"AADP IS THE ONE OF MOST RENOWNED PARADES’ OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE IN THE COUNTRY." Since then, the African American Day Parade (AADP) has been held every third Sunday in September.

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd (formerly known as Seventh Avenue) of the legendary Harlem, NY was the selected location for the parade due to its historical significance in Black culture. This boulevard was the heart of the Harlem Renaissance, an era known for the major advancement of African American culture which in turn proclaimed Harlem as the Black capital of America.

AADP is now classified as a national parade. Furthermore, it is the one of most renowned parades’ of African American culture in the country, with the largest cross-section of participants, including community & political leaders, community-based & religious organizations, civil servants, celebrities, fraternities & sororities, marching bands, dance ensembles and many more, with a viewing of over 900,000 attendees along the parade route. We have over 200 participating organizations from over 12 states and many countries throughout the diaspora participate in our annual parade.

The AADP focuses on five basic components that help to strengthen the community: Business, Education, Health, Politics/Government & Arts/Culture. Each year we choose one of these sectors as our theme and we invite those that have contributed to that field to act as our Grand Marshals, Marshals, and Honorary Guests. See you in September!

The AADP Black Business Grant Program is an AADP initiative to promote the entrepreneurial endeavors of Black Business owners by providing financial assistance to Black businesses. Madam C.J. Walker became America’s first self made woman millionaire through the success of her hair care line. After suffering hair loss, Walker began creating homemade hair care products. These products included vegetable based pomades and hair straighteners. In 1905, she launched her hair line for sale. She marketed her products all the around the country through the use of paper advertisements, hosting lectures and demonstrations, and assembling her own network of sales agents making door to door sales.

In 1906, entrepreneur O.W. Gurley created some of the first black owned businesses in the Greenwood district which included housing properties, stores, and the AME Church. He also helped African Americans in this area become land owners by purchasing 40 acres of land in Tulsa and selling it amongst the African American community. The efforts of O.W. Gurley helped catapult the creation of the copious amount of black businesses in Greenwood, Oklahoma as known as Black Wall Street.

In the 1900s, Philip Payton (aka "The Father of Harlem") managed properties for various landlords in Harlem, NY. Seeing the beginning stages of the great migration of Southern blacks traveling to NYC, Payton began leasing and managing the properties to Black tenants with the creation of his Afro-American Realty company in 1904. This helped the African American population grow to roughly 70,000, setting the foundation for Harlem to become the Mecca of Black culture just a few years later. The AfroAmerican Realty had over one million dollars in assets.

This community of 10,000 African Americans lived thriving middle to upper class lives as the dollar circulated at least 1 year before leaving the community

The Greenwood District is a community located in Oklahoma State which housed a large cross section of Black businesses in the early 1900s. During the late 1800s, many African Americans moved to Oklahoma in hopes of obtaining job opportunities while escaping racial persecution. They purchased undeveloped land in Tulsa and built black owned housing properties along with local stores. As the African American population increased by the thousands, these people expanded their entrepreneurial efforts. They created a self-sufficient community as they built schools, churches, medical offices, law offices, housing properties, theaters, libraries, banks, commercial stores, and much more. This community of 10,000 African Americans lived thriving middle to upper class lives as the dollar circulated at least 1 year before leaving the community. In 1921, this community was destroyed due to a sexual assault accusation that triggered the deadly race massacre commonly referred to as the Tulsa Race Massacre.

SEVENTH AVENUE HARLEM Seventh Avenue in Harlem, NY, currently known as Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., had one of the highest concentration of black owned businesses during the Harlem Renaissance. This Avenue was the location of legendary establishments such as The Lafayette Theatre (this was the first major American theatre to desegregate), the Pace Phonographic Record Corporation (the first black owned and operated record company), and Small’s Paradise (one of the most famous black owned night clubs and the longest operating night club in Harlem). Not only was Seventh Avenue one the prime locations of businesses in Harlem, NY, it was also the prime the locations for parades and other large gatherings of the black community. Notable gatherings include marches led by the legendary Marcus Garvey and the Annual African American Day Parade

MARY T. WASHINGTON During 1939, many accounting firms did not hire African American accountants. Therefore, Mary T. Washington opened her own accounting firm which allowed African Americans to learn and practice accounting. Washington’s firm, currently called Washington, Pittman, & McKeever LLC, is one of the largest black owned accounting firms in US History. Because of Washington’s tremendous accomplishments, Chicago has officially declared Sunday, September 30 as Mary T. Washington Wylie Day throughout the city.

MOTOWN RECORDS

By 1965, Motown became the richest black owned corporation in America

The iconic Motown Records recording label was founded in 1959 by Detroit native, Berry Gordy. It was Gordy's intention to build a hit making factory and strategically marketed music young Americans hence Motown's slogan "The Sound of Young America." With its creation of catchy hooks and an assembly line song production approach, this label climbed up the 1960 music charts with its first number hit song: "Shop Around" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.

Motown continued to excel throughout the decade as 357 of their released singles dominated the R&B and pop charts. By 1965, Motown became the richest black owned corporation in America. Furthermore, Motown helped change the cultural climate of America. Motown's popularity challenged America's 1960 segregation culture as it drew fan bases amongst both white and black audiences. This helped Motown infiltrate a plethora of legendary black artists into the commercial mainstream American music industry. These legendary artist include The Supremes, The Temptation, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, and much more. These musicians sang the Motown sound and changed the sound of modern pop and R&B. Though Motown is currently under the Universal Music Group, it remains a vital pillar in the music industry.

ZELDA VALDES Zelda Wynn Valdes was an iconic fashion designer who redefined American fashion. Her designs were distinctly creative and were made to suit a diversity of women. Her curvy-girl friendly designs became the fashion trend of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1948, Valdes's "Chez Zelda" fashion boutique made history as it became the first black owned business located on Broadway Avenue, NYC. As her popularity continued to grow, Valdes made custom attire for a plethora of iconic stars such as Dorothy Dandridge, Gladys Knight, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Marian Anderson, and many others. In 1960, she further shook up the fashion industry with her design of the most iconic costumes of all time: the original Playboy Bunny outfit. This was the first uniform in US history to be trademarked. Since then, she cofounded the National Association of Fashion Accessory Designers to help more designers of color break into the fashion industry. She has also led sewing classes for NYC youth and collaborated with our 2018 Grand Marshal, Arthur Mitchell, by designing costumes for 82 productions hosted by the Dance Theatre of Harlem

Established the first black owned business located on Broadway Avenue, NYC called Chez Zelda

DAVID STEWARD After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Business, David Steward worked a variety of jobs. These jobs included the Wagner Electric Company where he was the first Black sales representative in the company’s history, the Pacific Railroad Company, and FedEx where he was conducted in their fall of fame for his outstanding sales achievements. Although Steward accomplished much with these experiences, Steward aspired to do more with his business expertise and be his own boss. Therefore, in 1990, David Steward founded World Wide Technology, Inc (WWT). He said started this technology service company because he “knew then that tech was changing the way we do business.” This company provides IT services in the areas of network planning, design, hardware configuration, software imaging, and more to various companies in both the public and private sectors. Steward’s company is said to have generated at least $10 billion dollars in revenue and he currently has $3 billion stake in World Wide Tech.

This makes WWT one of the largest private owned companies in America and makes David Steward the second wealthiest African American. With a net worth of $3.9 billion, Steward is currently one of five black billionaires in America.

ERIKA JAMES

Erika James is the first female and first Black person to be appointed Dean of the highest ranked business school in the country: Wharton School of Business

Erika H. James is a brilliant business educator. After earning her undergraduate degree in psychology from Pomona College in 1991, she decided to study organizational psychology at the University for Michigan for her Master’s and then for her PH. D. shortly after.

She aimed to uncover more about this subject. Therefore, James decided to pursue a career as a business educator and researcher.

James has since then worked at top business schools such as Tulane University’s Freeman School of Business and the Harvard Business School specializing crisis leadership as well as workplace diversity.

In 2014, Erika James broke both racial and gender barriers as she became the first woman and first Black person to be appointed Dean at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. She also became the first Black person to serve as Dean of a top 25 MBA program. As a Dean, she became a great influencer in her field. She has diversified and expanded the school’s business faculty by 25%.

Just recently, James made history again as she is the first female and first Black person to be appointed Dean of the highest ranked business school in the country: the Wharton School of Business.
