“Did you know that our partner – BYD – is the world’s #1 selling brand of electric and hybrid cars?”
Part of the Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility brand family, BYD is the biggest name that you probably might not have heard of. They are the world’s largest producers of electric and hybrid cars, and just last year alone, they sold an extraordinary number of over 3 million electric and hybrid cars worldwide.
There is a good reason why BYD is so popular. They are a powerhouse of technology development and hold nearly 26,000 globally approved patents. Secondly, BYD has developed a ground-breaking electric car battery called the Blade Battery, which is the strongest, safest and one of the most advanced batteries in the world.
More importantly, BYD vehicles outrun many other automotive brands in terms of their sleek, modern and premium design, state-of-the-art technological features and driving performance. Leading BYD’s design team is Wolfgang Egger, a renowned car designer who previously designed for Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini.
And the best part, BYD vehicles are priced extremely well, reflecting our promise to make electric mobility easily accessible and practical for everyone.
In the UAE, we have launched two cars, BYD ATTO 3 (an electric compact SUV) and BYD HAN (flagship sedan), with plans to soon launch three more models, BYD SEAL (luxury electric sedan), BYD QIN (plug-in hybrid sedan) and BYD SONG (plug-in hybrid SUV). Each of these cars is equipped with features that you would get in the top-spec model of any petrol brand, making them the smartest
and most value-driven choice for today’s car owners. To add to that, you don’t even need to take an electric car for service as frequently, as electric cars have far lesser moving parts, so they come with less ongoing maintenance costs.
Words can only do so much, there’s no better way to learn more about BYD than visiting our BYD Discovery Center located in Dubai Festival City. I would suggest you take a trip and experience the ultimate electric journey first-hand at the Center. See you there!

FROM PROFIT TO PURPOSE
How Al Futtaim Education Foundation is redefining success
As I reflect on the past two years, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the strides we’ve made at the Al Futtaim Education Foundation.
At the heart of our mission lies a profound belief in the power of education to shape futures and transcend boundaries. Of course this
mission has flourished and transformed lives due to the unwavering support the Foundation has received from the Al Futtaim family, and for that, I extend my sincerest appreciation.
Although a very successful business conglomerate, Al-Futtaim Group has continued to demonstrate that its mission is not only about profit margins, but the outreach support we are offering to communities and individuals particularly in this region.
Bold moves
While our schools, Deira International School (DIS) and Universal American School (UAS), stand as beacons of academic excellence, our vision extends far beyond the confines of traditional learning.
Not so long ago, as a Foundation, we undertook bold moves and introduced initiatives that are
already bearing fruit. Today, as we reflect on the outcomes of our collective efforts, I am humbled to witness all the changes that have taken place, visible in the stories of resilience, determination, and hope that emanate from our students.
One of our most cherished initiatives has been our scholarships programme, a motivating force for talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds across the region. It is here, amidst the trials and tribulations of conflicttorn lands in the region, that our commitment to making a difference finds its truest expression.
Flames of hope
We have seen some very successful stories thanks to this programme. And in the stories of these brave souls, we find echoes of triumph that inspire us all. Some of our students dream not only of personal success but have expressed the desire to return to their homelands, bearing the light of knowledge and opportunity for their countrymen. It is in these moments that we glimpse the true essence of our endeavours - not merely to educate, but to ignite flames of hope that illuminate the darkest of nights.

Building bridges
Similarly, our dedication to improving standards of Arabic instruction has fostered a deep appreciation for language and culture among our students, enriching their educational experience and broadening their horizons.
Through our language immersion programmes, cultural exchanges, and collaborative projects, they are not just learning a language but embracing a heritage, forging connections, and building bridges across cultures and continents.
As we celebrate the achievements of our Foundation, we are reminded that the true measure of success lies not in test scores or accolades but in the lives that we touch and the futures that we empower. Truly, Al Futtaim Education Foundation is shaping a generation of leaders who will transform the world for the better, one dream at a time.

DIS STUDENTS REACH FOR THE STARS
A stellar encounter with UAE’s ‘Sultan of Space’ leaves a lasting impression on our learners
“Space exploration goes beyond reaching the skies; it’s about shattering limits and recognising that ‘impossible’ is merely a term”
In a remarkable achievement, a group of enthusiastic students from Deira International School (DIS) has earned the privilege to represent the UAE and GCC at the prestigious NASA Human Rover Explorer Challenge in Huntsville, Alabama this April. These bright minds, the only high school team among global contenders, overcame stiff competition from universities and technology colleges to secure their spot in the final showdown.
Space exploration
At the heart of this triumph is their ingenious rover design, a collaborative effort by six sub-teams within the larger group
of around 25 students. Guided by project leader Harshit, the teams focused on key aspects like materials and structure, safety, documentation, propulsion and steering, and design. Their stellar achievement not only showcases their passion but also emphasises the potential that young minds can unleash in the field of space exploration.
The highlight of their journey so far was an inspirational encounter with their hero, celebrated UAE astronaut and engineer, His Excellency Dr Sultan Al Neyadi. The meeting took place during the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2024 event, where Sultan unveiled his book titled ‘Out of This World,’ sharing captivating moments from his space odyssey aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Sultan’s journey
Expressing their excitement, one student remarked, “Meeting Sultan Al Neyadi was like touching the stars. He’s not just an astronaut; he’s proof that dreams can come true, even for students like us.”
The DIS students were not just starstruck; they were deeply inspired by Sultan’s journey. Most of them aspire to follow in his footsteps, aspiring to become space engineers and astronauts. The passion for space exploration resonates strongly within the group.
Sultan Al Neyadi, fondly known as the ‘Sultan of Space,’ shared his journey with the audience during the literary event. He took them through his early days
in Al Ain, the support from his parents, and the pivotal moments that led him to become the first Arab astronaut on the ISS to undertake a 6-month mission, as part of Expedition 69 and also the first Arab Astronaut to perform a spacewalk.
Lasting impression
In a quote that resonated with the DIS students, Sultan shared, “Space exploration goes beyond reaching the skies; it’s about shattering limits and recognising that ‘impossible’ is merely a term”.
The UAE’s commitment to space exploration is evident in Sultan Al Neyadi’s story. Born in Umm Ghafa,
Al Ain, Sultan turned his childhood dreams of stargazing into a remarkable journey that includes earning a Ph.D. in Information Technology and making history by becoming the first person to wear a jiu-jitsu gi in space.
The encounter left a lasting impression on the DIS students, who see in Sultan Al Neyadi a role model and a living testament to the UAE’s commitment to pushing boundaries.
With the ‘Sultan of Space’ as their guide, these students are set to navigate their dreams and ambitions, aiming for heights that were once deemed unreachable.

Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi reveals a heartfelt liftoff moment with his mom
In the quiet moments before the colossal rocket roared to life, Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, standing on the precipice of a cosmic journey, faced a poignant decision – a choice that would tether his heart to Earth for just a moment longer. Sultan was asked to choose only one person to connect with before hurtling into the cosmos.
With a single minute to spare, Sultan’s eyes scanned the faces of his vast family, each
Prayers and well-wishes
As the call connected, a wave of emotion surged through the airwaves, transcending the physical distance between Earth and the vessel poised for liftoff. Sultan’s mother, a beacon of unwavering love, clutched the phone tightly, her heart echoing with prayers and well-wishes for her son’s safe journey into the unknown.
Sultan’s voice reassured his mother, promising that the vast expanse of space would cradle him gently. “Everything will be OK, Mama,” he whispered through the static, the warmth of his words traversing the cosmic void.
With the clock ticking, Sultan made a pledge that echoed louder than the countdown outside: “I’ll call you back in exactly 9 minutes, Mama.” (That is the time that most rockets take to get to orbit).

Quiet stillness of space
The rocket’s roar erupted, propelling Sultan into the heavens as his mother’s prayers echoed in his ears. The journey to the International Space Station commenced, but in those initial moments, Sultan Al Neyadi was not just an astronaut; he was a son, bridging the gap between the infinite and the familiar.
Nine minutes later, in the quiet stillness of space, Sultan fulfilled his promise. With the Earth suspended beneath him like a delicate jewel, he dialled his mother’s number again, and the ethereal connection spanned the cosmic abyss. Mother and son, separated by the vastness of space, found solace in a brief conversation that transcended the boundaries of the celestial dance.
“Mama, I’m here, and I’m safe,” Sultan’s voice echoed through the cosmos, carrying the essence of a promise kept. In that moment, the stars bore witness to a tale of love that defied gravity – a son’s promise to his ‘origin’, his Mama, echoing through the vastness of space and time.

A young trailblazer in space exploration
“Hey there, everyone! Harshit here, and guess what? I’m thrilled to share that my team got an invitation to the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge! Let me walk you through this incredible journey.
Firstly, when I heard about this opportunity, I never imagined we’d make it this far. We decided to take the plunge on a whim, just to challenge ourselves globally. And you won’t believe it – we made it to the top! The feeling is just indescribable.
Being the only team from the GCC in such a big-shot international event is beyond incredible. Considering the talent we have in our schools and universities, it’s a huge step, not just for us but for budding enthusiasts across the region. I hope our success inspires others to break new ground and explore their passions.
Now, let’s talk about my love for space. As a kid, I idolised Neil Armstrong and Kalpana Chawla, dreaming of being the first on Mars. But as I grew, building rockets became more fascinating than flying them. That’s when I got serious about the space industry. While I still dream of walking on Mars, I’d be equally satisfied building the rocket that gets someone there first.

Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic year, is a special time for Muslims like me and my family in the UAE. It’s a Holy Month where we reflect, feel grateful, and show empathy. During Ramadan, we fast from sunrise to sunset, teaching us self-discipline and
control. It’s not just about skipping meals; it’s a time for spiritual growth.
Eid al Fitr is the big celebration that comes after Ramadan. On Laylat al Qadr, in the last 10 days of Ramadan, the first verses of the Quran were revealed.

Haya, our Emirati Culture and Heritage Lead at DIS, narrates Ramadan traditions, offers guidance on how to navigate the journey of fasting, kindness, and unity in the UAE
We start our fast with the Fajr Athan and break it with the Maghreb Athan. Before Fajr, we eat Suhoor, and when it’s time to break our fast, we have Iftar with dates and a balanced meal. In Ramadan, we also pray an extra nightly prayer called Tarawih.
Showing respect
Giving back is a big part of Ramadan. We donate to charity, called Sadaqah and Zakat, helping those in need. My family and I make food bags for those less fortunate. It’s heartwarming to give back and brings our community together.
For non-Muslim friends, showing respect during Ramadan is easy. Dress modestly and avoid eating or drinking publicly during fasting hours.

Now, let’s talk about the delicious part – the food! We break our fast with dates, followed by traditional Emirati dishes like Harees, Lugaymat, Ragag, and meat or chicken. Drinks like Vimto and Karak add sweetness to our meals. Family and friends often share meals and desserts during this time.
School hours are shorter during Ramadan, and we have special lessons about the Holy Month. At my school – Deira International School - we volunteer for a food drive, giving us a chance to help our community.
Remember, Ramadan is not just a time for fasting; it’s a time for reflection, gratitude, and creating wonderful memories with loved ones.

Favourite memory
Family and friends play a big role during Ramadan. We gather to break our fast together, strengthening our bonds. Women and men may pray separately, but afterward, we enjoy games and TV shows together.
In our family, we have a tradition of making Jalabiyas, traditional dresses, and applying Henna before Ramadan begins.
My favourite memory is from the night before Eid when I was nine. Cooking with my aunt and grandma, learning our traditional recipes, and spending the night with my cousins in my grandma’s Majlis. We stayed up late, sharing stories, watching movies, and waking up early for Eid prayer. It reminded me of the importance of family and created lasting memories.

AFEF launches groundbreaking initiative that aims to work collaboratively with other local schools in designing, developing, and advancing curriculums
Most school curriculums worldwide are outdated and in need of phasing out,” Simon O'Connor says, as matter of factly.
Talking animatedly in his office, one can clearly tell this is something close to his heart.
“No doubt the world is evolving rapidly with new technologies, jobs and careers are evolving, hence outdated curriculums may not align with the skills required in the modern workforce, leaving students ill-prepared for the changing job landscape. That’s why we must act now!”
Education landscape
To join this call, and in a groundbreaking move, the Al Futtaim Education Foundation (AFEF) has unveiled its Centre for Education Action Research (CEAR), a pioneering initiative aimed at revolutionising the educational landscape in Dubai. Under the leadership of its Director Simon O’Connor and Administrator Samantha Fernandes, the Centre is set to spearhead transformative change through evidence-based practices and collaborative efforts, with the goal of aligning curriculums with the evolving global education scenario.
Situated at the Deira International School, CEAR has emerged as a trailblazing centre for education research, not only dedicated to elevating AFEF schools but also playing a pivotal role in shaping education on a broader scale.
“At CEAR we are committed to establishing a robust platform for education action research, collaborating with educational institutions, governments, and corporate entities to advance best practices in education,” O’Connor affirms.
Leveraging partnerships
Samantha Fernandes, the Educator Administrator at CEAR, echoes this commitment, stating, “Our ambition is to revolutionise education in the country, leveraging partnerships with local and global leaders. The UAE government’s significant investments in curriculum development and technology integration have created a favourable environment for AFEF to pioneer this constructive change in education.”
By adopting a collaborative approach, CEAR has been engaging other educators, school leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to bridge the gap between research and application.
O’Connor highlights, “So far, we have been joined by seven other schools in Dubai, and through these partnerships and knowledge-sharing, CEAR aspires to create a global community dedicated to advancing education reforms.”
“Our ambition is to revolutionise education in the country, leveraging partnerships with local and global leaders,” says Samantha Fernandes

Encouraging collaboration
One significant collaboration is with the University of Birmingham Dubai’s Action Research Network, conducting workshops on developing action research in schools.
Samantha Fernandes adds, “These dynamic learning experiences will equip individuals with valuable skills, encourage collaboration, and empower them to conduct meaningful research.”
Dedicated to involving teachers and school leaders in education action research, CEAR views them as critical agents of change in the classroom.
O’Connor notes, “CEAR equips educators with the means and a platform to investigate new interests

and promote research studies related to education action. In this regard, educators can guide their professional development, document successful interventions, and elevate teaching standards.”
The Centre also aims to support researchers by publishing their work in an in-house annual publication and providing opportunities to present findings at an annual conference. This not only enhances individual professional development but also contributes to a culture of reflection and continuous improvement within schools.
“Outdated curriculums may not align with the skills required in the modern workforce, leaving students ill-prepared for the changing job landscape. That’s why we must act now!”
Official launch
CEAR’s research areas, being developed in collaboration with academic and education partners, cover diverse aspects of education, including teaching and learning methodologies, student well-being, the impact of technology on learning outcomes, inclusive education, modern foreign languages, coaching, leadership development, and more.
The programme will be officially launched in April 2024, and Samantha has called on other educators and partners to join the movement, to actively contribute to the transformative journey of education locally, and globally.
“Whether you’re a teacher, researcher, or just passionate about education, CEAR invites you to connect and explore collaboration opportunities, share knowledge as we work towards creating a community focused on revamping and advancing education,” she urges.

Dubai’s private education landscape is undergoing a transformational shift. A new dawn emerged as Her Excellency Aisha Abdulla Miran stepped into the role of Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), succeeding the esteemed Dr Abdulla Al Karam, who has been at the helm since the organisation’s inception in 2006.

She expressed her appreciation for her predecessor’s contributions and emphasised her commitment to continuity and progress, saying, “No doubt, Dr Al Karam has developed the KHDA to greater heights. We now have over 320 private schools in Dubai and growing. His efforts laid a solid foundation for us to build upon. We are ready to take the next step forward.” As the torchbearer of change, H.E.
Aisha’s vision extends beyond mere numbers. She envisions a collaborative effort to foster innovation and adaptability in Dubai’s educational ecosystem.
Quality of education
During a courtesy call by some board members of the Al Futtaim Education Foundation (AFEF), H.E. Aisha asserted; “We are not just aiming to increase the number of schools in Dubai; we are striving to cultivate an environment where students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-evolving world.”

Project AGHSAN
The collaborative spirit extends beyond administrative circles, as H.E. Aisha delved into discussions with Dr Farah Sarraj, Chief Corporate Officer at Al-Futtaim School Management Company, who spearheads AFEF’s efforts in promoting the Arabic language
through Project AGHSAN. The initiative is a unique graded reading programme in Arabic, whose goal is to create over 3000 books for children aged 3-11+ by 2025. These books include both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Dr Farah shared further insights into the objectives of Project AGHSAN , emphasising its role in addressing gaps in Arabic reading materials for children.
Collaborative efforts
AFEF started Project AGHSAN to solve some problems that have habitually been with Arabic reading materials. These problems include books that are too hard for children to comprehend, too much focus on fiction, and content that doesn’t relate to modern life. Another
issue is that there hasn’t been a standard system for levelling children’s books. “Our aim is to provide diverse and engaging reading materials that cater to the needs and interests of young learners. Through collaborative efforts with the KHDA, we can elevate the standard of Arabic literacy in Dubai,” Dr Farah asserted.
H.E. Aisha took keen interest in AFEF’s dedication to promoting the Arabic language in its schools. While expressing admiration for those efforts, she remarked, “It’s inspiring to see initiatives like Project AGHSAN paving the way for enhanced learning experiences. Collaboration between educational stakeholders is crucial in achieving our shared goals.”
Journey of transformation
Kerry Ross, Chief Operations Officer at Al-Futtaim School Management Company, similarly echoed sentiments of collaboration, expressing excitement about future endeavours with the KHDA.
“We look forward to collaborating more with the KHDA. By working together, we can leverage our collective strengths to create a more inclusive and innovative learning environment
for students,” Kerry said, underscoring the importance of partnership in driving educational progress.
As Dubai’s private education sector embarks on a journey of transformation, the spirit of collaboration and innovation serves as the guiding force. With visionary leaders like H.E Aisha Abdulla Miran at the helm, the future holds boundless possibilities for nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators.

AGHSAN: THE FUTURE OF LITERACY IN ARABIC
How a new initiative is unlocking a new chapter for the young, one book at a time
Aquick glance at the walls at Al Futtaim Education Foundation schools reveals a vibrant testament to the Arabic language. Illustrative pictures adorned with Arabic wording are not merely decorative; they are a deliberate showcase of the Foundation’s mission vis-à-vis the Arabic language.
The Foundation, since its inception, has supported Deira International School and Universal American School, in offering a unique experience to Arabic learners. The vision of the Foundation, nonetheless, stretches further beyond the 3000+ students that attend its schools.
Through the launch of Project AGHSAN, the most comprehensive graded reading programme in the Arab world, in October 2023, AFEF aims to revolutionize Arabic literacy for over 180 million children across the Arab world and beyond.
Joy of reading Arabic
Started in 2022, through the generous funding of the Al Futtaim Education Foundation, and in partnership with Jabal
Amman Publishers, Project AGHSAN stands as a pioneering force in the realm of Arabic graded reading programmes. Dr Farah Sarraj, the Chief Corporate Officer at Al-Futtaim School Management Company and the project’s visionary leader, elucidates, “AGHSAN gives students the confidence to read fluently in Arabic by exposing them to sounds, syllables, words and phrases that are appropriate to their reading competence level. With AGHSAN, our ambition is to touch the lives of every Arab child, fostering a profound and enduring connection with their heritage through the joy of reading.”
Cultural identity
With a target of publishing over 3000 titles by 2026, AGHSAN is diligently working to fill the void in quality Arabic reading materials for children aged 3-11+. The project has already seen significant success, with more than 500 titles published, each thoughtfully designed to engage, educate, and inspire young minds with a rich mix of fiction and non-fiction.
“Our initiative transcends traditional learning methods by integrating the
Arabic language into students’ lives in engaging and imaginative ways,” Dr Sarraj shares. “But the true measure of our success will be in reaching every Arab child, regardless of their location, providing them with the tools to master their language and embrace their cultural identity with pride.”
Legacy of literacy
As Project AGHSAN continues to expand its reach, its foundational principles of inclusivity, innovation, and inspiration remain steadfast. It is a beacon of hope for a future where every child can access the joy of reading in Arabic, fostering a generation that is literate, thoughtful, and connected to their rich cultural heritage.

Her session inspired attendees to embrace change as an opportunity for growth and transformation in the ever-evolving landscape of international education.
Working with Gen Zs
Day Two commenced with Simon O’Connor’s keynote on “Understanding and Working with Gen Zs,” illuminating on the nuances of engaging with the next generation of parents. O’Connor’s insights into Gen Z’s values, preferences, and communication styles equipped educators with tools to engage effectively with this diverse and digitally native cohort.
His keynote underscored the importance of empathy, authenticity, and adaptability in building meaningful connections with Gen Z parents and their children.
Breakout sessions offered practical advice, with Kerry Ross from Al Futtaim Education Foundation addressing “Crafting Compelling Narratives: Building Emotional Connections for Customer Loyalty.” Kerry put a spotlight on the evolving landscape of school marketing strategies, underscoring the imperative shift towards integrating themes of wellbeing and sustainability into their narratives. This shift, she argued, is not just a trend but a necessary evolution reflecting society’s growing concerns and values.
Kerry’s narration of the ‘Liter of Light’ project demonstrated a compelling illustration of this shift. The project, which ingeniously turns discarded bottles into sources of light, is not only a testament to innovation in recycling but also serves a profound social purpose, by reaching out to remote villages in countries like Kenya and the Philippines, delivering sustainable light sources to communities that lack access to electricity.
During the event, participants were equipped with tools and kits to assemble the lights themselves. Engaging in this hands-on activity, they found the process surprisingly straightforward and enjoyable. The real moment of wonder came when they successfully lit up the devices they had put together, their faces glowing with the joy of accomplishment.

O’Connor,
Director - Deira International School Chief Education Officer - Al-Futtaim School Management Company
I am delighted to welcome our readers to this first edition of Momentum. Schools are incredibly complex organisations involving thousands of people every day – and every day wonderful events occur. These could be exciting trips around the world, sporting events, artistic performances and even individual students achieving challenging personal goals.
Momentum provides an opportunity to record these stories and share them across our communities. Furthermore, this publication provides a showcase for our students to share their writing skills – I do hope you enjoy sharing an insight into these incredible events which make up the daily pattern of life in our schools.
Dr. Farah Sarraj,
Chief Corporate Officer, Al-Futtaim School Management Company
It is a very proud moment for the Al Futtaim Education Foundation to launch Momentum, a documentary aggregator of all the great work that the Foundation has produced and will produce over the years.
By encouraging input and contributions from all stakeholders; students, teachers, families, governors and partners,
Momentum promises to reflect the wealth of talent, creativity, and engagement that the Al Futtaim Education Foundation has within its community. I look froward to the learning that Momentum will bring me and others.
Kevin Loft, Director, Universal American School
We are excited to introduce another channel of communication to our school and wider community. Momentum will allow us another way to showcase and celebrate the work and achievements of our students, staff and families while also providing us an opportunity to discuss the many educational and school-based topics that impact our families.
One of our values as a school is collaboration and we look forward to Momentum being a means to support us to deliver on this.
Kerry Ross, Chief Operations Officer, Al-Futtaim School Management Company
Momentum serves as more than just a channel for keeping parents and teachers informed about the latest news and events within our schools and the Al Futtaim Education Foundation. It’s a valuable opportunity for our students to display their talents, interests, and viewpoints.
Through crafting articles, poems, stories, reviews, or conducting interviews, they hone their writing abilities, articulate their ideas, and convey their passions effectively. Moreover, Momentum stands as a significant platform for our teachers to illuminate the happenings within the school environment. By documenting their activities, projects, or accomplishments, they can effectively communicate with parents and fellow educators, exchange best practices, and celebrate their achievements.
