he story behind the name of Kaladi’s Coffee Legend and Bistro is a time honored one among coffee lovers. It goes that many years ago in a faraway place, a humble goat herder named Kaldi noticed his flock was wildly energetic after eating the bright red berries from a shrub. After trying the berries himself with much the same result, Kaldi shared his findings with a passerby monk. The ingenious monk conducted dozens of experiments with the berries before finally stumbling upon the process for making - you guessed it - coffee. While no one knows what happened to the real Kaldi, we’re certain he would be pleased to know his name is immortalized by one of Sioux Falls’ enduring coffee and dining success stories. The original Kaladi’s, located on 26th St. and Minnesota Avenue, opened its doors in March of 2003. Founded by the father/daughter team of Chuck Bahnson and Susie Patrick, the original vision for Kaladi’s, according to Patrick, was to be a

“cute little coffee shop,” but it wouldn’t take long before the store’s growth and success would put its owners in a position of running “a full scale restaurant business.” After building a loyal following at the Minnesota Avenue location, Bahnson and Patrick decided to expand in 2005, opening a second Kaladi’s store on south Main Avenue. The addition of the downtown site brought a new clientele to the business, but for Patrick, the secret to success remained the same. “Our goal has always been to create a locally-owned coffee shop that has a big city feel. We want our customers to feel comfortable when they are here and know that they are going to enjoy something fresh and delicious.” In April of this year, Patrick decided to move the location of the downtown restaurant to 200 S. Phillips. “It was just an opportunity we could not pass up. The corner space on Phillips and 10th makes it that much easier for our customers to find us.” The new location has the familiar Kaladi’s comforts: conventional tables and chairs mixed with cushier seating, and even a coffee bar where customers can sit or stand depending on their preference. Those wishing to commiserate with their laptop can take advantage of the WiFi access and businesses looking for a place to hold a small offsite meeting can utilize the conference room. Menu options at both Kaladi’s stores are the same with breakfast options including some newer twists such as Belgian

waffles and French toast along with familiar standards such as egg paninis and frittatas. The lunch fare includes soups (the tomato basil and Kaladi’s chili are favorites), salads, wraps, and sandwiches (the Kaladi – a turkey sandwich with a generous mix of avocado, tomato and other veggie fixings comes highly recommended). For a dash of the sweet, the Kaladi’s Special K bar is perfect by itself or as the finishing touch to a satisfying meal “I think the thing that makes us special is that we’re local and everything we make is fresh. Nothing comes from a box or a bag. We use a local baker for all our bread (Breadsmith) and everything we use was made fresh that day,” notes Patrick. Finally, there is the coffee. Both Kaladi’s stores get their coffee from Alterra Coffee Roasters a premium roaster from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Patrick again points to freshness as a selling point with Alterra, “They roast, pack, and ship our coffee to us the day we order it. Alterra prides themselves on robust, fresh coffee and that’s why we use them exclusively.” With its two locations, Kaladi’s makes it easier than ever for patrons to enjoy the fresh fare and stimulating brew that has made it a Sioux Falls favorite for nearly a decade. ometimes it is easy to forget what relaxation feels like. It’s a sensation that comes far too rarely for most of us. The need to “get away” is something just about everyone feels in their hearts and minds, but the process of finding the right place can often be just as stressful and difficult as the workaday world we hope to escape. But for those that are looking to get away, but not too far away, there is an answer – Northwoods Vista. Northwoods Vista is situated on 80 acres of breathtaking private land near Newton Hills state park, 45 minutes from Sioux Falls. It features a beautifully appointed earth-home cabin with spectacular views of the surrounding hill country. Owner Shirley De Weerd and her husband Kevin originally bought the property from a neighbor who began the original construction of the cabin. Working on the cabin became a “labor of love” for the De Weerds as they spent a year creating the welcoming place it is today. “We used it as our own retreat for quite some time, but as we grew to be empty nesters, I thought to myself, ‘this place has brought so much peace and joy to our family, it seems selfish not to share it with others.’” Sitting on the outdoor patio, the sensation of peace and tranquility makes an immediate impression. De Weerd explains that the attraction of Northwoods Vista is powerful but difficult for her return guests to put into words. “When I ask people about their stay, the first word out of their mouth is almost always, ‘Wow’ and then there is usually a pause and a smile. I think they leave relaxed and recharged. Everyone comes for different reasons, but in the end, they get what they need.” Northwoods Vista is a perfect venue for couples, families, or a small group of friends looking for a relaxing retreat. “Often times we’ll get groups of women who are out for a gals’ getaway,” noted De Weerd. “They enjoy letting their hair down, having a glass of wine, and enjoying the comfort of the cabin and the

peace and quiet of the outdoors.” Northwoods Vista can also provide the perfect compromise for “mixed marriages” – those unions between outdoor loving husbands and creature-comfort loving wives. “The guys can enjoy the woods and hunting grounds while the wives kick back

innovative, one-of-a-kind furniture. While the overall remodel project has been a happy and productive collaboration for both, it’s also been a steady process. A vast majority of the house has been taken down to the studs, with one room being remodeled at any given time. The Williams’ opted to set their own due date for the overall transformation,

because they never felt pressured into having a particular deadline in order to finish the project. “We just wanted to go at our own pace,” said Christy. “We basically started from scratch, so it’s definitely been a process. But, all of the work we’ve put into it has made it so worth while. We know that wouldn’t have been the case if we would have purchased a newer home.”

An auspicious bid and click of the mouse led to the purchase of the chair, as only a total of 15 bidders were awarded the rare find that day. A few years back, Christy and her husband found a Herman Miller coffee table at auction for $1.50. Soon after, they realized its worth was in the near vicinity of $1,200. Since then, the couple has developed into seekers of absurd bargains and have found numerous mid-century items and Eames chairs that cost less than half of what they’re worth. “We’ve been able to find things that are different but also economically smart,” said Thane. “For example, we found a 1965 Eames aluminum chair in a pile of garbage outside someone’s home. We‘ve found a majority of items that way - whether it be at auction, a flea market, or off-beat stores we’ve come across

There are so many wine terms, grape names, and wine-growing regions that are not only hard to pronounce but can be misheard very easily. So, this month, I hope to demystify some of the challenging lexicon associated with the wonderful world of wine. Let’s start off with an easy one: Malbec. I remember first hearing about this grape about seven or eight years ago when Argentina was starting to ferment this grape as a 100% bottling. I also remember hearing all sorts of mutations of the name of this grape. At first I thought it was Melbac. Then I heard a wine sales rep call it Malbac. Then someone else corrected him and said it was pronounced Melbec. Long story short, it sounds the

way it looks: MAHL-BECK. Pretty easy, right? This little grape was originally used in France as a blending grape but now stands on its own especially in Argentina. By the way, this is the best wine you’ve never had. Ask for it by name at your favorite restaurant or search the South American section at your favorite wine store — you won’t be sorry. Next up… Meritage. At first glance, looks pretty easy, but again, this is one of those words that evolved and was actually coined for very specific wines from California. Meritage is a proprietary term used to denote red and white Bordeaux-style wines without infringing on the Bordeaux (France) region’s legally protected designation of origin. Winemakers must license the Meritage trademark from its owner, the California-based Meritage Alliance. And just for the record, it’s not pronounced with a French accent; it’s pronounced like the word ‘heritage.’ Give it a try!

There are a host of grapes that are commonly mispronounced but are easily learned. Here’s a quick lesson: Merlot… the ‘t’ is silent, please, with a long ‘o.’ Cabernet… again, the ‘t’ is silent and is pronounced CAB-ER-NAY. Pinot Noir… this one’s kind of funny: PEE-NO-NOO-ARE, now say it fast! Shiraz… if you’re from Down Under, it’s SURE-AS. Chianti… KEY-YAHN-TEE Bordeaux… BORE-DOH Côtes du Rhône… COAT-DEW-ROHN Tempranillo… TEMPRA-NEE-YOH Carmenere… CAR-MEN-AIR Chardonnay… SHAR-DUN-AY Sauvignon Blanc… SOHV-EEN-YAWN BLAH-NK Pinot Grigio… PEE-NO GREE-GEE-OH Riesling… REECE-LING Albariño… AHL-BAH-REEN-YOH Chablis… SHAH-BLEE Here’s a tricky one…Gewürztraminer. I know it looks like a mouthful, but if you split it up into two parts, it becomes much easier: Gewurz and Traminer. In fact, the Traminer grape is originally from Italy, but the Gewürztraminer grape is predominant in France (Alsace) and Germany who make a nice

dry white wine with strong aromas of apricots and pears and has a spicy finish on the palate. Next time you ask for one, ask for a GEVURTZ-TRAH-MEAN-ER, or you can just say GEVURTZ for short. Lastly, there is a wonderful wine-growing region in one of the most northern points in Italy called Alto Adige. Known for spectacularly crisp Pinot Grigio, and a predominantly German speaking area, Alto Adige is part of the larger northeastern Italian region known as Tre Venezie (Three Venices.) Other Pinot Grigio producing subregions in this area include Trentino, Friuli, and Veneto. Alto Adige is commonly mispronounced which is a shame because one of the world’s best Pinot Grigio’s comes from there: the fabulous Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio. Here is your pronunciation guide for Alto Adige: ALTO AH-DEE-JEH. The rule when pronouncing Italian words is to always put the emphasis on the first syllable. To become fluent in any language, you must immerse yourself in the culture in order to absorb every idiosyncrasy the language has to offer. The more diverse your wine selections, the more fluent and proficient you will become in the language of wine. Don’t get stuck in a rut. Take the road less traveled. Explore the expansive world of wine and try something new. Like Mae West said, “I’ll try anything once, twice if I like, three times to make sure.” Carpe Vino! Quick & Easy Summer Sandwiches

Tomato Bacon Melts 2 bagels or English muffins, split and toasted 8 slices of tomato 8 slices of bacon, cooked 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

These simple and delicious recipes will help you get out of the kitchen and out enjoying summer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in record time.

Place the bagel or muffin cut side up on a baking sheet. Top each with two slices of tomato and two slices of bacon. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top and broil 5-6 inches from the heat for 1-2 minutes or until cheese is melted. May serve with ranch dressing if desired. Serves 4.

Grilled Ham, Apple and Cheese Sandwich

Three Cheese Grilled Sandwich

1 cup chopped tart firm apple 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup chopped walnuts 8 slices of your choice of bread 8 slices American cheese 4 slices of cooked ham 1/4 cup softened butter

3 oz. package of cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup mayo 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/8 tsp seasoned salt 10 slices of bread of your choice 3 Tbsp softened butter

Combine the apples, mayo and walnuts in a small bowl. Place a slice of cheese on four slices of the bread and layer with 1/3 cup of the apple mixture, a slice of ham and then another slice of cheese and then top with the remaining bread slices. Butter the outsides of the sandwiches and grill over medium heat until bread is lightly browned and cheese is melted. Serves 4.

love to cook. I find that my time in the kitchen can be cathartic; chopping and mincing and grinding. At other times, it is a creative outlet. That may seem strange for a guy who makes a living coming up with ideas and being paid for my creativity, but when I’m in the kitchen, it’s a different kind of creative. It’s not a headline that will be read by thousands. There is no pressure for “return on investment.” When I’m cooking, my creativity is just for me. Sure, I usually share the fruits of my labor with my family and friends, but deep down, I’m doing it for me. Sometimes when I cook, I feel atavistic. I will fire up the grill; man conquers fire and harnesses its heat for his power. There is something very primal about meat cooked over fire. Maybe that’s why I lean towards rare meat, I still want to see the flesh and feel the texture in my teeth. Other times I will, quite literally, wake up with an idea for a meal. If the dream gods are smiling on me, I’ll have the

ingredients in the fridge or pantry. Other times it requires several trips to specialty stores. Sometimes the results are great. Other times, we end up feeding a lot of well-intentioned, expensive ingredients to the dog. At worst, we won’t even feed it to the dog. Often, my inspiration comes from the ingredients I find as I shop. And for me, shopping is an adventure. On my typical summer Saturday morning, I get up early, visit a restaurant or coffee shop for breakfast, and then head to the Falls Park Farmers Market. I’ll carefully choose locally grown onions, carrots, patty pan squash and zucchini. I’ll take a few minutes to chat with the vendors who produce this vegetable bounty, many with dirt still under their fingernails. Then it’s off to the bread store and then across the parking lot to the Natural Foods Coop. At each stop I chat with the friendly staff and other jovial shoppers. Now I head further south to my favorite butcher shop. When I

enter the door and am greeted with “Good morning Mr. Mathis, so what’s for dinner tonight?” “I don’t know yet, what looks good today?” I might walk out with fresh fish or lamb or beef, or maybe the veal I dreamt about. I will peer through the glass cases like a kid in a candy store. I’ll make my choice and engage in some small talk with the guys at the shop then I’m off. On my way back home I may stop at the wine shop to pick up a few bottles and chat with the proprietor. She knows her wine and always has great recommendations. And I always stop for wine last, that way I at least know what we’re eating even if I don’t know how it will be prepared. At each of the stops on my Saturday morning rounds, I’m looking for quality ingredients and the shopping experience. And I’m not just talking to clerks; they’re craftsmen and artisans, caring stewards of the land and knowledgeable experts. And each of those experts lends some of their wisdom to my kitchen. Back home, with the trunk of my small car loaded with goodies, I get to work. The veggies get a good washing, and depending on the meat I bought, I may rub the steaks or marinate the poultry. The creativity begins. I start to think about how can I best enjoy each item? What herbs will bring out their flavor? Should I grill this or pickle that? I may grab the laptop for a little research—recently I stumbled on some beautiful looking

lamb ribs but had no idea what to do with them. At times like that, Google can be a cook’s best friend. On those first warm spring days, I’ll often plan my menu around things I can cook entirely outdoors. Or a cold winter Sunday may lead me to a big pot of soup to keep us warm through the week. If I’m feeling mischievous, I might try to surprise my wife with one of her favorites when she thought I was making something else. The point is, no matter what I am cooking, I look at my time in the kitchen not as work, but as fun. So that’s why I cook. I know a lot of you are working moms, just trying to get a meal on the table between the eight-to-five career and soccer/band/homework/PTA. But find a little time, one night a week (or even once a month) when you kick the kids and hubby out of the kitchen and cook for the sheer joy of cooking. Create a meal that makes you happy. Who cares if the kids won’t eat it? Make your husband turn off NASCAR and set the table. Have fun in the kitchen for once. You deserve it. They deserve it. am not shy about my love of food. I don’t, however, always love food that loves back. Luckily for me, there are choices out there that are good for me and the environment. I’m looking at some ways we can work healthy living food into our diets, whether we are shopping the grocery aisle or the drive up window. Dinner is looking greener all the time. Many recognizable names in the food industry are getting a makeover. Thus “green” is no longer just a philosophy toted by longhaired hippies or college freshmen, it is going corporate. Big business is feeling pressure from the government, environmental groups, and consumers to have a greener image. The business of burgers and fries has gotten a bad rap in environmental sectors. McDonald’s is the largest purchaser of beef in America, so they know a thing or two about the industry. McDonalds.com has several links with titles like “The Road to Sustainability” and “Greener Than Ever.” Perhaps all this green-talk is more than just hype. Newsweek’s “Green Rankings 2009” named McDonald’s 22nd (out of 500 of America’s largest corporations, online at greenrankings.newsweek.com) based on such actions as purchasing fish from sustainable fisheries, buying cattle raised without destroying rainforests, and announcing intent to reduce pesticide and styrofoam use. Burger King (bk.com) also strives to develop “changes that will be positive on the environment without compromising operational standards.” It remains to be seen whether these fast food giants will blaze a green trail or just make a sound byte. I am not advocating the drive thru window as an act of environmentalism, but we

ho hasn’t gloried in the precious blue of morning glory flowers, the same hue as that of rare lapis lazuli, the stone ground into pigment by medieval artists to paint the cloak of the Virgin Mary? But this cherished color of a modest virgin rides in on a rambunctious plant. Tendrils quickly elongate and corkscrew their way to the top of any wire, string, or stem. They are picture perfect on a white picket fence or a solution for camouflaging a tar-soaked telephone post. Each morning glory flower is made up of five fused petals that open into wide funnel shapes. They hug dense leafy columns like blue brooches pinned onto a green mohair coat. A blur of white dots the centers. After a single day, funnels collapse and twist closed like wrung out dishrags to protect the fertilized ova. Later in the season, one can easily harvest plump seeds to save for next year’s vines. While the Aztecs used certain Ipomoea seeds for their hallucinogenic properties, seeds are toxic and potentially lethal. The familiar blue morning glory and other annual vine relatives, also called granny vines, listed below are from the genus/species Ipomoea tricolor (Ipomoea derives from Greek ips meaning “a worm” and homo for “like” – “worm like”). They

are in the family Convolvulaceae (derived from Latin, convolere, meaning “to entwine”), which contains several hundred members mostly from the tropics and subtropics. Here we grow them as annuals (though the common noxious weed, field bindweed is in this family and unfortunately a hardy perennial). The blue of morning glory vines is also precious for the long time we must wait for flowers to develop on the vines, as long as three months from seed. Never fear, early June is soon enough to get seeds planted, but don’t put it off much longer. In future years you might start seeds early in peat pots and transplant them in late May when ground has sufficiently warmed to trick plants into believing they are still in their native latitudes. Soak the extremely hard seeds for 24 hours before planting. Loosen soil where they are to grow, and press seeds a half-inch deep. If soil is sufficiently warm, they will sprout in a week, and tiny tendrils will soon “feel” the air around them and reach for the sparest of support, anything they can grasp, ready to explode into wall-covering possibilities. Once rooted in, morning glory vines are tolerant of poor dry soils. Rich soils and fertilizer encourage too much foliage and flowers will be few. Full to half day sun allows greatest vigor. Next to a hot sidewalk or driveway where soil is extra warm, they’ll

grow even faster. Once established, average rainfall is sufficient. Ipomoea tricolor ‘Heavenly Blue’ is always a worthy choice and commonly found in nursery seed racks. Unique ‘Tie Dye’ swirls lavender through blue and leaves splash white on green. Like a loud dresser, some plants just know how to attract extra attention. ‘Pearly Gates’, a mutation of ‘Heavenly Blue’, has snowy petals with cream throats. ‘Scarlet O’Hara’ is red. ‘Grandpa Ott’s’ is an old heirloom morning glory of magnificent blue color. Another old species goes by “choice mix.” After seed over-wintered where it was dropped in Perennial Passion’s garden, seedlings sprouted profusely. Vines clambered into the tall grasses, circumnavigated the thorny canes of tall and short roses, and completely covered over portions of the woven wire fence. But we tolerated their nuisance because purple, pink, and magenta flowers greeted me each summer morning when I walked through that special garden where the sun always seemed to shine. Their colors were pure and fresh, having just opened in the early light. Occasionally a newcomer annual morning glory promises flowers in a shorter time period than the old fashioned ones, but I’ve never confirmed these claims. ‘Hatsu Arashi’ is an award winning morning glory from Japan that claims flowers in less than six weeks after sowing. ‘Early Call’ supposedly blooms at a

shorter height and therefore earlier. At Perennial Passion we sold morning glory plants growing in four-inch containers. Young vines quickly wormed their way upward, twining all over each other like masses of snakes writhing together during a spring breeding frenzy. Untangling them was tricky, the vines that is. We learned to give each pot a wide space and long thin bamboo for climbing. But to our surprise, after plants grew in small pots for only a few weeks and vines were less than a couple of feet long, they began to bloom. Customers were delighted to find them in flower and took them home, but once roots were given freedom in unconfined soil, blooming subsided until later. We deduced that, like other plants we knew, pot-bound roots often force early flowering. Though I never tried this experiment, I’ve often suggested it: submerge various sizes of plastic containers filled with soil to ground level, and plant seeds in each. Compare the date of flower onset and heights reached. I’ve also wondered if lowering the height of the support system would encourage earlier blooming. If any of you experiment with either of the two above ideas, let me know and I’ll report on it. How sweet it is; summer is here at last. May these next few months of days be as precious as the blue of morning glory.

where both are approximately one mile of leisurely paced trails beginning at the parking lot and going over the sand dunes. The 360-foot boardwalk is for those who prefer a shorter trip off of the sand, including interpretive displays with information about the plants and animals in the area. End with a rest on a bench with a great view of the dunes. On certain dune faces in the park, hang-gliding is allowed with approval. At the top of the ridge, kite flying is the popular thing to try with the fantastic views and the perfect wind. Jockey’s Ridge is one of the best places on the Outer Banks to fly kites. And watch out for fulgurites, which are hollow tubes that are formed when lightning strikes the sand. If you see one, make sure to notify park staff, since these are considered museum material! Another great spot to visit is the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. Through its theme, Water of the Outer Banks, this beautiful aquarium presents the aquatic environments of coastal Carolina with a variety of exhibits that educate and entertain visitors. From freshwater turtles, alligators and otters to saltwater sharks and fish, there are interactive opportunities for children and adults to enjoy. History buffs will get a kick out of the one-third scale replica of the USS Monitor. A personal look at the Outer Banks hurricanes and other weather happenings is provided through Storms. Dive shows and live animal encounters will keep you at the aquarium wanting to see what’s next. The newest exhibit, Sharks!, opened in May of 2010 and includes new shark species and an underwater “Shark Cage” for a great photo opportunity. One of over 390 parks in the National Park System, the Wright Brothers National Memorial on the Outer Banks is the site of the world’s first controlled powered flights. On December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers taught the world to fly. Museum exhibits such as an engine block from the original 1903 Flyer, as well as reproductions of the 1902 glider, the Wright’s first wind tunnel, their living quarters and hanging glide are interesting things to see. Make sure to climb Big Kill Devil Hill for an astounding view of the area. At the top you will find the 60 ft. Pylon, which is the site where Wilber and Orville Wright conducted their

glider experiments. A large granite boulder marks the spot where the first plane left the ground. Located only a few miles south of the Wright Brothers National Memorial are the islands of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The sandy beaches, salt marshes and maritime woods are just waiting to be explored and reflected upon. Abundant with lighthouses, shells, fishing spots, and peaceful places to relax, there are a variety of things to do on the seashore. Handbooks are available for shelling and exploring the beaches. Birding is a year-round activity at the seashore with many fantastic species to seek out. The historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a unique experience involving 248 iron spiral stairs to climb to get to the top of a 12 story building for a magnificent view. Take a tour of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Light with its distinctive black and white bands. Ocracoke, the first of the Outer Bank’s lights, is the oldest operating lighthouse on the North Carolina coast and the second oldest lighthouse in continuous service in the United States. Its fixed white light is visible from fourteen miles away. Although this 65-foot tall tower is closed to the public, the grounds are open year-round. Perhaps you would want to see the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green’s The Lost Colony for a fabulous Outer Banks experience. This compelling drama has something for the entire family, with detailed costumes, hilarious comedy, music and dancing. The story recounts the exciting events leading to the disappearance of the English colonists who settled here over 400 years ago. First staged in 1937, The Lost Colony is the nation’s longestrunning symphonic drama. Performed at Manteo’s Waterside Theatre, the outdoor show is both educational and entertaining. his summer, many women wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even dream of wearing skirts, capris or shorts, let alone a swimsuit due to troublesome veins that mar the appearance of their legs, and worse yet, make legs feel achy, painful and swollen. Up to 50 percent of American women experience vein conditions such as varicose veins and spider veins, said Dr. Dawn Flickema, family practitioner with Avera McGreevy Clinic at 69th and Western in Sioux Falls. Yet thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effective treatment thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much quicker and easier than your grandmother might have experienced in her day. Varicose veins are veins that bulge out from the skin and cause symptoms such as pain, itching, aching, tiredness, cramping or restlessness. They are related to venous insufficiency, which typically happens when valves in a vein fail, explained Dr. Matthew Casey, an interventional radiologist at Veradia Interventional Radiology and Vein Center, a partner of Medical X-Ray Center in Sioux Falls. Valves in the legs are designed to prevent backflow of blood as it flows uphill to the heart. When

these valves fail, excess blood pools in leg veins, causing them to bulge. Spider veins are related to varicose veins, only they involve smaller blood vessels. Spider veins may be a painless cosmetic nuisance, or they may appear in large complexes that are inflamed and painful, Dr. Flickema said. Dr. Flickema said varicose veins are often an inherited condition. Pregnancy is a risk factor, because the pressure of the baby sitting on pelvic blood vessels adds to the pressure in the legs. In fact, Dr. Casey said, women who have had four or more pregnancies have a 60 percent chance of getting varicose veins, compared to a 10 to 15 percent chance in women who have never been pregnant. Weight gain in the abdomen has a similar effect. Men can also have varicose veins, but less often than women. People who have standing occupations â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like teachers, cashiers, nurses or lab technicians â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are also at greater risk. Treatment options depend on how severe or extensive the condition is. The most conservative treatment is taking ibuprofen

WASHINGTON PAVILION The Washington Pavilion is an excellent place to take your children for some fun and educational experiences. The first Friday of each month is free admission to the Kirby Science Discovery Center. Learn how to prepare some delicious meals as a family in one of Leonardo’s Cafe hands-on cooking classes. Choose from a list of classes, including the option for private classes too. There are daily live science shows, including explanations of magic tricks, hair-raising electricity explorations, crime scene investigations, chemical reaction demonstrations, the science of bubbles, germs, and more. MUSEUM OF VISUAL MATERIALS There is so much to do at the Museum of Visual Materials (MoVM). They offer a unique museum experience for all five of our senses. The MoVM is a hands on experience where you will learn by your sense of touch, smell, hearing, taste and of course sight. The MoVM gives you the chance to experiences things like no other museum with all of the materials and facilities for you to expand your horizons — for free. It’s so different; you might forget you’re in a museum. It is the perfect rainy day spot — or sunny day, for that matter. They have sewing machines for the community to use along with all of the fabrics, thread and buttons to create whatever you would like — again, for free. They have a commercial kitchen which is used for cooking demonstrations and hall rentals. There is also a sound proof listening room where people can enjoy thousands of records or 8-tracks. There are over 4,500 books for both adults and children on all types of subjects such as cooking, religion, science, gardening, fantasy, and the arts. They even have a special brew of coffee that people can enjoy — for free — while relaxing and using the free Wi-Fi. The Museum of Visual Materials is located at 5th and Main downtown.

wo out of ten women experience a postpartum reaction after having their baby. They feel upset, alone, afraid or unloving toward their baby and guilt for having these feelings. If you feel like you might be experiencing postpartum depression, you are not alone. Postpartum depression is a form of clinical depression which can affect women after childbirth.

Helpful home treatment measures:

There are three groups of postpartum reactions:

• Eat a balanced diet. If you have little appetite, eat small snacks throughout the day. Nutritional supplement shakes are also useful for keeping up your energy.

1. Temporary crying over little things 2. Depression 3. Psychosis

• Schedule outings and visits with friends and family. Isolation feeds depression, especially when combined with the stress of caring for a newborn and lack of sleep. • Get as much sunlight as possible. Keep your shades and curtains open, and get outside as much as you can.

• Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Postpartum depression is characterized by anxiety, irritability and fatigue. Women will always say “I don’t feel like myself ” and “Something is not right.” Like sadness, postpartum depression can start in the first few days after childbirth and peak at six to eight weeks. The most important thing women who believe they are experiencing postpartum depression can do is call their healthcare provider and be evaluated by a professional. The most effective treatments include medication and counseling which will create a better quality of life and decrease a woman’s likelihood of relapsing. With treatment, symptoms improve more quickly. Antidepressant medication and counseling have proven to be equally effective, and most medications are proven to be safe to use while pregnant, during breastfeeding and postpartum.

• Get regular daily exercise, such as outdoor stroller walks. Exercise helps improve mood. • Get as much rest and sleep as possible. Fatigue can increase depression. • Play stimulating music throughout your day and soothing music at night. • Join a support group of moms with new babies. An infant massage class is another great way of getting out and spending time with others whose daily lives are like yours, while learning new ways to bond with your baby. Talk to your health professional about your postpartum depression symptoms and what type of treatment is best for you.

he words “June” and “wedding” just seem to go together. In fact, the month of June gets its name from Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. While wedding traditions have evolved over the centuries, one particular symbol lives on today stronger than ever – the wedding dress. As the owner of Interlude Bridal Shoppe, Tammy Andrews knows the importance of “The Dress.” Recently we caught up with Tammy to get her thoughts on weddings, dresses, and how the big decision gets made. How did you get started in the business? My mother and grandmother were both seamstresses, so it was something I grew up with. When I was in high school, I wanted a particular prom dress that cost a lot of money. My mom said ‘no way’ so that just made me more determined. I went to the store, studied it, bought the material with my own money, and made it myself. Well, pretty soon word got around and I found myself making dresses for a lot of friends and family. The money helped me get through college, and even as I worked in the business world, the thought always stayed with me and eventually led me back to the bridal industry.

What aspect of your job/business do you enjoy the most? Working with the brides. It’s so easy to get caught up in the business side, but it’s always great to step away from the desk and help the brides and see the smiles on their faces.

at the more youthful, newer styles, while Mom comes at it from a different perspective – usually leaning toward more conservative, traditional designs and styles. It’s important to respect that dynamic between mother and daughter, but usually the bride wins out. It’s her day, after all.

What factors are most important in matching a bride to her dress? It really is matching it to her personality. You can take into consideration a person’s shape, but it really comes down to how she perceives herself when she sees her reflection in that mirror.

Is it gratifying to be included in something as special as someone’s wedding? It is very gratifying because you get mom and dad, and sometimes the whole family involved in the process, and you feel very flattered to be a part of something that personal. Our store has been around since the ‘70s, so we see second and third generations of brides come through our door. That is a very good feeling.

Do you ever have the experience where the bride has her heart set on a dress that really doesn’t flatter her? We have consultants who really work with the brides, pulling different dresses and making suggestions. Most of the time the dress the bride has set in her mind at the start is not the one she ends up choosing. The opportunity to try different styles and designs helps them discover what makes them look best. So the dress they saw in a movie or a magazine that they loved, might not be the best one for them? Hollywood drives the glamour market, that’s for sure, but the dress Jennifer Lopez wears in a movie may not be right for you. Who is the more challenging customer, the bride, or the bride’s mother? You mean challenging in a good way, right? (laughs) I’d have to say both, because it can be a stressful time between mother and daughter because there is a difference of age and a difference in taste. The bride wants to look

Is there any style or trend that you were happy to see go away? I was happy to see the medieval style dresses with the big poofy sleeves and the five-foot wide hoops go away. I just don’t like that look. Explain it to those of us who don’t know better, what is the value of a bride’s wedding dress? It’s very simple, to look beautiful on her wedding day. A bride wants to be beautiful on her wedding day, for herself and her groom. So why is it still so cherished 10 years later? Because she will remember how beautiful she was on her wedding day and so will her husband. You’re married aren’t you? Well?? You make an excellent point.

iper our Golden Retriever just had her 1st birthday. Since she is so grown up, it is her opinion that vacations are for everyone in the house, including her. The difficult vacation question for many is, “what do we do with the pets?”. It is a different answer for each household and can even vary on the type of plans you have. Being prepared is the most important thing to keep in mind. If you take your friend everywhere, then you just adjust your plans to make it happen. Some hotels are “pet friendly” and welcome your pets with open arms. There are hotels that take pets, but will charge you extra every night. Some hotels are very unfriendly towards pets and will fine you for allowing your pet in the building for any amount of time. Bottom line is that we need to call ahead and confirm that Piper can be a guest. If you love to camp, rent a vacation house or stay with relatives, you still should make sure that it is OK to bring your

best friends along. We also need to make sure that it is safe to take them along. If you go to the lake country of Minnesota or Wisconsin, we need to make sure your dog is vaccinated for Lymes disease. You also need a strong medication to prevent fleas and ticks. Their incidence of lymes is much higher than the Sioux Falls area. Rattlesnakes are common in western and central portions of South Dakota. If you allow your dog to free roam or hunt in these areas during the summer, the risk of being bitten by a rattler is high. There is a vaccine for the venom of rattlesnakes now available. The weather is also important in determining what is right for each pet. Piper does not like the hot weather, so to take her tent camping in the badlands would not be enjoyable for her or us. to leave her with friends, or board her. We always need to be concerned about heat stroke, stress and the possible dangers of our destination. Piper is going to the boarding kennel for a few days in July, because it is too hot and too busy to keep her safe. I need to make sure a few important steps are taken to make her stay as easy as possible. The first thing I have to do is get the reservation ahead of time, especially when it is over a holiday.

Her vaccinations have to be current, including kennel cough. I also need to bring her own food and treats to make sure that her digestive system does not have to deal with new foods. I will also schedule a bath the day we pick her up. Getting away with our pets is usually a great time, just make sure that the details are taken care of before you leave. Have fun on vacation, and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to take their food and medications along.

D ALL CITY ELEMENTARY Jane Addams School, Sioux Falls

uring the summer of 1974, the Sioux Falls School District agreed to launch an innovative elementary program at Irving School. Nancy Plato was chosen “Lead Teacher” and was charged with implementing an alternative school philosophy in a public school setting. Janet Brady was hired as the intermediate teacher. Together as a team, the two women taught fifty-five children in Grades K-6 the first year. This alternative school embraced two basic principles: 1) parents agree to be actively involved in their child’s education by being

present one-half day each week as volunteer helpers, and 2) its curriculum exposes students to local, national, and international issues and events with each classroom treated as an extension of the community. Founded as an experiment, in time the alternative school moved from Irving to Emerson and was renamed All City Elementary (ACE). Students continued to attend from all areas of the city and not merely from the school’s neighborhood. Relocated to Garfield and then to Jane Addams, ACE celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2010.

Janet Brady Janet Brady was selected to teach the intermediate grades during Alternative School’s first year (19741975). Only two teachers were in charge of 55 pupils. Within 10 years, the student population had grown to 113 with another 25 children on a waiting list. From the scores of alternative schools that began across the nation in the 1970s, ACE is one of only a few to survive. The new historical marker commemorates All City Elementary’s success and its thirty-fifth anniversary!

Nancy Plato Nancy Plato, a teacher at Laura B. Anderson Elementary School, was interviewed during the summer of 1974 by Superintendent Dr. John Harris and a number of interested parents. She was designated Lead Teacher of the newly formed Alternative School.
