Helping vineyards manage their nitrogen (N) inputs, it removes growers’ concerns relating to weather conditions leaching away costly inputs.

The concept is to supply the majority of N to the crop before flowering and via a single application. Agromaster® (12-5-19+4MgO) is a partially coated (controlled release) fertiliser supplying 20 - 30kg of N to the crop.

from the root zone. The other 68% is uncoated promoting early development of leaves and lateral growth.

The N release from Agromaster is temperature dependant, if the soil is cold it slows down – mirroring the crop’s growth pattern. Conversely, as soil temperature rises so too does the N release meeting the crop’s additional needs.

Innovative new foliar products New for 2015 is a range of Agroleaf® Liquid products - Calcium+, a highly cost effective and superior foliar calcium (Ca) product and Total+, a balanced nutrient and plant biostimulant providing stress relief.

Highly effective natural chelating agents, amino acids are essential building blocks of all living matter and in plants play a key role in photosynthesis. Calcium+ is fortified with four amino acids glycine, glutamine acid, mono sodium glutamate and L-Arginine – which all enhance Ca uptake. Glycine and glutamic acid are fundamental metabolites in the formation of vegetable tissue and chlorophyll synthesis, while L-Arginine increases synthesis of flower and fruit related hormones.

High performance foliar calcium – Calcium+ An innovative liquid fertiliser, Agroleaf Liquid Calcium+ is fortified with three technologies to boost absorption and help avoid Ca deficiencies in fruit and vegetable crops.

Calcium+ contains a blend of Ca combined with amino acids, plant sugars and an industry leading surfactant - all helping to facilitate absorption through the leaf epidermis.

“Ca is an essential plant nutrient and deficiency can lead to conditions including blossom end rot, tipburn, bitter pit in apples as well as localized tissue necrosis resulting in stunted plant growth and even death of terminal buds and root tips,” warns Scott Garnett, ICL specialty agriculture manager for UK and Ireland.

“Ca deficiency can be caused by an insufficient supply in the growing media or soil, but is more frequently a result of low transpiration. This can be caused by high humidity, which slows transportation of Ca to the plant, poor uptake of the mineral through the stem or by excessive usage of potassium or nitrogen fertilisers,” explains Scott.

“Acidic, sandy, or coarse soils often contain less Ca. Soil can also contain insoluble forms of Ca, unusable by the plant, with high phosphorus containing soils particularly susceptible.“

ICL plans to add additional new products to the Agroleaf liquid range over the coming season.

The plant sugar, dextrose monohydrate, is an immediately available plant food source. The non-ionic surfactant − with excellent spreading and wetting properties − further improves the speed of Ca uptake and coverage on the leaf surface.

“Ensuring crops are not suffering from Ca deficiency at key growth stages has an impact not only on yield and quality, but on the shelf life of fresh produce,” says Scott.

Targeted stress relief – Total+ Also new to the range is Total+ - a balanced nutrient and plant biostimulant formulated to provide targeted stress relief, just when plants need it most.

“During periods of stress, caused by both environmental factors and pesticide application, Total+ provides plants with NPK along with chelated zinc and manganese and a seaweed extract biostimulant,” explains Scott.

“Total+ acts as a safener for pesticide application to help prevent negative effects on the plant during a period where it is already under stress from disease pressure.”

Containing a triple seven formulation 7% nitrogen, 7% phosphorous and 7% potassium - Total+ is formulated with a citric acid based delivery system to aid penetration of foliar applied products – such as other nutritional products.

“Highly versatile, Total+ can be applied as a foliar nutrient on its own, or with other foliar sprays including pesticides,”explains Scott. “Containing concentrated cold water extracted seaweed, it ensures high levels of plant biostimulation.”

Turf fit for Rugby World Cup Villa Park, at Witton in Birmingham, is home to Premier League football club Aston Villa and is one of thirteen venues selected to host Rugby World Cup matches this autumn.

The science “A plant’s resistance to adverse situations is significantly determined by its osmotic regulation capacity,” explains Andrew Gough of Lallemand Plant Care.

“When facing unfavourable conditions plants initiate defense mechanisms, such as maximising energy saving, reducing water loss and using reserves to maintain vital functions. Basically, the plant slows down closing its stomata and decreasing photosynthetic activity.”

At a cellular level, metabolites - small organic compounds – accumulate in the cytoplasm. These ‘compatible solutes’ are highly water soluble and neutral.

While not impacting on cellular function, they help maintain turgor pressure – avoiding detrimental cell alteration which is an intrinsic feature of all abiotic stresses. All compatible solutes act as 4

protective agents – osmoprotectants or osmolytes – with some stabilizing the structures and functions of certain macromolecules,” says Andrew.

“Accumulation of these compounds is fundamental to the acclimatization of cells to a constantly changing environment and the associated stresses.”

“Glycine Betaine (GB) is a key compatible solute and evidence strongly shows the important role it plays as an osmoprotectant,” says ICL’s Scott Garnett. “Plant species vary in their capacity to synthesize GB, with some accumulating relatively high levels in their chloroplasts while others do not synthesize it at all.

“GB is a very useful natural anti-stress agent which can adjust the osmotic balance (osmoregulate) inside the plant

cells and tissue thereby helping plants defend themselves and overcome stresses,” explains Andrew. “By reducing the negative effects, crop performance is enhanced, net photosynthesis increases as does yield and quality.“

IntraCell A patent protected, Lallemand Plant Care product, IntraCell contains pure naturally produced Glycine Betaine at a very high level - 97%. Launched in 2015, it is marketed exclusively in the UK and Ireland by ICL. “Once sprayed onto the crop canopy, IntraCell penetrates the leaf surface and is translocated systemically throughout the plant within 24 hours,” explains Scott. “Remaining unmetabolized, in the intracellular plant regions, it can perform its function for three to four weeks after application.”

Easy to apply as foliar spray IntraCell is recommended for use preventatively in anticipation of stress occurrences. It can be applied with foliar feeds or agrochemicals to improve their efficacy.

It is recommeded to use

an adjuvant for optimal penetration into plants.

Widely tested on a number of crops under commercial cultivation this natural product is safe for both the user and the environment. IntraCell has no harvest interval or harmful residues and can be used on all edible and non-edible crops.

IntraCell is supplied in wettable powder form in a 2kg bag and applied at a dosage of 2-4 kg/ha (for up to 500 litres of water use a minimum of 2kg/ha and for >500 L of water use 0.4% of IntraCell w/w).

It can be stored for 24 months in the original packaging at ambient temperatures.

Developed by Lallemand Plant Care, and marketed exclusively in the UK and Ireland by ICL, its multiple modes of action bring benefits relating to growth, yield, quality and disease suppression. A stable and very safe product, it is easy to use.

This greater root mass improves water and nutrient absorption as well as plant anchoring for stability and stress tolerance.

The science “Applied via water, the beneficial Cilus Plus bacteria disperse in the soil gravitating towards growing roots,” explains Andrew Gough, of Lallemand Plant Care.

“On contact they rapidly establish in the rhizosphere, the root zone, feeding on the carbon rich exudates that naturally leak from living roots. The beneficial bacteria population quickly grows taking control of any ideal environment.

The flourishing bacteria secrete organic compounds, as well as enzymes, that stimulate growth and solubilise nutrients - particularly phosphorus

(P) and metallic ions in the soil. They also secrete mucigel, a natural biofilm, which aids aggregate formation in soils considerably improving the structure.

“Having colonised the rhizosphere, these beneficial bacteria protect plants from pathogens by ‘spatial’ and ‘trophic’ competition, depriving pathogens of living space and nourishment, ” says Andrew.

What to expect “Crop benefits are typically wideranging and often visible above and below ground,” explains ICL’s Scott Garnett. “Growers are seeing noticeable increases in root development in treated crops. As the soil volume infiltrated increases, so to does the amount of nutrients the roots and beneficial bacteria gain access to.

“Cilus Plus improves plant nutrition by solubilising nutrients locked up in the soil or growing medium, particularly phosphorus and metallic ions. Applied fertilisers are also better assimilated.

“Treated plants establish quicker as young plants - or if dormant, begin regenerating more quickly. They continue to be more vigorous in later growth too. The root system is significantly strengthened and root health markedly improved, which all decreases stress sensitivity.

“We are observing increases in productivity, from growth through to harvested yield and improvements in quality. Another benefit is reduced incidence of serious soil-borne damping-off/root/base rot diseases.”

Easy to apply The Cilus Plus powder is dissolved in water and drenched onto seedling trays, sprayed onto soil, applied to growing media or applied through drip irrigation.

Trials demonstrating P solubilisation A recent trial by Lallemand in France looked at P solubilisation by Cilus Plus.

The growing media was a mix of soil, sand and insoluble calcium phosphate making the P unavailable. A pH of 8.02 further exacebated the problem. At the beginning of the trial the P analysis was 111.20 ppm in total with 34.70 ppm in an available form.

The treatment options (repeated five times each) included pots with, or without, lettuce plants with Cilus Plus used at a dose equivalent to 200 g/ha.

At the end of the trial the P availability and bacterial populations were analysed – see comments below for results and explanations.

With efficient water and fertiliser management moving up the farming agenda, our wetting and water conservation agent H2Flo速 is helping solve issues across a spectrum of soils types. The first in a series of innovative water management products ICL plans to bring to market in the specialty agriculture sector over the next few years.

Penetrating the soil, this unique blend of surfactants promotes vertical and lateral water movement, reducing overall irrigation requirements while helping improve yields.

In potato crops, when applied to ridges, our powerful surfactant can dramatically reduce water usage by up to 50%.

H2Flo works extremely well on a range of soils with water management issues from light sands, to hard compacted soils where adequate water penetration is the issue.

This surfactant also performs very well in high value fertigation fed crops such as strawberries. A Scottish customer,

Expanding independent trials programme This year ICL has once again invested heavily in independent research trials across the UK, from Scotland to the south of England, involving products and technologies from around the world.

Following a promising first year, our trials using E-Max technology 6

despairing of the light sandy soil on a recently purchased new site, took the decision to trial H2Flo last year. The soils responded immediately and he quickly switched to monthly applications of H2Flo across his whole crop.

The root activator combines plant biostimulants and surfactants. These work synergistically to increase the root mass and provide an optimum air / water balance in the root zone.

Similarly dramatic results were seen on another Scottish soft fruit farm, this time where dry compacted soils meant roots were struggling to develop due to lack of moisture.

A high strength product, H2Flo contains 88% surfactant compared to the industry norm of around 60%. Easy to use, it can be applied any time of year via drip, centre pivot, overhead, boom sprayer or knapsack sprayer.

H2Flo also contains a root hair activator promoting stronger roots and aiding plant establishment. Trials have shown up to an eight-fold increase in secondary roots and a ten-fold increase in root hairs, compared to an untreated control.

Soil Surfactant

and Agrocote速 to deliver controlled release nitrogen to seed potatoes are now in their second year. Findings so far suggest Agrocote may create improved nitrogen (N) release, enabling it to be used more efficiently in some varieties. The results potentially suggest using Agrocote could reduce the N requirement for seed potato production. Part of a three-year research project, trials are taking place in the Netherlands and Scotland - we plan to publish full findings in 2016/17.

Our speciality agriculture division has instigated a number of independent biostimulant trials in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire looking at the benefits to potato, cereal and OSR crops.

Carried out by a leading UK university, additional trials are also being carried

out in Europe. In Lincolnshire we are funding additional trials of Lallemand products on a range of crops - including brassicas and potatoes.

In UK soft and top fruit crops, ICL is funding research in the south-east on calcium applications.

In addition, agronomists from our specialty agriculture team have set up a number of demonstration trials with growers looking at the performance of soil-borne bacteria on crops. Also, applying controlled release N, using E-Max technology, to leafy salads in a bid to reduce nitrate levels in the leaves.

In regard to foliar products, trials are underway looking at applications of Agroleaf速 to a range of crops to improve crop quality and yields.

Earlier this year we exhibited at LAMMA, the UK’s largest farm machinery, equipment and agricultural services show, and at the first combined Brassica and Leafy Salads Conference in Peterborough. We will be returning to LAMMA in 2016 (January 20-21).

Fruit growers can find our team at Fruit Focus (July 22 - stand 354) at East Malling Research Centre, at the National Fruit Show (21-22 October) at the Kent Show Ground, and at the Teagasc National Soft Fruit Conference in Ireland (date to be confirmed).

Vegetable growers can find us at the Lincolnshire Brassica Open Days at Elsom Seeds (14-15 October) and at the Carrot and Onion Conference at Peterborough (November 4-5). Potato growers can come and talk to us at Potatoes in Practice at the James Hutton Institute (August 13), at BP2015 at the Harrogate International Centre (12-13 November) and at the Teagasc National Potato Conference in Ireland (details to be confirmed).

Tree producers and forestry management consultants will find the ICL Specialty Agriculture team at the Four Oaks Trade Show (8-9 September) and at the GLAS nurseries and sports turf show in Dublin (23 July) (see above).

Meanwhile, vegetable growers visiting LAMMA and the Brassica and Leafy Salads events in January took advantage of our ‘Try a hectare for free’ promotion.

This featured the new Lallemand products (pages 4 and 5 plus Rise™ S and Rise™ P) as well as our new fast acting foliar Agroleaf® range. Containing plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, Rise S and Rise P mine the soil making sulphur and phosphorus (respectively) more available.
