Welcome On behalf of the club I’d like to welcome the officials, players and supporters of Briton Ferry/Llansawel Football Club to the Marstons Stadium for this Cymru South league match.

I’d also like to welcome our three officials and hope you enjoy the game.

Head to Head Last time we met here was on September 20th 2019 when we lost 0-3. The return at the Old Road was on January 17th 2020 and we lost 3-4 having led with goals from Chris Jones (2) and Lewis Holmes. Those who were there will remember the incident which cost us the game when Liam McCreesh was fouled in the area but the referee gave him a red card for diving!.

Lewis Ridd Congratulations to former Lido junior player Lewis Ridd who has been selected for the Wales under 19 squad to play in a mini tournament in Croatia early next month. Lewis is currently playing at Ipswich Town.

Gavin McCarthy Congratulations to Gavin has recently been appointed to manage our reserve side.

Briton Ferry Llansawel Briton Ferry/Llansawel was born out of the merger of two clubs, but although our history in our current guise only dates back to 2009 both Briton Ferry and Llansawel Football Clubs respectively both retain a distinguished albeit contrasting history.

Briton Ferry Football Club Briton Ferry Ex-Schoolboys (Founding name) being the elder club were formed in 1925/26 and became members of the Welsh League in the early 1930's. The team was re-named Briton Ferry Athletic A.F.C. in 1926 when playing in the Swansea and District Football League.

Promotion was gained to the second division of the Welsh League in 1932. After the Second World War the Ferry gained promotion to the first division of the Welsh League albeit for one season only.

Despite the Club's mixed fortunes in the 1950's and 1960's it built up a fine sporting tradition and produced three full Welsh Internationals in Roy John, Harold Williams and Carl Harris. In 1987 Mr. Graham Jenkins, now a life president who played for the team between 1951 and 1955 and whose grand-father, Mr. James Taylor, was a founder member of the club became Chairman of the Club and between 1995 and 1997 he under-took the re-building of the clubhouse, dressing rooms, visitor’s lounge and the installation of floodlights.

There is no doubt that the club's fine facilities were a factor when Mr. Carl Harris, the former Leeds United winger and winner of twenty four full Welsh Caps accepted the position of playermanager. The club enjoyed considerable success under Carl's leadership culminating in the team's promotion as runners-up to the new League of Wales. However, the stay in the league was to be a short one when relegation followed at the end of the 1993-94 season.

Although the club preserved its status has one of the most established teams in the Welsh league by retaining their first division status for many years they were never able to reach the heights achieved in their glory days and a succession of poor seasons culminated in their relegation in 2n 2008/09 to the third division of the Welsh League.

Llansawel Football Club Comparative youngsters compared to their counterparts at the Old Road, Llansawel Football Club were only formed in 1985 by a group of fathers whose children were playing junior football for Giant's Grave Boys Club. Over a period of 20 years since they entered the then old Division Five of the Neath and District Senior League the club successfully rose through the ranks culminating in 2005/06 by becoming the first team in the 75 year history of the Neath League to complete the treble twice.

2005/2006 proved to be a landmark season which saw the club win 6 trophies including the Premier League, Premier Cup, Open Cup, Borough Cup, Rose Bowl and Neath League 75th Anniversary Trophy. A great season was capped with Llansawel gaining promotion into the Welsh Football League. Llansawel spent three seasons in the Welsh League before the decision was made to amalgamate with Briton Ferry FC. The Merger After extensive discussions in the summer of 2009 it was agreed that Briton Ferry and Llansawel Football Clubs would merge to form Briton Ferry Llansawel AFC. It has been evident during the past few years that everyone associated with the new club is determined to grasp the opportunities this merger provides and maximize its potential ensuring that the new infrastructure provides a foundation for controlled growth ensuring a bright future for everyone associated with Briton Ferry Llansawel AFC.

Briton Ferry/Llansawel (Cont) The 2011/2012 season proved to be the new club’s most successful season with both senior teams having successful campaigns. The first team guided by Carl Shaw with Martin Parker and Paul Evans finished third in the league gaining promotion to the Welsh League Second Division. Our Reserve team managed by Dean Tristram and Martin Williams added to the success by winning the clubs first trophy since the merger when they won the Reserve League Cup which followed up their runners up position in the league.

2012/2013 was an exciting season both on and off the field with both our senior teams looking to capitalise on the success they enjoyed the previous season. Our commitment to develop the Old Road ground continues with major developments including a brand new bar, new official and away team changing rooms being at the forefront of recent improvements. Since the merger great strides have been taken to lay the foundation for even greater success on and off the field.

2013/2014 The Club had an excellent first season in Division 1 finishing in the top half while also continuing to invest in the infrastructure with our development teams, ladies all finishing in the top three of their leagues.

2015/2016 A difficult season saw the reds finish four from bottom in Division One on joint points with four teams who finished with better goal difference above them. With Port Talbot failing their domestic licence the club were subsequently relegated by the FAW. A turbulent summer has seen many new faces in the squad along with changes in the management set up. Off the field a new 175 seater grandstand, disabled bay, press area and 13 man dugouts have seen the club further improve the Old Road for the clubs return to Division One. Our reserve team will be used this season as a platform for the development for some of our under 19’s who will be looking to make the move into senior football, with our under 19’s also competing in the Youth Division West. Our Ladies will compete for the first time in the Welsh Women’s Premier League.

2016/2017 It was a case of mission accomplished for our first team with a swift return to Tier 2 of Welsh Football finishing runners up to unbeaten league champions Llanelli. Manager Carl Shaw will be hoping to consolidate again in the division while the club will also strive to continue to improve facilities at the Old Road to achieve the Tier 2 license for season 18/19. Our development team will see a number of last seasons under 19’s make the step up into senior football under the watchful eye of Layton Thomas and will provide a platform for a mix of first team fringe players and youth. They will look to go one better this season after again finishing runners up in both league and cup. Our youth team will be competing in the West Wales Youth League after manager Mike Rutherford held a number of successful trials to form his squad, the drop down from Welsh League is part of his long term vision to see a sustainable youth system at the Old Road.

Our ladies team put up a brave fight in their first season in the Welsh Women’s Premier League and despite an excellent late run of results they were relegated. This season they will be part of the new Tier 2 Women’s League and will be highly competitive with the aim to return to the WWPL. 2017/2018 It was mission accomplished as Manager Carl Shaw secured our place in Welsh League Division One with several games to spare. It was a difficult season for our development side who found themselves finishing at the foot of the table after four teams withdrew late in the season. Our youth and ladies’ teams both proved too strong for their respective leagues with both teams being crowned champions of their respective divisions.

Our youth team will be competing in the Welsh Youth League in 2018/19 after manager Mike Rutherford lead them to the West Wales Youth League title. Our ladies clinched an immediate return to the Women‘s Welsh Premier League after a clinching the league title on the last day of the season away to Barry Town. Our ladies reserves went from strength to strength after a very good season providing much needed support for the first team. Our Ladies youth team showed there is plenty of future reds to make the step up after comfortably clinching the title. inning their league.

2018/2019 Confirmation of our Tier 2 license this Summer was reward for all the hard work carried out over the last few years by everyone at the club. Continued development on and off the field this Summer will hopefully help us consolidate our position in Division One prior to the restructure of Welsh League in 2019/20. It’s fitting that all the first team players who finished last season signed on for the new campaign. Carl Shaw also added some significant new signings with the aim to finish as high up the league table as possible. Carl retained the services of both Ray Pennock (Assistant Manager) and Gary Elsey (Goalkeeping coach) but added Mark Napieralla (First Team Coach) and Sara Gray (Sports Therapist) to last year’s management team. Our Development Team will be managed by Jonathan Davies and he will be assisted by Ross Howells. Last season’s West Wales youth champions again managed by Mike Rutherford will make their debut in the Welsh Youth league. Ross Norgrove, Simon Powell and Jack Midwinter will once again take charge of Briton Ferry Llansawel Ladies as they make an immediate return to the Women’s Welsh Premier League after winning promotion after being relegated in 2017. Our ladies reserve team will be managed by Richard Churchill, Tom Knight, Tasha Trottman. Finally our ladies youth team will be managed by Rob Brown and Alan Topper.

2019/2020 This year sees the club take part in the inaugural season for the FAW JD Cymru South under the reigns of manager Carl Shaw, assisted by Ray Pennock, Mark Napierella, Ian Hillier and Gareth Jones. Shaw has also added experienced goalkeeper coach Leigh David to his staff and Sports Therapist Sara Gray continues her role. Major signings in Cwmamman Utd playmaker Colin Harris and last seasons Welsh League Division One top scorer Mark Jones along with young wide man Declan Horgan-Evans from Pontardawe and ex-Afan Lido winger Craig Jones sees quality new faces coupled with retaining the majority of last seasons squad bodes well for the season ahead. Our Development squad had a superb season last year directed by Jonathan Davies but a major accident for Bushy sees him sit out the start of the campaign and Wyn Evans takes on the caretaker role aided by Michael Walsh until Joni is back in the dugout, everyone at the club wishes him well in his recovery. Our Ladies section consolidated themselves in the WWPL last season and will be looking again to compete well in both the league and cup with their young squad under the guidance of Ross Norgrove, Simon Powell and Jack Midwinter. The Ladies section continues to grow with their Development squad and junior section and the majority of last seasons Under 16s squad have now made the step up to senior football. Our Youth team sees Daniel Taylor and Josh Williams in charge of the 19s and a newly formed WWYL team has been formed with Garry Fishlock taking control of the team. Mike Rutherford heads our newly formed Youth Development programme with ages from 10s right through to 18s with more news to follow soon after months of work behind the scenes.

2020/21 This season will go on record for being like no other due to the global pandemic of Covid-19.

Despite this the club has continued its theme of improvement year on year and major appointments have seen Andy Dyer take on the role of club Sporting Director.

First team manager Carl Shaw is now entering his tenth year since his appointment and will be looking again to improve on the clubs highest ever finish of third last season in the JD Cymru South since the merger in 2012.

Carl is assisted by Mark Napierella with ex-players Ian Hiller and Gareth Jones, with new goalkeeper coach Ashley Roberts joining Shaw's coaching team.

Another new recruitment is Henry Fensome as Head Sports Therapist from Llanelli after the departure of Sara Gray who has joined Swansea City.

Dyer also oversees the clubs Development programme assisted by Gavin Guy with the team due to compete in the FAW Reserve League.

We are delighted to have been accepted to participate in the Cymru Premier Development League and our Head of Youth Anthony Wright brings a vast amount of experience, he will be assisted by Steve Hutin and Mark Nicholls.

There has also been a fantastic appointment as Head of Coaching with Andy Hill overseeing our Academy set up that now has teams from Under 8’s through to Under 19’s something the club is extremely proud of with ‘Investment in Our Future’ the key focus in the foreseeable future.

Our Ladies section also continues to grow with junior teams, a newly formed Under 19’s as well as a reserve and first team and will be looking for a swift return to the WPWL. Ladies General Manager Ross Norgrove and Simon Powell have both stepped aside and appointed FAW A License candidate Isaac Berry as new first team manager.

Berry has appointed a number of excellent young ambitious staff members and the ladies will be looking for a positive start this season.

Off the field chairman Wyn Evans and the committee have recruited Steve Pockett to the board and the clubs main focus this season is to achieve the Tier 1 License with a number of projects and improvements underway at the Old Road to bring the ground and infrastructure up to the desired level, this includes 300 extra seats, pitch extension work, floodlights upgrade as well as new dugouts with the plan to make the Old Road a ground everyone can be proud of calling home.

Pen Pictures Conah McFenton: Goalkeeper Young goalkeeper signed from Haverfordwest for season 2018/19.Conah has a big reputation at such a young age after already appearing in the Welsh Premier League at Port Talbot after moving there from playing junior league football with Swansea based team Union Rangers. The Swansea-born stopper has capped for the Wales U.18 Academy .The commanding goalkeeper has also played for Llanelli before an excellent season for the league runners up in 2018. A superb first season at the club last year and we’re delighted to have retained his services.

Sam Baker: Defender Returned to the club after a spell at Tata. Sam is a no nonsense player who leaves nothing on the pitch. Converted to full back last season after spending most of his career as a forward .The decision seems to have been heralded by some excellent displays in his new position.

Warren Hudson : Midfield The cultured midfielder returns for his third spell at the club after playing a big part for league cup winners Trefelin last season. The Welsh Futsal International will add composure to the midfield and the club are delighted to welcome him back.

Pen Pictures (Cont) Luke Harris: Defender Cultured centre back who is brave in the tackle and in the air. 29 year old has played most his career in Division One since he was 16 for clubs including Goytre Utd., Haverfordwest, Ammanford and Pontardawe. Been Mr. Consistency since his move to Old Road and is an ever present in central defence.

Cameron Harris: Midfield Brother of centre back Luke, signed from Pontardawe and impressed in pre-season with his superb fitness and work ethic. Can play full back or on the wing will be an excellent addition to the squad.

Rory Healey: Midfield Rory is a no nonsense hard working powerful midfielder who possesses great pace and does not like coming off second best. Comfortable on the ball and a superb engine in the middle of the park. Will always give you 100%, is club captain

Declan Horgan-Evans: Midfield Young left footer signed from Pontardawe in the summer, sure to excite the Old Road faithful with his directness and ability on the left flank.

Steve Davey: Midfield Former Welsh Premier player with Neath. Steve has lightening pace with the skill to cause problems to the most experienced defenders. Quality delivery from wide plus instinctive finishing ability means he is regularly on the scoresheet.

Colin Harris: Midfield A big signing at the Old Road, was one of the best players in the Welsh League last season.

Colin loves to orchestrate the midfield and he also has an eye for goal. Will be one to excite the fans and he delivers a superb set piece.

Joe Hunt: Forward Young left footed player who can play full back or on the wing. Formerly with Merthyr Tydfil, will be a valuable addition to the squad

Gareth Jones: Forward Gareth is a big and strong centre forward who is excellent at leading the line.

All time leading goalscorer for the club in the Welsh League who is strong in the air with great feet and on his day is a handful for the most experienced defender

Tyler Brock: Forward Tyler returns on loan from Haverfordwest after making the move to Bridge Meadow from the Old Road in the summer. Can play on either wing or up top and will be looking to return to his best form with the Reds.

Mark Jones: Forward A huge statement from the Reds with the summer signing from Afan Lido of this prolific forward.

A regular scorer in the Welsh Premier League and was last season’s top scorer despite only playing half a season.

The Reserves continued their good start with a hard fought win at Briton Ferry. Pat Finneral opened the scoring just before half time when he chested home a great cross from Luke McDonald. The Ferry took the lead in the second half thanks to two defensive errors but Jordan Edwards levelled on the hour when his close range shot was helped in by a defender. Harry Davies restored the lead with a header from a corner on 67 minutes. We had several chances to improve the score but failed to convert them. Next up is a home game with Cwmamman United on Saturday (2.30)

Afan Lido 0 Ammanford 1 We went behind in the second minute for what proved to be the only goal of the game. It followed a goalmouth scramble resulting in Osian Dillon scoring. Lido won a corner which was headed clear but there were glimpses of Lido getting into the game. Good work from Jordan Edwards down the right who crossed and set up Ioan Evans but he could only fire wide. Cai Owens then headed a free kick over the bar before Ammanford responded with a good run by Leon Britton who weaved his way past several would be tacklers but instead of shooting he passed the ball to the left and the incoming cross was too long. Lido then attacked down their left with a deep cross which was cleared but only to a Lido player with another cross being headed over by Jordan Edwards. Lido’s attack was working well but so was the Ammanford defence. Ammanford then took a quick free kick and won a second on the edge of the area but Lee Trundle’s effort went over the bar. In a repeat Ammanford again won a free kick on the edge of the area but this was cleared by the Lido who then quickly attacked with Ben Kenn shooting at the keeper from just outside the area The ball was then played wide to Jay Thomas who with a smart turn on the edge of the box got his shot away and it was parried by the Ammanford keeper. Referee Ben Williams then booked Cai Owens for a foul on the edge of the area with the free kick again ending up over the bar. Worse was to follow for the Lido when Lewis Butler was booked for another edge of the area foul. This time the free kick hit the wall and was cleared. Jordan Edwards then made ground down the right and his cross just eluded Ioan Evans in the centre. A spell of sustained pressure from the Lido as they continued to search for the equaliser with a Ioan Evans cross met by Jordan Edwards but his shot was blocked and cleared before the ball went out for an Ammanford goal kick. Lido started the second half on the attack but Ioan Evans could only shoot wide. Lido took a quick free kick but lost the ball, Ammanford attacked down their right but Connor Harris did well to make a clean tackle in the area and clear the ball. Jay Thomas went close for the Lido who continued to press for the equaliser. The game quickly changed with Ammanford piling on the pressure with a couple of corners but Lido defended them well. On 67 minutes Ioan Evans leapt at the back post and the Ammanford keeper made a great point blank save. With Lido pressing looking for the equaliser once again the ref made a big decision in sending Jordan Edwards off for a second yellow for hand ball. With 10 minutes remaining Patrick Finneral was felled in the penalty area but Jay Thomas signalled which way the ball was going and the Ammanford keeper made an easy save diving to his right. Then the ball appeared to be cleared of the line as the 10 men pushed forward. Disappointingly Jackson Hall was then sent off with minutes to go for a reckless challenge on an Ammanford player. Even with 9 men Lido pushed forward in search of the equaliser but sadly it wasn’t forthcoming

Lido Pen Pictures Steffan Rogers Signed for the club in July 2021 from Ynysygerwn. Vastly experienced keeper who has played for several Welsh League clubs.

Cai Owens Cai signed for us ahead of the 2015-16 season. Previous clubs include Swansea City and Morriston. Made the right back position his own but left towards the end of 2016-17 to play for Goytre United. Cai re-signed for the club ahead of the 2017-18 season. He is a former Swansea schools representative and captained the Boys Clubs of Wales in 2015-16 in an International tournament in Germany. Re-signed from Ynystawe Athletic in June 2020.

Steve Morris Steve signed for the club ahead of the 2019-20 season. Australian by birth he spent 18 months playing in Spain before being a squad member for Penybont in their undefeated season.

Ben Burns Ben signed in October 2020 from Caldicot Town. Has also played for Goytre and Caerau Ely. Lewis Butler Lewis signed in August 2020 from Pencoed Athletic.

Ioan Clatworthy Played for the Boys Clubs of Wales at several age groups representing Cefn Cribbwr. Played for the club’s youth side last season and signed from Llantwit Major in July 2020. Also plays futsal for Inter Cardiff.

Harry Davies Signed from Swansea University in September 2020. Also played for Llantwit Major, Garw and Penybont Ioan Evans Signed in September 2020 from Cardiff Met; has also played for AFC Llwydcoed.

Taylor Evans Youngster who played for our under 16’s Academy side and has bags of potential. Made his senior debut in the League Cup tie against Panteg in August 2017. Selected for the Welsh Colleges and Schools sides for the last couple of seasons. Signed for Briton Ferry in 2018-19.

Re-signed for the club in June 2020.

Patrick Finneral Joined us in January 2019 from Port Talbot. Played a number of youth matches scoring 6 goals and made his full debut against Pontypridd in March 2019. A pacey winger.

Jackson Hall Played half a dozen games in the Welsh Premier league before leaving. Resigned in Jully 2021 from Port Talbot.

John Hall Signed in Jully 2021 from Port Talbot, scored on his league debut at Risca United.

Pen Pictures (Cont) Lewis Holder Lewis signed in October 2020 joining us from AFC Llwydcoed. Has also played for Ton Pentre and Aberdare.

Harry Jenkins Harry joined us in July 2020 signing from Porthcawl Town Athletic. Also played for Briton Ferry and Exeter University.

Ben Keen Ben joined us in September 2020 signing from Penybont. Also played for Porthcawl.

Toby Link-Jones Toby played for our youth side winning caps for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales. Has played a number of first team matches before football was suspended. A promising centre back.

Luke McDonald Youth player who was involved with the first team before football was suspended. Has represented the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales.

Evan Price Evan signed in August 2020 from Pencoed where he played for a number of seasons.

Jay Thomas Jay is a youth team player who has represented the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales. Has caught the eye in a number of pre-season matches.

Ross Daniels Ross signed in July 2021 from Goytre. Has also played for AFC Llwydcoed and Ton Pentre.

Samm Harrison Sam signed in July 2021 from Ynystawe. Has also played for Cwmamman United, West End and Eastleigh.

Jordan Edwards Played for the club in the 2016-17 season. Played for several local clubs before re-signing in July 2021 from Port Talbot.

Connor Harris Played a handful of games in the Welsh Premier League before leaving. Played for a number of local sides before re-signing in July 2021 from Port Talbot.

Jack Underwood Played a couple of games in the Welsh Premier League before leaving and signing for Port Talbot. Resigned from them in July 2021.

Owen Williams Owen signed for the club in 2013 from Tata Steel. Made his full debut at Bala in the Welsh Premier League. Transferred away early in 2017-18 but re-signed in February 2018. Joined Port Talbot in November 2018. A very competitive midfield player. Re-signed for the club in August 2021.
