Freda Hammonds

Chairperson - ACT-SO

Today’s events provide a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and witness the culmination of achievement from our youth in the areas of STEM, Performing Arts, Humanities, Music, and Business. My name is Freda Hammonds, and I am the ACT-SO Chair.

It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you to the 42nd NAACP Afro-Academics, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Awards ceremony.

For over 100 years, the NAACP has been a tremendous advocate and source of support for the youth in our community. From the inception of the Youth Council to the creation of ACT-SO formerly known as the Olympics of the Mind, the NAACP has educated, challenged and cultivated the next generation of leaders. ACT-SO is the place where

students can explore academic and creative passions, unapologetic and free from judgment. Our Olympians take risks in a creative, nurturing space to create art, stories, designs, dance, music, and more. Today we will honor those efforts!

ACT-SO is the link between dreams and reality for every student who participates. It is my hope that our ACT-SO Olympians pulsate throughout their communities leaving a lasting effect on all they encounter. On behalf of the DeKalb County NAACP, ACT-SO Committee, I am pleased to recognize these young, talented and gifted students who have worked tirelessly to perfect their skills in their respective areas of competition. We salute the parents, coaches, and mentors who have worked alongside you and contribute to your success.

Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable celebration and continued success.

As we present the honorees, we respectfully ask that parents, teachers, and all other concerned citizens consider supporting our ACT-SO program with your financial donations.

Freda Hammonds serves on the Executive Committee and chairs the ACT-SO program She is currently working on her Doctorate degree at Capella University. Freda is a registered mediator and entrepreneur.

Awards

As president of the NAACP DeKalb Branch #5192, I am honored to welcome you to this year’s ACT-SO Awards Ceremony.

This branch is in its 20th year of recognizing the talented and aspiring students in the DeKalb County area, and we continue this year with a wide-array of talent. 2020 was the first year that these Olympians competed across the virtual platform. Our students have not let the virus stop them from performing at the highest levels and for that I am proud.

Last year, Salmoncain Smith-Shomade finished with a medal at the national level in architecture. We look forward to more of our talented students doing the same this year.

To each of the Olympians I wish you well. I know

that the ACT-SO chair, Freda Hammonds, and her team have organized mentors to help you grow and that makes me confident that you will present well at the national level.

I want to thank all of the parents, family members, teachers, mentors, and cheerleaders that have encouraged our children to compete in this highly competitive “Olympics of the mind”. Today we honor these creative and talented Olympians that have excelled at the local level and support them through the end of the national event.

A heartfelt congratulations to all of our students that are truly Olympians of NAACP DeKalb County.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Teresa Hardy President NAACP DeKalb

May 15, 2021

Good Evening,

It is with great honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 42nd Afro - Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics – ACT-SO Award Ceremony. I am Dr. Patricia De’Shazior Hill the current State Chair for NAACP Georgia. I have been a part of ACT-SO since 2013.

As the ACT-SO Chairperson for Georgia NAACP, I am grateful for the opportunity to Chair this incredible program as we mentor and impact our next generation of leaders. Please, help me to applaud all our youth that have prepared for this moment. Let us salute the Dekalb County ACT-SO Youth who have competed for the Nationals scholarship and community members who made a difference in the lives of these students.

Vernon Jarrett, the founder of the NAACP ACT-SO program, said that if we could create communities where it is believed that young Blacks can achieve, and we see them achieving, then lionize them, and praise them when they do achieve, then we have got something that cannot be “taken away with the worst of Jim Crow and the worst of legislation.” The NAACP continues this legacy that Vernon Jarret started 42 years ago. We continue to inspire thousands of young people to know that “if we want to be a great nation, a great race, and a great people we must ActSo.”

Congratulations again on your hard work and good luck at the national competition.

Respectfully.

Co-Chairperson - ACT-SO

Congratulations!!!

Can I still say #proud?!!

What a pleasure it’s been to work with all of you this ACT-SO season. Through hard work and perseverance, you all have offered up fantastic performances, beautiful art, and creative pieces. During this unprecedented tragic and unsettling moment, cultivating and sharing your gifts and talents brings not only a certain normality but also hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Several of your mentors and I participated in ACT-SO during our high school years—at different times and in different cities but with the same spirit. That spirit of excellence, camaraderie and tenacity pervades the competition and continues to this day. It is my hope that this process benefited you intellectually, culturally and spiritually. For our underclass women and men, we hope to see you again next season!

Today, we applaud each of you for your accomplishments, highlight where you placed in the competition, and celebrate our gold medalists!!

Once again, congratulations everyone!!

Lift Every Voice and Sing

Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring ring with the har monies of Liberty; let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us, sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, felt in the day that hope unborn had died; yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet,

come to the place on witch our fathers sighed? we have come over a way that with tears has been watered, we have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last where the white gleam of our star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who has brought us thus far on the way; thou who has by thy might, led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, least our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee, shadowed beneath the hand, may we forever stand, true to our God, True to our native land.
