WHAT IS AETHER?

AetherisaguildestablishedinMarch2022, making it a relatively new addition to the LTKY guild community. Despite being so young, Aether performs its activities and events on par with any other guild in Finland. Aether has its own unique mascot, the 'Mafia Chicken,' with an intriguing backstoryAether has quickly established itself as a vibrant and proactive guild, welcoming students from various backgrounds and degree programs. This hasledtoastudentculturethattriestobe inclusive toward people of different backgrounds ThegoalofAetheristomake a comfortable environment for students to study in. Aether tries to ensure a bright futureforeveryonestudyingatLUT.

The guild embraces an essential part of Finnish student culture by adopting the tradition of overalls. Each guild member has the opportunity to sew distinctive patches on their overalls, symbolizing their participation in various events and activitiesorganizedbyAether.

AsastudenttraditioninFinland,eachguild has its own special room, where students from a specific degree come together to hang out and connect. The 'Slounge,' Aether's guild room, proudly stands at the heart of Mukkula's campus, greeting every LUTstudentwithawarmwelcome.

Nomatteryourdegreeprogram,Sloungeis beopentoeverystudentwhoisinneedof a space to socialize, work or just relax. LUT students can easily access the guild room using their key cards on weekdays from 9 amto3pm.

You can also meet our beloved mascot, Mafia Chicken! This charismatic character is sure to bring a smile to your face and add an extra dose of joy to your campus experience.

Moreover, the windows of Slounge proudly showcase diverse posters from LUT departments, highlighting essential information, as well as updates from other guilds about events, including exciting Aether activities. Additionally, there's a designated window dedicated to sharing memes, where students can show their senseofhumor.

Foraddedconvenience,theguildroomhas a kitchenette, where students can brew a cup of coffee or tea and store their food in thefridge.

Comfortable chairs and tables are available for those who need to work on assignments, providing an ideal workspace. And of course, for those who need a break between classes, there are board games available, as well as a video gameconsole.

To log in to different LUT pages, you need a dedicated LUT email account, which comes in the form of lastname.firstname@student.lut.fi.

This account is extremely important as itwillhelpyoutomanageyourpersonal study plan (PSP), receive emails from professorsanddoyourschoolwork.

Everyuniversitystudentneedstheirown student card. In Finnish universities, studentcardscanbeacquiredthrough theFrank app, which provides you with adigitalcardonyourphone.

The app also shows you a wide range of discounts, from restaurants to clothing. Many other places also offer student discounts so it is good to ask whereveryougo!

Frank app is valid only in Finland so to those who wish to enjoy student discountswhentravellingcanpurchase anISICcardthroughtheapp!

Most international students arrive in Finland at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport

From the airport, you can make extensive use of Helsinki's public transport system HSL to explore the capital area The easiest and most comfortable way to travel around Finlandisbytrain

To travel to Lahti, you can buy a single ticket for the whole journey from the airporttoLahti.Thejourneystartsatthe airport station, and via commuter train P/I to Tikkurila station, and to Lahti. If you buy a student ticket without the student card, you risk a €80 fine. The ticketsandroutescanbefoundviaVR's website, VR's mobile app, or the Junalippujamachinesattrainstations.

...ANDAROUNDLAHTI

Lahti has a bus network called Lahden Seudun Liikenne or LSL. The network is divided into 4 zones, and all you need will be found in the inner zone A or B. The bus runs from 5:00 to 23:00, with someexceptionsoncertaindays.Ticket prices differ depending on how many zones you want and whether you have studentstatus.

CITYBUSES

Thephysicalbuscard,calledtheWaltti travelcard,canbeobtainedin2ways:

Fill in a form found at the campus and bring it to Palvelutori (2nd floor, Trio Shopping Center) You will also getstudentstatusenabled

Order the card online then register student status via the account managementpage

With Waltti’s online shop, you can top up the card and pay every time you travel, or buy a 30-day per-zone unlimited pass. Buying the pass this way will cost you a small service fee, whichcanbewaivedviatheapp.

The Waltti app (available for both iOS and Android) offers similar features as the physical card. You must register as a student (like above) to get student discountsintheapp.

TwomajorbusterminalsinLahtiarethe transportcentreMatkakeskus - a fancy nameforthetrainstationandadjacent facilities – and the city market square Kauppatori. From there, you can either take bus number 1K – Karjusaari, 1S –Soltti,or13–NiemitoM19campus.

ACCOMODATION

Most students opt for the subsidized student accommodations owned by Lahden Talot But why choose student apartments? Well, they're a bit cheaper than the regular ones, and you usually get utilities, internet, and laundry included in the rent Plus, you can skip thehassleofbuyinghomeinsuranceor paying a hefty deposit The cherry on top is that these apartments are convenientlylocatednearbusstops,so you won't waste hours commuting everyday Oh,anddidwementionthey come with storage areas for all your unusedstuff?Nottoforget,there'seven acommunalsaunatorelaxin!

But, of course, there's a catch to all these perks Student apartments tend tobenoisierduetoallthepartiesgoing on, and their condition might not be top-notch. Well, you know what they say,yougetwhatyoupayfor!

Whenyoumovein,besuretocheckthe place's condition carefully. If anything needs fixing, don't hesitate to shoot them an email or give them a call. Oh, and it's a good idea to look up the maintenance company ' s phone number just in case you accidentally lock yourself out (which, let's be real, happens to the best of us). Trust me, youdon'twanttobeshellingoutmoney togetthedooropened!

Before you set foot in Finland, make sure you ' ve got that housing contract all sorted out If you don't hear back from Lahden Talot at least one month before your departure, don't wait around - get in touch with them right away Sometimes they can be a bit forgetfulaboutapplications

The good news is that starting from autumn 2023, all new students are guaranteed to be offered a place So thattakesaloadoffyourmind

or not! Some students did not receive a housing offer at all If you are one of the unfortunate ones, please apply to private rentals or crash at a friend's place A list of reputable agencies is available for your convenience at https://elut.lut.fi/en.

You have the choice of registering your address as permanent or temporary Permanent is recommended since it allows you to access a wide range of services, both public and private. You can opt for temporary status if you are sureofwhatyou'redoing.

By registering your address as permanent, you become eligible to apply for a Finnish ID Card through the police It is important to note that the card is entirely optional Serving as a supplement to your passport, the ID Cardremainsvalidforupto5yearsfor EU/EEA citizens or until the expiration of your residence permit for non-EU/EEA individuals

The Finnish ID Card can prove to be immensely valuable, particularly for non-EU/EEA students who lack eIDAS identification

DRIVINGLICENSE

Ifyoupossessadrivinglicensefroman EU/EEA country, it remains valid for driving in Finland until its expiration date However,onceyourEU/EEAlicense expires, you must apply for a Finnish driving license. For those with licenses from other countries, the rules for driving and exchanging licenses are morecomplexandmayvary.

ELECTRONIC IDENTIFICATION

When logging in to certain services like Poliisi,Kela,orVero,youmayencounter a screen displaying various banks' logos This screen facilitates the verification of your identity online through strong e-identification (EU's eIDAS) There are several methods availableforthispurpose:

Certificate card: This method involves retrieving your personal information from the chip on your Finnish ID card To use this method, you need a card reader and a dedicated program installed on yourcomputer
