Career Fair Preparation What is the purpose of a Career Fair? • • •

Introduce you to future career paths or occupational opportunities within an organization Highlight employers who might be recruiting for various employment opportunities (contract, part-time, summer, full-time) To gather information and learn about different employers – Try and find a company that fits YOU!

Preparation – Before the fair • • • • •

• •

Obtain a list of the companies that will be present (exhibitor list available on Career Services site and on CareerLink – www.ucalgary.ca/careers) Research companies that interest you, review their websites and prepare a list of questions to ask Develop your 30 second introduction – often referred to as ‘your elevator speech’ Dress appropriately - business casual. Be prepared to take notes after you talk to each employer; you can take note of the company name, the name of the person you talked to and their job title (if you know it) and then the answers they provided to the questions that you asked them (this could help you write the first paragraph of your cover letter when you apply later) Business cards and copies of your resume are useful, but not all employers will accept documents from students. Before you hand your resume to the employer ask them if they take it Set a goal for yourself i.e. make 3 connections, learn 3 things about a company, arrange for 3 informational interviews (i.e. coffee conversations)

Professional and Positive - At the event • • • • • • • • • • • •

8

Visit the booths by yourself, not with a group of friends Introduce yourself, offer a handshake, smile and make eye contact Provide your 30 second intro. After making your initial introduction continue with one or two good questions that allow you to learn and demonstrate your research Be patient, friendly and wait your turn Be conscious of your surroundings - if they’re busy, don’t monopolize their time, and if they are super busy, consider taking a lap of the event and coming back later Make sure your conversation is positive, professional, and not too long – don’t linger awkwardly. Request/take brochures, handouts concerning the company Offer to leave your business card, or if appropriate, your resume Request a business card and mention your interest in following up at a later date Make notes on each business card regarding key points of your conversation Thank the representative for his or her time Be prepared, as most employers will ask you to apply online. Try and build a conversation from there, so don’t just ask what jobs there are available

Online Career Fair Magazine

Employer Follow up • • • • •

Write a brief thank you email (or LinkedIn message) and refer to the date, location of your meeting and something memorable about your conversation Follow-up as appropriate – connect with the employer in the manner they requested. For example LinkedIn, email or telephone Express your appreciation for their time and information Reiterate your interest in their company and your qualifications for specific positions Ask any additional questions

Sample Intros 1. Hello, my name is _____, and I’m a second-year graduate student studying _____ in the Faculty of (pause for a handshake as your contract introduces himself or herself). Good to meet you. I’ve have looked at your website and have read about your company. You’ve just begun a big project related to _____ and I am really interested in this and I am wondering what types of employment opportunities in the field of you might have as a result? 2. “Hi my name is _____; I am taking _____ (Major and/or Degree). I really like it and am in my _____ year of study. I enjoy _____ (top skills) and am exploring what I can do in my career. I am open to options and interested in learning more about _____ (their company name).”

Possible Questions to Ask Employers About the industry or employer • What major issues, concerns or changes do you anticipate in the next five years? • How will these changes impact your organization? • What things did you do before you started working at _____ company? • Do you have a formal training program and if so, how do you train your staff? • “I am graduating with my Bachelor of _____ in April; can you foresee any openings for new grad positions?” About your possible fit with the company • What characteristics do you need to do well in this line of work? • What competencies, knowledge, skills or experience are necessary? What skills does your company look for when you hire? • Would someone with my qualifications, skills and abilities fit into an organization like ________? About work prospects • Is there anyone else you think I should talk to regarding opportunities for my background? • Do you have any suggestions or advice on who else I might benefit from speaking with? • What is the outlook in this industry for economic growth and employment opportunities in your company? • Would it be possible to talk to you again at a future date to find out more about your company and about what I have to offer?

a new field. There has been one constant in all of these conversations over the years. What I have learned is that it is not the resume we create or the number of job applications we make but often the intangible ripples caused by our actions that create conditions for career success. If there was one piece of advice I could offer to all individuals related to their career development it would be simply this; stay in motion. Repeatedly, I have observed that those who are successful and can overcome obstacles are those who stay in motion. Those who cannot overcome life’s setbacks and stop usually end up giving up on their dreams and full potential.

real within my own career, and I will share a brief story to provide some evidence of the power of staying in motion regardless of the external forces around you. Six years ago I began a role where I was the youngest and least experienced career practitioner on campus. I had much to gain with respect to experience and education. At the time it was daunting and I often lost confidence or doubted my abilities when I volunteered for projects or took on new roles. I made the decision to do my job well by remaining open to learning opportunities and reaching out to experienced professionals. Every quarter I set goals that were

Each time we face a career decision, uncertainty or have an opportunity to make a change and apply for a new role, this is the pinnacle of other activities. If we have set goals on a regular basis and maintain motion we will see these decisions as an outcome of our actions and not as the start of our career exploration. Here are some quick tips for staying in motion:

1. Every week, plant seeds for your future. Reach out to people, enroll in a course, read a book, learn a new skill, take on a new project.

2. Anticipate busy times and do something anyway, however small, connected to your goals. This can be as simple as signing up for a blog online that is relevant to your field.

3. Build relationships out of kindness and not only in a time of need. Talk to people and express a genuine interest in who they are. If you only network when you need to make a decision or apply for a job, you will not have quality connections to draw upon.

4. Open your mind and ask what is possible when you face a setback or a challenge. There will be an array of emotions, but if you continually set yourself in motion then you will find opportunity when something else comes to an end.

5. Help others and contribute your skills to your workplace or community. Sometimes you may be in between roles or uncertain of your career direction. Contribute anyway, as you will learn more about yourself in action than through passive reflection.

6. Be sure to provide yourself small rewards and practice self-care to maintain your motivation and momentum.

7. Connect to a higher purpose or direction that does not have to be absolute. I was not always certain of where I was heading, but my goal was to learn as much as possible about my role and the organization I was working for.

8. Seek inspiration and remember you are not an island. Inspiration can be found in other professionals, community leaders, and social media. Fill your mind with passionate people. In my experience, the key to career success is momentum. Stay in motion and reach out, connect, learn and keep moving. Maybe these actions will lead to a new friendship or a fun experience. Or maybe this activity will lead you to your next job - and this one could be your dream role!

Wanted:

SOMEONE UNIQUE

By Andrea Geeraert

S

o you have a degree. Congratulations! After all the pictures are taken, the speeches are given, and the champagne sipped, you’re left bright eyed & bushy tailed with your degree in one hand and your pride in the other. You’ve never worked so hard for something, slept so little, or spent so much on textbooks. So why aren’t employers chomping at the bit to hire you?!

Did you know that more than 69% of Canadians aged 25-44 are post-secondary graduates?* That’s right- you’re competing with 70% of the working population for a job. In fact, Canada has more post-secondary graduates than any other country within the OECD & G7. Sorry to say, but that fancy degree you’re holding won’t make you special. Cue Sigh. But wait- There’s good news! Your degree may not set you apart, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need it. Employers need you to qualify for a job with your degree, but it’s not actually what they are most focused on. In fact, in many cases, they’re not even concerned what kind of degree you have. Here’s where all the ‘blood sweat & tears’ that went into your degree pay off- employers know how much hard work it takes, and they want to hear your unique story. You will get hired for what makes you ‘YOU,’ not the piece of paper hanging on your wall. Here’s the thing, companies know that they can teach you to use their computer system, to balance a spreadsheet, to write a proposal, or code a website. Sure, most jobs require experience in some technical skill. But the truth of the matter is that employers are looking for people who have attributes that cannot be taught. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve heard an HR rep tell me that what they want most is to find someone with the right personality for the job. They’re not jumping out of their seats for a bachelor’s degree, they’re jumping out of their seats for the candidates who have the character they want. Ultimately, you need to know yourself before you can sell yourself. I’m not talking about taking a year sabbatical into the Himalayan mountains to meditate (although, it couldn’t hurt). I’m talking about the self-discoveries you make during exciting accomplishments, or challenging, character-building moments. Furthermore, being able to effectively communicate the connection between the employer’s needs and your personality traits is imperative. The better your understanding of what skills and attributes make you unique, the more articulate you can be in an interview when it comes to answering the questions that count. So how do you become better at talking about yourself? You learn the universal language of the corporate world, of course! Career Services at the University of Calgary offers formal assessments to help you do just that- MBTI, Strong Interest, and StrengthsQuest can help you build a vocabulary around your unique attributes that recruiters will recognize. Find a way to focus your job search efforts to areas where your unique person will fit with a company’s needs (check out: “What Color is Your Parachute”- a resource I highly recommend). Finally, make sure what you want aligns with the jobs you’re searching for. You’re much more likely to build a sustainable career (and actually get the job in the first place) if you’re choosing a path that will spark your passions. So hang that degree up on the wall. Celebrate with your friends and family- you’ve earned it! But remember that the success of your job search relies on what can’t be read from your resume. In all the excitement of stepping foot into the big, exciting world of ties and professionalism, remember that your most important characteristics cannot be measured by grade point average. Instead, they are measured by the words you use to describe them and the experiences that have enhanced them. Remember that what the world is looking for is not your degree, it’s you. *According to Employment & Social Development Canada
