Keeping the Promises of Brown Vs. Board of Education Amidst New Age of Inequality & Separation

To Our Fallen Military Women Today it was my privilege to join my colleagues from the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues in laying a wreath in honor and tribute to all of America’s fallen women. After we have placed the wreath, each member placed a single longstemmed rose on the edge of the reflecting pool in personal tribute to these women. The petals from these roses will be used in the Women’s Memorial 17th annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 26th.

Since the Memorial’s dedication in 1997, rose petals have been placed in the reflecting pool in memory of America’s fallen, starting with those servicewomen who have been lost since the previous Memorial Day. Ceremony participants and members of the public came together in visible tribute for this signature event.

It is gratifying to know that something from this ceremony is carried forward and incorporated into such a meaningful program here at the Women’s Memorial on the day when we come together as a nation to honor our fallen from all wars.

159 military women have lost their lives in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I am honored each year to attend this ceremony and acknowledge the courage and heroism of servicewomen who have made the ultimate sacrifice to save their comrades and others. For our servicewomen in Afghanistan and Iraq will have no Mother’s Day brunches from them, no hugs from their kids. Their assignment, like most of what we ask of our service members, is extremely difficult and tough on their family.

I had the honor of speaking a few words to honor the women that have lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq. Every woman in our Military is adamant that they are there because they believe their presence will improve our own national

security and the security of their children. Many servicewomen have lost their lives in protection of our own. We have to continue to make sure they know how we appreciate their service – that we realize their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families if they do not return home.

While it is important to pay tribute to our fallen servicewomen, their families and, all who have served our country with words, we also must honor them with our actions. The challenges and needs of service members and veterans may vary, but some things remain constant: our responsibility to provide the necessary care for our returning service members and their families honors the commitment our nation made when we sent them into harm’s way. We cannot waiver on that front.

Much was made about the UCLA Civil Rights Project study released on the eve of the 60th anniversary May 17 commemorative celebrations of the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation decision.

The study found that the legions of school districts in the South, West and North are more segregated than at the time of the Brown decision.

But studies like this that have found that many school districts that have re-segregated have been numerous over the past two decades.

The studies all have one added thing in common: the students in these schools are poorer than students in predominantly, or exclusively white schools. They do far worse in reading and math tests than non-black or black students at racially mixed schools. The black and Latino students who attend racially isolated schools are not in these schools because of Jim Crow segregationist laws, or failed school bussing policies. Two decades of pro-integration court decisions, limited bussing programs, civil rights legislation, and the election and the appointment of soaring numbers of blacks and Latinos to boards of education have racially remade public education. Black and Latino public school superintendents and top administrators are now fixtures in most urban school districts.

The blame for the chronic school re-segregation is the deep persistence of housing discrimination, poverty, and the near universal refusal of federal and state courts to get involved in any more school desegregation cases. The Supreme Court put the cap on the court’s role as a facilitator of integration in 2007 when it struck down school bussing plans in Seattle and Louisville. Then there’s the

continuing flight of white, as well as black and Latino middle-income persons, to the suburbs. This ensures that even more poor black and Latino students will be perpetually trapped in segregated schools.

The hodgepodge of panaceas that conservatives delight in ladling out to raise minority achievement levels include school vouchers, a wholesale dump of incompetent teachers and bureaucrats, magnet schools and annual testing. Some districts advocate scrapping race altogether and using income and other indicators as the means to achieve racially balanced schools. However, even in the school districts where they have been tried, the results have been mixed. There are many low achieving students in charter, and magnet schools, as well as schools that have opened the doors to school voucher plans just as in some public schools.

Even if the Supreme Court had upheld the Louisville and Seattle integration plans some years ago, it still wouldn’t have changed the racial picture for most urban school districts. The bitter truth is that while segregated public schools will never again be the law of the land, they remain a fact of the land, and the overwhelming majority of black and Latino students will be stuck in segregated schools. And in those schools that appear to be racially integrated there’s less than meets the eye. Studies show huge gaps in the treatment of black and Latino students by teachers and administrators. They are more likely to be piled in special education and vocation classes, and suspended or expelled at far higher rates than white students.

This points to the second problem that civil rights advocates and politicians refuse to acknowledge. It’s that even segregated schools don’t have to be inherently failing schools. There are countless examples where teachers and administrators have rolled up their sleeves and worked hard to transform racially segregated schools from permanent monuments to educational failure to models of success.

During his latest interview, Sterling said. “That’s one problem I have. Jews, when they get successful, they will help their people, and some of the African-Americans -- maybe I’ll get in trouble again -they don’t want to help anybody...,” Where can it go from here. We MUST Understand that it is really not about Donald Sterling or Magic Johnson.

It is about real Black men and real Black women looking in the mirror and asking ourselves is it time for Black America to do a self analysis on itself and be honest enough to ask ourselves have we done enough?

There are indeed a number of successful Blacks in government, business, education, holding public offices and serving as CFO’s and CEO. Are we in the fight for civil rights equality. Are we pacesetters and trailblazers or turtles on the fence post?

During the early days of the civil rights movement, the overall attitude existed that what happened to one African-American happens to all and affects all of us.

The sense was that AfricanAmericans were all connected from Rosa Parks incident involving taking a seat at the front of the bus to the criminal lynching of African Americans, the bombing of a church

in Birmingham Alabama that killed four Black children, the freedom marches and the struggles to vote across the South.

That sense of brotherhood sparked the civil rights movement and resulted in a number of gains that led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

We have not communicated that same brotherhood and same urgency to the current generation and that failure does leave Black America in a very precarious situation.

The talk must go from the shade tree, the water cooler and church fellowship halls to the streets. Failing to take a stand and fight means Black America is facing a fall that could mean our own eventual self termination and extermination as a people.

We MUST Understand to overcome racism AfricanAmericans must use its own resources from the community to rebuild neighborhoods and forge economic growth.

It is time for Black people to help each other move toward independence and self empowerment.

We cannot blame anyone for failure but who we see standing in that mirror. We have the talent, skills and resources to help ourselves and that is where building our future lies.

Regaining the edge and controlling the destiny of AfricanAmerican communities is linked to recapturing the freedom spirit, preserving the fight for liberty and justice for all and planting seeds of hope in the hearts of young people.

African-Americans are in control of their own destiny and need to unite and rethink strategy and refocus on priorities for the community.

After developing that plan hold community meetings and demand every elected officials and business leaders attend in an effort help them understand what the organized plan of action for the community.

Community leaders, preachers and officials all must be on the same page, be involved and understand that the same thing it took to get our freedoms is the same thing it takes to keep it.

Armed with action plans and a united effort, African-Americans should consider returning to the days of Civil Rights movement, boycotts, protests and making noise in order to demand the kinds of changes that will revive us and rewrite the current future projections for Black people.

It is time for another Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall.

We MUST Understand that our selfish attitudes must change about making it and getting as much as possible for self. It is time to make sacrifices for the good of all our people.

Real Leaders stand up and challenge the people to pick up the torch and start trends that will pave the way for more activism and re-ignite the fight for change and under gird those fighting issues in the political realm and the workplace.

Jannotti, 673 F.2d 578, 614 (3d Cir. 1982) HOUSTON- Open Season: A period when restrictions on the hunting of certain types of wildlife are lifted. A period when all restrictions on a particular activity or product are abandoned or ignored.

It is a term with definitions and statistics that should cause shock and great alarm in Black America.

A Black person is killed at the hands of police or vigilante security force every 26 hours somewhere in America, according to a report update by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) - Nearly one Black person every day in 2014!!!

It is an clear indication that is it “open season” on Black people and police appear to have found rich “killing” fields in Texas, Louisiana, California, New York, Florida and Illinois.

“Don’t be fooled or lulled into thinking that this doesn’t affect you,” said Kali Akuno, organizer of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. “It’s hunting season on Blacks. We are being shot and TX- 4

killed at alarming rates and that is a fact that cannot be wished away or prayed away.”

The study, Operation Ghetto Storm: 2012 Annual Report on the Extrajudicial Killings of 313 Black People by Police, Security Guards, and Vigilantes, was completed in 2012, and revealed that a Black person was then shot down in cold blood somewhere in the United States every 28 hours.

“Operation Ghetto Storm” follows the trail of extrajudicial killings to the rise of militarized police forces and their occupation of Black communities,” Akuno said.

“It explores how systemic racism has led to increased militarization and repression, which in turn has exacerbated the human rights crises devastating Black communities.”

The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, an antiracist grassroots activist organization. The organization has chapters in Atlanta, Detroit, Fort Worth-Dallas, Jackson, New Orleans, New York City, Oakland, and Washington, D.C. It has a history of organizing campaigns against police brutality and state repression in black and brown communities.

The group uses information from police and media reports along with other publicly available

information to do the report. The 2011 report showed that a black person was killed by security forces every 36 hours.

THE PROBLEM Even more shocking are the tracking of 2013 and 2014 numbers.

Akuno said the results are shaping up to be just as chilling because the numbers are on the rise, and current 2014 numbers appear to be trending higher to one Black person killed by law enforcement about every 24 to 26 hours, he said.

Texas leads the nation in the killing of Blacks with 29 in this report. Other states with high number of killings by police include: Florida, 26; Illinois, 25; New York, 24; California, 23; Georgia, 22; and Louisiana, 17.

With the incidents of police shooting and even killing Black citizens in Texas cities, Black Freedom fighters express great concern for the future of the community given the increasing frequency of attacks.

The vast majority of the time, police officers, security guards, or armed vigilantes who extrajudicially kill black people escape accountability.

National and Community Activist Deric Muhammad said the main issue is justice and its unbalanced scales that fail to protect and serve citizens. He is calling for stronger accountability now before it is too late.

“The future of America’s greatness is in jeopardy because of injustice. Rome, Babylon, Biblical Egypt and other nations were brought to their knees for the same reason,” he said. “In America there are two types of police officers. You have those who wish to justly enforce the law and on the other hand you have “beasts with badges.”

These corrupt cops believe that we should obey the law, but that THE LAW SHOULD OBEY THEM. They murder and shoot us down in cold blood and receive a paid vacation for it.”

Statistics from the report are eye opening and should heighten the concern of any Black parent raising children and give some insight into the hostile environment Blacks live in in America.

PRIME TARGETS

According to information from the 2012 report, of the 313 killed, 124 or (40%) were between 22 and 31 years old, 57 or (18%) were between 18 and 21 years old, 54 or (17%) were between 32 and 41 years old, 32 or (10%) were 42 to 51 years old, 25 or (8%) were children younger than 18 years old, 18 (6%) were older than 52, and 3 (1%) were of unknown ages.

MENTAL HEALTH A significant portion of those killed, 68 people or (22%), suffered from mental health issues and/or were self-medicated.

Such was the case of Michael Garrett Blair, a 26-year-old African American man who had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. On November 4, 2013, Blair, who had never had any episodes of violence, unexpectedly locked himself in the bathroom of his family’s home in Richmond, Texas and threatened to commit suicide. His mother, Kimberly Blair-Olaniyi, called around to several mental health hospitals seeking assistance, but those facilities told her to call 9-1-1. She called 9-1-1, and informed them of the situation and of her son’s mental illness and that she just wanted help for him.

Rather than get the needed assistance, Fort Bend County Sheriffs Deputy ended up shooting Blair 11 times and killing him right there in front of the family. A hidden video tape released recently reveals the troubling last minutes of Blair’s life.

Akuno said this means police saw a person who looked or behaved “suspiciously” largely because of their skin color and attempted to detain the suspect before killing them.

Other times, the shootings occurred during a criminal investigation (24%), after 9-1-1 calls from “emotionally disturbed loved ones” (19%) or because of domestic violence (7%), or innocent people were killed for no reason (7%).

Jordan Baker, 26-year old Black male, was killed by off-duty Houston Police officer Juventino Castro, an 11-yr vet assigned to Narcotics Division.

Castro who was working security at a strip shopping center.

He allegedly saw Baker allegedly looking into windows of various businesses, and asked for his ID. Baker said he didn’t have any, and began walking away. Castro tried to stop him, a struggle ensued.

Tax Information Session Provides Tips/Options on Protecting Property

HOUSTON-African-American homeowners in the Third Ward got a crash course in understanding property taxes and how to stay protected from the tax axe.

The 2014 protest deadline for most owners of real property in Harris County is June 2nd. The filing deadline for business personal property and real property accounts sent value notices after May 1 is 30

days from the date the notice was mailed.- was one of many topics discussed at the information session.

The seminar was held at Emancipation Park Community Center and was supported by the center and the Third Ward Community Cloth Cooperative’s Housing & Environment Thread.

Representatives from the Harris County Appraisal District

and Harris County Tax AssessorCollector’s Office were present to answer questions about the process.

“This was an opportunity to help people understand this important subject,” said Theola Petteway, spokesperson for the event. “Representatives from both entities made presentations and provided hands-on assistance to attendees addressing their specific problems.”

The Third Ward Community Cloth Cooperative is an “organization of organizations” focusing on resources for children and families in the greater Third Ward area.

The overall mission of the Third Ward Community Cloth Cooperative (the Cloth) is to identify, mobilize, unify, stabilize, create and coordinate resources to nurture and enhance the bodies, minds and spirits of children, youth and families in the greater Third Ward area. Organizations join together “to

weave a grassroots fabric to spread across the greater Third Ward community” to ensure adequate coverage for children and families.

Service like the property tax seminar provides much needed information for those who are having difficulty understanding tax laws.

Marsha Dorsey-Outlaw attended the information session for her parents and said the seminar was very beneficial in providing information about how to apply principles to individual tax situations.

“As adult child of homeowner in Third Ward, there are a lot of things the elderly and adult children should know to be responsible and responsive about keeping property in the family,” she said.

“More people need to know this information.”

To know the basic functions of the Criminal Justice system, your rights and certain rules of conduct may

greatly enhance one ‘s chances of successfully negotiating the system and remaining free.

PROBATION AND PAROLE Revocation of Community Supervision [1]-- Grounds for Revocation A defendant’s community supervision may be revoked if the state proves that he or she violated a condition of community supervision . The violation may be a failure to perform an act required by the terms of the community supervision order , or the commission of an act prohibited by the terms of community supervision, such as the commission of a criminal offense.

[2]-- Jurisdictional Requirements Only the court that granted community supervision or the court to which jurisdiction has been transferred may revoke community

supervision. If the state decides to seek revocation of the community supervision, the motion to revoke must be filed and the warrant or capias issued before the end of the community supervision period for the court to have jurisdiction to revoke community supervision. The mere issuance of a warrant or capias does not toll the running of the community supervision period.

If the motion to revoke is timely filed and a capias is timely issued, the court retains jurisdiction to revoke community supervision even though the hearing and revocation do not occur until after the period of community supervision has expired.

[3]-- Defendant’s Due Process Rights Because revocation of community supervision involves the loss of the defendant’s liberty, community

supervision may not be revoked without due process of law. The United States Supreme Court has held that the following minimum requirements of due process apply to revocation proceedings A written notice of the claimed violations 1. record’s failure to reflect written notice not violation of due process because defendant made no effort to clarify issue and claimed no denial of due process; 2. A disclosure to the defendant of evidence of each alleged violation 3. An opportunity to be heard and to present witnesses and documentary evidence 4. HOUSTON- It is a church that has brought sunshine to the Sunnyside community for decades and a group of believers whose key goals are serving Jesus Christ and the community.

It lets the light of Christ shine through a number of ministries. Two notable ones the church is very active in are the social ministries involving the Gabriel Project and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

The Gabriel Project The Gabriel Project is a pregnancy crisis support ministry that helps pregnant mothers in need.

It provides basic care items for their unborn babies such as diapers, wipes, clothing; and larger items like car seats, small baby beds and more.

It also coordinates their needs such as transportation for medical care, housing, food, and material needs. Our goal in this ministry is share the love of Christ and to help these women choose life for their unborn child.

Last year the program helped 11 moms through and this year we are already following 6 moms through the month of April, and for at least the first six months after their baby is born and in some cases up to a year.

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry The Food Pantry assists needy individuals and families in the community with non-perishable food items. In the month of April the Pantry served 34 households consisting of 74 individuals in the Sunnyside Community.

The church also has active ministries supporting Breast Cancer Awareness, Health ministries, prison ministries and disaster planning.

History During the years 1949 and 1950, His Excellency Wendelin J. Nold, the Bishop of the Diocese of Galveston was carrying out his plan to purchase properties in circling areas, each ten, fifteen, and twenty miles apart assuring that each church would have available space to expand.

survey was ordered late in the year 1949 and results indicated that there were thirty-five Catholic families in the area. His Excellence called Father Michael J. Flaherty, S.S.J., the pastor of Saint Nicholas Church, into his office and asked him to look for some property in the Sunnyside Community. Father Flaherty located several potential lots and it was decided to purchase five and one half acres of land on the southwest corner of Chocolate Bayou (Cullen) and Reed Road.

Negotiations began in June 1951 and were completed in August 1951. The purchase price of the land was $10, 316.00. The funds for the land were collectively furnished by Saint Nicholas Parish ($3,000.00) and the Negro and Indian Fund of the diocese ($7,316.00).

In 1951 the construction was started on a brick church that would seat two hundred and fifty people. The cost of the building was $29,000.00. The monies came from three major sources. A donation was made by The Society of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart in the amount of $10,000.00. The parishioners of Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Nicholas raised $9,000.00 and the remaining $10,000.00 was borrowed. The church was completed and dedicated in 1952.

Father James Clark, S.S.J. of Saint Nicholas, was assigned the first pastor of Saint Francis Xavier Church. Later the men of the church built a small parish hall. This hall served as a kindergarten, Sunday school classroom and a place for parish meetings. It was not until, 1956 that the rectory was built. This building would cost $34,441.00. Again, the money was borrowed from the Saint Joseph’s Society of the Sacred Heart at a 3% interest rate. The parish members paid off this debt in three years, plus the $10,000.00, which was owed to Saint Nicholas Church.

The congregation at Saint Francis Xavier was growing rapidly and within three years the number of parish members increased from three hundred to seventeen hundred. Over the years more and more families joined the parish. The increasing numbers brought a need for a larger parish hall and Catechetical Center.

Therefore, Father Elbert Harris, S.S.J., the first African-American pastor assigned to Saint Francis, implemented the plans to add the new building to the complex. The new hall would be used

for CCE classes and parish entertainment. The old building was renovated to serve as a Senior Citizen Nutrition Center.

Thirty-three years later, a magnificent new church that seated 500 replaced the original church. It was designed to include a special chapel that was dedicated to the Martyrs of Uganda. The new church would cost the parish members $335,000.00. The new building was completed and dedicated by Bishop John Morkovsky on June 19, 1975. Nine years later, a ceremony was held for the “Burning of the Mortgage? Representing final payment of the debt the parish had incurred for the building of the new hall and new church.

In the 1990’s the old church was renovated and made into classrooms for religious education. This building was dedicated to Father Elbert Harris and was named the “Harris Center.” Later, due to growth, the members were faced with a very emotional decision to change the church’s address from 9202 Cullen to 4600 Reed Road. After the decision was made, a new Harris Center building and rectory were built at no expense to the parish members or diocese.

Nearly half of African Americans have at least one risk factor for kidney disease, but less than 3% say they believe kidney disease is a “top health concern,” according to research released in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, the publication of the National Kidney Foundation.

According to the NKF, everyone who carries a risk factor for kidney disease - regardless of ethnicity must be screened for the disease, so we can catch it at its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective.

Over time, chronic kidney disease (CKD) can progress to the point where patients need a transplant or dialysis to survive.

Every year, 30,000 African Americans advance to that stage, called end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure. They are more than three times as likely to develop ESRD as Caucasians, and are more likely to carry the primary risk factors for CKD: diabetes, high blood pressure, and a family history of kidney failure.

African-Americans are less likely to have life-threatening complication under control, new study finds Among people diagnosed with kidney disease and high blood pressure, African-American men are least likely to have their blood pressure under control, putting them at risk of life-threatening complications, according to a study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, the official publication of the National Kidney Foundation.

The study included more than 10,000 people diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and high blood pressure, which can worsen CKD. Some research suggests that controlling high blood pressure may be the most important step in slowing the progression of CKD.

“African-Americans with CKD progress more quickly to kidney failure, at which point they must receive a kidney transplant or regular dialysis to survive,” says lead author O. Kenrik Duru, M.D. of the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles. “These findings suggest that their higher risk of kidney failure may stem, at least in part, from higher rates of uncontrolled high blood pressure.”

Furthermore, this finding suggests a way of protecting this vulnerable group from complications. “If African-American men are more likely to develop kidney failure because they are more likely to have uncontrolled high blood pressure, treating their high blood pressure more aggressively may also protect their kidneys,” adds Allan J. Collins, MD, study coauthor and past president, National Kidney Foundation.

Research has shown that African-Americans with CKD progress five times more quickly to end-stage renal disease, or kidney failure, than Caucasians. The investigators in the current report found that among people in early stages of CKD who also had high blood pressure, African-American men were least likely to have their blood pressure under control. Among people in later stages of CKD, both men and women of African descent were less likely than Caucasian men and women to have their high blood pressure under control.

HISD- The Houston Independent School District has been selected to receive a 2014 Gold Medallion Award from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) for its Special Communications Project/Campaign, “PowerUp Communications.”

NSPRA’s Gold Medallion Award is the highest award given by the association in recognition of outstanding school public relations programs. Judges look each year for special programs, projects, and campaigns that combine insightful assessment, detailed planning, creative communication, and careful evaluation.

Judges selected only seven winners from 31 entries this year, and HISD was chosen for its internal and external communications efforts surrounding PowerUp.

PowerUp is HISD’s comprehensive districtwide initiative to transform teaching and learning through digital-age instruction, technology, and personalization.

Communication efforts during the 2013-2014 school year focused on the distribution of more than 8,000 laptops to students at 11 high schools and the intense training of teachers on the use of technology to personalize instruction.

NSPRA Executive Director, Rich Bagin, APR, said of the PowerUp communication efforts, “People don’t always see the value of meeting students’ needs with technology, so Houston ISD developed an ambitious communications plan to explain how the goal of this districtwide initiative went far beyond providing computers to students. Through social

media, TV, parent workshops, teacher blogs, and many other communication tools, HISD has been able to garner positive media attention about how it is helping students become 21st centuryready through transformational, digital-age instruction.”

During the 2014-2015 school year, the one-to-one component of the PowerUp initiative is expanding to include an additional 21 high schools, and a pilot group of K-12 campuses will begin using an online teaching and learning and platform called the “HUB.” When fully implemented at all 282 schools during the 20152016 school year, the “HUB” will become the central location of collaboration, personalization, curriculum, instruction, and communication for all HISD staff, students, and parents.

GED Graduation Speaker Overcomes Tragedy

North Harris. The recent graduate of the LSC-North Harris GED program experienced a personal tragedy that became the motivation for a new career and the ongoing pursuit of her education.

Peppers-Hernandez’s passion for caring developed after suffering a heartbreaking loss. In 1982, her son developed cerebral palsy at the age of five months, due to spinal meningitis. After his diagnosis, he endured multiple doctor visits each week, until he passed away at the age six.

“Two years after his death I decided to get into the medical

field, so that I would be able to continue helping the sick and those unable to help themselves,” said Peppers-Hernandez.

In 1992, she began her career in healthcare as a medical assistant, but without a diploma or GED knew her career was limited.

“I had a good job, but I couldn’t make really move up and make more money,” said Peppers-Hernandez. “I needed more education to get to the next level.”

Ultimately, in the fall of 2013, Peppers-Hernandez took the leap and enrolled in an Adult Education GED course offered at the LSC-

The Houston Chapter of The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) Provides Energy Voice from Black Perspective

HOUSTON-The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) is a national association of energy professionals founded and dedicated to ensure the input of African Americans and other minorities into the discussions and developments of energy policies regulations, R&D technologies, and environmental issues.

In Houston, the association is lead by Terry H. Stringer, who serves as President of the Houston Chapter of American Association of Blacks in Energy.

According to information from the organization website, The Houston Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE©) is one of eight chapters that comprise the Southwest Region of the organization.

It is headquartered in Texas, the energy capital of the U.S. Some of our member companies include: British Petroleum, CenterPoint Energy, Chevron, El Paso Corporation, Entergy, EPCO, Inc., Exxon-Mobil, GE Energy, Intellascent, and Shell (among others).

The Houston Chapter welcomes professionals from all energy and energy-related

disciplines (oil, gas, electricity, nuclear, renewable, government, technology, energy services, and water) to join the chapter.

According to Stringer, each of these disciplines provide our membership and community with a broader knowledge of the varied and unique aspects of the energy industry. Additionally, the organ encourages college students at accredited institutions who are studying in energy related fields; or planning to pursue careers in the energy industry to participate in AABE. The mission is to provide energy professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, and students a pathway to learn more about the energy industry through activities such as mentoring, education, community service and networking.

Stringer said the Houston Chapter is seeking members that can help us achieve our goal of impacting Houston and its surrounding communities.

Purpose of AABE®?

The purposes of the AABE® are the following: To serve as a resource for policy discussion of the economic, social and political impact of environmental

and energy policies on African Americans and other minorities.

To ensure involvement of African Americans in governmental energy policymaking by recommending capable, sensitive and informed personnel to appropriate officials.

To encourage both the public and private sectors to be responsive to the problems, goals and aspirations of African Americans in energy-related fields.

To encourage African American students to pursue careers in energy-related fields and to provide scholarships and other financial aid for such students.

Who joins AABE®?

Membership is open all people from the energy and environmental communities, including those entrepreneurs who are committed to the AABE® mission.

Is being an African American a requirement to join AABE®?

No, all races are welcome to join the organization. One of our main goals is to educate and to inform.
