I am delighted to welcome you to our annual Yearbook for the year 2023-24 I hope that these pages give you a flavour of the many facets of Deira International School As you will see, it has been another year packed with opportunities and achievements for all our students It has been both a delight and privilege to witness all that the students have been involved in over the last three terms

The year started with the celebration of some wonderful examination results. At GCSE our Year 11 cohort achieved 56% of results at either A*/A with over 78% achieving A*-B. The IB2 cohort was also incredibly successful with an average point score of 34.6 and 45% of the cohort achieving above 35 points overall. This success has enabled our students to move on to universities around the world, and it has been wonderful to hear of their continued accomplishments. Our students’ academic success in all year groups is the basis of the school and this was instrumental in Deira International School being judged as Outstanding in this year’s annual inspection We are delighted with this recognition, confirming the DIS’s position as one of the leading schools in Dubai

Beyond inspections, the school has also been recognised internationally for the work that takes place here every day The school won ‘School Team of the Year’ in the Education Excellence Awards 2023. In addition, it has been placed on the list of the top 150 schools in the world in the Global Schools Index by Carfax Education. Particularly pleasing was the Platinum Certification by ‘Best School to Work’ which has recognised the extensive work which has taken place to ensure the wellbeing of all in our community.

Beyond the classroom the students have been demonstrating their talents in a wide range of activities. The range of sports in which the school manages to excel has been a continual source of pride This year the sports of Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Football, Cricket, Swimming and Athletics have continued to thrive The school stage has also been the platform for some wonderful performances, and I sure those of us lucky enough to see the productions of Mary Poppins, Blood Brothers as well as the Performing Arts Showcase will be long remembered Furthermore, there have been many very special community events through the year, including the National Day and International Day celebrations and the wonderful Ramadan Iftar.

I would like to thank the staff whose commitment and continuous hard work have supported the students throughout the year. Their efforts have been the foundation for the success of the students’ both academically and beyond the classroom. It is also important to recognise the contribution that parents make to these achievements with their constant care and encouragement The successes of our students are a reflection of their efforts and the support that they receive and I know that they are hugely grateful I would like to pay particular thanks to the Al Futtaim Education Foundation, and the support of our Governing body without which none of this would be possible I very much look forward to all that next year will bring

Our students have excelled across the board, showcasing their efforts in all curriculum areas Our exciting theme days and school trips sparked curiosity and creativity, leading to impressive project-based outcomes that were often shared during our Parent Share sessions With the well-being of our students being paramount, this year we have strengthened our well-being provision through bespoke curriculum sessions and special assemblies, ensuring every child feels supported both emotionally and academically Our continued development of the House system has been a resounding success, promoting community, collaboration and well-being

Celebrating diversity is at the heart of DIS Our cultural curriculum links and International Day were vibrant, fostering a sense of global citizenship and mutual respect among our young learners

This year the students expanded their involvement in CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), notably through the development of our Forest School as well as getting involved in wonderful local and global initiatives to support the less fortunate, such as the Ramadan Drive and Walk for Gaza. These experiences have instilled a sense of social responsibility and empathy, aligning with our ethos of giving back. Your engagement as parents has been invaluable, from attending Parent Share and community whole school events, to participating in workshops and DISPA coffee mornings, your contributions have enriched our school community.

Together, we have made this year a memorable one, and we anticipate even greater accomplishments in the years to come at DIS Primary.

We hope this summary encapsulates the spirit of the past year and our collective aspirations for the future. Thank you for being an integral part of our school’s journey.

FOUNDATION STAGE 1

We have had a fantastic year in FS1 this year. The teachers are so proud of how brave and resilient our youngest learners have been at settling into ‘big school’. The children have been Trying Troys when tackling tricky tasks, such as counting and using Phonics in their writing activities. They were Esha Explorers on our trips to Mushrif Park, Dubai Safari Park and Oli Oli, exploring and being curious about the world around them. Every child has been a Have a Go Hamdan at various physical activities, such as weekly swimming lessons and taking part in Sports Day. The teachers have been particularly impressed by the students’ determination and collaboration to work together as a team, showing qualities of many different Learner Attributes when learning in class or competing in whole school House competitions.

We have made some incredible memories this year, from formulating exciting Science experiments to mixing up messy play activities, there have been lots of smiles, fun and laughter throughout the year. The students have also cultivated remarkable skills in Wellbeing, including the ability to communicate about and manage their emotions, resolve conflicts, and establish enduring friendships. I look forward to hearing about their future success’ and wish the students all the best in FS2

FOUNDATION STAGE 2

FS2 have had an amazing year. The teachers are very impressed at the development of each and every child. We have had lots of fun everyday in school. The children have made lots of friends and are very kind to each other. We are now superstar readers and writers thanks to all of our fun phonics lessons. We were Esha Explorers on our trips to Dubai Safari Park, Pizza Express and Oli Oli. We loved working in our House teams on special events such as Sports Day. We all made fantastic projects about our home countries on International Day and even presented these to our friends. The teachers are very proud of our communication and language skills and how much love and respect we have for many different countries. On Careers Day, we dressed up as what we would like to be when we grow up. We also loved our Under the Sea dress up day.

We have had many highlights with FS2 this year. It has been a pleasure to watch them grow and develop. During independent learning time, we have made many memories. There have been lots of fun role plays, amazing buildings planned and constructed and lots of creativity shown in many ways. We have enjoyed learning self – regulation skills in Wellbeing and supporting our friends with their wellbeing in school too. It has been a wonderful year and we are definitely ready for lots of fun in Year One!

YEAR 1

What a fantastic year it has been for our Year 1 superstars! A year of learning, growing, and exploring through lots of fun, creative and challenging experiences. The Year 1 teaching team have loved being a part of your children’s learning journey and we are so proud of all they have achieved as we come to the end of Year 1.

All children demonstrated their Trying Troy mindset in our sporting events this year and took on competition positively. We have a very active set of Year 1 children who have loved cheering on their teammates at Sports Day and working collaboratively when taking on our school 30x30 challenges.

Our little explorers have had a blast in Forest Schools, discovering natures secrets and investigating wildlife. It has been a huge highlight of the year and we have loved seeing the children become Esha Explorers and learn in a new, exciting way.

They especially loved getting muddy and becoming at one with nature. It was a wonderful to see them embracing and immersing themselves in the experience!

Always willing to get involved, our enthusiastic Year 1 children have loved being a part of school events such as National Day and International Day. They have been excellent communicators when sharing their traditions and cultures with their friends.

In the classroom, friendships have blossomed, and the children have tackled challenges together with determination and teamwork. Whether it was solving problems, collaborating on projects, or simply sharing stories, every moment was filled with laughter, learning and growth. We are very proud of how far they have come and can’t wait for them to flourish in their next chapter.

YEAR 2

An incredible year of growth, learning, friendshi and fun! We have seen the children flourish n only with their academics, but also with the Learner Attributes and evolving personalities. just a short space of time, these children ha grown in independence, curiosity and also forme new social bonds. We have seen the children evol into young communicators through their growin teamwork skills and emotional resilience. We ha seen them be open minded and committed to the learning during unprecedented rain days and w have observed their risk taker skills develop as th grow with confidence and learn the values making mistakes. The Year 2 students have al developed their knowledgeable and think Learner Attributes throughout the year, as o learning has flowed across different termly theme The children proved to be sustainable citize through our first topic ‘Life Below Water’. We lear We learnt about the causes and impacts of wat pollution and how, we as individuals, can care f our oceans and its creatures.

Our highlights from this topic were making sustainable costumes using recycled materials and creating posters to encourage others to protect our oceans. We then moved on to the world of dinosaurs! Undoubtedly, our visit from the TeachRex team was our favourite moment from this topic. We gained new knowledge about these prehistoric creatures from meeting Dinky Binky the dinosaur and her friends, and the children had a fantastic time dressing up as explorers and palaeontologists. Through our final Minecraft topic, the children have drawn upon and developed their technical skill sets, preparing them for the evergrowing future of technology.

It has a been a joy to be a part of such a significant year of the children’s learning journeys and development. We wish them the very best for their next chapter and hope that this yearbook reminds them of cherished memories from this year.

Kate Jeffery - Acting Year Group Lead

YEAR 3

We have had a wonderful year in Year 3, having been on an unforgettable journey through the academic year, full laughter, learning, and cherished memories. I have been so proud of the progress all the children have made – both in their academic learning, but even more importantly how they have developed into kind, inquisitive and well round individuals.

There have been many highlights this year. Venturing beyond the classroom, our energetic spirits took us to Virgin Active Gym, where we embraced the thrill of physical activity and healthy living. We also embarked on an exciting excursion to Gracia Farm, where we explored nature's wonders and learnt all about where are food comes from. We also had those many special days – such as Stone Age day, World Book Day and our mesmerising circus show.

However, my proudest and memories have been those small, day-to-day moments in the classroom where a child finally understands something they have been finding tricky, or a child achieves something they didn’t think they were capable of.

As we bid farewell to Year 3, let this yearbook serve as a testament to the friendships formed, lessons learned, and dreams ignited. Here's to a year of adventure, growth, and endless possibilities.

YEAR 4

Year 4 have had a busy and exciting year at Deira International School. The Year 4 teachers have continued to be impressed by the children’s perseverance and determination to succeed. As young communicators, Year 4 have thrived at collaborating when working in teams both in and out of lessons. They have developed many Learner Attribute skills such as being risktakers, caring and openminded. The children have enjoyed earning House Points this year linked to the different attributes.

Following the Year 4 National Curriculum has benefited our children in numerous ways. We have the autonomy to be creative and develop lessons to make the learning fun and memorable! From creating our very own Zone of Regulation products, to investigating how the digestive system works, to writing our own nonchronological reports about Quidditch linked to our Harry Potter topic, Year 4 are encouraged to ask questions and become inquirers.

What a year it’s been! So many fabulous events to engage the children and immerse them in new experiences. A Year 4 favourite has to be our Roman Day in Term 1! Dressing up as Romans, inviting parents to school to our Roman Museum and creating our own Roman Mosaics in Art.

International Day was a great opportunity to celebrate our diversity in Year 4 and learn from different cultures. Encouraging children to be open to different cultures developed their openminded learner attribute.

“My favourite thing about Year 4 is that the lesson are really fun. I feel happy in school because the teachers are kind and help us to learn ner things. I enjoy playing with my friends and going on fun trips! Also, I feel proud when I get House Points! I’ve already finished my Gold Booklet.” Shiloh 4A

YEAR 5

Our Year 5 cohort have had an extremely busy and exciting year which has been full of highlights. Students have had the opportunity to build on their knowledge and skills, whilst also exploring new topics and areas of interest such as Space and the Vikings. Due to UAE hosting COP 28, our eco-conscious students were provided the opportunity to host their own mini-COP 28 event where they led discussions, activities and workshops aimed at inspiring our school community to enhance sustainability day to day. Our thematic curriculum has enabled students to improve their learner attribute skills such as being reflective and balanced. Displaying empathy for others, students have learned about worldwide issues such Fairtrade. Through individual efforts and whole school competitions, students have enjoyed earning House Points this year for their House Teams.

It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 students participate in so many fabulous events that have engaged and immersed them in a range of new experiences that have taken place both inside and outside the classroom. A great example of this was when the students attended the overnight camp where they took part in a range of risk-taking activities such as trebuchet making, kayaking and snorkeling. The student really enjoyed the Viking dress up day and took great pleasure in welcoming parents into school to showcase some of the incredible work they had produced across a wide range of subjects.

Year 5 have actively participated and contributed to a range of special events that have taken place in school this year including: World Mental Health Day Sports Day, National Day, Mary Poppins the Musical and many more. One of the highlights of the year was International Day where students celebrated their heritage and nationality whilst learning about other cultures from their peers.

YEAR 6

What an exciting and busy year it has been for Year 6 at Deira International School! The children have significantly developed both personally and academically since the beginning of the year and we strongly believe that they are now ready to take the next step in their educational journey. Throughout the topics, activities, and events that the children have been a part of, they have effectively applied all our Learner Attributes. We, as teachers, have been incredibly impressed with the children’s drive to surpass our expectations and produce outstanding pieces of work across the curriculum. The students in Year 6 demonstrated that they are risk takers during our residential trip to Al Ain Adventure. Every student was up for the challenges that presented themselves, developing their team building and communication skills, building bonds with their peers, and overcame fears in the process. The cohort were particularly inspired by COP28 being in Dubai in November 2023, leading to superb presentation to students and parents on the research and projects that they developed to improve agricultural and farming techniques in the UAE.

This not only demonstrated their outstanding creativity, but also their confidence in presenting to others, including students from different countries in the World Scholars Classroom.

The children enjoyed sharing their cultures and traditions during International Day, where it was evident of the number of nations represented across the cohort. As a part of our topic, ‘Can you survive in a world without technology?’, the students demonstrated their critical-thinking skills in evaluating the impact that technology has on others. This culminated in powerful and thought-provoking letters to Microsoft about the dangers of Artificial Technology and a captivating trip to the BYD Showroom to learn about the future of transport. Throughout the year, we have been fortunate to participate in numerous events that the children have thoroughly enjoyed; these events range from BSME Maths competitions where some of our talented mathematicians battled against other schools to Sports Day, which is always a highlight of the year when everyone’s competitive nature is heightened.

It has been wonderful to see so many of our students participate in these events and we hope that the children continue to pursue their passions and interests in the future!

STUDENT Well-being

It has been a fantastic year for wellbeing at DIS! Beginning the year with a whole school celebration of World Mental Health Day, children delved deeper into their learning of emotional articulation, emotional regulation, movement, and connection. Learning about these in all subjects throughout the day developed our understanding that wellbeing is every where!

Alongside this, engaging wellbeing lessons, inviting The Warrior Academy to support us with character development through martial arts, and the launch of Zones of Regulation this year has been a highlight and a huge success!

YEAR 7

Year 7 students have made an impressive transition into secondary school this year, demonstrating their commitment to excellence and independence throughout various achievements. They began the year with an unforgettable experience of DIScation which was held in Fujairah. Students bonded as a year group through various activities and got to know their form tutor on a more personal level. They have embraced the school's values of Respect, Integrity, Collaboration, and Excellence and excelled in completing Golden Ticket Home Learning tasks, actively engaged in the community events including the Festive Markets and International Day and showcased outstanding performances in the school production of "Blood Brothers."

Their active participation in enriching learning opportunities such as CAS Day and Sports day and extracurricular activities, including CCA’s and competitions like BSME and the UKMT, reflects their enthusiasm and dedication to learning outside of the classroom. The last event of this year was the Student-led Conference. It was fantastic to see so much amazing work demonstrated and students discussing and showcasing their learning throughout this year. As always this would not be possible without the support, guidance and motivation of our parents and I thank each and every one of you. We look forward to the continued success of Year 7 students into Year 8 and the many more opportunities for them to flourish in.

YEAR 8

It has been an amazing and fulfilling year for the Year 8 community at DIS The students have shown exceptional dedication, maintaining outstanding progress across all subject areas. Their talents have shone brightly through various CCA activities, including notable achievements like winning the North Dubai Football Trophy and delivering stellar performances in productions such as Blood Brothers. Throughout the year, they've had the opportunity to enjoy exciting rewards days, experiencing the thrills of Motiongate and Warner Bros in Term 1 and Term 3. I would like to extend a special thank you to our Year 8 Form Captains for their hard work in planning and leading events this year, including the Year 8 End of Year celebration. They set a great example by demonstrating our DIS Values every day and are an essential part of our Year 8 community

I have been particularly proud of the resilience and determination the students have shown throughout the exam period. This process is always pressure inducing and really challenges the students at the end of what is a rigorous academic calendar. However, Year 8 have taken this challenge head on and achieved some wonderful outcomes.

As a result of their hard work and commitment, the year 8 community has evolved into a cohesive and conscientious group, consistently embodying the DIS Value. Guiding these students through the challenges of the year has been a pleasure, and I'm confident that their efforts will yield significant rewards by the end of the academic year. I extend my gratitude to parents for their continued support, which plays a pivotal role in enabling our students to reach their full potential. As students prepare to choose their IGCSE subjects next year, it's an exciting time. Students will pick the subjects they're interested in, shaping their academic journey based on their passions and goals. With a range of options available, they have the chance to explore new subjects and take control of their learning. This process is not just about picking classes; it's about discovering themselves and setting the stage for future success. I look forward to guiding our students through this next chapter in their academic lives.

YEAR 9

As the last year of Key Stage 3 unfolds after a rejuvenating summer break, students are gearing up for the exciting journey ahead, with preparations for Key Stage 4 underway. It started with a student taster day, where students got to experience the GCSE subjects which they are not exposed to in KS3. Feedback from the taster day was overwhelmingly positive, with students expressing newfound confidence about transitioning to GCSEs, thanks to their questions being expertly addressed. National Day celebrations were a resounding success, with Year 9 students playing pivotal roles in organising and executing the festivities We enjoyed weekly class challenges which helped to foster a sense of community within the year group outside of an academic setting. Meanwhile, the Design and Technology IKEA competition, led by Ms. Foster and the DT team, provided an exciting platform for students to showcase their creative skills. The commitment of Year 9 students extended beyond the classroom, with impressive participation in various extracurricular activities such as U14 and U16 football, basketball, and swimming galas. Their enthusiasm and dedication were duly rewarded with a thrilling trip to Motion Gate, marking the culmination of a successful term and acknowledging their hard work.

Term two taster week provided a unique opportunity for students to explore potential subjects, with dedicated discovery lessons and informative sessions. Building on the insights gained from Year 10 students, this initiative ensured informed decisions about their academic pathways. Student leadership opportunities with the election of class captains: these dedicated individuals, acting as liaisons between their peers and teachers, bringing innovative ideas to enhance the school community, fostering a positive and inclusive environment. Sports Day and Cas Day were brimming with excitement, thanks to the efforts of the PE Department and Mrs. Bourn. Amidst the festivities, students were introduced to the Duke of Edinburgh program, as they prepare to embark on this journey in Year 10.

Acknowledging the diverse talents within the student body, congratulations were in order for Zunaira, Jude, and Nidhi for their participation in Ms. Simon's annual literary soiree Likewise, Alyaziah's selection to represent the UAE in athletics with great success. In the academic arena, students demonstrated their prowess in mathematics, as Rayan, Hamzah, Trent, and Omar represented the school with distinction in the Dubai Math Superleague, pushing their limits and showcasing their mathematical talents. The school community came together to celebrate the arts with a mesmerizing production of "Blood Brothers " Additionally, participation in U16 DASSA, World Book Day, and BSME underscored the school's commitment to holistic development, leaving students with cherished memories and a sense of achievement.

YEAR 10

Year 10 has been a year of growth, exploration, and unforgettable experiences as we transitioned into KS4. From diving headfirst into our option courses to showcasing our talents on stage in the captivating Blood Brothers production, we've embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and determination. Our competitive spirit shone bright on Sports Day, where we cheered each other on with passion and camaraderie. Many of us embarked on the rigorous journey of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award, pushing our limits and discovering our inner strengths along the way.

Our horizons expanded beyond the classroom with captivating international trips to Japan and Kenya, where we immersed ourselves in diverse cultures and forged lifelong memories. And who could forget our exhilarating participation in the BSME games in Bahrain, where we proudly represented our school and showcased our athletic prowess on a global stage.

But it wasn't all about competitions and challenges; we also showcased our creativity and innovation at the Festive Market, sharing our innovative ideas with the world. The Literary Soiree and World Book Day allowed us to express our love for literature in unique and exciting ways, dressing up as our favourite book characters and given a platform to read out their short stories.

As we look ahead to Year 11, we're filled with anticipation and excitement for the journey that lies ahead. With our eyes set on the IGCSE exams, we're ready to build on our successes and continue our academic journey with passion, dedication, and a thirst for knowledge. Here's to the Class of Year 10, a group of resilient, ambitious, and unstoppable individuals destined for greatness.

YEAR 11

Term 1 saw our students starting year two of their IGCSE journey. We came back to the news of our Year 10 early entry maths students all achieving A*’s with three students achieving 197, 199 and 200 out of 200 respectively. Hussain Aman achieved a world’s highest 200/200 A monumental achievement which has led to him receiving a special award from Pearson Edexcel. All of our Year 11 Students have come back to school with a renewed focus ready to take on this extremely challenging year. Students have faced a plethora of assessments to prepare them for the external exams. As well as the academics we have had a lot going on with the wider curriculum with the return for another year of our extensive CCA programme. We have had many key days, such as National Day, Well-being festival and the walkathon for Gaza. Term 1 has also seen the launch of the Year 11 events committee. This is a student led initiative where they brainstorm ideas for events they would like to run throughout the year. Students are responsible for planning, budgeting and delivering the event. The first event planned was a neon themed Freakfest where students were in fancy dress enjoying an array of games and activities planned by the events committee. The first event was a resounding success.

As students came back from the winter break, it was straight into the Mock Exams. The students got their first taste of a full exam cycle, this was an extremely difficult experience for the students but one that was highly beneficial and preparing them for the external exams to come We also had the results day from our second Early Entry students which were record breaking. All 23 students achieved an A* with 17 students achieving the highest possible grade (Grade 9). A special mention to Mohsin Kanji who scored 196/200 in the exam, an exceptional score given the difficulty of the exam. Students had a Mock Exam results day. This was a run through of what the real day would be like to give the students a flavour of what a results day feels like. There were also school events such as International Day and the Motiongate trip which allowed students to relax from the rigour of Year 11 and exams. Term 2 also saw the beginning of the Holy month of Ramadan, this came with the events committee hosting of the first ever Year 11 Iftar, a fantastic event which brought the Year 11 community together As term 2 came to a close the students looked ahead to their spring ‘break’ which for them was an important time for exam preparation and also working with teachers in school with extra sessions preparing for the upcoming exams. The students have made great strides in Term 2, then moving to the all-important term 3, this is the culmination of years of hard work and we look forward to the students having the opportunity to showcase all of their hard work in the exams.

IB

The Year 12s made a phenomenal transition into their first year of IB. They were welcomed back into a new part of the school joining the Year 13 cohort into the IB Hub, equipped with everything they need to get through the year – including a social area, personal study spaces, meeting rooms, and more. We saw the rise of competition soon after, with the ensuing of spirited and creative campaigning for the positions of Head Girl and Head Boy— which were ultimately claimed by Jana Dewedar and Asad Reza. We would like to thank Mimi Hassan and Yousef AlSaudi, who created a lasting legacy by introducing the newly formed, determined Student Leadership Team Many students across the year group worked relentlessly to organise and contribute to a variety of initiatives. One of these events was the extremely memorable TEDx Youth event, featuring guest speakers as well as TED talks from our very own students. The Literary Soiree, too, provided an evening of insight and entertainment as students demonstrated their talents in writing and music Each term ended with an exciting rewards day trip: Motiongate. There is no doubt that through all this, students bonded immensely; we saw this especially during pyjama evening & Freak Fest!

Another memorable initiative was the psychology mentoring programme, where a group of enthusiastic IB1s used their experience to personally mentor and tutor Year 11 GCSE psychology students, helping them achieve their potential and enhance both their knowledge and passion for the subject.

Speaking of passion, it was remarkable to see the amount of students who joined the university societies. Within these societies, students developed both professionally and personally in terms of skills, knowledge and interest. An example of this was the fantastic CPR, First aid, and AED course undertaken by the Medical and Psychology societies Students also made imperative progress towards the next steps of their futures with the many university fairs. We saw university representatives from all over the world take the time to visit and inform us about their campuses. This, alongside several presentations pertaining to university applications, personal statements, as well as a financial literacy course has provided the year group with a solid foundation for the next steps of their lives. Progress was also made on the core components of the IB, particularly the Diploma Programme, with days such as CAS launch day and Extended Essay writing day. We can’t forget, of course, the international trips that were truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences for all those who attended. All in all, the 2023-2024 cohort of Year 12s and Year 13s have made incredible progress both academically and personally, and are ready to take the next steps towards what will surely be extremely successful futures, for each and every one of them. Good luck in your end of year examinations and summer programmes.

"Language learning at DIS has been quite a rewarding experience I have been a student at DIS for 12 years and learning French here for 8 years and I can honestly say that there is no other place I would choose to learn a language I have found that DIS provides us with many resources to help us improve our understanding and performance of the language we choose My experience with learning French with Ms Asma has been wonderful, I find that her methods of explaining verbs and tenses are great and her displays around her classroom are really helpful when we struggle to remember certain things "

Performing Arts

This year marks an extraordinary triumph for the Performing Arts Department at Deira International School! With a surge in enrollment for our GCSE and IB programs, the addition of the IB Music course, and the invaluable collaboration with West End Stages, where professional performers ignited the passion for musical theatre in our Year 8 students, the department has witnessed remarkable growth and achievement

From the vibrant creativity of Year 7 to the polished performances of IB, the journey through our curriculum has been marked by exceptional practical work, development of theoretical understanding and unwavering enthusiasm across all year groups. Our commitment to fostering a love for the performing arts extends beyond the classroom, with an array of co-curricular activities and events The House Music competition saw record participation, while our student-led bands, choirs, and DiS Dance Company showcased immense talent and dedication. Students even took the stage to present their work, including songs, scripts and their own original plays at our Performing Arts Showcase in June, captivating audiences with their ingenuity and flair.

" During this year, I learned to be more collaborative and creative I really have to thank my teacher Mrs Bourn, because without her support I wouldn't be comfortable enough to act in front of an audience "

Aldoori - Year 7

"This year, music and drama have been the vibrant colors on the canvas of my life, painting melodies of joy and drama of discovery "

As we reflect on the year gone by, we celebrate not only the outstanding achievements but also the indelible impact of the performing arts in shaping the lives and passions of our students. We stand proud of their accomplishments and eagerly anticipate the boundless possibilities that lie ahead

Psychology

It has been a very busy year for our Psychology department with several amazing key events. We say hello and goodbye to a number of staff and students including our fabulous year 13’s who have successfully closed their chapter with us in IB Psychology. We say goodbye to an absolute gem, Mrs Quinton, who welcomes beautiful twins and welcome Mr Shakoor with his first son and Mrs Mohyuddin’s baby daughter.

Our Year 10’s successfully conducted their first piece of psychological research to determine whether there is a correlation between height and sporting ability. The IB1s mentoring scheme has been a success this year, with the IB1 students supporting Year 11 throughout the year.

Finally, we would like to wish the best for our IB2’s this summer who leave us to pursue universities all over the world.

"Psychology at DIS, at both GCSE and IB levels, has been a fantastic and enriching experience

Throughout my studies, I've had the opportunity to delve deeply into the nuances of the human brain and behaviour, as well as sharpen my skills as a researcher, which has been both fascinating and enlightening

The wide range of topics – covered by my amazing teachers – has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the field I've been given immense support that has done nothing less than encourage me to succeed Overall, I am so glad to have taken this subject, and I am more passionate about it than ever before "

Science

Science has had an excellent year with lots of opportunities for students to develop their practical skills. With lots of investment in new equipment more students can get hands on in the science labs. We had a successful National Day Science event in which students were asked to design their vision for the ‘City of Wisdom’. The city that will be constructed on Mars and is the vision of the 2117 UAE Mars Mission. Staying on the space theme some of our IB students were accepted to take part in the NASA’s Human Exploration Rover Challenge which only accepts 72 schools worldwide. The DIS team worked extremely hard to become the only school in the Middle East to be allowed to enter this competition. They even got to catch up with a real astronaut, Sultan Al Nayadi! In February, many of our students participated in our first Periodic Table Day treasure hunt – finding clues and answering questions all about elements and the Periodic Table. And if that wasn’t enough some teachers were treated to delicious cell cakes from our creative year 7 students who were learning all about cell biology! Finally, the Medical Society students had the opportunity to get hands-on experience by completing a first aid course

Visual Arts

To our budding artists, it’s been an honour to be your teachers this year We are captivated by the artistic brilliance that has graced our corridors and art rooms. From the first strokes in year 7 to the final masterpieces in year 13, your journey has been a testament to your passion, dedication, and boundless creativity. As we bid farewell to our graduating art students, we wish you all the best and we hope your creative spirits continue to flourish. Your artwork will inspire future artists at school, and we will celebrate your artistic achievements and acknowledge the profound impact they have had on our school community.

Embark on your next canvas with courage, for the masterpiece of your life is a composition only you can create.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth development programme which equips young people for life and is run in over 140 countries across the globe. It aims to empower participants to develop skills, get physically active, give back to their communities and experience adventure on a new level. It encourages our students to stretch beyond comfort zones, push towards personal limits and it recognises their achievements consistently.

Taking on the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others. Participants are invited to select and design their own programme of activities, to set their own goals and to challenge themselves to achieve their aims over a period of several months.

Participating in the DofE International Award at DIS provides several benefits for our students. It helps to develop important life skills (leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, communication). It can enhance their physical and mental well-being as they engage in physical activities and outdoor adventures. Additionally, while working towards their Goals in Skill (music, chess, programming, craft), Physical (sport, exercise, gym) and Service (volunteering, coaching, tutoring, community support), confidence, self-esteem and resilience is built as they face challenges and overcome obstacles

Physical Skill Service DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Our main obstacle this year has undoubtedly been the rain! Bronze and Silver Adventurous Journeys were rescheduled numerous times due to adverse weather conditions. Despite this, all Bronze and Silver participants have successfully met the AJ Expectations. They had to be engaged in purposeful activity (trekking) for over six hours for two/three consecutive days – traversing up and down rocky mountains, through wadis and sand dunes, as well as camping overnight in these challenging environments It was surprisingly cold at night, but campfires, marshmallows and great company warmed us all. Students are responsible for carrying all equipment, planning and cooking meals, writing route cards and following map coordinates to find their way The AJ certainly tested the resolve and resilience of us all, and yet most claim they enjoyed the experience!

Activities that our students have developed this year have been varied and include: tennis, karate, horseriding (Physical), ice-skating, ukulele, sign language (Skill) and gardening, cat fostering, coaching (Service) Many other interests taken on by our students can be seen in the photos below

We look forward to the DIS Awards Night held later in the term, when students, who have completed Bronze (Year 10) and Silver (IB1 and IB2), will receive their DofE Award Certificate and badge The Award not only contributes significantly to the DIS CASport but is accredited internationally when applying to university, college or employment We are looking forward to launching the Award in Year 9!

Forget textbooks – Year 10, 11, and IB1 students traded classrooms for a hands-on expedition to Kenya with Camps International! This wasn't your average vacation This was about pushing boundaries, building on learner attributes, and gaining life-changing skills

From the bustling heart of a Maasai tribe to the serenity of a mountain hike, our intrepid explorers embraced every challenge. They swapped textbooks for hiking boots, administering medicine, and set a new record for de-worming goats (you read that right!). Their creative sides flourished, painting classrooms, building a much-needed school ramp, and even crafting bricks for future projects But it wasn't all work and no play Games, laughter, and a legendary football match with the local students solidified newfound friendships

Beyond the villages, nature awaited Students learned the art of survival, building shelters and mastering the art of fire-starting under the vast African sky A visit to the Maasai tribe offered a glimpse into a fascinating culture, while learning to make paper from elephant dung (yes, really!) with the local women's group fostered a unique connection. The trip culminated in a heartstopping safari, a perfect opportunity to reflect on the whirlwind of experiences

This wasn't just a trip; it was a transformation Students honed communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in a realworld setting They developed a deeper appreciation for different cultures and the importance of giving back. And, of course, they had a blast along the way!

A huge shout-out to the DIS community for all the resources and equipment donated Your generosity truly made a difference in the lives of those we met in Kenya So, next time you see a Year 10, 11, or IB1 student, ask them about their Kenyan adventure They might just show you a picture of a perfectly de-wormed goat or a unique bracelet or sing you the local song JAMBO! Jambo Bwana

STUDENT LEADERSHIP tEAM FOR 2023

The Student Leadership Team is the core of leadership at DIS, which aims to implement strategies that better student engagement and enhance the sense of community around school. With the primary focus of improving the quality of the learning environment, the team works with school leaders to ensure that multiple aspects within the framework of the school's development plan is advanced each year

From introducing initiatives around anti-bullying and well-being, to planning and organising events such as National Day and CAS Day, the team has worked on various aspects to generate an ever-lasting impact on the school. Through the creation of a new council – DIS School Council – and the re-launch of societies, our focus this year was to generate opportunities for student growth and development This year has been full of exciting steps forward for the foundation of our school. We are honoured to have been able to create a legacy for the coming student leadership teams to build on.

DIS SCHOOL COUNCIL

The DIS student council is a powerhouse dedicated to amplifying student voices and fostering a vibrant school community. From advocacy to action, the council champions student causes, ensuring their concerns are not just heard, but acted upon Whether its advocating for our students or spearheading service projects that extend a helping hand to the wider community, our council is at the forefront of making a real difference.

We have a relentless drive for progress, constantly brainstorming innovative ways to enhance the school experience and create a closer-knit school community. The school council isn’t just a group – it’s a catalyst for empowerment, a community for students, and leads unforgettable experiences that shape the very fabric of school life.

But its not just about what we do; its about how we do it. Through leadership development initiatives, we cultivate the next generation of trailblazers, empowering students to step into their potential and lead with confidence. In this bustling environment of communication and collaboration, every voice matters, every idea sparks possibility.

WELL-BEINGCOUNCIL

Over the course of the year we ran many initiatives to e wellbeing. A key highlight this year has been "Random ac It included fun activities like compliment day, smiling at instructors and children, affirmation cards for the students, and compliment cards on which students could write a note to a friend Students were encouraged to always be respectful and kind to others by this week-long event

The wellbeing council is an integral part of the DIS community. As a council we are dedicated to enhancing the overall health and wellbeing of our school community whilst developing a school environment that allows people to feel valued and fulfil their true potential. The wellbeing council works with staff, students and parents to achieve this.

One of our biggest projects that we are further developing is the anti-bullying ambassadors where we gave opportunities to the younger years to show their leadership roles and making a positive impact on the school We are further developing this to ensure every year group has a peer they can speak too.

Looking ahead our Wellbeing council aims to expand it’s reach and impact by collaborating with professionals in the field and continuing to support mental health within the school. Building a foundation of wellness, resilience and compassion that will benefit our school.

Our "Neurodiversity week" was another successful initiative. We created educational posters to display throughout the school to raise awareness of the initiative and encourage support and kindness from both staff and kids This was done to empower and encourage students to put their health first and ask for assistance when they needed it.

tHERE IS NO PLANET B

The Sustainability Council represents innovation, collaboration, and diversity. Our main goal is to spread the idea of sustainability and make it happen through our initiatives .Our efforts have not only made an impact within our school community but also much beyond that. Our first project this year focused on instilling the importance of recycling in our Primary students through interactive activities like crafting and planting. Demonstrating the enjoyable aspect of sustainable practices. We’ve also taken our mission to the secondary school through our main project by working together with the highly respected organisation, ‘Liter of Light’ and taking the lead on this project. This initiative not only fosters unity among our students but also garners global recognition for DIS and Al Futtaim in sustainability efforts. Beyond being a Guinness World Record-breaking endeavor, Liter of Lights aims to illuminate the lives of thousands of underprivileged individuals in the Philippines and globally as well Our council serves as a proof to the profound impact a small group of dedicated individuals can have, going beyond limits and creating a lasting impact.

The Design and Engineering Council; Where imagination meets innovation!

Leadership: Kuzey Karci

Our mission is to ignite a passion for design and engineering within our school community, inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers

Our projects and initiatives encompass a wide range of interests and disciplines, from woodworking to 3D printing. Through hands-on experiences and workshops. We empower students to turn their ideas into reality and to address real-world challenges with confidence and ingenuity

This year, students designed a holder for their gaming controllers. After finalizing their sketches and dimensions, students utilised their woodworking abilities to fabricate their products. Moreover, we explored the realm of computer-aided design, creating digital models of real-world objects to be 3D printed. As a council, we also partook in the Guinness World Record-breaking 'Liter of Light' initiative, manufacturing light tubes to be sent to thousands of underprivileged families in the Philippines

Inclusion

Embracing inclusion means celebrating our diversity and ensuring everyone feels valued and respected. At DIS, we stand united in creating a culture where every voice is heard, every perspective is valued, and every individual feels they belong. Our commitment to inclusion extends to recognizing and honoring specific SEND awareness days such as Dyslexia and Down Syndrome Awareness Day.

Through these important dates and the efforts of our Student Inclusion Ambassadors, in educating others on SEND needs, we foster a community where differences are not just accepted but celebrated and everybody belongs.

At DIS, we are proud that we speak many different languages from all over the world! For some of our students, English is a new language for them, so our English Language Learners (ELL) programme provides specialized support to foster language development across the four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. ELL support may include language instruction, cultural integration, differentiated learning materials, wellbeing support and additional tutoring to ensure that students can fully participate and succeed academically in their English-speaking classrooms.

A highlight for our Chinese students this year was celebrating Chinese New Year. With the support from some wonderful parents, students who were involved in decorating our school for the occasion. They also enjoyed putting together a special video for their teachers and peers, teaching them all about the significance of Chinese New Year.

Clinic

School health activities focus on promoting the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of students. These activities include health screenings, nutrition education, physical fitness awareness, vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases, mental health support, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices Incorporating these activities into the school curriculum help students develop healthy habits that will benefit them for a lifetime Collaborating with DHA school health professionals, various programmes were conducted for the health and wellness of our community

Ultimately, the goal of school health activities is to create a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive academically and personally.

Clinical Nutrition Department from Dubai Health conducted a lecture for Emirati students emphasising the importance of a healthy lifestyle and preparing them before attending the National Service

Vision screening is an essential part of a child's overall health and development. By identifying potential vision problems early on, we can prevent long-term issues that may affect a child's learning ability and overall well-being. At school, vision screenings are conducted in collaboration with Dubai Health to ensure that all students have the proper vision needed to succeed in the classroom By prioritising vision screening at school, we ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Blood Drive

“You don’t need to be a Doctor to be a hero, just donate blood.”

Our DIS community were heroes as teachers, parents and students visited our drop-in clinic, provided by the DHA to donate blood We are so proud of our community and student leaders who made this event a huge success as we continue to develop our charity and service work. The Blood drive initiative is a rewarding experience and a great way to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood and saving lives.

Festive Market

National Day

National Day was held on Tuesday 28 November and was themed around ‘Leadership and Vision’, very much aimed at our students and how we can share our Emirati history and lead the UAE into an innovative and prosperous future.

It was a great success and so wonderful to have our DIS community together, with parents on site to mark 52 years of the UAE Most of the day’s success must be credited to our Heritage Heroes and IB Emirati students who planned the Grand Souk and generously supported the external vendors, providing us with an experience of traditional Emirati food, henna, games, and music.

National Day is a celebration of the unification of the seven emirates, led by our founder Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan. This day is a tribute to the leaders and the people who have contributed to the development and success of the United Arab Emirates. We celebrate the unity of the Emirates and the fruit of the determination of our leaders to create a strong, undivided, and cohesive nation Our country has risen from humble beginnings and innovated at an amazing rate. We set no limits on aspiration and we trust our abilities, our potential, and our unity Our Founding Fathers built a nation of unity for the well-being, happiness and flourishing of all.

In the words of Sheikh Zayed: "Wealth is not money or oil. Wealth lies in people Money is of no use if it is not dedicated to serving the people"
