In a quiet corner of St Louis, something beautiful is taking shape, a small but powerful movement to keep Afghan culture alive through the art of jewelry. Zyvara & Co., founded by Sodaba Barnayar, is more than a brand; it’s a bridge between heritage and modern expression.
The idea was born from a simple question: “Why should our culture only live in our memories or special occasions?” Sodaba envisioned jewelry that could carry the essence of Afghanistan, its patterns, its craftsmanship, its resilience, into everyday life.
Every piece from Zyvara & Co tells a story
Crafted by Afghan artisans and inspired by traditional motifs, the designs blend history with contemporary elegance. The goal isn’t just to sell jewelry, but to share stories, of women, of artisans, of identity and pride.
The brand’s mission goes beyond aesthetics. Zyvara & Co. is deeply committed to empowering Afghan craftsmen and women, providing fair employment opportunities and giving a global platform to their artistry. Each collection contributes to preserving skills that have been passed down for generations, now given new life in the modern world.
Winning the Afghan Entrepreneurship Grant was a turning point It wasn’t just financial support, it was recognition that culture and business can thrive together With the grant, Zyvara & Co. plans to expand its reach through new collections, community collaborations, and an online presence that connects Afghan heritage with customers across the U.S.
For Sodaba, Zyvara & Co. isn’t just about jewelry, it’s about identity. “We want every person who wears our pieces to feel part of a story, one that honors where we come from and celebrates where we’re going.”
Zyvara & Co. stands as a symbol of creativity, resilience, and cultural pride, proof that even from far away, heritage can still shine

Huma’sJourney:Turning Passion into a Thriving Business
Huma’s journey began in a single-parent household, where she discovered her passion for cooking at a young age. Growing up in Afghanistan, she spent countless hours in the kitchen, mastering the flavors of traditional Afghan dishes. Cooking was not just a hobby; it was a way to connect with her culture and express creativity. When she moved to St. Louis, Huma realized she had the opportunity to share the authentic taste of her homeland with a broader audience. What started as a personal love for cooking soon grew into a vision for a business that could unite people through food.
At first, Huma thought running a restaurant would be simple, but she quickly learned that entrepreneurship is far more than preparing meals. Owning a business requires patience, resilience, and careful planning. She noticed that many Afghan women in St. Louis have exceptional skills but hesitate to start their own ventures due to fear of financial risks or unfamiliarity with business processes. Huma encourages women to begin with manageable ideas, like sewing, catering, or small-scale food services, which require lower startup costs and can gradually grow into thriving businesses.
Huma’s philosophy emphasizes self-reliance, creativity, and meeting customer needs. She balances advice from family and friends with her own instincts, understanding that success comes from perseverance, adaptability, and hard work. Daily, her restaurant serves 50 to 70 walk-in customers, while her catering services now accommodate over 200 guests for weddings, university events, and community gatherings. Each order challenges her team to excel under pressure, teaching lessons in time management, teamwork, and service excellence. What began as a dream of sharing home-cooked meals has become a flourishing business, showcasing the potential of Afghan entrepreneurship in St. Louis.
Programs like the Afghan Entrepreneurship Grant create vital opportunities for Afghan entrepreneurs, particularly women, to transform their ideas into sustainable businesses. Through grants, mentorship, and support networks, women can gain confidence, access funding, and contribute to both the local economy and their cultural community Huma’s journey demonstrates how determination, skill, and courage can turn a passion into a successful enterprise while inspiring others to step forward. Her story is a powerful reminder: with vision, patience, and resilience, Afghan women in St. Louis can embrace entrepreneurship, celebrate their heritage, and make lasting contributions to the community. Huma’s success shows that every dream no matter how simple it begins has the potential to grow into a business that empowers, connects, and inspires.
Javed Amirkhail: A Voice of Unity and Hope Through Music
Javed Amirkhail is a talented Afghan singer and songwriter who has dedicated his life to bringing people together through music and poetry. His goal has always been to use his songs as a bridge of understanding and compassion — to inspire unity among Afghans and remind them of their shared culture, responsibilities, and love for their homeland Through his melodies and lyrics, Javed delivers messages of peace, kindness, and hope for a better future.
His passion for music began in childhood. When Javed attended family weddings, he was deeply moved by the instruments and rhythms he heard. That early fascination grew into a lifelong devotion to music. However, his journey was not easy. Coming from a traditional family, Javed faced opposition especially from his father and grandmother, who feared the challenges of a musical career in Afghan society. But despite those obstacles, his love for music remained strong. He believed that music could heal divisions and express emotions words alone could not
Married at the young age of 19, Javed balanced his personal responsibilities with his musical ambitions. Although he has an interest in politics, he finds his true calling in music a universal language that transcends boundaries. His favorite genres include ghazals and calm, soulful tunes that reflect both his inner peace and deep connection to Afghan culture.

Building BridgesofOpportunity:TheSt. Louis Mosaic Project and the han Community
The St. Louis Mosaic Project stands as a powerful example of how a city can welcome newcomers and help them thrive. As an initiative under the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership and the World Trade Center St. Louis, the Mosaic Project works to make the region one of the most immigrant-friendly areas in the United States. Its mission is simple but vital to create a community where immigrants are valued, supported, and given opportunities to succeed while helping the city grow economically and socially.
The project envisions St. Louis as a vibrant “mosaic” a blend of cultures, traditions, and talents that together form a stronger whole To achieve this, Mosaic focuses on expanding immigrant entrepreneurship, connecting newcomers to the workforce, and building bridges of understanding between residents and immigrants.
One of Mosaic’s most meaningful contributions is its support for immigrant entrepreneurship. Many newcomers arrive with valuable skills, strong work ethics, and creative ideas but face barriers in starting a business. Mosaic helps them overcome those challenges by offering guidance, networking, and connections to local partners and mentors. This support can be especially valuable for Afghan entrepreneurs, many of whom bring rich cultural traditions such as cooking, sewing, arts, and small business management, technology and construction companies
Another vital initiative is the Professional Connectors Program, which links immigrants with local professionals who volunteer their time to help newcomers learn about the St. Louis job market, improve their resumes, and build personal networks For Afghan professionals seeking to restart their careers in the U.S., this mentorship can open doors thatmightotherwiseremainclosed.
The project also focuses on youth and education. Mosaic’s programs help international students and children from immigrant families adjust to their new environment, succeed in school, and develop leadership skills. These opportunities ensure that young Afghan students grow up feeling confident, included, and ready to contribute totheirnewhome.
Mosaic’s impact extends beyond individual success it strengthens the community as a whole Throughstorytelling, publicevents, and social connections, Mosaic celebrates diversity and encourages understanding between cultures. This helps Afghan families inSt.Louisfeelseen, respected, andpartofa largerwelcomingnetwork.
For Afghan families rebuilding their lives, the St. Louis Mosaic Project offers more than resources it offers hope. It represents a community that values every person’s story and believes that when newcomers succeed, theentirecitymovesforwardtogether.

On August 15, 2021, Rafiullah Safi left Afghanistan with his two children, searching for safety and a brighter future. It was one of the most difficult days of his life leaving behind his home, his family, and everything familiar. Yet deep inside, he carried hope hope for peace, stability, and the chance to start again.
Rafiullah’s journey first brought him to California, where he began a completely new chapter filled with challenges and learning. Everything was different the language, culture, and daily life He had to start from zero, rebuilding a future for his family from the ground up. During those four years in California, his family grew. He and his wife were blessed with two more children, making their family of six stronger and more determined than ever. But as time went on, living in California became more difficult. The cost of living was extremely high, and job opportunities were limited. Despite working hard, it was tough to save and almost impossible to move forward. Rafiullah wanted more than survival he wanted progress, opportunity, and stability for his children.
After much thought and research, he began exploring new places to live places where families could thrive That’s when he discovered Missouri
A New Beginning in Missouri: Building Hope and Opportunity
When Rafiullah learned about the Afghan Support Program run by the International Institute of St. Louis and its relocation initiative that helps families move from other states to Missouri, his hope grew even stronger. The program helps new arrivals with three months of rent and even provides up to $20,000 in funding for those who want to start their own business. This incredible opportunity gave him the confidence to take the next big step toward independence Today, the Afghan community in St Louis has built a strong foundation with small businesses, community and faith centers, the Afghan Chamber of Commerce, and programs like youth soccer and sewing classes through the Afghan Support Program. Seeing this thriving network of support inspires Rafiullah to contribute and grow alongside them.
Now, as he prepares for this new chapter in St. Louis, Rafiullah Safi is filled with optimism. His dream is to build a better life for his family, start a small business, and show his children that with hard work, courage, and faith, anything is possible.
The more he learned about it, the more he believed it was a place to truly start fresh. Missouri offered affordability, safety, and most importantly, a growing Afghan community that reminded him of home
Baghlan Province, located in northeastern Afghanistan, is one of the country’s most historically and economically significant regions Covering an area of about 21,112 square kilometers (8,151 square miles), Baghlan is home to over one million people. The province’s landscape is diverse, featuring the northern slopes of the majestic Hindu Kush mountain range. Important mountain passes such as Robatak, Barabi, Khawak, and Salang connect Baghlan to other regions, making it a vital link for trade and travel.
The capital city of Baghlan is Puli Khumri, a growing industrial hub and the center of local governance. The province consists of 15 districts, including Baghlan-e-Jadid, Burka, Nahrain, Andarab, Khinjan, Dushi, Duhan-eGhori, Khost o Freng, Freng Gharo, Guzargah-eNoor, Deh Salah, Pul-e-Hesar, Jalka, Tala-Barfak, and Puli Khumri Baghlan is also home to a richly diverse population, including Tajiks, Pashtuns, Uzbeks, Hazaras, and Tartars, who together create a vibrant cultural mosaic.
Agriculture and animal husbandry are the main sources of livelihood for the people of Baghlan. Farmers grow wheat, rice, cotton, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables, while livestock such as cows, sheep, and poultry provide dairy products, wool, and meat. These activities play an important role in the province’s economy and food security. In addition to farming, Baghlan residents engage in factory work, small businesses, and manual labor, particularly in Puli Khumri District.
Baghlan also holds an important place in Afghanistan’s industrial development The Baghlan Sugar Factory, established in 1938, employs around 1,000 workers and produces up to 50,000 kilograms of sugar daily.

Puli Khumri is also home to two large cement factories, Ghori I and Ghori II, which began operations in 1962 and 1986, respectively These factories continue to provide jobs and contribute significantly to the national economy. Additionally, the Karkar coal mine, discovered in 1938 and located 12 km from Puli Khumri, is a major source of coal for the region, contributing to industrial growth.
Education and electricity access remain growing priorities in the province. There are over 330 schools, including primary, secondary, and madrasas, along with two higher education centers Baghlan University and a Teacher Training Center. Though access to electricity is limited overall, urban areas like Puli Khumri benefit from higher availability, with about 65% of households connected to the power grid because of power station Baghlan’s cultural heritage is also remarkable The ancient site of Surkh Kotal, located about 18 kilometers north of Puli Khumri, stands as one of Afghanistan’s most important archaeological treasures. Dating back to the Kushan Empire, it contains monumental temples, inscriptions, and statues that reveal much about early Central Asian civilization. Despite challenges during periods of conflict, efforts by Afghanistan and international experts have helped preserve many of these historical artifacts.
Today, Baghlan stands as a province of resilience — rich in culture, resources, and history. Its people continue to build a future that honors their heritage while contributing to Afghanistan’s development.
My Journey in the United States of America My Journey in theUnited States of America
My name is Nuhzatullah Mangal, and I came to the United States in 2021 after leaving Afghanistan. Moving here was a life-changing experience for me. I had to leave behind everything that was familiar and start a new life in a completely different country. It was not easy at first, but I was filled with hope and determination to build a brighter future for myself
My life in the United States began with many challenges, but also with opportunities. I had to adjust to a new culture, a new language, and a new way of life. At first, everything felt unfamiliar, but I was determined to work hard and make the most of the opportunities given to me.
I started school in the 9th grade at Bayless High School. At first, it was difficult to keep up with the language and schoolwork, but I never gave up. Over time, I made friends, improved my English, and became more confident in myself. Bayless High School became a place where I not only learned about math, science, and history, but also about resilience and perseverance
In 2025, I proudly graduated from Bayless High School. That moment was very special to me because it was proof that my hard work and determination had paid off. It was also a reminder of how far I had come since my first days in the United States.
Now, I am in college, continuing my journey toward my dream of becoming a pharmacist I chose this path because I want to help people and make a difference in my community. Becoming a pharmacist will allow me to use my skills and knowledge to improve the health and lives of others.
Looking back, I see how much I have grown and how many obstacles I have overcome. My journey as an immigrant has taught me strength, patience, and determination. I know there are still challenges ahead, but I am confident that I can achieve my goals. My story is still being written, and I am excited for the future that lies ahead.
