Chinese Proverb, “Tell me and I’ll forget.

Show me and I may remember.

Involve me and I’ll understand,” helps me to recall that AEG’s most important asset is our interconnection.

Professional AEG Activity

AEG Chapters No other geologic organization with the breadth of AEG, of which I am aware, has regular, local meetings.

This is an important strength for our members. Chapter officers provide a forum for both applied geology speakers and sponsors. All members can be involved in chapter meetings, if you avail yourselves of the opportunity. The camaraderie, networking, and exchange of applied geologic information are waiting for your involvement. If you have not been to a chapter meeting in a while, consider attending more often and perhaps bring a coworker who has not yet joined. Not only will you be welcomed back, you will renew the fun we share together.

For some members there may be no nearby chapter— presently. Have you considered starting a new chapter? There are no longer any geographic restrictions to developing new chapters. Eight members, a chairperson and a treasurer are really the only membership requirements needed. Contact AEG Headquarters (HQ) for support and info on starting a chapter in your area.

AEG Meetings Annual Meetings are AEG’s premier business event. AEG Forums (at least two of which are upcoming) are topical meetings, which may have a geographic perspective. Chapter Conferences and Field Trips offer insight to local applied geology.

Investigate attending these meetings, as your involvement could be very beneficial to your office, your personal advancement, and your knowledge base.

The 2018 Annual Meeting (AM). The September 2018 AM is truly special and will be held in San Francisco, CA, in conjunction with the International Association of Engineering Geology’s (IAEG’s) Congress, which is held every fourth year. IAEG’s involvement brings an international flair to our AM. Registration includes attendance at the four days of technical sessions as well as many extras: two new Cities of the World papers, and approximately 150 full papers of presentations, along with all the meeting’s abstracts for oral and poster presentations will be provided to attendees on a flash drive; an included Wednesday Field Trip of the attendees’ choice; two daily, internationally-recognized Keynote Speakers; three Poster Sessions’ Happy Hours; special events for younger applied geologists and attending students; and, the standard benefits of AMs—an Ice-Breaker and Exhibitors’ Luncheon, both without added cost, as well as other events. Consider being involved with this great AM; you will be happy you attended! More detailed information on the 2018 AM begins on page 15 in this AEG News.

Our journal, cooperatively published with the Environmental & Engineering Geology Division of GSA, provides an important reference for applied geology. We communicate via the AEG News, the weekly Insider, and emails. Still a great deal occurs within our technical and operational committees. Your involvement in a committee could provide some leadership skills, greater knowledge of a topic, new friendships, and service to a segment within AEG. Balloting from the Board of Directors (BoD). The recent BoD Meeting had several important matters for members. I hope that you have learned of those issues through your Regional Director (RD). Please vote on the BoD approved issues. The coming ballot, possibly already received, includes nominated AEG Officers, perhaps your RD’s candidates (four of the eleven regions have elections), and AEG Bylaws’ amendments. Voting is an easy task and is a very important duty for AEG. Licensure. AEG supports the current Geologic Registration in 30 US states. The Licensure Committee leads our defense of the profession in those 30 states when troublesome legislation arises and would like to expand registration to the remaining 20 states. Your involvement may be critical in a state that has legislative action to limit or end Geologic Registration, or in one of the 20 states where registration could be added.

AEG Membership. AEG is only as strong as our membership in size and our members’ actions. AEG provides to you an excellent return on your dues and time investment. Recognize all of AEG’s benefits and involve yourself with some of those benefits. Encourage your office mates and your professional contacts to become AEG members or to renew their membership. Bring a non-member to a Chapter Meeting for some camaraderie, networking and fun.

AEG – Moving Forward with an Updated Strategic Plan David F. Fenster, AEG 2017–18 Vice-President

ur mission states “The Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG) contributes to its members’ professional success and the public welfare by providing leadership, advocacy, and applied research in environmental and engineering geology.” We’ve made progress in the past few years, but to move further ahead in accomplishing this mission the Board of Directors participated in a Strategic Planning & Leadership Workshop during the mid-year board meeting. The workshop was conducted on May 4–5, 2018, in Lexington, KY, at the offices of AMR, our new headquarters. The plan outlined below is evolving and we will communicate more specific goals and tactics to accomplish these goals as they mature.

Expand Opportunities to Communicate A major goal coming out of the workshop is to improve the AEG experience for our members and to communicate it effectively, encouraging prospective members to join. This will entail the development of a comprehensive, focused communication plan that is comprised of both internal and external components. An important aspect of the plan is to redesign our AEG website with a homepage that addresses the interests of members, students and non-members. This will include providing chapters with a consistent website template. One objective is to communicate internally in a coherent and effective way. We will be looking at incorporating technology into our website that allows us to streamline our membership renewal process and event registration.

We’ll be centralizing our contact data in a way that will track student members and prospective members. Importantly, we’ll update and distribute templates for regional and chapter reports. Our external communication plan will focus on enhancing our networking and legislative tracking with respect to state licensure, which will enable AEG to be more proactive and visible rather than reactive.

Promote and Advance the Value of Applied Geology We’ve identified three objectives related to this goal.

The first is to improve the utility and visibility of the AEG professional network. Members have identified an important aspect of this network is theselfless sharing of technical experience and expertise. One tactic to attain this goal will be to enhance chapter connections to universities and student chapters. Improved websites will provide opportunities for job postings and other information for the benefit of members. A second objective is to continue to provide professional development opportunities. A third outward-looking objective is to advocate the profession through public outreach. We will further develop a technical expert database based on information already obtained by the Advocacy Committee. This committee has developed templates that can be enhanced for use by chapters to communicate with their legislatures and the media. We are already expanding our organizational contacts with other professional organizations.

Provide Applied Geology Professionals a Place to Thrive Personally and Professionally For me, this started at the old Section (new Chapter) level.

Our objective is to provide benefits designed around members’ needs, values, and expectations. While developing new friendships and a professional network meet some of those needs, we need to focus on meeting member expectations.

It’s been a while since we conducted a “Needs Survey” and while some of those needs have been addressed, others have changed or have not been satisfied. Our Governance Committee has recently distributed satisfaction surveys to Chapter Chairs, Regional Directors, and Headquarters (HQ).

We are considering developing a member satisfaction and needs assessment survey that will drive decisions on member benefits and will tell us where we are succeeding and where we need to improve.

The Board of Directors and HQ want to do everything practical to make AEG the organization to which applied geologists feel they must belong. We want you to feel compelled to attend the next chapter meeting, short course, field trip, annual meeting, or other events. In the future, we’ll need your input to tell us what we need to do to accomplish these strategic goals.

This is your AEG and we want to make it even better.

HEADER NEWS OFHERE THE ASSOCIATION – TREASURER’S REPORT

Solid Ground: Building AEG for the Future Cynthia Palomares, PG, PE, AEG 2017–18 Treasurer

A

EG continues its trend of improving the fiscal foundation of the Association. The reasons for the Association’s continued fiscal success include income from Professional Forums, organic growth of the Treasurer’s Reserve, gradual accumulation of Legislative Fund assets, and successful Annual Meetings.

AEG is on solid ground fiscally, thanks to the many tireless volunteers that have helped the Association move forward. AEG’s current fiscal assets of $1,026,760 (as of May 31, 2018) consist of monies held in three bank accounts and a separate investment account. These bank accounts are for Operations, Annual Meeting, and Licensure funds. In addition, the Treasurer’s Reserve is held in a Fidelity Investment account. New bank accounts have been opened near the current Association Management location in Lexington, Kentucky. The former bank accounts located in Ohio have been closed. The Treasurer’s Reserve balance is $348, 947 as of May 31, 2018.

The upcoming 2018 Annual Meeting is a joint venture between AEG and IAEG. Because of the international appeal and accessibility, the meeting location that has been selected is San Francisco, which has higher venue costs than prior Annual Meeting locations. In addition, a different format for this meeting (four days of technical presentations, and an

included Wednesday field course and evening poster sessions (plus the usual events) will cause registration costs to be higher than other Annual Meetings.

The 2018 Annual Meeting revenue so far this year is on track and totals $392,272 for the year to date, compared with the annual budget of $1,251,270. Revenue includes registrations, special event, exhibit, and sponsorship income, as well as start-up funding to be returned following the conference. As of May 31, 2018, full meeting registrants are at 314 attendees. To break even, 400 meeting registrants are needed, but with 1,000 attendees expected to register, a larger surplus than prior annual meetings in anticipated. Of course, with an undertaking of this size there is also a higher risk of a shortfall.

Membership revenue for 2018 is $206,785 as of May 31, 2018, compared with the annual budget of $220,715. Revenues are tracking ahead of the same time last year, although counts are slightly below last year, primarily in unpaid categories. Total membership as of May 31, 2018, is 1,736, compared to 1,768 at this same time last year. The Executive Council (EC) and Headquarters are currently working on a membership plan to recruit new members and also to improve retaining existing members, and hopefully reverse this trend.

Mid-Year Board Meeting Leadership Workshop William Godwin, AEG 2017–18 Secretary

EG’s new Association Management firm, AMR, sponsored a two-day workshop during the Mid-Year Board Meeting in their Lexington, Kentucky, headquarters.

AEG Vice President Dave Fenster reports in this edition of the News on the first day of the workshop, which focused on updates to the AEG Strategic Plan. The second day of the workshop covered leadership.

AMR’s Brian Riggs was the facilitator for both sessions.

Riggs asked the Board of Directors (BOD) what constitutes a good leader in non-profit space, specifically, what qualities are important. The replies from the BOD included: n Empathy

n Enthusiasm

n Approachable

We then discussed what good governance means and what principles a Board should follow. “Governance” means the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented (or not implemented). Riggs used a version of the graphic shown below.

A common pitfall with Boards of Directors is they tend to want to both govern and manage. Specific to AEG, in my opinion, the purpose of an association manager is to manage the day-to-day operations on behalf of the Association. They have the tools, resources, and time to do the heavy lifting. The purpose of the Board is to be a visionary for the success of the Association and to be a conduit for the voice of individual members and Chapters, and most importantly, to NOT July 2018

manage the day-to-day. The graphic below shows the opposing (or offsetting forces) that make the AEG wheel turn and how there needs to be a flexible yet distinctive division between the two entities. Clearly if the Board shifts towards the management end then the wheel does not turn.

Management “Manages” Riggs presented a case study from the National Association of State Chief Information Officers where they developed a Model of Efficiency.

The three main factors for their success were: n Heavily invest in Board Orientation and Training n Implement decision-making based on a Strategic Plan, and n Engage the Board with HQ staff to establish relationships and provide focused funding AEG is now following and refocusing on these same three factors.

I saw great benefits from this workshop in that it provided your AEG Board a chance to reflect on their purpose and develop the impetus to engage with AMR to maintain a forward path to success. It also gave your Executive Council a chance to refocus some of their vision. I think that most of the concepts presented at the workshop transcend to other institutions and professional groups, and more importantly at the AEG Chapter or Committee level. I believe that AEG members have an opportunity and an obligation to step up into leadership roles knowing that there is support and a vision within AEG.

New Association Manager Named at AEG Headquarters

he AEG Board of Directors is happy to welcome Kristy Howard as the new Association Manager.

DeLaine Bender has been faithfully serving AEG as the Interim Association Manager during the transition period and is quickly helping Kristy get up to speed on the current practices and procedures of the association.

Kristy brings eight years of association management experience to AEG and is excited to jump in and get started. She has significant experience working with websites and online collaboration communities, leading member engagement initiatives and communications, supporting regional councils and committees, coordinating awards programs, assisting with association digital branding, and working with member data to aid in decisionmaking. Kristy officially began her new role with AEG in May.

Mid-year Board Meeting Also in May, AMR hosted this year’s Midyear Board Meeting and Strategic Planning Session with AEG leadership and staff at headquarters in Lexington, KY. Facilitator Brian Riggs led the group through the process of identifying key areas of focus over the next few years which include communication, profession and membership. As an association, AEG is dedicating to invest additional time and resources to support these areas by setting key goals to improve the AEG experience and communicate it effectively, to promote and advance the value of applied geology and to provide applied geology professionals a place to thrive personally and professionally. AEG leadership and staff will solidify the objectives necessary to support these goals and AEG Association Manager Kristy Howard will share more details on how this strategic plan will be implemented in the months to come.

61st Annual AEG Meeting Silent Auction Benefiting The Cornerstone Fund

he Cornerstone Fund is this year’s designated beneficiary of the Silent Auction that will take place at the 61st Annual AEG Meeting in San Francisco. Most, if not all, AEG members can attribute their successes in their careers to their schooling and the professors/mentors they had in engineering geology and geological engineering. Unfortunately, when these great professors/mentors retire, many universities and colleges are not replacing personnel and are even eliminating courses. Also, courses can be eliminated during budget cuts.

These two cases are examples of how the Foundation’s Cornerstone Fund can help keep engineering geology and geological engineering courses going strong.

The Cornerstone Fund’s Charter was approved by the AEG Foundation’s Board of Directors on September 10, 2013. The fund supports programs that teach engineering geology and geological engineering. The goals of the fund include supporting programs that prepare students to qualify and practice as licensed professionals in engineering geology and supporting doctoral level programs to prepare and train professors to teach these courses at colleges and universities.

Tunneling Symposium at AEG Annual Meeting/XIII IAEG Congress – September 15–23, 2018 A tunneling symposium will be one of the early events at the 61st AEG Annual Meeting/13th IAEG Congress to be held in San Francisco. The symposium will consist of three sessions: Monday afternoon (Technical Session #6 on September 17th) and Tuesday morning & afternoon (Technical Sessions #14 and #22 on September 18th) and will include over 20 presentations by AEG and IAEG members on the following topics: soft ground and mixed face tunnel excavation, rock mass and excavation behavior predictions, geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects, and predictive modeling for underground conditions.

The symposium will open on Monday with a keynote presentation about the life and times of Dr. Don U. Deere, a highly respected pioneering geotechnical engineer and engineering geologist who passed away on January 14, 2018.

Dr. Deere was an expert on tunneling, dam building and design, and construction of large underground spaces. In 1989, he was appointed by President Reagan as Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. In addition, Dr. Deere received numerous distinctions throughout his career including being elected to both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Deere’s work took him around the world and he served as an engineering and geology professor at several universities and founded international consulting firms in Puerto Rico and Florida. Dr. Deere’s son, Don W. Deere, also a practicing engineering geologist, will present the keynote speech.

The second day of the symposium will open with a keynote presentation on Engineering Geology as Applied to Tunneling Projects by Dr. Gary Brierley and will serve to forward the experience and vision of Dr. Deere in the more recent past and the future.

We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting and at this exciting and interesting tunnel symposium.

Advocacy Committee

The bulk of the advocacy and outreach work achieved within each nomination should have been completed within the past three years.Nominations that have been previously submitted are welcome to submit in future years.

Self-nominations are encouraged.

Each nomination should include the name, mailing address, email address, phone number, and affiliation for the nominee.

There is no specific form needed. In the case of a group nomination, the main point-of-contact will be shown with full information listed above, as well as the name, affiliation, and email address for everyone in the group.

The nomination will also include a short essay or listing of the nominee’s efforts and their outcomes. The essay or listing may not exceed 300 words. Up to three photographs are welcome, but not required. Photo captions will be limited to 20 words each, and do not count toward the 300-word limit.

At its discretions, the AEG Advocacy Committee has the option to not make an AEG Advocacy Award in any year. An engraved plaque and a small honorarium will be awarded to the AEG Advocacy Award winner at the AEG Annual Banquet.

The recipient of the AEG Advocacy Award, as well as other nominees, may have their nominations included in one or more articles in the AEG News and/or the AEG Insider. In future years, previous winners will not be eligible for three years after their award.

The deadline for nominations for the 2018 AEG Advocacy Award is July 31st.

Coastal Hazards Forum 2019:

Engulfing January 7–10 theCoast

Dauphin Island, Alabama Sea Lab Campus

Storms, tsunamis, and rising sea levels threaten U.S. coastal communities, ecosystems, and economies. Much of the nation’s existing coastal infrastructure must be adapted to expected future conditions or relocated away from hazards. New coastal development and post-storm reconstruction must be planned, sited, and maintained with coastal geologic hazards clearly in mind.

The Coastal Hazards Technical Working Group of AEG is hosting its first Coastal Hazards Professional Forum at Dauphin Island Sea Lab and is currently accepting abstracts for presentations at this three-day forum event. The forum includes a one full-day and two half-day sessions devoted to technical and regulatory policy issues plus a half-day field trip around the barrier beach island, as well as an optional half-day tour of the marine laboratory facilities. Keynote speakers, student poster sessions, exhibitor displays, and a banquet will be available to attendees.

Potential session topics are anticipated to include: Sea Level Rise & Impact on Addressing Coastal Emergencies

The forum will offer the opportunity to discuss current shoreline protection methods, coastal hazard policies, and project planning with increased attention to sea level change resiliency and long term public use regulations in the geologic environment.

Abstracts Due by September 1, 2018 Abstracts should be submitted by September 1 and be limited to 500 words for publication in the program with abstracts.

Abstract submissions will be reviewed and selected for presentation at the forum by the Coastal Hazards Technical Working Group. Notification of acceptance/rejection will be provided via e-mail by November 1, 2018.

first fell in love with geology as an undergraduate student at Pomona College; my professor Rick Hazlett shared his boundless enthusiasm for geology and I was hooked! I began my career working for a small geology firm in the Los Angeles area, doing a lot of fieldwork with a side helping of GIS and graphics. I returned to school and completed my masters in Geotechnical Engineering at UC Berkeley. After working on the east coast for a few years, I returned to the San Francisco Bay Area and joined Kleinfelder and have been with them ever since (10+ years!). I feel very fortunate to work for a company that values involvement in organizations like AEG. Kleinfelder has helped me to attend many AEG Annual Meetings and has supported my volunteer efforts at the local and national level.

I first got involved with AEG when I attended the Annual Meeting in Anchorage. What started as a great excuse to visit Alaska (Hey, boss! I’ll learn about geology, I promise!) turned into a wonderful opportunity to network, make lifelong friends, learn valuable leadership skills, and advance our profession. I credit my AEG involvement to Sarah Kalika, our chapter’s past chair and one of the most tireless volunteers in the organization.

Sarah, who I knew as a former Kleinfelder colleague, saw me in Anchorage and invited me to a local AEG meeting so we could reconnect. Little did I know she was putting me on the path to becoming a local and national leader in the organization.

My most treasured mentor is my former boss and good friend, Craig Hall, who believed in my abilities long before I believed in myself. Craig gave me ample responsibilities and training early in my career, and I knew he always cared about me as a person, not just an employee. We bonded over many after-work pints (a rarity these days, as I have two young kids!) and we forged a strong friendship working on large, complex and stressful levee and dam removal projects. To this day, I call him for career advice or just to chat about our awesome projects and clients.

My advice to women starting a career in geology is to embrace the crazy hours and schedules, and dive into fieldwork with both feet.

It’s not always fun: you’ll have early mornings, blisteringly hot or freezing cold days outdoors when you long to be in your cozy 12

bed, and you’ll be bone tired at the end of those long weeks.

But in the long run, you’re forming amazing memories and learning important lessons that will serve you in your career for decades to come. My other advice is that if you want something—a raise, a promotion, that old used-up drill bit the driller’s tossing in his truck, a chance to travel to another state to work on a cool project—don’t be afraid to ask!

I was receiving several of these a day, and finally came up with an idea: turn it around and ask them to sponsor a meeting of your local AEG Chapter.

It’s a win-win. The chapter gets a little revenue, and the sponsor gets legitimate visibility in front of potential clients.

I have been trying this for about two months and have nailed down at least one company who has already paid the St. Louis Chapter $300 for the privilege of sponsoring one of our monthly AEG meetings. At least one other outfit tired of my identical auto-replies to them, has taken me off their blast marketing list—and that works, too!

Geologists’ Day – September 20th

G

Recognizes the Value of Professional Practice

eologists usually aren’t ones to toot their own horns. Most prefer to avoid spotlights and leave the public eye on others. But with apologies to Bob Dylan, “the times, they are a-changing.” It is time for geologists to wake up and speak up.

Now, there are efforts to eliminate geologists’ professional registration in several states and several other states narrowly missed similar attempts recently. These de-licensing efforts were started by well-funded, conservative operatives who don’t understand or don’t care about the value of geologists’ work. They somehow believe that essentially anyone can do it. They believe that the professional registration process is a government intrusion that prevents people from gainful employment despite their potential to cause harm by their lack of qualifications.

Science, in general, is being dismissed from many corners.

Climate-change deniers, creationists, anti-vaxxers, and many others somehow confuse their own incorrect scientific opinions with proven scientific facts.

We’re late, but not too late; it is well past time that we geologists begin to advocate for our profession and we have some catching-up to do.

This year, and every year in the future, please recognize Geologists’ Day on September 20th. This is different from Earth Science Week, recognized annually in October, an effort to engage K–12 educators and provide lesson materials.

Geologists’ Day is an effort to raise awareness of the value of individual geologists and their essential work Write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Send a press release to your local television, radio, or newspaper (samples will be available from AEG). Post a Facebook or Instagram message. Give a presentation to the Rotary Club.

Wear a button. Lead a local outreach field trip. Have a celebratory lunch at your workplace. Send a tweet. Talk it up to your clients. Discuss it over a beer with friends.

Geologists Day is September 20th. Advocate for your profession. If you don’t, who will?

Remembering Frank Kresse

F

rank C. Kresse (1931–2018) enjoyed a wide-ranging career as an engineering geologist and hydrogeologist. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley in 1956, he worked for the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), where he participated in initial routing studies for the California Aqueduct and moved on to supervise and mentor many early-career engineering geologists. He left DWR in 1969 to join the consulting firm of Wahler Associates and in 1976 moved on to Harding Lawson Associates, where he stayed until retirement in 1991. He was active in private consulting in retirement, and also served on the Finance Committee of the AEG Foundation.

Frank’s service on the DWR team that investigated the December 14, 1963, Baldwin Hills (Los Angeles area) Dam failure strengthened his resolve “to get it right” in all of his earth dam exploration work.

Frank was an active member of AEG. Throughout his professional life, he regularly attended AEG meetings, both local and national, where he presented papers and chaired sessions.

He was a strong supporter of AEG, bringing in new members and supporting his employees in their professional association involvement. Frank served on and chaired working groups of professionals who advised the California licensure board for geologists and geophysicists. He was also a member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the Geological Society of America.

Here are some personal recollections of some who worked for and with Frank Kresse: I joined Wahler Associates of Palo Alto, California, in 1969. I was hired by Bill Wahler during one of his trips to Chile. I remember working under Frank on several dam site investigations in California and New Mexico. We also worked on the stability investigation of Tailings dam and several of their failures throughout the Southwestern United States, as well as on the US Bureau of Mines-sponsored emergency investigation of the stability of coal waste embankments in the Appalachian region which was prompted by the disastrous failure of a coal waste embankment in Buffalo Creek, West Virginia, in 1972. Frank’s guidance, encouragement, and his warmth as a supportive supervisor, together with his sense of humor and solid technical knowledge, were fundamental in the development of my career. We collaborated as well on international projects, such as the Arenal dam site exploration in 1973 at the base of the active Arenal volcano in Costa Rica, which was started shortly after a M6.5 earthquake greatly damaged the immediate area. In hydrogeology, we worked on the 1974 groundwater supply investigation for the city of Santo Domingo, Costa Rica. We shared lots of fun there, as 14

often Frank needed my assistance with the Spanish language in these countries.

Leonardo Alvarez, PG, CEG. On a fine October day of 1964, I reported to Frank as a new hire Junior Engineering Geologist at the Palmdale, California, Design and Construction office of the California Department of Water Resources (DWR). This was my first full-time professional job after graduation (and a little postgraduate classwork that brought my BA degree up to BS level). The next day, Frank took me to Cedar Springs Dam site, where the Mohave River leaves the north edge of the San Bernardino Mountains and where the site engineering geologist (Jack B. Jacks) had just exposed an active fault in a bulldozer trench in the foundation footprint of the proposed dam. What a great introduction to engineering geology! Map what you can on the surface and then use a bulldozer, dragline, or backhoe trenches to really see what was in the subsurface. Then use an NX core drilling rig to find out what is happening at great depth. Months later, Frank found it necessary to teach me, rather strictly, how to write an engineering geology design memorandum so engineers could understand and apply my geologic information. Over the next four years, whenever I was doing office work and there was an AEG Southern California Section meeting in downtown Los Angeles, Frank would drive a carload of us to and from the meeting. He made it hard to say “no” to the opportunity, and we learned a lot about engineering geology and engineering geologists at those meetings.

Robert E. Tepel, PG, CEG Frank became a part of my professional life early in 1964 when, upon completion of his role in the investigation of the Baldwin Hills Dam failure, he was assigned to the DWR office in Palmdale. (I had been in Palmdale since 1962, hired as a Junior Engineering Geologist by DWR.) Frank became my supervisor, but he was much more. He was, from the outset, a mentor who raised the level of our professional performance.

Expectations about information to be gained from field investigation were clear—get it right. Frank’s review of a report was rigorous, fair, and a learning experience, reminding me of a certain professor at our shared alma mater. Writing skills improved from the process. The learning/mentoring process continued at Wahler Associates where we shared experiences at Arenal Dam and La Cueva Dam in Costa Rica.

Geology of San Francisco The City of San Francisco is located at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula on the west edge of the North American Plate, within the San Andreas transform boundary zone with the adjacent Pacific Plate. The sharp topography and maritime surroundings of San Francisco combine with the unique California climate to produce a number of extremely varied microclimates within its 46 square miles. California’s location in the middle latitudes and on the west coast of the North American continent, places it in the relatively rare Mediterranean (Etesian) type climate. This type of climate type is generally characterized by moist mild winters and dry summers. San Francisco’s climate is further modified by the location of the City on the northern end of a peninsula, surrounded on three sides by the relatively cool waters of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.

Every few years, San Francisco receives no rain in September. The rainiest Septembers get at least 0.2 inches (6 mm). The relative humidity in San Francisco during September usually peaks at 83 percent in the morning then drops to 53 percent by early afternoon. About once a decade, San Francisco receives as much as an inch (25 mm) of rain in one day during September due to a rare thunderstorm.

The upshot is to pack for dressing in layers, and though a rain jacket won’t likely be necessary, it might not hurt to bring a water-resistant shell.

September is San Francisco’s hottest month overall, with daytime temperature peaking from the 19th to 29th at 70.4°F (21.3°C). The warmest nights run from late August through early September when the low averages 55.3°F (12.9°C).

Nearly every day in September warms to over 60°F (16°C) in San Francisco, but can reach into the 80s°F (over 27°C).

Temperatures above 90°F (32°C) are most likely to occur during September, yet it doesn’t get that hot every year. Usually the thermometer dips to 60°F (16°C) or below almost every night this month.

Field Course 1 Tracing the Borders of the Salinian Block, from the Creeping San Andreas Fault to the Big Sur Coastline

Preserve, followed by three stops on the Big Sur coastline to look at fault exposures, a tombolo and the rockfall shed and viaduct at Pitikins curve. Returning to the Carmel for the second night, we begin Day Three with a trip to the winegrowing region around Hollister. We will observe examples of the creeping segment of the San Andreas fault zone. A lunch and wine tasting stop will be made before returning to the Congress venue in San Francisco. Expect two-and-a-half full days of travel on full-size motorcoach leaving the San Francisco hotel around midday on Friday and returning Sunday evening due to the long driving distances.

Although the last glaciers in Yosemite Valley receded at the end of the Pleistocene the valley still a dynamic setting with rock falls and flooding an ongoing process and concern. The lake is also renowned for its water clarity that while still fantastic, has experienced declines due to several factors in recent times. This trip will include stops to observe and discuss many different topics of engineering geology, including faulting and seismically induced landslides, development of the basin and maintenance of infrastructure, and geologic hazards. And/if time permits, we may stop along the lower Feather River to visit and discuss flood control and levee improvement projects that have been undertaken in response to several significant floods and levee breaches that have occurred since the 1950s. Situated in the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, the Oroville Dam plays an integral role in providing water storage, flood control and power to users all across the state. This one-day trip will visit this prominent California landmark and detail the impacts of geology on the planning, design, construction and operation of this structure. We’ll also examine the role of geology on spillway erodibility during the 2017 spill events as well as review the recovery efforts to rebuild the Oroville Spillways. On the return trip back to the Bay Area, we’ll conclude with a stop in Old Sacramento to explore the city during the Gold Rush era with an opportunity to grab a quick snack/beverage. Expect a full day of travel leaving at 7:00 am and returning after 7:00 pm due to the long driving distances.

Mélanges constitute a large proportion of the Franciscan Complex (originally called the Franciscan Formation) a regional scale jumble that makes up about one third of the bedrock in the central and northern Coast Ranges of northern California. Mélanges are rock bodies, composed of complex geological mixtures of strong hard blocks within in weaker sheared matrices. The chaotic fabrics of mélange rock masses are part of the family of heterogeneous rocks known as “bimrocks” (block-in-matrix rocks), such as sheared serpentinites, fault rocks, weathered 20

The warden at the time was so worried about security that they loaded the train car onto a barge instead of unloading the prisoners from the train and moving them to a boat, as they felt he may attempt an escape or there would be trouble if he was removed from the train car prior to it reaching Alcatraz.

Many believe the waters of the SF Bay are filled with dangerous sharks. While there are sharks that live in the bay, most are small and not very dangerous. There are numerous great white sharks that live close by in the Pacific Ocean, but they rarely make their way into the bay.

It took only four years to build the Golden Gate Bridge (1933–37). The recent rebuilding of the Oakland side of the Bay Bridge took 11 years (2002–13).

It wasn’t the earthquake that did most of the damage in 1906. The fires that started after the earthquake caused about 90% of the damage to the city.

Ground shaking and surface rupture associated with this earthquake caused extensive damage to buildings, roads, and infrastructures within wine country in Napa Valley. The earthquake was unusual for both the length of surface fault rupture (12.5 km) and amount of significant afterslip from a relatively moderate magnitude event. The tour will include review of the mapped extent of the West Napa fault and 2014 rupture trace. Stops at key locations along the fault will be accompanied discussion of the impacts of fault rupture and subsequent afterslip on the built environment, how critical infrastructure was repaired, and how faults like the West Napa fault can be evaluated for seismic hazard prior to future earthquakes.

Maximum: 120 The dynamic coastline just south of San Francisco will be visited to provide guests with an overview of geologic processes currently in play including active faulting, landsliding and erosion. We will follow portions of the route of the long defunct Ocean Shore Railroad with stops at the Esplanade way bluff retreat in Pacifica, the Devils Slide and the Lantos tunnels in Pacifica, and onshore coastal bluffs at Pillar Pt. near Half Moon Bay. The tour will explain the geologic conditions associated with the offshore San Gregorio fault and how that created the world-class Mavericks surfing spot. Lastly, the tour will head inland for a stop at the Crystal Springs dam and reservoir area, situated in the San Andreas Rift Zone before returning to the Congress venue.

Join us on a walking tour of San Francisco’s Telegraph Hill for a tour of historical sites and some of the most prominent rockfall repairs in San Francisco; the tour will also include a stop in nearby North Beach for some background on the ongoing Central Subway project. The slopes of Telegraph Hill were extensively quarried during the 1800s for sandstone used for bulkheads along the nearby waterfront and for ship ballast.

With ships leaving San Francisco for ports around the globe where the ballast was offloaded to make room for cargo, Telegraph Hill has been referred to as the most widely disseminated hill on earth. We will view the old quarry slopes and recently installed rockfall protection systems. We will also view a point of interest for the Central Subway to hear about the geologic constraints and conditions associated with tunneling underneath a geologically complex and densely populated urban corridor. The walking tour will be approximately 1.5 miles round trip. The route will extend up and down historic stairways on Telegraph Hill, with a total elevation gain of approximately 300 vertical feet. Please wear comfortable footwear and clothing appropriate for an afternoon walking up and down steep terrain. We will end the tour at a local watering hole for well-earned refreshments.

Join us on a trip to visit the site of the new Calaveras Dam to observe and review the geologic conditions, hazards, and construction challenges of this Bay Area mega-project. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is constructing a new earthen dam to replace the existing 91-year-old structure situated 1,300 feet from the active Calaveras fault. Construction began in 2011 and is scheduled to be completed in late 2018. During the initial excavation of the left abutment in 2012, geologists discovered several geological hazards that impacted the schedule and cost of the project. Naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) is present on the site, and the SFPUC has implemented the nation’s largest and most comprehensive emission prevention and monitoring program ever undertaken on a construction project. The three principal NOA challenges are: 1) excavation and on-site disposal of serpentinite (the California state rock) that contains fibrous chrysotile, 2) building the dam out of on-site Franciscan Complex blueschist composed of fibrous glaucophane and winchite amphibole, and 3) dust suppression using millions of gallons of reservoir water that contains 350 million chrysotile fibers per liter. All challenges have been solved and potential health impacts mitigated through geological and mineralogical investigations, emissions measurements and air modeling, source to receptor studies of rock, soil and water media, testing of enhanced emission capture systems, and the collection and analysis of thousands of on- and off-site air samples.

Leaders: Janet Sowers and Donald Wells Maximum: 60 Ride the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system to visit classic, active-fault features. The Hayward fault is a master right-lateral strike-slip fault slicing through the highly urbanized eastern San Francisco Bay Area. Stops will include sag ponds and curb offsets in Fremont, and fault features at the University of California Berkeley campus. We will visit California Memorial Stadium, built astride the fault in 1923 and recently rebuilt to withstand ongoing fault creep and future earthquake displacement.

Expect five–six kilometers of walking.

Field Course 15 Geology of Alcatraz Leader: Bill McCormick Maximum: 50 Experience “The Rock” like you’ve never experienced it before. This trip will focus on the geology and geohazards of the infamous island as it relates to relative risk assessment for public use, prioritization of mitigation projects and the effects of sea level rise. Visit will include a look at the geologic strata and bedrock fault, as well as some recent mitigation projects. Of course, no trip to Alcatraz would be complete without a discussion of the unique history and multiple uses of the island since 1852!

Join us on a bus tour of the San Andreas fault on the upper San Francisco Peninsula. The San Andreas fault bisects the densely populated peninsula where it last ruptured during the MW7.9 San Francisco earthquake of 1906 with over 3 m of right lateral displacement. We will visit the historic Filoli Estates in Woodside, where earlier paleoseismic investigations have provided a better understanding of the late Holocene behavior and near-surface rupture characteristics. In addition, we will discuss recent work focused on a series of range front reverse faults adjacent to and east of the San Andreas fault.

These blind and emergent faults pose a potential surface rupture hazard to gas transmission pipelines and other critical lifeline infrastructure.

Take a trip through geologic time to explore the processes and events that gave rise to the beautiful and unusual scenery of Marin County’s coastline, from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Point Reyes National Seashore. This trip will focus on the unique and varied geologic history of the northern California coast and the attendant natural hazards that affect the populous San Francisco Bay Area. This trip is planned to include stops on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge with spectacular views south to San Francisco, along the Pacific coast with oceanic views of intersecting faults, at the Point Reyes National Seashore Visitors Center located on the San Andreas fault near the epicenter of the Great 1906 Earthquake, and scenic and geologically complex shoreline sites with exposures of thrust faults and Cenozoic geologic units and overview of Quaternary tectonic activity including uplifted marine terraces.

Field Course 19 West Napa Earthquake and Wine Leaders: Mike Jewett, Scott Burns, Hilary Whitney Maximum: 50 This trip will travel by bus to the famed Napa Valley wine region to view the scenery and geology along the West Napa fault, the source of a M6.0 earthquake that affected the region in August of 2014. In addition, Scott Burns will provide his expertise on the geologic controls on wine terroir as it manifests in the Napa region. Planned stops include locations of observed surface rupture along the fault in the 2014 event, possible location of open paleoseismic trenches for fault evaluation studies, and wine tasting.

Field Course 18 Black Diamond Mines and Keller Canyon Landfill Leader: Raymond Sullivan, Morgan Sullivan, Pat Dedmon Maximum: 50 The field trip setting is the north flanks of Mount Diablo. The scenic hills make up of one of the most complete Tertiary sections in the Coast Ranges and dip steeply away from this central structure. The Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is located on the flanks of the mountain and is the type section for many of the formations. In the 19th century the area was the site of the largest coalfield in California and in the following century the mining activity reverted to underground sand mining. The morning will be spent on a guided geologic tour of the underground mine works, much of which is not accessible to the general public. After lunch at the July 2018

Field Course 20 Environmental Geology in the San Francisco Presidio

Field Course 21 Visit to the Syar Lake Herman Aggregate Quarry in Vallejo

Leader: George Ford Maximum: 50 Between 1999 and 2014, the Presidio Trust spent nearly $150 million to clean up environmental hazards left behind after the US Army’s 150-year tenure at the Presidio of San Francisco. The work included removal of landfills, capping of other landfills, removal of hundreds of underground storage tanks, several gas stations, firing ranges and cleanup of lead-contaminated soil. On this trip we will visit major landfall sites, firing range cleanup areas, forest restoration sites and other historic features of the Presidio. Key stops will include a little-known Golden Gate Bridge overlook where over 10,000 tons of refuse were removed from coastal bluffs, a capped landfill and an area where a landfill was removed to restore a native spring used by early settlers.

After a scenic lunch stop the trip will then head to the North side of the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands for world-class views of San Francisco.

The Lake Herman Quarry, located near Vallejo, Solano County, is one of the largest suppliers of construction grade rock products in the area. The quality, type, and sizes of material are found only in a few areas of Northern California. Included among these are various sizes of mineral aggregate for asphaltic paving materials, rip rap, drain rock, aggregate subbase, aggregate base, permeable base, backfill and various sizes of other crushed aggregate products. This special trip is being arranged for the IAEG Aggregate Commission and will include a lunch stop at the Lake Herman Recreation Area just down the road from the quarry. Travel by bus will also provide opportunities for the group to view and discuss roadside geology and other sites of geologic interest along the route.

Special requirements for safety gear will be provided to paid registrants by the trip leaders.

This is an introductory geochemistry course for scientists and engineers working in the field of groundwater site characterization, contamination, and remediation. It is designed to provide basic information on geochemistry that is necessary to understand natural and contaminated systems and how the composition of groundwater evolves along its flowpath in the subsurface. Geochemical processes that will be described and discussed include solution complexation reactions, solution/gas interactions, mineral dissolution/precipitation, oxidation/reduction, and adsorption/desorption. Data collection, presentation, and interpretation of results will be discussed. Examples that illustrate the concepts are described throughout the class. At the end of this one-day class, attendees will have a better understanding of the types of geochemical processes that affect groundwater composition, the importance of collecting sufficient data to understand site-specific geochemical systems, and what the data they have collected mean from the standpoint of contaminant occurrence and mobility.

Instructor Bill Deutsch holds a BS and MS in geological sciences from the University of Washington, Seattle. He has worked at Battelle/Pacific Northwest National Lab in applied research for 13 years and as a consultant for 17 years with WoodwardClyde/URS and Jacobs Engineering. For the past 5 years, he has been an independent consultant specializing in groundwater geochemistry. His project experience includes environmental assessments and investigations of landfills, refineries, pesticides plants, military bases, mines and mills, federal weapons facilities and a wide variety of additional industrial sites. In addition, he has participated in remedial designs of sites contaminated with metals, radionuclides, pesticides, solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons and ordnance compounds. Since 1985, Deutsch has instructed more than 150 courses on groundwater geochemistry and geochemical modeling. He is the author of Groundwater Geochemistry, published by CRC Press, and is a principal scientist at Geochemistry Services LLC.

High quality data, low cost per data, and rapid delivery are primary reasons for using deploying drones to collect geoscientific data for environmental site characterization, resource exploration, and management of infrastructure development and resource extraction projects. This one day short course is designed for engineers and scientists seeking practical knowledge on how to integrate drone enabled photogrammetry, lidar, remote sensing, and geophysical mapping into their project workflows. In addition, there will be a segment on identifying and reducing the risks associated with drone flight operations.

Several industry experts will present case histories on the practical application of drones to engineering and environmental problems. The course wraps up with open question and answer session presentations immediately following presentations by several UAS services companies.

Instructor Ronald S. Bell is a consulting geophysicist with more than 35 years of experience in the application of ground and airborne geophysical methods to environmental subsurface characterization, groundwater resource investigations, and the exploration for mineral, hydrocarbon, and geothermal resources. In 2016, Bell taught a webinar and two short courses on the integration of drones into the engineering and environmental workflows. In addition, he has been an invited speaker at numerous professional association meetings and several universities on the application of small UAS to resource exploration, environmental site characterization, and subsurface infrastructure detection and delineation. Bell is President of International Geophysical Services, LLC, a geophysical consulting and services firm based in Lakewood, CO providing ground geophysical data acquisition as well as UAS photogrammetry, thermal infrared imaging, and magnetometry services. In 2014, he formed Aerobotic Geophysical Systems, LLC, to develop innovative UAS solutions for subsurface characterization. Bell holds a BS in Applied Physics from Michigan Technological University.

There are ornate temples, including the landmark Tien How, as well as the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum. We will walk to a nearby shuttle stop to take the free National Park Service shuttle to the Presidio Visitor Center. The land was first occupied by the Ohlone people thousands of years ago.

The Spanish established a military fort on the land in 1776 and called it El Presidio. After gaining independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico controlled the area. The United States gained control in 1847 during the Mexican-American War and renamed the pueblo San Francisco. This was a military base until 1994, when it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In addition to the Walt Disney Family Museum, there is a history museum, the Society of California Pioneers museum, and Letterman Digital Arts Center + Yoda. A free shuttle ride to Crissy Field provides access to miles of walking trails, views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge and access to Fort Point National Historic Site located under the Bridge. Susan Avrett, Vice Chair, and Maddie German, Chair AEG Carolinas has been busy this spring! We hosted the 2017– 18 Jahns Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. John Wakabayashi in February. Dr. Wakabayashi gave presentations at UNCCharlotte, Guilford College, Wake Technical Community College, and North Carolina State University. He also attended a social at Raleigh Brewing Company Friday evening, attended by students, professors, and professionals.

The University of South Carolina (USC), AEG, and ASCE, hosted Spring 2018 field trip, Dam Failures during the Historic October 2015 Flood in South Carolina, in Columbia, South Carolina. We had a great dinner meeting on Friday, March 9, overlooking the USC campus, where Dr. Ali Tabrizi and Dr. Lindsey LaRocque presented on their research and provided attendees with a glimpse of the field trip stops.

The goal of their research was to collect and analyze timesensitive data on the earthen embankment failures immediately following the flood.

The field trip on Saturday, March 10, included a tour of the USC hydraulics lab. It was interesting to learn new techniques and technologies for modeling dam failures. After the USC hydraulics lab tour, three dam sites were visited: Gibson Pond Dam, Old Mill Dam and Lake Elizabeth Dam. These dams were constructed with an earthen embankment and concrete or rock spillway structures. This was Sue Buchanan’s last field trip as she steps down from her role as Field Trip Chair to spend more time with her boys. Rohit Warrier is eager and willing to assume the role and we are exited about many more field trips to come.

Our spring dinner meeting was held on April 19 in Raleigh, NC at Trophy Tap and Table. Sharon Eckard, PG, with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Brownfields Program, presented Opportunities in the Brownfields of Dreams & Brews. In her talk, she discussed how the North Carolina Brownfields Program has brought jobs to the state, increased the tax base of local jurisdictions, and provided other public benefits. There were approximately 80 regulators, professionals and students in attendance. Our Chapter sponsors, Pace Analytical and Contaminant Control, Inc., generously provided one drink ticket per paid registration.

At this meeting we also held a 50/50 raffle for the Carolinas Scholarship Fund and raised $100. Jane Gill-Shaler won the raffle and generously donated her portion of the winnings to the fund. At this meeting we also had five students from NC State, Wake Tech, and UNC Chapel Hill present posters on projects they have worked on as part of their studies.

The 2017 Carolinas Scholarship Fund was awarded to Savannah Bryant, a junior student at NC State. She plans to use the money to help fund her Field Camp.

We had another successful year with our Visiting Professionals Program. AEG members spoke at the following colleges and universities about what it’s like to be a geoscience professional: UNC-Charlotte, Wake Technical Community College, July 2018

A big “thank you” to the professionals who volunteered their time and energy speaking to students. We continue to receive a very positive response from the professors and students! After 11 years of running this important program, Rick Kolb is stepping down and handing the program over to the capable hands of Brad Worley. Much thanks to Rick for his hard work leading the VP program in the Carolinas for all these years and his continued dedication to AEG! We are also actively planning the 2019 AEG Annual Meeting that will be held in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina.

Inland Empire Chapter James Burns, Secretary The Inland Empire Chapter had a fantastic spring. In March, the chapter welcomed Fred Yi of Terracon and his interesting presentation, Seismic Design of the World’s First 3D Earthquake Protected Modern Hospital. His talk pertained to the geological concerns surrounding the new hospital complex at Loma Linda University Medical Center scheduled to open its doors in 2020.

The new 16-story structure, as well as the expanded 12-story Children’s Hospital, is located near two major faults, the San Jacinto (less than ¼-mile away) and the San Andreas. Using base-isolation techniques, this new structure is designed to resist a magnitude 7.9 earthquake with a peak ground acceleration of 0.91 g using a series of 126 sliding bearing pads and dampers for lateral isolation as well as 500 shock absorbers for vertical isolation.

In April, Frank Jordan, an Engineering Geologist with San Bernardino County’s Land Use Services Department, gave a stirring presentation regarding California’s Earthquake Clearinghouse Training and Emergency Training that would occur as a Chapter workshop in two weeks. In addition, Jordan also presented recent examples of structural geologic mapping from disparate areas across southern California which incorporated use of Google Earth Pro software.

May was a busy month for the chapter and we began the month by welcoming speakers Anne Rosinski, Miles Wagner, and April Wing, for a one-day workshop for Earthquake Clearinghouse Training and Earthquake Planning Training. Anne Rosinski, senior engineering geologist with the California Geological Survey, instructed attendees on collecting actionable intelligence in support of post-earthquake reconnaissance, which included a short field trip to the San Andreas fault to train attendees with the Earthquake Clearinghouse’s SpotOn Response software. Together, their talk, The History of US Borax in the California Desert and Beyond, covered the company’s history including economic methods developed for extracting and processing borate ores, changes in mining methods and transportation through time, and even applications and marketing for borate products.

The AEG Nashville Chapter has been busy conducting monthly seminars, regular chapter meetings and planning our field trips.

We are proud to announce that Stantec, Inc., has generously donated the sponsorship for our Chapter field trip/picnic to the USACE Center Hill Dam RCC project, near Carthage, TN. A big “Thank You” to Cassidy Sutherland of Stantec for making that happen. The field trip will allow members to observe up close the techniques used to investigate and remediate karst in an active dam foundation project.

We continue to reach out to prospective members and cordially invite anyone interested to attend our monthly presentations that are given in conjunction with our chapter meetings. Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN, is in the process of becoming our first student chapter, because of the dedicated efforts of Jennifer Stephens. Thank You! Our guest lecturers and topics have been both engaging and entertaining, giving further testament to the high level of professionalism in our chapter. I would also like to announce that Tom Ballard, PG, is our acting Nashville Chapter Chairman until July, as Mike Arles, PG, is out hiking the Appalachian Trail until mid-July.

Our April meeting was held at the Bavarian Bierhaus in Nashville. Our speaker was Vanessa Bateman PE, PG, Chief of the Civil Design Branch, USACE-Nashville, TN. Her presentation, US Highway 64, Ocoee River Rockslide – Emergency Stabilization and Repair, included a very informative slide show on the progression of the design and remediation phases of the project.

The exposure of weak slate and phyllite beds at the toe of the Highway 64 road cut, in conjunction with over 5 inches of rain over a 24-hour period, led to planar sliding failure of a portion of the rock slope. Remediation included scaling of loose rock and soil, trim blasting of remaining beds on the slope to remove the potential for further rock fall, installation of pattern rock bolts throughout the slope, and installation of drains at the toe of the slope. Due to the proximity of the TVA dam, blasting vibrations had to be monitored. Limited access along the two-lane highway hampered rock slope mitigation construction. Continuing slope failures made this project both extremely dangerous and challenging.

We were recently honored on May 17, 2018 to have AEG President, Dr. Greg Hempen, come to Nashville and give three presentations—all in one day—for us. The first one, held in the USACE Nashville District Office, was on the Embrey Dam removal. He then spoke to our student members at our May Chapter meeting on Career Development and followed it up with a very informative presentation on Central US Seismicity – New Madrid Seismic Zone. All of these presentations were well attended and very informative.

Dr. Hempen’s talk for our career development seminar for our students, Get a Job & Make It Your Own, focused on three areas: Networking and Credentials, Acquiring a Job, and Career Development. It was an open discussion forum and the participation was very engaging. Dr. Hempen gave our students the invaluable advice that only comes from experience on how to write resumes, interview etiquette and networking skills. It was great to hear our chapter students asking the questions that will enhance their career development skills and they really enjoyed getting the practical advice that Dr. Hempen provided to them.

Dr. Hempen’s second presentation, Are You Ready for the Big One? – Important Considerations for Central US Seismicity, reviewed recent research for the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). This research allows new interpretations of historic earthquakes and evaluations to assist the public with the preparedness and response to potential earthquakes. Paleoseismic studies and development of earthquake source and wave passage modeling have allowed a new assessment of historic events. These assessments, in turn, may be used to develop government, business, and public approaches to seismic-hazard preparedness and response.

private sectors. Assessing and managing seismic risk will continue to increase as more structures are built and emerging technology allows geologists to interpret and predict seismic events and their intensities. The New Madrid seismic zone will continue to influence the design of both current and future structure foundations and challenges geologists in the region to prepare for the next “Big One.” We truly appreciated Dr. Hempen sharing his expertise of evaluating historic seismic events using new techniques that incorporate historic data into a modern perspective.

Having top-notch technical presenters at our monthly AEG meetings has really been a great recruiting tool for our chapter.

Our topics have been relevant, engaging and we continue to be blessed with presenters that are leaders in their chosen area of expertise. This is a meeting format that we will continue to pursue, while also engaging our students to give presentations on their research. Our continuing mission at AEG Nashville is to provide a forum for the exchange of technology and fellowship for the profession of engineering and environmental geologists in our region, including students. We are proud to say we are hitting that one out of the park!

Our annual May Student Night captured a summary of student research wrapping up for the end of the school year.

The lively discussion with each poster presenter added to the excitement of the evening. We had 19 students participate and over 135 people in attendance.

The speakers to date included some of the brightest scientists and engineers the Oregon Chapter could offer its members. The topics included details on the State of Oregon’s environmental cleanup program, paleo-earthquake analyses in California and Oklahoma, emergency landslide mitigation and monitoring, seismogenic fault mapping with implications on the greater Oregon and Cascadia Subduction Zone tectonic structures, geologic skills training by mapping of complex mélange terrane, and the history and causes of a massive ancient landslide along the Columbia River corridor during catastrophic glacial outburst floods! Wow what a show it was.

The Oregon Chapter Planning Committee has begun preparing for the upcoming AEG 2020 Annual Meeting that’ll be held in our neck of the woods (Portland, Oregon). Although it’s a couple of years out, this is a meeting that you won’t want to miss. Our little corner of the globe offers world-class cuisine and fermented beverages that can be savored after one of the spectacular field trips being planned. Just imagine sitting back after the best meal you ever had and discussing the incredible field trip earlier that day with people who understand those funny words you say, like jökulhlaup, tombolo, oxygen isotope ratio, and dextral shear. We are looking forward to teaching you a few things and showing you a good time!

Sacramento Chapter Nicholas Novoa, Secretary It’s been another busy quarter for the Sacramento Chapter. We are sad to lose our Chapter Chair, Meredith Beswick, who will be stepping down. We wish Meredith the best and thank her for her leadership and hard work.

The chapter hosted our annual Student Night meeting on Tuesday, April 24 attended by students and professors from Sacramento State, UC Davis, and Stanislaus State, and professionals from both the private and public sectors.

As part of the meeting, the chapter announced the winners of two H. Ray Taber Founders Scholarships, one undergraduate and one graduate, to promote the study of geology, environmental and engineering geology, and related earth science disciplines. The recipients were Benjamin Anderson, of Sacramento State – Graduate, and Minda Moe, of UC Davis – Undergraduate. Continuing a new practice started last year, the finalists 38

also received rock hammers along with their checks and framed award certificates.

In addition to the scholarship awards, the meeting featured four students who presented excellent posters. Raffle prizes that promoted networking gave

tickets to students and professionals engaged in conversation during the poster presentation period. Theron Sowers from Sacramento State received the best poster honors for her poster Stable Isotopes in the South Fork of the American River.

On May 10, we held our chapter meeting at Yolo Brewing Company in West Sacramento. AEG President, Dr. Greg L. Hempen, gave his talk, What’s My Line? Site Assessment! The presentation on the applied geologist’s most important duty, site assessment, developed how geophysics may advance the information at a site and reduce the risk of unknown site conditions. The Sacramento Chapter had a joint meeting with the Sacramento Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) on June 19 at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Our speaker for the evening was Kevin W. Franke, PhD, PE, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bringham Young University. Dr. Franke discussed The Use of Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAVs) in PostEarthquake Geotechnical Reconnaissance Following the 2016 Central Italy Earthquakes. More on his talk in the next edition of AEG News!

Many members of the Sacramento Chapter are busy preparing for the AEG/IAEG Annual Meeting in September. A big thanks to our members, Coralie Wilhite, Chase White, and Drew Kennedy, who have been working especially hard to arrange a spectacular meeting. Coralie is the AEG Meeting Co-Chair. Chase and Drew are Co-Chairs for the field courses.

In addition, many of our members will be presenting posters and technical sessions at the meeting. We are all looking forward to a great meeting.

St. Louis Chapter Jessie Goodwin, Chapter Editor The St. Louis Chapter’s February meeting was our annual Student Presentation Night. Benjamin Lockwood of Missouri State University presented Statistical Analysis of Groundwater Basin Geochemistry in Springfield, Missouri, and discussed the use of field data to calibrate a model to differentiate between chemical footprints of aquifers in Springfield, Missouri and using additional field data to test the model. David Nymberg of the University of Missouri - Columbia presented Relating Neotectonic Indicators to Subsurface Structural Geometries in the Noble Hills along the Southern Death Valley Fault Zone in California, which discussed using seismic mapping Dr. Ron Sides and UAVs to survey the fault zone. Also at the meeting, Dr. Ron Sides discussed the role of the Geologic Mapping Advisory Committee in selecting areas of Missouri for geologic mapping efforts and securing funding for the mapping efforts.

During our March meeting, P. Benjamin Leutkemeyer of Terracon presented and shared some of his experiences with the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD), a coring and geophysical exploration at Parkfield, California. Field activities for the SAFOD project were initiated in 2002 with a pilot July 2018

hole. Phase 1 of the main shaft took place in 2004 with 1.5 km vertical drilling then angling toward the fault and advancing to a depth of 2.5 km. In 2005, Phase 2 advanced the main shaft to a depth of 3.2 km, crossing the San Andreas Fault and terminating in the North American Plate. Phase 3 in 2007 consisted of four lateral cores.

At our April meeting, Daniel Greenwood of Geotechnology presented on the Lutz Reservoir in Brighton, Colorado. He briefly discussed the issue of water rights in Colorado. The Lutz Reservoir was a planned detention pond to hold runoff from urban landscapes, but due to water rights issues in the area, the pond had to be kept separate from the groundwater (present 5 feet below land surface). The subsurface was sand over clayDaniel Greenwood stone at 25 feet below land surface. The detention pond was constructed with a bentonite slurry diaphragm wall that extended three feet into the claystone.

At the meeting, we also presented The St. Louis Chapter Student Educational Award. Each chapter meeting attended by a student in fall 2017 and spring 2018 represented one entry to the drawing for a $1,000 award made to a students’ account with their university. The winner of the 2017–18 award was Jared McAvoy!

Derek Nees of Brotcke Well & Pump presented at the St. Louis Chapter’s May meeting on Drilling in Missouri – Thoughts on Aquifers and Oddities Encountered. He discussed various interesting drilling projects he has worked on in Missouri,

including drilling on barges in the Mississippi River and lakes.

Nees described drilling through the Winfield Dam in Winfield, Missouri. The Winfield Dam is constructed on wooden piles rather than on bedrock, and there was concern that the river was undercutting the dam. The drilling consisted of coring through the concrete of the dam to perform subsurface exploration below. Evidence of undercutting was not found.

San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Julien Cohen-Waeber, Chapter Chair, and Courtney Johnson, Chapter Secretary AEGSF has enjoyed an exciting first half of 2018!

Following a riveting presentation on The Oroville Spillways – Geology and Why It Matters by Holly Nichols (CA. DWR) in January, we welcomed the 2017–18 Jahns Lecturer, Dr. John Wakabayashi, for a well-attended joint meeting with ASCE’s San Francisco Geo-Institute in February. Dr. Wakabayashi’s talk, Attempting to Bridge the Growing Gap Between Academic and Applied Geology: A Personal Odyssey, was a homecoming of sorts for the speaker, who had lived in the Bay Area for many years and was heavily involved in our Chapter. He shared his evolving observations on the local Franciscan mélange and even promised to lead a field trip to reconnect with local practicing geologists. The field trip is scheduled for July and will be a visit to Ring Mountain, Marin County, and its unique display of Franciscan mélange, followed by a trip to a local micro-brewery (of course)—we can’t wait!

In March, we welcomed Dr. Scott Burns from Portland State University to present his passionate talk on The Dynamic Terroir of the Willamette Valley: The Relationship Between Geology, Soil, Climate and Wine. As a bonus hands-on learning experience with his presentation, he provided a special wine sampling. It was a distinct honor to have Dr. Burns visit our Chapter as he is the current president of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) as well as a past-president of AEG and past Jahns Lecturer. We are looking forward to having him back in town for the AEG/IAEG Congress in September.

In April, we held our Annual Student Night, which was once again a great success. We welcomed three student presenters from San Jose State University (SJSU) and the University of California Berkeley (UCB) who spoke to meeting attendees on their research. Natasha Budimirovic and Colin Phillips (SJSU) shared their research on the Northern Cascade Range geology, and Amr Ewais (UCB) shared his on the service life HDPE liner in landfill containment systems.

– Mitigating Blasting Impacts without Diminishing Effectiveness, provided the meeting attendees with a lively discussion on his observations and project examples. The Chapter board members in attendance also sat down with Greg before the meeting to grill him with questions and get his suggestions on how to develop our Chapter.

The Chapter board members reconvened later in May to welcome our newest additions Kate Zeiger and Justin Lindeman, who will be sharing responsibilities for field trip organization and managing AEGSF’s cyber footprint. We’re excited and thankful for Kate and Justin who bring us new spirit and enthusiasm! The board also discussed how we might implement Greg Hempen’s helpful recommendations as well as our upcoming meetings and efforts leading up to the IAEG Congress in September. We hope to see you there!

AEG Texas Chapter Spring 2018 Meeting: South Central Oklahoma Geology The Texas Chapter met in Ardmore, Oklahoma, for its quarterly meeting on April 28. More than thirty students, professionals, and guests attended and enjoyed morning presentations and an afternoon field trip. Regional Director Jeff Neathery and AEG EC Treasurer Cynthia Palomares joined us at the meeting.

AEG Foundation Treasurer and Texas Chapter member Bill Flanigan delivered a great presentation on the hydrogeology of the Arbuckle Mountain area with a focus on the Arbuckle Simpson Aquifer. AEG Texas member Jerry McCalip presented an overview of the regional geology of the Arbuckle Mountains.

AEG Texas Vice Chair Eric Stiffler gave us an overview of the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists sunset review process with lots of statistics on Texas’ practicing geoscientists. To cap things off, Bill Flanigan raised nearly $2,000 dollars for the AEG Foundation’s Mathewson and Johnston funds!

Our afternoon activities began with fantastic lunch stop at a famous Oklahoma BBQ stop, Smokin’ Joes. Martin-Marietta Materials (MMM) graciously sponsored the lunch. A big thanks to Mike Carney, MMM District Quality Control Manager, and his team for making the lunch arrangements. We then proceeded to MMM’s Washita Quarry. Jerry McCalip spoke about the outstanding exposures of Viola Limestone that are being mined at the quarry. The overturned anticline was the high point for us Texans. We have to travel to see structure unlike many of y’all. Mike Carney and Eric Walston outlined the mining and

processing of aggregate then we proceeded to a spoils pile where we collected a few specimens before heading to the next field trip stop. Our last stop before returning to the hotel was a roadcut along IH-35 where we could see great examples of tombstone topography. Another great AEG Texas Chapter quarterly meeting and field trip was under our belts! Consider joining us for the July meeting if you will be in Texas on July 28.
