Welcome On behalf of the club, I’d like to welcome the officials, players and supporters of Llantwit Major Football Club to the Marstons Stadium for this Cymru South league match.

I’d also like to welcome our three officials and hope you enjoy the game.

Head to Head We lost 3-0 in the away fixture on Saturday October 9th 2021, it was our first away defeat in 3 matches. We have only met once here losing 1-2 on Saturday March 2nd 2019. The match due in March 2020 was cancelled due to COVID.

Forthcoming fixtures On Good Friday, April 15th we are at home to Port Talbot with a 5.30 pm kick off and then play the away fixture on Easter Monday, the 18th of April with a 2.30 pm kick off.

We complete our season on Saturday April 30th when we are at home to Risca United.

The Reserves are away to Penydarren tomorrow and then play Llanelli here on April 5thand Cwmamman United away on April 9th and Goytre United away on April 16th and Trefelin away on the 23rd.

Tonight’s Visitors Llantwit Major Football Club was formed in 1962. A selection committee selected the team until entry to the South Wales Amateur League 2nd division was gained in 1971. Life Member Gwyn John was appointed as the first team manager. Manager John’s team were promoted to the 1st Division after finishing second in the 1976/77 season. Llantwit consolidated in the division before claiming their first Amateur League title under new manager Alan Foster in the 79/80 season. This was closely followed by their second championship just a year later after retaining the title and adding the Corinthian Cup to achieve the double. This kick started a golden period in the 80’s where the club won another double of league and Corinthian Cup in 83/84. The hat-trick of Corinthian Cups came in the 86/87 season. The club were also runners up in the league on a further two occasions during the decade. The 90’s by contrast was a very mixed period for the club, first relegation in 91/92 under Rob Sherman’s leadership, followed by promotion two years later with Steve Manning at the helm. Fast forward two years and relegation, this time with record appearance holder Pete Lingham as player/manager. However, the club made sure they were in the first division again at the turn of the millennium, the management duo of Kev Pycroft and Phil Clay gaining promotion by winning a comfortable 2nd division title. The club spent the next decade consistently flirting with the league title without ever looking like serious title contenders with Llantwit stalwarts Tim Watts and John Guy providing much needed stability in charge. The club also came runners up in the Corinthian Cup in 2005. John Guy stepped down as manager in 2010 following a decade as manager to move upstairs as Chairman. Guy did this selflessly in order to allow the introduction of fresh ideas into the club from new boss Kevin Rees in partnership with Watts. Rees and Watts introduced flesh blood into the playing staff gaining instant success by lifting the SWFA Senior Cup in 2010-11.

The bedrock of the new players was Darren Robinson who became player-manager along with the irrepressible Watts and Leigh Pratt as player- coach. In his first season (2011/12), the club went onto win the South Wales Amateur League losing only once in the process before securing promotion to the Welsh League Division 3 after beating Sully Sports 4-0 in a play-off final. Following a respectable debut season in Div 3 where the club faded in the final weeks of the season to finish 6th, Robinson stepped down from his managerial duties due to personal reasons. Over the next two seasons Baz Whitelam, Dave Peniket and Phil Clay all contributed to stabilising the club in what became a challenging period with several local players finishing playing for different reasons and the club fighting to retain their Welsh League status. Over the summer months of 2014, the club were quick to act in appointing Karl Lewis as manager, having become available following two highly successful years managing in the Welsh League Reserve and Youth Leagues. Three years on, and only ten league defeats within this period, Lewis has superbly led the club to back-to-back league titles winning the Welsh League Div 3 title in 2016/17 and Welsh League Div 2 title in 2017/18 in the club’s most successful period since forming. The club will now look forward to competing in Welsh League Division 1 and the second tier of the Welsh Football League Domestic Pyramid system for the first time in its history.

After Karl Lewis resigned as manager after a successful season in the Welsh League, Darren Robinson became the new manager to guide Llantwit Major AFC into the next chapter playing Karl Lewis was only gone for a few months and came back to take the club on and finish mid table before the season was curtailed in the 2019-20 season.

Afan Lido 1 Taffs Well 5 The outcome was all but settled in the 55th minute when Lido keeper Aaron Jones was sent off in a 5050 challenge. Lido at this point were 2-1 down but were clawing their way back into the game, once Jones was sent off the game that put paid to our chances of getting a result. We began the game well and created two early chances which went narrowly wide and in the early stages we took the game to Taffs Well. Taffs took the lead on 19 minutes and doubled their lead on 29. Aaron Jones was unlucky, he made a superb double save from close range but the second squirmed away from him and trickled over the line. Rocked by this our defending became poor and a lot of aimless balls were played. We made a double substitution at half time with Owen Williams and Mike McCalmon replacing Josh Webber and Harry Davies. In the early stages of the second half, we again took the game to Taffs and this time it had the desired affect with Liam Griffiths heading in on 51 minutes. However, 4 minutes later came the decisive incident, disappointingly for the spectator it ruined the game. Cai Owens took over from Aaron and he was beaten on 68 and 69 minutes with the fifth goal coming on 80 minutes. By then we had made a further 3 substitutions and played out the game without conceding any more goals.

Llanelli 1 Afan Lido 1 Carlos Indjai equalised in the seventh minute of added on time to secure a vital point. We were behind to a first half penalty given when the ball was driven at Cai Owens and he was adjudged to have handled the ball. Modern rules perhaps but how is he supposed to react quickly enough to get his hands out of the firing line?

With Aaron Jones suspended Paul Holmes deputised in goal for his first game of the season and he can be pleased with his performance. However, he almost gifted Llanelli the lead in the first minute with a poor kick out which went straight to a Llanelli player whose shot went inches wide. Llanelli dominated the early stages helped by some poor distribution by several Lido players. Finally, after 12 minutes Lido created a half chance when Sean Hanbury shot from distance and it landed on the roof of the net. Lido were putting Llanelli under pressure from Cai Owens long throws, Carlos Indjai flicked on one to the far post but Harry Davies was unable to turn the ball in. On the half hour Llanelli went ahead vis the penalty, Paul Holmes guessed correctly and almost made the save, spurred on by this Llanelli surged forward and Paul Holmes made a fine save turning the ball away for a corner. Another Cai Owens throw caused problems for the Llanelli defence but this time there was no one on the far post to convert the chance. Lido replaced Ben Keen with Josh Webber at half time, Sean Hanbury was unlucky when he chipped the keeper but the ball drifted just wide. On 57 minutes he was again unlucky when his goalbound header from a corner was headed off the line. A minute later Carlos Indjai fired in a shot which the Llanelli keeper did well to hold. Lido continued to dominate the game but just couldn’t find an equaliser, A Cai Owens cross was headed goalwards by Carlos Indjai but it could only find the side netting. Into the last 10 minutes and Josh Webber fired just wide having been played in by Carlos Indjai.

After all that pressure Llanelli broke and should have made it 2-0, Paul Holmes did well to parry a shot which rebounded for a Llanelli player who with a gaping goal could only scoop the ball over the bar. It was a costly miss as Lido went back down into the Llanelli area and won a corner which landed at the feet of Carlos Indjai and he hooked the ball in to great celebrations as he secured a vital point.

Undy Athletic 0 Afan Lido 2 A goal in each half saw us successfully claim the three points at Undy Athletic. Lido played with a breeze at their backs in the first half and we tended to overhit a number of passes which ran out for goal kicks.

Also, a number of last ditch tackles and interceptions kept the score sheet blank until we finally broke through with an attack down the left with the ball being crossed to the unmarked Sean Hanbury who had all the time in the world to pick his spot to put us ahead. We were generally the better side but we were unable to find another breakthrough before the interval. Undy found the same problem after the break with a number of promising attacks being thwarted by overhit passes. On 50 minutes Undy were dealt a blow when defender P Clayton was sent off for two yellow cards. Worse was to follow on 59 minutes when another defender C Parry was shown a second yellow leaving Undy with 9 players. Liam Griffiths then added a second for Lido on 63 minutes when a Sean Hanbury pass to the far post found Liam in space. Despite our numerical advantage we weren’t able to add to our score, often taking the wrong option. Undy had their moments but failed miserably in front of goal, missing several gilt edged chances. To their credit they never gave up but Lido saw out the game to earn 3 valuable points in the fight to stay up in Cymru South.

FAW Fair Play in association with the NATIONWIDE BUILDING SOCIETY The FAW is continuing to promote the Fair Play initiative by organising the ‘FAW Fair Play Fortnight’ in partnership with Nationwide Building Society for all National League clubs starting on Friday, 1st April 2022 until Friday 15th April 2022.

The FAW has already organised this for all divisions within the National Leagues in previous seasons, which involved players and match officials wearing the FAW Fair Play patches on their kit, having articles in programmes, PA announcements etc. to raise the profile of this worthwhile initiative, where the winners of each award from the National Leagues receives £1000 prize money to put towards their club.

This season the FAW intend to launch the largest Fair Play initiative ever with all National League clubs taking part, The FAW will provide FAW Fair Play patches as they have done in the past which are temporary stick on patches and we would be grateful if you could stick on your players kits for this round of fixtures.

National Lottery two for one offer Tonight’s match is part of the National Lottery funding offer where two people will be admitted for £5 as long as one of the spectators has a lottery ticket or can show on their phone that they have purchased a ticket. This is part of the National Lottery’s commitment to non-league football and is ongoing until April 15th.

The girls haven’t played since their defeat by Penybont. There are a number of artificial results since the last programme, for instance Bridgend Street have had two wins replaced by two defeats while Aberaman have been given a win at Bridgend Street despite losing the game. We have not played two matches but the opposition were awarded 1-0 wins so the table has a strange look since our last match programme.

Lido Pen Pictures Aaron Jones Represented the Boys Clubs of Wales at all age groups. Played youth football here for a season, also played at Penybont, Cefn Cribbwr, Porthcawl Town Athletic and Cornelly United. Re-signed for us in January 2022 from Cefn Cribbwr Steve Morris Steve signed for the club ahead of the 2019-20 season. Australian by birth he spent 18 months playing in Spain before being a squad member for Penybont in their undefeated season.

Harry Davies Signed from Swansea University in September 2020. Also played for Llantwit Major, Garw and Penybont Ioan Evans Signed in September 2020 from Cardiff Met; has also played for AFC Llwydcoed.

Taylor Evans Youngster who played for our under 16’s Academy side and has bags of potential. Made his senior debut in the League Cup tie against Panteg in August 2017. Selected for the Welsh Colleges and Schools sides for the last couple of seasons. Signed for Briton Ferry in 2018-19.

Re-signed for the club in June 2020.

Rory Healey Rory joined us on loan ahead of the transfer window from Briton Ferry/Llansawel.

Connor Harris Played a handful of games in the Welsh Premier League before leaving. Played for a number of local sides before re-signing in July 2021 from Port Talbot.

Toby Link-Jones Toby played for our youth side winning caps for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales. Has played a number of first team matches before football was suspended. A promising centre back.

Luke McDonald Youth player who was involved with the first team before football was suspended. Has represented the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales.

Liam Griffiths Signed from Goytre United in August 2021. Scored on his debut against Briton Ferry. Previous clubs include Pontardawe Town and Carmarthen Town.

Josh Webber Signed in 2014, previous clubs include Pontardawe and Neath. In 2014-15 Josh represented the Wales under 18’s semi-professional side against the Republic of Ireland. He has also represented the Boys Clubs of Wales.

Cai Owens Cai signed for us ahead of the 2015-16 season. Previous clubs include Swansea City and Morriston. Made the right back position his own but left towards the end of 2016-17 to play for Goytre United. Cai re-signed for the club ahead of the 2017-18 season. He is a former Swansea schools representative and captained the Boys Clubs of Wales in 2015-16 in an International tournament in Germany. Re-signed from Ynystawe Athletic in June 2020. Resigned for Ynystawe in November 2021 but returned in January 2022.

Pen Pictures (Cont) Sean Hanbury Sean progressed through the junior sides within the club before joining Swansea City Academy.

Was released at the end of the 2016-17 season and signed for the club in August 2017. Made his debut off the bench at Caerau Ely, made 24 starts scoring 5 goals. Signed for WPL Carmarthen Town in June 2018 before re-signing in June 2019. Left in August 2020 for Trefelin but re-signed again in January 2022.

Ben Keen Ben joined us in September 2020 signing from Penybont. Also played for Porthcawl. Signed for Llantwit Major in August 2021 before re-signing in January 2022.

Matthew Beynon Played for the club as a youngster, Has played for a number of local clubs before re-signing in January 2022 Sam Baker Signed in January 2022 from Briton Ferry Llansawel for whom he played for many seasons.

Also played for Tata Steel, Giants Grave, Port Talbot and Ton Pentre. .

Carlos Indjai Carlos signed for the club ahead of the 2015-16 season from Llantwit Major, also played for Dinas Powys. Is a Wales LD International. Although a winger, he filled in with great success as a full back towards the end of 2017-18 and is now operating as a centre back. Signed for then Welsh Premier Llanelli in July 2018 before re-signing for us in December 2018. Left and joined Newport City before re-signing for the club in January 2022.

Signed during the 2016-17 season playing a handful of games before joining Carmarthen Town. Re-signed for the club in January 2020. Left July 2020 before re-signing in January 2022
