As the end of the academic year comes to a close, I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect and be thankful for the year that has passed. Schools are busy places where we seldom have a quiet week. This constant energy resonates in our students as they navigate the journey of growth and development within the school. Serving as the Director of Universal American School has been an honor, guiding our dedicated staff, interacting with students, and engaging with the broader community is something I am extremely fortunate to experience on a daily basis.
I firmly believe that our school's journey is just beginning, and UAS will undoubtedly flourish in the years ahead, becoming an even more amazing place to learn and work.
I extend my sincere appreciation to our staff for their adaptability and innovative approach to delivering challenge year after year. Since UAS opened its doors in 2005, it has been the tireless efforts of our staff that have shaped the school, and they continue to lead us as we journey forward.
As a school, we remain committed to growth and evolution. This year has been pivotal in enhancing our facilities and expanding the offerings to our students and community. The revitalization of the playground, the introduction of the new Canteen, Elementary Sports Hall, and Staff PD Space have enriched the student experience. Looking ahead, we are dedicated to ongoing development, with recent additions like the new track and a comprehensive summer break program set to enhance our collective experience in the coming year.
To our parents, I express heartfelt gratitude for your belief and enthusiasm in supporting our students, staff, and the school. Special thanks to the parent support groups that have collaborated with us, challenged us, and ensured the continuous progress of our school. We eagerly anticipate strengthening this partnership as we explore new opportunities in the upcoming year.
Our school thrives as a learning community, where families, teachers, students, staff, and governors collaborate to provide the best learning opportunities for our young people. This year has been filled with cherished memories—in classrooms, on sports fields, in auditoriums, on stages, and virtually, connecting screens across Dubai, the UAE, and beyond. This yearbook serves as a testament to these moments and celebrates the unity that makes our school community special.
For those students and families bidding farewell this year, embarking on new journeys to universities, returning home, or exploring other adventures, we hope you carry positive memories of your time at UAS. May these memories stay with you as you step forward to your next challenge. We wish you every success and eagerly await updates on your achievements. We hope you come back to visit us and stay connected through our new Alumni Program.
On behalf of myself, the dedicated staff, school governors and owners of Universal American School, I extend warm wishes for a safe and joyous summer. We eagerly anticipate your return in September, rejuvenated and ready for the exciting endeavors that lie ahead
Best wishes,
Kevin Loft
In 2024, we stand at the threshold of a pivotal moment in history—a year where the global community is aiming for a common goal: sustainability. The Green Team has aimed, and will continue, to commit to fostering sustainable practices within our school community; a call to action if you will! As we embark on this journey, we recognize that our actions today have the power to shape the world of tomorrow.
With each step towards sustainability we embark on a journey that transcends us to embrace holistic well-being. From reducing our carbon footprint to taking part in eco-conscious initiatives, every decision we make resonates far beyond the confines of our campus. It's about cultivating a mindset where conservation isn't just a choice; it's a way of life.
In the year of sustainability, we invite every member of our school community to join hands in this pursuit. Together, we have the power to create profound change —not only within the walls of UAS but also in the broader tapestry of our interconnected world.
On behalf of the Green Team, we thank you for the collective and consistent efforts of our entire school community. We are not just turning over a new leaf— we're nurturing a forest of possibilities. Let us seize this opportunity to cultivate a legacy of sustainability, one small act at a time.
Welcome to 2024: The Year of Sustainability!
Dear Students, Parents, Teachers and Staff,
We are approaching the end of another exceptional school year. Together, we have made this year one to remember, and I will look back on it fondly.
To the graduating class, as you move forward into the next chapter of your journey, know that you will always have a special place in our UAS community. We are immensely proud of all that you have achieved and we have every confidence that you will continue to make us proud in all your future endeavour's. Come back and visit us often!
Wishing you all a safe, joyful and restful summer vacation.
Warm regards, Rianne Fox
Watching you overcome hurdles and thrive as UAS students this academic year has been a true highlight for me.
Remember, even if you are on the right track—you'll get run over if you just sit there! So keep moving, keep learning and most importantly, always find reasons to laugh along the way.
Congratulations on another great year at UAS!

As COP 28 arrived in Dubai, UAS found inspiration to embark on numerous sustainability endeavors. Throughout this year, a multitude of students participated in initiatives and field trips focused on climate change and sustainability. Activities ranged from elementary students creating artwork from recycled materials to high school students attending COP 28, alongside various other projects.
Highschool students celebrated Sustainability in Islam by hosting an exhibition where guest speaker Ms. Eman from Dubai Municipality shared impactful initiatives during a thought-provoking discussion panel and our talented students showcased their artwork, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability
Grade 5 PYP Exhibition showcased incredible student research on vital sustainability topics such as industry, climate change, poverty, and clean water
Grade 11 students embarked on an enlightening journey with Al Futtaim Automotive and Dr. Wael Bakhaty from the Automotive Talent Centre where they engaged in a workshop featuring ‘Climate Freak’ and toured some Electrical Vehicle Simulators
Elementary students were tasked with crafting art pieces from recycled materials during an interactive competition aimed at fostering sustainable initiatives
Getting the opportunity to visit COP28 as a member of the Green Team at UAS was such a great experience! I had the opportunity to learn so much more about sustainability and the role it plays in so many different sectors and industries nowadays. It was also so interesting and insightful to learn more about, and see how the UAE is starting to incorporate so many sustainable practices into their own culture and lifestyle. Furthermore, there were so many exciting and educational pavilions that I had the opportunity to wander into. It was overall such a great experience and I am really glad that I had the chance to attend such an exciting event.
Pari, Grade 11
As members of Green Team, we got the incredible opportunity to go to COP28. We saw many attractions that helped enhance our knowledge about sustainability. One of my favorite attractions was the ocean section. Witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of pollution on marine ecosystems was truly eye-opening. Visiting COP28 has definitely had an impact on me as you can clearly see the effect that unsustainable living choices has on the world, it has encouraged me to regard sustainability in several aspects of my life - from carrying a reusable water to avoiding fast fashion. I would encourage everyone to learn a bit more about COP28 and sustainability.
Anoushka, Grade 11
I was part of an initiative called the Liter of Light, and we were able to create lights out of sustainable materials such as the plastic bottles to bring light to villages where electricity is scarce or non-existent. These lights last up to five years. I was able to collaborate with so many wonderful people, and we were able to give back more as a group than what we're able to individually. Being part of this allowed me to grow as an individual because I learned that I'm able to do more than what I limit myself to. This was such a great way to learn more about people in need and what we can do to help those less fortunate than us AND we managed to set a new Guinness World Record as a part of the Al Futtaim Education Foundation!!
-Noor Abdulhussain
Al-Futtaim’s attempt to shine a light on sustainability and community impact has set a new world record. UAS joined AFEF to help create an awe-inspiring display of 3,000 solar lanterns, forming a radiant Ghaf tree. This has been named the World’s Largest Solar Power Light Bulb Display by Guinness World Records. Each lantern will bring light to homes within underdeveloped communities, demonstrating the power of collaborative action for a sustainable, brighter future.

During units, we build on learners’ knowledge and interests, with a focus on how to learn: asking questions, finding answers, and making sense of new information.
Students have opportunities to inquire into areas of interest and share their learning with their peers and the wider UAS community.
Our PYP units of inquiry incorporate local and global issues that include multiple subject areas. The integrated nature of the units allow students to make connections between the subjects, which lead to the understanding of big ideas or concepts, resulting in more effective and transferable learning.
We recognize that children develop at different rates and that each student is an individual with needs that may differ from others in their classroom. We use a variety of assessment techniques to create a learning profile for each student and design personalized classroom experiences to meet each individual student’s needs.
At UAS, we believe that students are most successful when our community is strong. We encourage our students to participate in After School Activities (ASAs) and families to attend or volunteer to assist at school events. In addition, we invite parents to join us at school for Back to School Night, Parent Conferences, Coffee Mornings, and workshops. Participation may look different for every family, however, students and our entire community benefit when a true partnership between students, parents, teachers, and school leaders develops.
“Reflecting on this school year, we've witnessed remarkable growth, laughter, and learning in our 1st-grade classroom. From our first weeks of settling in back at school to our presentations such as our fables + shadows puppet shows and engineering bridges or boats to cross the water - each day has been a chapter in the students’ journey of discovery . . .
. . . As the year comes to a close, let's celebrate the achievements, the milestones, and the memories we've created together like the fun field trips to Aventura and Green Planet, and exciting classroom projects like helping Batman make his Bat-sign bigger. Here's to a fantastic year filled with endless possibilities and to the bright futures ahead for our 1st graders!”

Grade 9's worked hard this year as they made the move from Middle School to High School. Their achievements have been awesome throughout this academic year. The key word that stands out is growth. Seeing the students settle into high school and begin to understand how to make it succeed was an academic highlight. There was tremendous progress in the way students organized themselves, participated in class, handled pressure and pushed themselves in and out of school to reach higher than ever before. On a social level, I saw students beginning to mature, form new friendships and support each other. Our football, volleyball and basketball teams were lined with many grade 9 students who made a difference on their teams.
Getting used to having to learn how to master the codes of their new locks was a great metaphor for how students addressed challenges this year. At first, when they couldn’t open them, it was the locks’ fault. Then, once some of them got the hang of opening them, they began to build in confidence and started to help others. After a few days, the grade 9's were experts at locks. Once students got over the anxieties and uncertainties of the first quarter, they used that experience to power their growth, support each other and move onto the next challenge. Similarly, once students began to trust their teachers to guide them and put in the hard work on the tasks assigned to them, they realized they were capable of fulfilling great success.
Students let their energy loose during PE, playing softball, badminton and volleyball, but also had the chance to learn theory behind healthy living. Grade 9 shone when there were opportunities to come together and celebrate. It’s clear that some lasting friendships have been made this year, and it’s been amazing to see the way that we as a community welcomed so many new grade 9's into our school. Some special moments would include the spirit that many students showed during International Day, assemblies, Halloween, the visit to Motiongate and the Fringe Festival.

This has however given the students some important skills they can carry forward into future learning. Other initiatives, such as the Market Day event was a success whereby the Business Entrepreneurships students took responsibility for their projects and business ideas and for the success of their project. There have been some excellent fund-raising initiatives this year lead by some Grade 11 students, namely Hearts of Humanities and the excellent efforts by this group of students. Charity work has been a focus for many this year and has for the most part been incredibly successful and heartwarming to see just how much some of our students care for the wider community.
As Grade Leader, I am proud and honoured to witness and to be a part of the spirit and character of our grade that shine through in the everyday interactions and experiences that bring us together as a cohesive and supportive community. I look forward to seeing how these young adults grow in their final year of high school hoping that I played a small part of shaping them to be the best version of themselves. Being young people who take responsibility for their actions, celebrate their achievements. Learning from the moments that did not go as planned and embracing those moments that made them smile and laugh.

My experience in the IB has been very impactful, as it has challenged me academically while allowing me to develop many skills, such as critical thinking and time management, which are crucial for success in my future. I am able to engage in a diverse range of subjects that broaden my knowledge. Overall, I believe that taking part in the program, although rigorous and difficult, has been instrumental in preparing me for future challenges”.
Saida & Saina Ghiasi - Grade 11
“The IB diploma program is, as one might expect, quite difficult. The content, exams and assignments were all challenging. The depth of knowledge that needed to be cultivated and the sheer amount of information that needed to be covered in order to perform relatively well was incomparable to any other academic program I’ve involved myself in. This did not surprise me. It was always going to be hard. What did surprise me was how substantial a part the IB played in my life beyond academics. From the start, I found that more or less everything that I did was in some way connected to the IB. In this way, it isn’t only difficult but incredibly demanding. It’s made me so terribly tired, but, alongside that, I’ve come to be as fulfilled and satisfied as I’ve ever been”.
Lu’ay Nsiri - Grade 12
"Throughout the two years I have spent in the IBDP, I've struggled with workloads and stress beyond comprehension. The responsibility of balancing six subjects, extracurriculars (as CAS), whilst having to write a 4000 word essay and waffle for 1600 words about knowledge has forever scarred my mind. However, the trials and tribulations I faced were greatly alleviated because of the teachers I have had. They too had many responsibilities, yet were always able to help whenever I needed it the most".
Teimoor Omer - Grade 12
“I would say the overall AP experience can be linked to a high pressure, high gain scenario. The UAS AP system seems to incubate a keen time sense and higher levels of self-discipline within students that will undoubtedly help them along the road. Time management and self-reliance have been my two main takeaways from my AP experience at UAS, especially with the Mozart hallway music every hour”.
Faramarz Bagheri - Grade 11
“Taking AP courses in UAS has been a transformative experience for me. These classes have challenged me in ways that other courses simply couldn't. The rigorous curriculum pushed me to develop unique skills, like critical thinking and time management, which are essential for higher education and beyond. It allowed me to gain confidence in my academic abilities. By the end of each AP course, I felt a sense of accomplishment. The rigorous exams and challenging assignments pushed me to strive for excellence, and achieving success in these courses made me feel capable of handling whatever challenges come my way”.
Hames Alharbi - Grade 12
“As someone who had taken 8 AP courses in 2 years, , I've experienced its flexibility and rigor. As I had taken a range of different courses, it allowed me to explore my interests deeply, and decide the right career path for me. One of the best aspects is the option for self-study; it lets me prepare for AP exams on my own schedule, teaching me self-discipline and time management. The college-level courses had provided me with excellent preparation for university. The AP Program has not only prepared me academically but also provided a solid foundation of skills and experiences that will benefit me throughout my life”.
Lea Bou Reslan - Grade 12
Going to Cambodia was an amazing experience. My favorite part of the trip was the Camp as we met amazing people. We were able to help the community by making water pots and cement tiles, which we later laid in the local schoolyard. We got to disconnect from our normal lives and become immersed in our surroundings, learning a lot each day.

“Founded by Omar Al Daour, this donation project’s aim is to raise awareness on the ongoing humanitarian issue in Gaza, where a lot of people are suffering and the dreams and hopes of people our age are at risk. Many young adults and teenagers want to take action and make an impact. Therefore, with the help and support of co-founders Lara Nassar, Rimaz Abu Saleem, and Marya Droubi, Hearts of Humanity was launched! This project wouldn't have been possible without the supportive students at UAS. It belongs to us as a community united, raising awareness and helping one another as a humanity, with hearts full of compassion and nobility.”

“With Ms Domaine's brilliant guidance, I was able to express myself in IB Art. Through the making of the exhibition, I was able to learn a lot about myself and what is important to me. I dealt with a lot of personal conflict about an essential theme to me: Coming of Age. I lost track of time while making many of the artworks in the exhibition, and I hope my works reflect such passion and love. I am very grateful for having a really supportive teacher like Ms Domanie, who nurtured a safe atmosphere while pushing us to fulfill our potential in art. The exhibition was just like how I imagined it to be, and I was in great awe on the opening day. It was an unforgettable exhibition.”

“I had an enriching experience participating in the Islamic exhibition. I thoroughly enjoyed creating a meaningful artwork and delving into new aspects of Islam and its diverse representations.”

This school year, Grade 12 students have been working hard. They got letters of recommendation, applied to colleges, got accepted and now move forward into their futures.
Besides studying, they've also organized a bunch of fun events. They had a senior breakfast, a Halloween breakfast and movie night, a Christmas lunch, and a chill senior breakfast in the green field. They even had a senior ditch day and watched the sunrise. To raise money for prom night, they sold flowers on Valentine's Day and they have left us with some final lasting memories during senior fun day and prom!
In our daily classes, announcements, and monthly get-togethers, we focused on helping students develop in various ways. We taught them how to communicate effectively, collaborate, manage their time wisely, and think creatively. We also encouraged them to stay curious, learn new things, make positive choices, and show kindness to others. Our aim was to build a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. As the grade 12 level lead, I ensured this by reminding students daily about the importance of caring for their mental and physical well-being, ensuring they feel good both inside and out. I also created a safe space in room 2209 where students could come to sit, express themselves, spend time, and feel heard.
Achieving all of the above is a remarkable accomplishment for Grade 12, considering the pressure and stress they experience in their final year. Many students actively participated in community service and supported various events at school, including the arts and fringe festival to name a couple. One of the standout moments was when Ahmad AlJallaf received the Caring and Balanced Award. He expressed disbelief, mentioning, "This is the first time I've ever received an award." As the grade level lead, I ensured that everyone was acknowledged and their voices heard.
