WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) today announced the launch of the agency’s redesigned website available in both English and Spanish. The redesigned website provides customers with a simplified and more userfriendly experience.

“This redesign demonstrates our ongoing commitment to improving the quality of service we provide,” said USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas. “Throughout the past year, we have evaluated traffic on the website and listened to valuable feedback from users.

Today’s launch is the result of that effort and we are confident the public will find an improved online experience.”

The USCIS website incorporates current best practices while introducing a new content management system that will improve functionality and allow for continued enhancements. Some of the improvements to the new website include better navigation menus, a tools section that helps customers complete common electronic transactions, and a more prominent search bar that produces improved results.

nent rotating banner that highlights timely information and introduces alerts that provide important news and other customer notifications at-aglance. In response to stakeholder feedback, USCIS has also streamlined the change of address online tool to provide an easier, more efficient process for customers.

The new and improved USCIS website is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Web strategy to use a common content management system and consolidate the Department’s public websites.

The agency plans further enhancements in the coming months.

USCIS first redesigned its website in September 2009, fulfilling the Obama administration’s commitment to offer enhanced navigation tools for the public to access immigration information and review case status.

A 28 year old Ghanaian, Mr. Derrick Addae, CEO of GIL Corporation from Kwabre-Aboaso in the Ashanti Region, has invented a pocket PC tablet which can compete with most of the known tablets on the international market like Apple’s IPad and Samsung’s Galaxy tablet.

Mr. Addae’s invention is called ‘G’ Slab and is capable of making phone calls, it has wi-fi and Bluetooth and built-in Microsoft word with which one can upload any document from USB stick or Dongle.

Gambia TV Host Fatou Camara Flees to the US

Gambian TV talk show host Fatou Camara, who fled to the US after being charged with sedition, has told the BBC she will never go home while President Yahya Jammeh's government is in power.

She said she believes she was targeted by people in government with personal grudges.

"I think it's a group of people who are really jealous, who don't want me to do what I have to do or maybe I was becoming too popular for them," she said.

'Living in fear' The TV presenter, who jumped bail last month, initially fled to neighbouring Senegal before emerging in the US on Saturday with her family.

She has twice served as Mr Jammeh's director of communications - for three months in 2011 and another three months earlier this year, and was sacked on both occasions.

During her detention, Ms Camara said that intelligence officers demanded her Facebook and email passwords.

She would reportedly have faced 15 years in jail if she was found guilty of sedition under new internet laws.

The accusations are linked to false information about Mr Jammeh allegedly printed in the Freedom Newspaper, an online publication about The Gambia based in the US. After Ms Camara was granted bail, she said she lost her job.

"I was told they have an executive directive that I should not appear on that TV again, you think it makes sense for me to stay there?" she said.

"Already people are running away from me, nobody wants to talk to me because nobody wants to get in trouble, so I think what I did is the best thing."

The Gambian government's treatment of journalists and opposition parties has long also caused huge concern among human rights groups.

Mr Jammeh seized power in 1994 as a young army lieutenant and has won four widely criticised multi-party elections since then.

Ms Camara said people in The Gambia were never openly critical of the president.

"People are living in fear, people are not comfortable, people cannot even talk on the phone because they're scared somebody could be listening to their conversation."

Nigerian Day Parade 2013 In New York City

Ethiopia’s ambitious plan to build a $4.2 billion dam in the Benishangul-Gumuz region, 40 kms from its border with Sudan, is expected to provide 6,000 megawatts of electricity, enough for its population plus some excess it can sell to neighbouring countries. Dubbed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, it will be Africa’s biggest dam and will depend on water from the 6,700-km Nile River, the world’s longest river.

But Ethiopia must first resolve matters with Egypt, which, along with Sudan, claims the rights to the river following a 1929 agreement. That agreement excluded other countries along the Nile River trajectory, such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Egypt fears that the dam will suck up water flows to the country and severely affect its domestic consumption.

About 86% of the Nile River’s water actually originates from Ethiopia, a point the country is underscoring to press its case. In addition, it says that independent experts believe the dam will not affect water flows to Egypt. “There should not be any concerns about a diminished water flow,” Alemayehu Tegenu, Ethiopia’s minister of water and energy, told the Associated Press news agency.

Such assurances have not calmed Egypt’s fears. In early June, thenpresident Mohammed Morsi directed his foreign and irrigation ministers to get more information from Ethiopia on the dam’s impact on water supply to Egypt. Although President Morsi took a cautious approach, some Egyptian politicians were demanding a stronger response.

Many observers, however, believe that the countries will find a compromise point that will allow Ethiopia to complete the project by July 2017 and also ensure that there is no impact on water flows to Egypt’s population.

Egypt also recently launched a water transportation route that will connect it with nine other East African countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

Managing trans-boundary water resources is not always a complicated matter. Since 1994, for example, Angola, Botswana, and Namibia have successfully managed water supplies from the 1,100-km Okavango River that runs through all three countries. They signed an agreement to coordinate water sharing and sustainable use, and even set up the Permanent Okavango River Basin Water Commission to monitor the agreement.

Water is a huge issue in Africa. Up to 300 million Africans still don’t have access to safe drinking water, according to the World Bank. The UN in 2010 declared access to clean water a fundamental human right.

Drought in the horn of Africa has caused thousands of deaths, killing 260,000 people in Somalia alone from 2010 to 2012, according to the US-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network, which provides information on food insecurity.

African countries are making mixed progress towards the Millennium Development Goal drinking water global target, which is to halve by 2015 the number of people without access to clean water.

While North Africa has attained up to 92% water coverage, subSaharan Africa has only managed 63%, states the 2013 Millennium Development Goals report. The report adds that in sub-Saharan Africa improvements have mainly been in the urban areas, while in the rural areas about 40% of households still don’t have access to safe water.

With 2013 declared by the UN as the International Year of Water Cooperation, African governments, development agencies, citizens and others will have to formulate and implement policies to ensure efficient water management.

Ghana Makes Breakthrough In Heart Surgery

The National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has successfully carried out a ground-breaking heart surgery without opening the chest of the patient.

The one-hour coronary stenting surgery on a 50-year-old Nigerian could have taken five hours if the heart surgeons had used the normal open-heart procedure.

A coronary stenting surgery involves placing a tube in the coronary arteries which supply the heart with blood to keep the arteries open in the treatment of coronary heart disease; the most common type of heart disease that leads to heart attacks.

A stent is a tiny, expandable mesh tube made of medical-grade stainless steel or cobalt alloy metal.

Three doctors, led by the Director of the NCC, Dr Lawrence Agyemang Sereboe, performed the surgery on Mr Muhammed Diggol from Kano State, Nigeria, who was diagnosed of severe heart pains which made it difficult for him to breathe properly.

Other members of the team were Dr Abdul-Samed Tanko, Head of the Cardiology Unit, and Dr Martin Adu Adade, a cardiologist.

Dr Sereboe told newsmen in Accra yesterday that although the coronary stenting surgery was being practised, the absence of trained medical personnel had made it difficult for the procedure to be used for patients in Ghana.

“Now we have experienced and trained medical personnel available and patients with early heart-related diseases can seek treatment without having to travel outside the shores of Ghana,” he said.

Dr Sereboe said until the introduction of the coronary stenting surgery, patients suffering from heart diseases underwent surgical operations which took about five hours.

“But now that the new procedure is available, it will take only one hour for an operation,” he added.

“A patient needs about $25,000 for similar operations to be conducted if he or she is to travel outside the country,” he added.

The cost of an open-heart surgery is about 10,000 euros, making the coronary stenting surgery cheaper.

A pro-government rally took place on October 6 at the Murtala Muhammed Square in Kaduna to solicit support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s alleged bid to contest the 2015 election.

However, the gathering tagged Northern Youth Rally ended in chaos after the participants began demanding their “share of the money,” the organisers allegedly collected from the presidency.

Security operatives took away an official of the Northern Youth Forum (NYF) from the venue to prevent him from being lynched by the angry youths who threw sand, stones and sachet water at him.

The youths shouted: “Give us our own share, give us our own share.”

Pro-government rallies, reminiscent of the Abacha era, are on their way back in the country.

This time, they will be at the instance of Nollywood stars whose delegation met in Abuja with the National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) ,Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to work out the modalities.

The project is planned to include ‘peace’ rallies and concerts in the six geo-political zones, according to leader of the delegation, Emeka Ike.

It is expected to be in collaboration with celebrities in the music industry and Nigerian footballers.

The organisers said the rallies would be geared toward addressing the drifting socio-political situation in the country.

Ike told the party chairman that the stars would mobilise Nigerian youths on the need for togetherness and peaceful coexistence in the country, most especially at the grassroots.

On August 25, the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, locked down the Federal Capital Territory metropolis with what she described as a mass rally and carnival organised to take “stock of the gains recorded so far in the empowerment of Nigerian women and the quest for peace in the country”.

The artists said the planned rallies would also focus on the need for the PDP to resolve its internal crises so that the ruling party could focus on governance in the interest of the Nigerian people.

According to them, a module has been developed for infusing the culture of responsiveness and national interest in political office holders in the land.

The event, they added, would also feature renowned footballers like Celestine Babayaro and music stars like 2-Face Idibia.

The rally was the brain child of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) in collaboration with the office of the First Lady of the Federation.

Harry Sawyer is Dead Harry Sawyerr is a former Ghanaian politician and quantity surveyor.

Harry Sawyerr was the first person to be president of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors. He served two terms spanning 1969 to 1971.

He was among the founders of the United National Convention formed to contest the 1979 parliamentary election. He however left the party to stand as an independent candidate and became a Member of Parliament in the Third Republic Parliament.

Okyenhene Lobbies U.S Govt On Support For Mined Land Reclamation

The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has impressed upon the United States government to extend the work of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to cover the growing environmental and economic challenges afflicting several communities in Africa, which have been devastated by small scale and illegal surface mining.

The Okyenhene, the traditional ruler of the Akyem Abuakwa State in Ghana, specifically called for assistance in efforts to reclaim mined lands that have become economically unproductive and hazardous to the environment.

He made this appeal for assistance in Ghana’s land reclamation efforts in a meeting held at the US State Department, Washington DC, last Wednesday, with the Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Small-scale mining and illegal mining are carried out in rural farming communities, with devastating consequences to crop land as vegetal cover is destroyed and upper soil excavated to access the mineral bearing soil underneath.

The poverty in Ghana’s mineral-rich farming communities has led to farmers selling off their lands, the very source of their regular subsistence income, to illegal miners, who abandon the mined land after 3-5 years, leaving the environment unsafe, unhealthy and unproductive.

The Okyenhene, who is on a three-week working visit the United States, impressed upon the head of the US State Department Bureau of African Affairs, about the need for her government to seriously factor reclamation of mined lands in its international development programs with countries like Ghana, which are struggling to deal with the social, economic and environmental costs of surface mining.

Mrs Thomas-Greenfield nodded her approval, pointing out that this falls directly within the USAID programs of environmental sustainability, food security and agriculture, global health and humanitarian assistance.

She, therefore, directed that the necessary consultation be done with the Ghana office towards this end.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz at the weekend apologized and called for a peace meeting with Nigerian-Americans who have demanded that he retracts his controversial joke last week, which many of them considered insulting.

According to a letter from the senator released at the weekend to leaders of the Nigerian community in Houston, Texas, where the controversial comments were made, Cruz “regrets any misunderstanding.”

The letter was signed by one of the aides of the Senator, Mr. David Sawyer, the South-East Texas Regional Director in his office.

Sawyer, in another statement, is also asking for a peace meeting today between Senator Cruz and representatives of the Nigerian community in Houston. Cruz has been bombarded with several phone calls from Nigerians in Houston and all across the U.S. since last Monday, October 21, comments.

Besides, there has been a big splash of negative media focus on the American senator in the U.S., which peaked on Friday with the widely reported response of the Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S., Prof Ade Adefuye, who in a firm manner asked the U.S. senator to apologize.

The letter of apology, copy of which was made available to The Guardian , quoted the senator directly in part. It read thus:

“Earlier , Sen. Ted Cruz made a joke in which he used the term ‘Nigerian email scam.”

Senator Cruz regrets that “it is unfortunate that we’re living in a time where just about every joke can be misconstrued to cause offense to someone.”

Cruz has never, nor would ever use a blanket term in a derogatory fashion against such a vibrant and integral part of our community.

This usage was never directed to the Nigerian community as a whole.

“To the good people of Nigeria – a beautiful nation where my wife lived briefly as the child of missionaries – no offense was intended.

I am fully appreciative of the range of mutual economic and security interests that make Nigeria an important friend to the United States,” Cruz said in a statement .

They are both growing in the right direction but I have noticed that life in Nollywood is more upbeat. For instance, whenever I am in Lagos, everything is moving fast! Nigerians are hasty when doing things while Ghanaians are laid back and relaxed.

So, when I am in Nigeria, I double my speed and when I get back to Ghana, I relax again.

Journey into acting

I started acting at the age of 12 in my local church group.

However, I became a professional actress when I starred in the TV series, Things We Do for Love. I have since evolved from that and learned a lot from everything around me including mistakes. As we grow older, a lot of things change and we mature in experience. I am a changed person, older, stronger, and wiser.

My rise has been due to plenty of hard work and commitment to what I do. I always have it at the back of my mind that everything is possible. Impossibility does not exist in my dictionary.

Sometimes, the best things happen when you just go with your instincts. I wouldn’t forget my team and crew, fellow actors and actresses who all contributed to where I am today. Above all, talent is a gift from God, who shows me the way and leads me to the light.

Challenges

Being in the limelight was not something I was prepared for and it is not as easy as everyone thinks. I would say fame is the most difficult thing to control because your life is no longer private.

The media is constantly on your trail and people think all sorts of things about you. These are things that are beyond your control, you can’t get a hang of them. Sometimes the tales are so terrible you just want to sit in your room and cry! Sometimes these stories get to you but over time I have learnt to ignore them.

I am Jackie Appiah, a Ghanaian but was born in Canada in the early 80s. We moved back to Ghana in 1993. I had a very happy childhood with lots of friends.

As Christians, I like to think that we are careful to keep in mind that as long as we have accepted Christ as our personal Savior, we immediately enter a spiritual warfare against the agents of darkness. It is a spiritual truth. It is a spiritual choice.

Joshua tells the Israelites, “…if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15). And St. Paul says, “… many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction… Their mind is set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” Phil.

(3:18-20). Though unbelievers are for the Anti-Christ and do not know it, because they haven’t come to know and/or accept the truth of Christ as their personal Savior, we, Christians who read the word of God and have been taught, know the truth and do our best to remain in the path that Christ has laid for us. We witness to others and share our testimonies.

We read the Bible and sing our songs of praise. We attend church services and hold various positions in the church—all in the service of God. We are called. We are blessed. And we are victorious.

Well, we are victorious and feel victorious until a trial really hits us hard.

The trial could be a terrible situation that we can’t get over. While we can attest to the goodness of God in our lives, the situation rocks us so terribly that we cannot believe that our loving and faithful God has permitted it to befall us, we who have been so faithful, we who have been so dutiful. We become despondent. We become disturbed. We become discouraged. And we think things and even say things that we shouldn’t. One elderly woman close to me once bitterly complained and asked why the Lord allowed her old mother to die and permit her evil mother-in-law to continue to live! She was serious and she was in pain. She was not ready to lose her mother though her mother had lived a very long life. She took it as a terrible blow, which death is,

but that her mother-in-law was still alive, had nothing to do with her mother’s health, life or death. Yet her question was why must she suffer when she had been a good Christian and her mother who was also a good Christian died while an evil woman continued to walk the earth? She was devastated and questioned God’s goodness and judgment.

How many of us have not questioned God? Even Job, this most righteous man even by God’s own account questioned God. God says of Job that “there is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil” (Job 1: 8). While Job was faithful and did not sin despite the sudden and devastating loss of all his children and property, and the painful and embarrassing disease inflicted on him, he still questioned God. He asks God, “Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?” (Job 3:11). And he further expresses his bitterness saying, “I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul” (Job 7:11). But having the last word, God responds by reprimanding Job questioning him, who are you and where were you when I created the world? How do you dare question my actions? (Job 38). Yet, even after God chastises him, He restores everything Job lost and blesses him beyond what he had in his previous life.

We are likely not as righteous as Job was, yet we question God when we go through something painful, something we consider unbearable, though the Bible teaches that “no temptation has overtaken us except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. But when we are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that we can endure it.” (I Cor. 10:13). Let’s recall that the great prophet Elijah also once ran away from serving the Lord for fear of his pending fate. After all Elijah did, risking his life as God’s representative, commanding the heavens to shut out rain for years, and then reversing it publically in front of his idol-worshiping enemies to prove the omnipotence of His Yahweh God, and then killing four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal yet, this prophet quickly took to the hills in his desperate escape for fear of the threats made by the wicked and murderous Jezebel. I Kings chapter 19 states, “now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” Elijah was afraid and ran for his life… into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no

better than my ancestors” (1-5).

A dejected and disillusioned Elijah bitterly complained to God about his suffering and further said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too” (I Kings 19:10). Yes, even the great prophet Elijah, after all his demonstrations of wonder in the name of God, which one would think should rather embolden him, became discouraged and even bitter. While it is understandable that Elijah would be downcast, his assumptions were unfounded. He thought highly of his service and faithfulness to God, yet God made him know that He had reserved seven thousand faithful Israelites who worshiped Him. For example, there was Elisha, the one who would soon replace Elijah.

We can see ourselves through Elijah’s expressions that as flesh and blood, when we are tried and our backs are against the wall, we tend to be true to our feelings instead of our calling, we want to quit; we want to die. We succumb to questions of why and how because we are hurting and living by our emotions when we should be thinking higher, living in the spirit and keeping our focus on our spiritual mission and purpose. Yes, we are here to serve a purpose and it is not all about us, though we like to think it is. But even if we can only think about ourselves at such times, then we should again think higher and keep our minds on God’s plan for us, because He assures us that, “…I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29: 11). When we don’t stay focused on the love and mercies of God, we make terrible and faulty assumptions and say foolish things, making accusations of God and getting ourselves in trouble with the Supreme Being. Despite Elijah’s complaints, we learn that God thought so much of him that Elijah did not die a natural death, but was taken by a whirlwind to heaven (II Kings 2:1). Like Elijah and Job, we can’t begin to imagine how God will reward us for our faithfulness.

We sing a common song during worship.

The song says, “Lord prepare me, to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true, with thanksgiving, I'll be a living sanctuary, for you.” When we sing this song, we say to our God, our acknowledged Maker and Master that we offer our lives, our entire beings to Him. We resign our power and feelings, our agency to do His will to please Him. We tell Him that He owns us, that we want to be worthy vessels within which His Spirit can live, vessels that He can use to His glory. We tell Him that we are sacrificing our lives to Him just as He sacrificed His for us on Calvary. But when all hell breaks loose on us, instead of being true to the work He did on the cross for us, we revert to our sense of self either in complaints, anger, or resignation.

When we are tried and prove true to our emotions, rather than stay focused on the work we are called to do, we are in the least chastised as Job was or are punished like Moses. Moses, a true servant, developed a great relationship with God. In that time, there was no one that God showed Himself to as much as He did Moses. God regularly spoke with Moses, encouraging, guiding, and directing his words and actions. He even defended Moses’ honor by punishing those who spoke against him. But even Moses, one who is described as the meekest of men came to a point in the road, where he yielded to his emotions instead of to God. Because Moses was fed up with the complaining and ungrateful Israelites, instead of speaking to the Rock to retrieve water as God had instructed him, an angry Moses struck it (Numbers 20:10).

Consequently, God did not allow him to set foot on the Promised Land.

How tragic for us that like Moses, we will miss our reward because in the midst of adverse circumstances, we allow our emotions to rule us and guide our actions.

When we are tested and tried and we become desperate to escape our lot, will we be true to our emotions or to the God in whom we have believed, the God to whom we have pledged our allegiance?

Let us pray that we will be careful to be wise and discerning, to be slow to murmuring and to refrain from accusing God. It is all together tragic that aside from Joshua and Caleb, none of the original Israelites who escaped the bondage of slavery made it to the Promised Land, because they angered God through their murmurings, ungratefulness, rebellion and forgetfulness of God’s goodness and mercy. They were either destroyed by God Himself or He simply allowed them to expire before the end of the journey.

And to think that even one as faithful and tested as Moses who had been so close to God should also not cross the threshold to Canaan! If we want to achieve the goal ahead of us, if we want to realize God’s promise for our lives, then let us be wise and temper our words and actions, becoming more humble, Christians who are worthy vessels deserving of honor.

But Matt Patterson believes American Christianity has lost its evangelical fervor.

It had no U.S. presence a few decades ago, but has since planted hundreds of churches across the country. A visit to the church’s newly expanded headquarters in northern Texas shows what is in the works.

J. Lee Grady, Charisma News – I spend a lot of time investing in young leaders—and I constantly urge them to learn from the mistakes we made in the previous move of God. I appreciate the positive things the Holy Spirit did during the charismatic movement, but we made a mess because we didn’t lead with integrity.

The apostle Paul gave us a crash course in leadership in his second letter to the Corinthians.

While studying that epistle recently, I identified four of the biggest mistakes we made during the charismatic revival. I pray we’ve learned our lesson so we can avoid these flaws in the next season.

1. Charlatanism. We charismatics lost our credibility during the past 30 years because certain greedy preachers manipulated their audiences to pad their own pockets. Just as a little leaven spreads to the whole lump of dough, the charlatans ruined it for all of us.

The apostle Paul told the Corinthians, “For we are not like many, peddling the Word of God” (2 Cor. 2:17, NASB). The Greek word for peddling, kapeleuo, means “to make money by selling; to corrupt; to get gain by teaching divine truth.” How many well-known charismatic preachers started out well but ended up as pitiful peddlers, begging for dollars to pay for luxury cars and mansions they felt they needed to prove their importance? (And now some of these guys have their own reality show, The Preachers of L.A., which airs in October and features Noel Jones and Clarence McClendon.)

2. Entitlement. Paul continually reminded the Corinthians that he was a servant: “For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Cor. 4:5). Servanthood is the most fundamental requirement for any leader. Yet in our movement, we celebrated the opposite attitude by allowing leaders with out-of-control egos to demand special treatment.

A Man on a Mission-The Advocate for An African Community Resource Center (ACRC)

Dennis Bioh is on a mission to empower and inspire the next generation. He has devoted his career in serving and opening doors for the African community to experience the American dream. At the age of 23 as a key figure among the next generation of leaders, Dennis want to bring opportunities to Africans in particular, living in Virginia and the larger Washington Metropolis to provide various services with the intention to improve social mobility and thereby reducing poverty.

Dennis noticed the lack of awareness that his fellow countrymen have when it came to obtaining resources that exist in the U.S. As President and CEO of The African community Resource Center (ACRC), his vision is to empower the African immigrants, accessing resources available and building capacity for socio-economic development and improve opportunities and become more self-sufficient.

Dennis did not let being too young stop him from running a successful campaign for the ACRC project; he calls on young people everywhere not to let age stop them from changing the world. His diligence and courageous spirit has led him on a successful path of serving others Dennis determination of making a difference is unquestionable. In his time in living and studying in the United States, he has explored an extensive opportunity the land have to offer and thus using that knowledge to create social change.

The organization mission is to assist low-income families and African immigrants, in accessing available resources and to build the capacity for socio-economic development.

The African Community Resource Center (ACRC) fulfills its mission by offering a wide variety of social and cultural activities to its target population which includes families, local civic organizations, and businesses. ACRC offers classes, special events and seasonal activities for all ages.

The organization’s year round programming will provide educational enrichment, technical awareness and training aimed at enhancing the well - being of our community.

In a recent interview we caught up with Dennis to talk about his inspiration, motivation and his interest in serving the community.

You were 23 when you started this organization what prompted you to start this organization?

“I’ve always been fascinated about having an idea. Understanding what it means to me. How I can make it happen, and make it that everyone can use. But I think this organization is bigger than that.

When I think the greater good it carries and the impact it would have not only this generation but the next generation and many more to come. The inheritance of the next generation is far from rectify.

This organization is about looking ahead of what needs to be done for the next generation. Educating the kids, getting them ready for the work force and the real life ahead. Creating opportunities for the elderly so they will be able to go back home and influence the continent of Africa.

I think about the kind of man I want to be and the possibility of being a part of change.” I think about every sacrifice that has being made to make it possible for me. It goes beyond doing something and having your name attached to it.

What are your biggest challenges and how do you work to overcome them?

I think my biggest challenge is “My age” People fear what they don’t know.

But that’s what leadership is about. You have to be able to create that platform. Communicate that to the people and gain their trust. The only thing I have is my name so for me the key is to LIVE BY EXAMPLE Success attracts. So sooner or later we would get that massage out. I have a real success circle so it’s

“Dream big by sitting yourself the impossible challenge” Choose company that you can influence, hang with people that will inspire you. Because the environment we find ourselves in is what we become. That’s nature vs. nurture.

There are a lot of opportunities out there. We only have to apply our self and give ourselves a chance, so learn the system, work the system and push things through the system.

The covering of head is mentioned by Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:3-15. The passage differentiates between HEAD and HAIR. Verse 3 refers to the HEAD of the woman as the Man whiles in verse 15 the HAIR of women serves for covering, glory and beauty. Again the context of the passage is on marriage. The Christian Journal, Bronx, NY - You may have been encouraged and drawn to worship by her songs. Ghana’s powerhouse vocalist Victoria Sarfo led a power and spiritual worship at Inspirational Gospel Assembly in the Bronx New York at 1122 Brooke Avenue.

Excitement was in the air as the praise & worship service was under way with Minister Edna Darko with a spirited and powerful song.

In her sermon, Bishop Rosemary Porbeni spoke about how fear has prevented people of faith to achieve their dreams. We should not be afraid and Put our minds together. Many reasons why so many dreams have died are because of fear. She said.

Many times we are afraid to take a step of faith especially we Africans. All the branches that are in you may it not die in Jesus name. If anybody approaches you with an idea please help. When Victoria decided to sing there were many who taught she cannot sing, but that did not deter her and now she has sing in so many countries.

Today we are here to support a dream, a woman who have achieved her dream and is helping so many dreams come true. So let’s help our neighbors, friends because we don’t know what they will become tomorrow.

I don’t speak the language but when I listen to the CD “kasa” talk to me, that album has brought inspiration, hope and faith to so many people. Brethren whatever we have identified in any one of us let’s help bring to reality. She said in her closing remarks.

Prince and Emma followed with spirited renditions of songs from various Ghanaians artist that was very powerful but yet reverent.

It was the star of the night Victoria Sarfo, who took her turn delivering her powerful brands of gospel; the audience in attendance needed no help, they knew all the lyrics, and many danced in the aisles.

The Audience, with their arms stretched above their heads, with faces turned upward; worshiping God in Awe. The rest of the night: a whirling, dancing, frenetic the audience came out in force to worship with Victoria Sarfo and the rest.

There was a fundraising which was supported by a host of ministers who were there to worship. To them it was a surprise, because they were not noted ahead of the event, but did their best.

Members of the Church from the United States and Canada joined hands to provide food items, clothing, bible tracts and hygiene products to the residents. They also served them with fresh and tasty cooked food . In addition to the items presented to the center they also presented a bountiful check for their upkeep .

This act of generosity has consistently been a part of the ministry’s activities as they periodically visit homeless shelters in the Northern Virginia area to clean up, pray, encourage the residents and feed them.

Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong Dazzles New Yorkers

The Christian Journal, Bronx, NY - Ghana’s well known male gospel artist, Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong on Saturday October 05 set the First Ghana Seventh Day Adventist Church in the Bronx alight when his highly anticipated Album “ALPHA” and “Nkurankye Nwuom” was finally unveiled.

What is so interesting is that this particular project incorporates traditional SDA hymns.

The “Nkuranhye Ndwom” just simply offers a wholesome unique listening, soul lifting experience while appealing to Ghanaians both young and old. The album launch created an electric atmosphere and excitement when a star-studded list of gospel artist led by SDA legend Osei Boateng, who performed before Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong took to the stage.

The artiste set his foot on stage with rousing ovation from the crowd. Anyway, Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong was superb except that he came on stage late. “Nkuranhye Nwuom ” is principally about Inspiring. Ampong said the title is a reference to the Inspiration he finds from listening of hymns.

More than 600 attended the launch including Community and Church leaders who were invited. Posters advertising the event were distributed in all parts of the Bronx.

“It is a dream come true. It is not an easy task to come up with a project such as this,” he said.

For decades African immigrants have flocked to the nursing field; particularly home healthcare and geriatric care industries. One could argue that the propensity to work in these areas is due to the demand for nurses in America. While the ability to jumpstart a career in the nursing field is enticing, the return on the investment can be less than optimal for African immigrants. The median income for home health care workers is only $10.58 which is significantly less than the average U.S. employee who earns approximately $15.98 per hour. The math shows African immigrants working as home health care aides are paid $5 less, per hour, than any other industry in the U.S. Furthermore, 30 percent of this segment has no access to health insurance through their employer, because they work for small nursing agencies that can’t afford to―or choose not to―foot the bill for health insurance.

In the last two weeks two major legislations will change the lives of African immigrants in a big way―the passage of minimum wage and overtime protections to home care

African immigrants working as home health care nursing assistants or personal aides to America’s elderly can now expect their employers to pay minimum wage and overtime pay. They will also be able to leverage health care exchanges to obtain adequate health insurance.

How these changes help improve lives of Africans in America

1. Most health care aides work two or more jobs to make ends meet which leaves no room for them to participate in the lives of their children’s education and other family obligations. With this bump in salary, they may be better positioned to lessen their work hours and achieve a better work life balance.

2. Access to health care for themselves, and family members, without the worry of financial bankruptcy as a result of medical condition, this will lift a burdensome load families in this community have been carrying for years.

While Capitol Hill is grid locked on a number of major issues, we are pleased that these two issues will help ease some basic challenges faced by Africans in America.

Nigeria Wins Under-17 World Cup

Nigeria won the Under-17 World Cup for a record fourth time on Friday with a 3-0 win over champions Mexico.

Erick Aguirre's own goal put the Golden Eaglets in front in Abu Dhabi.

The Nigerians doubled their lead with a tap in from Kelechi Iheanacho before captain Musa Mohamed's free kick sealed the win.

Nigeria also picked up the tournament's fair-play award and Dele Alampasu was awarded the Golden Glove for being the best goalkeeper.

The first goal came after nine minutes from a Nigerian counter-attack moments after the Mexicans had threatened at the other end.

The Golden Eaglets broke quickly to create a three-against-one situation, and as Musa Yahaya was about to pull the trigger, Aguirre's attempted clearance ended up in his own net.

Yahaya nearly doubled the lead in the 39th minute but his shot crashed against the bar.

Moments later, Taiwo Awoniyi tried a spectacular overhead kick but it went straight into the arms Raul Gudino in the Mexican goal.

Mexico threatened the Nigerian goal a couple of times in the first half but found Alampasu in inspired form.

The Mexicans pressed early in the second half but it was Nigeria who doubled their lead when Gudino parried a long range shot into the path of Kelechi Iheanacho, who tapped in for his sixth goal of the tournament.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Mexicans had a great chance to score but Ivan Ochoa headed wide.

The title was sealed when captain Mohamed curled a free kick round the wall from the edge of the area with nine minutes left.

The victory in the United Arab Emirates caps a successful year for Nigeria after the senior team won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in January.
