Project Description: With their current emergency operations building about to be decommissioned/demolished, the District decided to build a facility to house the District Emergency Operations Center, and unify the maintenance and operations departments.

The EOC is designed as a resilient hub for operations during times of catastrophe, while doubling as a staff training and conferencing space on a more regular basis. The M&O component of the project will centralize office, shops, work yards, and support spaces for the two departments who are currently scattered across multiple campuses. This project will support collaboration, efficiency, and professional dignity for critical, often overlooked members of District staff.

Project Description: San Jose-Evergreen Community College District hired Aedis to design a new central Maintenance and Operations facility, as the existing one was slated for demolition to make way for future development. During the design phase, the District noted that they were also in need of a new Emergency Operations Center.

Aedis was already working with the District to control their tight budget of $10.4M for the M&O Building. With the addition of the entire EOC department scope, the total project is being delivered for $14.3M.

Aedis pivoted to address both needs by having the EOC and M&O designed together into one facility. This was an ideal marriage of departments because equipment needed during an emergency would likely be coming from the M&O building. To accommodate both departments, Aedis incorporated structural upgrades into the design, added a new solar generator with battery backup, and designed redundant phone and data line systems for the building.

• Adaptive re-use of an existing building

The San Jose City College Master Plan indicated that the Student Union was to be demolished because the structural grid would not work with program needs. Requested to provide a second opinion, AEDIS saw only opportunity. By adapting and re-using the building, the District could save considerable money and also provide a needed home for its growing Cosmetology and Reprographics departments.

• Built-in energy saving features New window walls To comply with the California Building Code, Aedis reduced the building’s structural loads while implementing a voluntary seismic upgrade. We also built full mock-ups of the ceiling space assembly to make sure that all ductwork, piping, ceiling support and lighting would fit within the existing low ceiling height.

Project Description: Certified LEED® Silver, the concept for this project focused strongly on sustainability–maximizing open space, natural daylight, and ventilation–while satisfying the project’s programmatic needs. A flagship project, it was be the first of many LEED certified buildings for the District. This 53,000 square foot complex included classroom spaces for fine arts, music, dance and general education departments. The combined complex features a “forest wall” consisting of re-purposed redwood lumber that faces the main courtyard arranged in an irregular, yet rhythmic pattern. Project Description: San Mateo CCD was one of three community college districts in California authorized by the state legislature to carry out a pilot design/build program. Renovating and building athletic and PE facilities at San Mateo, Canada, and Skyline colleges was one of the first community college design/build projects in California. The design/build team consisted of Bothman Construction as the lead entity, CMX Sports Engineers as field designers, and AEDIS as the architect-of-record. The project delivered all the benefits that design/build promises: faster design and construction, and zero change orders. Architectural Services Monterey Peninsula Community College District Supplemental Relevant Project Information 17

To accommodate a heightened demand for STEM education space, Santa Monica College is building a new 110,0000 sf Math and Science Building. The building is designed to consolidate programs previously scattered throughout the campus and create an interdisciplinary STEM community adjacent to the college’s existing science complex. This new building will include math classrooms, a learning center, science laboratories, and classrooms, and a planetarium. Located on the south side of campus and connected to an existing science building, the new building will serve as a new campus gateway and creates a new science quad. Set to open in 2023, and funded through a combination of local bonds and state-matching funds, the addition will accommodate the college’s mathematics and science programs. Currently, math and some science programs are dispersed across multiple aged buildings— creating teaching challenges for faculty and hindering the types of cross-departmental collaboration that are so important in STEM education. The new building will solve this challenge by bringing the math department (the largest academic program at Santa Monica College), as well as the earth, life and astronomy programs together in a new facility linked to the existing science building— creating an enriched STEM community.

Architectural Services Monterey Peninsula Community College District Supplemental Relevant Project Information 19

The Eastside Public Safety Training Center is a facility for training firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians; expand opportunities to upgrade skills for existing public safety professionals; facilitate live drills in firefighting, police pursuits and disaster response; and integrate general education programs for Associate Degrees in public safety fields. In addition to the interior classroom and laboratory spaces, the nine acre facility includes a five story fire tower and a wide range of fire and police training props. This 32,500 sf facility is LEED Gold. The project also includes a 250 kWAC solar PV system comprising three arrays of Sharp NU-235F1 solar panels. One array is roof mounted and utilizes a Sunlink racking system. The other two arrays are mounted on carport structures at a 10-degree tilt. A single Satcon Powergate Plus 500 kW inverter is provided. The system configuration was driven by the overall design of the project. The harsh desert environment necessitated the need to provide covered parking, which was utilized for solar PV power production. A large apparatus bay with a tall, flat roof provided an opportunity for roof mounted solar panels that would not experience any shading or interfere with other roof mounted equipment. By upsizing the inverter, we are able to expand the system at a future point with no significant changes to the infrastructure.

The 2.5-acre, square, city block project is collaboration with the City of Indio and the College to redevelop Indio’s downtown district. CannonDesign coordinated this local GO Bond project with the City, CCCCO Office, DSA and other governing agencies to provide facilities planning, design and construction management as an Integrated Team planning through construction effort to fast-track the project. We also coordinated the design of the on-site and off-site infrastructure utilities with the City for the 2.5-acre piece of raw land.

The facility contains administrative and financial offices, 13 classrooms, two science labs, two meeting rooms, an active learning lab, two conference/ training center rooms and retail space on the first floor as a revenue generator for the District. The LEED Silver building includes energy-efficient building systems as well as planned renewable energy photovoltaic panels in the parking lot.

CannonDesign worked with the stakeholders and college groups of College of the Desert to come to consensus on the new design of this $15 Million, 41,000 gsf, four-story off-site center building and ADA parking lot in downtown Indio, California. Becoming an Icon for a Commuter Campus

STEM has long been an area of opportunity and growth within the job market; however, employers still struggle to find candidates to fill the ever-changing and expanding skills gap. Daley College’s Manufacturing, Technology and Engineering Center (MTEC) is an example of a facility and curriculum that will prepare students for more than 50,000 anticipated jobs coming to the region in the engineering and advanced manufacturing fields during the next decade.

The 11th largest community college in the nation, Tidewater Community College (TCC) is among the fastest-growing large twoyear institutions in the United States. While student centers are uncommon for community colleges, the downtown Norfolk Campus’ Student Center exceeded the college’s expectations in creating a student-friendly campus living room with social, recreational and service spaces.
