AU Board Reaches Out to Zimbabwe Churches

Work Begins on Campus Sports Complex

In March, the AU Board of Directors broke ground for the construction of a swimming pool. At completion in June, the pool will be about half the length of an 82’ x 72’,facility, Olympic-size but with provision for expansion. It is the first project in a multiphase construction plan for a sports complex on the main campus in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Construction is being funded by a $ 331,000 gift, given by the Baltimore Washington Conference as a love offering honoring Bishop Marcus Matthews for his leadership and service.

Mrs. Tichenor, who first learned about Africa University’s mission as a 1988 delegate to General Conference, co-chaired the North Texas Conference campaign that raised $ million. That gift funded the con1 struction of the Bishop Alfred Norris Health Clinic at Africa University and endowed scholarships in Health Sciences. In March 2017, Tichenor announced a $2 million gift to AU from Highland Park UMC. This gift is funding the expansion of a student union building and the construction of a new dormitory on the campus. Tichenor serves as the chair of the Africa University (Tennessee) Board of Directors. The launch event dinner was held in conjunction with first-ever meetings of the school’s board of directors and its Advisory Development Committee in South Carolina.
