OdoiSykes advised me that spending the few years required for the PhD was worth it," he recalled. "I was on his staff at the Ghana High Commission in Ottawa and he was my mentor and so I listened. One thing led to another and after my doctoral studies, I ended up in academia. I don’t miss mainstream politics, though, because academia is an excellent space for promoting positive change."

Dr Odartey-Wellington is currently a professor of Communications at the Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia in Canada, having previously taught at the Osgoode Hall Law School and the Ryerson University.

He is regarded as an expert in broadcasting law.

He also recently co-authored Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe's autobiography, titled ‘Never Say Die! The Autobiography of a Statesman’.

Dr Odartey-Wellington said with his background, he believes God has plans for everyone.

"Just follow your dreams and God has a way of making them come true," he added. By Hadiza Nuhhu-Billa Quansah/Junior Graphic/Ghana

Radio Univers led to career stints at Choice FM and GTV. "I loved working in the media but the media was the mistress and Law was the wife, so I decided to pursue graduate studies in Communications to regularise my media relationship," he said, laughing.

After obtaining his master’s degree in Media Studies from the Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, he credits a former Ghana High Commissioner to Canada, Mr Samuel Odoi-Sykes, for persuading him to do his doctorate degree at the Ryerson University in Toronto, instead of returning to Ghana to pursue a potential political career.

Two of Ghana’s software products have been selected as winners of the 2013 World Summit Awards, a UN-based initiative to promote the world's best e-contents. Nandi Mobile, a technology start-up, won the e-Business and Commerce category with its Infoline product, which is a mobile and web service that connects consumers and businesses in emerging markets. Mobile Technology for Community Health in Ghana (MoTeCH), a technology-driven health initiative that is part of service delivery for maternal health at antenatal care won in the e-Health and Environment category with the Mobile-Midwife application and the Nurse application. Mobile-Midwife targets pregnant women with educational and actionable messages tailored to suit their stages in pregnancy. The Nurse Application can be likened to a simplified paper register to collect clinical information. This enables easy identification of both mothers and infants and saves time collating information to generate monthly reports, alerts and reminders for clients who need care. The two winners were named among the top five e-Business and Commerce, and e-Health and Environment categories from the about 500 entries received for the competition. According to the DirectorGeneral of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (AITI-KAC E), Ms Dorothy Gordon, the Ghanaian products were truly outstanding and that their achievements needed to be celebrated. Other Ghanaian products that made it to the finals include Trokxi in the e-Cuiture and Tourism category, Yougora in e-

Inclusion and Empowerment, MyPassco in e-Learning and Education and Leti games for e-Entertainment and Games, the Street Development Project for eInclusion and Empowerment, Bedroom Diaries from Viasat 1 for Media and Journalism. The Business Director of Nandimobile, Mr Edward Amartey-Tagoe, told the Daily Graphic that they felt honoured to be internationally recognised by a UN body such as the WSA and would encourage them to do more. He said their first product, Gripeline, received international recognition in 2011 and now their second. Infoline had been highlighted as one of the best globally. The District Director of Health Services at Awutu Senya, Ms Patricia Antwi, said through the MoteCH, nurses were able to file monthly reports with ease, as they recorded clients data onto a mobile phone and monthly report was generated for them. “Generating reports is time consuming but with MoteCH we are able to generate reports in seconds. It also gives information on all mothers who have defaulted in antenatal care and husbands of pregnant women are also involved during the entire pregnancy period", she said. Also with the MoteCH, health personnel were able to send messages in the local language of the people, she added.

I Saw Whitney Houston, Gadhafi In Hell And They Gave Me Messages”- Woman Narrates Her 2nd Visit To Hell

October 2013

come to their right Father(hotels, bars etc.), anything sinful in the world that you build (when you die, you leave these things on earth). People will be there doing all sorts of evil things, as far as people are enjoying these places, or practising all sorts of evil things, in the place that doesn’t glorify Jesus Christ, the demons will increase the pain on you in hell.

So he said, “Please so that the pain will decrease, I know if people will worship in my mosque, if they will call Jesus there, maybe the pain will decrease”

And Jesus said, “It is too late”.

I saw another president (Former president of Guinea).

I read this interesting revelation by a woman named Sister Linda. It is actually the 2nd part of her visit to hell and she names those she saw there with messages they sent her back to earth with. The likes of Whitney Houston and co..Just read and ……

Jesus went with me to hell this time, when I was with Jesus, the brightness of Jesus; Jesus have light all over His body, when we entered that dark place, I was seeing, I could see, this time, the people in hell because of the bright light on Jesus (Jesus is walking with a bright light, a glorious light).

And then, Jesus opened my eyes to see some of these men and women in hell. Jesus gave me message to Sierra Leone, He said if I should have come in December to January only five people in Sierra Leone would have raptured five only. That includes the three righteous pastors and five other people in and out of the church, when I said this in Sierra Leone, people said it is lie.

Jesus said Sierra Leone is polluted; that the shepherds he gave the word to preach to His people in Sierra Leone are dying to meet God, but majority are in hell. So Jesus sent me to Sierra Leone

When we were in hell, Jesus showed me a glass-like aquarium with people inside it, the souls of human who are still on earth are in that glass inside hell. These are people on earth who are working for demons, we have some people on earth who don’t believe anything, they are on their own, doing all sorts of bad things, even pastors who knows the truth but are bowing down to Satan, they are partakers of Satan’s communion, their souls are in that place. Gadhafi in Hell

And Jesus pulled out a man from the fire and he introduced himself to me, he said, “I am Gadhafi” (because you won’t recognize him because the fire has destroyed him, he said, “I am Gadhafi, former Libya president” Gadhafi said, “Tell my Libya people to worship Jesus” he said, “Tell my people to believe in Jesus”, he said, “Ah Jesus, have mercy, I never knew you are the right way, have mercy on me”.

He said, even the people who killed him on earth, he doesn’t want them to come to hell, he said “Tell my people to believe that Jesus is the right way”

He also gave me another message (why he gave me this message is because, he said, the entire mosque he built on earth should be destroyed and turned into churches so that people will glorify Jesus and maybe the punishment on him in hell will decrease. Because anything here on earth that you build that does not glorify Jesus Christ, that does not glorify God, that does not make people to

While Jesus showed me these presidents is because He gave me message for Sierra Leone president. But when I met my Sierra Leone president, he loves God. He obeyed the message; I thank God for his life, because men of God were saying all sorts of things, but the president obeyed the message of God.

President Lasana Conte, former president of Guinea, he said, “Tell my people in Guinea, let them Jesus over Guinea, and let them turn to Jesus because Jesus is the only way.”

He said where he is, he doesn’t want anyone to be there, he said tell my people to believe and trust in Jesus, he said, he built a cult that he was sponsoring and he was also in the cult. He said, he wants the people to destroy that cult, let them come to Jesus.

And one famous Lawyer that died: Usher Williams, he was the deputy speaker of House of Parliament in Sierra Leone House of Parliament. He was in one cult, they call the cult in Sierra Leone “Louch” and he was in devil business, ordaining devils. He said I should tell his “Louch” brothers that they are heading to hell, all his cult brothers that died before him, he saw them in hell, he said “Please destroy louch, destroy these devils” he said, “turn to Jesus, He is the only way, hell is real”.

And then, I saw one prophet: Prophet Mani, he was the owner of the Burning Bush, that man said he would die but that he would also rise up after three days. And when he died, they took his body to the mortuary, his congregation said that they should not bury him, after three days he did not rise again, he was there for one month until the mortuary people said they should come and take their corpse away.

I saw this man in hell; he said “tell the people that I did miracles and signs and wonders with communions, these communions, those anointing oil, I ordained them and dedicate them to the demons” he said, tell them to go to a church where they can be delivered or else if they die they will go to hell because I ordained them for Satan; Satan was the one giving me all these powers.”“And tell them to destroy my church because the foundation is from Satan, everything up to the roof is from Satan”.

I saw one woman- a musician I liked so much- I always listened to her music when I was in the world:Whitney Houston: she said, “tell my mother to take my only daughter to church, that all the finances I left behind should be used to support God’s work. Let them support Jesus’ ministry, let them support holiness ministries, let them support God’s work. Let them support Christians- the right Christians. She said she wants her child to grow in Christ and know Jesus.

Page

37

“Please tell my mother; Jesus please have mercy, let me go back to the world and tell people that you are real, let me tell these musicians” And Jesus said, “It’s too late”.

I saw my biological parents in hell; my mother, my father and even my grandmother that just died this January ( I don’t like talking about them) – sobs – it’s very painful, it’s only the grace of God, I don’t like talking about hell, some times when I am asked to come and give testimony, I don’t like to, because I know I will reach this part. And one day, Jesus said, if I stopped preaching His word, He will destroy me.

So I always pray to Jesus, whenever I stand to give this testimony, to give me the boldness and strength, because any time I think of my parents, I loved my mother so much but she didn’t know Jesus. She was crying; she said, “Please I miss you guys, tell your sister to follow Jesus, I don’t want you people tom come here”

Please mother , don’t leave your children behind, you know the truth right now, take your children along.

I didn’t recognize my mother anymore. I don’t want to go to hell (I love my mother so much, I use to say anywhere my mother is, I want to go, when Jesus showed me my mother- I don’t want to go to hell, I don’t want to be with here there. Don’t go to hell, hell is not a place for people like us.

And God showed me a young boy, about five or six years old, because of witchcraft, God say I will judge all men.

When Pastor Ken Paul said a child can go to hell, I argued in my mind that God would not do something like that, but God showed me this boy, a small boy, because of witchcraft. Satan is wicked, now if you go to crusades in Sierra Leone and they say witches should come out, you will see smallsmall children When you are coming for a program like this, don’t leave your children behind; come with them so that Jesus will deliver them. If you leave them and they die, they will go to hell, no matter how small they are; as long as they have sense and know what is bad and good.

I saw another woman who was in Thailand when she died, she was a believer in Jesus married to a Muslim, then backslide. She said I should tell her daughters, “I loved their father so much and trusted him, not knowing that this man was in occultism”, he sacrificed his wife She said, tell them to go out and stand firm in the church, in Jesus who is the only way She gave the man’s name and address. When we return back from Nigeria, we will try and go and do a tour.

Thew achievement and how it's been received underscores the weight of the Miss Ghana brand, as the most prestigious in Ghana. Shooter made it to the final five after an initial ten, and was eventually crowned 2nd Runner Up.

Megan Young of the Philippines was winner, while France came second. This year's event was hosted by UK top media personality Myleene Klass, and former Mr World Kamal Ibrahim.

Carranzer Naa Okailey Shooter Carranzar was born in the suburbs of Accra and has lived in the capital all her life.
