Osafo-Maafo Hails Ghana Economy At Embassy Luncheon In DC

Page 5

(Hon. Yaw Osafo-Maafo His Excellency (HE) Dr. Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States (US) on Monday October 16, 2017, held a luncheon in honor of Ghana’s Senior Minister Honorable (Hon) Yaw Osafo-Maafo and Finance Minister Hon Kenneth Ofori-Atta at the Ghana embassy in Washington, DC in appreciation of the efforts the respective ministers and their teams.

The Osafo-Maafo delegation was in the US to attend the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank annual meetings in Washington DC as well as meetings in New York forming part of the government’s roadshow to raise $2.5 billion to help prop Ghana’s economy.

In his welcome address at the luncheon, HE Adjei-Barwuah said he and the embassy staff had put the event together out of appreciation for the hard work that the delegation put in for the time that they’ve been in the US. It was also to get the Ghanaian community to “interact with those people who make our country tick” the Ambassador said.

Hon Yaw Osafo-Maafo thanked the Ambassador and Ghanaians in the US for their warm reception, he then went on to praise the Vice President of Ghana Dr. Mahamadu Bawunia who is Chair of the Economic Management Team (EMT) established by President Akufo-Addo that is composed of himself, the Ministers of Finance, Planning, Trade and Industry and Energy respectively. Hon Osafo-Maafo shares state of economy with Ghanaians in the US

The senior Minister thanked the EMT for helping plan the transitional budget during the takeover period after the 2016 elections by laying foundations that have today help in reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio in Ghana from 73.5% to about 70.5%. This figure is expected to decrease by the end of 2018 based on forecasts of the fiscal monitor report released by the (IMF).

The rate of inflation has been reduced from 15% to 12.2% and growth has jumped from 3.7% to about 9% as at the last quarter of 2017, painting a promising picture for employment creation according to Hon Osafo-Maafo. President Akufo-Addo has pointed out 4 cardinal areas Ghana needs to fine tune to allow for healthier economic growth, “they are microeconomic stability and debt sustainability, second is accelerated industrial development, third is infrastructure development and finally, agricultural transformation” according to Hon OsafoMaafo. “Everything we are doing is connected to these 4 cardinal principles which we are using to run the country and grow the economy” — Hon Yaw Osafo-Maafo. Biting the bullet necessary to rid Ghana of Galamsey and indiscipline

The Senior Minister announced that very soon the government will come out

with new rules and regulations to govern the small-scale mining industry and to ensure that people are not unfairly put out of employment while seeing to it that those engaged in Galamsey (illegal small-scale mining) are brought to book. He pointed out mining in all river beds and within certain distances of rivers and in forest reserves will be banned.

Though the courageous steps taken by the Akufo-Addo administration to tackle Galamsey in Ghana are slowly yielding results, there’s now the bigger battle of having to address the problems resulting from the pollution of water bodies created by illegal mining because “…even treating them [water from polluted rivers] for drinking has become a big problem because of the use of cyanide, chlorine and other pollutants…” Hon Osafo-Maafo said. “I think our country has a problem with discipline and therefore all of us will have to sympathize with the government as it tries to introduce some discipline into the system,” pleaded Hon OsafoMaafo who alluded to the fatal gas explosion that happened in the first week of October 2017 in Ghana. He went on to call on all to obey simple rules and regulations “to make our country prosper as the government is determined to bite the bullet” on this matter. Before taking his seat for lunch to be served, Hon Osafo-Maafo informed the embassy that Ghana is now embarking on an all-out campaign to prosper since “we are putting a lot of attention on the human capital development of our country” because any country that develops its human capital never regrets it. Dignitaries and special guests in attendance

Master of Ceremony at the luncheon was Mr. Eric Kwabena Boateng of the embassy’s Political Desk. Among the Hon-Osafo-Maafo-and-Hon Ofori-Atta team from Ghana was Hon Mark Asibey Yeboah the member of parliament for Juaben and ranking member of Finance, Minister of Planning Hon Prof Gyan Barfour, Dr. Yaw Nsu, advisor to the Ministry of Finance in Ghana and longtime staff of the World Bank and Deputy Minister of Information Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

Also in attendance was Mr. Ernest B. Asare-Asiedu, Minister Plenipotentiary and Head of Chancery at the Ghana Embassy, the Akwamuhene of Bekwai Traditional Council of Ghana Nana Ntiamoah Amankuo III and his wife Lydia Ntiamoah, representatives of African Ambassadors in the US, Ghanaians at the World Bank, leadership of respective Ghanaian associations in the Washington DC metro area, religious leaders including Rev Lord Asante Boadu who said the opening prayer, members of the community, and the media. He stated that IHEARDC is a not-for-profit organization based in College Park, Maryland that is dedicated to improving healthcare by providing interoperable electronic health record system for the people who need care to ensure continuity of care, evidence-based treatment, and preventing medical mistakes. He explained that after a keen feasibility study the group picked Ghana for a pilot to build interoperable cloud-based electronic health record system and an all in one clinical measurement device that is connected to a health records system. He explained that Ghana was picked because the country has in place the needed structures for the device to operate. Dr Yeong-Tae Song offered a quick live demonstration of the electronic health record system device. The device is a portable machine which can operate on electricity and an attached lithium battery in any environment. The demonstration provided an opportunity for the staff of the embassy to ask some pertinent questions ranging from security of data that will be collected to possible commercialization of the device.

Come Home

of its truth. After all, it is true that when I enter my Father’s house there is no more sorrow or pain, that when I enter His presence, my burdens are miraculously lifted and I am transformed. The concept of going to my Father’s house reminds me of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32. Recall that in the New Testament, the prodigal son, although he went to live a wayward lifestyle and squandered all his inheritance, when he realized the tragic mistake he had made in rejecting his father and family, resolved to return home. The story of the prodigal son connects to the idea of going home as illustrated Dr. Miriam C. Gyimah in the song and puts the lyrics of the song in a clearer here is a sweet, sweet place where I find perspective. Again, the song states, “I will go to my myself regularly. This place is where I Father’s house…all sadness and difficulties are over.” commune with God. Lately, when I enter When we consider the meaning of the song outside the this space, I often say “I am here Father, your discourse of death, it speaks of God’s grace and mercy. daughter has come.” (I say this when I have It is to remind us that Jesus says in Mathew 11:28, allowed the cares of the world and my busy “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, schedule to pull me away from His presence for a and I will give you rest”. It is to say that God is always day or more. I say this when I feel within me how there with open arms to receive us and to welcome us much I have missed our fellowship.) When I say into His presence. Why else would King David, a man this, joy and gladness fill me as I experience the after God’s own heart, say, “‘I was glad when they said pleasure of being in my heavenly Father’s presence. unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord?’” (Psalm There is no other person or entity that gives me 122:1) such pleasure, joy and assurance. It is good to When God receives us, He grants us the opportunity to know I can go into my Father’s presence and empty lay all our burdens down, to be cleansed and renewed. myself, laying all things down, knowing very well, When we go into God’s presence, we enter into the rest that I will leave that space lightened and empowthat we require, the rest and break from all sorts of ered. confusion and adversities. Whether we have always There is a song that I have been singing remained in God or left Him for a time as the prodigal regularly to myself the past two years. One day son left his father’s home, I say come home and lay all about two years ago, I noticed that I had been your burdens down. Take a break from your busy singing the song internally and then when I did my schedule and enter His presence. Enter to lay everything quiet time, the song would try to force its way out down. of my mouth. But even as it tried to push itself out When the prodigal son decided to swallow his pride of me, I would shake my head and not want to sing and to return home, he thought to himself that he would it, because I thought it was out of place. You see, it not return as a son, but as a servant, for he knew that is a Twi funeral song. I have heard it sung only at even his father’s servants were better off than he was in funerals. The song simply states “I will go to my the pig’s den he found himself. But upon his return, not Father’s house today; all sadness and difficulties are only was he welcomed as a servant, but also, he was over.” So of course, I would internally question restored as a son. Oo the sweetness of truly going home. “why would I want to sing this song?” Secondly, I Oo the comfort and safety in entering the presence of the didn’t feel comfortable, because singing the song Lord. In His presence, whether in a sanctuary or in your was as if I were prophesying about my probable own private space where you fellowship with Him, there death. As a result, I struggled many times to shut is cleansing, there is comfort, there is mercy, forgiveness this song out, but it would not allow me. One day and acceptance and there is unspeakable blessing. Oo to within these two years, as the song intruded itself be in the presence of God, to come home to our Father’s once again, in the middle of my attempt to resist it, house where there is liberty! I had an epiphany, an internal spiritual revelation, I am reminded of Ama Ata Aidoo’s novel, Our Sister and I finally succumbed to singing it. Killjoy or Reflections from a Black-Eyed Squint. In this I learned with the epiphany that it was book, Sissie, the protagonist travels to Europe and is at appropriate to sing the song, for although the lyrics one point homesick and yearns for her mother’s akatado and the music of that song are morose, going to my (covering cloth). She recollects the warmth, comfort and Father’s house did not always have to mean that security she feels when she is covered in her mother’s physical death has occurred or is about to be realakatado. Aidoo writes, “Sissie thought of home. To the ized. Going to my Father’s house also meant going time when she was a child in the village. Of how she to His sanctuary or going to a private space where always liked to be sleeping in the bedchamber when it one might worship and pray to God. Once I rained, her body completely-wrapped-up in one of her understood this in mind and heart, I was convinced

mother’s akatado-cloths while mother herself pounded fufu in the anteroom which also served as a kitchen when it rained. Oo, to be wrapped up in mother’s cloth while it rained. Every time it rained” (64). Millions of Africans can identify with Sissie’s emotional and psychological yearning and connection to a mother’s akatado. For the embrace and care of a mother is like no other on this earth. However, as important as the connection to a mother’s akatado, there is nothing that compares to our heavenly Father’s presence and covering. His akatado is His tabernacle, His wings, His shadow, His blood, His word. When we enter into His presence, there is not only a palpable sense of liberation in the atmosphere, but there is also catharsis and healing. And beyond these benefits, gates and windows are opened unto us, only to pour out blessings which we are unable to contain. So I say, Oo to be in my Father’s house. In joy, sadness and every condition of life, where else would I want to be? Nothing can replace this space. So I continue to sing that song, no longer pushing it back, no longer resisting it, for I know the truth of it. Yes, I will go into my Father’s presence where there is liberty and joy.

“We just want to say thank you for all the wonderful work you do to protect the community like providing security, maintaining law and order and ensuring safety”, were the words of Bishop Kofi Adonteng-Boateng as he spoke in his capacity as an International Police Chaplain in the United States (US) during his visit to the Franconia County District Police (FCDP) on October 20, 2017.

Bishop Adonteng-Boateng was accompanied by members of his church; Divine Word International Ministries (DWIM), said the visit was to express appreciation for the exemplary work the police was doing in the community. He was met by Captain Michael F. Grinnan; Commander of the Franconia District Police Station.

The late Friday morning visit by the Bishop was a successful one during which the Bishop flashed back to a September 2016 and 2017 visits respectively to his church by some members of the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD): “your visits to our church is very much appreciated, so is your work in the community” said the Bishop, who felt this visit was his own small way of making the police know they are appreciated.

In an interview with TheAfricanDream.net at the Bishop said “during the FCPD visit to our church, a majority of the members who are Africans and from Ghana saw them in a very friendly light. Their education, interaction and especially dancing at our church has gone viral online, (video here https://bit.ly/2ioo42y), making people in the community wonder where such cool and friendly cops come from.”

“Yeah I saw that video myself too” said Commander Grinnan, saying the reason his officers felt OK mingling with the DWIM congregation is because “it’s the way we train our officers, we train them to be interactive, we try to build good relationships between communities and that’s what we are supposed to do.”

Commander Grinnan, however, said he couldn’t take credit for everything, saying 2nd Lieutenant Tim Forrest who led the team to DWIM last September, his colleagues who accompanied him, and the entire FCPD is responsible for such professionalism and deserve credit too.

Master Police Officer Allie Eggers said “when we do come out and we do fellowship with you, we are there to embrace you guys, your community, and your culture. We do feel blessed to see people smiling… and for me, it is a good positive experience that I will never forget.”

DWIM members at the end of the visit were led by the Bishop to pray for the police officers. Afterwards, the Bishop promised the strengthening of his church’s relationship with the FCPD by suggesting the church and police participate in the distribution of items the church is collecting for donation to the needy come Christmas 2017.

FCPD is located at 6121 Franconia Road in Alexandria, Virginia, US. The Franconia district could be reached via email address FranconiaStationCPO@fairfaxcounty.gov or phone number +1-703-922-0889. African Immigrant Population In U.S. Steadily Climbs

Page

BY MONICA ANDERSON

African immigrants make up a small share of the nation’s immigrant population, but their overall numbers are growing – roughly doubling every decade since 1970, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. There were 2.1 million African immigrants living in the United States in 2015, up from 881,000 in 2000 and a substantial increase from 1970 when the U.S. was home to only 80,000 foreign-born Africans. They accounted for 4.8% of the U.S. immigrant population in 2015, up from 0.8% in 1970.

The growth is evident among recently arrived immigrants. When compared with other major groups who arrived in the U.S. in the past five years, Africans had the fastest growth rate from 2000 to 2013, increasing by 41% during that period. (Africans are also a fastgrowing segment of the black immigrant population in the U.S., increasing by 137% from 2000 to 2013.)

The transatlantic slave trade beginning in the 16th century brought hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans to the U.S., but significant voluntary migration from Africa is a relatively new trend.

One factor behind this recent wave can be traced to the Refugee Act of 1980, which made it easier for those fleeing conflict-ridden areas, like Somalia and Ethiopia, to resettle in the U.S. Back then, less than 1% of all refugee arrivals were from Africa, compared with 37% in fiscal 2016, according to figures from the U.S. State Department’s Refugee Processing Center. Statistics from the Yearbook of Immigration Statistics confirm this point. Among the top 10 countries by refugee arrival in 2015, four were in Africa: Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Eritrea. (The data in this analysis predates executive action on immigration in early 2017.) African immigrants from the sub-Saharan region are also more likely than immigrants overall to enter the U.S. through the diversity visa program – an act passed in 1990 to encourage immigration from underrepresented nations. This legislation was initially intended to boost the number of Europeans migrating to the U.S., but many Africans have also benefited from the initiative.

Foreign-born Africans come from all over the continent, but the largest countries of origin for African immigrants are Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Ghana and Kenya. These five countries accounted for half of the foreign-born African population in the U.S in 2o15.

African immigrants to the U.S. are more likely to settle in the South (39%) or the Northeast (25%), than in the Midwest (18%) or West (17%), while the largest numbers of African immigrants are found in Texas, New York, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Virginia. Each of these states is home to at least 100,000 foreign-born Africans.

In other states, Africans represent a higher percentage of the foreignborn population than the national average. Fueled by the state’s sizable Somalian-born community, 21% of Minnesota’s foreign-born population is from Africa. Many refugees from Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia have settled in South Dakota (Ethiopians are the largest immigrant group overall there). Africans make up around 15% of South Dakota’s foreign-born population. They also account for a substantial share of the overall immigrant population in several other areas, some examples being Maryland, North Dakota, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Note: This is an update of a post originally published Nov. 2, 2015.

Monica Anderson is a research associate focusing on internet, science and technology at Pew Research Center.

National Demographics In 1960, African immigrants represented only 0.4 percent of the total immigrant population, compared to nearly 4 percent today. There are 1.5 million African immigrants currently living in the United States, representing approximately 4 percent of the total foreign born population in 2009. In 2009, 41.7 percent of African-born adults ages 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 28.1 percent of native-born adults and 26.8 percent of all foreign-born adults. During the past fifty years, the number of African immigrants in the U.S. has significantly increased from 35,355 in 1960 to 1.5 million in 2010. At the national level, the top countries of origin of African immigrants are: Nigeria (14.1%), Ethiopia (9.9%), Egypt (9.3%), Ghana (7.3%), and Kenya (5.8%). Source:https://oaa.dc.gov/node/111192

On Saturday, October 21st 2017, he met another section of the community, Amansie Kuo, on the behest of the association’s leadership to attend its annual fundraising dinner held in the Bronx.

Mr. Emmanuel Adu Gyamfi, president of the association, revealed that the association’s mission included funding schools, hospitals, and other community projects in Amansie and its surrounding towns in the district. The fundraiser was therefore to honor that purpose.

The president of the association was intrigued by His Excellency’s good intentions and actions which demystify the office of the Consul General by giving audience to the members of the community it serves without having to go through unnecessary bureaucracies and protocols. On his part, the Consul General thanked the association for performing its social responsibility with excellence.

The Consul General was at a separate event earlier in the week, where he was invited to be a guest of honor at the Ghanaian Hotel Workers Association inaugural dinner dance, as he continues to give meaning to his interactive work model and deepen his relationship with the Ghanaian community at large.

He reiterated President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision to industrialize the economy and urged the hotel workers to project the positive image of Ghana to the people they come into contact with at their various workplaces that will attract investors to Ghana.

In particular, Professor Samuel Amoako urged the audience to take advantage of the president’s initiatives, including One District, One Factory, One Village One Damn, and the Zongo Development projects and invest in them and in the hospitality industry. This, he argued are the key areas that will boost the capacity of the private sector as the engine of growth and produce jobs for the teeming unemployed youth.

In his final remarks, the Consul General broke the news to his audience about a new policy instrument in the offing for the Ghanaian family that will formalize the dual Citizenship status of Ghanaian children born in the United States.

He assured the communities of his preparedness to engage them to better serve them.

When he reached the gate, the security man in-charge told him that it is already late and nobody is allowed to enter there. The minister got very angry and fumed at the man (“Do you know who I am?”) While pulling out his ID card and hurriedly pushed his way in leaving the security man puzzled. After a few minutes, the minister was heard crying (“Gate-man….gate-man the bees are killing me….please come and help me please…!”)The man simply replied (“May be they don’t know who you are…..just show them your ID card..!!!”)

Joke: Sharp Mum

A mom visits her son for dinner who lives with a girl as a roommate. During his meal, his mother couldn’t help but notice how pretty his roommate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between the two and this had only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there’s more between him and his roommate. Reading his mom’s thought, his son volunteered, “I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, we are just roommates.” About a week later, his roommate came to him saying, “Ever since your mother came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the silver plate. You don’t suppose your mother took it,do you? He said, “Well I doubt it, but I’ll email her just to be sure!” He sat down and wrote,

Dear mom,

After your visit me, the silver plate has been missing.

Akpos Joke: Bag of Money

Akpos boy found a bag of money and called an FM radio station saying…

Akpos: Hello, I found a lost bag with $700,000.00, an ID card and a master card belonging to one Mr Victor James, Plot 4 Park View Estate, Ikoyi.

Presenter: You are such an honest boy! So, I believe you want to return the bag?

Akpos: No! Am I crazy? For what? I just want to dedicate a song to him. Play me, “MY HELPER OOO…

I’m not saying that you did take the silver plate from my house, and I’m not saying that you don’t take it, but the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner. Love, Your son.

Several days later, he received an email from his mother which read: Dear Son,

I’m not saying that you do sleep with your roommate, and I’m not saying that you don’t sleep with her: but the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the silver plate by now, under her pillow. Love,

Kenyan High Court Reinstates Moi Day as a Public Holiday

Zimbabwe Renames Harare Airport After Robert Mugabe

Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace unveiled the plaque with his name at the airport

Harare International Airport has been renamed after Zimbabwe's current President, Robert Mugabe.

Transport Minister Joram Gumbo justified the decision on the grounds that Mr Mugabe was a "war hero" and "African icon". There is tension about who will succeed the man in power since 1980, with a number of key contenders removed from their posts. Mr Mugabe, 93, says he will stand for re-election next year. His wife Grace has been tipped to succeed him and is expected to be appointed vicepresident.

When plans to rename the airport were announced in September, Zimbabwean journalist Elias Mambo suggested the president's ego was being "massaged".

President Mugabe and his wife unveiled the new plaque bearing his name in a short simple ceremony.

The name change is just one of a series of events planned by the government to pay tribute the man who led the country to independence.

In August, the government announced plans to build a $1bn university named after him. But the BBC's Shingai Nyoka in Harare says Zimbabweans are divided over the name change at the airport, and the opposition has described it as an insult. President Mugabe thanked the government on behalf of his family, which he said "is not just my wife and the children it is the whole country".

True Worshippers 2017 Gala Dinner & Fundraiser

November

True Worshippers held their first Gala Dinner and Fundraiser event on October 21,2017 in Alexandria, Virginia. True Worshippers, which was founded by Yaw Osei -Owusu in 2009, has evolved from a ministry into a worldwide movement. Centered around love and Christian faith and values, True Worshippers has developed initiatives to not only spread the word and love of Christ through concerts and forums, but through programs that exemplify true brotherly love. During the Gala Dinner and Fundraiser, True Worshippers flawlessly shared with the attendees their story of where they have been and their future hopes and dreams. True Worshippers shared informative videos with the attendees, throughout the night, which were cleverly interlaced with the evening’s events. The Gala Dinner and Fundraiser was a fun filled event where everything from two South African Airways plane tickets to extravagant gift baskets were auctioned off. Aside from creating branches in Ghana. and Australia to spread the gospel, True Worshippers is also focusing on the overall well-being of their fellow brothers and sisters. True Worshippers has created a buddy mentorship-like program, which connects people with mentors, and they have also initiated a baby shower event to aid single expectant mothers. True Worshippers is truly practicing what they preach but offering support to others. The True Worshippers Gala Dinner and Fundraiser was truly an inspirational and magnificent event.

Yaw Osei-Owusu President and Founder of True Worshippers

According to Yaw Osei Wusu ‘ Last Saturday was amazing! Great program, awesome food, nice band and the right people came around. We did not reach our Facebook Live Goal, but we reached the personal goal I set last year with God in Atlanta. On Saturday through donations that came through on Sunday we raised $20,000 for the org to continue the great work. We were looking for a theme to carry the night so we gave it the name drive to 25... but in my journal and prayer list I just wanted 20k by December to help this ministry do more to help people, and God did just that. I took a screen shot of me sharing with the team what I wanted God to do for us throughout the year of 2017... In October God has done it all.... As Kelvin Wiredu says, we are walking into the realm where there are no more miracles just God being God and us not being taken by surprise lol. Any one that gave through social media or on that day, may God bless you. ‘ Deborah Guariglia Droke Director, Sales Development at South African Airways

WHY PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT MUST INVEST IN REAL ESTATE

I am a 2nd generation of an African descent living overseas and over the years I have realized that the first generation of African descent has a myopic way of thinking and doing things. As a Realtor, I have come across a number of scenarios that I feel burdened and overwhelmed to address. One of the attributes I have encountered is “IGNORANCE”. Of course scripture does say that “for lack of knowledge my people perish” and indeed most Africans are perishing because of the symptom of ignorance. What I have been trying to wrap my mind around is when you lay the foundation and educate one about the benefits of buying a real estate property in America, they are quick to say “I am concentrating on my project back home where I will spend my golden years!” Over and over I keep hearing this statement. Yet, I have seen people go back home and come back to America in a twinkle of an eye. When I asked the reason for their sudden return back to America, the laundry list of things that drove them back to America goes on and on. Most go back home to find their project in shamble, or the monies that were sent home have been used by their relative (s) for other things; or sadly they go home and tragically die and not even enjoy the fruits of their labor. You know the stories. It puzzles me that we have not learned anything from these atrocious stories. We continue to perpetuate this cycle. Imagine if you had invested in real estate here in America, you would have greatly reaped the benefits. Here are a few things to consider. You would have gone back home and come back to your real estate property in whole to enjoy, or you could have enjoyed rental income from the real estate property in America while living overseas or you could have sell and cashed out the equity on your real estate in America as you venture off to motherland. You see real estate investment in America is a win-win coin for you. The other side of the issue that troubles me is that our parents have failed to recognize that their decision for not investing has impacted the younger generation. We find it difficult to keep par with our peers who are non-Africans. Most of our peers graduate with minimum or no student loans because their parents were able to use their home equity to support their college education. Furthermore,

our peers tend to get ahead of us because they have the luxury of living with their parents after college and as a result they are able to purchase their own first home and other things that give them an edge over us. Most importantly, our parents have failed to recognize that "us” the 2nd, 3rd etc…generations, the chances of us going back to motherland to acquire or posse your properties are slim. We ask that you keep the investment(s) here so we (your children, grand children, great grand children) can enjoy your labor. Mommy, Daddy, Uncle, Aunt; the younger generation is crying out loud that you wake up and begin to realize that America is the land of opportunities and investment through home ownership is part of the deal that drove you from motherland to this great country you live in and now call “home”. When we see you investing or owning a property, it gives us something to look up to and the will to achieve greater things. It is no longer about you and going back to motherland; it’s about investing in our future so we can also enjoy all that America has to offer. I will leave you with this to ponder; scripture says “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children.” So as you start thinking of this, I urge you to start planning and start dreaming. The American dream is achievable and attainable. Imagine that! Stay tuned for the next article which will provide a step by step guide on how to achieve the American dream through home ownership. Blessings in full portion! For more information about your real estate needs (buying, selling, leasing/renting a house) call me at 571-229-6694 and I will help you get started. Thank you.

by the President Akufo-Addo government in September 2017 is indeed sustainable.

Embassy officials in attendance were Stella Ansah of Trade Department, Akosua Badoo of the Diaspora Desk, Eric Boateng of Political Desk and Akosua Okyere-Badoo who is Minister of Economic and Diaspora affairs. The others are Joseph Ngminebayihi (Head of Consular and Welfare) and Stella Akosua Ansah (Head of Trade & Investment).

“Free SHS sustainable,” says Ambassador Agyei-Barwuah to Harford County Maryland

“If Free SHS wasn’t sustainable it wouldn’t have been started at all. You have to recognize that we have had free education from birth to university in the Northern part of Ghana all these years and it has been sustainable… I think as a nation we should owe everybody education at least up to the age of 16 to make the person either good enough to continue or good enough to contribute to the national economy. This is because reading and writing is crucial no matter how you look at it” — Ambassador Agyei-Barwuah.

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States (U.S.) His Excellency (H.E.) Dr. Barfour Agyei-Barwuah was the special guest at the diaspora engagement town hall meeting held in the Harford County Maryland, U.S. by Ghanaians in the area. At the meeting, the Ambassador interacted with Ghanaian members of Edgewood, Columbia, and Baltimore communities in Maryland on October 29, 2017.

In his continued assurance the Ambassador gave his word at the town hall meeting that a lot of measures have been put in place to sustain Free SHS education including income from Ghana’s oil revenues. He called on all in Ghana to meet and respect their tax obligations as their personal contribution to the continued success of that government policy.

Mr. Ameyaw said the event was a great success: “GUA executives are all impressed and so are Ghanaians in other parts of Maryland that were able to attend. We are very grateful to the Ambassador and his staff for making time to sit with us, we hope to work together with them to see Ghana move forward and become the nation we all want it to be.”

Other Executives of GUA include Dr. Wilfred Addo-Asah – Vice Chairman, Douglas Okyere – Secretary, Kwabena Antwi – Treasurer, Anita Frimpong – Financial Secretary, Kwadwo Adade – Organizing Secretary and Franklin Tsiquaye – Porter.
