The staff humbly thanks you for once again flipping open our digital magazine and supporting all of the hard work and love that goes into it! We have had an incredibly busy last few months since our previous issue with lots of changes abound.

As you are currently viewing this issue, you have already seen the biggest of those changes: Our rebranding!

If you are one of these skilled creators and are interested in having a feature within Aetherflow, we have some exciting news! Coming this summer to a viewing device near you, AFM’s very first Community Newsletter will make its debut. This newsletter will be created with the community in mind, featuring many of the various talented individuals throughout XIV's fanbase.

Thanks to our very generous Patrons, and the amazing and talented Lolae Demort, Aetherflow Media has undergone a complete facelift. With changes from the layout and functionality of our website to the new color scheme of the AFM brand itself, we hope you find this new makeover as refreshing as we do whilst you prepare for summer and the upcoming expansion.

These individuals include, but are not limited to, fan artists, cosplayers, in-game decorators, streamers, YouTube video creators, event organizers, and /gpose photographers.

We would also like to take a moment to express our sincerest gratitude to Square Enix. Not only for all of their ongoing support, assistance, and collaboration opportunities for us, but for the creative community as a whole. One of the things our staff is always impressed with is how supportive the XIV team is of the various content creations revolving around the game.

Not only do they acknowledge the various talents within the community, but they also go out of their way to showcase them! Our members were incredibly excited for such an opportunity when we were selected to be featured alongside so many gifted and talented artists in March’s Duty Commenced stream! We greatly appreciate the amazing opportunity and the kind words from its hosts Neha “Ridrina” Nair and Aya “Sicycre” Montoya and look forward to what other hidden gems they feature in future episodes!

Examples of past written work should be provided. Must also be able to provide a list of ideas for content. For example, a list of various topics for one-off pieces or a list of ideas for a recurring column.

Must be able to pitch promotional ideas and be proficient with the various platforms. Applicant should expect to prepare at least 3 posts a week, whether scheduled or manual, published within the Social Media Team. Social Media Marketing experience is appreciated.

For website applications, a list of at least 6 topics should be provided. These lists are just to show that the applicant has ideas for what they would like to contribute.

They do not have to be all inclusive and can be flexible.

FINANCIAL MANAGER

Must be personable and be prepared to interact with the community within the Aetherflow Media server. Should come up with ideas for various Discord contests and challenges, such as screenshot or glamour challenges.

Must be able to efficiently translate written pieces between Japanese and English, making sure to maintain their original meaning, format and tone. The estimated workload for this position would be one article per issue, including any communication with members of the Japanese community.

The financial manager is responsible for the upkeep of the financial spreadsheet, providing quarterly financial statements and approving purchase requests from the staff. The applicant must be proficient with excel, upkeep of financial records, able to provide financial advise, and must be in finance by trade.

It’s definitely an advantage if audio pieces can be translated as well. Translator responsibilities include reading and thoroughly understanding the context of given material, using specialized dictionaries and translation tools and proofreading finished pieces of work. The use of Google Translate does not count!

While this is not a time demanding job, it is an incredibly crucial one and handles confidential information.

For this botany look, we took the Fieldkeep’s Shirt and dyed it Othard Blue and we paired it with Botanist’s Slops and Carbonweave Boots of Gathering in Soot Black. We combined these with the Carbonweave Cap of Gathering in Charcoal Grey and the Fieldkeep’s Corsage.

I’m going to share the miner glamour that I’ve been using for a while now! The Minekeep’s Overalls have been a big favorite of mine and I dyed them Snow White. I paired these with the Songbird Skirt in Soot Black and the Falconer's Boots. For accessories I used the Black Cherry

Blossom Corsage and the Loyal Housemaid’s Wristdresses in Soot Black. You’re going to be the cutest miner to ever exist!

For the second miner glam, you’ll need to have the Mineking’s Work Shirt in Soot Black, Gyuki Leather Chaps in Soot Black, and Minekeep’s Workboots in Slate Gray. Don’t forget the Hempen Bandana in Soot Black to protect your head from the hot rays from the sun! And to finish the look, use a pair of Minekeep’s Work Gloves! You’re ready to start mining in style!

Now, when I was thinking up fishing glams it was pretty hard due to still being a pretty low level on my fisher. I’m working on it! When asking around the Aetherflow office, we came to the decision to make them beach themed, and these are by far my favorite glamours for this piece.

I’ve been using this first glamour as my fishing glam for a while now and I don’t think I’ll change it anytime soon! I paired the Endless Summer Top in my favorite Celeste Green and Spring Bottoms. To finish the look I used the Pearl Roselle Capeline and Endless Summer Sandals.

You can use whatever color you want for the top! Make the look yours!

For the final glamour, I like to call this one Dad on Vacation. I paired again the Endless Summer Top in Pure White with Southern Seas Trunks in Rust Red. For the rest, I used the Hamlet Puller’s Hat in Russet Brown and Summer Sandals. This perfect Dad on Vacation glamour is done! Go out and relax the day away on Costa Del Sol while you fish!

Be it botany, mining, or even fishing-you’ll look great while doing whatever! Stay safe in the sun and have a great summer, Warriors of Light!

LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) Pride month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Greenwich Village. This uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement.

The LGBTQ community has always been a huge part of the FFXIV community. We know representation and having a community matters, that people in the LGBTQ+ are supporting one another worldwide and that equality still is a work in progress.

In major cities across the nation the “day� soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops and concerts, and LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world.

With horrifying acts still happening all over the world, a simple month of celebration just won't cut it. We at Aetherflow Media have a simple message for all the straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer heroes of light: Be you. Be free. Be proud. Love always wins.

Shadowbringers is looming ever closer. You are working hard to cross the final items off of your bucket list before the patch hits.

One of those things is to finish leveling the jobs you want to get to 70. All of them. What better way to level than to simply run your roulettes every day? And I might just happen to have some rather interesting tales from the duty finder to tell you all about!

After raid I decided to jump on my tank to knock out a leveling roulette before finally calling it a day. Loading into the Vault I did not expect much - just the usual, smooth dungeon clear at an adequate speed.

However, something seemed amiss.

AN UNEXPECTED OFF-HEALER

The enemies were dying rather slowly, even though everyone was casting their skills and using their cooldowns. I checked my gear - maybe I would find it broken or outdated for the dungeon, but none of that was the case.

It wasn’t until I noticed a familiar sound which seemed out of place that I ended up understanding what exactly was happening. I double-checked my red mage’s casts to see that he was weaving casts of Vercure in between his Scatters.

A red mage player casting Vercure on the paladin as soon as he dropped below around 80% of his health. I’m not sure if he was unaware of the present healer, did not trust him or just wanted to be a healer with unnecessary long queue times. It was almost cute, and I’m sure the healer enjoyed the change of pace as well, as he started spamming Gravity just a few seconds later.

Don’t get me wrong - I love a player being aware of their class’s potential, helping the healer out when he is struggling to keep up. But sometimes you simply have to trust them to know what they are doing. When the tank is dropping to low health your healer might still have some cooldowns prepared to save the day!

I am sure that we have all been there.

The dungeon run is a bit slower than you wish it would be, the tank maybe stops for five seconds after a group of enemies and somebody in your party is getting a little bit impatient.

to the tank and healer just because you have a need to get out of the instance maybe thirty seconds earlier. If you’re healing and decide to pull more, know that you can handle it - and know that you might stress out the tank a little.

They start running ahead of the group - maybe straight into the next pack of monsters, or to simply pull more because they think that the tank and healer can handle more! Don’t be this guy. You’re nothing more than annoying

Let the tank play at a pace that they are comfortable with. It won’t kill you to get out of the dungeon two or three minutes later than you normally would.

Wiping would just take longer than letting the tank do small pulls.

For some reason unknown to me, in the German localization of Final Fantasy XIV, the spell Esuna is called Medica. I am not sure if this is where this player’s confusion about the skill came from, but it is the only somewhat logical explanation I have come across to date.

THE ESUNA MAGE

It was in Cutter’s Cry where I encountered this player. A white mage around level 40 using a rather unorthodox method to try and keep the party alive.

I noticed my health dropping really low on the first group of enemies, to the point where I started to use some potions I’ve had from running Heaven-on-High just to stay alive.

It turns out this person was spamming Esuna on me - GCD after GCD, barely ever changing to a random Medica or even a Cure II if I was lucky.

Don’t get me wrong - I tried to explain to them, but they did not notice my message in the chat box. It turned out to be a rather exciting time in the dungeon: fearing death on nearly every group, the healer even dying a minute into the final boss fight and having to actively use Max-Potions to stay alive.

They would not use Esuna to cleanse the DoT debuffs on the players - they would instead desperately spam Esuna on the tank in an attempt to keep them alive. It was quite the entertaining dungeon run and definitely a unique experience, spicing up a roulette in a way I never expected.

I’ve got a little question for the healer players I meet out in the roulettes. Is it really enjoyable to stand around, sometimes for maybe a minute or two, doing absolutely nothing? Are you chatting with your FC while your fairy or co-healer does all the work? Do you, maybe, just hate pressing buttons?

standing in a corner, doing nothing and waiting for the tank to drop to half HP so they can finally grace us with their presence and start casting that one healing spell before going back to sending instagram stories to their friends, I have to question why you are doing this to everyone.

When you’re new to healing, your first trial can definitely be overwhelming.

There’s a lot of things to keep track of, and you might rather prefer to stand still for a second while preparing for the next mechanic. This is nothing against these players who are just getting into healing.

Do you hate playing the game? Would it kill you to maybe only get your DoTs on the boss? Could you not just do everyone a favour and speed this whole thing up, so everyone can get their tokens and be done until next Tuesday?

If I'm loading into an Alphascape raid, maybe even a savage version, or the “newest” alliance raid and I see healers

APOCALYPSIS ALLAG: A REVIEW OVER THE TWILIGHT ERA OF THE ALLAGAN EMPIRE When a person chooses confidence that others might consider excessive, those of faith are quick to define it as hubris. “A grand offense against the gods” is the oft-repeated explanation for the demise of the accused. Disregarding the divinely fixed order is a fear of the pious, and the result of said choice is writ in no small number in the scripture and instructive allegory a priest can rely on to guide their flock.

It comes to no surprise that the student can find reference to the Allagan Empire in scripture as a cautionary tale against said decisions to act against the will of the gods. To wit, scripture was the inspiring element that compelled Coinach to seek further knowledge about Allag, at the cost of his appointed role in the Order.

The organization of Garlond Ironworks granted numerous windows into the Third Astral Era’s dark and mysterious veil, their revelations consistent regarding the development of the Allagan Empire. We learn of their rise, their achievements and their conquests across Aldenard and beyond. By the same means, we learn of the origin of magic, and the foundation of our aetherial manipulative practices in our current era.

However, if should one cast their glance to the era of the Empire's fall, they are wont to find material from these very scriptural allegories the Allagan Empire fell due to choosing to challenge the gods.

No tomestone brought to Ironworks hands via adventurers or merchants have given us an understanding of the truth of the fall beyond the words of our prominent theologians and writers of scripture. Such a lack of information leading to this conclusion creates understanding as a false equivalence: can an individual offend the gods and be held accountable by them should

they have never known them in the first place?

We can make the theory that by the time the Empire had fallen in our understanding of ancient history, the Third Umbral Era generations of the magi, as well as the individuals of science, had been succeeded by centuries.

Those that chose to deny the gods were long gone, but their descendants did not know them nor even had the choice to choose between divinity or their intellectual prowess like the age of Xande.

If this is the case, there must have been a cause to the fall that was not a result of divine intervention. The final discourse titled Rebirth By Fire shall cover the knowledge we have of this event.

The jagged fragmen ts of cermet like red talons rending at the open air served as a sort of covering to the well-paved road leading to our destination, Sain t Coinach’s Find.

The path wound downwards in to the shadow of two titans of the land, their bulk commanding the sight of all travelers. Of these dual colossi, we learned that the one to the lef t of the path was the Allagan superstructure named the Crystal Tower, and to the right was the husk of twisted airship coiled in the skeletal remains of the Father of Dragons. This second massive landmark, the remains of both, had gained the name the Keeper of the Lake. The land itself was riven of all but scan t patches of green vegetation and bare trees, a wasteland sealed in crystal the hue of the sky.

As we rode in to the supply route, following the carefully tended path, we wound past more hull wreckage and lifeless stone, un til our path converged with a sheet of molten blue. The crystal had encapsulated the land itself and sealed it in a solid sheet of unmelting ice-like structures. The crunching sounds of breaking glass filled the air as the chocobos padded through the crystal field. Under an archway of blue, we saw it immediately.

Saint Coinach’s Find - was used to acquire the answer sought of Allag's fate. There the truth lay, buried under the rock and ruin of the Battle of Silvertear Falls.

The Sons of Saint Coinach are an order of scholars of Sharlayan and Eorzean in make who have traveled to North Silvertear to set camp and with the mission of unearthing the secrets of the long-fallen Allagan Empire.

Their name is familiar; it was in a previous discourse we mentioned that Saint Coinach is whom we owe for our first knowledge of the existence of the Allagan Empire. In both taking his name as followers of his industry and applying it to the site of their dig, they pursue their goal with single-minded determination. Presently, their deeds hold no small honor to Coinach’s legacy. The order struggles against the land sealed in crystal, along with ancient buried threats of frozen air and aether, natural dangers from the fauna of the wracked landscape,

and the gigant tribe from the Spine that harasses them at every turn, seeking to make the dig site their new home. As if that was not enough, they serve the poor, emulating even further the acts of their forebear by not turning away the needy.

Published achievements that outline the worth of these struggles in the name of anthropogeography include new unheard of magicks, means by which the Allagans fed and lived their lives, and their means of medicine and technology.

However, these can hold a little flame to the most significant feat the Sons gained. It was not long ago that they were involved in a full-scale expedition and investigation into the Crystal Tower that allowed them to delve more deeply into the civilization’s mysteries, and by doing so, gain access to what our primary source of study - the walks of faith - had no means of revealing.

Journal Entry 4 A stern bespeckled man of simple garb and many summers introduced himself as the leader of the Sons of Saint Coinach and welcomed us into the camp of the researchers. I was having trouble convincing Atelloune to remain in the discussion, as fired up as she was to explore the surrounding environs. Choosing instead to assist the Sons in various tasks so she could explore the Silvertear more, I sat down and explained my desire to study and share in my published research the reasoning for the fall of the Allagan Empire.

Upon expression of my intentions, the man who introduced himself as Rammbroes looked away in thought. He appeared as if he was recalling a fond memory, almost mournful.

After apologizing for the long pause, he dismissed himself and returned with a collection of well-worn journals. Within them, he described the contents as a comprehensive chronicle of the expedition of the Nominated Observers of Artifacts Historical, a joint fellowship of the members of

the Sons, the Ironworks and the Students of Baldesion of Sharlayan fame who had led the expedition into the Tower that pierced the heavens.

My hands shook with excitement.

Unlike the contents of the aged tomes and scrolls of the Ossuary, I paged through a record of history in the making.

When I would pause my reading to ask a question, Rammbroes would give me the answer, having been at the fore of the entire investigation.

For most of the remaining bells of the sun, I was deeply entrenched in the writings, finding what I needed to finish my publication.

Rammbroes was silent for most of the time I spoke naught, his expression still wrought in that strange reminiscence. Whatever was described in these pages would not hold merit to the experience itself. And judging from his guise, it did not speak of the costs.

THE EXPEDITION OF NOAH Archon Rammbroes Zasertylsyn as appointed leader of the Sons prepared a thorough survey log and expedition record for the Crystal Tower. Going over the events of the investigation we learn that the sponsor and stakeholder in the project was none other than Cid Garlond, president of the Ironworks. After the XIV Legion had threatened the whole of Eorzea with the reawakened Ultima Weapon, the president took this example alongside the destruction wreaked upon the land by the lesser moon Dalamud to prove that Allagan era technology receives treatment with the utmost caution.

Alongside with this careful consideration of relics of the Allag era, Master Garlond spoke of a desire to access the technology of the Allagan Empire and after thorough analysis, a wish to contain their truths away

from those who would abuse it. Two legions of Garlemald proved to us with their actions that whatever knowledge that remained of the Allag does not belong with the Garleans, and both this wish to analyze and contain prompted Master Garlond to reach out to the Sons and propose the expedition.

The famed Champion of Eorzea and their experience with the Ultima Weapon recorded as their marking achievement, and prearchaeological experience with Allagan relics allowed Master Garlond to trust them with more in-depth research into Allagan technology and thus asked them if they wanted to join their endeavor. Their first obstacle: Entering the tower.

Despite the horrors created by the lesser moon, the Crystal Tower was freed in the aftermath, having remained hidden, buried deep underground since the Empire’s fall. That is why it stood in the distance as if it had never

aged. It remained sealed in the earth since the fall of Allag.

The next hypothesis was that it was a repository of much of the ancients’ wisdom. However, even with its presence revealed, the entrance was guarded by formidable defenses.

band of adventurers and clearing out the maze at the tower’s base, wherewith NOAH could gain access. After the massive construct titled the Labyrinth of the Ancients held no more hostilities, the foot of the tower was accessible.

The security measures had also stood the test of time, preventing all flight and travel into the inner network of the tower. The primary defense, called the Eight Sentinels by the Sons, were four pairings of eight statues of swordsmen that would generate barriers of powerful elemental aetherochemistry to block forward progress.

HOLD FAST THE GATES

Retrieving flawless crystals of each element from beast tribe strongholds, they fashioned keys by which they gained entry into the base of the tower. At this point, the separate factions bound together by common cause took the name NOAH or Nominated Observers of Artifacts Historical.

Upon this pronouncement and assignment of the organization, The Champion of Eorzea received the task of gathering a

Progress was once again stymied, as a gate leading to the central spire of the Crystal Tower, named the Syrcus Tower, was sealed by an unknown technology, and no amount of applied force could assist NOAH in opening the barrier.

Within the survey log, it recorded that it was then in the meeting as they discussed the means to access the Tower, two individuals in strange garb approached the fellowship and introduced themselves as Unei and Doga, sent by the Students of Baldesion to assist in the endeavor.

Added to the roster, they traveled with the fellowship to observe the gate. With all the members present they pondered over

what means they could use to enter through the gate when Doga and Unei stepped forward and seemingly opened the mechanism by will. Having shown no prior understanding of the obstacle before them, the pair of Students received a request for answers by the fellowship. The light was shone on the matter by the surprise entry onto the scene of the exTribunus Laticalvius of the XIV Imperial Legion, Nero tol Scaeva.

An avid researcher of Allagan history, he revealed to the fellowship that Doga and Unei were in fact, clones. This word refers to an Allagan concept of aetherochemical constructs that imitate individuals who once existed, given life through Allagan ingenuity — having learned from his studies that only royal blood could open the gate, the only way that Doga and Unei could have achieved this is having access to royal blood themselves. Their access to the gate was made available via this very blood, being clones of the original “living keys,” the descendants of emperor Xande.

PROVENANCE OF THE THIRD ASTRAL - THE TRUTH OF ALLAG’S END Doga and Unei were encouraged to share with the others what was their goal in assisting NOAH. In order to explain their intentions, they had to start from the beginning, reciting their origin from its genesis in history.

From their memory the reason for their being, which was bound to the history of the Empire itself. The survey log shares that their kind existed long after the zenith of the Empire, where the Crystal Tower stood as a symbol of pride rather than the fearinspiring construct it is today.

A technological marvel, the Crystal Tower was used as a power source for all the mechanical means the Allagans developed, gathering the rays of the sun itself and extend that energy to and through all the land.

With this limitless energy at their disposal, the Allagans reached a summit of transformational innovation. This apex, however, encouraged decadence. The

clones described this time of exponential growth as when society became root-bound: decaying as they felt no need to improve upon themselves or their lives enhanced by the existence of the Tower.

Cities fell into disrepair. Frontier lands fell to the wilds. Society invented no more as they felt they had no more to create.

One technologist refused to allow the decline to be the end of Allag’s fate. His name was Amon, and he believed restoration was only accessible in the wake of a charismatic leader. The only person that fit his high expectations was the founding father, who at this point was long dead. Allagan aetherochemistry never being a field with limitations, Amon sought to resurrect Xande.

Upon a successful experiment, Xande rose from the dead and precisely accomplished what Amon predicted. It was not long before the world began to feel the might of Allag once

more. However, the resurrected emperor required more power to complete his ongoing goals.

He found this means to achieve dominion in the might of Darkness.

Wielding Darkness requires a prodigious amount of energy energy that the Crystal Tower could not gather from the sun.

To meet the requirements, Xande would order the production and launch of the lesser moon Dalamud, where it amplified the Tower’s ability to receive the power necessary for this ambition. It was Dalamud that sent a massive surge to the Tower, energy that escaped into the land and triggered massive earthquakes. This catastrophe is what would later be known as the Fourth Umbral Calamity.

IN SUMMARY ‘Twas fire from the sun that drove the unprecedented growth of the Allagans, casting away the gods in favor of their innovation and ‘twas fire from the sun that

ended it eras later. The endless demand for more power crossed the threshold of the world itself, the price paid in the loss of unprecedented growth. No nation after would ever rise to meet the Allagans in might.

In revisiting the beginning of this treatise, we know their achievements starting from the contributions of Saint Coinach and the discovery of his Find, to centuries of tomestones and passages of obscurity in records and scripture. Xande’s ambition was the pulse that beat the drum of progress in that era, indeed so convincing was he of his ability that one of the greatest minds of that time mused that only his return would save the sick society.

Studies in aetherial manipulation must offer gratitude in allowing the continuation of the art via the Empire’s excellent use of said art. Science and medicine and current means of husbandry pioneered and perfected.

Weapons and armors were at the zenith of design.

However, even at these heights, the Emperor demanded more.

No more would he gain.

Despite this, we learn from the actions of the NOAH expedition that his ambition laid to rest. We learn that the Crystal Tower was meant to be a beacon of hope for society. Moreover, as it was in that closing era when the world itself knew not how to continue from the end of their civilization, even now some people have risen to labor, who sacrifice in seeking of this goal.

To learn from the past, in order to safeguard the future. If we do not seek to fully understand the rise and folly of our ancestors, Nald nor any other god can intercede on our behalf. A true Rebirth by Fire is one that keeps the fires of warning ever lit from knowledge of the past for the benefit for all those who need aid. - END

Journal Entry 6 I had found the answer I sought. By the deeds of courage from the members of NOAH, the truth of the fate of Allag was revealed and its threats quelled. The feeling of having the final piece I needed for my publication was there. And yet, I yearned to not disrespect the deeper meaning of the expedition. I wanted to honor the sacrifices that took place in revealing the relics of the Empire.

So I asked Rammbroes to speak to me of his own experience. And he told me of the clones Unei and Doga and how they held onto a mission for millennia, surrendering their brief return to wakefulness to annul the dark covenant of Xande.

He spoke of G'raha Tia, a man of Baldesion who took the mantle of the Tower's custodian, and how he chose to use the powers of his ancestry to create a sleep until the Tower would be a source of hope for the future.

He spoke passionately of a mission, that NOAH would

continue to work towards that future that G'raha willed to awake to.

Hope. The optimism that the ancients held that was unsullied in the power of their lineage, past down through the survivors of the Fourth Umbral. Their expectation of a better future and their superstructure becoming the lynchpin of that positive progress. The Crystal Tower was never meant to be a construct for the harm and abuse of others but to their motivation. This was the confidence that cost lives.

And Rammbroes had been holding onto that brand given to him by G'raha before the heir to Allag fell to sleep.

As I pondered these events he looked at me and asked if I could favor the cause and while taking these events to document, strive to keep NOAH’s mission in my thoughts, and labor for a brighter future.

as we returned to our rooms at the inn. The crystals shone with a greater gleam like blue still stars paving a road to a new cause.

Later during evening meal, Atelloune shared her experiences with assisting the dig and testing her martial prowess against the gigant tribe.

I shared with her the intentions to carry on G'raha's wish, to which she wholeheartedly agreed to assist in - as long as the coin was good. She might seem overbearing and a typical sellsword, but I knew I sensed a desire for good, if for a moment. ‘Tis of little matter. I feel refreshed and renewed from the results of this excursion.

Onward to a future of promise is my new wish as a historian.

Hope you are all keeping cool this summer! With the sun blazing down on us, it only seems natural to talk about enhancing highlights and shadows. This time I’ll be talking about the Dodge and Burn tools.

DODGE AND BURN, A HISTORY Dodge and Burn are terms that were used before Photoshop was even invented.

They date back to the era of the first film cameras and refer to techniques that were used to either lighten (dodge) or darken (burn) specific areas of a photo by increasing or limiting the exposure in those areas. Fast forward to today, and they work in exactly the same way, but we no longer have to hang out in a dark room for hours. The Dodge and Burn tools are “destructive” tools. This means that once you begin to use them, you will be permanently altering the pixels of the photo and only by hitting undo will your photo return to its original state. Keep this in mind when you are using these tools. I always make a duplicate layer and work slowly. Sometimes a lighter hand is better than going in heavy and regretting it.

The photo on the right is the base we'll be starting with. Lots of metal and fabric to work with! And hair and skin on top of that.

With that said, let’s get to work!

DODGE TOOL Let’s start out with the Dodge tool. This will brighten whatever you paint it over. The Dodge tool is great for highlighting curves in metal armor or sparkling jewelry details.

Painting over the blade of a sword or plate armor can really bring a look together. You can also use it to highlight certain features of the face like the nose, cheekbones, forehead, or even individual strands of hair.

This can really add depth to your character and make them look more alive.

When choosing the brush sizes, pick a soft edge brush so it diffuses or spreads out the highlights more evenly. The smaller your brush, the more pinpointed your highlights will be. Smaller brush sizes are usually best for brightening eyes, highlighting hair strands, and adding shine to small metal accents and details. Larger brush sizes work better for adding dimension to faces, bodies, fabrics, and metals.

Remember to make a duplicate of the layer you’re working on. (Command/Control + J) Work slowly and methodically. Much like applying real paint to paper or makeup to skin, you don’t want to be too heavy handed.

A lighter touch will make the overall effect appear far more natural.

You can select which tones to brighten, Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights, and toggle the exposure to determine how much highlighting you want to do; I keep mine pretty low, about 10% to 20%. To keep things looking natural, make sure to paint where light would naturally hit. For example, if your character’s neck is in the shadows, you’ll want keep it darker since that’s the way the light is hitting your character. If you lighten things that are in shadows too much, they will look unnatural, flat, or even fake.

And some examples of what not to do! The one on the left has almost no shadow detail, making it look flat. You’ll notice that the one on the right almost has a glowy effect. If you are going for an ethereal vibe, then maybe this technique will work for you. Otherwise it just makes characters look like tthey got a little too close to the studio lights.

BURN TOOL Let’s look at the Burn tool. Now that you know Dodge lightens whatever you paint it on, you are probably assuming Burn does the opposite. You would be correct! I mainly use this to add more shadows in the creases of cloth, deepen shadows in armor, or on the sides of characters arms or legs to give them a subtle sheen. Just like with the Dodge tool, this is a ‘destructive’ editing tool. So always make sure you are working on a duplicate layer of the background and not the actual background.

In working with the Burn tool, you will notice you have the same options as the Dodge tool. Brush sizes work the same, as well as exposure and the tones you want to darken; Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights are all present. The dodge tool works extremely well in darkening shadows that already exist. I keep the exposure of my burn tool at about 9%-14% and build up shadows slowly.

I have found that introducing new shadows is difficult to pull off. It’s not impossible, just more difficult. Sometimes it just looks like dirt.

But if you work slowly and use the right exposure, it can make shadows on your character look more rich and contrasted.

Using the Dodge and Burn tools allow you to alter or add highlights and shadows to your screenshots without losing any detail. They are destructive, but the results speak for themselves. If you are still wary about introducing destructive techniques to your photos, then I have included this non-destructive dodge and burn tutorial. It focuses on using Curves, which I went over in the Winter 2018 issue of Augmenting with Arya, so stop by if you need a refresher! I have found that the tutorial works, but it doesn’t give you the same buildable effect as using the Dodge and Burn tools. That said, there are always multiple ways to accomplish the same effect in Photoshop, so pick whichever you are comfortable with, and happy editing!

Neither my Pearl Roselle Capeline nor my Endless Summer Glasses can protect me from the blistering sun as it scorches down on the sandy beaches of Costa del Sol. The only refuge from the sweltering heat lies beneath the waves, where the various sea creatures swim without much of a care in the world. The Kojin of Tamamizu have the right idea! Living in the Ruby sea sounds like a dream come true!

But why waste the gil or aetheryte tickets on teleporting there when you can just bring the sea home, and without the annoyance of the sand sneaking off to every nook and cranny? In this installment of Hydaelyn’s Hearth, I take you to my very own basement, in which I have created a haven befitting of a mermaid.

With a desire to capture the ambiance of the deep ocean, I lined the basement walls with the gorgeous Imitation Stained Crystal Ornaments, thus allowing natural light to enter the room with a deep blue hue. The Tiled Interior Wall maintains the water-like atmosphere while Ceramic Tile Flooring mocks the sand, though without the associated obnoxious mess.

In order to imitate the rays of the sun penetrating the water’s surface, an Ice Chandelier has been carefully hung from the ceiling. The ice blue light it emanates shines down to display the treasures cast from a sunken ship, gold spilling everywhere before finally finding its final resting place among the coral (Crimson Coral Object) and seaweed (Planter Partition paired with Potted Spider Plants).

The floating glitch was used in order to have various fish (Stuffed Takitaro and Stuffed Mazlaya Marlin) and jellyfish (Jellyfish Lamp) float overhead, allowing you to swim with the fish without paying an exorbitant fee that is typically associated with such activities. Tier 4 Aquariums placed up against the ceiling provide actual swimming fish to truly bring life into this mock ocean land.

are hidden within more seaweed (Planter Partition paired with Potted Oliphaunt’s Ear, Potted Spider Plants and Potted Maguey), providing the peaceful sound of running water to imitate that of the waves splashing across the ocean’s surface. Even a couple of ancient Megalodon Jaws don the walls!

A lush seating area is also provided, as swimming can be quite taxing. Complete with coral (Sumptuous Dimension Castle Vase) and seaweed (Potted Spider Plants), the Glade Couch surrounds a mast (Glade Pillar) belonging to the sunken pirate ship that sticks out of the faux sand. All of these little personal touches are sure to provide you with serenity and relaxation that comes naturally within the peaceful atmosphere of the deep ocean life.

I actually don’t think I have a personal style. The way I approach making glamours is very rational and calculated. For example, I always try to make sure the glamour suits the job and that there’s a clear concept or story behind whatever I’m putting together. It has to be unique, fantastical and true to the character it’s meant for.

I remember my jaw dropping when I found out about this cosplayer on Reddit. It was just after the Las Vegas Fan Fest 2018, and I - like every other cosplay-obsessed FFXIV player - had seen the stunning Lost Allagan Fending set that had won Judge’s Choice from Yoshi-P himself. I had not, however, seen the Myochin Samurai and Drachen Dragoon sets the same cosplayer had created previously. A speedy scroll down his Instagram filled with tons of process shots and polished photos of his costumes assured

me that I had to interview him.

Vin10doh, known as Zeru Eiji on Cactuar, is relatively new to building his own cosplays, but you wouldn’t know it from the professional finish of his cosplays and his graciously shared knowledge about his process and preferred materials.

After our interview, I found myself appreciating not only Vin10doh’s useful insights and tips, but also how Final Fantasy XIV continues to inspire its fans to create beautiful works of art to share with their fellow players and friends.

Let's talk a bit about how and why you started cosplaying. You mentioned on Reddit that you’ve only made FFXIV cosplays. Did you have an interest in cosplay before playing FFXIV, and the game just helped pull the trigger?

While cosplay isn’t a new thing for me, actually making my own cosplays was an entirely different world. I was introduced to it by my girlfriend Nikumonster, who has been cosplaying for over a decade. I started playing FFXIV not too long before and the designs in the game looked so cool. I thought to myself, “How can I not want to make and wear these?” As more patches came out and more armor designs kept being released, I wanted to make them all. Because of that, only FFXIV has my attention.

There’s a fantastic picture on your Instagram of all the individual Lost Allagan gear pieces laid out together.

With so many pieces and details, how do you start building a cosplay like that? What are your first steps and considerations?

The first thing I consider is the number of pieces that have to be made and then the number of details on each of those pieces. This gives me an idea of how long the entire crafting process would take. To me, the hardest step is making patterns and templates. It takes a lot of trial and error.

For example, a shin piece could look good on paper, but it can end up being too tight or loose on the actual shin once it’s transferred to the final material (EVA floor mat foam in this case). It’s the process of turning a 2D piece into 3D. But once that process goes right, there is the tedious part of transferring the patterns onto foam and cutting them out.That is truly a game of foam Tetris.

Do you usually have a clear idea what skills and resources you’ll need to complete a cosplay from start to finish, or do you tend to learn as you go?

Normally I have the resources and tools needed for a costume. I use my in-game character and 3D models from the FFXIV Textools program for references. I also have a workspace stocked with tools and supplies such as foam, glue, cutting tools, paint, and most importantly safetywear.

In terms of skills, I’ve developed many of them through experience and trying out tutorials.

I look to my girlfriend as well as costume and prop maker Evil Ted Smith when I need additional help.

Even so there is always trial and error. Whatever goes wrong, I learn from those mistakes and keep them in consideration for future projects.

Armor sets tend to be bulky, but from photos and videos it looks like you have a good amount of mobility in your cosplays. Do you prioritize wearability in your builds, or does the look come before comfort?

Since my choice material for armor sets is EVA foam, I have a lot of comfort and mobility. EVA foam is lightweight, durable, and flexible. It’s also affordable! What I am concerned about is the actual wearability of the armor: how it fits on my body, how it’s attached, if it will stay on and stay comfortable when I move. I also consider if I can put everything on myself or if I need assistance for certain pieces.

For those wondering, I have good mobility in my Lost Allagan and Drachen sets. I can run and even do dances. However, lying on the floor as a Dragoon is almost impossible (I’m sorry for not being a Dragoon the right way).

You switched from using worbla to EVA foam for your armor. Since cosplayers often use and recommend both, tell us a bit about your experiences using them, and why you've come to prefer EVA. From my personal experience, Worbla hasn’t worked very well. Not only is it expensive but it has been quite painful. Since Worbla is a thermoplastic (a plastic sheet that gets soft and can be molded when heated), handling it has resulted in burns. It will also melt or warp if worn on a hot day or left in the car too long.

Pointy parts have dug into my skin. Worbla’s texture is rough, so it has to be primed smooth with layers of wood glue, wood filler, car primer, or gesso (used to prime art canvas). But you can crack all of these primers if you drop, hit, bump, or bend your Worbla piece.

On the flipside, EVA foam is much more comfortable, accessible, and affordable. You can find it at the hardware store or online. I personally use foam from TNT Cosplay Supply. It’s very lightweight and durable, yet feels soft and smooth on the body, which makes packing my armor sets for storage and transportation easier.

EVA foam is also simple to repair with gentle heat from a hair dryer or heat gun if bent, dented, or folded. It’s pretty straightforward to prime, too; just apply gentle heat to seal the pores in the foam and then two to three coats of Plastidip (a flexible automotive spray).

I see more details the longer I look at your work. Is the painting and detailing stage your favorite part of the process?

Painting isn’t really my favorite part of the process, but it’s satisfying to see everything come together with all of the colors. What I really don’t like, is how horrible messy painting is. It’s also tedious for really intricate and hard-to-reach areas.

Any artistic project often looks its worst when it’s halfway done, and a lot of artists start doubting if their work will turn out as they imagined. Considering the intricacy of the cosplays you’ve tackled, was there ever a point you felt like you were in over your head? How do you keep pushing ahead when creating large and complex armor builds?

The one thing that will always get me out of a slump is the support of my girlfriend. She has more experience with making costumes, as well as skills that I don’t have. Whenever things don’t work out on my end she steps in and miraculously solves it.

I also have friends within the FFXIV cosplay community. They’re a great source of help and support. In the case of the Lost Allagan Dark Knight, I was in a rut with making pieces and the crunch for Fan Fest was approaching fast. But my girlfriend and a good friend saved the whole thing.

The cosplay wouldn’t have come to life without them. I think it’s important for people to have support from friends and family. They can offer advice and encouragement and help give you a break.

We can’t talk about your cosplays without also congratulating you on winning judge’s choice at FFXIV Fan Fest 2018 in Las Vegas with your High Allagan gear! I believe that was your first time really displaying your work to the FFXIV audience on a large scale. What was another highlight, cosplay or otherwise, at the festival, and did attending change your experience of FFXIV and/or its community at all?

Thank you so much! I honestly expected nothing out of the cosplay contest. Walking with fellow creators and my girlfriend (who cosplayed Stormblood Yugiri) was more than enough for me.

Winning the Judge’s Choice award from Yoshi-P himself was a huge honor and I couldn’t have been happier. That was my first time entering a cosplay contest and being in such a huge crowd.

The sheer amount of people was more than what I saw at the Eorzean Symphony in Hollywood, where I wore my Drachen set on the red carpet.

The contest was a little nerve-wrecking and I didn’t really stay on stage that long. Getting a huge number of congrats from fellow Warriors of Light (or Darkness) made me really happy and worth all the effort.

I’ve always loved the FFXIV community and Fan Fest 2018 made me love them even more. There were so many people interested in meeting me that night, since I had previously posted my progress on Reddit. I was actually called “the Reddit guy” and had a chuckle from that.

With the Lost Allagan and Dragoon gear sets under your belt, and plans to explore more tank armor sets, do you see yourself focusing solely on armor cosplays, or are you interested in branching out to learn more sewing techniques?

lot of cosplayers using 3D modeling programs in recent years. Have you used those programs before, and would you recommend them to newer cosplayers interested in building armor? Or do you think there’s value in learning pencil and paper patterning first?

I plan on teaching myself on how to use some 3D modeling programs, specifically Armorsmith.

I have zero knowledge of it but I feel creating cosplays will be easier for me once I master the program. As for newer cosplayers that want to build armor, I don’t recommend taking a huge leap into 3D modeling programs. The only exception is if they have previous experience with 3D modeling - which by all means they should go for it.

I see a huge value in learning pencil and paper patterning because there is an idea that people have to have state-of-the-art tools such as 3D-printers, bandsaws, etc. to create complicated armor builds, but it is the opposite! As cliche as it sounds, anything can be built if time and dedication is put into it. Paper and pencil is always a great place to start since anyone can pick it up from there.

Currently my focus is still on armored cosplays.

I can’t wait to see what kinds of armor Shadowbringers will have (hopefully something cool for Dragoon)! Although someday I want to learn sewing from my girlfriend so that I don’t have to rely on her for that. She did all of the sewing and embroidery on my Samurai.

I also want to learn how to use pattern making programs such as Armorsmith and Pepakura Designer. These would allow me to extract and create patterns from 3D models.

Paper and pencil has always been the classic way to create patterns (for armor in particular), but I’ve seen a 122

Tell us a bit about your character ingame! What is your main class, and what is your favorite way to spend your time in Eorzea?

I started off as a Gladiator only because it was the class that uses a sword, only for me to realize later on it was a tank class (stupid me!). I actually main Samurai now because I personally feel like their rotations are easy to manage, and I seem to get more dps compared to other classes.

Just like my love for armor, my character is fully equipped with armor even as a Samurai. I drew a lot of inspiration from Genji or Raiden (even though they’re actually ninjas) and tried to base my glamour on that. I don’t really have a favorite way to spend my time in game because I like to do a lot such as Gold Saucer and helping friends with clears. There’s just so much to do in this game that I can easily see myself playing FFXIV forever (4.5 years for me so far).

What is your name, how old are you and how did you first get into drawing?

Hello! I’m mainly known as Goay. As for my real name, I like to keep it to myself. Also, I’m 23 years old. I started drawing when I was a little child, during kindergarten. Seeing movies by Ghibli like “Spirited Away” or “Princess Mononoke” and series like “Naruto”, “YuGiOh!” and “Doremi” on television inspired me to practice drawing in manga style. Also, the best friend of my brother, who is five years older than me, always showed me her manga drawings. I began looking up to her, wanting to draw like her.

Are you a freelancer artist or is drawing a hobby?

I wouldn’t call my drawing only a hobby, but it’s also not my profession. I am currently a student at a university in Germany, aspiring to become a chemistry and geography teacher. Originally, I wanted to become a chemistry and arts teacher, but the people back then told me that I didn’t have any talent and that they will not accept me as a student. I was disappointed back then, naturally, but life goes on. I just continue drawing during my free time. I either draw for myself, or take commissions. This way, I can purchase drawing materials, such as a new graphic tablet or a new sketch pad for traditional drawings. In addition, the money I earn provides me with the opportunity to visit my friends at conventions and have fun.

I think it’s their loss for not accepting you into art university. Do you think this has to do with your art style?

When I think back of when I did the entrance art exam, I remember that they found on every of my Illustrations or sketches something that was not to their taste. They also didn’t believe me that I drew some Illustrations myself without any reference. I also showed them some of my manga style works, even though I know that they don’t like this type of style at universities. The reactions and all were kind of frustrating for me 128

and I struggled a bit with my feelings. It didn’t help that I also saw some portfolio folders from other applicants.

Some of them had unique styles, but most of them didn’t have a real style – at least not in the way the university conveyed to me. After seeing that they accepted so many with such “undefined” styles, I started believing that an art university simply wants to make students do art in their desired way and not support them developing an individual style. Back then, I had already found my own individual art style, and to be honest, I’m not sad anymore that they didn’t accept me. After all, I would never have wanted to change the way I do art, because I love drawing so much.

Your art style is reminiscent of CLAMP manga.

Do you take inspiration from them?

Oh dear, I hear that question way too often. First things first: No, I don’t take any inspiration from CLAMP. I was born in the late 1990’s. During this time there wasn’t any Clamp series on television in Germany and I only read BANZAI magazines, a compilation of shounen manga like Naruto, Hunter x Hunter and YuGiOh!. I am actually not a huge fan of the CLAMP style.

I only watched two anime about four years ago, but that was not during my style-finding phase. Instead, I take my inspiration from many things in my life. I love looking at fancy baroque dresses, ornaments or pretty flowers as well as other artists who I admire, and much more.

For example, my two favorite artists, to whom I look up to, are Midori Foo and Miwa Shirow. They both started to become my idols many years ago, when I was trying to find my style. To come back to your question, I don’t really know why people associate my style with CLAMP. But I often hear that my style makes them feel nostalgic and reminds them of the “nice old anime times” and the good memories they associate with that era.

So, I like to believe that they associate my style with a sense of nostalgia. I personally would prefer people to see my style and not only think of CLAMP, because they are not my inspiration.

Don’t get me wrong, the team behind CLAMP are awesome artists, but I’m an artist myself who would like to be remembered for what I draw. But I am indeed grateful if my art can trigger such beautiful emotions in somebody’s heart.

I think part of this “CLAMP” aspect is that your images are so intricate and detailed.

Tell us, how long do you work on one image?

It depends on the picture I’m drawing. Sketching usually does not take up so much time and depends on the details I add. But I think I roughly need around half an hour to two hours.

The one sketch commission that is shown was for a good friend of mine and took me around two hours because of the heavy detailing in it. For bigger illustrations it’s hard to say how long I need. Starting off from around 20 hours to 90 hours if there are many characters on it or many small details, like flowers or crystals or massive armor.

Do you play Final Fantasy XIV yourself?

Yes, I play FFXIV. I started playing it around one and a half years ago. A good friend of mine who is also an artist recommended the game to me.

You can find me on the Shiva server. On most of my illustrations you can find the character that I play, Rue Song. It’s the dark Elezen with the dark blue hair and green eyes. I really love playing this game even though I don’t like MMORPGs and only enjoyed playing the offline titles of Final Fantasy (I really love them) so far.

Through FFXIV, I gained a new small community that started to really like my drawings and supported me in so many ways. Two years ago, I was struggling with finding support for my art.

When I opened commissions, only very few were interested, and I felt discouraged. I even thought I should stop posting my art online. But after meeting so many nice people online and receiving so many nice comments about my illustrations, such as how they have touched people’s emotions, I began thinking otherwise again. And I’m so thankful for that since it gives me the strength to work harder on my art and show it to the world.

I think we can all agree on how amazing the FFXIV community is! Is there a special person in-game who has accompanied you through all the ups and downs of your artist life?

There are many people who mean a lot to me. However, if I was to single out one person, it would be my boyfriend who helped me through all the ups and downs in my life. I actually met him in FFXIV! He was there for me during my worst times and is still there for me today. As an artist, I often struggle with my art. Many questions revolve around my head such as “will I improve?”, “why can’t I draw it like I have it in my head?”, and so on. Offline, I have my fair share of challenges as well. For example, having university exams and managing art commissions at the same time. It takes a lot of mental energy and good time management. But with the support of my boyfriend and the awesome FC behind my back, I find the strength to persevere. We are like a family who constantly supports each other, give strength, motivation, happiness and love every time somebody needs it. I am very happy that I got the chance to meet these awesome people both in game and in real life, and who have become a big part of my life!

What type of characters are your favorite motifs from FFXIV? I love Elezen and Femroes the most. But other than that, I do not have a specific favorite character. Hm, when I think about it, okay, maybe my own character, but I think that’s normal that their own character is your favorite! *laughs*. But mainly, if there is a lot of detail, long hair or is just an interesting character, I’m always excited to draw them. I just really like to draw a variety of different people and characters. For example, a good friend of mine has a clumsy Femroe and I just love her so much. He gave her an awesome personality.

When I first saw her, I wasn’t a huge fan of the character, but after hearing stories and learning more and more about her, I started to fall in love drawing her. Also, my boyfriend plays a little lalafell girl. At first, I was afraid to draw her, because I mostly draw ‘bishounen’ type of characters and not cute and small lalafells. But after drawing her several times, I started having a lot of fun and began experimenting and trying out drawing a variety of different types of characters and races.

finger sandwich The Bismarck's take on a common meal popular amongst Galadion Bay's dockworkers.

Toast your bread in the toaster or oven. Whisk the egg with a dash of milk, salt and pepper.

Grease a small frying pan with a little butter and heat over medium heat. Once hot, pour the egg mixture into the pan and let it cook for about 3 minutes. Flip one half over and continue to cook until desired doneness. Let cool.

Butter both slices of your bread generously.

Stack some lettuce and tomato on one buttered slice and put your omelette on top. Top it off with the other slice of bread. Use a toothpick (or several) to keep the sandwich in place. Wrap well and put in your picnic basket.

Prep. time: approx. 20 minutes Serves several people

You will need (per serving): ● 2 slices of walnut bread (check out the website for the recipe) ● alternatively 2 slices of toast ● 1-2 Tbsp. of butter ● 1 large egg ● some milk ● some lettuce ● 2 slices of tomato ● salt and pepper

acorn cookie Now I know what you guys are thinking: Where’s the acorn in this?! While you can technically purchase or even make acorn paste by yourself, it is quite the uncommon ingredient. I have therefore decided to substitute the acorn paste for marzipan. Added bonus: these cookies retain their shape, so if you always wanted to try using a cookie stamp, this is your chance!

Put all ingredients in a bowl and mix by hand until you get a nice smooth dough. Cover in cling wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

A crisp cookie made with iron acorn paste.

A favorite of the Qiqirn.

Prep. time: approx. 1 hour Serves several people

You will need (per serving):

Preheat the oven to 170°C/350°F. Roll out your dough to your desired thickness – if you like soft, chewy cookies, go for a thickness of about half your little finger. If you prefer crispier cookies, roll them a little thinner. Take out your cookie cutters and go wild on your dough. If you don’t have cookie cutters, just use the top side of small glasses or cups.

● 240 grams of all-purpose flour

Transfer the cookies to a baking sheet lined with baking parchment. Bake the cookies for about 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges begin browning. Take out of the oven, wait for about 2 minutes, then carefully transfer the cookies onto a cooling rack. Let cool completely. Line a small tin or tupperware box with paper napkins and carefully stack cookies. Cover tightly and add to your picnic box.

Fermented tea might not be readily available everywhere (just like acorns…), so you are free to substitute your tea with any tea (for example Chai!) that goes well with milk. If you plan on brewing tea on the spot, I recommend bringing both hot water and hot milk in respective thermos bottles.

For an iced tea approach, prepare the tea at home and add sugar to taste while still hot to help it dissolve in the tea. Once cooled you can either add cold milk or omit it and fill the tea in a transportable pitcher.

A thick, creamy beverage popular on the Azim Steppe made from steeped fermented tea leaves and a generous helping of dzo milk.

Serves several people

You will need (per serving): ● 1 serving of fermented tea ● Milk and sugar

Since this is tea, nothing can really go wrong here. Just follow the instructions on the package.

If drinking warm, make sure to heat the milk as well unless you enjoy drinking lukewarm muddy water of Limsa Lominsa.

I’ve always had a lot of respect and admiration towards roleplayers. As someone who previously used to write fan fiction based around the games I was playing, I often found myself stopping in my tracks in game to idly watch roleplayers’ conversations and how they integrated the world around them into their stories. Some of the scenarios we’re casualindividuals happening across each other in a tavern, compelled by mead to tell each other their tales of heroism or sorrows. Others were incredibly detailed instances that you know had to take a lot of time and planning, where multiple individuals on both the sides of good and evil came together at the peak of some character created quest. It’s truly captivatingand is the experience I wish more people would acknowledge instead of focusing on “Balmung ERP” jokes.

This will come as a surprise to absolutely no onebut one of the most interesting aspects of roleplay to me is the character creation. Most specifically, how these roleplayers design their characters as a visual representation of the personalities they mean to portray through their glamours. As a glamour

artist, I have the capability of making whatever kind of glamour I want on any given day just because I want to look cool. Roleplayers, however, have to put in quite a bit more thought into this process. Yes, the Nezha Lord's Togi looks awesome- but it doesn’t look like something an Ishgardian member of the Holy See would wear, does it? Active roleplayers have to constantly be mindful of their persona and that their looks are an actual representation of that.

That, my friends, is what we will be focusing on: The Roleplayer’s Closet. What’s in there? Why is it in there? Is it ironed? (Just kidding on that last onemuch like male viera, Yoshi P. didn’t think there was a need for wrinkles in this game. Too soon?)

I had the absolute pleasure of getting to know three roleplayers and discussing with them their thoughts on glamming with their specific characters in mind.

Be respectful as they allow us to browse their walkin wardrobes; and I don’t care how much you like those shoes- put them back. They aren’t yours.

That’s more of a reminder to myself, because lord have mercy do I love me some shoes…

Hirokuli (or Hiro) as he is called by his friends is a young and spirited Lalafell Pugilist.

Starting out from a family of 13 brothers and sisters, he is used to a large family and constantly being surrounded by people. Growing up on the tail end of his parents breeding campaign he was subjected to physical labor by his older siblings and constant teasing and the pressures of being the "low man on totem pole". However, due to his upbringing, young Hiro is near impervious to mental subjugation and once he sets his mind on something, he is going to do just that. He is physically shaped just like any member of the Lalafell race with the exception of his muscular constitution. Constant labor and chores have toned his muscles to a very peculiar hardness. In the terms of his 4th oldest brother Jarakuli, "Hitting him is like trying to punch a mountain face." He is not bulky nor abnormally huge in his peoples’ standards, just much more solidly built. His body type quite naturally drove him to more and more physically demanding roles, such as the pursuit of the Pugilist way of life. Even as a novice he could usually just shrug off blows from monsters several times bigger than himself, and the training only enhanced his speed and tone even more.

His eyes on becoming one of the most acclaimed Monks in the world, Hiro is constantly training both his body and his mind daily trying to reach his goal.

During discussion, Hirokuli described himself as having some “slight narcissistic tendencies” where no one enjoys looking at Hiro more than he, himself. With this in mind, his creator tends to look for clothing pieces that would flaunt his assets- such as open shirts to expose his muscular chest or sweeping styles of clothes that billow in the breeze.

His first glamour is a perfect representation of all of this.

Here he wears the Griffin Leather Coat of Striking, in a bold sky blue that really pulls the eye in towards his torso and bare chest- I’m sure that type of attention would suit his ego well! In order to keep the focus on the area of his body that he’s most proud of. I love that the rest of the outfit maintained a more muted and subdued color scheme. And get a load of those pants! The Quan pants are the epitome of relaxed and flowy items within this game and match his character’s preferences perfectly.

This particular glamour has a very special meaning to his

character. From a roleplaying perspective this brilliantly blue jacket was a honeymoon gift crafted for him by his wife, Popoto Poto. To make it even more special, the gold and blue coloring matched his beloved’s hair and eyes! He describes the coat as an, “extension of her hugging her husband, even if they couldn’t be close.” From a personal perspective, the actual player of Popoto left the game and the glamour was a reminder of all the memories and stories she and Hirokuli created together.

His second look is considered more along the lines of loungewear; after all spending all that time training and toning his muscles should earn him some reprieve. In a brief interview, Hirokuli’s creator stated that tight-fitting clothing didn’t totally fit with his character’s personality, but he would occasionally sneak in a more form fitting piece as long as it’s paired with something more loose fitting. This outfit is the perfect representation of this! The look feels very light and casual, and the Survival

Shirt is relaxed just enough to contrast the structured look of the pants.

My favorite part about this look is even though it’s very neutral toned and laid back, all the jewelry adornments, belts and the design on the pant still give off the “look at me” vibe that Hirokuli seems to enjoy. It’s subtly flashy… If that is a thing.

If it wasn’t, now it is. Taking it to trademark.

I asked all our roleplayers what they would recommend to a new roleplayer as a good place to get started building their character wardrobes, and what tips and tricks were beneficial to them. Here was Hirokuli’s response: “ I would tell them to take FULL advantage of the glamour chest. Pick a class or two whose armor you like visually the most, and make glamours off of that.

I like the Monk and White Mage outfits better than most other classes I’ve seen around the city with the possible exception of bards, glorious bastards that they are. Also, when making your glamour chest, consider where your character will be roleplaying most often.

With only 10 slots available, you have to be a bit picky to save some inventory space, so choose carefully. Give yourself a comfortable lounging outfit, a summer and winter outfit, indoor casual and professional attires. Something that you can change on the fly should the opportunity for roleplay come up randomly when you’re out gathering, fishing, or fighting.

Some of the greatest InCharacter conversations I’ve had were 100% improvised, unplanned shenanigans that I often look back on with a smile. “

Hely spends most of his time studying arcane formulae or a dusty, Nymian tome. When he is not using his time to advance his research, he may be found on the ground floor of his cottage working in his alchemy shop mixing concoctions to sell. If he decides to mark something to be stolen or accepts a request in the Electrum Quill newspaper, he’ll write a very elaborate letter to the victim informing them of their “visit”, only to appear in the dead of the night, suns later.

Hely had a good childhood as far as he can remember. His father was a Seeker of the Sun Tia who met a brilliant mathematician Keeper Miqo’te in Dravania during one of his many travels and they settled in Eternal Bond. But that was many many years ago, way before the Sharlayan gates were locked shut. His father was allowed entry as a citizen of Sharlayan after his relatively long time spent among them, living as one of them. Hely was but a baby during the exodus and he does not remember anything of his time in Eorzea.

Hely trained under a friend of his mother, Professor Gerraltdieux - influential Archon and writer of the legendary essay on arcane geometries called Dynamics of a Meteor. Stern and rigid, he has one of the most strict traitsounning plans in the motherland, even for an Archon. Relying on the physical development of his pupils as much as magical and mental, his students were expected to be as skilled at mining ores as they were at classifying them and their purity. As a Hermetic, his skills are in Astromancy, Alchemy, and Aetherology. Of course, being a gentleman himself, etiquette was demanded of every one of his pupils.

Hely is following on his mentor’s footsteps and diligently training under his tutelage, including his goal of one day becoming an Archon whose work on Aetherology compare to his own master’s. And thus he came to Eorzea to undertake a deep and profound research on Nymian fairies, including their Aetherial nature, their constitution and characteristics.

In the meantime, his master entrusted him with an alternative job - not a Bibliothec himself, Professor Gerraltdieux believes that while knowledge should one day be of open access to all, not every tome or object should be available to the eyes and hands of the unprepared. Thus Hely often engages in mysterious heists where he attempts to disappear with copies of the Necrologos, Belah’dian daggers, and Mhachi rods of Void arts.

He recently married an Au Ri Onmyoji and Geomancer who co-runs his own newspaper in Ul’dah. He uses it to secretly take requests to rid poor people of their master’s unholy possessions, after hearing of the suffering of a Gridanian staff member after their mistress engaged in Voidsent dealings.

Hely’s glamours do an excellent job pulling in factors of his past and upbringing, changing them into a physical representation.

When asked what aspects of his character inspired these glamours, he made note of Hely’s pride in being Sharlayan.

This is beautifully represented by the use of teals, whites, silver, and gold which are colors typically seen within the Sharlayan flag. Many of his glamours also include long ceremonial like robes one might expect from an astute intellectual, as well as appearing put-together and gentlemanly in a way his predecessor would be proud of.

He describes this first glamour as his more “day to day” attire that is suggestive not only of his alchemical mastery, but also fits in with the guise that he is wealthy. The vials that hang from both the front and back of his coat are functional in purpose- as Hely likes to be prepared in case he stumbles upon something he’d like to collect and study later.

I find that his alchemist glamour is a wonderful nod to many aspects of his character’s life.

Cauldronmaster’s Overcoat dyed that vibrant green not only ties in the cool toned Sharlayan color scheme, but some of its smaller details are reminiscent of his other areas of interest.

The trim that looks like the changing phases of the moon, along with the star upon the chest, serve as a reminder of his interest in Astromancy. Never overlook those small detailsnot only do they serve in adding general visual interest for your look, they also could also serve in adding another level to your characters story.

His second glamour is far more ceremonial in nature, and is described as the type of look he would wear while practicing his magic in Aetherology. This glam allowed him the opportunity to finally use the Cane of the Round- but not simply just to wield as a cool, glowy weapon. For his story, this staff is described as an “aetherial torch” that is only kept alight with Hely’s concentration. The constant glow of the staff is attributed to the mastery of his craft. This particular choice in weapon is smart, as that soft blue glow is similar to the tone that the game uses for the actual flow of aether.

The gloves here also serve a really interesting purpose: not only do the gems upon the Star Velvet Long Gloves of Healing give off the impression of wealth, but Hely also describes the stones as being functional. Each gem serves as a representation of each of the six elements, which allows him to better attune with and manipulate aether.

When asked for his opinion on recommendations for new roleplayers, his response was as follows: "Write down your story (doesn’t have to literally have it written, by the way! It existing in your mind is fine!). Who is your character?

What kind of personality do they have? People one way or another dress themselves in a way that expresses something about themselves that they want to show (or hide). A brooding and tough person with a harsh past is possibly going to dress in more practical clothes.

not even have much glowing elements or even be small and portable to hide their magical aptitude entirely. In the other hand, a pompous, aristocratic person will show their highbirth and snobbishness even in a supposedly dark and brooding role, such as a Dark Knight.

They may wear armor that is simultaneously a lordly coat, favoring silver instead of black to better reflect reddish against their magic. Their sword will be intricate with a beautiful gem on the crossguard or pommel to act as a medium.

The first one is trying to hide their magic to appear “tougher” and mysterious. They want to keep people looking at them wondering, “what does that person do?”. The second is putting who they are, their nobility, way above everything else. They may be defending the oppressed, but only because in their eyes it is all that could be expected of a noble to do.

If you haven’t had the “aha!” moment yet, color schemes are a great basis for your roleplay character’s creation. Much like how we are prone to having favorite colors, or owning more clothes in certain shades because we feel like we look better in them- our characters are the same way. As her name implies, Proud Moss just can’t get enough of those earthy, green tones! When asked why these particular shades resonated so much with her beautiful roegadyn, she stated that these more muted shades help portray the low key vibe of her character. Green is typically considered a soothing and relaxing shade, and those deeper tones are far more calming than, say, a vibrant metallic green. I also found myself relating to her character on a personal level when she confessed that her love for this hue was also due to the fact that “it’s a lovely shade and goes well with her hair color.”

Proud Moss’ first glamour is all about casual comfort, but still chock full of her characters personality and lore. That dainty Green Viola Corsage seen in both glamours presented here today was actually a gift from a special suitor that had been preserved by a friend to allow for daily wear, making it not only a sweet token of affection, but also a potential discussion point when engaging into a roleplay conversation!

The Ala Mhigan Gown, while being just an overall great glamour item, also gave a small glimpse into the family background of Proud Moss.

As she stated in her biography, Proud Moss was adopted by a travelling merchant. During discussion she stated that this top was a well-made piece of her adoptive father’s culture that she enjoyed being able to wear.

Her second glamour still heralds the importance of comfort, but also takes into

account the need for flexibility, as well as her clan’s lore. Some of the Hellsguard lore often talks about showing off their incredibly muscular physique, which Proud Moss stats lead to her creating several outfits that showed off her arms and torso.

For this glamour Proud Moss likes to keep her arms bare to allow for the ease of those sweeping caster motions, allowing for full range of motion.

Still, she keeps the palms of her hands in mind by using the Pagos Field Dressing to provide extra cushion as she climbs through ruins in her quest for relics.

She also took care here to provide me with her logical choice in using the Eastern Journey Bottoms. While there aren’t any belts with functional items on this piece, she roleplays in this glam as if there is. And

that’s totally okay! Roleplay is all about the imagination- and guess what? As if this item wasn’t cool as is, she also roleplays that this particular pair of pants has pockets.

She recommended this to new roleplayers just starting their dive into the sea of glamour possibilities: “The Gold Saucer is your friend!

There are tons of basic pieces that aren’t terribly expensive to stock up on! Don’t be afraid to dress down some until you can make money or level crafters to make those more expensive level 1 glamour pieces. Also, make sure to look through the Disciple of Hand/Land pieces as well. There are great shoe and glove options there that fill very specific niches. “

I know the saying goes “there’s more to ___ than meets the eye,” but for roleplay part of what defines the character is what we physically see. The very clothes your character wears should tell part of your story, and the roleplayers featured here did a fantastic job of showing multiple ways of doing this. Fill up those glamour dressers with items you feel would appeal to your character- whether it be a piece in a color they fancy, or seems to be appropriate for the job you want them to do. The most beautiful thing about it is, it is personal to you and your character, and it’s up to the rest of the roleplaying world to find out why those pieces are so special to you.

We recently got the chance to sit down with Matt Hilton, Director of Community at Square Enix.

We talked about his job, the community and his favorite energy drinks.

Tell us a little about yourself.

First off, thanks for taking the time to chat with me. I’m not very used to being interviewed, so hopefully my answers are interesting!

My name is Matt Hilton, though players may also know me as “Bayohne,” from the FFXIV community team. My official title is “Director of Community,” and I’ve been working at Square Enix since 2001 where I started as a QA tester on FINAL FANTASY X. I’m an avid gamer, spending lots of my time in Eorzea playing as a white mage (my main) and warrior. I prefer tanking and healing over playing DPS because I can’t stop looking at the party’s HP even when I’m playing a different role. That’s probably more than enough rambling about myself...

Aside from that, we spend a lot of time planning community events (such as PAX East) or contests (like our recent Flowers for All screenshot contest).

As I mentioned before, we work closely with other departments planning upcoming media events or campaigns, work on social media, and check in with the support/GM teams constantly for any issues we need to escalate. One of the best parts of the community team is that we all wear different hats and each day can be different based on what’s needed on any given day.

What are your responsibilities as the Director of Community?

How involved are you in the planning of the Fan Festivals?

I help to lead the community team and interface with our counterparts in Japan and Europe on all things community related, and make sure that our teams are able to do their jobs smoothly and ultimately work hard for our players.

The community team is very involved with Fan Festival planning! But it’s never on the shoulders of just one team. When we start planning, we create our Fan Festival “committee” internally and start assigning tasks and roles to various leads from all of the XIV team, like PR, marketing, community, the events team, etc. We all work very closely for months leading up to the event before we open doors to the public.

I work closely with our other departments like PR, marketing, our support teams and GMs, and make sure that we’re all on the same page and working together closely for all of our in-game updates and out-of-game events. There is a lot of coordination (and meetings…) in my position.

What does your day-to-day work life look like?

One of the fun aspects of the planning is when our teams meet up globally and discuss various plans for the shows that we want to execute, brainstorm together, and leave with a basic roadmap and plan of the shows.

Actually, this is a surprisingly difficult question to answer! The community team is often very reactive, so it’s pretty typical that our work is dictated by the events of the day. Speaking generally for a member of the team, it starts with us looking through the latest feedback from the community (on the official forums, community

The shows are a lot of work, but it’s fun to get to be really creative and try our best to create an experience that will be enjoyed by the attendees.

The dev team always seems so lively and goofy when we see them, do you have any fun or crazy behind the scenes stories you can share with us?

Hmm, how can I pick just one? I will say something that touched me recently was during the 2019 Tokyo Fan Festival. A few of us from the NA community team were there helping at the venue the night before day one kicked off. We finished for the night and returned to the hotel when our co-worker asked if we could come back to help with some last minute goodie bag assembly.

We headed back over and got to work on the production lines that were quickly set up. The cool thing was that everyone was stuffing the bags together, from the community team, GMs, PR staff, and even the development team members. I mean, literally the senior staff that would need to be on stage throughout the event the next day— even they were all there.

It’s just amazing to see how much everyone really cares about the players and sometimes it can be definitely be hard to see the passion and dedication that they put in. But that night, at 1:30 AM, we were all shoulder to shoulder working together to make sure that attendees would have a great show. It’s stuff like that that I wish I could put a spotlight on more.

On a lighter note, I remember during E3 (2018, I think?) when Yoshida was logged into the NA Worlds and chatting with players in game between interviews in the media suite. Someone shouted and asked Yoshida about pineapple on pizza (the age-old debate), and Yoshida simply replied “NO PINEAPPLE!” and everyone had a good laugh.

Seeing their enthusiasm and excitement at our events (like Fan Festival, PAX, E3, etc.) is just electrifying. I often talk about how seeing our players and having a chance to interact with them directly is one of the best things for the dev. team to do.

It really does recharge them and inspire them to go back to work and do their best. It can be hard to see the impact of your work in an office, so that’s why I’m always glad whenever we can bring over team members to events around the world to have a chance to meet the adventurers that they’re creating a game for.

Are there a lot of guidelines for community interaction set up for the team or do you count on them to be creative and innovative?

There aren’t any specific guidelines that we need to adhere to. Maybe some that we impose on ourselves or certain ways to do things, but there aren’t many black and white rules. In general, I’ve been doing this so long and working so closely with our counterparts in the other regions that we each kind of know what works best, or knows how to work within our limits (like manpower hours in a day, etc.) when we do.

I really count on our team members to come up with fun things they want to do or propose— then we tweak it, and then we execute. I think I mentioned earlier that one of the best aspects of the job is being creative and trying to think of fun things we can do, or do with players, at events, ingame, or even on streams.

Is it possible to track success in community management? Is there something you feel could go a little smoother than it does now?

What is something you absolutely love about interacting with the fans?

I think success for us is making sure that we are doing the best job that we can.

We're constantly focused on hitting targets we set for ourselves set for ourselves, and working hard for the community. A lot of work happens “behind the scenes,” so I think community work is often a kind of a mystery for our players. We are their voice, and we work hard to share feedback (both ways). So as long as we’re upholding that, then I think we’re successful.

no right or wrong way to play and have fun, and that’s something I try to get across to people when we answer X question over Y. We’ve done live questions at shows and people say “you should filter the questions so we get important ones!” We’ve done pre-selected questions too and we get told “you only chose the ones you want to answer!”

Something that could go smoother… I’d say, maybe trying to help players to understand that there are many, many voices that we hear. Something I’ve been asked before at events is, “Why don’t you answer important questions, like about [X]?” I had to explain that the particular questions that those users asked were the important questions for that person.

How do you feel about fans being inspired and creating content, like Aetherflow Media, for others to enjoy?

I think we all know that Eorzea is inhabited by tons of different players and everyone is playing the game the way they want to. Experiencing the game and enjoying it in their own way. There is

things like them. I know that in the offices in Japan, they have tons of player creations hung up on the walls, adorning desks, and in shared spaces so that they can admire them. I touched on this earlier, but works like these really help give the team inspiration and show how passionate our players are.

Are there differences in how the US community team operates vs the EU team?

I don’t think so. FFXIV is a very global title, and all of our regional teams work closely together to ensure we’re working the best we can. Aside from the obvious things like “the European team covers different languages than we do,” we are very similar. Same for the Japanese team, too.

We have weekly meetings between the teams discussing the important topics and upcoming plans, and we make sure we are all on the same page for major beats coming up and things we’re all working on.

How do you guys process positive feedback and the response from the actual players? And on the flip side, how do you cope with complaints or criticism?

Both the positive and negative are handled the same, and negative feedback is just as important as the positive. Our main goal is trying to take the (many) different voices and distil them down to the key points for the dev. team to review. One of the hardest parts are that passionate players (both on the positive and negative side) can be very verbose. Keeping in mind that feedback has to be translated, one of our important tasks is to try and boil it down to the core.

being constructive is really the most that we could ask for. A lot of times feedback is very passionate, and based on feelings, so we have to work to share the root of the commentary so that the dev, team has a clear understanding of what is being said. The team often asks us: “how do the overseas players like [x new content]? What kind of new [y content] would they like to see in the future?” So players being honest and sharing their feedback is important and it does help the team make adjustments (where they can) to the game.

In general, keep feedback coming! But if I could be selfish, I’d suggest “please keep it clear and concise!”

You seem to be an energy drink enthusiast. What is the very best liquid source of energy out there?

Oh boy. It’s probably not good to admit how many energy drinks I drink in any given week…

My favorite energy drink is zero carb, zero sugar “blue” Rockstar! It’s my go-to and what I always look for when we’re at an event (and even in other countries). Sadly, my body probably consists of almost 70% of energy drinks at this point…

Oh no, no that wasn't like the pure motivation, hah. I actually just like glamour in general but it seemed like it was an easy task for me to help with in the reporting threads that started up on Reddit.

I had one other motivation a little more selfish, I REALLY wanted the Spring Bottoms that no one had unlocked yet and everyone suspected it was from getting 100pt a number of times or an accumulation of so many points over the weeks.

One of the other big things in the beginning was to get 100pts it required you to have your full left side correctly dyed and you only have 4 chances to get it correct, so between me and Nari I think we had 12 characters with access to the Gold Saucer and I used those to target and find which dyes were needed for 100. I think my support into the Fashion Report initially for the first few months was more being able to find all the dyes correctly pretty quickly than anything else. I just stocked up a bunch of them and went at it trying to get it done before people in the EST timezone woke up so they'd know how to solve for 100.

Now days its more about having knowledge of the games items then so much the dyes but I do the same thing to find all the dyes as I used to because sometimes players are after just 80 so the best combinations require a few dyes.

Forward Shortly after the launch of Stormblood, I took my first steps into Eorzea. I was a brand new adventurer, and the beautiful world of Final Fantasy XIV was completely new to me. I had yet to know anything about being called to the Waking Sands. I had yet to wonder why the healer immediately left my very first time into the Aurum Vale (though I didn't wonder about that for very long). I had yet to learn about who the Scions, the Ascians, or the Garleans were.

It's been nearly two years since I started playing this game. I have had good times and bad times.

I have made friends who have stuck around and made friends who have moved on to other things.

I have now learned all about being called to the Waking Sands and the toxicity of the Aurum Vale. I've met the Scions and experienced their downfalls, destroyed some Ascians, and fought the Garleans for the freedom of Doma and Ala Mhigo. I have totally and completely fallen in love with the lore and characters and the story that make Final Fantasy XIV unique. Eorzea is a place of refuge and its people, the players, make it a home.

I have so many stories about the great times I have had over the last two years with the friends I have made. My favorite story has to be about clearing Alphascape as an Astrologian. I was never a very confident healer, even though I loved the role. Astrologian especially was just so much fun for me to play. However, I was so nervous I would mess up that I avoided healing level 70

content. Even though it took me a couple of weeks to get up the courage, I ran as Astrologian my first time through all four Alphascape duties. I went in with my FC who were nothing but encouraging to me. They kept telling me that I could do it and insisting that I shouldn't give up. And I cleared. It was my first time not learning a fight as a DPS first. I was so happy and my FC celebrated with me. Even though it was only normal mode (I have yet to attempt Savage), they let me be proud of my personal victory.

Since then, I have run all current content as an Astrologian and have learned to be a confident, usually competent healer.

Had it not been for the encouragement of my friends, I would not have discovered a job I thoroughly enjoy playing. They gave me the inspiration to even get my Goddess of Magic title.

The world of Hydaelyn and her inhabitants mean so much to so many people. With the arrival of Shadowbringers at the end of this month, we as the Warriors of Light will begin a new chapter of the story.

However, in the midst of our excitement, I wanted us all to take a moment to appreciate the stars in the dark: the people and memories that have made this world great over the last two years, impacting our lives in both real and intangible ways.

As we're finishing someone shouts out "Can anyone help me with these red chocobos?" And then the huge train of dozens of level 70s fly over and descend on those damn birds. The guy just shouts "HOLY CRAP!" and laughs. It was pretty funny.

Quintana Dinori Omega Taking part in the Naadam - that fight was genuinely E P I C and I loved every second of it. Still gives me goosebumps now, thinking back to it. I play as BLM and I remember getting to the final area of it and being part of that giant melee and just throwing fireballs left right and centre, with the music going off in the background and the frantic shouting from my allies telling me to try and capture the thing you had to capture (I forgot exactly what).

Grimm Jow - Sargatanas Entering Kugane for the first time; it was juuuust after sundown and the title, the theme, and the city lighting up made for an incredible experience.

Dawn in the Azim Steppe. I had entered the zone at night and had been exploring the map before continuing the story.

I was up on the cliffs above Mol Iloh when the sun started to come up, so I thought I'd watch the dawn. Needless to say, when the daytime theme started to play I was in awe.

The pre-Lakshmi HM cutscene, during which we see a real overt and in-story sign of the Echo's,

and by extension, the WoL's power. It just felt SO COOL to have our influence in the game being showcased in such a way.

And while I don't have screenshots for it, the conclusion to the Omega storyline. It was an incredible experience, lore-wise, expanding on ancient history as well as showcasing other FFs. It has to be my favorite raid and the montage at the end with Alpha and bitty-Omega was wonderfully heartwarming.

Veluca - Reddit Unironically, and I mean this without a hint of sarcasm or facetiousness: Raubahn:(Savage) was my favorite experience of the entire expansion.

There's something magical about everyone in an entire server being trapped in the 203

same dilemma as you and everyone else.

Watching everyone try to fight against the wall placed in front of them, watching as everyone around you tries to make the best of the bad situation. I felt for the first time on my server, really part of the community. Everyone would be shitposting in Fringes shout chat, sometimes a person would get through the wall in your FC and they'd suddenly be the center of attention, telling everyone about what they were seeing in the new zones and dungeons ahead of you like a storyteller from a far off land, telling you about unknowable mysteries few have ever borne witness to. The sense of mystery the wall afforded the rest of the expansions content made everything seem so grand.

The Fringes always felt alive, with the roaming FATE parties running back and forth past the forming queues for Raubahn, doomed to fail as they were. Maybe you'd run along the river and spot a few dozen people trying to level their fishers. Maybe in the dead of night you'd hear about someone who'd gotten so far ahead they'd gotten to the other side of Castellum Velodyna, they'd invite you to a party and you'd glitch through the gate on their two-person mount, and suddenly you had a whole new area to explore, a place of 204

legends that you could regale everyone else in your FC with tales of.

I slept for less than 4 hours total in the 3 days Raubahns Wall remained up, by the time the floodgates opened I was already level 68 from all the FATE's I did, I kept going afterwards, I didn't sleep until I was 70, and until I'd killed Shinryu, the rush and excitement of it all carried me through alongside the entire rest of my server. Afterwards I fell into bed and didn't leave it for 36 hours. I felt awful at the time, but looking back on it, I wouldn't trade a second of it away.

I feel sad that with the upcoming World Visit feature, we'll probably never get to experience anything quite like this again, because in my experience at least, some of the greatest moments in games like these are borne from disasters like this.

So, my favorite moment would probably be when we fight her.

It's the first time someone other than a character telegraphed to be stronger than us (Gaius, Zenos, the primals, Raubahn, etc.) has managed to hold their own in a one-on-one fight.

More than that, she's probably one of the trickiest MSQ solo fights we've had.

Plus there were no in-story excuses for how we won or how she was able to put up such a fight. No "oh they were weak from fighting the rest of the enemies" no "oh they're stronger because of a plot coupon." Nuh uh. It's a straight up brawl between us (with adds, but yeah).

It was fun, it was exciting...and it really gives you the sense that there are other people out there in the world close to your strength. That you're NOT alone at the top. AND that not everyone close to your strength is necessarily an enemy, along with being perfectly willing to fight, eagerly in some cases, should the need arise.

It also makes me wanna see a grand melee between the Xaela Tribes and the Eorzean Alliance.

instances were so messed up so nobody could enter PoTD for a while. Met a ton of people doing that, and it was a great experience. Since you were doing HW FATEs, it was sort of nice to go back through all of those zones again before embarking on the new expansion.

Getting up the nerve to actually join PF groups for the first two EX primals. I generally get very crippling performance anxiety when attempting that kind of content which basically locks me out from doing any kind of difficult 8-man content, but I really wanted to experience how it felt to clear content when it comes out, so I just decided to go for it.

I was on the verge of quitting the game, but being given such a wonderful opportunity and meeting so many folks in person rekindled my love of the game.

I've been playing FFXIV since around 2.1, so I am nowhere near a new player, but Stormblood was the first time I had taken raiding more seriously. Always coming up short and not clearing every fight back in Heavensward was something I hated and I wanted to try and I didn't want it to be a habit.

Our group was pretty decent during Deltascape, but it was clear that many of the players were feeling burnt-out and raid nights went from having progress to full on regression.

Most people didn't seem to mind it, but deep down I had began to feel the same frustration I felt in the past. Because of this, I decided to go on my own on off-raid days-- yes, I wanted to take on party finder! People talk bad about pugs, and while I did have some..unfortunate parties, I also had my fill of really good parties.

Once I had found myself finally able to prog NeoExdeath, it was also the same time that FFXIV 208

had been going through those ridiculous rounds of DDoS attacks, and half the time we couldn't stay connected to the game. The night I finally cleared was no different, and I'll never forget it. Myself and my best friend, Shadow, had constantly been disconnecting and dying. So many lagging issues causing people to get clipped

by Delta Attacks and Emptiness puddles...Lag causing tanks to miss their unvulns for Double Attack.. During Grand Cross Omega, BOTH of the healers disconnected one after the other. One of them came back and we were fortunate enough to have LB3 ready, so she used it at the right moment.The DDoS attacks made our progress in that fight 1000% times more frustrating and Shadow and I spent many nights staying awake near 4 am to try to squeeze out that clear.

We finally cleared that Saturday night, and all of us screamed into our microphones.. loud enough to the point my downstairs neighbor had asked if I was okay the following morning. All those disconnects, the stress headaches finally paid off. And despite all of that, to this day it continues to be one of my favorite fights..I've even met some really good friends in there during weekly clears and eventual farms after the limit was removed. I hope I can have a victory like that again in Shadowbringers..

The lvl 70 questline expanded on that, showing the flip side, the struggle with the part of the Warrior of Light who feels they haven’t done enough, who feels the guilt of every life they’ve taken, and is fully aware that each person they kill is a loved one missed, hopes and dreams snuffed out. The fact that the WoL doesn’t find refuge in numbness and cynicism about all these lives they’ve taken, but bears the full burden. As Fray says, “It weighs as it should” And then having Fordola lampshade this when she sees our past through the Echo and is stunned that we’re somehow not a gibberish wreck.

Zeet19 - Reddit To be honest. Beating Final Omega. I was going through a mental block as the last raid tier I cleared was the 1st tier of Alexander. I made it to the final phase of Brute Justice before that group collapsed. Took a break, got burnt out on the Exdeath and took a year off.

Elspeth Avagnar Sargatanas My favourite memory of all in Stormblood was doing the Eternal Bonding pilgrimage with my boyfriend. We met in-game a few months before that, and finally decided to get married ingame. I'm a sentimental person, so when the Eternal Bonding quest asked me to take my partner to a bunch of locations throughout Eorzea, I asked him to make a day out of it with me.

We went through Eorzea, visiting and praying at every shrine, talking and reminiscing and generally being two idiots in love the entire time. When we got to the shrine in La Noscea, we just sat down and talked and admired the view for a while. I remember feeling in that moment more comfortable with and connected to a person 211

than I ever have before, and thinking to myself that it was a moment I would never forget.

And sure enough, I never have.

R'nehva Tia - Lamia One of the most powerful lines I think about often from Stormblood came from when you visit Namai and cause the village a lot of turmoil due to the fact they're scared that you might bring misfortune upon them. But just like a Warrior of Light and a Scion, you get to work helping people and making them realize you want the best for them, and when they come and attack Zenos, I was just so full of feels Isse: We're not going anywhere!

Do you hear me!? We're not running away! What you're doing is stupid and reckless and I never wanted any part of it, but here we are!

The pauses and the inflections in the VA for this series of lines is so good, it reminds me every time what and why our character is fighting

to me is something special. It brought me lifelong friendships and such joy that I cannot even articulate into words. It's changed my life forever.

Final Fantasy has become more than just a game to me. I find myself logging on every day to spend time with the people I have come to respect and love as friends and family. Through thick and thin they support me and the time we spend together is priceless. I find that there is not enough time in each day to spend sharing my love for this game and for them. My best memories of Stormblood didn't really start until almost a year after its release. I came to Mateus from Balmung at the start of the expansion to escape the insanely long queue times. I played pretty casually, since I had a pretty busy work schedule, so I didn't really make too many new friends when I transferred.

some amazing people. I even got in-game married to one of them! I've been playing FFXIV since 1.0 and I've never felt the need to meet anyone I played with. Boy, did that change with this crew. What started as a fun hypothetical conversation turned into full-blown plans to meet and I'm happy to say I finally got that chance last month. Being able to hug the people who I've spoken to everyday for almost a year was the best feeling and made me happier than I had been in a very long time. These people helped me more than they will ever know and I truly don't know how I would have gotten through the last year without them. You guys mean the world to me and I'm so thankful to FFXIV for giving me the opportunity to make lifelong friends. I wouldn't have had the chance if it wasn't for an unfortunate accident, Stormblood, hellishly long queue times! Silver lining, huh?

Lastel Rembrandt Hyperion I pretty much played through the MSQ of Stormblood alone and didn't have any friends. I was coming back to the game from a few year hiatus. It was both an exciting and anxious time for me since I had just finished school and been living away from my country (Mongolia) and family for 2 years and really missed them all.

And then I came to Azim Steppe in game. I remember it so well lol because I sat there alone in front of my TV looking at the NPC shouting "fresh buuz!" at 3AM. I started to sob and felt like I came home. Azim Steppe is based off Mongolia, the yurt, buuz, morin khuur and Naadam we have it all in my country.

I really didn't expect to see so much of it in game!! The Azim MSQ was the first time I actually sat through every CS (sorry I skip most...) and really enjoyed it all! And another thing that made me feel so at home was that my chara was an Xaela since HW when I first started the game and that Xaela were the Mongolians of FFXIV! It just made me feel so sentimental and it was the first time a game became a personal attachment for me. Since then whenever I miss home I usually go afk in the Steppes next to the kids playing morin khuur.

Qih Mewrilah Adamantoise The best memory I have of stormblood is being on the forefront of crafting. Everyone knows I'm "the crafter guy" in my FC. But I was asked to help outfit a raider who's team was going for the world race to finish the last tier of the Omega raids the fastest. It was pretty much the highest form of crafting I could think of. I amassed a team of crafters,

gatherers, runners, melders, pretty much had every facet of the entire project planned from the servers opening to having him outfitted.

The second the servers opened for the patch, we went in head-first. People camping in different zones to find out when/ where the new items spawned, myself and my crafters testing out rotations on Teamcraft to make sure our stats were good

I hope in the future I can work with the same team again, as the server visit system will be in place by 5.0, and I'd love to continue crafting at what I believe is the highest level the game has to offer.

Katarh Mest - Lamia My favorite memory is how the players found creative ways to circumvent Raubhan EX! A FC member who managed to get through before things got really bad had a dual seater chocobo.

Folks in various communities found that if you parked a two seater chocobo's tail feathers through the door blocking Castellum Velodyna, you could drag someone ahead and they could run and hang out with the M tribe. That one wee rebellion as the game servers struggled to accommodate the crowd made the dejection from the problem a lot less irritating!

(And in the meantime, I worked on my fisher in the zone.)

Throughout the entire battle against Tsukiyomi, you are challenged with the might of yin and yang, light and dark, truth and deceit. It all begins to truly form as you battle her internal conflict of Zenos only to witness the trust she held for Gosetsu still strong, his will to protect her.

Myst - Ultros Stormblood has many good memories. Laughing at Little Sun, joining your comrades in a battlefield together as a team giving you a feeling of union and strength, freeing nations from tyranny; all wonderful memories, but none of them quite strike me with surprise and emotion as the battle against Tsukiyomi.

Most people saw Yotsuyu as a heartless wretch preying on the inhabitants of Doma.

For me, it was a struggle to finish the fight. The amount of symbolism and attention to detail in regards to this character and how she influences an entire Primal fight left me in tears. I hated Yotsuyu, but I found warmth in the relationship of Tsuyu and Gosetsu. Her two sides, like the moon, shining down a small light on a black world.

Elisa Swann - Faerie In terms of story telling, this was an enjoyable story. I was heartbroken by the whole

Yotsuyu arc. I hated her, then pitied her, then grieved when she came to the conclusion there was no way out. The most spectacular fight was her trial.

The most LOL moments though have been thanks to Magnai. I love-hate him with a passion.

But I enjoyed all the side things/ fan service we have been given - from 8 bit Magnai, to "Little Sun." My favorite character though is Alpha, because he embodied the sort of optimism that is otherwise lacking right now (tonally) in the game. As far as other memories, this was a really huge turnover expansion for us in the FC, but I remain grateful for this franchise's commitment towards growth and listening to the playerbase.

I have a feeling this will the expansion we look back and go "this was the beginning of the game's exploding popularity and why we have met so many new people along the way."

Also FANFEST was awesome again. Way more engaged with the community this fanfest. :heart:

My friend actually waited for me to do Ala Mhigo and then Shinryu at like 1 AM because I needed to do my level 70 SMN quest (LEMME SUMMON BAHAMUT, YOSHI-P). Everyone in our instance was still pretty much at iLvl, so all of us were getting our butts kicked. My friend and I called it quits at 6 AM that first night after not clearing, and then we went back in later that afternoon. A few more hours and then we got a party that got the fight down and at about 10%, my friend was like, "I'm doing it, we're clearing this, I'm using LB3." About a 218

minute later he was at 2% and I stopped DPSing altogether (BAD DECISION, I KNOW) and started crying -- "WE DID IT, OH MY GOD WE FINALLY BEAT HIM AAAAAAAAAAH!" It's not that hard of a fight really, but it was the satisfaction of completing the new expansion when it was barely a month old and just being caught up to the game, finally. We still talk about that time a lot.

Other good memories: - My boyfriend started playing FFXIV and caught up in four months!

My most memorable moment in Stormblood is a sidequest in the Azim Steppe. A Dotharl girl is willing to pay you to escort her to a special place. Seems simple and easy, and it was, until you get there and she asks you to deliver a package back to her friend in her tribe, and to not worry after we leave her. This was a strange request, "why didn't she give this package to her friend before we set off?"

Anyway, back at the tribe I deliver the package. The friend opens it and it's a suicide note, along with your payment for the escort. The realization of what I had done, of what I had helped this girl do. It's a feeling of guilt I will never forget. A feeling of guilt made worse as I accept the reward for this deed.

Fugetsu Seigaku Mateus He was with us from our arrival in Kugane, our guide to the Ruby Sea, introducing us to the Confederacy, the Kojin, the Raen of Sui-no-Sato, and the Four Lords. In the Auspices arc, he offers us plenty of comedic relief and earnest help. Somehow, the writers managed to take Soroban -- a character without facial expressions or voiced dialogue -- and make him endearing.

His story culminates in the final quest of the Auspices arc, when he sacrifices himself -- his very soul -- to revive Genbu in a lastditch effort to save the Ruby Sea from the wrath of Koryu.

With his final moments, he tells us that he understands the consequences of his ritual and asks only that we look after his

home, Tamamizu, all while the heartbreaking “Parting Ways” plays in the background. With Genbu revived, the Four Lords act in unison to seal Koryu away once more. Only in the next cutscene is it revealed that Soroban’s intense training with the Auspices meant that his soul was not consumed in the ritual, and that he was to stay at Reisen Temple to become the next Genbu -- a fitting reward for such an act of selflessness.

Soroban might not be an especially obvious favorites, but I found his story to be one of, if not the most memorable of Stormblood.

Hranz Vitalus - Mateus FFXIV has been an amazing experience for me. My wife and I started playing roughly two years, and while it's a short time in the grand scheme of things, a great deal of things have happened. Joining this world and community, making friends and shedding those who were less than, has brought some much needed light into our lives. It's a long story, but thanks to FFXIV I can see my wife participate in something outside the confines of our apartment. More importantly, I get to see her smile and laugh, as if Hydaelyn's blessing has extended into reality.
