Old boys of Mfantsipim Secondary School in the US — MOBA-USA — Honor Two Centenarians

Mr. Bartels’ presentation which occurred in the lobby of his apartment, took place in Rockville Maryland near his home in the presence of a small but energized old students from the 50s through 80s.

Excited by the presentation and obviously pleasantly surprised by it as well, Mr. Bartels proved he still had his MOBA fire burning when after the short but colorful event he proceeded to the elevator, this time using a walker — abandoning his wheelchair and opting to enter the elevator that way — amazing the middle-aged gentlemen who had come to honor him!

In Missouri meanwhile, Prof. Albion Mends Jr. said in praise of his father: “to live to a 100 years is truly a blessing from God! We are honored that you were there to mark this historic day with our family. Dada’s life is a testimony to God’s power and longevity’s secrets in serving Him”

The Professor concluded, “it is our hope that through this event you will also find opportunities and ways to celebrate your own family, faith, love, and legacy. We treasure time on earth, but let’s know that whether our days may be plentiful or short, we must spend them wisely in love. We rejoice for this 100th year of celebration.”

In an interview with TheAfricanDream.net, President Pratt Abrokwa said “we can’t tell the world how humbled and deeply privileged we are to have been part of this day. To be able to honor these centenarians is simply amazing and such a blessing. We hope their respective stories serve as an inspiration to all MOBA alums worldwide. We at MOBA-USA will continue to play our role in lifting the image of the school in Ghana.”

Mfantsipim is a Methodist educational institution in Cape Coast, Ghana, with origins as the first ever secondary school to established in the then Gold Coast, now Ghana. The school nicknamed Kwabotwe was established April 3, 1876. To find out more about MOBA-USA and their upcoming activities visit www.mobausa.org.

Written by Oral Ofori

In Mfantsipim Old Boys Association of the United States (MOBA-USA), there is an old adage that says “leave no man behind”, it is based on that adage that MOBA-USA recently honored two of their oldest old boys in the US who turned 100 years respectively.

These old MOBA-USA boys are Mr. Albion Mends Sr. of MOBA ’38 who resides in Warrensburg, Missouri and recently turned 100 on August 18, 2018, and his classmate Mr. Charles H. Bartels of MOBA ’38 who is a resident of Rockville in Maryland (MD) who turned 100 on October 14, 2018.

Mr. Bartels despite his age was still earlier in the year able to attend the MOBA-USA annual dinner-dance fundraiser of May 2018 in MD.

Both MOBA centenarians were honored with specially made ceremonial plaques that read: “You are truly blessed. You have lived 100 wonderful years, 80 of those as a proud MOBA! You are an inspiration to all of us! Happy Birthday!! From MOBA-USA.”

Dr. Nana Gaisee and Mr. Edo Sam presented Mr. Albion Mends Sr. his plaque on behalf of MOBA-USA whiles Prof. Robert Yaasi (MOBA ’55) who chaired the maiden edition of MOBA-USA fund-raiser dinner in May 2017, Mr. Carl Bartels, and MOBA-USA President Pratt Abrokwa presented Mr. Bartels’ Plaque. Both presentations were made during the August and of October 2018.

Gloria Nansubuga, a 17-year-old Ugandan, has won a World Title at World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, making her the third highest-ranked Woman Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation master. Another Katwe-born chess master has made her mark. Gloria Nansubuga started playing chess at the tender age of 4, under the guidance of her personal coach and school chess teacher, Richard Kakande.

The 43rd FIDE World Chess Olympiad took place from 24 September to 5 October 2018 in Batumi, Georgia. The biennial tournament is an 11-round Swiss open featuring 185 teams from 183 countries, with 919 players in total. The women’s section features 151 teams from 149 countries, with 749 players, including almost all of the women’s world chess elite.

FIDE has four levels of mastery: Grandmaster (GM) 2500+, International master (IM) 2400+, FIDE master (FM) 2300+, Candidate master (CM) 2200+.

The women-specific titles in descending order are: Woman grandmaster (WGM) 2300+, Woman international master (WIM) 2200+, Woman FIDE master (WFM) 2100+, Woman candidate master (WCM) 2000+. Nansubuga bypassed Woman candidate master (WCM) to become Woman FIDE master (WFM), becoming the first Ugandan to make such a leap in the tournament. So far the teenager has impressive rankings:

= In Uganda, as a 13-year-old, she dominated as the top Under 14 player and 6th overall of the total female chess players, who total up to 42 (30 of them in active chess)

= Among the Under 14 girls on the continent she ranked 4th out of 25 active players and 142nd out of 2 649 total chess female players (1 743 are active) in Africa

= Worldwide Nansubuga was then ranked at 6 205 out of the total 168 055 female chess players (of which 90 059 are active at the moment) by FIDE

Interestingly, Gloria’s character in the highly acclaimed 2016 film Queen of Katwe was Phiona Mutesi’s underling. Now, in real life, she is emerging as a player to be reckoned with in her own right. She has a way to go to attain Mutesi’s grandmaster status, but she is surely on her way.

and even cause our demise. At such times, we should recall that because we have clearly and consciously chosen to serve God, though we have been promised righteousness, peace and joy (Romans 14:17) and all that God has to offer to us here and beyond, we have nevertheless enlisted ourselves in an army, and there are ongoing battles and wars in which we partake on the spiritual level which can obviously result in injuries and casualties. We must acknowledge and accept this, for it is a spiritual truth from which we cannot escape. Take for instance the story of Queen Esther. In The Book of Esther, the queen’s cousin Mordecai was personally being pursued by his enemy Haman, because the proud Haman was angry that Mordecai wouldn’t bow down to Dr. Miriam C. Will that be the way they will cause you to become discouraged and stop doing what you have been doing for God? Are you going to stop leading the praise and worship team or quit the choir? Are you going to step down from that post to which you were elected or appointed on your job or at church? Are you going to stop attending church service or quit the church altogether? What is going to be your response to the attacks and machinations made against you? Are you going to accuse the Lord of being unfaithful to you because the loss of a good job and good health are now your woes or are you going to stand firm and fight these battles knowing who you are in God and acknowledging the manipulations of the enemy? Finally, let’s consider another individual who was perfect in every way even according to God Himself, but was faced with unbelievable tragedy, simply because of another’s resentment. In the Book of Job, Job of Uz, the greatest man of the East in those times, was blessed beyond measure, because he was upright and faithful to God. But of course, Satan himself could not leave that alone. He was jealous, because while he was homeless roaming back and forth on Earth, Job had real estate properties, innumerable livestock and blessed with ten children. Job also had the respect of his community. Consequently, Satan challenges God that Job is only faithful because of the blessings that God has granted him, not because he loves God. God allows Satan, Job’s enemy, to have his way with his wealth and all his blessings. He does and Job loses everything, even his children in one day. But Job only prostrated himself and worshiped God, accepting God’s supremacy. Dissatisfied with Job’s response, Satan goes back to God and asks to attack Job’s health. God grants the permission, trusting that Job will never cease to love and worship Him. Job’s body is attacked with painful boils from his head to the soles of his feet, but he remained faithful in his worship and never cursed God. In the end, the Lord rewarded Job for his faithfulness by not only healing his body, but by also blessing him with twice as much as he had before. Additionally, God blessed him with ten more children, the very number of children he had previously, and lastly, he was blessed with long life, where he lived until 140yrs. Was the attack on Job personal? No doubt. Was it intended to undermine and discredit him? Absolutely. Did Job stop worshiping God and did he curse Him? No. While Job was not privy to what had transpired between God and Satan, Job knew his God and understood that both blessings and curses can come from His hands. Believing that he had been faithful to God, that he had not brought those curses unto himself, he stayed true to his Lord. What is your response when such things happen to you? What challenge or trial are you facing? Have you determined its roots? Was it brought about by your disobedience to God or can you identify it as a personal attack to test you? What are you doing about it? What will you do about it? Are you going to fight by praying and fasting as Esther, Mordecai and the Hebrews did in order to claim your victory over the situation? Are you going to obey your God and continue to pray and call upon his name as did Daniel? Or are you going to continue to worship and continue your faithful relationship with Him as did Job, knowing that your God is faithful and supreme and that despite your afflictions, He is worthy to be worshiped and praised? When such attacks come, know that they are personal, but know even more that this is when it is time to fight and shame your enemies and claim what is yours. Don’t allow the jealous ones to triumph over you. Don’t let Satan and his demonic and human agents to harass and have their way with you. There is something special about you that they desire. There is something wonderful about you that they want to destroy. Are you going to let them? Fight them all the way until it is over, knowing that God fights alongside you.

TheAfricanDream Show Produced by Oral Ofori on Fairfax Public Access Passes 50th Episode

#TheAfricanDream show produced and hosted by Oral Ofori and friends for television at Fairfax Public Access (FPA) in Virginia (VA), United States (US), has passed its 50th episode as at October 2018.

The show started airing on Wallingford Public Access (WPAA) in Wallingford, Connecticut in the US, where it became an award-winning show in 2014. It was awarded in the category of Diversity Empowerment at 16th edition of the ACM-NE Region Video Festival in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Since August 2014, over 51 episodes of #TheAfricanDream has been produced and aired on WRLD channel 30 of FPA where it is broadcast 3 times a week to both a local US audience and international audiences.

“It was such a pleasure working with and for you Susan Adele Huizenga, my experiences at WPAA in Wallingford, Connecticut (and serving briefly on the board) sure did build a firm foundation for my adventure into TV production,” said the show’s host as he announced this milestone on his LinkedIn page.

Susan Adele Huizenga is the Executive Director at WPAA and Community Media Center where Mr. Ofori was a Producer and Board Member until he relocated to the Washington, DC, Metro area to grow his network.

Describing what was peculiar about the show, Mr. Ofori said “the hashtag symbol is actually part of the show’s name, hence #TheAfricanDream and this is because our guests sometimes are random people with amazing stories to share that we ran into online.” “Another cool thing is that the Director of

Programming at FPA — Maryam Sha — lets us have free reign to create and that really helped #TheAfricanDream tell authentic stories. Over the years we have tried to tell stories about Africans and by Africans for both Africans and non-Africans alike on a limited budget.”

When asked what the future of the show was, Mr. Ofori responded: “TV production sure is great, I enjoy it a lot, but after over half a decade of bearing the majority of the cost involved, it sure does become expensive. Ghanaian Woman Killed After Car Strikes Deer In Rockland County

14

Spring Valley N.Y. A woman was killed after the car she was travelling in struck a deer in Rockland County. Her husband, who was behind the wheel, was injured in the collision. The car they were in was flipped over and mangled after New York State Police say it struck a deer on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Clarkstown. The car then veered onto the grass median, where it struck several trees. The passenger, 50-yearold Miriam Kofi of Spring Valley, was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. “It’s very sudden, we are all very devastated,” family friend Yaw Adusei said. “It’s like a shock to us to find out she couldn’t make it.”

The driver was Miriam’s husband of three decades, 68-year-old Thomas Kofi, who friends say remains stable at Westchester Medical Center. “He doesn’t remember anything, I think he was unconscious at the time,” Adusei said. “We are all praying he comes out successfully, he’s going to be okay.”

Friends say the couple was headed to Costco to run errands when tragedy struck. “Very beautiful family, she has a daughter and a 14-year-old son,” Adusei said. Miriam worked at a hotel in Manhattan, according to friends, and Thomas is a former limo driver who had been out of work due to other injuries. The crash comes at the height of deer mating season, when authorities say there’s an increase in deer darting into the road.

AAA says there were 127 crashes involving deer in Rockland County last year, but this may be the first they’ve heard of resulting in a fatality. Thursday’s crash also happened at dusk, when AAA says most crashes involving deer occur. Miriam was a devout Christian, which gives them strength they’ll need to mourn her loss. Officials suggest you drive slowly, to allow as much time as possible to react. Source:http://tcjonline.org

Meet Alexander Amosu, The Nigerian Man Who Designed World’s Most Expensive Suit

It’s a rather curious move for one to be opening shop and not be intending to sell. But that is basically what Mr. Alexander Amosu, erudite businessman and designer of some of the world’s most expensive luxury products is about doing. He is launching the Alexander Amosu line of luxury products in Nigeria without the primary intention of selling them or making profit.

What type of profit could he really make in Nigeria after designing the world’s most expensive suit and blackberry which are worth 70, 000 pounds and 140, 000 pounds respectively and getting listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records? Yes, what kind of profit could he really make in a country where the Naira equivalents of the mentioned products (approximately N36, 500 000 for the suit and N60, 000 000, respectively)? What is the rationale behind such a move when he can boast of clients among the richest and most glamorous people in the world?

Nigerians are doing successful things all over the world and we have to start coming back home. I am hoping that if I am here, people would say that if Alexander Amosu can be there, then I too can be there. Why would Nigeria not be like or even better than London?” he asks. We need to come back and build our own country and the way to start is by each of us coming back and saying that this is what I have done.” Then picking up the thread of the suit again, he adds: “I don’t need to sell my suit here. People are buying my stuff all over the world and I don’t need to sell it here. Moreover there are just four of them in the world and I just want to bring it to Nigeria and show my people that this is what I have done.”

But there are so many other things in his line of luxury products. The bespoke world’s most expensive suit is just one of them. The suits start from 3, 500 pounds and there are a range of other luxury products including belts, ties, shirts, cufflinks and so on. But what makes this one suit so special that it has to sell for that price? “The suit is made Alexander is coming home. In case you haven’t noticed, his with gold and platinum thread. Ghanaian Man Stabs 19-Year Old Brother To Death During Fight Inside Their Home

15

A Ghanaian man stabbed his 19-year-old brother to death during a fight inside their home, police said. Michael Darko, 28, allegedly knifed his brother Matthew Darko in the back during a one-on-one confrontation inside their apartment on Franklin Ave. near E. 168th St. in Claremont Village about 7:45 p.m. Friday October 19, cops said.

The victim was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital and died there later that day.

Michael Darko was arrested for murder and weapon possession. He has no prior arrests, police said. He was ordered held without bail when he was arraigned Friday in Bronx Criminal Court.

The siblings’ family was holed up in their apartment Monday and wouldn’t comment. Neighbors said the dad lives in Ghana and that the mother goes for dialysis treatments and needs a wheelchair to get around.

Three times a week, they said, Michael would carry her down the stairs from her fifth-floor walkup so she could go for her treatment. One neighbor, Michelle Holmes, 51, found out about the murder from the Citizen app.

“They were siblings,” she said. “They fought as siblings. But this … I’m really suprised and I’m sad.” She also said the suspect took care of the family, but another neighbor, Dani Agyepong, 70, said Michael Darko appeared to have psychiatric problems.

“He never got any help,” Agyepong said. “If you had a conversation with him you could tell.” He would talk, Agyepong added, “and it wouldn’t make any sense.” Matthew Adu Darko funeral is scheduled for November 16, 2018.

Kagame Highlights Reform 'urgency' US-Based Ghanaian Arrested for $5m Romance Fraud At AU Summit Afrikan

expenses, such as legal fees, customs, storage, farm-related expenses and ransom. “Parker” promised he would pay the victim back with money or gold. This victim had a total loss of approximately $800,000. Of that amount, the indictment says, the victim sent approximately $220,700 to accounts controlled by Asomani.

Africa Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat (2ndL front row) poses for a family photo with Africa's Presidents (fromL) Sudan's Omar al-Bashir, Rwanda's Paul Kagame, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahamed and Chad's Idris Deby, on the sidelines of an AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. (AFP)

Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Saturday November 17 urged African heads of state to come to an agreement on long-debated reforms to their continental body at a special summit in the Ethiopian capital.

Heads of state and ministers from the 55 African Union member states were gathered at the body's headquarters for what is seen as a last-ditch attempt to push through reforms that have been mulled for nearly two years.

Declaring "the end is in sight" the AU chairperson Kagame highlighted the urgency of reforming an organisation often seen as toothless and donordependent.

"Events on our continent and across the world continue to confirm the necessity and urgency of this project," he said at the summit's opening in the Ethiopian capital.

"The goal is simple: to make Africa stronger and give our people the future they deserve," said Kagame, whose one-year term as chairperson expires in January.

The AU in 2016 put Kagame in charge of the reform project, and observers say time is running out as Egypt - which is set to assume the chairmanship - has little interest in carrying it forward.

In proposals unveiled last year, Kagame envisioned a more narrowly focused AU headed by a powerful commission whose bills are covered by member states rather than foreign donors.

However key African countries hold reservations about empowering a continental body they believe could infringe on their sovereignty.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an AU official

downplayed Egypt's opposition and told AFP to expect an agreement on reforms to the body's administration and financing when the summit concludes on Sunday.

"I think we have 100% consensus on this," the official said.

However the reforms the official described fell short of Kagame's initial proposals.

While the Rwandan leader proposed that member states elect a chairperson who could then appoint his or her own deputy and commissioners, AU leaders rejected that proposal, the official said.

Kagame had also floated reducing the AU's scope to focus on four areas: peace and security, economic integration, political affairs and Africa's global representations.

But the AU will instead reduce its eight commissions to six by merging four commissions that were seen as redundant, specifically political affairs with peace and security, and trade and industry with economic affairs.

Meanwhile 24 countries have made progress on implementing a 0.2% import levy to finance the union, the official said, despite opposition from the United States which argues it violates World Trade Organisation rules.

"We've had a lot of challenges with the US on this for frankly no good reason and we've chosen to ignore them, which they don't like," the official said.

Women called to strive and achieve Higher Heights in the Lord

Bronx, New York – Abundant Life Baptist Church in the Bronx celebrated its annual Women’s Week. The guest speaker, Mrs. Juliana Adu-Gyamfi, First Lady of the Ghana Baptist Convention, called on Women to strive and achieve higher heights in the Lord. She said, “when we talk about higher heights in the Lord, we are talking about maturity in Christ, and you and I know that as Christians we are not there yet.”Speaking from Philippians 3:12 in the Bible, “Paul said, Not that I have attained of which I have to get in Christ, But I press on for the upward call so that I can get hold of that which Christ Jesus has laid hold for me.”When we talk about presenting ourselves mature before Christ, we are talking about growth. We want to grow in our Christian walk again, grow in the demonstration on God’s route and our Christian service and loyalty to God. She stressed that as women they should not let their emotions overcome their maturity in Christ so that when offended they can just let go. As women, we tend to get hurt easily at church and pick up grudges which sometimes leads us not to attend church. She pleaded with them that attaining maturity in Christ is a personal responsibility as a Christian. She charged them to strive to achieve higher heights or maturity in Christ. We must pursue our goal of an upward call so we can achieve maturity. She said Paul was accessing his walk with the Lord, knew he was far away from attaining the height he wanted to reach in the Lord. “Because I have not yet arrived at my goal, I strain myself to achieve maturity in Christ so I can get into Heaven.” Even Paul who did a lot for Christianity at some point realizes he has not achieved his goal. She told the congregation they should accept the fact that they are still growing in the Lord. As we are gathered here today clad in our ministry cloth, and it is everyone’s responsibility to

26

strive to make it to heaven. As Christians, we will fail at times in our Christian lives, but that should not be an excuse not to press on. “The mark of attaining spiritual maturity in Christ requires continues self-assessment of your growth and service to God. The questions we should ask ourselves every day how far have I gone with my assignment” We should ask ourselves what else can I do for the Lord? Many of us women are equipped to give up our God-given assignment, and we refrain from trying harder with excuses. Attaining spiritual maturity in the Lord requires that you and I accept the fact that we are not there yet.

There is still room for growth and improvement in our Christian living and service in the Lord.We should forget the past if we must attain higher heights.”Paul said one thing I do is to forget the past, attaining higher height in Christ requires that we forget both past achievements, trials, and sufferings. One thing I do, I forget what lies behind”. As you strive to attain the price of your upward call, there will always be obstacles of pain, hurt, disappointment and many more. We must go through trial and persecutions for Christ. But when they do come you have a responsibility to let go behind”. Paul encourages us to have an attitude of excellence, perseverance, endurance and not comparing ourselves with others. As women, we should recognize ourselves as a unique vessel in the hands of the Lord. We have been called in heavenly position in destiny. In conclusion, she told them to remember what Paul said and should strive to attain higher height and maturity in the Lord. https://howafrica.com

The Ambassador was accompanied by Chairperson of NPP-USA, Obaa Yaa Frimpong and his personal assistant, Kofi Tonto.

Seated to the Right, Ambassador Dr. Barfour Adjei Barwuah and Dr. Andrea Luxton, of Andrews University Ghana's Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Dr. Barfour Adjei-Barwuah, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Andrews University to grant partial scholarship to Ghanaian students and professionals, both home and abroad.

In his address to the executive leadership of the university, Dr. Adjei-Barwauh, visibly excited, reiterated the importance of the agreement; "this is a five year program so it is something that is going to benefit our people for a while. At a time where the world is moving fast, this kind of relationship is important for our development."

Touching on the details of the partnership, he intimated, "we have secured 250 seats per year for Ghanaian students and professionals-200 seats for undergraduate students and 50 seats for graduate students. This means that, we can enroll up to 1250 students during the lifetime of the agreement. The program gives students and professionals who will be pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees, 50% off their tuition cost. The partnership also extends to students and professionals who prefer to stay home and pursue their degree programs online."

According to data from the university, most undergraduate students enrolled pay about $28,272 per year. At 50%, each student will get $14,136 off per year totaling $56,544 of savings for 4 years. A discount of $56,544 for 200 students per year for five years comes to $56.5 million of scholarship accessible to Ghanaian first degree students. The discount total, accessible to graduate students is about $5.5 million at 50 students for five years. Essentially, this agreement means that Ghanaians have close to $62 million worth of scholarship they can access under this program.

President of Andrews University, Dr. Andrea Luxton, stressed the school's commitment to education and the motive for investing in Ghanaians. "As an Adventist institution, we believe in giving back by way of empowerment, through education. Our relationship with Ghana goes back many years. This partnership solidifies that relationship even more", he revealed.

Speaking at the signing-in event, Mr. Kwame Antwi-Frempong, the deal broker and CEO of Aspire Business Network, assured the university of his commitment to safeguard the program and to ensure that all applicants are properly pre-screened. "Both parties have agreed for Aspire's continuous involvement in the program. They want to make sure students are rigorously screened. This will ensure that students who go through the program are legitimate and academically ready. The sustainability of this program is very important. It's going to give Ghanaians access to over $60 million so we will do everything to protect the integrity of the program and by extension, the Embassy and Andrews University", he emphasised.

Mr Antwi-Frempong, further, commended Ambassador Adjei-Barwuah for the exemplary leadership he exhibited throughout the process, and thanked his personal assistant, Kofi Tonto, for working closely with the negotiation team.

As part of the visit, the ambassador met and held talks with the Dean of Nursing school, after a tour of the Aviation school. Discussions are ongoing to partner with these two schools in the near future.

As part of the deal, they also visited the School of Aviation. Discussions are underway to give Ghanaian students the opportunity to study aviation mechanics and to become pilots.

Israel Approaches Ghana To Back Its Bid For A Seat At The African Union

29

sees as a disadvantage since they will need the support of the giant bloc of 54 African countries to push through their expansion agenda into Palestinian territories.

The Ghanaian minister assured Israel of Ghana’s support and “pledged to work hard to ensure that Israel gets her voice heard on the African continent.”

Meanwhile, Israel is keen on kicking out African asylum seekers after unsuccessful threats of illegal deportation of the about 40,000 people, imprisonment and even suspension of a relocation deal by the U.N. refugee agency to send them to Western countries.

The country later introduced a new law in August 2018 which allows the withholding of 20 per cent of salaries of African asylum seekers which can only be reclaimed after they leave the country.

Assin South, South MP, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, has called on Ghanaians to stand in solidarity with the people of Israel, whom, he said, have become a constant target of terrorist attacks by Hamas, a terrorist group based in Palestine.

In a commemorative statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, 18 July, in solidarity with the State of Israel on the occasion of the country’s 70th anniversary, the Ghanaian lawmaker stated that: “A total of 302 rockets and mortars had been fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip within the spate of three months – between 29 May and 17 July, this year”.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour, who is also a member of the Foreign Affairs committee of Parliament, appealed to the international community, particularly the UN, AU and Ghana, to rise in solidarity with Israel and insist that the good people of Israel have an inalienable right to exist and to live in peace and harmony.

He also used the occasion to extol Israel’s economic prowess, high technological advancement and agriculture exploits. Aside from the U.S. and China, Israel, he said, has the most companies listed on the tech-focused NASDAQ stock exchange. He, thus, challenged Ghana to learn from the Israeli model, adding that Israel also provides home to some of the most prestigious and sacred Jewish, Christian and Islamic heritage in the world.

by Netanyahu during visits to Liberia to attend the ECOWAS Heads of State Summit in 2017 and then to Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda.

The so-called “deposit law” requires employers of migrants to give the state 20 per cent of their salaries and to store an additional 16 per cent toward a pension fund which will equally be inaccessible until the migrants decide to leave the country.

“Israel should once again be an observer state of the African Union … I fervently believe that it’s in your interest too, in the interest of Africa. And I hope all of you will support that goal,” Netanyahu told West African leaders in Monrovia last year.

Worse, employers of migrants have also been directed to pay an additional tax to discourage them from employing the asylum seekers who are already grappling with finding jobs.

“I ask for your support in rejecting anti-Israel bias at the United Nations, and in bodies such as the General Assembly, UNESCO and the Human Rights Council,” he appealed while adding that, “Israel is a nation that loves and respects all … In Israel, Jews, Christians and Muslims live side by side as equal citizens. This is the real Israel.”.

Currently, 27,500 Eritreans and 7,800 Sudanese are seeking asylum status to start a living in Israel. The African Union is yet to take action on the fate of these Africans who are in distress.

Israel strongly believes its absence in the African Union has affected the country in terms of votes in international forums as a result of the country’s voice not being heard.

Rival state, Palestine, was granted an observer status in the African Union in 2013 and its leader Mahmoud Abbas has addressed the Union on a number of occasions. A move Israel

Since 2009, only eight Eritreans and two Sudanese have been recognized as refugees in Israel. Another 200 Sudanese from Darfur were recently granted humanitarian status.

A decision could be made on Israel’s bid for an observer status in the African Union during the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly which will be held on February 10 and 11, 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The cleric-politician, who describes himself as a friend of Israel, expressed optimism that with the intervention of all relevant stakeholders, the Israel-Palestinian conflict will see a lasting solution.

Earlier before, Israel has called on the Ghanaian government to back its bid for an observer status in the African Union (AU), which it lost in 2002 when the former Organisation of African Union (OAU) was dissolved and replaced by the AU.

The request was made to Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who is in Jerusalem on an official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to Avraham Neguise, an Ethiopian Jew and Chairman of the Likud coalition party in the Israeli Knesset who met with the delegation, Africa and Israel have a relationship that dates back to thousands of years and it is time to come together, reports local Ghanaian media 3News.

He also added that the re-admission of Israel to the AU as an observer Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and the Ghanaian delegation in talks with Mr. Avraham Neguise and his Israeli side — 3News will help attract Israeli investment to Africa. A similar call was made

In Black history, slavery is by far the most researched, discussed and read topic. Day in and out, there are more and more stories revealing how enslaved Africans were forcefully taken from their homes and thrown on ships only to be sold into slavery that lasted for well over 400 years.

In many African traditional cultures, it is believed that an African never strays too far from home and that he or she will surely find his or her way back either in the world of the living or the dead. It is the reason why the rites of passage are taken very seriously in the African traditional setting and why during the slave trade, many traditional ceremonies were held to bid farewell to the captured Africans and to give them strength until they make it back home again. Many of the Western slave traders respected African kings and their families and always made sure not to sell any royal off, however, a few royals someway somehow found themselves being sold off into slavery. Here are 6 Africans who experienced the luxuries of life in Africa but were suddenly stripped of their birth rites and had to work on plantations as slaves.

Prince Abdulrahman Ibrahim Ibn Sori – Guniea Abdulrahman Ibrahim Ibn Sori was born in 1762 Princess Anta was born in 1793 in the powerful Wolof Kingdom in in Timbo, modern-day Guinea, of noble blood modern day Senegal, West Africa. She lived a royal life and had more specifically, of the Torodbe Fulani Muslim guards and servants that followed her to protect her from the many tribe and also held the title of commander. He was in charge of a 2000young girls who could have been her servants from the Wolof man army. During one of their military operations, Kingdom, popularly known as Jolof Kingdom of Ancient Senegal. he was captured and enslaved, eventually being Anta was only 13 years old at the time of her capture, and it is very sold to the British. The British subsequently sold unlikely that the raiders were aware of her social status. She was him to Thomas Foster, a slave master located in taken away to Goree Island along with other slaves and kept hostage Natchez, Mississippi. Sori was enslaved and until slave merchants purchased her after being displayed at the slave owned by Foster for 40 years. In 1826, Sori sent a market. Princess Anta was sold to Zephaniah Kingsley, a wealthy letter to his family members in Africa. The letter plantation owner, businessman and slave ship captain from Florida. was intercepted by a Dutch newspaper printer The two got married and she became a rich plantation owner in named Andrew Marschalk. The Sultan of Florida. It took more than two centuries for her people to relocate her Morocco, Abderrahmane read the letter and asked and welcome her spirit back home through grand celebrations in 2018. then-President John Adams and Secretary of State Henry Clay to release Sori. In 1829, Foster agreed to the release of Sori for no payment in return. The caveat was that Sori had to leave the U.S. immediately and return to Africa. He embarked for Monrovia, Liberia. After living in Liberia for four months, Sori contracted a fever and died at the age of 67. Princess Anta Madjiguene Ndiaye – Senegal

Princess Aqualtune Ezgondidu Mahamud da Silva Santos – Central Africa

King Takyi – Ghana King Takyi was a Fanti king from Gold Coast, now modern Ghana. There are no records of which group of Fantis he ruled over before becoming a slave but research indicates that he might have been the ruler of a settlement in Kommenda or Koromantse in the central region of Ghana. Takyi was also a wealthy merchant and slave trader himself until he was captured during the Kommender Wars and sold off into slavery when his state was defeated. In May of 1760, Takyi and his followers started the revolt in the early hours of the morning, starting at the plantation where they worked, killing the owners and thus freeing all the slaves. The rebellion lasted until July when Takyi was gunned down and killed. After he was shot, his head was cut and displayed in the centre of the town to indicate that the rebellion had been stopped and the freed slaves and Takyi’s army were now in danger.

Princess Mahamud was the daughter of an unknown King of Kongo. Kongo was located in modern-day northern Angola, the Republic of Congo, the western part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and southern Gabon. From 1891 to 1914, Kongo was a vassal state of Portugal. In 1665, Princess Aqualtune Ezgondidu Mahamud da Silva Santos led 10,000 men into the Battle of Mbwila; between the Kingdom of Kongo and the Kingdom of Portugal. After the Battle of Mbwila, the princess was transported to the Port of Recife, a warehouse and sugar mill.t is documented that the princess was purchased solely for the purpose of reproduction with other slaves. When she became pregnant, the princess was sold to a mill in Porto Calvo, Brazil. The princess later founded the Palmares or the Quilombo dos Palmares, a community in Alagoas, Brazil comprised of runaway slaves.

Prince Ayuba Suleiman Diallo – Senegal

Ayuba Suleiman Diallo was born in 1701 in Bundu; present-day Senegal. Also known as Job Ben Solomon, Diallo was a descendant of Muslim Fulbe religious leaders. His grandfather was the founder of Bundu. Diallo was also a merchant and scholar. In 1730, Diallo and his interpreter Loumein Yoas also referred to as Lamine Jay, Lahamin Joy, Lahmin Jay, Lamine Ndiaye and Loumein Ybai were captured by members of the Mandinka tribe. This occurred by the Gambia river. They were subsequently sold to the Royal African Company. Diallo was settled in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1733, Diallo was sent to England. It was there he learned to communicate in English. He was also able to infiltrate the clique of the London elite. In July of 1734, Diallo was finally able to return to the Gambia. His newfound homeland had been destroyed by war, his wives were remarried and his father died.

Prince William Ansah Sessarakoo – Ghana Sessarakoo was born in 1736 in Annamaboe, Gold Coast, modern day Ghana in West Africa. He was a born a royal prince and heir to the throne of Annamaboe in the central region of Ghana. His father, Chief Eno Baise Kurentsi who later became known as John Corrente was a slave trader and an important ally for any trader in the city. When William Ansah Sessarakoo was old enough, his father sent him to England in an attempt for him to gain quality education and to build a partnership with the English to gain accurate information about the happenings in Europe. Sessarakoo was sent aboard a ship and entrusted to the captain for transport. Instead, the ship’s captain sold Sessarakoo into slavery in Barbados. He was discovered in Barbados years later by a free Fante trader who alerted John Corrente. Corrente petitioned the British to free his son. The Royal African Company, the English company operating the slave trade freed him and transported him to England before he was later sent home.

They wish they had acquired information about the home buying process sooner; as it is one of the greatest investment ever acquired. Therefore, to you my reader thinking about pursuing home ownership venture but have no idea how the montly payment contributes to your investment/in building equiting, I dedicated this piece to you.

Home buying is a great avenue of investment and building up savings or cash through home equity. Home equity is derived through your mortgage payment. As you pay your mortgage every month, a portion of the payment count towards the principal balance of the loan, the interest, county/state property taxes and home insurance to protect your home incase of fire, flood etc…

Home Owners Association (HOA) is separate payment from your mortgage. HOA typically covers trash removal, snow removal for common areas etc… Utilities such as gas, electricity, cable, water etc is also separate from HOA and your mortgage payment.

“It has created some awareness that I may not have been aware of otherwise and inspires me to do the same – because things have to and must change at the top of WADA. Speaking out and being different is how I’m spreading the love of the sport in Ghana. I want the sport to be clean and fair. There needs to be a change to be able to protect sports, to help us all believe in our leadership again. The leadership is something I have to rely on due to the massive challenges we face as small nations. To guide us in regard to clean sport and regulation, we need a more reliable leadership to follow and guide us. As small nations, like mine in Africa, we focus on building our sports. As a small nation, there is no excuse not to speak out, but we don’t have the same resources as other nations, or as much free time to focus on things we assume our leadership is handling with integrity,” Akwasi said in a press statement.

Akwasi continued that: “Because we have so many more challenges, it is even more important that our leadership be strong and reliable to guide us. I support ‘The Alternative’ as the answer to WADA’s governance problems; I have signed the petition, and think that it is a diplomatic and fair solution to present to WADA. Let’s hope that, given their huge meetings in Azerbaijan this week, that they listen to my view and the view of thousands of others away from their Board table. Anti-doping is a much bigger issue than one Board table of members.”

African Stars of Pyeongchang 2018 Seun Adigun and Akwasi Frimpong endorse ‘The Alternative’ as World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Foundation Board convenes for a critical meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital.

Nigerian and Dutch-Ghanaian stars of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics added their names on November 15, 2018 to the fast-rising athlete outpour calling for major changes at WADA. Nigerian Bobsled Captain Adigun and Africa’s first skeleton athlete Frimpong call ‘The Alternative‘ the answer to WADA’s governance problems.

The Athlete-Led Anti-Doping Reform Paper for WADA, ‘The Alternative‘, has been endorsed by the anti-doping leaders of 18 countries, and by the governments, leaders, and athletes participating at the Emergency White House Anti-Doping Summit on October 31. There has been a movement, by reformers, that seems to be inspiring athletes to speak out.

Voices of athletes is spreading fast in a way not seen before in the world of anti-doping. However, there has been some criticism against the reformers – the National Anti-Doping Leaders, athletes and government officials who have united in speaking out – through criticism that they are “primarily Anglo-Saxon Nations”, that these 18 nations, in the view of the World Anti-Doping Agency leadership, do not represent the rest of the world.

Today, there are two voices that are proud to add their support to ‘The Alternative‘. We are also proud to explain why other nations may not be as vocal as some of the nations that have spoken for change already.

Dr. Seun Adigun, D.C. of Nigeria, was the captain of the Nigerian Bobsled Team — the first African nation to participate in the event in the 2018 Olympics. “After we qualified for the Olympics, there was this uproar within Nigeria, the Nigerian diaspora, and non-Nigerian people. People were really excited that there was a winter effort and something positive happening for Nigeria,” said Adigun.

She took this momentum after the Games and has begun building her Nigerian Federation, spreading the love of the sport, and doing what she can to help grow the sport in Nigeria. She has even recruited the first ever men’s bobsled team for Nigeria! Her focus has been on spreading the love for the sport, that anyone can do anything, and that the pursuit of excellence can create dreams you didn’t even know you had.

Another first for the 2018 Games was the first black male African Skeleton Athlete, Akwasi Frimpong. Akwasi wants to be the ‘Hope of a billion‘ African children and show them their dreams of being a doctor, a lawyer, or an Olympian are possible. He wants his example of determination and perseverance as an international athlete to give them a voice to pursue their own dreams.

The focus for both athletes has been on recruiting, building a federation, and anything beyond that has been them relying on and trying to trust the leadership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and WADA. The recent movement in which athletes have been speaking out and asking for reform is however a new concept for them.

Both Seun and Akwasi feel they are not alone in the challenges they face as small nations. When asked if they had spoken to their Athletes Commission, they both confessed that they didn’t even know if their National Olympic Committee (NOC) had one. They explained the focus for their nations and sports was different, and it hadn’t occurred to them that the Athletes’ Commission might be a resource.

“Everyone should be held to the same standard of fairness no matter what country they are representing and which sport they play. We all give so much of ourselves every single day and sacrifice our lives to be the best we can be naturally – no one should be able to dilute those efforts or strip them away by cheating. In any country where there is a doping scandal, the system and the culture that was in place for this type of behavior to be acceptable should be broken down and reeducated to prevent innocent-hearted athletes from being punished in the future,” said Seun.

We, the world’s athletes who support ‘The Alternative’, want a vastly-improved WADA that champions three essential themes: accountability, transparency, and independence.

Now, as you convene around the Board Table in Baku, today is the time to engage and take this once-in-a-generation opportunity for change. Please take the world athletes’ solutions seriously – confidence in WADA is at an all-time low — the statement revealed.

Small nations like ours greatly rely on your guidance and leadership, and we believe this proposal offers some fair and reasonable solutions, concluded the statement which was signed by both atheletes respectively on behalf of their country’s foundation dealing with thier respective winter sports.
