Family's Generosity to AU Spans Three Generations Although Ed H. Winton Jr. and Jo Evans Winton always cancelled each other’s votes at the polls, they agreed 100 percent on supporting the mission and ministry of Africa University. Their interest was piqued by their daughter Lisa Tichenor, who now chairs the AU Tennessee corporation board. Recently, Jo Winton ensured her family’s love for Africa University would continue. The $150,000 Jo Evans Winton and Ed H. Winton Jr. scholarship endowment will benefit international undergraduate women studying agriculture at AU. With the current gift, investment in Africa University spans three generations of the family. “The generosity of the Winton and Tichenor families is quite literally changing the face of Africa and we are delighted to have them as friends of Africa University,” said James Salley, associate vice chancellor for institutional advancement.

The Wintons’ marriage was a genuine partnership, noted Chris Winton, Lisa’s brother. “They left Lisa and me examples of honesty, integrity in interpersonal relationships and making sacrifices for their family,” he said. Both Lisa and Chris are grateful for their family’s partnership with Africa University. “Dad loved being able to help people successfully manage the financial aspect of their businesses and see them prosper,” Chris Winton said. “He made agricultural loans that fueled the economic growth of the community. “He would be very happy, as Mom is, to see their names associated with a scholarship such as the one being provided by their gift to Africa University."

Challenge Gift Accelerates Giving to EOC Campaign Two longstanding advocates for Africa University, Rev. Dr. Bill and Mrs. Marty McFadden, are inspiring accelerated giving to the East Ohio Conference's Teach • Reach • Bless (TRB) campaign with a generous challenge gift of $250,000. Every $3 gifted to the campaign generates $1 from the McFaddens to help increase on-campus housing for female students. The match applies to all TRB campaign gifts made in 2021. “Marty and I are passionate about getting the dorm at AU built soon. We know that making a place for 90 women will result in a safe and transforming experience for them over the years. Graduates of AU are

making an incredible impact in Africa and around the world,” said McFadden. About one year after the campaign's public launch in January 2020, the conference met its $1.5 million commitment goal. “I am joyfully overwhelmed by the conference-wide support for building a dormitory for women at Africa University...To each person and each congregation that has made a financial commitment to our Teach • Reach • Bless campaign, I say, ‘thank you!’ Your generosity will change lives,” said Bishop Tracy S. Malone. As of May 31, the EOC had collected more than 57 percent of the $1.5 million needed to construct the dormitory.

AU Board Elects New Chancellor Bishop Gaspar João Domingos of West Angola is now the Chancellor-Elect of Africa University. The Africa University Board of Directors elected Domingos to the role in March. "Bishop Gaspar Domingos’ commitment to higher education and his lived knowledge of the African context will be a blessing to the work and vision of Africa University," said Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño, acting AU Board Chair. "There is no doubt that he will carry forth the excellent leadership of the Chancellors of this great institution who have come before him," said Carcaño. Domingos' inauguration is scheduled for July 2021, alongside Africa University’s 27th graduation ceremony. Both events will be virtual.

Vaccinations Underway Africa University’s students, faculty and staff began accessing the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine on April 21, through a collaboration between the Bishop Alfred Norris Health Center on campus, the Old Mutare Mission Hospital, and the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Welfare. Two additional vaccine clinics offering first doses to campus residents were held in May. The university’s primary health insurance partner, CIMAS, is offering free access to the vaccine to all its members..
