His deep and abiding commitment to justice has made the world a better place.

I was first introduced to it at a golf tournament held here in the District of Columbia where copies were given to all the participants. Of course, I immediately subscribed.

I recently discovered the African American Golfer's Digest about a year or so ago, and I think this was a great idea. I am basically a beginner, although I started playing six years ago, but don't play as often as I would like. I am encouraged by the growing number of ‘sistas’ who are taking up the game. I plan to attend my first golf tournament this weekend to watch Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and others who are coming here to Charlotte. Anyhow, I just wanted to touch base with you and thank you for coming up with a golf magazine that focuses on the Back community.

In fall 2009 two out of three core golfers remain quite passionate about golf. Only 10% of Core golfers appear to be disenchanted with the game. Even one in four Occasional golfers (3.1 million players) are passionate. Therefore, we believe demand is stable.

There is plenty of available public golf. This is good for golfers, but bad for facility operators (dilution has cut their rounds about 20% over the past two decades) and oversupply has affected almost every facility – but 15% very seriously. 500-1,000 public courses are likely to close within the next five years which may help rebalance supply and demand. Well-managed courses in populated areas are the most likely to thrive. As with past recessions, golf demand should not suffer very much during the current economic slowdown.

FORMER PGA PRESIDENT BRIAN WHITCOMB APPOINTED BOARD MEMBER OF THE BILL DICKEY SCHOLARSHIP ASSOCIATION. PHOENIX, AZ, AUGUST 2010 – President Emeritus William “Bill” Dickey and the board of the directors of the Bill Dickey Scholarship Association, (BDSA) are honored to announce their newest member, former PGA President Brian Whitcomb.

Whitcomb, the PGA Honorary President, graduated from Arizona State University, with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1978. His golf career enabled him to gain insight into the game which helped him to develop, design and improve golf courses around the Valley. He has been a member of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) for over 20 years. Brian used his insight to develop and improve the association as President of the PGA from 2006-2008. He brings these same skills and acumen to his newest role in improving the lives of collegebound students from across the nation.

Over 1,000 students have received $2.8 million in scholarships through the BDSA. The scholarship requires a love for the sport of golf; a love both Brian and Bill Dickey share. Also a long time member of the PGA, Bill Dickey received the Distinguished Service Award from the PGA in 1999. Dickey has served the nation’s youth since 1984 when the BDSA was founded. He has been uniquely positioned to both promote the game of golf and assist students in pursuit of academic excellence.

GOLF’S ECONOMIC BENEFITS The golf industry provides 2 million jobs in the U.S. and total wage income of $61 billion.

The total economic impact of golf in America has been measured at $195 billion, including golf’s direct, indirect and induced impacts.

Golf provides a direct economic impact of $76 billion. The golf industry is larger than the motion picture and video business; larger than performing arts and spectator sports; and larger than the newspaper industry.

During her brief career she has earned a lifetime total of over 75 top 3 finishes and recently finished second place in Junior PGA Championship and earned a spot on the 2010 Jr. Ryder Cup Team, and will be playing Sept. 27-28 in Scotland at the Junior Ryder Cup to represent her country.

LPGA professional teacher and coach, Lee, is founder and executive director of the Dallas, T.X.-based Roaring Lambs International Junior Golf Academy, (est. 1986) as a charitable/educational entity dedicated to encouraging participation of multi-racial, inner-city youth in junior golf activities.

Lee has over twenty-five years of experience in improving the lives of young people through the game of golf and has taught golf at Twin wells Golf Course in Irving Texas, and at the Jim McLean Practice Range in Fort Worth.

Renee Powell (PGA/LPGA)

Legendary professional golfer and educator, Powell is Head Golf Professional at her Clearview Golf Club, East Canton, Oh., and one of only three African American women to have ever played for the Ladies' Professional Golf Association since its inception in 1950. Of those three, only Powell was able to become a Professional Class A member of both the LPGA and the PGA of America. She received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland - as the only female golf professional in its 600 year history.

SCORE Honors John Walton of O.K. Golf

SCORE helped O.K. Golf develop a marketing strategy, target recruitment of instructors for the program, and develop contracts for the instructors, who are all independent contractors.

Washington, D.C. — SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” honors John Walton, co-owner of O.K. Golf in Charleston, S.C., with the SCORE Award for Outstanding Minority-owned Business. He earned this honor for his contributions to his community, exemplary achievements in his field, and overall business success.

"When Steve and I decided we were going to do this, we decided we didn't know enough about LLCs and partnerships," John says. "We asked around and SCORE came up as a reference point to help start up a new business. We went to seminars on start-ups, marketing and business plans."

Walton and other SCORE Awards winners will be recognized during a September 16 event at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. John Walton saw an opportunity to bring his experience mentoring and teaching golf to young people in the community. With the help of a Coastal SCORE mentor, John and his business partner, Steve Conrad, are now engaging elementary school children in an after-school enrichment program centered on the lessons of golf.

NATIONAL BLACK GOLF MONTH TO LAUNCH APRIL 2011 New York, NY, —The African American Golfer’s Digest, the nations leading print publication and online portal for avid Black golfers, announces the designation of April 2011 as the inauguration of National Black Golf Month, an initiative that will align with golf groups and organizations nationwide to present free programs and events centered on all aspects of learning and playing the game. The effort aims to continue the rapid growth of Blacks who are taking up the activity.

“National Black Golf Month is designed to attract more African Americans to the game even in urban and suburban areas, increase awareness of the sport and its many health and career benefits for minorities and our communities,” said Debert Cook, publisher of the 7-year-old quarterly. According to Ms. Cook, “There are currently several distinct months dedicated to recognizing and honoring African American efforts and achievements: February is Black History Month; June is Black Music Month, July is National Black Family Month. And in April 2011 we will include a month that celebrates and encourages African Americans and their families to become a part of the $70 billion dollar industry of golf.”

2.3 million African American golfers, whereby a significant number of are Baby Boomers who are taking up the game at a fast pace. National Black Golf Month and AABoomers.com, an online website serving African American Baby Boomers, will combine their efforts in reaching the masses with their message.

"We are so excited about partnering with the African American Golfer’s Digest to create this venue to acknowledge African Americans’ growing interest and participation in Golf," said Lois-Ann Clark, publisher of AABoomers.com. " Golf courses and venues across the country are being invited to assist with launching National Black Golf Month in their area by hosting free events: clinics, workshops, lecture programs, showing movies, providing orientations, socials and other activities for men, women, youth and families. Julius Eving Loses Celebrity Golf Club International The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Hall of Famer Dr. J (Julius Erving) is no longer owner of the Celebrity Golf Club International located in Tucker, GA. Following a lengthy foreclosure preceding the real estate investment gone bad is now under new management and has been renamed Heritage Golf Links.

In the original deal, Erving’s trusted friend and former partner was to assume an $11 million loan in 2007 to purchase and operate the Heritage Golf Club, which they re-named Celebrity Golf Club International. Unfortunately, shortly following the 27-hole, 20-acre course appraised at only around $2 million. The partners were unable to make the $75,000 monthly mortgage payments and in the end the good doctor lost about $5 million.

When this publication contacted Heritage Golf Course for clarification, due to the high volume of inquiries we were getting from black readers who wished to visit, play the course and host tournaments there to support Dr. J, we received the following response: “Heritage Golf Links (formerly Celebrity Golf Club International) is no longer owned by Mr. Erving. Under the new ownership and management (ownership changed in April 2010), we have changed the positioning of the club dramatically,” wrote Matt Doyle, Marketing & Sales Director at the course via email message to us.

Several black organizations had hosted their tournaments at the course and respected the venue as a welcoming place for their outings. It seems that Dr. J has put the incident behind him and is focusing on new projects, which some believe has him looking at developing courses elsewhere.

Marygrove Golf Practice Facility Preview Dr. David J. Fike, Marygrove College president; Tom Doak, course designer; Midnight Golf and PGA representatives gathered at Marygrove College Campus in Detroit (MI) to tour and capture construction of the new golf practice facility.

The venue is a present-day example of unique urban land use; opening up golf to those who have traditionally had little access to the game; environmental sustainability; and creative ways Marygrove is partnering with others to develop tomorrow’s urban leaders.

Students who are enrolled in the Midnight Golf Program will be using the course as part of the “Urban Golf Project” that supports Midnight Golf—a 30-week empowerment and mentoring experience, founded by Renee Fluker, dedicated to improve underserved young adults’ personal development, educational preparedness and appreciation of the game of golf —with a place to 2010 Summer• Page 9

gather, learn and practice. The golf facility will offer a unique urban land-use plan, designed with the intent to incorporate state-ofthe-art sustainability practices, such as minimalist site-impact, water conservation and environmentally conscious fertilization and maintenance. It will feature a large practice putting green, a large sand bunker, two practice tee areas to accommodate up to 26 hitting bays and a 4-hole short course. World renowned golf course architect, Tom Doak is providing the design and construction oversight. Doak has designed over 30 courses worldwide, four of which are rated among the top 100 courses in the world. The chart above shows how rounds have fared by region from 2000 to present. For example, rounds in the South Atlantic dropped from nearly 111 million to about 106 million, a decline of nearly five million, or 4%. New England also had a 4% drop, but given the region’s fewer number of golf facilities, the decrease in rounds was only about one million.

The Quail Hollow Championship

By Deborah Saunders Fear, nerves and doubt are words that are obviously not a part of Rory Mcllroy’s vocabulary.

Imagine going from being two shots over the cut line with three holes to play late Friday afternoon and then fearlessly hitting a 4-iron from 206 yards over the water and sinking a 6 foot put for an eagle. Rory Mcllroy did just that and made the cut right on the number. His eagle shot is what sealed his victory at Quail Hollow. But it didn’t hurt that he shot the lowest round each of the last two days and set the course record on the final day with a 10 under 62, giving him a four-shot victory over Phil Mickelson.

PASSAGES Donald F. Littlejohn January 19, 1947-August 16, 2010

Littlejohn, the first African American to win the Charlotte City Amateur golf championship, died in Charlotte, NC at age 63. Littlejohn, who was a football coach and athletics administrator at Cochrane Middle School and a longtime football coach and athletic administrator at Cochrane Junior High (now Middle) School. Littlejohn put his stamp on Charlotte’s golf community when he won the Charlotte City Amateur Tournament in 1989 and again in 1991.

Littlejohn was born in Gaffney, SC to the late Enoch Littlejohn and Jessie Walker Littlejohn.

He attended Granard High School and upon his graduation in 1966, received an athletic scholarship to play football at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. While there he joined the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and as a quarterback led his team to win the CIAA Championship.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical and Health Education in 1970 and following joined Cochrane’s staff at Athletic Director.

Award, for best overall athletic program in winnings and sportsmanship at least 12 times; he was voted Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Coach of the Year 14 times.

Littlejohn went on to obtain a Masters of Arts Degree in teaching from Gardner Webb College in Boiling Springs, NC in 1984. In 1995 he won the Coach of the Year for the entire state of North Carolina for middle/junior high sports and was inducted into the Johnson C. Smith Athletic Hall of Fame. He retired last year and lived to see Cochrane’s gym named in his honor in 2009.

He started his golf career as a caddie at age 9 and became the first African American to win the Clayton Heffner Golf Tournament. The City of Charlotte Park and Recreation named the 3rd hole at Revolution Golf Course in his honor. Then in 2002 he was inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame.

Littlejohn was at the top of his game in the early ‘90s when he was one of Charlotte’s top amateurs. He won 11 Par Buster championships, beating Robert “Git” Brown in a fourhole playoff in 1977 for his first title. His last win was in 2008. He also toured the Carolinas playing amateur tournaments.

“Donald played a lot of (Carolinas Golf Association) tournaments and he was on the board (of directors),” Par Busters organizer John Love said. “He qualified for a lot more tournaments than not.”

The City Amateur championships were Littlejohn’s crowning moment. During his heyday, Littlejohn would skip the Par Busters tournament – made up primarily of African American players – to prepare for the deeper City Am field. The Par Busters understood what was at stake.

And, a pioneer in a lot of ways,” Love said.

Charlie Sifford and James Black – both of whom have Charlotte ties – are better known nationally as African American golf trailblazers, but Littlejohn’s impact was local. Many believe that Littlejohn had the temperament and skill to play for pay, but preferred working with young people full time.

Left to cherish endless loving memories are: his wife of thirty-seven years, Carolyn Littlejohn of Charlotte, two sons, Mr. Christian Perry of Fort Dix, NJ and Ms. Donald F. Littlejohn, II of Greensboro, NC; one daughter, Ms. Latoya Littlejohn of Concord, NC; three brothers, Mr. Enoch Littlejohn (Betty), Mr. Donnie Ray Littlejohn (Elnora) and Ricky Dean Littlejohn all of Gaffney, SC; two sisters, Mrs. Altie Anderson (Dewayne) of Spartanburg, SC, and Mrs. Sarah Alston (Nigel) of Winston-Salem, NC; six grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Special Tribute to Julius L. Chambers, Esq. in celebration of “His Life, Career and Legacy” was hosted by the PGA of America on Saturday evening, June 5, 2010 during the 32nd annual Julius L. Chambers Invitation Golf Tournament at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Chambers, born in rural Montgomery County (NC) witnessed the barriers, threats and indignities of the Jim Crow South. He earned a masters degree in history from the University of Michigan in 1959 prior to entering the University of North Carolina Law School under a legally imposed integration order.

He finished first in his class of 100 in 1962.

One year later, Thurgood Marshall hired Chambers as the first intern of the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund Inc. (LDF).

Chambers served as President of the Board of Directors for LDF (1975 to 1984), Director Counsel (1984-1993) and Co-Chairman of the Board (1998-2005). He was the third directorcounsel of the LDF, following Thurgood Marshall and Jack Greenberg. At the LDF, he became the field marshall for 24 staff attorneys and approximately 400 cooperating attorneys around the nation. LDF has offices in New York City and Washington, D.C., and maintains an active caseload of more than

Indeed, the theme of the event — "His Life, His Career, His Legacy" — provided a pathway that allowed those present to more fully appreciate the professional and personal journey that Julius has chosen to take for the betterment of so many others in our great nation.

A legal giant. A hero in the struggle for civil rights. An institution builder. Julius Chambers is all of those, but perhaps the most enduring image is that of Julius calling America to narrow the gap between its words and its deeds. And under his leadership from 1984-1993, the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund increased its role as the most significant civil rights legal advocacy organization in the nation.

Andrew Proctor Andrew Proctor has a golf handicap of 3.6 and is a four time winner of renowned WSGA Alan Bennett Memorial Junior Golf Championship.

Born and raised in Chandler, Arizona, the 11year-old attends Aprends Middle School and has remained an Honors student all the way through. The 5’ 4” sixth grader is a US Kids four-time Arizona State Champion and has played in the US Kids European Championship (Scotland 2008).

Jasmine Braswell 11-year-old, 6’ tall Jasmine was the first African American girl to win a 10-year-old tournament in Northern Virginia. Last year she changed clubs (from graphite to steel) and grew two inches in height. “This affected her game with the change of weight of the club and how she played,” says her very supportive dad, Roland.

Jasmine averages 55 per round, playing nine holes in multiple tournaments (US Kids and Loudoun County Junior Golf) during the spring and summer season. She is diligent in her practice, focus and commitment to lower her average in 2011.

Andrew qualified for the past four years to play on the prestigious Tiger Woods Foundation Golf Team and he is a two-time member of prestigious Jason Jenson Cup of Arizona, honoring best kids of the Arizona State to play in Ryder Cup format while competing against other States and as the youngest member on the team. Among his many mentors is Bill Dickey, Founder of the Bill Dickey Scholarship Foundation, John Gunby, William Dixon and Leonard Walker.

He has been doing community service for the past five years at his home course, Shalimar Country Club, working with the Special Olympics and enjoys participating on the fall basketball team. “He’s a great team player and a well rounded boy,” proudly says his mother Cheryl.

According to Andrew, “My greatest challenge is to trust what I do, and to always stay mentally strong when I play golf.” He says that he is overcoming this by always maintaining his composure and staying positive. “I don't get upset with myself while playing bad holes.”

At first glance one might think that 16-years-old, Amira (her name means “Princess” in Swahili) is just another junior high student attending Rivers Academy in Alpharetta, GA. She enjoys her classes and is a member of the Planet Philanthropy 2010. But, it's her excellence in golf that has set her apart from other students.

Amira ranked 87 out of 3,000 junior girls and is the only Black female golfer to make the top 60 cut for match play at the 2010 US Women’s Amateur Championship, and she won her first match at the event to finish in a round of 32. The zero handicapper says that, “My biggest challenge is myself.” With her dad, John adding, “She really just does not know how good of a golfer she is.”

Known as a kind and giving person she always puts God first, is a hard worker not only in her sport but also in the community. With the help of her golf coach, David Scheyer, Amira is set on going the distance to achieve greater things.

motivation to persevere and pay it forward philanthropically. Stephen mentors young golfers in his hometown of Houston, Texas and extends himself regionally to the Andrew and Walter Young YMCA and United Athlete Foundation (UAF) based in Atlanta, GA.

Alongside his volunteerism efforts, Reed’s ambition to impact the traditions of golf have resulted in the Destiny Golf organization.

Destiny Golf is designed to bridge the gap between corporations and talented up-andcoming professional golfers by harvesting a networking environment where young pro golfers can engage with business executives and other seasoned minority players. Reed hopes Destiny Golf will act as a catalyst to accelerate the priority of diversity in golf and provide young minority players with adequate opportunity to excel professionally.

By further exposing the game to his many celebrity and corporate friends through events, philanthropy, and making TV appearances on hit shows like ESPN's Outside The Lines and VH1's What Chilli Wants, Stephen has been able to remain the topic of conversation when it comes to diversity in the game of golf and the next minority to play on the PGA Tour. When asked what he wants to achieve, Stephen candidly replies, “Simply put, I want to be the "Color of Golf" and all that it entails. “Helpful Facts to Keep You Seeing”

In order for you to read, write, cook, golf and see your world you need to protect, check and preserve your eyesight. These helpful facts will assist you in keeping healthy, useful eyes.

Routine eye exams start in the newborn nursery, pre-school exams, and driver license eye checks are preliminary. Observant mothers, caregivers and family doctors usually notice signs and symptoms that alerts or requires you to seek more testing and evaluation by medical eye care specialists.

GLAUCOMA (pronounced glaw-coma--it’s the thief of sight) because there are usually no symptoms. African Americans should begin testing for it in their mid-twenties, especially when there is a family history of the disorder, as we are three times more at risk for the disease and it’s a very common cause of blindness in adults. It runs in families and is seen in association with diabetes, some forms of

arthritis, occurs after eye injuries and chronic steroid use.

Glaucoma puts pressure on the optic nerve, the cable in the back of the eye that transmits information to the brain of what you are seeing. More than half of the people with glaucoma do not know it because it usually destroys eyesight without any pain or sudden symptoms. It progresses slowly over months and years taking away your side vision, so by the time you notice changes, glaucoma has already caused serious, permanent damage.

But, if caught early, diagnosed and treated you stand a much greater chance of preserving your eyesight.

Only regular, yearly eye examinations by a medically-trained, eye care specialist can glaucoma be detected and treated before loss of vision occurs. An eye check for glasses or contact lenses does NOT include a complete exam for glaucoma. So be sure to ask your eye care

specialist to check for it, especially if you experience frequent eyeglass changes with little improvement in your vision.

Problems focusing in dark rooms; blurry, foggy vision; rainbow-colored rings around lights can be tip-offs to glaucoma or other eye disorders. The eye tests are not painful and can help you preserve your vision for a lifetime.

Miami, From A Colorful Point of View "Miami" derives from a Native American word meaning "sweet water”. The city is located in southeast Florida in Miami-Dade County, between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean.

Native Americans are known to have settled in the Miami region for about 10,000 years. Today, with a population of 362,470 people (22.31% African American), Miami has throngs of cultural history to be discovered and enjoyed.

Isabella River is an African American and owner of Royal Host Tours & Cruises. Their service provides excellent tours to acquaint you with the Black history of Miami and some of its oldest communities.

Liberty City is one great tour stop. Home of the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, it was founded in 1975 to serve as a nesting ground for emerging talent in the performing and visual arts.

Miami’s Overtown area is historically, the city’s second oldest African American settlement. The Black Archives History and Research Foundation serves as the manuscript and photographic repository for the community’s legacy. Over in Little Havana you’ll find it is a niche Cuban immigrant neighborhood and a center of social and political activities. The Exquisite Restaurant is a staple in the area and serves delicious Cuban foods. The Little Haiti area has changed from agricultural to residential and gleams with Creole influences, small shops and taverns.

Marriot’s Doral Golf Resort boasts 5 championship courses, convention facilities and the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa. Doral Golf & Resort’s TPC Blue Monster Golf Course was an experience that I thought that I would never have. For my age (I turned 80 on August 15th) I shot a respectable 92. The TPC Blue is home of the World Golf Championships -CA Championship and has hosted prestigious PGA TOUR events for the past 45 years.

Almost every big golf name player has enjoyed a moment triumph on it. Dick Wilson originally designed the course that’s 7,125 yards from the tournament tees. Two Seaters Golf Club Providing an alternative for youth, the Two Seaters Golf Club Foundation is comprised of men and women spanning the Chicagoland area to Mississippi and Tennessee.

Their purpose is to foster and promote good fellowship while perpetuating the game of golf in minority communities and their success has given many youngsters a positive option to drugs, crime, and gang involvement while honoring golf accomplishments, scholastic achievements and cultural enrichment. The organization is most proud of being able to provide scholarships and support to college bound students.

Super Senior Rufus Lewis Golf’s Angel God fearing, unselfish, humble, talented and encouraging are words that come to mind when describing Rufus Lewis. For years Lewis has taught junior golf either as a coach at Jefferson High School or as the junior golf chairman for the Sunshine State Amateur Golfers Association. “Just helping young kids and junior golf, that’s the thing I’m hung up on,” said the St. Petersburg, Florida, native.

“I just love to get young kids involved in the game and learn its responsibility and code of ethics. When you start with a kid who really doesn’t have any fundamentals and see him develop, it makes you feel good.”

Lewis, 66, is a retired Tampa Police Sergeant, and a 1995 inductee into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame in Winston Salem, NC. “There are so many other great golfers who could have been selected, but I am truly grateful to be listed among such men,” he said. Some of those great men are Lee Elder, Charlie Sifford, Jim Dent, Charlie Owens, and Arnold Palmer.

During the 1970s and ‘80s, Lewis dominated the Sunshine State Amateur Golfers Association circuit winning some 40 tournaments, including two SSAGA state championships in ‘79 and ‘81. With his long drive, excellent course management and easy temperament, it was no wonder he was known as one of the greatest Black amateurs in the state.

In 1985, he was awarded the Willie Black Award for his efforts in promoting golf among children and adults. He was presented with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tampa Award in 1987 for Outstanding Public Service in support of the organization. He also accepted Tampa Golf Club’s highest award for outstanding service and dedication as its tournament director. In 1991, the Tampa Golf Club Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Sport of Golf in his Community.

Louis has helped over 20 students receive college scholarships thru the Bill Dickey Scholarship Foundation, formerly the National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Association.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Lewis is determined to make sure all learn and enjoy the game of golf. He has developed a 3 week golf school where the focus is “Your Creative 2010 Summer• Page 31

It is difficult view many of the items and wonder if, perhaps I share the same DNA as the person who wore those horrid chains and shackles. John Hankins is the Museum Director and he does an excellent job explaining the history of New Orleans.

The Mardi Gras museum. This one was the Backstreet Cultural Museum which is dedicated to the Mardi Gras Indians and is the only museum of its kind. The costumes are amazingly beautiful and the cultural history of the Mardi Gras Indians just as fascinating.

Dooky Chase serves Creole, Soul Food and is owned and run by the delightful Leah Chase, who still wears an apron and oversees the kitchen like the caring and loving individual she is. As the saying goes, the food is so good it makes you want to ‘slap my momma’. Now that is good! Entrees range from $9 to $20.

Dinner at Olivier’s is satisfying. The décor, the ambiance, the owner’s warm welcoming smile will sway you into one of the best nights in the city.

The Olivier brothers are personable, charismatic and proud of their heritage. Their mother and father built the restaurant from the ground up.

Their Creole Rabbit, Pecan Breaded Oysters,

Crawfish Etouffe, and famous Gumbo Trio will keep you enticed, as will the personal stories they love to share with guests of their parent’s years in the business.

by Nadra DeMagnus, owner and creator of the venture. You’ll visit eateries off the beaten path and located in areas that tourists wouldn’t normally know how to get to.

The Grill Room on Gravier Street is very upscale and the menu is not the traditional Creole flair, but more along the lines of Country Club dining. Live musicians add to the overall ambience and intimate feel.

The pier on Canal Street offers great flea market shopping. Afterwards be sure to tour the Garden District, and have brunch at the House of Blues.

New Orleans and its people is a city full of hospitality and pride. Even after one of the most gut wrenching tragedies in history. If anything, the aftermath of Katrina has made this city warmer, more hopeful and more unified.

San Antonio: Truly the Heart of Texas

Welcome to the great state of Texas. To many it’s the “Lone star State” and to others it is “cattle country”.

Either way it is home to one of America’s best tourism cities. Within the boundaries of the 2nd largest state in the Union sits San Antonio, which today has become the 8th largest city in the United States. With its warm climate, rich culture, warm southwest hospitality and vibrant historical atmosphere it has become a prime vacation spot for the whole family to enjoy.

From the youngest child, to the avid golfer, there is something here for everyone.

The Westin La Cantera Resort, located just outside the downtown district of San Antonio, is home to the PGA Tours Valero Texas Open at La Cantera.

This tournament ready par 72 course stretches across 7,001 yrds, borders along Texas Hill Country.

This course can definitely pose a challenge to the average golfer. Being tournament ready the grass must be prepped according to PGA standards making the “rough” more difficult for many golfers. Yet it gives golfers the opportunity to play on the same level and under the same conditions as the Pro Golfers. After playing the course, you will have much more appreciation for what the professional golfer has to endure to become successful in this career field. Throughout your playing time on the course you are greeted with breath taking views.

The most famous being the 7th tee which has an 80ft drop to the fairway that overlooks the roller coasters at Six Flags Fiesta Texas Theme Park in downtown San Antonio.

Palmer course is known for its “signature” holes. The most amazing being the 4th hole with a waterfall and pond.

Once you have made it over the pond after teeing off you have to walk across the Winnie Palmer Memorial Bridge past the waterfall to get to the green. This bridge was dedicated to his late wife Winnie Palmer, just by looking at this hole you can see the love he had for his wife expressed all around you. After a long day of golfing, of course you are going to want to relax.

The Westin La Cantera offers many different services such Swedish massages, aromatherapy, manicures, and even a 7,600 sq ft cardio and weight training fitness center for your enjoyment. If you want you can just relax beside one of their pools or play a round of tennis.

While in San Antonio a must see is the Mision San Antonio de Valero, or as it is commonly known as The Alamo. This small structure rest inside the center of the city, and if you are not paying attention you may just walk right past it without noticing. For a place so small, it holds a large amount of history.

Once inside these walls you are taken back to the year 1836 where 189 defenders, including famed frontiersman David Crockett and renowned knife La Cantera Clubhouse

While at The Westin La Cantera you also have the opportunity to enjoy the Palmer Course. This 71 par 6,926 yd course was especially designed by the famous golfer Arnold Palmer. This course is very unique with its rock cropping and green folige. The

fighter Jim Bowie fought off 4,000 troops from the Mexican army for 13 days. You will learn why the Battle of the Alamo was important and how it led to the Texas Revolution. As you walk along the artifacts you can almost hear the gunfire and the canons exploding. Sadly though, you are limited to taking pictures only on the outside.

After a long day you can come relax along the famed Paseo Del Rio, the River Walk. Along a 2 ½ mile stretch there are numerous restaurants, bars and stores for you to walk around and enjoy. You can also take a tour along the river on one of the river barges and experience the full effect of the atmosphere while listening to music coming from different restaurants and clubs along the river. If you like you can have dinner while cruising along the river. The famous Boudro’s: A Texas bistro on the River Walk can serve your meal on one of their special river barges. You can enjoy a fine glass of wine and prime rib as you cruise along the river by candlelight.

San Antonio definitely is the “Heart of Texas”. With its rich Mexican and Native American influence you can see why it has a warm and welcoming atmosphere to its Texas Pride.

This is not only a golfers paradise, but a travelers paradise as well.

The future of junior golf continues to look promising as Myah Jackson of Chicago won her second straight Pee Wee Girls Division with 9 hole scores of 35 – 41 – 76 to win by six shots over Christyn Carr of Duluth, GA who finished with a 40 – 42 – 82 total.

Tiana Jones of Alliance, OH down by four strokes to Sheridan Balyeat of Lima, OH after a opening round 4 under par 68 posted by Balyeat at Hawthorne Hills Golf Club in Lima, OH at the 55th Midwest Golf Association’s, Procter & Gamble – Lima Plant and St Rita’s Medical Center National Junior Golf Championship (July 17-18) and made up the 4 stroke difference after the second hole and went on to capture her third straight championship with a 36 hole total of 2 under par 142.

Jones shot the front side even par while Balyeat shot an six over 42. Jones continued the route by posting a two under par 34 on the back as Balyeat shot a two over par 38.

Young Grant Hill of Memphis, TN won the Pee Wee Boy Division with scores of 35 and 33 a 68 total for the 18 holes to win by eight shots over newcomer Soh Kuyama of Sandusky, OH who finished at 76 followed by Tiger Hubbard of Lower Burrell, PA just four shot back at 80.

In the Junior Boys Division, Brandon French of Lima, OH ran away from the field of 42 junior boys with rounds of 69 on Saturday followed by a 4 under par 68 on Sunday to post a 7 under par total. French was one of the key golfers in Lima Central Catholic’s recent success and next year will attend Fairleigh Dickenson University in New Jersey.

Johnny Ellis of Lima and Blaine Ricketts of Belle Center, OH both finished tied for second in the overall competition with 36 hole totals of even par 144.

For their efforts, Jones will represent the Midwest Golf Association at this years PGA National Junior Championship being held in Fort Wayne, IN at Sycamore Hills Country Club. Balyeat will be the representative in 2011 due to the age restriction on junior golfers.

After the PGA National Junior Championship Jones will pack up her gear and head down to Orangeburg, SC where she will join a talented team of golfers at South Carolina State University in the

2nd Annual Westchester Charity Shoot Out Golf Tournament

The April 17th tournament was a success, raising money for the Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless and The Thomas H. Slater Center. About 50 golfers weathered the 90 degree heat and the high humidity to play Maple Moor Golf Course, bid at a silent auction and meet celebrities like Former NFL Quarterback and Syracuse University standout Don McPherson.

The family of Warren Ogburn including his mother, sister, brother and son along with Fire Chief Richard Lyman all participated in a short ceremony. A bagpiper in traditional kilt led the small crowd to the site of the first tree. A prayer was said. The bagpipes played Amazing Grace and marched into the sunset while the family members each placed a shovel of dirt onto the tree roots. The ceremony was followed by a Banquet at the course catered by Yvonne’s Southern Cuisine of Pelham New York.

8th ANNUAL PIONEER GOLF TOURNAMENT The eight annual pioneer golf tournament was held June 26 and 27, 2010 at the Historic Clearview Golf Course in East Canton, OH. Ron Fuller and Jessie Brooks launched the outing as a means for growing exposure and rounds at Clearview. Thanks to the support of African American Golfer’s Digest and others their vision has prospered, as players from 13 states, including Alaska attended this year’s competition. “Everyone tells me they have a good time and plan to come back next year. I also received an email from one of our golfers that said, snce he started playing in the tournament he has met some of the best people in the world,” said Brooks. “This is encouraging to Ron and me, and keeps us both energized for next year.”

Youth learned the basic swing--most of the kids had never held a golf club. With temps in the high 90s, all of the youngsters remained active and motivated.

Art Shell UMES Celebrity Golf Classic and Junior Tournament University of Maryland Eastern Shore alumnus and Oakland Raider great Art Shell took to the green along with more than 27 NFL, college football and African American golf celebrities to raise some green for students in the university’s PGA Golf Management Program.

The June 16th event took place at Great Hope Golf Course, only minutes from campus.

Approximately 150 golfers took part in the Celebrity Golf Classic, the main event, while 25 junior golfers participated in an all-new Junior Golf Tournament.

Roosevelt Golfers Association RGA members and guests enjoyed a day of fun and challenge on July 12 during their scholarship awards golf tournament held at the beautiful Hamlet Wind Watch Golf & Country club in Hauppauge, New York and over $5,000 was raised to benefit its scholarship fund.
