YOUR SUPPORT IS SAVING LIVES.
How October 7 emergency funds are being used.
Donations made to the American Friends of Magen David Adom Emergency Fund in the past year have been allocated for war- and terrorism-related response initiatives. This includes purchasing emergency vehicles, medical equipment, and supplies to treat the injured; programs to harden communities and MDA facilities and make them more resilient in future attacks; and initiatives designed to train new EMTs and shorten response times to medical emergencies even further.

One
year since October 7: Recalling loss, milestones, and selfless compassion.
Since the horrific morning of October 7, 2023, Magen David Adom teams have found themselves on the front lines of both combat and rescue. Over the past year, several of their stories of heroism and resilience have been shared in The Pulse, just a small sampling of the hundreds of stories of courage, rescue, incredible commitment, and loss.
Despite being surrounded by heavy fire, MDA paramedics and EMTs — more than 90% of them volunteers — bravely and tirelessly worked to save lives with endless dedication. They headed to the front lines without hesitation, even when knowing the real danger they faced. They entered areas overrun by terrorists, confronted pain head-on, and risked their lives to save others.
Some did not return from their mission — 36 men and women sacrificed their lives for others either on October 7 or in the ensuing year of war (see pages 6-7). Thirtythree members of MDA have been injured. Twenty of them are still in rehabilitation.
Eighteen ambulances were damaged on October 7, eight of which were completely destroyed. Yet MDA’s response never stopped for a moment. Since the beginning of the war, thanks to the help of American donors, MDA has expanded its fleet by some 600 new vehicles, including 189 ambulances (five of which are bulletproof) and 163 Mobile Intensive Care Units (two of which are bulletproof).
Additionally, 80 Medicycles, 10 blood donation vehicles, a seven-bed Mobile Intensive Care Bus (see page 5), and 41 emergency trailers equipped with lighting and generators
MDA IN ISRAEL
were added. This equipment enables MDA to be present in every corner of the country, providing a rapid and professional response, even under fire.
Since the war began, approximately 5,000 new volunteers joined MDA, including roughly 3,500 youth volunteers aged 15–18. In a time of uncertainty, MDA trained approximately 410,000 civilians in CPR and first aid, aiming to create a human safety net where anyone can be a lifesaver in critical moments.
MDA’s blood donation services collected more than 325,000 units of blood through donation drives across the country. All blood donations were meticulously tested and supplied to hospitals and to the IDF. Israel became the only country in the world to use whole blood directly in combat zones, saving the lives of both soldiers and civilians.
MDA’s Sussman Family Foundation Human Milk Bank provided more than four tons of milk to premature babies in need over the past year. Of that amount, more than half was given to infants directly affected by the war: babies whose mothers were injured, killed, kidnapped, or recruited for IDF duty.
Hundreds of training drills were conducted with MDA teams throughout the country. They prepared for worst-case scenarios, including providing critical care during electrical and communication outages, conducting evacuation exercises by train, boat, and helicopter, and treating the wounded under fire.

The “First Contractions” project was launched (see page 8). Approximately 50 midwives were trained and equipped to provide safe deliveries when other medical care is not available. Since the launch, several babies have been born with the assistance of these midwives, who arrived quickly to every call, bringing new life into the world, even under the harshest conditions.
Also during the war, the Magen Project was initiated, aiming to provide for an immediate response and accessible rapid medical care by community members in peripheral areas and cities. Thousands of emergency
response teams comprised of municipal workers, security personnel, and civilians were trained and equipped with medical supplies and vehicles. They can provide initial medical responses to their communities, serving as the first link in the chain of rescue.
“We are on the front lines in the battle for the lives of Israeli citizens,” said Eli Bin, MDA director-general. “When our people go out to save lives, they don't ask where the threat is or what the risk is — they focus on who needs help here and now. The losses we have suffered are a cause of great pain, but this pain only strengthens our motivation to fight for every person we can save.”
MDA marks one-year anniversary of October 7 with a tribute to its own fallen.
MDA held a ceremony to mark the one-year anniversary of the October 7 massacre. The event was held in memory of the 36 MDA volunteers and staff who were killed on that day or during the Iron Swords war (see pages 6-7). Prayers for the fallen were read by the fathers of Shir Biton (19), z"l, and Yarin Marie Peled (20), z"l, MDA volunteers who fell in battle.
Karina Engel, who was kidnapped on Black Saturday, shared her story. “That morning, the red alert sounded different; it didn’t stop. We locked ourselves in the safe room, and Ronen called his supervisor at MDA to ask where to go.
“Ronen prepared himself, got his gun, his MDA bag, and we began receiving messages that the terrorists were already in the kibbutz. He asked me to go into the safe room and lock the door — and that was the last time I saw him.”
Her husband, Ronen “Tommy” Engel, z”l, left their home that morning to assist the injured as an MDA responder. He fought against terrorists in their yard, was murdered, and his body was taken to Gaza. Karina was taken hostage alone and did not initially know her two daughters were also kidnapped. The girls were badly injured. One had several surgeries in Gaza. All of them, including Ronen’s body, were eventually released.

“Every day, we remember with pain and longing our heroes who fell in battle,” said Eli Bin, MDA directorgeneral. “We lost MDA volunteers, heroes who fell defending the homeland while serving in the security forces. We lost individuals filled with compassion and love for others, some with dreams of a bright future and others with a glorious history of action. We remember who they were, but the real pain is because of who they will no longer be.”
New intensive care bus transfers at-risk preemies in northern Israel to protected hospitals.
Magen David Adom’s new Mobile Intensive Care Bus, the first-of-its-kind in Israel, completed its first mission. Due to the security situation in northern Israel in September, MDA teams transferred premature infants from Carmel Medical Center to a protected underground neonatal unit at the Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa.
The new intensive care bus was designed and built based on lessons learned from October 7 and is equipped with seven beds and 10 seats. It has room for patients, patient escorts, specifically trained medical teams, and a variety of medical equipment and supplies. Patients are carried onto the bus via a unique hydraulic loading device.

The bus is equipped with a sophisticated system that provides oxygen to all patients at once, as well as advanced intensive care medications and equipment, including monitors, ventilation devices, resuscitation units, electric sockets next to each bed, and accommodation for an ECMO machine (a life support system that eases strain on the heart and lungs).
This is the first of three intensive care buses an anonymous contribution made to AFMDA is making possible. “It is our great honor to support MDA's lifesaving mission,” a member of the donor family said. The buses will be stationed in northern, southern, and central Israel. They will be used for transporting and treating a large number of patients or, when necessary, to transfer patients to and from hospitals across the country.

MDA and Israel Midwives Organization team up to provide care for births in the North.

Magen David Adom and the Israel Midwives Organization have embarked on a new project, “First Contractions,” to assist women going into labor. Initially, First Contractions is taking place in Northern Israel, due to the escalations in war there. The project is funded by the Jewish Federations of North America.
“The First Contractions project will enable an early acquaintance between the pregnant women who live in the shadow of war and the midwives in the region,” said Yifat Rubanenko, chair of the Israel Midwives Organization. “This will enable professional and holistic treatment even in the case of a birth developing at home and difficulty reaching a medical center.”
Out-of-hospital (OOH) births present increased risks, and in case of birth complications, the women must be evacuated to the hospital as soon as possible for further treatment.
“A complication in childbirth can end tragically for the woman giving birth and for the newborn, especially when it is an out-of-hospital birth,” said Dr. Raphael Strugo, MDA deputy director-general for medicine.
“As in every emergency medical situation, when there is an experienced caregiver on the scene, and in this case an experienced midwife, the event has a significantly better outcome, and that is the basis for this project.”
MDA has equipped midwives with the required equipment for safe OOH deliveries in routine and emergency situations. The midwives' information has been uploaded into MDA's Command and Control System, allowing for automatic dispatch in case of an emergency.
Two intensive training sessions were held, where some 50 midwives from the Golan Heights region and the Asher regional communities learned how to use the equipment and emergency dispatch system. The project is expected to expand significantly to other regions throughout the country.
In 2023, MDA transported 16,000-plus pregnant women to hospitals. More than 1,000 of them gave birth with help from MDA teams in their homes or on the way to the hospital.
U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan becomes MDA global president.

Upon completing an extraordinary and historic four-year tenure as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan has taken on a new role as global president of Magen David Adom.
“Ambassador Erdan’s passionate defense of Israel — bravely and relentlessly speaking
truth in a place where anti-Israel bias is institutionalized — inspires us all,” said Catherine Reed, chief executive officer of AFMDA.
After the October 7 Hamas attacks, Amb. Erdan became a leading voice for the victims and for Israel’s right to defend itself. At the U.N., he helped pass a resolution against Holocaust denial, marking only the second time an Israeli-led resolution was approved. He also served as vice president of the General Assembly.
“Magen David Adom is the backbone of Israel’s resilience,” he said. “The IDF is charged with protecting the borders. Magen David Adom protects the people inside those borders, including wounded soldiers.”
MDA and Blood Centers of America team up for unique blood drive partnership.
Two urgent needs have birthed a pioneering partnership: the United States needs blood, and Israel needs a blood insurance policy. Magen David Adom has signed an agreement with Blood Centers of America (BCA), the largest organization of independent blood centers in the country. If Israel cannot collect blood from its residents due to war, earthquake, or other unforeseen emergency, BCA will send blood to Israel. BCA has test-piloted getting units of U.S. blood on planes to Israel.
Israel has not yet needed blood from outside its borders, and we hope that remains the case. Low blood-donor participation in the U.S. has created an ongoing blood emergency here. Given this need and the desire by Israel supporters to contribute in meaningful ways to Israel, AFMDA launched the MDA/BCA Blood Drive Partnership.

As of October 15, more than 835 blood donors at 18 drives in nine different states have received certificates of appreciation from AFMDA on behalf of the people of Israel. The vast majority were new blood donors. We expect to have run 23 blood drives in 10 different states by mid-December 2024.
At each MDA/BCA blood drive, donors replenish the local supply, providing needed blood here at home, while ensuring BCA can deliver on an insurance policy we hope Israel never needs. Community leaders across the U.S. have reached out to organize blood drives, and BCA liaison Chaim Lebovits has provided guidance and introductions to local blood centers.
Blood donor David Winter expressed the palpable enthusiasm at these drives, stating he was “proud to give blood in support of American Friends of Magen David Adom and future needs in Israel.”

AFMDA supporters visit Israel in solidarity.

In May, more than 20 people participated in an AFMDA National Solidarity Mission to Israel. Going to Israel during ongoing war and in the midst of continued pain and heartbreak was not easy, however, the participants came with love and support, ready to bear witness.
The journey began with an invitation to the VIP Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Ceremony at Yad Vashem, attended by Israel’s president and prime minister. Listening to the leaders and six Holocaust survivors against the backdrop of the current conflict was deeply moving, underscoring the significance of Israel's existence as the world's only Jewish state.
The trip ventured to the south to tour Kibbutz Nir Oz and the Nova Music Festival site. There, participants stood in Mor Tzarfati's torched kitchen, listening to her recount that dreadful day, when she held shut the broken door handle to her family’s safe room for nine excruciating hours, saving her family, as her home was set ablaze by terrorists.
The group also met with hostage families and with families of those who did not survive on October 7. Attendees prepared meals for soldiers and visited with MDA’s Medevac Unit. They toured the William H. Bloomberg Jerusalem MDA Emergency Medical Station and the Marcus National Blood Services Center, which became fully operational just one day after the start of the war.

The five-day whirlwind trip ended with a meeting with President Isaac Herzog at his private residence. He praised Magen David Adom and the vital work its 36,000 men and women do caring for the people of Israel.

AFMDA mourns the passing of Bernie Marcus, z”l.

American Friends of Magen David Adom mourns the passing of Bernard “Bernie” Marcus, an inspirational philanthropist and masterful businessman who left a profound legacy of dedicated giving to Israel and the Jewish people.
One of our most significant supporters, he and his wife, Billi, provided the lead gift for the construction of the Marcus National Blood Services Center in Ramla, the world’s first underground blood bank.
Bernie’s insight to the vulnerability of MDA’s old blood bank in Ramat Gan during a weeklong conflict with Hamas in 2012 was his inspiration to support the new blood services center. “On a visit many years ago to Israel’s blood bank, amid the missile and rocket attacks, I realized how delicate and vulnerable the blood system was,” he said.
“I am happy that we participated, from the very start, in the construction of this wonderful building, where Israel’s blood supply will be protected for all its citizens, Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike.”
The lives of countless Israelis have been saved thanks to the generosity of Bernie and Billi Marcus, and their transformational gift to MDA. The Marcus Center protects Israel’s blood supply from missiles, biological and chemical attacks, and earthquakes. Its expanded size allows MDA’s Blood Services Division to double the national annual blood supply. The Marcus Center also houses the Sussman Family Foundation Human Milk
Bank. While various departments began working in the center after its dedication in May 2022, the Marcus Center became fully operational just a day after the October 7, 2023 brutal Hamas invasion.
“Bernie Marcus was an extraordinary man of great compassion, a devoted friend, a passionate supporter of Israel, and a visionary philanthropist,” said Catherine Reed, AFMDA’s chief executive officer. “He loved the State of Israel and was dedicated to its advancement, safety, and security. He will be sorely missed, but the impact of his legacy will endure for generations.”

Born into a Russian Jewish immigrant family in 1929, Bernie grew up the youngest of four children in a tenement in Newark, New Jersey. Though his family was poor, his mother taught him the value of tzedakah and giving back.
His dream was to become a doctor, a psychiatrist, specifically, after attending pharmacy school, but restrictions against Jews in medical schools led him to a business career. He went on to found the world’s largest home improvement retailer, The Home Depot, in 1979, a company that revolutionized the home improvement business. Bernie served as The Home Depot’s first CEO and was chairman until his retirement in 2002.

The Singer family comes together in support of Israel.

In the aftermath of Hamas’ brutal attack on October 7, 2023, members of the Singer family heard about the multiple Magen David Adom ambulances that were destroyed during those first few days of the invasion. They felt compelled to come together as a family and do whatever they could to show their solidarity and support to help our brothers and sisters in Israel.
The family immediately reached out to American Friends of Magen David Adom to sponsor three Life Support Ambulances and to contribute funds to purchase essential
medical supplies and equipment. The ambulances were donated in memory of beloved family members: Bernice and Irving Singer, Gary Singer, Gail Singer, and Jordan Singer.
Passionate supporters of Israel, the Singers are spread out across the Eastern United States: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida. But distance does not deter their commitment to one another or to Israel.
The Singer family credits their immense commitment and devotion to the Jewish community to their beloved parents, Bernice and Irving Singer. Bernice and Irving taught their seven children, by example, to take care of one another and to take care of their Jewish community and the greater Jewish community at large.
“Our family believes it’s an honor to donate these ambulances to ensure that Magen David Adom is ready and able to continue its exceptional and heroic work for the people of Israel,” said Joy Singer Sydney.
Jane and Mark Wilf are champions for Israel and the Jewish people.

Jane and Mark Wilf, through the Wilf Family Foundations, are unwavering in their support of Israel and deeply committed to AFMDA’s mission of saving lives in wartime and peace. They have been champions of Magen David Adom for many years. Their generous contributions include supporting the construction of the Marcus National Blood Services Center and providing training opportunities for paramedics and first responders via the Wilf Education Center in Ramla, Israel.
As recognized supporters and leaders of numerous charitable organizations, the Wilfs’ decision to get involved
with AFMDA and support the blood center was personal.
“My mother, Lois, initially motivated us to get involved,” said Jane. “From her fundraising with AFMDA’s Dinner Committee to her investment of countless hours in support of MDA’s lifesaving efforts in Israel, my mother’s passion for this work was and continues to be an inspiration.
“Today, we remain involved because we have witnessed firsthand MDA’s positive impact on the lives of Israelis.
Following October 7, the need for their blood services and emergency aid has only increased, and it has been an honor to contribute to AFMDA in times of great need.”
Long renowned for their philanthropy, the Wilfs strive to ensure the welfare and vitality of the Jewish community in North America, in Israel, and worldwide. Jane and Mark are guided by the values instilled by their parents and continue to honor their legacies through philanthropy and advocacy for the ever-changing needs of the Jewish people, wherever they may be.

The New York Gala Is Back!
After a five-year hiatus, the New York Gala made a triumphant return in September, drawing nearly 600 attendees for a truly unforgettable and inspiring evening. From the moment guests entered Cipriani 42nd Street, they were transported to the bustling and vibrant atmosphere of an Israeli shuk (marketplace), where they indulged in an authentic culinary experience.
Hosted by actress and Israel advocate Debra Messing, the event celebrated the unwavering dedication and generosity of the evening’s supporters. Noa Cochva, a former Miss Israel and current IDF combat medic trained by MDA, shared her inspiring story of service during Operation Iron Swords.

The highlight of the night was a heartfelt tribute to MDA paramedic Amit Man, who was gunned down by terrorists while bravely working to save the lives of others. Fellow paramedic Oshrit Hadad traveled from Israel to honor Amit’s memory, sharing her personal reflections of her close friend’s legacy of courage and compassion.
Philanthropist and former N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloomberg was honored for his monumental matching gift contribution of $44 million following October 7, and

Bank of America was recognized for its significant support and commitment to combating antisemitism.
Newly appointed MDA Global President Gilad Erdan, former Israel ambassador to the U.N., expressed his pride in leading the organization; the Shvesters captivated the audience with their powerful musical performances; while actor and Israel advocate Nate Buzz brought the evening to a close, leaving the audience both entertained and inspired to continue supporting MDA’s lifesaving mission.

The event demonstrated solidarity, unity, and commitment to Israel during this critical time.
South Florida celebrates MDA in Colorado.
Some 350 people, many of whom were from South Florida and spend their summer in Aspen, Colo., came together for MDA in the Mountains. Spearheaded by leadership from South Florida, the evening featured a compelling discussion between Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of a Hamas founder turned Shin Bet informant, and Israeli journalist and “Fauda” creator Avi Issacharoff.
Before the program, the Deshe and Diamond families dedicated a Mobile Intensive Care Unit ambulance (see page 14), setting the tone for a night of impactful giving. Significant funds were raised to support the Magen Project, training and equipping community-based rescue teams, as well as for a new “Pony,” an electric-powered compact rescue vehicle. We are grateful to the attendees from all over the country and organizers, especially the host committee and Chabad of Aspen. At this time of uncertainty and escalating violence in Israel, your support is deeply appreciated.

Los Angeles community and Wilshire Boulevard Temple commemorate October 7 a year later.

On October 7, 2024, AFMDA partnered with Wilshire Boulevard Temple (WBT) to commemorate the horrific day and highlight the impact of philanthropy by showcasing the positive support of the Los Angeles community. Within one week of the tragedy of October 7, more than 435 congregants and families of WBT made it possible to sponsor seven ambulances. The synagogue’s ambulance campaign was led by Rabbis Steve Leder and Joel Nickerson. Leadership matches were made by Jaime and Andrew Schwartzberg and the Karen and Russell Goldsmith Family Charitable Trust.
Before being shipped to Israel, three of the seven ambulances spent the day in Los Angeles, driving across town, beginning with visits to the WBT West schools, stopping at the October 7 Memorial Square in Beverly Hills, and concluding at the WBT Glazer Campus to visit with the East Campus and for the commemorative event. The ambulances were formally dedicated in a private ceremony (see page 19), followed by a community event with hundreds of attendees, which featured songs and prayers as well as remarks by Senior Rabbi Joel Nickerson; MDA’s Director of International Relations Yoni Yagodovsky; and congregants, including actress Ginnifer Goodwin.

Paul and Joyce Krasnow and Rabbi Joel Newman inspired the congregants to provide the lifesaving vehicles to MDA’s fleet.

San Diego holds special fundraiser featuring the “Green Prince.”

AFMDA held an inaugural fundraising event in San Diego at the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. Prior to the event an ambulance sponsored by the San Diego community was dedicated (see page 18).
Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of a founder of Hamas, was the keynote speaker. Dubbed the “Green Prince” by the Shin Bet to denote the color of the Hamas flag and his pedigree as the son of one of the movement’s founders, the once-key undercover agent for Israel kept the 300 attendees spellbound.
Dr. Roneet Lev, chief medical officer for the Center of Community Research, was the event’s honoree. In response to October 7, Dr. Lev traveled to Israel twice to serve as a medical volunteer with MDA. Additionally, MDA paramedic Lior Levi gave an account of treating the injured under fire on October 7, followed by a touching video message from a patient he saved.

Danielle Avidan’s commitment to philanthropy honors her mother’s legacy.

For Danielle Avidan, life is a tapestry woven with friendships, family, joy, and purpose. A longtime Magen David Adom donor, she has dedicated herself to supporting Jewish causes that create a meaningful impact in the U.S. and Israel. Her philanthropic journey is deeply influenced by her desire to invest in future generations and celebrate the artistic legacy of her late mother, Anna Mireille Abitbol, z”l. Born in Morocco and educated in France, Danielle’s early career included work in advertising at Revlon-Paris and public relations for the Hilton Hotel in Morocco. After moving to the U.S. and marrying Bernard Avidan, she continued her global career following his passing in 1994.
In retirement, Danielle, who lives in Los Angeles, focused on honoring her mother’s artistic achievements. Abitbol’s oils and watercolors are now housed in the Getty Museum and at UCLA, ensuring her talent is preserved for future generations.
For more than 18 years, Danielle has been a steadfast supporter of Magen David Adom. Her commitment is reflected not only in her years of giving but also in her decision to include AFMDA as a beneficiary of her estate.
As a proud member of the Legacy Circle, Danielle’s story is a powerful reminder that philanthropy is about ensuring our values endure even beyond our lifetime. Through her generosity, she honors her mother’s legacy while investing in the future of Israel, creating a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
