Welcome!
We are delighted to welcome you to the AECT community! As a professional association of instructional designers, educators, and business professionals, we are dedicated to leading the global study and application of new technologies for learning.
Our members, who are passionate about improving teaching and learning through technology, can be found in colleges and universities, the Armed Forces, industry, museums, libraries, hospitals, and many other places where educational change is underway. Our mission is to enrich teaching and learning within the United States and across the world, and we are excited to have you join us in this endeavor.
AECT has been at the forefront of educational technology, providing an international forum for the exchange and dissemination of ideas. As we continue to look forward to the next 100 years of AECT, we are expanding our outreach and impact. At the 2024 International Convention in Kansas City, AECT recognized their second annual Fellows, a program which recognizes members who have made exemplary or groundbreaking accomplishments in the discipline of educational communications and technology. In 2025, AECT will launch a new Center of Excellence for Event Planning focused on enhancing event processes to strategically improve AECT’s event coordination and execution, allowing the organization to expand event opportunities including a future international summit.

At AECT, our members are in charge. Members elect AECT’s officers, including the president. Members lead the divisions. Members write the papers that are presented at the annual convention, and members review those papers for inclusion in the convention. Members lead a variety of other events, including online webinars.
A small AECT staff works virtually across the United States and is dedicated to serving our members around the world.
Members drive AECT.
“The camaraderie is what makes AECT special. You make quick friends here. There are so many people here who are influential, but they are very humble. The humility they have is that they realize they are among people who want to learn. That’s the key here, people learning from one another.”
Robert
Doyle
Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University
“The legends are here.”

“I was a graduate student at Penn State and AECT was the main conference that everyone went to. The AECT convention just felt right. Everyone was so welcoming. By the end of the first conference, I was running for president of the Graduate Student Assembly. Now, my CV is AECT. My presentations are AECT. My collaborators are AECT. The amount of ways that AECT has helped my career is immeasurable.”
Tutaleni Asino Associate Professor, Learning, Design and Technology, Oklahoma State University

Many AECT members are tenure-track faculty at universities around the world. It’s been said that to succeed, it’s publish or perish. AECT takes a longer view of publishing as a key outcome of research that leads to breakthroughs in the field. AECT’s relationships with publishers Springer, Brill, and Routledge/Taylor & Francis provide our members with an inside track on publishing in high-impact journals.
AECT’s recently-launched Center of Excellence for Publishing is focused on extending publishing opportunities for our members and the reach of our journals for the research community.
AECT provides its members many opportunities to present their work. The annual international convention has more than 800 peer-reviewed papers that are presented from members from around the world.
The annual summer research symposium is another opportunity for members to present their work in a setting of their peers.
Many AECT divisions host webinars that provide even more opportunities for members to present their work.
Have something to say about your research? AECT provides many forums for you to shine.
“I’m
working on mobile learning for out-of-school students in Nigeria. The audience was very encouraging when I presented my work. I’ve been learning a lot at the convention about online teaching and learning and about instructional design from leaders in the field. I’ve also connected with grad students from all over and it encourages you that you’re not alone in your journey.”
Olaican Kushimo Ph.D. student in Learning Design and Technology,
Oklahoma State University
“I
connect to people here. I wouldn’t be a quality researcher without the people I’m working with. I connect to leaders and the organization, and I learn from them. I also learn what’s happening in countries around the world, and I maintain friendships in many countries through AECT.”
Curt Bonk Professor of Instructional Systems Technology, School of Education, Indiana University
AECT members have access to many resources both in-person and online. We have the largest print and video libraries in the industry. Webinars and presidential and special sessions are available at the click of a button.
Joining the AECT isn’t just about membership—it’s about stepping into leadership opportunities that can shape your career and impact the field of educational technology.
From steering committees to division boards and even the AECT board, there are many opportunities for you to showcase your talents, grow professionally, build your resume, and forge lasting connections with peers and mentors.
Whether you’re an emerging professional looking to bolster your CV or a seasoned expert eager to give back, there’s a place for you to make an impact in the AECT community.
“I recieved tremendous leadership opportunities here. I’ve been an intern, I was a legacy scholarship recipient, I was president of my division (the Technology and Integrated Learning Division). I’ve held other posts as well and now, I am AECT’s Ethics Officer. Those opportunities just don’t exist in my world outside of AECT. This is my place to be a leader and to practice leadership.”
