CLUB AFFORD’S FIRST VIP EXPERIENCE Last Saturday, some lucky Club Afford members got an exclusive up close and personal with animals who call Sydney Zoo home. Our clients became a zookeeper for a day!

The adventure started with meeting Sydney Zoo Education Officers Jess and Louis, who told them about the fun things they would be doing. Everyone got a special Sydney zookeeper lanyard, showcasing their VIP status for the day.

They were also the first people to receive our fantastic new Club Afford merchandise. The colourful logo has been splashed across bags, t-shirts, lanyards and drink bottles and everyone loved the new look.

They couldn’t wait to put the shirts on! Tomasi from Campbelltown Club Afford said he loved his new t-shirt and lanyard and couldn’t wait to wear them out again.

Our Afford zookeepers had a few very important jobs that day, one of them was to create an enrichment item for some of the animals in the zoo. Enrichment is providing sources of stimulation for different senses for the animals. It maintains their mental and physical health and is something the Sydney zookeepers do every day. Once the enrichment was made, in this case, it was made up of some tasty insects for the snakes, everyone got to see the keepers give it to the animals and watched them be devoured.

They also met ‘Spike’ the bearded dragon and learned about how her camouflage helps her to blend into the desert and protect her from predators. She was very friendly and almost everyone had a hold and had a photo taken with her.

The last stop of the day was to visit a place in the zoo that no one else gets to go – only the zookeepers. They went behind the scenes to see the hyenas and the kings of the jungle –the lions! Everyone had to be careful not to get too close to the fence when the lions came over and investigated all the Affordian faces they were seeing. Jess and Louis explained how the keepers look after them every day, including feeding them, cleaning their exhibits and keeping them happy.

Everyone from Green Valley Club Afford said they had lots of fun and they enjoyed seeing the lions up close the most.

Our zookeepers learned that there is lots of walking involved in being a keeper, especially with a zoo that is so big. Some tired feet were treated to a ride on the buggy, which gets keepers around the zoo with ease. A cruisey way to end their day!

Last stop for Raymond from Campbelltown Club Afford was a quick trip to the gift shop for some little souvenirs to remember such a wonderful day.

Staff Matters ADES GET ISO CERTIFIED

Recently our ADEs underwent a rigorous audit and testing process to get the ISO 5 tick quality accreditation. This is a massive milestone for Afford Employment and overall for our business, being it is Australia’s most recognised certification mark and provides global recognition. Our ADEs are the highest of quality and finally have the official 5 ticks to show this!

The sites have recently implemented new processes and flow maps across the factories, which saw a dramatic increase in performance from supported employees. The increase was significant enough for us to feel confident in our success when applying for the ISO Quality Assured certification. Only organisations that demonstrate the highest of standards have the honour of using this certification.

This has been made possible for our ADE team thanks to the hard work of Gordon Griff, Executive Manager, Commercial Services, who has spent countless hours working on perfecting this application.

“It’s a very big thing to be ISO certified, a massive achievement,” Gordon said. Our factories will benefit from this new process as well, as new starters can be given the flow maps and it will show them the process is a simple, easy to read format. The entire process has been linked back to PACES and we are very excited about what this will bring for our ADE staff.

“We still have some improvements to make,” Gordon added. “But we’ve created a program that our factories have never had before. It works in our restricted staffing levels and we have built this program from scratch.”

It’s incredible to see the change in our factories and if we look back, 18 months ago there were no systems in place like this. We had low morale and supported employees didn’t want to come to work. Fast forward to now and we have finished 300k better than the previous financial year. We have achieved so much in the last 12 months. Not only implementing these new systems but creating some fun and bringing some Afford culture into our factories Supported employees now enjoy a range of monthly activities and their birthdays and achievements are celebrated as they should be. The factories themselves have also been upgraded to regular cleaning from 2 days a week to 5, especially important during the current pandemic. Overall we have achieved increased productivity, created a better work environment and have an amazing team vibe!

Our ADEs were the first in the business to create COVID-19 safety videos and we are always looking for new ways to improve and engage our supported employees.

We are excited to announce our SLES services will soon be expanding to Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide! We have started taking expressions of interest for these new locations and are building a list of clients. Currently, our SLES services are available in multiple locations across Sydney and on the Gold Coast and we can’t wait to see our employment services grow in the other states.

T RA Afford’s SLES (School Leaver Employment Support) PA TIO N EM program provides school leavers with opportunities to enhance their skills and prepare for life in the workplace. Through Afford’s SLES program, trainers will support trainees to develop their employment and independence skills. This may be through additional training or TAFE courses. Trainers will also create real-life, practical opportunities for trainees to learn about the workforce.

Afford’s SLES program is all about challenging yourself and developing your skills for work life. We are excited to start supporting school leavers with their journey to long-term employment in Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.
