AFL South East AFL Victoria launch She Can Coach program AFL Victoria is proud to announce the launch of its She Can Coach program.

The new initiative, supported by the Victorian Government’s Change Our Game initiative, is designed to invest in the development of the next wave of talented female coaches in Victoria.

A total of 17 coaches have been identified through TAC Cup, Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s and AFLW environments to be part of the program, from retired players to current senior and assistant coaches.

AFL Victoria Education and Training Manager Lauren Arnell said the program is a chance to develop some of our up-and-coming female coaches.

“We believe it is vitally important that we invest in female coaches in the talent pathway,” Arnell said.

“This program will provide opportunities for retired or retiring players to stay involved in the game and provide them with the tools and networks to further develop their coaching.

“Regardless of how far each coach progresses beyond Victorian based competitions, we know that this learning, mentoring and networking opportunity will immediately and directly have a positive impact on our existing players, clubs and competitions.

“We see this as not only a direct investment in the program participants but also those who are looking to coach in our talent competitions and beyond.”

As part of the program, each coach will be paired with a mentor, with the mentors selected from various levels of sport and business. Mentors will share their experiences and provide advice and feedback to the She Can Coach participants.

Coaches in the program will learn AFL strategy and trends, be exposed to scenarios of day-to-day coaching at the top level, have access to online courses specifically targeting coaching and receive advice about developing and applying for roles in the future.

AFL Victoria Coaching Development Manager Steve Teakel said the program investment goes further than just the coaches involved.

“This direct investment will also reflect on those who, in the future, are considering coaching in our competitions and see the visibility of our investment not only in our players but our coaches as well,” Teakel said.

“These coaches will be role models beyond their own players and clubs, and we will also look to engage them in future coach presentations, mentoring and development opportunities.”

Head of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation Dr Bridie O’Donnell said she is looking forward to the She Can Coach program.

“The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation is excited to be working with organisations such as AFL Victoria to develop female talent in underrepresented areas such as coaching,” O’Donnell said.

Coaches will attend their first session on Monday August 13, with follow-up sessions to occur in October and December.

AFL Vic Country AFL Victoria is pleased to announce that it has recently pledged $2.76 million in AFL funding to dozens of local football facility projects across Victoria.

Sixty-two projects will receive funding which will help generate $97 million total new investment in local football facilities.

Projects that best link directly to AFL Victoria’s Football Facilities Development Strategy, support female football and increase ground capacity to cater for our evergrowing participation have been successful in securing part of the $2.76 million funding allocation.

AFL Victoria CEO, Steven Reaper said the funding was just one of many initiatives supporting grass roots football and was key in ensuring all Victorian’s have the opportunity to participate in football across the state.

“Community football is the lifeblood of our sport and with our participation rates growing year on year and with female football booming, the provision of welcoming facilities that can cater for this growth is critical,” he said.

“Whether it is new lights, oval surface upgrades or female friendly changerooms, these spaces require upgrades so that our volunteer led clubs can continue to deliver their incredibly important services to their communities.”

Projects such as Brimbank City Council’s Female Friendly Change Room Upgrades at Lionheart, Keilor Park and John McLeod Reserves will create inviting and safe female friendly/ unisex change rooms for participants, spectators and officials to enjoy and maximise female participation.

More than 1,200 participants from the Taylors Lakes, Deer Park and Keilor Park Football Clubs consisting of NAB AFL Auskick participants, junior mixed and boys teams and senior male and female teams will reap the benefits from such a project.

“The AFL’s contribution of this funding is part of the AFL’s ongoing contribution to community football facilities.

Since 2007, the AFL/AFL Victoria have invested more than $16 million in funding to generate $300 million in investment in this important infrastructure,” he said.

“I would also like to thank the Clubs, Region Commissions, Leagues and Councils for their work on developing these projects and bringing them to our attention, as well as the work they do with all levels of government to forward plan for our game and their communities.”

Projects will now be submitted to various State Government and other funding programs to secure the additional funding to enable them to proceed.

AFL Victoria has developed the following strategic priorities to guide the development of football facilities across the state. These link more broadly to the AFL’s development objectives Priority 1 Increase the quality/functionality and maximise the carrying capacity of existing facilities.

Priority 2 Plan and develop new facilities in key growth areas across the state.

Priority 3 Capitalise on opportunities to create Administration Centres/regional hubs, provide venues for talent pathway and competitions and protect landmark sites in key locations.

Priority 4 Ensure facilities are catering for the diversity of participants, particularly female participants, attracted to our game.

Priority 5 Continue to enhance our relationship with Government (particularly local Government) in the planning and provision of facilities.

AFL Victoria is being guided by three key principles with regards to improving and developing.

In addition, sports funding offered to Melton Council will see the creation of Eynesbury’s first ever football ground.

With the community growing to over 3,000 people, the new ground will see its junior football club have a home of their own.

Footy Preview A time for a little reflection

By David Nagel Today is a day to reflect on the 14-year history of the Casey Cardinia/South East Football Netball League as we play our last home-and-away game in a competition that has provided so many wonderful memories over the years.

Originally set up as a 12-team competition in 2005, Dingley departed at the end of 2006, followed by Devon Meadows in 2011, Keysborough 2014, before Hampton Park followed the steps of the Dingoes and Borough and made the move to the Southern Football League at the end of last year.

It leaves us with eight clubs that have fought so many wonderful battles over the years, with some to continue their rivalries under different competition banners in the future.

On behalf of this scribe, thanks clubs for the memories.

It’s been a wonderful ride, forged on competition at the its core – but decorated with highs and lows and friendships that will last a lifetime.

A little tear just hit the keyboard – so we better move on!

Today’s last round of home-and-away football just may be the best we’ve seen in 2018.

We go down in pairs from the top of the ladder, with Berwick hosting Narre Warren, Cranbourne for Beaconsfield, while Tooradin-Dalmore and Doveton will roll out the welcome mat for Officer and Pakenham respectively.

It would be totally disrespectful to write off a great club like Cranbourne, but today’s battle between Berwick and Narre Warren at Edwin Flack Reserve looks set to be a grand final preview.

At first glance the Magpies would appear to have been the dominant team this season, standing two games clear at the top of the ladder, but a closer inspection would suggest otherwise.

Just .37 percent separates these two teams after 15 rounds of football, with a narrow Berwick victory today likely to see those figures become even closer.

Don’t underestimate those figures – because there’s something in the waters that tells me there’s going to be an extra-time classic fought out between the Magpies and Wickers at some stage during the finals series.

Just imagine if it was the big one!

Nick Lang will be hoping for drier conditions and a big win against Officer today.

Both teams have done it differently, with the Magpies the highest scoring team in the competition up against the best defensive practices of coach Stewart Kemperman and the Berwick Football Club.

The Magpies are a free-scoring beast, with Nick and Stewie Scanlon contributing 66 goals between them, with Aaron Wilson, Mitch Cox, Tom Miller, Trent Shinners and Trent Cody not shy to hit the scoreboard.

The Magpies best-ever player, Michael Collins, is having one of the most consistent years of his career, while Brad Scalzo and Josh Tonna can weave magic with their lethal left feet.

That’s a combination that would be intimidating for most clubs – but not Berwick.

Footy Preview The Wickers are the reigning champs – winning two of the last three premierships – and have the class to go all the way again this season.

Narre Warren started SEFNL as the irresistible force, winning six of the first nine premierships, but if the Wickers can win three of the last four then they sign off as one the best teams to play in the competition.

Don’t fear - these two have built up a massive rivalry over the years and the lasting legacy of this era of both football clubs will be very high on the agenda as we enter the month of September.

Skipper Madi Andrews has had a remarkable second-half of the season for the Wickers, while the pure class and quality of Ash Smith, Travis Tuck, Bryce Rutherford and James Magner has all been seen on a higher stage.

Does Jordy Andrews return after a massive 16-goal haul against Doveton reserves last week, or does Kemperman stick with the 35-goal set up of the senior side?

Harry Money kicked nine, and has the league goal-kicking at his mercy, while Tim Gunn joined Magner in kicking four sausage rolls.

Class determines that this will be a great contest, but the stick-and-jab might be more prominent than the massive haymakers we witness at the pointy end of the season.

The Magpies have a week off after this, so will be keen for a decent hit out, while the Wickers can take this one as they please.

They can’t move from second and are already locked away for a massive showdown against Cranbourne next week.

It’s the Magpies to win by 13 points.

Casey Fields will provide the canvas for another big game of football today when Cranbourne host Beaconsfield in a perfect pipe-opener to finals football for both clubs.

Cranbourne wasn’t overly impressive in a 34-point victory over Pakenham last week, while Beacy played some of its best footy of the season in an 82-point victory over Tooradin.

Beacy coach Leigh McQuillen has been a massive supporter of youth in his time at the club, and hasn’t been afraid to put a few noses out of joint along the journey.

He just has trust and belief in the vibrancy that young footballers can bring, and has unleashed another couple of hidden gems in recent times.

Jesse Patullo and Sam Merrick kicked six between them against the Seagulls last week, in their third and second games respectively.

Nathan Langley, who built his reputation on big-game performances with Cora Lynn, booted four, to match the output of the impressive Riley Verbi, who has had a great season in his first year out of 19s.

Verbi has kicked 18 goals in his last seven games and covers a stack of ground on his travels.

Cranbourne, well it has no shortage of players that can play on him today.

Cranny’s defence provided the most impressive aspect of its win against the Lions last week, with Dillan Bass, Brandon and Glenn Osborne, Jordy Bertrand and Brandon Wapshott shutting down the home side, who did have their share of the footy.

Beacy stalwart Josh Dodsworth will have a big role to play against Cranbourne.

Marc Holt booted four, Nathan Gardiner three, while Zak Roscoe played a great game, covering a stack of ground – in quick time – form centre wing to the forward line.

His x-factor and line-breaking skills are going to be very important for Steve O’Brien going forward, particularly with Ryan Jones currently sitting on the sidelines.

Both teams have very little to play for here, both locked away for the first away for the first week of the finals.

Beacy would love to claim a scalp on the eve of a big month of footy, and will really push Cranny – but class will prevail with the home side to win by 15 points.

Officer faces a tricky assignment as it warms up for its first finals campaign in the 14-year history of SEFNL when the Kangaroos bound down the South Gippsland Highway to take on Tooradin.

The Kangaroos were blown away by Narre Warren last week, but can head into next week’s elimination final against Beaconsfield with a real spring in their step if they can get over the Seagulls today.

Doug Koop has a core group of players that he can rely on, with Steve Heppel impressive in his first year at the club joining Blair Allan, James Waldon, Sean Roach, Ben Tivendale, Matty Clarke and Matt Rogers on that initial checklist.

But it’s what Koop and his able-assistant Billy King can get out of that next group of players that will determine if they can make their mark in the finals.

Footy Preview Harris Wasslkyo, Jake Ingaliso, Ben Curtiss and Steve Hawkins shouldn’t underestimate their ability to have a huge impact in the coming weeks.

Tooradin believes is it the best team outside the top four and would love to prove it against the Kangaroos today.

Julian Suarez, Michael Hobbs, Adam Galea and Jake O’Donnell have poured their heart and soul into this club over the years and would love to sign off in SEFNL with big performances.

If things go their way, Tooradin will be plying its trade in the West Gippsland Football League next year and we wish the Seagulls all the best of luck.

The Gulls provided one of the great stories in 2012 when, under Tommy Hallanan, they progressed all the way through to a preliminary final.

It was David versus Goliath of the highest order.

They’ve provided some wonderful players like Matty Wade and the late Beau Miller and past-president Derek Genoni needs to be commended for his undying passion for his footy club.

We’ve had some run ins over the years Derek, but your passion can never be questioned and we wish you all the best – enjoy the success as it comes the clubs way over the coming years.

Sorry Seagulls…it won’t be a happy sign off – it’s the Kangas by four points.

And two clubs that were huge powerhouses in the initial stages of Casey Cardinia/SEFNL – Doveton and Pakenham – finish off with their now traditional White Ribbon Round contest at Robinson Oval.

Doveton provided the first great team in the Casey Cardinia Football League, going through the 2005 season undefeated on their way to winning the premiership.

Great judges, such as Pakenham and Interleague legend Michael ‘Jock’ Holland, rate that Doveton team as the best he has seen in his time in local football.

That’s a bloody big call, but justified when you listen to him talk about the quality that Steve Henwood had at his disposal.

Jock led to the Lions to their only premiership in Casey Cardinia in 2009, defeating the Doves and – it’s fair to say – neither club has really been the same ever since.

They’ve both played finals but never really been a serious contender.

Their next premierships will be built around youth with Liam Tyrrell, Darcy Hope, Brayden Carr, Hugh Skinner and Eli Tyrrell to drive the Lions forward, while Mitch Cotter, Tyson Bellinger and Shannon Brennan could have a similar impact for the Doves.

Pakenham can jump into sixth place today and finish its season on a high, not a bad effort considering the mass exodus of players over the last two years. Ash Green has done a great job of stabilising the club and he will be rewarded today with a 43-point victory.

Footy Notes Beaconsfield In what was possibly the worst conditions all season last week we managed to get the job done against Tooradin.

It was our last home game for the year before we close out against Cranbourne today The Under 19s kicked off against an undermanned Tooradin outfit however great respect was shown to even the sides up. Tyson Robbo played in a ruck role giving away about 1 foot in height however managed to dominate through out the day. Big Brooke snagged a few goals and classy forward Cody Weightman came back into the line up.

WELL DONE to the boys who played and supported Tooradin The reserves kicked off with big Mitch Welsh acting in a playing coach role again and showed his poise around a number of contests. The boys played excellent footy to come away with the win ensuring a finals berth is locked in now The senior boys starting to get a few players back and building into finals action dominated the day after a slow start. Lead by first game coach Luke Young the team responded very well managing a comfortable 82 point win which was great result for the day.

Today we head to Cranbourne optimistic with things starting the work being 1 each a piece we need to win today to show we can be finals contenders. With a number of the 19s on reserves and seniors duties it will be a tough day for the 19s however will field a good team with anticipations of getting it done This week we were saddened with the passing of one of our clubs great and life member . John Bailey (JB) sadly passed away. John who was an illustrious leader and very parochial supporter of the club will be sadly missed at the footy club. Our sincere condolences to his family and all of his close friends The team will wear black arm bands in tribute to JB today and have 1 minutes silence in the rooms before each game to mark the level of respect we have for JB GO Beacy lets do it for JB

and presenting opportunities for several players to demonstrate ‘what else they can do’. Jesse Davies and Coxy were up forward; Richo spent more time in the ruck - and we got the jump to open up a five goal lead by quarter time. A tight and scrappy second term was pretty even on the scoreboard, as Officers’ defence dug in and pushed us wide. But Narre made some adjustments and kicked five goals to none in third quarter before finishing off well for a 14 goal win.

Coxy dominated the front half with six goals and ‘best on’ honors; our on-ballers hit the scoreboard (Cody 3 goals, Foote 2); and Officer had few answers for Josh Tonna’s creativity or Matt Soz’s run and carry. It wasn’t pretty, but in the end we played well and won well. Congratulations to young Dylan Webber on an impressive senior debut.

In the Twos, Narre’s forwards met little resistance as ten individual goalkickers contributed to our 20-goal win.

Mitch Cowan (5 goals) and Daniel Jackson (4) led the charge, served well from the midfield by Kyle Graham, Mitch Van de Loop and the “Junkyard Dog’ Tommy Toner.

The win sets up a huge final round clash with Berwick for minor premiership honors today, with only percentage separating the two teams.

Officer forfeited the Under 19s match.

Coming events This Saturday 18 August. 7.30 pm. Narre Night. $15 entry – always a big social night for our footballers and netballers and their friends.

Narre Warren At our VIP day at Fox Road last week we hosted several politicians, sponsors, volunteers and local junior club members to showcase our club and to pay recognition for their support. In particular we thank all our dedicated committee, and the many volunteers who have helped out on match day and around the club all season, in doing the many jobs involved in fielding our teams and putting on our show each week.

Again our teams played some good footy to register strong wins in both Seniors and Reserves.

Last week we ventured to Doveton and secured a couple of strong wins. No U/19s so the boys had a second bye.

Well done to Jordy who booted 16 and in the Resi’s and Harry 9 in the seniors.

Also a great night had by all at the Netball Club run Frat Party. Big turnout and a fun night.

This weeks will see us play Narre at home for the second time this year. Its the launch pad for our 2018 Finals campaign and a big game is expected as we look for momentum heading into the finals.

The reserves are playing for top spot whilst the under 19s can secure a Top 2 finish and double chance if they secure a big win.

This week is also our 3rd Coterie function for the year so welcome to all the coterie members today.

The football club has also secured the hosting rights for the 2018 SEFNL Grand Final on September 15th. We may or may not be playing on the day but regardless we will require helpers on the day. If you are able to support the committee please let one of the committee members know. Even an hour or day on the day will help.

Heading into the last round we find ourselves in the unusual position of knowing this will not be our last game of football for the season as we prepare to head to final for the first time in 14 years.

Being in this position was a goal we had set ourselves at the beginning of the season and one which are very happy to have achieved.

This weekend we head down the highway to face Tooradin for what could potentially be the last time our two clubs meet in an official capacity. Last time we met Tooradin it was a wet and windy affair with both teams battling it out for a draw. This week we aim to go one better.

Off field the club has decided to postpose our final function for the year, originally scheduled to be held this Saturday night (August 18th). The function will now be held on the Saturday following our final game.

Other upcoming events to put into the calendar include TBC – ROCest 100 Social Event Friday 21 September – Presentation Night Tickets for both events can be purchased from the club on Thursday nights Good luck to all our team this weekend as we take on Tooradin.

Pakenham Seniors It was great to see another debutant play his first senior game in Eli Tyrrell who has been in terrific form in the u19’s and with his brother Liam in the side, the future of the club is in safe hands.

While we didn’t get the result we were after, the boys were able to stay in the contest right to the very end & the supporters would have been pleased in the fact the guys had a red hot go.

Best players were Stephen Morey, Jake Barclay, Jimmy Harrison, Liam Tyrrell & JJ Peni with Jake Thompson kicking 2 goals.

With a heavy focus on development, 39 players played seniors over the year while 12 from the u19’s had a taste so with a very young & talented list being assembled, the club has exciting times ahead.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful supporters, members, sponsors, volunteers and football family for the dedication & commitment to the club over the year and we look forward to the continued support next year.

Reserves A win today and we were still in the finals race, a loss and the dream of finals in 2018 would be over. Cranbourne kicked the first goal of the game within 30 seconds and set the tone for the rest of the day. They were well drilled, quick moving and controlled the game all day. With one game to go and finals too far away, our aim is to finish the year off with a win.

“The partnership between Melbourne and SEJ is very exciting for both parties, with Melbourne looking to work closely with the SEJ to provide pathways for elite talent, but at the same time encourage and develop the participation of football at all levels, “ Maynard said.

“Melbourne Football Club and the Casey Demons are excited to be involved in the partnership, and we’re in it for the long haul.

“Recent funding will help us take our facilities to the next level and provide opportunities for SEJ participants that we only could have dreamed of in the past. We look forward to the coming years and to see how the program develops.”

South East Juniors The scenes were dominated by smiles at Pakenham on Sunday after Kooweerup made its way to consecutive grand finals with an 18-point victory over Nar Nar Goon.

Craven said that applying pressure was important against quality opposition like Nar Nar Goon, and his team executed perfectly.

The two best teams in Under-12 White fought out a terrific second semi-final, the Goon getting off to a great start before the Demons pegged their way back in the second quarter.

“They’re a good side, they run pretty good, but our boys really wanted that game today. I’m very big on tackling and applying pressure on the opposition and the tackling was unbelievable today, the best they’ve tackled in three years I reckon.

Some great tackling and wonderful team play gave the Demons the edge in the second half, running out 4.1.25 to 1.1.7 winners.

“They’re a good team and they finished second on the ladder for a reason, and did beat us earlier in the year at their ground by four points,” he said.

“They were like a bunch of Bulls out their today.”

Coach Aaron Craven started the journey with this team three years ago in the under 11s.

The proud coach said the most important thing for him was that the kids enjoyed their footy, but that making the grand final was pretty satisfying.

The developing Demons finished bottom of the ladder in 2016, before making their way to the Under-11 White grand final against Endeavour Hills last year.

“The kids are going to feel this, they’re up and about and they’ll be like that for the next two weeks,” Craven said.

The result didn’t go their way, but the young Demons thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have worked hard to get back to the big stage.

“It’s fantastic for the team, we’ve been three years at it now, we were runners-up last year and they’re pretty determined to go one better this time around,” Craven said.

“They played like a team today, they played really well, and that’s all a coach can ask for.”

“We lost two weeks ago and the boys really felt it, it hurt them, so to come out and make the grand final is fantastic - but the job is only half done.”

Before signing off, Craven wanted to thank his team manager Amanda, his assistant and first-aider Matt, and all the parents that have helped out and got their children to training throughout the year.

Kooweerup will take on the winner of tomorrow’s preliminary final between Nar Nar Goon and Cora Lynn.

Craven took time to reflect on his first season with the group, and the rapid improvement they have made ever since.

“We only had half a side in the first year, we won no games and were getting beaten by 100 points but the team has steadily improved,” he said.

“Some kids had never played footy before, but they’ve learnt to get their hands on the footy, to kick and handball, but more importantly they really work hard together as a team.

“That’s where success comes from, if they play together as a team they’re going to do pretty well.”

Kooweerup just had the upper hand over Nar Nar Goon in the second semi-final at Pakenham on Sunday.

Netball Preview Can the Kangas bounce out of the blocks?

By David Nagel ROC needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat if it wants to play finals this year when the Kangaroos travel to the Tooradin Recreation Reserve today to take on the Seagulls.

The Kangaroos faced a massive task with two rounds to go in the season, needing to defeat either Narre Warren or Tooradin to take their place in this year’s finals series.

The Kangas fell oh so close against the Magpies last week, losing 44-46, and now need to defeat the Seagulls on the rebound to finish in fifth place on the ladder and take on Doveton next week.

And this is all assuming that Beaconsfield plays its part and rolls current top-five incumbent Cranbourne!

As you can see, the Kangas are right up against it!

Players like Zoe Callanan, Sarah Castricum, Alysson Jeanes, Laura Quinn, Georgie Douglas, Jamilah Ferns and skipper Mel Overdyk have given their all for the Kangas this year, and won’t go down without a fight.

The Kangaroos have a better percentage than both Doveton and Cranbourne and fully deserve their topfive ranking if they pull out a big one today. It won’t be easy because Tooradin is still the benchmark team in the competition despite their 11-goal loss to Beaconsfield last week.

Kelly Andrews held a bit back last week, but you can guarantee that Jess Cox, Bec Kinna, Emma Iacovou, Sara Duncan and Alex Duff will be keen to put things right when the Seagulls and Eagles meet again.

The Seagulls will meet the challenge today, and end the Kangaroos season with a 10-goal victory.

Beaconsfield was the talk of the town after last week’s emphatic triumph over Tooradin and will look to continue that form against Cranbourne today.

Beacy makes the trip to Casey Fields full of confidence, with Kaela Hughes, Zoe Mason, Abbie Sheers, Rylee Nelson, Dani Cameron, Bianca Sanzaro and Dani Fedel having had great seasons across the board.

Beaconsfield has been close to premiership glory in recent years and last week’s win would indicate that this could be the season when they finally turn things around.

Running into Narre Warren and Tooradin for the last four seasons hasn’t been easy for the Eagles.

Cranbourne had to work hard for an eight-goal victory over Pakenham last week and will need to lift the bar to trouble Beacy today.

Donna Wilson has a solid core at her disposal with Nat Sparks and Tegan Stahl having played every game this season, while Tahlia Coates has also delivered on a weekly basis.

Sara Duncan and her Tooradin teammates will look to bounce back against ROC today.

Win or lose, Cranny should be safe in fifth spot and take on Doveton next week in the elimination final at Berwick.

They would love to go in as winners, but they won’t – it’s Beacy to win by six goals.

Narre Warren survived a tough encounter against ROC last week and will be match-hardened when the Magpies take to the court against Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Celebrations were almost put on hold for club captain Erin Clark last week and she rolled out for 200th game for the club.

The Magpies were pushed, but showed enough composure in the dying minutes to stave off the Kangaroos’ challenge.

Clark was superb in her milestone match, while Jemma Osborne, Caitlin Stephens, Britt Mashado and Caitlin Egan have had fantastic seasons for the Magpies.

Berwick will finish in last place on the ladder but can take away some real positives.

Netball Preview Emma Clarke hasn’t put a foot wrong, while Taylah Butterworth, Morgan Thomas and Kassidy Withers can hang up their dresses today and know they have given their all.

But it’s the Magpies to win by 10-goals plus.

And one of the proudest clubs in SEFNL over the years will sign off today when Pakenham makes the trip to Robinson Oval to take on Doveton.

The Lions have been a terrific team over the years, winning the premiership in 2013 after building a classic rivalry against Beaconsfield. The Lions fell to the Eagles in three-consecutive grand finals from 2008 to 2010 before finally getting a hold of the silverware.

Jenna Douglas, Kyra Esler and Bec Langford have carried the tradition forward for the Lions this year, and will trouble the Doves today.

But the Doves have bigger fish to fry, with Hayley Stewart and Liz Edwards to take winning form into next week’s elimination final after a seven-goal victory.

Beaconsfield showed great form against Tooradin last week and will start heavy favourites against Cranbourne today.

With a hint of sadness, we played our last home game for Round 15 and our last game today Round 16 under the SEFNL banner. It has been a great journey and chapter of our club’s history, and now we move to the exciting future with AFL Outer East.

But what an incredible day we had for Round 15, we were so very thrilled to host the Terri Fellows at Barry Plant Real Estate Pakenham A Grade Premiership Luncheon for players & coaches from 1960 to 2013. Players & Coaches travelled from interstate, regional & local areas to attend the luncheon. Our heartfelt appreciation to Terri for your sponsorship of this luncheon, greatly appreciated & valued!

Jen Burridge, Life Member, Past A Grade Premiership Player, past A Grade coach, current committee member was the MC for the event. The club is so very grateful for all her efforts as the coordinator of this important day in our club’s history as we acknowledge these incredible players & coaches who have achieved what we all dream of - winning a Premiership!!

The memories & stories, the passion that these coaches & players have about this mighty club still burns so very bright! Tooradin-Dalmore

Wow, can you believe we’re come to the last round of the home and away season and what a great season it has been for the TDNC. Regardless of the results this week, all four of our senior sides have secured a top three position in their respective grades and we couldn’t be prouder of all the players and coaches for the stellar seasons they’ve had so far.

We now can’t wait to watch them all go out over the coming weeks and give it their all in the finals, and hopefully get some success along the way!

But first we’ve got a great weekend of netball coming up as we welcome ROC to our courts for what is sure to be a competitive day of netball to finish off the season.

All teams are looking to finish the season on a good note, after some mixed results last week against Beaconsfield.

B-Grade and D-Grade both had four goals wins in some tough games against Beacy, while C-Grade narrowly went down by two goals in a tight clash and A-Grade had their first loss for the season with Beacy coming out strong in the first half and our girls unable to catch-up, despite a much more composed, improved effort in the second half.

Unfortunately, our junior girls we’re unable to get any wins on the weekend against some tough Beaconsfield competition.

This weekend will be the last for all our junior sides, and we just wanted to say how proud the club is of our young Gulls this year.

We face some seriously strong competition in SEFNL, and while our young sides didn’t get too many wins this year, they gave it their all week in, week out. It’s been a pleasure watching you all develop as players and teams under the guidance of some great coaches and the future sure is looking bright for TDNC with some great talent coming through the ranks.

We’ve got a few milestone games to mention this week, including 17s Red player and captain Abbie Potter who will player her 50th game for the club. Abbie is a great leader on the court and a dynamic player through the mid-court.

We also had Bridget Cook play her 100th game recently, and Lisa Williams clocked her 50th game on the weekend.

Congratulations to these players on these milestones and thanks for your dedication to the club, both on and off the court.

With the season coming to an end, there’s a few important dates for everyone to note: • LAST ROUND FUNCTION: Come along to the Tooradin Sports Club after the game this week for dinner, drinks and live music by Geronimo from 6.30pm.

• JUNIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT: This will be held on Friday 31 August from 6.00pm at the Tooradin Sports Club, with presentations to start from 6.30pm. A meal and drink will be provided for all junior players. More details to come on the junior netball Facebook page.

• SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT: This will also be held at the Tooradin Sports Club on Friday 21 September. Tickets will be on sale soon via the TDFNC Facebook page.

Netball Notes Narre Warren The final home game of the season was played today and once again we had some milestones to celebrate.

Congratulations to Amy Heinze and Caity Stephens on playing 100-games and Erin Clark for playing 200 games at NWFNC! We are so proud of all players who reached significant milestones this season. It is a great testament to them as individuals but also shows what an integral part NWFNC plays in the lives of these athletes. C Grade: NW 43 def ROC 28 When I asked this team how they would measure success at the end of the season the response was, bonding as a team on and off the court and playing well. It is safe to say the team has been successful. This new group of girls came together at the beginning of the season, they have respected each other’s talents, trusted and encouraged each other and in doing so have played well. It is not perfect netball but it’s team netball. Well done girls on another game well played today and a successful season!

Despite several stoppages for lightening, the girls managed to re-group, focus and apply enough pressure to come away with a win. Great game from Erin Clark today as she celebrated an impressive 200 games with NWFNC. Also, a strong performance from 100 game player Caity Stephens.

A GRADE - With the top two places already decided, this week was an opportunity for the girls to test their finals preparation, and they certainly showed they’re on track. A big first half of incredible netball gave us a 13 goal lead, which we defended in the second half to walk away with the 11 goal win. Awards seem irrelevant this week as every player was outstanding in their individual and team roles, all three goalers working expertly, Bianca smart and dynamic in her role. Defenders Danni and Abbie were perfection again, while this was by the best game we have seen from the mid court, Rylee finding space and being a steady hand all game. With the game giving us some clear areas to work on in the next few weeks, it was a great and really well earned result - with one super proud coach and team manager at the end of the match.

Awards - Rylee, Bianca, Kaela B GRADE - Another tough week with Beacy falling short against Tooradin. Defensive efforts from Gabby, Caity and Tenielle kept the girls in touch, but we couldn’t convert on all opportunities. The attack end had to fend off some very close and physical defence. The team running out of time to close the gap, falling 4 goals short.

C GRADE - What an exciting game, which came down to the last 5 minutes. It was one of those hard fought out battles that saw a couple of crucial turnovers go our way.

Have to say a massive thank you to the awesome support the girls received from all of the footballers, really proud of the girls effort.

D GRADE - This week we came up against Tooradin. It was close for majority of the game with the lead changing hands a few times. We just couldn’t maintain our composure going into attack in the last quarter. Tooradin’s defence was tight and caused us to make rushed decisions. It was a greatly contested game with Tooradin coming through with the win. With one more round to go until finals we need to work on maintaining our structures.

U17 RED - After a tightly contested first half, Beacy used the major break to regroup and focus for the last two quarters.

The second half saw the girls create many turnovers which they capitalised on with great shooting. Beacy would like to wish Layla Williams a speedy recovery after a nasty fall during the game.

Awards: Charlotte & Emily U15 RED - Last week we encountered terrible winds and this week a very wet court. The team played well considering the conditions, ensuring shorter passes and control of the ball. Tiahn and Jemima in particular played a great game. Both girls in defence easily read court play

to take numerous intercepts and consistently maintained pressure. We have a lot to train and play for in the final round of the season-good luck girls.

Awards: Jemima Sheedy, Tiahn Willis & Ariah Eagle U15 WHITE - The girls played Tooradin today and came away with a great win, 50-5. It was very pleasing to see the structures we put into place at training paying dividends on the court. Super team game girls U13 RED - Beacy took on Tooradin in very wet conditions.

We started ok but we were very messy in getting the ball down the court. Goaling accuracy was good, as was our defensive pressure creating many turnovers resulting in goals. We played a great positive game and came away with a great win.

Awards: Charlotte, Ella & Paige U13 WHITE - The girls played a steady game in what were terrible conditions this weekend. They implemented our work from training and everyone played their roles beautifully. Each week the girls improve as a team and I am excited to see what the finals series will bring.

Netball Notes Doveton

Doveton V Berwick - A home game…..

Our baby doves (U13 Red) absolutely drenched, not forgetting the umpires.

Then almost perfect netball conditions – no rain!

Our C grade and A grade then copped it – lots of rain!

Both Doveton and Berwick A grade teams hoping for lightening to get themselves of court (torrential rain) – our court supervisor diligently keeping any eye on the weather conditions.

U13 White - Another tough game on the scoreboard for these little troopers, luckily, we were indoor so didn’t cop the torrential rain.

Hope was again pulling in intercepts in the mid court.

Maddi showed some great sportsmanship when her opponent went down.

Myla was instrumental in her role as captain and showed great leadership.

Emma’s passing was again spot on.

Summer presented in mid court and was great back up around the goal.

A.J. showed her usual defensive skills and a real red-hot go!

Lotoya showed her strength with her bullet passes and was moving around the goal circle.

It’s been an absolute pleasure to be involved with these girls and families over the season!

U15 Red - First half the girls played a very strong defensive game - the ball was coming down the court smoothly with every player attacking the ball and making great space. Second half was a whole different team, they seemed to come out thinking the game was over, which let Berwick in…

Positive of this game was the first half, if the girls played 4 quarters it would have been a totally different outcome.

U15 White - We had a great first quarter and were right in the game, our second quarter we dropped our heads and let Berwick take a lead that we just couldn’t match.

Some girls in this team have a lot more potential than they give themselves credit for, a bit more positive thinking and who know what their season could have been….

We must switch back on quickly and play to our game plan, even if the decisions are not going our way.

One more game against Pakenham – I am sure we can finish the season with and win!

U17 Red - Well, Well, Well…

Again, we got away with playing half a game!

The third quarter we have voice, energy, enthusiasm and encouragement.

Imagine if we do it for a whole game!!!!

U17 White - This week the old 17 white team were back on court.

With ten players this means a lot of changes each quarter, but this team adjust to whatever combinations I put on court.

We played a very strong game with everyone driving to the ball at times.

The girls were talking on court and were back each other up. Well done everyone!

Berwick

Tough day out for A grade, Doveton bringing their A game in area defence and great accuracy. Unfortunately on the day even though our turnovers were their our inaccuracy to convert hurt us. Great game winning shared best on court by Charlotte Tiplady in C and Finlay Mcmillan In GD.

B grade started well getting some great defensive turnovers. Unfortunately again we went missing converting much needed goals. Great performance on the day winning best on court by Saahara Ussman.

C Grade had a full 10 player squad. Our last meeting against Doveton resulted in us going down by 16 so we knew they were going to be hard to beat. We achieved our 1st mission for the game to win the first quarter.

Unfortunately a lapse in concentration and some horrible rain saw us lose the lead in the 2nd. The girls did well to persevere and slowly claw back and to their credit kept the consistency, going down only by 5 goals in the end. They have all shown major improvements since the beginning of the season and we are looking forward to a tough last game against Narre next week.

It was great to have a full side of 10 players again. The team was excellent defensively creating many turnovers down then court and goal ring. We had many opportunities however threw a few too many away once on the ring.

Always improving every week, we are aiming for a strong last game for the end of the season.

17R, came out of the blocks in the 1st qtr 12-5 against Doveton. Doves settled their game and fought back with a winning 3rd qtr that we couldn’t answer. The team going down by 4 goals at the end. Best on court performance by Kayla Loulanting for her great possession play.

17W, didnt have the best start, but the girls picked it up and brought out some of their best passages of netball against a second placed doves. Unfortunately some key moments where not capitalized on and the game slipped away. We are looking forward to enjoying our last game together next week.

15 W, started off slow with many mistakes and no movement on the inside courts ended with an outstanding win with all players driving forward and defending all the way down the court. Can’t wait to see them bring their A game for the finals. Well done.

15R, last time meeting Doveton it proved to be challenging, so we knew it would be another tough day on the court. The girls started off a little slowly but pressed down on the accelerator in the second half. We came back fighting with an 11-3 third quarter to set us up in the last.

All the girls played with guts and determination, a great display of teamwork coming into finals and another close game against Narre next week.

13W, had a really strong game all over the court. Great moving in the circle by the shooters and awesome goaling.

The midcourt moved the ball really well down the court in attack and kept their eyes up and picked off heaps of intercepts in defence. The defensive pressure coming from down the court asked the defenders to grab intercepts and cause held balls! Awesome team win yesterday!

13R, A massive win against the Doves this week with our first position well and truly cemented for finals by 2 games clear. In terrible conditions they all stuck to our game plan and set out to obtain their goals for each player. Super proud and can’t wait to watch these players in finals for 2018.

With some tough games for our juniors coming up against Narre at home this week, which can determine so places on the SEFNL ladders alter. Get down and support the players early who are hoping to bring home flags this year to the WICKERS.

SEWF Report Tigers are in for a Devil of a time

After an incredible second season of South Eastern Women’s Football, it’s now time for the action to step up another level as we head into week one of the finals.

In division one Eastern Devils defeated Seaford quite convincingly last week to claim top spot on the ladder, and now have a psychological advantage over the Tigers as they head into Sunday’s Second Semi-Final at Beaconsfield.

The Devils will strongly believe that they are now positioned perfectly to make a play for back-to-back flags.

Emily Mcilvena has been the Devils’ main target up forward this season, whilst Chloe Hunt, Georgia Punton and Shelley Beggs have all been scoring plenty of goals.

These four players all finished in the top five on the goal kicking list and this highlights the Devils’ scoring prowess.

The Tigers go to options up forward this season have been Kaitlyn Carew and Alison Dowler, they will be relied upon heavily to kick the Tigers a winning score.

But we’ll go for the Devils to progress through to the grand final after a 28-point victory.

Cranbourne take on Mornington in the First Semi-Final.

The Bulldogs have had an outstanding first season in division one and have done extremely well to make finals.

The Eagles on the other hand will be out to improve on last year’s finals performance, where they bombed out in the first final.

We are set for an incredibly even contest, and a perfect platform has been formed for a hero to step up from either side.

Emily Rylance and Vicki Sanford have been incredibly consistent this season for the Bulldogs and will no doubt be out to put on a show in the finals.

Both sides have an even spread of goal kickers with no real standouts, just who will step up when it matters?

Cranbourne will step up and head to a preliminary final after an eight-point victory.

In Division two Bass Coast collide with Seaford in the Second Semi-Final.

Bass Coast finished the season undefeated and are in top shape after defeating the second placed Tigers by 75 points just last week.

Tayla Stahl-Smith has had an incredible season for Bass Coast, finishing with 60 goals and has been in unstoppable form all year.

The most frightening prospect about Bass Coast is they have five other players who finished in the top 10 in the league goal kicking.

The Tigers have Lauren Field as their key-target up forward; she kicked 19 goals for the season, but know that they need others to lend a helping hand up forward if they are to be victorious this week.

But Bass Coast look unstoppable – they’ll win by 51 points.

The Eastern Devils and Tyabb will do battle in the First Semi-Final.

Both these sides are evenly matched and will both fancy their chances of claiming the victory.

The Devils will rate themselves as a chance to get in to the Grand Final if they are to beat the Yabbies, as they have beaten the Tigers and pushed Bass Coast during the season.

The Devils will look to Shae Dale and Aleesha Brindley as their main goal scorers, whilst the Yabbies will be looking for Kelly Adamson and Kylie Vigliarolo to shoulder the load up forward.

It’s the Devils by 13 points.

In division three Hastings clash with the Frankston Bombers in the Second Semi-Final.

The Bombers pushed up to second position on the ladder in the last round, after defeating Red Hill.

The Bombers will be hoping that their star forward Lindsay Tucker can continue her terrific form, as she kicked 42 goals in the regular season.

The Blues have an incredibly even spread of goal kickers which has brought them great success thus far. Hastings all-round strength will see them book their place on grand final day…by 11 points.

And Mornington and Pearcedale are set to lock horns for the second straight week, this time being in the First SemiFinal.

The Panthers had to upset the then second-placed Bulldogs to secure a finals position, and they did that in superb fashion, keeping them goalless and sending a strong message to their rivals.

Hayley Roberts has been a star for the Panthers this season and she will be hoping to step up and perform well on the big stage.

The Bulldogs will be hoping that their even spread of performers can grab hold of this game and take the wonderful opportunity that sits in front of them.

Success doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes a whole season’s worth of blood, sweat and tears to achieve it.

Pearcedale will keep its dream alive in a four-point thriller.
