light box
light exhibition/art performance Torquay Foreshore, Surfcoast
In recent years, the profound significance of art, culture, and community has been brought into sharp focus.
This Box, as a vessel, is designed to amplify light and power of art delivering messages. An exhibition of light explores how we experience and psychologically respond to illumination and colour, and also encompasses more conceptual and political concerns.
The architectural form of the pavilion presents a stark rectilinear exterior, encapsulating a contrasting circular “space within the space” at its core. This design draws inspiration from the primal tradition of communal gatherings around a campfire, and is further influenced by the asymmetrical, egg-shaped lounge of Villa Snellman, designed by Swedish architect, Eric Gunnar Asplund, in 1917.
Central to the design of the “Light Box Project” is its innovative use of materials, primarily featuring a transparent, freestanding Danpal polycarbonate structure. This choice creates an illusion of transparency, inviting viewers into a seemingly open space. A strategic air gap between the luminous outer panels and the steel-framed internal structure enhances control over lighting, acoustics, and atmosphere, also providing concealed space for electrical systems and insulation. This dual-layered approach ensures an immersive experience, where every element is meticulously designed for artistic expression and sensory engagement.
