xpecting a new addition to your family? Then you need to check out the new addition to Downtown Sioux Falls - Cutie Pie Belly and Baby Boutique. It’s one of those stores that you walk into and can’t help but say, “Awwww....” as you look around at all of the adorable items for a new baby. Owner Jackie Johnson says the idea for her boutique came out of necessity after she and her husband Mitch moved here from Mankato, Minnesota, two and a half years ago with their first baby. There had been a specialty shop for newborns and expecting moms where she lived, but she couldn’t find anything like it in Sioux Falls. She began thinking about what items she would offer if she had her own business. On September 1, all those ideas became reality when she opened her shop on Phillips Avenue. She and her husband were interested in a downtown
location because of the city’s longstanding commitment to rejuvenate that part of town. “There’s so much energy down here,” she said. Cutie Pie Belly and Baby Boutique is a unique destination for new and expecting moms and for those looking for a special gift for a baby or mom-to-be. One of the most popular items already is the swaddle blanket by Aden & Anais. It is the style you see in photographs of celebrity babies, and it’s only available at Cutie Pie. The muslin cotton is a breathable, comfortable fabric for babies to keep them warm in winter and cool in the summer. The Aden & Anais line also offers sleepers, washcloths, hooded towels and a burp cloth/bib combination. The line has been so popular that Johnson had to place a second order in her first week of being open.
Johnson said safety is important at their house, with a 3-year-old and a 16-month at home, and she wanted the same for her store and her products. Everything in the store is non-toxic or

I made the right decision. I am now able to live out my passion every day while working with great people capturing their moments.” Although she does have a small in-home studio, Trisha says she prefers to shoot on location. That gives her the opportunity to work with clients and choose settings and outfits that fit both the personality and overall mood they want to capture. clients’ homes, Trisha says, because that is where they are most comfortable. Inspired Photography also has special pricing available for clients interested in destination weddings. “My favorite location right now to shoot is downtown Sioux Falls,” says Trisha. “Even with its historic buildings, it still has a feel that is very modern and contemporary. It offers a large variety of textured walls and very unique backgrounds.” When asked if she has a favorite age group to photograph, Trisha answers that she can’t just pick one. “I enjoy photographing every stage of life. I really like working with a client through all of the stages. It is such an honor to be with them celebrating an exciting engagement, getting married, and then maternity and family pictures. They become friends. You feel like you become a part of their story.” To choose the right setting for a client, Trisha will review samples of her work, looking at locations, style, time of year and more. Here are a few of Trisha’s favorites… I actually just shot a maternity session with a past wedding couple. We did both outdoor and indoor maternity pictures. We planned the session in great detail and captured a wide variety of amazing images. One of my favorite sessions with a child was last fall when I photographed this little 1 year old at his home. The property was so beautiful with fall colors. He was full of energy and I just followed him all over the property clicking away. I shot a wedding a couple of years ago in Dell Rapids. I spent a lot of time with the bride talking about the theme of her wedding and visiting various locations in Dell Rapids. After the ceremony we went to four different locations. It was very important to my bride to capture a shot in a cornfield. We had gotten a lot of rain the night before and the land was sopping wet... but that didn’t stop this bride - she was determined to get that shot. She hiked up her dress and ventured to the perfect location. It was great! I love it when couples feel how important a shot is to them… and they’re willing to walk through a wet cornfield to get it! Inspired Photography offers a free online proofing gallery where each client can view color, black and white and special filtered versions of each image. Clients can then choose from packages or ala carte ordering options. Clients can also select specialty items, such as custom photo guest books, storybooks, canvas prints and collage panels. Trisha says these are all very creative ways to display artistic images. She also offers a Full Resolution Copyright Released CD so clients are able to make reprints on their own. Trisha believes photography is all about telling a story. “Not only do we capture the lives of our clients, but we are inspired by them. We strive to capture moments, not poses. Autumn Glazed Pork Chops Ingredients:
4 boneless pork chops, 3/4-inch thick 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 cup apple cider, OR juice 1/2 cup whole cranberry sauce 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons frozen orange juice concentrate 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg Cooking Directions: -high heat. Sprinkle both sides of chops with Spray a large nonstick skillet with nonstick coating. Heat over medium cider. Cover tightly; cook over low heat for 5-6 pepper. Brown chops 2-3 minutes on each side in hot skillet. Add apple F. Drain off juices. minutes or until internal temperature on a thermometer reads 160 degrees ginger and nutmeg. Pour over chops. Deb is an interior designer with a knack for creating exceptionally beautiful homes. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apparent in the unique details of her own home, like the hand-painted wallpaper in the dining room or
the Victorian mantle, which was extracted from an old mansion in Hot Springs, SD. Deb knows how to not only create beautiful homes, but how to give them their own distinct flare that also reflects her love of design. In 1993, Deb and her husband, Gordon spotted their future

home. It was a mess of an old, run-down building on a quiet street in Canton, SD. The home had a lot of character, but it was very much in need of a transformation. The resourceful couple imagined it as their dream house, but realized it would take some serious determination and a major renovation to complete their vision. Deb brought to the renovation a designer’s
sensibility, while Gordon attributed an air of calm to the process, and after a multiyear renovation, the 3,500-square-foot home is standing proof of their staying power. The renovation has taken an aged, dilapidated building and transformed it into a stunning Victorian-style home. “The home was originally built in 1874, but it had been turned into a 3-unit apartment complex

The entryway serves as a perfect introduction to the rest of the home because its boasts intricate and ornate details, as well as a certain
cohesiveness that pays tribute to the Victorian era. Deb treats each room not as a separate entity, but as part of a continuous whole. The couple has placed items in rooms throughout the home that they’ve found during their travels. “Travel inspires décor and can trigger conversation with your guests,” said Deb. “I’ve purchased a lot of fossils and broken Indian pottery

“One day I’d like to create a Victorian maze,” said Deb. “I’d also like to plant an elevated, raised garden. I enjoy the process of watching a garden grow.” As the remodel project was nearing completion, the couple was able to learn some of the home’s history when the original owner, F.H. Bacon’s granddaughter stopped by one afternoon. “One day this lady came and knocked on the door,” said Gordon. “She explained that she was the granddaughter of the original owner back in 1897. She shared stories about growing up in the
house and showed us parts of the house that we weren’t even aware of yet – secret passageways, nooks and crannies, and little places to tuck away in.” Almost two decades ago when the Bourne’s first saw their home, they had a vision. They saw potential hidden beneath the layers of faded wallpaper, wood paneling, and orange countertops, and they managed to create an exquisite Victorianstyle home that preserves a part of Canton’s history, as well as showcases Deb’s talent as a designer.

Ghost Pines Cabernet This wine is a product that comes from one of my favorite families in California, the Martinis. In 1964, Louis P. Martini, son of Napa pioneer Louis M. Martini, purchased 178 acres of land in the eastern hills of the Napa Valley. The Martini family developed this land into a vineyard which they named Ghost Pines as a tribute to the native grey pines which at dusk appear to hover, solitary and ghostlike throughout the coastal valleys. Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon draws from multiple wine growing counties to create a wine as unique as the Ghost Pine itself. This is a great wine that is easy to drink and goes down even easier because you don’t have to break the bank to get some. The aromas of this wine are of dark chocolate, blackberry, cassis, and a cedary-oak that dominates over the body of the bouquet. As the wine develops in the glass, aromas of black pepper also creep in. The flavors translate closely to the aromas showing dark berry-fruit nuances, black cherry, oak, pepper, and cedar notes as well as a vanilla essence on the mid-palate.

Eye of the Toad Dry Rosé of Pinot Noir by Toad Hollow At a time when most American Rosé wines have either an overabundance of residual sugar or are “flabby” and lacking in acidity, Toad Hollow continues to produce true French-Style, bone dry, and elegant Rosé wine produced from the noble Pinot Noir grape. This is probably the most fun wine on this list! This is the ELEVENTH vintage of Pinot Noir Rosé and, by far, the best to date. The wine has incredible body and weight for a Rosé of Pinot Noir. The color is a beautiful pink with a hint of “Beaujolais blue”. This wine has a nose of rose petals and violets. Whether in sun or shade, this is a truly dry, uncomplicated statement of Pinot Noir at its lightest and most delicate. It is very important to keep all sources of sugar out of Rosé and allow the classic grapes to speak for themselves. Spice and pepper bring out the wonderful wild strawberry flavors. A wine that is great with sushi and wasabi or spicy Thai food.

Francis Ford Coppola’s wines Why Francis Ford Coppola? Not only was he the director of the Godfather movies (which are some of my all-time favorites,) but he also directed Dracula. What better movie to watch on Halloween, right? Coppola has created quite the winery in California, fully complemented by a museum featuring things like scripts and movie props. If you want to be impressed without even going to Sonoma, check out his winery’s website at www.franciscoppolawinery. com. I highly recommend trying any of Coppola’s offerings which range in variety and price points. Any of the Diamond Collection are winners, especially the Claret (a Bordeaux style wine made with a blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.) If you’re looking for something more affordable, try the classic Rosso or Bianco, blended wines that are great on the patio. And if you’re looking for something fun, the Sofia wines (named after Coppola’s only daughter) are light yet sophisticated. 1 1/2 cups butter, softened 2- 3/4 cups sugar 6 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 3 cups flour 3/4 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ginger 1/4 tsp cloves 1 cup solid pack pumpkin
Combine the sugar, oil, and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Add the pumpkin and mix well. Combine the dry ingredients and add to the pumpkin mixture alternately with water. Beat well. Pour bread batter into two greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pans. Bake at 350˚ for 60-65 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test. Cool for 10-15 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks for complete cooling.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs 2 at a time and beat well after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Combine the dry ingredients and add to the creamed mixture alternately with the pumpkin, beat until just combined. Pour the batter into 2 greased and floured 9x5x3 inch loaf pans. Bake at 350˚ for 65-70 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test. Cool 10-15 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool.
Nick’s Pumpkin Bread 5 eggs 1 1/4 cups cooking oil 1 15 ounce can solid pack pumpkin 2 cups flour 2 cups sugar Two 3 ounce packages of cook and serve vanilla pudding mix 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt Beat eggs in a large mixing bowl and then add oil and pumpkin and beat until smooth. Combine remaining ingredients and beat into the pumpkin mixture. Pour the batter into 5 greased mini loaf pans. Bake at 325˚ for 50-55 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test. Cool 10-15 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.

Essential Kitchen Tools & Toys title I
found myself in one of the big name kitchen stores the other day, the kind that sends you a catalog every month filled with all sorts of gadgets. As I stood there in the store, I went through an emotional swing. First, I felt like my kitchen was inferior and incomplete; if I didn’t spend hundreds of dollars, I might not be able to boil water. Then I started thinking which of these items do I really need? Do I need a cornbread baker that makes little muffins shaped like corn? No. Do I need a 14-piece set of solid copper cookware? No. I spent about half an hour in that store and what did I buy? Nothing. I found that I already have the stuff I need, and the rest are just gadgets. Here’s the thing; a kitchen gadget—to me at least—implies it’s not really a necessity, just a fun little add-on; a toy if you will. Kitchen tools, however, are the essentials, the things that are really hard to cook without. With that in mind, here’s my list of Must-Have Kitchen Tools and Favorite Kitchen Toys.

Must-Have Kitchen Tools Note to readers: I’ll skip the dissertation that the five best tools in your kitchen are your senses; taste, smell, sight, sound and touch. That’s a whole article on its own. The Knife (fig a): I have a couple of chef’s knives, but my favorite is an eight inch Shun Classic. Nothing fancy and not too expensive, but it fits my hand, balances very nicely and holds an edge very well. Nothing smashes garlic like a chef’s knife and if you can’t cut something with one of these, you probably shouldn’t be trying to cut it. The Knife, part 2: If you’re like me, you have a whole block or drawer full of knives. My block holds 15 plus a steel and kitchen shears, but the truth is, three of those knives do ninety percent of the work; the chef’s knife (above) a paring knife and the serrated bread knife. I’ve got a couple of six-inch serrated utility knives and they see a lot of use during tomato season, but I

could live without them. The others (plus the three or four in the drawer) really just take up space. Wooden Risotto Paddle (fig b):a I found this in a kitchen store in Omaha several years ago and I grab it all the time. It’s the bastard child of a spatula and a wooden spoon. The flat end gets to the bottom of the pan and the wood is safe for non-stick pans. Scorched and stained, it’s my choice for soups and stews, sauces and salsas, and of course, risotto. Spring-loaded tongs: I didn’t realize just how much I counted on these stainless steel tongs until I was cooking last Thanksgiving in my mom’s kitchen. Hers were short, flimsy and didn’t do the trick. I really missed mine. I have 4 pairs and I use

them to flip, poke, stir, grill and even take small ramekins out of the oven. Skillets: Again, I’ve got a whole bunch of pots and pans, but two of my skillets see more duty than all of the others combined. The first is a ten inch nonstick. I use it for eggs, vegetables, grilled sandwiches and sauces. The second is a twelve inch stainless steel; it cooks most of the meat, risottos and paellas. If I’m looking to sear or brown something, I grab this fella. Dutch Oven: Big and heavy, cast iron coated porcelain—this is my go-to pot for soups, stews, braised meat and even pasta. Labor Day weekend it did roasted parsnip and carrot soup one day and my all-time favorite, chicken-fried lamb chops, the next. Versatile? It sees time on the stove top, in the oven and even out on the grill.
The Toys Immersion Blender: I haven’t had this for very long but I keep finding new uses for it. It is a puree champ (did I mention the roasted parsnip and carrot soup?) and it chops, blends and whisks. Great for soups, sauces and salad dressings. And the best part, it cleans up in a snap.

Screwpull Vertical Lever Wine Opener: Sure, I can open a bottle of wine with a $3 waiter-style corkscrew, but this is so easy to use I could open a hundred bottles without breaking a sweat. Plus it looks so good that it lives on the counter all the time and you never want to miss an opportunity to open a bottle of wine. Leather Pot Holders (fig c): These are LamsonSharp brand and I love them. Are they really better than the cheap, embroidered potholders in your mom’s kitchen? Yes, and they look cool. And believe it or not, they’re washable. As best I can tell, they are out of production, but since they will last forever, I’m good. You, my friend, are on your own. Boos Block Cutting Board: It’s big and heavy and the knife just slides across the surface without damaging the blade. A cheap plastic cutting board does the same thing, but the Boos does it better.
Twin-Probe Meat Thermometer: One probe tells me the temp inside the grill or smoker, the other measures the internal temp of the meat. Perfect for 10 pounds of pork shoulder on the smoker low and slow, or I can crank up the heat and add a hightemp probe for grilling steaks. It brings a little high-tech to the backyard barbeque. That’s it, a few of my favorite things. Some are flashy and new, some are simple and old school. Each one has its place in my kitchen and while I could cook without them, I wouldn’t want to. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

t’s easy to think about the environment as an abstract element; when in fact, it is all around us. The environment is at the root of South Dakota’s primary industry: agriculture. Everyday – rain, shine or blizzard – the land is used to produce crops, meat and dairy for South Dakota and beyond. Yet many of us, myself included, are disconnected from this land that shapes what goes into family meals, clothes, makeup, gasoline and more. It is our responsibility to take an interest in and take care of the world around us. Healthy, sustainable farm land is fundamental to a healthy world. Ag United’s goal as a group developed through farm organizations (including the SD Cattleman’s Association, SD Corn Growers Association, SD Farm Bureau, SD Pork Producers Council, SD Soybean Association, SD Dairy Producers, SD Soybean Research & Promotional Council, and South Dakota Poultry Industries Association – (phew, talk about backing) is to reconnect consumers with the farm through booths at events, hosting farm open houses and a website offering events, news and profiles on real farm families. Knowledge is key. Ag United’s stance is to take consumers

directly to their food source – the farmer – for information, rather than to outside interest groups. Farmers also have a responsibility to spread knowledge and share facts about what they do. According to Kelly Wubben of Ag United, theirs is a green story: “Farmers are true environmentalists, thinking always of the longevity of the land, family and future generations. Farmers have to take care of the land and the land has to take care of the farmer.” One way farmers are sharing their stories is through a new resource called The South Dakota Farmers Feed US program, which provides online “virtual” tours with farm and ranch families. Farmers tell their own stories about how they care for the land and their animals at www.farmersfeedus.org. Consumers can also sign up here to win a year’s worth of FREE groceries. In the ever-evolving farm world, education is essential. The Opportunities Farm, a gift to the SDSU Foundation, is an operating 1,120 acre piece of land where students can study issues ranging from environmental impact, livestock stress, and beyond. Paula Loewe, farm office manager, explains that a farm is a place to practice best standards and stewardship of the land. It also offers unique opportunities to recycle, such as reusing oil pipe, guard rail from highway reconstruction or railroad ties as fencing. Farmers are continually looking for ways to improve their operations and better the environment. Loewe explains,

“Farmers can work with the National Resources Conservation Service (nrcs.usda.gov) to come up with a plan to manage farms to be both sustainable and profitable.” Agriculture, to Paula, is “the most important aspect of South Dakota. Producers should always be doing their best to respect their surroundings.” Farmers use an everyday practice of being “green,” by using precision ag technology, which helps farmers use chemicals sparingly and in ways that increase effectiveness. Many farmers feed livestock crops grown on their farm which provide them with manure. The manure, the ultimate recyclable material and most valuable crop nutrient, is carefully applied in a way to most efficiently be used by the land. Virtually nothing is wasted in livestock feeding, and today farmers continue to find new ways to get one more use out of each bushel of grain. Among the latest advances is using co-products from ethanol production called Dried Distillers Grains (DDG) as a part of livestock’s diet. Because of the many advances in technology today, one U.S. farmer feeds 155 people compared to 1950 when one U.S. farmer fed 30 people. Less land is also used while producing more food, American farmers grow 500 percent more corn than they did in 1930 on 20 percent less land. “Because of these advances in technology and the way farmers care for

“I
’ve always been a prairie kind of a guy,” Jeff Scherschligt told me as we walked the prairie at Cherapa Place. It happened to be one of those chilly, windy days in early September that bears the message of what is to come. The thirty-knot wind grabbed shocks of big bluestems and switch grasses and thrashed them over Earth’s arched back with a splendid kinetic energy. It seemed the plants were bent to heave themselves free of their concrete barriers, curbs and sidewalks.
I couldn’t help but think of a phrase from Willa Cather’s novel, My Antonia, when she described the prairie: “… and there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running.” When passing by plants that border the Cherapa Place property, you first notice common plants like ‘Karl Foerster’ grasses and ‘Stella de Oro’ daylilies. There is purpose to this landscape plan developed by Chad Kucker, landscape architect with Confluence.

Familiar plants buffer property margins and make a visual transition from the familiar to what some might consider a strange sort of landscaping: a large prairie in the center of a city. “If we go full prairie right away, some people won’t understand what we are doing,” Jeff explained. “The look is not for everyone. Some probably say, ‘Look at Jeff’s weed patch.’” It’s easy to see irony in this; that prairie plants have become strangers in their own land; that humans have replaced dynamic native plants with static, labor-intensive non-native lawns that have to be mowed and maintained with polluting expensive chemicals – poisons, no less. Cherapa Place is South Dakota’s first LEED (“Green”) building to receive Gold Certification. LEED’s points were awarded in categories of energy and water efficiency and renewable materials to name a few. For the landscape portion, three points were given - one for reducing irrigation needs by one-half, another for having no permanent irrigation system after one year, and the third for maximized open space. At first, for quick growth immediately adjacent to the building at Cherapa Place, they transplanted 1800 four-inch to threegallon “plugs” of big and little bluestem, sideoats grama, switch, and Indian grass. Many were dug from acres that Jeff and his dad developed thirteen years ago as a hunting retreat. Others came from Sustainable Horizons of Lake Norden, SD. “They worked like a charm,” Jeff said. They matured quickly
and soon brushed the faceted slabs of the ancient quartzite that clad the lower exterior of the building. Like a great ship, Cherapa Place rises from its own prairie sea. Directly north of the ship, the sea expands to nearly one acre. Prairie Restorations of Princeton, Minnesota supplied the diverse grass and flowering plant (forbs) seed mixes for this area and Cliff Avenue Greenhouse handled the actual seeding operation and planted all potted plants. In the spring of 2008, seed was “drilled” into the soil at the correct depth and concentration. Broadcast seed would blow around or get eaten by wildlife. The higher bermed area to the east of this expanse, concentrates the taller grasses and forbs. Big bluestem, Indian grass, switch grass, goldenrod, pale purple coneflower and black-eyed Susan are some. The lower flatter, section grows short to intermediate plants such as little bluestem, side oats grama, the little eyelash grass called blue grama, purple prairie clover, long headed coneflower, pasque and purple smoke. Future plans for this space allow for the erection of tents for special events. The prairie would recover if mowed or covered for a day or two. Jeff also envisions this convenient inner-city prairie as a field trip destination for school classes, study groups, and docents. The fall colors were beginning to show the week of my visit. the grassy waves. “Most people never think of that aspect of the prairie, the amazing fall colors,” Jeff said. Little bluestem carried the scene. Angora silk seeds would soon set sail from tips of grassy blades that have turned from green to bronze. It was hard to believe that the maturity and fullness of this prairie had developed after growing for only three seasons. Individual species of grasses had developed into thick natural drifts and intermingled at their margins. “It’s supposed to take five to seven years for forbs (flowering plants) to peak, but already we’ve seen things take off.” Jeff said. A number of flowering plugs had been concentrated near the walkways. Black–eyed Susan, vervain, beebalm, golden rod and asters were still showy this late in the season. Weed control is the primary maintenance. Thistles and ragweed are two of the culprits. They haven’t yet sprayed herbicides in the Cherapa prairie, though they have “painted” the poison on isolated perennial weeds. Otherwise most weed control has been through diligent hand weeding, removing weed seed before it shatters or clipping weeds back before they have a chance to bloom. The calm inside was relief, but the grasses still danced outside my window, vibrant in their element. Grasses evolved with wind. They breeze through high gales and survive tornados. Wind toughens them, strengthens their fiber. Wind blows amidst narrow and tiny leaves that stave off transpiration and dodge hailstones. (Ever see what a hailstorm does to wide hosta leaves?) Wind also breeds them; for grass pollen is dry and depends on air, not insects, to whoosh powdery golden gametes to receptive plants. I sat there for a few minutes to contemplate once-common prairie beauty and wondered this: Sioux quartzite is one of the hardest and oldest stones on earth. You will also find a haunted house, kids activities, and much more. Kidweird features a haunted house suitable for the kids and includes scary games, candy, and a costume contest. If you would also like to stay in a spooky place while visiting, the Best Western Hickok House in Deadwood is ideal. It is said that the ghost of the Hotel’s namesake, Wild Bill Hickok, has been seen on the property. The Bullock Hotel is another option, located on Main Street. Reportedly, the hotel has been the site of various strange and eerie paranormal experiences. Over 70 guests and staff members have claimed to have seen the ghost of Seth Bullock, Deadwood’s first sheriff. The descriptions given in each report of the ghost are eerily similar.
If you are itching to see a haunted mansion in Deadwood, visit the historic Adams House, where you will learn unusual facts while taking an enchanting tour given by the Black Hills Storytellers. On Halloween night everyone is invited to dress up in their costumes and join them for some trick or treating at this haunted mansion. Not far away from Deadwood is Rapid City, where you will find the popular Alex Johnson Hotel. All of the paranormal activity here seems to originate from one place in the hotel - the eighth floor. Legend has it that during the late 1920s, a young bride fell off of the balcony of her eighth floor hotel room on the night of her wedding. Her ghost is said to haunt the hotel, with people reporting seeing her and hearing a woman crying. Also located in Rapid City is Fort Fear, one of South Dakota’s premier

At Custer State Park, you can enjoy a Halloween night hike on October 29 - 30, 2010. This year’s theme is “Every-Birdy Loves Howlloween”. Costumed characters portraying birds that call Custer State Park home will guide you on a one-mile night hike along a paved trail lit only by jack-o-lanterns and tiki torches. Hikers depart from the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center every 15 minutes between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. both nights, making their way to the Game Lodge Campground and back. Located near the city is the Gitchie Manitou State Preserve, full of Native-American history that dates back more than four centuries. This beautiful spread of protected land is said to be filled with the spirits of Native Americans who lived there hundreds of years ago. Scientists have uncovered several artifacts and signs that strongly indicate the area has actually been inhabited for more than 8,000 years. Visitors to the preserve have claimed feeling strange sensations and seeing the apparition of a young man wandering around during the pitch black of night.

W
hen Carol Daly noticed a spider bite on her chest as she was drying off from a morning shower seven years ago, she thought nothing of it. “But when I started to notice pain in my breast like an infection, it got my attention.” She searched the internet to try to learn what it could be, and asked her doctor. “I had the feeling that something wasn’t right,” she said. She scheduled a mammogram, and the results showed a change from previous screenings. A follow-up ultrasound showed a tiny spot, and a biopsy proved it was cancer – namely ductal
carcinoma. “It was only 0.4 cm, but still, whenever you hear the ‘c’ word, the fear almost paralyzes you,” Carol said. Carol’s surgeon reassured her that her cancer was very treatable. “I remember him telling me that I would go through some difficult stuff, but then I could go on with my life. I started to think that maybe this wasn’t a death sentence,” Carol said. She had a lumpectomy, six rounds of chemotherapy and 36 radiation treatments. Because the cancer tested to be estrogen receptor positive, her treatment was followed by Arimidix, which lowers estrogen levels.

ost of us like the thrill of the chill that runs down our spines when presented with a scare, especially during the Halloween holiday. One of the best ways to have a bit of Halloween fun is a good old-fashioned haunted house. You can create one in your yard, your garage, or even inside your home. Although you are never too old to enjoy a clean, fun fright, Halloween is the season when kids too love to be scared, spooked and startled. However, there is a thin line between an innocent spook and a childhood trauma. Make sure you know your limits and plan ahead to get to know your participants. Consider the tolerance levels of small children, and encourage the people who might be acting with scary costumes to every once in awhile show their faces and comfort the child by giving them a small treat and a smile. Coming up with ideas for a haunted house, creating it, and performing the roles is as much fun for kids as walking through it. Have a guide take small groups through the haunted house, narrating as they go. Lighting is probably the most effective special effect. Use flashlights, colored light bulbs, green spotlights, and night lights to create low lighting that is safe enough but highlights the scary things. Make sure you have the capability to turn up the lights in case the kids that are pushed a bit too far, or give each child their own light to hold to give them a sense of security while wandering through your dimly lit creation. Glowin-the-dark paint, chalk, or stars are inexpensive and will go far at your haunted house when spattered all over an area. A black light will also create wonderful entertainment for the kids. Creating just the right atmosphere in your haunted house is half the battle. Eerie sounds and other spooky effects also add to the excitement. Play spooky music or have sound effects
soundtracks, which you can find at any Halloween store. Start out with a bit of entry way fun. Cut a piece of garbage bag big enough to fit your entry way and hang it up. Cut thin strips in the plastic from the bottom going up so people can now pass through to get to the other room. Another idea for

your entry way or even every doorway is to hang up black or white thread, giving the feeling of walking into cobwebs. Yellow caution tape is also a nice touch to the outside of your haunted house. Create some giant spiders by hanging store-made spider webs or unraveled cotton balls in narrow spaces and hallways and using styrofoam balls and pipe cleaners suspended from fishing line or thread as the creepy creatures. A hidden helper can cause the spiders to fall on the visitors by holding a fishing pole and dropping them down sporadically. Set up gravestones made from cereal boxes painted gray with creative headstone markings in a dark room or in your backyard. For an extra spooky effect, rent a fog machine and add tiki torches. Gather up old science fair equipment including beakers and tubes, and anything in your kitchen resembling a scientist’s lab. Have someone volunteer to be a mad scientist and wear a wild white wig and a lab coat. Fill jars with various colored liquids and
drop items into them such as doll parts or stuffed toys. Light the jars from behind with string lights. The kids will enjoy exploring the potions and concoctions. Also set out a few edible potions such as green juice or green or black olives for them to try. You can also set up a Frankenstein workshop with gross body parts mimicked by cooked spaghetti, peeled oranges and grapes, and other foods. Have your guests put their hands into these slimy and gooey things for a hands-on experience. An eerie witch’s room with someone dressed in a witch costume, telling a scary story while stirring a black, plastic Halloween cauldron can be a great effect to scare the children. Fill the cauldron with water and a glow stick, to make the water glow. Some might opt for dry ice for an even spookier effect, but this might be dangerous because it is not supposed to be handled with bare hands. Decorate the room with witch accessories such as a broom, a black cat, and other items. Create walls and passageways by using black, plastic

One of the scariest effects is to simply have costumed “actors” stand or sit motionless throughout your haunted house, and incorporate props and dummies so the visitors are confused by what’s real and what’s not. The actors only have to make just slight moves, or slowly sneak up behind people to scare them. It would be a good idea to warn your actors to never touch anyone who is already frightened as they walk through, because it could be dangerous and lead to other issues. Remember to keep your haunted house simple and appropriately cheesy to accomplish the good feeling of the Halloween spirit and a slight fright along the way. With some creativity, good planning, and patience, your haunted house will be a true success. Creativity and a desire to scare people will also come in handy. Happy haunting!

Counting Calories
First of all, the best time to start making healthy lifestyle choices is long before you are actually pregnant. As early as six months before pregnancy, a woman should make sure she is eating a healthy diet and cutting out risky behaviors such as smoking and alcohol use to make sure her body is ready for a baby. She should also take a prenatal vitamin with at least 400 micrograms of folic acid, a supplement that can help prevent neural tube defects. If you’re already pregnant, don’t worry, it’s not too late to make healthy changes that can benefit both you and your baby. Your physician will talk to you about appropriate weight gain in pregnancy. The normal healthy weight gain for a pregnant woman is between 25 and 35 pounds. However, women who are underweight may need to gain more while overweight women may be advised not to gain any weight at all.
In general, pregnant women should opt for a diet that includes plenty of calcium, fruits and vegetables, as well as meats and fish. Calories are the number one most important nutritional factor in determining a healthy birth weight for your baby. The average pregnant woman needs 350 more calories a day during the second trimester of pregnancy and 450 more calories during the third trimester. When you’re looking to add those extra calories, do it with the best food choices, adding more dairy products, fruits and vegetables and grains instead of fast foods or three scoops of ice cream at bedtime. Babies who are a healthy weight at birth have the very best outcomes. They’re healthier overall, tend to breastfeed better and are most capable of regulating their own bodies.

DHA and Fish Use some moderation in eating fish while pregnant. Fish is high in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid that is good for your baby’s brain and eye development. However, certain types of fish also have high mercury levels which are thought to negatively affect the brain and nervous system. The safest fish for pregnant women are shrimp, salmon, catfish and canned light tuna. Eating two meals a week of these lower mercury level fish can give you the benefits fish can offer without the dangers. Food borne illnesses of all types can be more dangerous for pregnant women, making safe handling of food even more important. Raw or rare fish or meat is not safe, so make sure to cook your food thoroughly. Washing fruits and vegetables and avoiding unpasteurized dairy products or fruit juices will also help protect your health and the health of your growing baby.

Avoiding Problems Some types of foods have little or no place in a pregnant woman’s diet. While few randomized controlled studies have been done on caffeine use during pregnancy, doctors think that there is a link between excessive caffeine and preterm births or small birth-weight babies. Physicians generally recommend limiting yourself to 200 mg of caffeine per day – which equates to two small cups of regular coffee or four small cups of black tea – while pregnant. Few tests have been done on artificial sweeteners during pregnancy. While most doctors don’t suggest cutting out all sodas or food items that include sugar substitutes, using these in moderation is probably a good idea.
Alcohol should simply be avoided. While we know that large amounts of alcohol can cause mental retardation and/or physical abnormalities on a growing baby, we really don’t have studies that tell us what amount is safe. The safest thing to do for your baby is simply not to drink during pregnancy.

H
ow does a little boy growing up on a dairy farm in New York, grow up to be the Curator of Education of the Siouxland Heritage Museums? Would you believe because of the movie Dances with Wolves? As a child, Kevin Gansz could be found in front of the TV devouring any history shows he could find. When it was time to make college plans, he saw the movie, Dances with Wolves. The rest was, well, shall we say, history. I sat down with Kevin at the Old Courthouse Museum, to learn more about his love of South Dakota history, and maybe uncover its mystery.
So, how does a New York boy end up in a place like this? I grew up in Lyons, NY. Since I was the littlest of kids I had an interest in history. When I was looking at colleges is the same time that Dances with Wolves came out. It was my first experience with knowing what land in South Dakota looked like. I was intrigued by the idea that there were places in this

country where you could go and still not be within sight of civilization. I ended up at Augustana where I majored in history and education.
How did you become associated with the museum? I actually did student teaching here. I thought the only thing you could do with a history degree was teach. I worked part time at the museum, and found out that it was another great option. By 1997, I had a full time job here.
Jump into my time machine back to your favorite time of Sioux Falls history, Kevin. Where are we? We are back in the 1880s. We are at the heart of the city, 9th and Phillips. You can see it is a boom time here, with buildings going up, people, and horses. It doesn’t smell the best. Over a 1,000 people come every year from all over; even Europe! People of distinction stay at the Cataract Hotel. Some make speeches from the balcony.

Where is the “in place” to live here in the 1880s? Oh, up on “The Hill” in the Cathedral District, North to around 10th street. You can get out of dirty, stinky bustling downtown and catch a breath of fresh air. People of wealth and standing build their homes there. Duluth Avenue is also called Charge or Society Street. To have that address is to have enough money to charge downtown.
Let’s head back to the Old Courthouse Museum in 2010. It is that “haunted time” of the year. Anything spooky you’d like to share? Well, the building we are in can be kind of eerie. Prior to 1889, before there was a museum here, this was the site of public execution in Sioux Falls. At least three people were hanged at this site — and one was innocent.
What happened? Thomas Eagan was accused of killing his wife. He claimed

he was innocent. They hanged him three times! The first time the rope broke. The second time a deputy inadvertently broke his fall. The third time was the end of Thomas Eagan. On her deathbed, his stepdaughter solved the mystery when she admitted she had quarreled with her mother and killed her.
And to this day you can hear him protesting his innocence? Well, I don’t know, but it’s quite a story.
I know the museum has some Halloween plans. Tell me about them. We have the Haunted Bus Tour in October. We take people on an hour-long tour of alleged haunted sites, mostly downtown. We do the haunted tour with a “believe it or not” attitude. Information is presented as it has been given to us. A lot of it centers on historical structures and public buildings where people have had scary experiences.
Can you share your stories? We are kind of tight-lipped, but I would just say some of the
stories are from credible people who have had experiences that can’t be explained away very easily. They are some of our best stories.
Do you have anything especially for the kids? Yes, we have a Halloween party here scheduled for Sunday Oct 31st. It’s free and includes treats, activities and a costume contest.
I hear you have a new program this year. Tell me about it. Yes! We have a new program debuting called the Ghosts and Graves tour which will take place at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. We are going to have local actors portray colorful characters from Sioux Falls history who are buried in the cemetery. Expect to be guided by lantern light to meet them and hear about their lives.
It sounds like history can be fun and interesting. Your career has included everything from wolves to graves. I guess so! You could say history has so much to offer, well, it’s….scary.

t only took a few seconds for Piper to find an open toilet and take a big drink. A disgusting move, but the bowl had cleaner solution in it! Our pets can get themselves into a lot of trouble with normal everyday items in our homes. Cleaning solutions are very caustic and cause damage to the mouth, esophagus and stomach. My knee jerk reaction was to have her vomit immediately to get it out of her system. The first thing to do should be to call your veterinarian, the Pet Poison Hotline and the company’s customer service number on the side of the bottle. After getting all of the advice, I gave her milk to drink to balance the pH and a moderate amount of water to further dilute the product ingested. She is fine and has not missed a beat. Eating their owners’ medications is another common poisoning that we encounter. Tylenol and Advil are common medications that are consumed. It is difficult to find the

attraction to a plastic bottle and bitter medicine, but dogs apparently like it. Tylenol or acetaminophen is very toxic to your pet’s liver. It also can interfere with the red blood cells’ ability to carry oxygen. If they consume enough, their blood will be the color of chocolate milk. Quick therapy and medicating with the antidote can minimize the damage. Advil or ibuprofen is also very toxic to the kidneys of dogs and cats. Even a small dosage can cause damage and a large amount will totally destroy them. If you suspect ingestion, call immediately and start IV fluids. Bolts, nuts and screws are not very tasty, but pets like to consume them. The newer hardware and pennies contain zinc. The zinc will destroy the red blood cells in the body and if it is not surgically removed it will kill your pet. Often we find them by accident when x-rays are taken. Antifreeze is always a danger, but especially in the fall as we
prepare for the cold weather. 1 or 2 tablespoons is lethal to a medium sized dog. At the beginning it does not appear to be a problem. In 24 hours the ethylene glycol portion of antifreeze will crystallize and destroy the kidneys. There are no home remedies and time is not on your side. Take them immediately to your veterinarian. Quick and appropriate treatment can minimize the damage. Plants can also be a source of toxins for our pets. The list is too long to go over, but you should make an inventory of your houseplants and research their potential toxicity. A good rule of thumb is to not allow your pets to consume any houseplant. At a minimum they can cause irritation to their stomach. If you suspect that your pet has ingested something, call immediately. It is always appropriate to treat aggressively and quickly to prevent any damage to your pets body. The Pet Poison Hotline is 800-213-6680. Keep them Safe.

n March 6, 1934, John Dillinger led five other gangsters in a brazen daylight robbery of the Security National Bank. Arriving in a stolen 1934 Packard, Dillinger and three men entered the bank lobby. All wore turned-down, widebrimmed felt hats to conceal their identities and long overcoats to hide their weapons. One gang member shouted, “This is a hold up!” Instantly a bank employee touched a security button and set off a clamorous alarm. Angered, the bandits ordered about 30 bank employees and customers to raise their hands and to stand facing a wall. Lester Gillis, a.k.a. “Baby Face Nelson,” then spotted motorcycle police officer Hale Keith running toward the bank
in response to the alarm. Gillis wounded Keith by firing a burst from his Thompson submachine gun through a large plate glass north window. “St. Paul Tommy“ Carroll patrolled in front of the YMCA Block on the southeast corner of the intersection. For crowd control, he periodically fired a submachine gun to keep hundreds of onlookers at bay. He also held hostage several bystanders and lawmen. To ensure their getaway, the bandits forced five bank employees to stand as human shields on the Packard running boards. They fired at pursuing law enforcement vehicles and scattered roofing nails to disable them. The gang netted $49,500 from the heist.

(2) Dillinger and three of his confederates entered the bank using the building’s original main entrance. After police officer Hale Keith heard the bank’s alarm, he ran from the Police Station and crossed Ninth Street toward the bank.
