2018 ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit Introduction Welcome to the 2018 ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit The ACA is the premier organization representing paddlers of all abilities and in all venues across the country.

Whether it’s our national standard for paddlesports instruction, our far reaching stewardship initiatives, insurance for your club or event, our commitment to paddlesports events and recreation, or simply competing in a local citizen’s race, our volunteers and staff are here to serve. As part of the ACA's leadership role in the paddlesports community, we have initiated this signature event to bring together industry leaders so that we can learn from each other in a collaborative environment, help refine best practices, network together, share ideas and have fun.

Paddle safe – paddle often - The ACA Staff A Brief History of the ACA Founded in 1880 by a group of 15 notable canoeists, the ACA has grown into the nation’s largest and most active nonprofit paddlesports organization with 30,000 members, over 150 Paddle America Clubs and 100 Affiliate Organizations across the United States and abroad. ACA was established on the shores of Lake George, NY on August 3, 1880 with friendships forged in the 1870's, canoe sailing regatta's, regional canoe club events, and the canoe cruising and exploration of America's waterways. Nathaniel H. Bishop, a prominent 19th century canoe explorer, was known as the 'father of the ACA'. Bishop, along with the first Commodore, William L. Alden, declared in the 1880-81 ACA Yearbook the object of the ACA "shall be the promotion of canoeing."

Original the association focused on camaraderie, racing, poling, canoe sailing and extended waterway exploration. Throughout the early 20th century the ACA evolved from a loose knit group to an incorporated entity whose influence began to reach across the country as well as internationally. From the 1940's through the early 1990's, the ACA placed significant resources into all aspects of paddlesport competition, from local and national races to winning two World Championships to being the National Governing Body (NGB) for paddlesports for the U.S. Olympic Committee. With strong ties to the American Red Cross, the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America, the instruction program was formalized in 1973 with the advent of the ACA Canoe Instruction Certification Committee. Over the past 40 years this committee has also been known as the Training Committee, the National Instruction Committee and currently, the Safety Education & Instruction Council.

Publications began in the 1880's and ranged from Forest and Stream and The American Canoeist, to Canoe, Paddler and Paddle Dealer. Today, ACA has partnered with Rapid Media.

The ACA is dedicated to promoting canoeing, kayaking, rafting and stand up paddleboarding as wholesome lifetime recreational activities. We accomplish our mission by providing a variety of programs and public services in such areas as: event sponsorship, safety education, instructor certification, waterway stewardship, water trails, paddler's rights and protection, and public information campaigns. We are affiliated with over 300 organizations, such as Subaru of America, L.L. Bean, and the U.S. Coast Guard that help us to pursue our mission.

For over 130 years, the ACA has been the voice of paddlers across the country. Through the tireless efforts of volunteers, committee members, board members, and staff, the ACA continues to work at the grassroots, regional and national levels to promote fun and responsible canoeing, kayaking, rafting & stand up paddleboarding on America's waterways.

2018 ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit Introduction A Letter from the ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit Chair: Since 1990, the ACA has continually refined and shared instructional best practices designed to help individuals with physical disabilities paddle as comfortably, safely, and with the same performance potential as all others. Since the inaugural ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit in 2014, the world of adaptive paddling has changed and grown dramatically. The 2018 AP Summit will explore and share most of those new developments.

In 2016 and 2017, the ACA worked with Adaptive Expeditions, Craig H. Neilson Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to import the largest shipment of NELO Paracanoe Cinco and Paracanoe training boats in U.S. history, and along with a team of ACA Instructor Trainers, the coalition led trainings from coast-tocoast to help paddling clubs incorporate beginner paddlers with disabilities resulting from spinal cord injury into the sport of Paracanoe.

In 2017 and 2018, thanks to a generous grant funding from the Craig H. Neilson Foundation, the ACA and Adaptive Expeditions partnered on expanding the ACA Adaptive Paddling Program to new paddlesports disciplines that had never before been used in Adaptive Paddling Workshops – Rafting, Stand Up Paddleboarding, Bellyak, and Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayak. Outfitting developed by this project will be on display for discussion and refinement, and newly developed rescue techniques and risk management considerations will be shared and practiced.

The 2018 AP Summit will also present results from the ongoing Advanced Communications Instructor Endorsement Curriculum Development Project. With funding from Disabled Sports USA and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Adaptive Expeditions is leading the development of a new ACA Instructor Endorsement. The Advanced Communications curriculum shall convey current best practices to instructors who want to seamlessly incorporate individuals with hearing impairments and deafness, vision impairment and blindness, as well as speech and language impairments into fully integrated paddlesports programs.

The 2018 ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit will bring together all types of industry leaders so that we can learn from each other in a collaborative environment, refine best practices, network together, share ideas and have fun. The Adaptive Paddling Summit will include classroom seminars and on-water workshops led by premier adaptive paddling instructors and programmers from around the country.

Regardless of your skill level or experience, the Adaptive Paddling Summit offers something to help make your paddling life better and to help you share that passion with others.

2018 ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit Daily Schedule Kevin Carr - Transfer Techniques - Think Like Your Back Depends On It! Many paddlers with disabilities resulting from SCI will need assistance getting into and out of a paddlecraft. In this session we will discuss the hazards of transfers, both to the transferers and the transferees, and we will explore techniques, best practices, and technology to reduce exposure to those hazards.

Presentation 2: Outriggers: Rescues for Paddlers with SCI Some paddlers with disabilities resulting from SCI need additional stability in a paddlecraft. Outriggers have become a standard tool to create stability for paddlers who require it to be successful on the water. But what happens during and after a capsize with outriggers attached to the paddlecraft? In this session we will explore the modes and differences in the capsize event and teach new and modified techniques for rescue using the outriggers as an element. Come prepared to get wet (including goggles and nose plugs if desired) and to brainstorm - we will be learning by doing! The classroom discussion will be followed by time on water implementing the new skills.

Biographic Sketch: Kevin Carr is the owner and chief designer at Chosen Valley, LLC and its adaptive paddlesports arm, Creating Ability. He started the company 14 years ago when his aptitude for solving mechanical problems intersected with the need for safe, effective and cool adaptations for paddling. The years since have been filled with wonderful experiences watching paddlers of all ages and abilities discover (or rediscover) the freedom, independence and joy that being on the water can bring. Whether it is providing trunk support, reestablishing points of contact & control with boat & paddle or providing a path to the water, Kevin finds deep satisfaction in observing, listening and creating solutions. His favorite pre-paddling warm-up that he teaches each of his students is to stretch their facial muscles – because those smiling muscles are about to get a workout. The smiles say it all, and having the ability to put them there is his greatest gift.

Crystal Skahan & Anne Wessman - Paddleboard Seating, Rescues, & Risk Management Considerations for SCI Through the 2017 Craig H. Neilson Foundation grant, ACA Instructor Trainers have developed several types of SUP seating and outfitting that better enable people with disabilities resulting from spinal cord injury to more independently use SUP for touring, fishing, and even surfing. This presentation will look at techniques used and lessons learned. The classroom presentation will review findings and “current best practices” in SUP seating adaptations, rescues, and risk management considerations for individuals with spinal cord injury. Presenters will review photographs, video, and results from Adaptive Paddling Workshops utilizing SUP as their paddlecraft in 2018. Following the classroom session, we will move to the water where we will have an opportunity to view demonstrations of seating adaptations, and practice newly developed rescues and risk management practices.

Presentation 2: Advanced Communication Skills for Instructing Paddlers with impaired Speech, Language, and/or Processing Delays This session will highlight communication strategies for enhancing paddlesports instruction for students with speech, language, and/or processing delays. In this active learning environment, we will spend a time reviewing the process of communication, examine communication tendencies, and practice strategies that may enhance teaching efficacy. The classroom discussion will be followed by on-water practice of new skills.

2018 ACA Adaptive Paddling Summit Daily Schedule Presentation 3: Teaching Techniques for Individuals with Hearing Impairments or Deafness Participants will explore background information, interaction & etiquette, paddler assessment, visual & kinesthetic teaching techniques, and risk management considerations for better incorporation of paddlers with hearing impairments or deafness into paddling programs. The classroom discussion will be followed by on-water time implementing new skills.

Biographic Sketch: Crystal Skahan is an ACA Adaptive Paddling Instructor Trainer and hold both L2 Coastal Kayak and L1 SUP Instructor Certifications. Crystal is a member of the ACA's Advanced Communications Curriculum Development Work-Group. Crystal is a Recreation Therapist, Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) and serves as the Education and Training Director at Northeast Passage (NEP). Anne Wessman grew up in Utah and has developed a deep love for paddling and being on the water. Her position as a recreation instructor with the National Ability Center encouraged her to seek additional training and skills through the ACA. She is a Level 1 SUP Instructor with an Adaptive Paddling Endorsement. Anne has worked with people of all ages and abilities in various outdoor programs. Anne is a member of the ACA's Advanced Communications Curriculum Development Work-Group, and was Kokatat's Most Improved Paddler at the East Coast Paddlesport Symposium in 2017. Anne and her husband enjoy kayaking, paddling boarding, camping, and mountain biking together.

Morgan House & Nik Miller - Paracanoe: Paddling, Racing, & Education for paddlers with SCI This presentation will cover Paracanoe, Paracanoe classifications, and Paracanoe’s part in the Paralympic Games.

The focus will be paddlers with disabilities resulting from SCI. This presentation will discuss both the competitive side as well as ways athletes can get involved in local clubs, how to stay safe while paddling, and how to develop skills as Paracanoe athletes.

Biographic Sketch: Nik Miller is one of Team USA's current top Paracanoe athletes. Morgan House is American Canoe Association's Director of High Performance & Competition. During his kayak racing career, Morgan participated at more than 20 world-class venues in roughly a dozen countries. He was on the U.S. National Sprint Team from 2003-2012, won 50 national titles & spent 5 years living and training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA.

Adam Masters - Improving Function & Inclusion for paddlers with SCI through Prone Paddling or Bellyaking In this two-part session participants will be introduced to prone paddling using the Bellyak, a form of kayak paddled in the prone position. The Bellyak can be used with a wide variety of disabilities and is especially relevant for paddlers with disabilities resulting from SCI. Therapeutic benefits for different individuals, as well as potential modifications, facilitation approaches, and risk management considerations will be addressed. A classroom lecture will be followed by on-water training and techniques.

Biographical Sketch: Adam Masters is the creator of the Bellyak, a kayak designed for paddling prone. Adam has created the Prone River Paddling discipline for the American Canoe Association and regularly works with adaptive

Marcel Bieg - In the Guide Seat, Empowerment for Rafters with Disabilities Resulting from SCI WW Rafting is a universal sport that allows nearly anyone to access far reaches of the backcountry in a way few sports can. Traditionally, rafting has been appealing for people with disabilities for this exact reason. Unfortunately, way too often this meant being a passive passenger on a raft rather than guiding the craft. Through the 2017 Craig H. Neilson Foundation grant, a team of ACA Instructor Trainers developed several rafting Guide Seats that enabled a much larger percentage of people with disabilities resulting from spinal cord injury to take the oars, control the raft, and guide others down whitewater rivers. This presentation will look at techniques used and lessons learned.

The classroom presentation will review findings and “current best practices” in rafting seating adaptations, rescues, and risk management considerations for individuals with spinal cord injury. Presenters will review photographs, video, and results from Adaptive Paddling Workshops utilizing rafts as their paddlecraft in 2018. Following the classroom session, we will move to the water where we will have an opportunity to view demonstrations of seating adaptations, rescues, and further discuss risk management considerations.

Biographical Sketches: Marcel Bieg is the Western States Outreach Director for the ACA. With over 20 years of experience in the outdoor adventure field, Marcel holds a Graduate degree in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University along with instructor certifications from the ACA, AMGA, AIARE, LNT and ACCT. Marcel believes strongly in the strength of diversity and inclusion and seeks ways to facilitate teaching in unique and mind-expanding ways. Ultimately Marcel’s goal is to have fun in education and foster the growth of passion and empathy in life. Marcel is an Adaptive Paddling Instructor Trainer and is a member of the ACA's Advanced Communications Curriculum Development Work-Group.

Pauline Halstead - Don't Break Your Back to Go Kayaking This presentation will explore the physical and emotional aspects of kayaking with SCI. The barriers to kayaking are obviously physical but there are emotional barriers. Pauline’s 1.5-hour presentation will cover how to create a positive kayaking experience.

Dawn Callan - Paddle Canada's National Adaptive Paddling Program This presentation will describe Paddle Canada's new national adaptive paddling program. The presentation will be given near the end of Saturday night’s barbeque dinner. After the presentation Dawn will join presenting ACA Instructor Trainers for a round-table discussion and question and answer session.

Dawn is a former Rehabilitation Practitioner with a background in Behavioral Sciences, curriculum design, writing, and counselling.

Joe Moore – When should we say "no"? - Understanding Limitations to Safe Participation – Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) and the ADA Integration Mandate

Understanding Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) is essential for safe operation of any adaptive sports program.

EEC protect both the instructor and the program from discrimination lawsuits. EEC also create a risk management baseline for decision-making. Participants in this 1.5-hour interactive discussion will learn what EEC are, where EEC come from, how EEC protect us, and the unintended consequences if we fail to strictly apply EEC. Presentation 2: Pre-Summit ACA Adaptive Paddling Workshop. Separate registration from the AP Summit. Joe will be joined by Anne Wessman, Kevin Carr, Marcel Beig, & Nancy Uschold.

At the core of the ACA Adaptive Program, Adaptive Paddling Workshops (APWs) provide the information necessary to seamlessly integrate individuals with physical disabilities into outdoor recreation programs in the context of paddlesports. APWs focus on five key topics: (1) Language, Etiquette and Interaction, (2) The Legal Context, (3) Cultivating Seamless Integration, (4) Adaptive Outfitting Concepts & Goals, and (5) Mechanics of Adaptive Outfitting for Paddlesports.

The 2.5-day APW will involve hands-on learning in both the classroom and in calm, protected waters and will focus on successfully incorporating paddlers with disabilities resulting from SCI into fully integrated, post-therapeutic, paddlesports programs. ACA Instructors will receive the ACA Adaptive Paddling Endorsement upon successful completion. Anyone without Instructor Certification can earn a Certificate of Completion. This Endorsement can apply one time as an ACA Level 1 & 2 Instructor Certification Update.

Biographical Sketch: Joe Moore learned to sea kayak on a NOLS semester in 1990. Since then he has taught skills and led personal and professional day trips and expeditions from Alaska to Belize, from Baja to Maine. Joe joined the ACA as a member in 2011 and quickly earned Instructor Certifications in coastal kayak and SUP. Joe became an ACA Adaptive Paddling Instructor Trainer in 2012 and advanced to Instructor Trainer Educator in 2018. Joe served as the ACA National Education & Outreach Manager as well as ACA Staff Liaison to the Adaptive Paddling Committee 2013 through 2014. Joe founded the nonprofit Adaptive Expeditions in 2015 and continues to lead adaptive sport trainings at the national level. Joe designed and continues to lead the ACA's Advanced Communications Curriculum Development Work-Group, and Joe was Chair of the 2014 AP Summit in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as well as this second ACA AP Summit in Weeki Wachee, Florida.

Joan Arnold, Angela Meyer, & Meghan Overton - Kayaking Instruction for People with Traumatic Brain Injury and other Neurological Disorders

This presentation will provide instructors with tools and knowledge to successfully instruct people who have TBI and other neurological disorders. Biographic Sketch: Joan Arnold, Angela Meyer, and Meghan Overton are the adaptive paddling leadership for TAASC: The Adaptive Adventure Sports Coalition in Central Ohio. Joan is an ACA Level I Kayak Instructor with Adaptive Paddling Endorsement. She has 39 years of experience in disability services and twenty-four years of adaptive kayaking experience with a focus on teaching kayaking to persons with cognitive and intellectual developmental disabilities. Angela is an ACA Level II River Essentials Kayak Instructor with Adaptive Paddling Instructor Trainer. Angela is an Occupational Therapist and Assistive Technology Professional with 24 years of working experience. Meghan Overton has an M.S. in education and holds a Level 1 ACA Instructor Certification with the Adaptive Paddling Endorsement.

William L Hall III (Wes) & Lora Woodward - Quick Start to Instructing Paddlers with Visual Impairment Did you ever wonder if you have the skills to teach paddling to a person with a visual impairment? You may be surprised to learn that your existing ACA Instructor Certification training has already prepared you for the basics.

We will review basic information about Visual Impairment, proper etiquette, and methods you can use to adjust your teaching technique. In the classroom we will explore methods and general information that will better prepare you to teach people with a visual impairment and create a more seamless integration for paddlesport instruction.

The classroom session will be followed up with a 1-hour on-water experiential application of classroom materials.

Biographical Sketch: Wes Hall is Director of Programs at Bridge II Sports where he coordinates and leads adaptive sports programs for people with physical disabilities. Wes is an ACA Level 2 Kayak Instructor with the Adaptive Paddling Endorsement. Wes formerly held a British Canoe Union 3 Star Kayak Award, Rescue Award, and Level 2 Coaching Award. Wes is a member of the ACA's Advanced Communications Curriculum Development Work-Group. Lora Woodward has been working in the outdoor recreation industry for the past 16 years. While Program Director for Venture Outdoors, she helped establish the nonprofit's adaptive paddling initiative. She is an ACA Level 3 Coastal Kayaking Instructor with Adaptive Paddling Endorsement. Lora is the founder of Coach Outdoors, a Massachusetts-based coaching and consulting business that helps clients harness the transformative power of the outdoors to enact strategic change.

Nancy Uschold - Customizing Instruction for Communication Differences By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to plan and implement instructional strategies for individuals with communication differences. Focus will be on differences in perception as well as the ability to use verbal and non-verbal language effectively and efficiently.

Biographical Sketch: Nancy Uschold’s background as a physical therapist and new found passion for kayaking merged immediately when she bought a kayak in 1993. She worked several summers at a therapy camp for people with disabilities, and in 1993 the camp director became interested in including kayaking. In the following years, her love of paddling and instructing grew while developing the camp’s kayak program. She is an ACA Adaptive Paddling Instructor Trainer as well as an L3 Coastal Kayak IT and L4 Coastal Kayak Instructor. Terri Everett - Paddling with the Visually Impaired Participants will be involved in classroom instruction where they learn the basics of sighted guide, common eye conditions and how those conditions effect a person’s functional ability. Following the classroom session we will get on the water and take turns being the guide and being the "visually impaired person". Use of blindfolds and vision simulators will be incorporated in the on-water activities.

Biographical Sketch: Terri Everett is currently the Blind Rehabilitation Outpatient Specialist (BROS) for the Kernersville, NC Department of Veteran Affairs. Ms. Everett has 35 years of experience with the visually impaired from age pre-K through late adulthood. Ms. Everett served as a rehabilitation teacher, low vision therapist, teacher for the visually impaired, special education administrator, and school administrator. Ms. Everett is a Team River Runner local chapter coordinator. Ms. Everett is a devoted mother of two daughters, age 25 and 21, who she enjoys immensely as she travels to Washington DC and Appalachian State University to visit, respectively.
