Story
Sculpture artist Chris Lattanzio inside his latest installation, Mood Elevator, an innovative work that acts as an art piece and a “portal” to manage moods of stress and relaxation.

The Mood Elevator brings participants up

and down

It’s time to reintroduce the phrase, ‘Art makes you feel.’

It’s usually parroted by expressive groans and eyes rolling skyward. Trust us, we know, but for this specific piece, it’s ironically the only way to describe the Mood Elevator .

It’s all done by its founder and creator, Chris Lattanzio. The premise for the Mood Elevator is simple: provide a brief respite from daily stressors for the community by way of elevating or relaxing their moods inside a colorful box installation that sits in the corner of Jesuit’s Historical Library.

Since 1999, Lattanzio’s career has sent him on quests of bending metals and manipulating light.

Previous works include Spirit of the Downhill Skier , selected by the official United States Olympic Committee for the 2006 Winter Olympics. In 2007, there was the Nobel Portraits for a Noble Building , featuring 51 Bay Area scientists who won the Nobel Prize. In 2008, he began to play with art. Last year, Lattanzio had just wrapped work on a pop-up, Level 7, an immersive art experience using light, sound and design to transport people on a space adventure stationed at Cypress Waters. It was his quarantine project, launching in 2022

and wrapping up in April 2023. In a conversation with his wife, he candidly talked about his latest work and what he would do differently while also doing something similar. She recommended that he share what he brings and what he did in the background to the foreground.

“Who would ever pay for that?” he asked her. “She said, ‘Well you would do it as a nonprofit?’ And then as she was leaving the room, she said ‘It could be called a mood elevator.’ Without her being aware, she came up with the title and everything and moved me forward.”

Lattanzio soon took the idea and ran with it, sketching out the first drafts of the Mood Elevator . The original size was the size of a regular elevator but Lattanzio knew he needed to widen it out to resemble more of a freight elevator.

Lattanzio went to Elizabeth Hunt Blanc, the museum’s director, to get approval. The idea was presented to the board of trustees. The president and principal of the school signed off on it, giving it a green light. Then, Lattanzio was dialing a Rolodex of previous clients, explaining the latest endeavor and scoring investments to further the project. He contacted Katie Garrison of the Dimmick

Garrison Foundation, The Mike and Mary Terry Family Foundation and realtor Mike Geisler. With the backing of friends and investors, Lattanzio created a nonprofit organization to fund the project, clinching a $100,000 investment.

“We pieced it together. I mean, we got that in there, I’m not kidding you, I think there was $11 in the bank,” Lattanzio says. “By the skin of our teeth.”

Measuring 80 inches across, the elevator is flanked by two-inch steel tubes. Under the hood, Mood Elevator uses a DMX decoder, a control board that sends light signals to orchestrate the experience.

Like an elevator, there are two buttons for “up” and “down,” creating a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ scenario between two mood-altering experiences, each trip lasting five minutes.

The “up” button is for those wanting to alleviate stress. It features vivid warm lights and uplifting music mixed by Lattanzio’s friend, Mark Menza.

The “down” button follows a similar path but elects a more calming experience with soothing sounds also mixed by Menza and cool hues of deep cerulean, soft turquoise, mint green and vibrant green.

Either path, the Mood Elevator is designed for students, faculty and the community to briefly escape outside pressures.

The Mood Elevator mimics an elevator to a tee to transport users to different emotions rather than floors. People can experience the artistic elevator by sitting between its three walls for a multi-sensory experience.

On March 20, it was time to move the Mood Elevator into the Jesuit Library, coinciding with International Happiness Day.

Since becoming the new art piece on the block, the reception has been nothing short of an exception — literally. Lattanzio recounts how there are nearly 1,100 that go to the school and over 70% have stood in line for the Mood Elevator.

“One kid told me he’d had a bad day the day before. He had a test in

the afternoon and he had a break in the morning and went through it,” Lattanzio says. “He stopped worrying about whatever. He wasn’t worried about the test. He was just present. That’s exactly what this is supposed to do.”

Faculty and the community have also become fans. Lattanzio also explains how one teacher will use the Mood Elevator twice a day. Another student will sit inside, but play his own music — opera.

“In my mind, I did not know how they were going to interact, they’re high school kids, but every time I go up there there’s someone in it,” Lattanzio says.

More importantly, this won’t be the last of the Mood Elevator Lattanzio is currently in the works on two more copies as people have been requesting them in their own institutions. Lattanzio believes it could be installed in retirement homes, hospitals and more schools.

“Those kids have access to a lot of things and I’d like to put an elevator where they don’t,” Lattanzio says.

“Our whole mission is to have hundreds of these out there and always provide a free experience.”

Jesuit began construction in the library during the latter half of May, and the Mood Elevator will temporarily reside at the Museum of Biblical Art near NorthPark Center until it’s finished.

While there’s no telling how long it will be there or if it will go on a couple of rounds of a grand “tour,” it’s safe to ask: Are you going up or down?

Anchor Sushi’s fresh venture
food
Story and Photography by KELSEY SHOEMAKER The anchor sushi headlines the restaurant with a riceless roll of hamachi and avocado topped with bluefin tuna, chives and ginger vinaigrette. Opposite: The assorted nigiri includes a taste of the menu with salmon, scallops, tuna and yellowtail among the platter.

Last year, Anchor Sushi said “ahoy” to the Preston Royal neighborhood.

When guests step in, they immediately feel like they boarded a luxury yacht, not a restaurant, with its direct nods to a nautical theme—without using any clichés.

No, servers won’t wear a captain’s hat, roll out an anchor or tell pirate jokes.

Anchor Sushi is Vandelay’s seventh concept, 18th restaurant and first foray into Asian fusion cuisine.

The name Vandelay Hospitality Group means something in Dallas, especially Preston Hollow. Throw a rock from its latest paradigm, and it’ll hit three other sibling restaurants: D.L. Mack’s, Drake’s Hollywood and, new to the block, Hudson House.

The 6,000-square-foot space takes over the former Cantina Laredo inside Preston Royal Shopping Center that was up for grabs in 2021.

The concept began when VHG owner and CEO Hunter Pond and chief culinary officer James Douglas saw a need for more authentic Japanese cuisines in the neighborhood. They traveled coast to coast, city to city, tasting different iterations of seafood and finding fresh inspiration.

“Dallas itself is highly competitive,” Douglas says. “We feel that a lot of our concepts have a following. We feel strongly that we’ve created trust, value, sophistication and a vibe. When you come to our restaurants, it’s a place to celebrate. It’s not that we were necessarily going into it with nervousness, it’s that we’re checking all the boxes whenever we’ve created a venue, making sure that we execute.”

They worked with Jesse Neargarder of Foxtrot Studio, responsible for VHG’s other restaurant designs. It was his job to capture the personality in a bottle with a sophisticated approach.

It needed to feel like guests were on a boat but in a refined way.

Anchor Sushi brings an East Coast yacht club feel with mood lighting, rich hues, whimsical and signed James Bond artwork and plaid patterns.

The restaurant sends guests on a trip the moment the door opens. The “lobby” is flanked by two dining rooms, each suited with linen-wrapped tables and booths. Dark wooden floorboards mirror the planks on a ship and the round oval windows are in tune with a maritime vessel. But if it’s a drink passengers crave, they’ll be met with a 37-foot cocktail bar.

“Whenever these restaurants are conceptualized, the very first thing that we do is create the build-out that becomes a personality,” Douglas says. “It starts to evolve into what we see it being as far as the architecture or the art package behind it, then that starts to bleed into the venue. We want the guests to receive the first moment of truth when they enter the restaurant, and say, ‘What is this?’”

It’s all to complement the sushi menu.

The menu needed to reflect the same class of sophistication. That’s when VHG found seasoned sushi chef, Kesao Otake.

“I always like to refer to what we’ve done more as a revolution than an evolution,” Douglas says. “We were able to get somebody with his expertise in his talent. Three years ago, would have absolutely been absurd for us to even talk about, but the fact that we’ve really increased the brand and brand recognition, we’re proud to be able to bring people with his skill set. So that’s what’s going to help this company evolve.”

Otake holds a high culinary background with experience in California, Moscow, China, France and Japan, including a time at Michelin-starred Nozawa Bar in Beverly Hills.

“I’ve never seen something like this,” Otake says. “I can say this sushi is totally different. Everything is a balanced taste. I needed to do something, not just to show my ability or my experience, but have something of my own.”

Diners can find their favorite classic sushi rolls on the menu, those are promised, but the real adventure is in the signature rolls. Among some favorites is a roll bearing the restaurant’s name —the Anchor Roll, one of the 14 signature rolls, hamachi wrapped with

avocado, topped with bluefin tuna, chives and a ginger vinaigrette. Another, the lupton, is a riceless roll with crab, avocado, hamachi and yuzu, topped with truffle and lemon zest.

Otake orders fresh seafood from Tokyo weekly to have a quality and fresh menu.

It’s also a known tactic to pair sushi with martinis. A VHG concept is equipped with a trusty martini menu, its World’s Coldest Martini menu. Some recommendations include the sweet lychee martini – vodka, Chambord, pineapple and fresh lime or the pear martini using Grey Goose le poire, elderflower and fresh lemon.

Beyond sushi, the menu extends to shiso tuna tacos, steamed pork dumplings, miso-marinated sea bass and unconventional elements like the Tokyo cheeseburger.

“The food that we have is really unique,” executive chef Samuel Pacheco says. “You can’t find anything like this anywhere else. We have anything from salads to dumplings made in house, a sushi program. I think especially being in a neighborhood like this, you can pick up kids from school and have a date night in the evening.”

Anchor Sushi Bar in Knox Henderson is the restaurant’s little sister that opened in August. While Anchor Sushi invites a mature crowd with button-ups, Anchor Bar attracts a younger demographic, especially on weekend nights.

No matter how much VHG innovated, one thing will stay the same: they’re locked into the Preston Hollow and Park Cities area for the long haul.

“This is our home for sure,” Douglas says. “This is where we want to stay. We’re very comfortable with so many people, businesses and families here now.”

Jill Stone Community Garden volunteers harvest fresh organic produce for the Vickery Meadows Food Pantry

Community garden volunteers meet every Wednesday morning to start harvest.

Story by KELSEY SHOEMAKER Photography by LAUREN ALLEN

At 8 a.m. every Wednesday at Temple Emanu-El’s Jill Stone Community Garden, Master Gardeners Wendy Leanse and Lori Droppo don clothes they don’t mind throwing some dirt on.

At 10:30 a.m., Droppo will load the week’s yield into the back of her “vegetable car” and drive to Vickery Meadows’ Food Pantry, an ethnically diverse, low-income neighborhood lacking affordable access to fresh produce. It’s been a routine since 2012 when the garden started with Leanse and Droppo at the helm. Last year alone, they delivered 7,200 pounds of organic produce.

“There’s a Hebrew expression, ‘tikkun olam,’ which basically means to repair the world,” Leanse says. “It’s the driving premise behind everything we do.”

In 2011, the garden was merely a little field outside of the Temple Emanu-El. The idea for a community garden came from the Temple to address the food desert in the area. Leanse, freshly minted as a Master Gardener, saw the opportunity and took the project by the reins.

Leanse became head of the project and was reaching out to others for help including Droppo, her high school friend who is also an avid gardener. Droppo helped to cultivate the vision.

“We’re a great team together,” Droppo says. “And we really drive this garden to grow as much as we possibly can. We’re always trying something new.”

The garden sits in the northern corner on the land of Temple Emanu-El on Hillcrest Road. The garden began with a modest 19 beds of fresh greens and a handful of volunteers. In 2019, thanks to a generous donation, they were able to add 9,000 square feet of growing space, more raised beds, storage spaces and a greenhouse.

In 2014, Dallas County Master Gardeners approved the Jill Stone Community Garden as an official project for volunteers needing hours.

Through Vickery Meadows, they realized the garden’s impact could extend beyond its bounty, but also serve as a catalyst to grow more neighborhood connections by growing produce that others could recognize.

A Cambodian gardener near White Rock Lake taught them how to grow more diverse produce. Not only were they growing onions, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, but soon they were adding Chinese long beans, bitter and snake melons, mizuna, sweet potato leaves, bok choy and tatsoi to their repertoire.

“The clientele started changing with the pandemic and then it was just hungry people,” Leanse says.

Even in the worst rain, freezing temperatures and scorching summers, they were out there in the garden.

“I remember one morning, it was pouring,” Droppo says. “I’ve never seen it rain so hard in my life and I’m picking Black Eyed Peas and I look over and Deidre, who’s very sophisticated and beautiful, is right next to me. We just look at each other and just burst up laughing because we’re so wet.”

Even during the pandemic, they worked.

“We were considered essential workers during all of the pandemic,” Leanse says. “We worked the whole pandemic because people were still hungry and still needed food.”

The early days began with volunteers from the Temple and Dallas County Master Gardener volunteers. Now, its helping hands have grown to more volunteers and neighbors. The Temple now has a farm-to-table program to teach preschoolers about gardening with hands-on experience.

Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are allowed along with Master Gardener volunteers who work for their hours. Droppo alone put in over 500 hours last year.

“People get hooked. [One volunteer] came to volunteer and now she comes all the time,” Droppo says. “She definitely drank the Kool-Aid.”

About 15 people will come out on Wednesdays, but on Sundays about 20 volunteers will help with planting, seeding, fertilizing and any other mandatory things.

“These are just the nicest people you will ever meet,” volunteer Sarah Kaplan says. “We all want the same thing. There’s no little fiefdom.”

TURNING THE PAGES

An author’s quirky path to publishing children’s stories

We’ve all had that one peculiar dream—we wake up, shake our heads and hope it gets lost in the morning haze of the daily grind.

Well, for neighbor Kelly Park, instead of the dream getting buried behind mundane morning tasks, it continued to stay with her as she drove to work. When she sat down at her desk job, she began to sketch the idea out across seven sticky notes.

Her idea? A mustache that falls off a man’s face and embarks on its own escapade.

“I haven’t had a fun cool idea in a while,” Park says. “So I wanted to take the bull by the horns. I didn’t know what I was doing, but it was so far-fetched that I thought maybe it’s cute and maybe people will like it.”

She decided to follow through. The first book, Mustache Dash , was a novice trial as she learned about the irks that come with self-publishing — budget constraints, marketing conundrums and the hunt for an illustrator. Eventually, she chose a close friend to help with the illustrations. Gradually, she saw the crazy vision come to life.

For a while, she thought that was it; the book would sit alone on her shelf as a tale from that one time when she wrote a book.

But that’s not exactly how this story goes.

While Park was looking at barber shops that could put Mustache Dash somewhere, it was slowly being read by the facial hair community of big burly men with bigger hearts.

Venturing to a hair convention in Chicago in November 2019, Park found herself embraced by a sea of beards and mustaches, selling her book at a table between razors and shaving cream.

“That changed a lot because I met people there they had never had a vendor sell books,” Park says. “I met so many kind people and I really think they were like, ‘Well she’s not selling beard oil. This is something different.’ And as an outsider, I’ve never met a nicer community of people. I came back with probably 40 new Facebook friends. They just took me in.”

Soon, Park was traveling to beard and mustache conventions, appearing on podcasts and selling the book.

Inspired by the warm reception, Park wrote her sophomore book, When a Beard Gets Weird , capturing the many person -

alities and eccentricities of facial hair aficionados. This time, she got in touch with local illustrator, William “Bubba” Flint who has previous works in The Dallas Morning News , Katy Trail Weekly and White Rock Lake Weekly.

“You do a mustache book and all the weirdos want a book about beards so that opened up a whole other can of worms,” Park laughs. “It was really nice of Bubba to take on my offthe-wall ideas.”

Her other book, Tonya Lasagna is a dedication to those young picky eaters and Rats In Hats takes place in a hobby-filled garage. Each book continues to add personal anecdotes and familial homages.

In Rats In Hats, the rodents have the time of their lives as they make a ruckus in boxes of Christmas decorations, an idea that came to her when she was storing away boxes after the hectic season and remembered her own childhood home had many boxes full of crafts.

“A lot of the dedications went to [my dad] in some form or fashion,” Park says. “He’s been an inspiration for Mustache Dash and in Rats In Hats, the man in the garage? That’s him 100%.”

Park didn’t have any previous creative ambitions. Her dad, the source of her inspiration from the first to the fourth book, bought a craft store in her small town of Winnsboro, two hours east of Dallas. There, she and her sister lived out their creative fantasies. The crafts made their way to Park’s house.

“There was not much to do at all,” Park says. “There was a craft shop within bicycle riding distance and I think my dad saw that my sister and I were able to get there pretty close.”

Although Park doesn’t have children of her own, she hears from the children in her family, other readers and the bearded community, about how her stories are appreciated. Her next two ideas are inspired by Texas and animals.

“It’s good for parents to read to your kids,” Park says. “That’s my main mission. I don’t care if people start with the Bible — get something in their hands that’s not a tablet and communicate the importance of reading with your kids. Do not let them download their childhood.”

REBUILDING A HOME

Station 41 returns home after five years

Dallas Fire Station 41, known as Preston Royal Fire Department to those in the neighborhood, opened its bay doors on Jan. 16, 1958.

For over 60 years, it was an emblem to the community, but for the firefighters who station there, it’s their home.

But who comes to help when they’re the ones in need?

On Oct. 20, 2019, a tornado swept through the area, touching down over the station. It destroyed portions of the building, completely ripping off the roof.

“[Station 41] were supposed to go out and help,” Lieutenant John Marshall says. “They weren’t anticipating being the ones that needed help. They were in the truck when the tornado lifted it up. They were on the radio as they were getting hit by the tornado. I can only imagine you just got hit and the expectation is you continue to serve.”

A few days later, driver David Leos sifted through the debris to collect the station’s letters. They now hang inside the newly remodeled Fire Station 41 as a special tribute to Leos, who was DFR’s only line-of-duty COVID-19 death.

“The letters in the hallway are so that if you’re passing through every day, you can kind of remember that this is a new station, but we still remember the old fire station,” says Peter Hernandez project manager at PGAL, the design firm responsible for the makeover.

Station 41 temporarily took residence at 5807 Royal Lane, a few miles down

the road. In most ways, the temporary spot was more like a camp with tents and trailers. For a couple of years, they waited out weather and construction delays.

Since a firefighter spends most of their time at the station becoming a second home, or to some, a first home. It was something that Hernandez and PGAL principal Tim Konganda kept in mind when redesigning the new building.

PGAL is an international design firm with a portfolio of municipal projects, fire stations, libraries, recreation centers, senior centers, schools, airports and animal shelters.

One of the first steps in the process was finding a Dallas fire station with a similar floor plan. There, they took photos, made a 3D model and did a laser scan of the building.

“We wanted to honor the old architectural style, but also improve the style and the functionality,” Hernandez says. “Fitting into the neighborhood was an important factor. It’s a very tight site so we had to make this building fit down to that size in a functional way.”

Some of those styles include drawing inspiration from the neighborhood and casting the new fire station with a midcentury modern makeover. Above the kitchen, high wooden beams stretch across the ceiling and corridor. Large windows mirror the feel of the bay, welcoming bright natural light into the common areas.

“It’s like their second home,” Hernandez says. “We were trying to make it functional and a good area for

them to be able to rest and be able to be present and decompress from all the stress after action. I think this is a fire station to give them all of that.”

The team realized that they would be met with some architectural challenges throughout the design process. In some ways, the tornado was a sign to rebuild as new code compliances had been introduced since it was first constructed in the ‘50s. There needed to be a tornado or storm safe room, a designated inner decontamination area near the locker room. Another challenge was following protocol while stretching out the original 6,000 square feet.

Throughout the process, PGAL was in close collaboration with the fire department. Among the shared ideas was the need to move the fitness room from the apparatus bay to a more dedicated room due to health concerns.

Next to the letters in the hallway, there’s a plaque St. Mark’s gave to the station to commend all the firefighters stationed at 41. In the locker room, a mural handpainted by firefighter Lieutenant Nelson Rossy depicts a headless horseman from the infamous tale, Sleepy Hollow a nod to the neighborhood. Behind the horseman, a tornado symbolizes the reasoning behind the new design.

“For the guys, they were so excited to be there as well. Having the fire station be reborn was definitely exciting for the firm as well,” Hernandez says.

Finally, on Feb. 15, the new facility opened its bay doors to the community with a grand reopening event. On opening day, the community was there to celebrate with the station. Councilmember Gay Donnell Willis, the choir from St. Mark’s, widows of former firefighters, retired firefighters and Dirk Nowitzki, a Preston Hollow neighbor, also matched with 41.

“I think this fire station is truly a community station where everyone’s happy to give in to and to tend to their firemen,” Hernandez says.

A mural inside the station’s exercise room features a mural designed by the late David Leos and handpainted by Lieutenant Nelson Rossy.

A FLIGHT ABOVE

Bill Cole has spent a vast amount of time in the clouds; it was his domain for many years.

From his days as an Air Force veteran to his illustrious career as a Southwest Airlines pilot, Cole is a volunteer at the Frontiers of Flight museum where he shares his aviation experience and passion with others.

As a child, Cole collected model planes before he was in the cockpits of the real deal. His father’s military service took them to various locations, including France. Returning from a base there, he spent two years at Mineral Wells High School before joining the Air Force Academy.

“I didn’t make it the first try,” Cole says. “But along with a bunch of other folks around the country, I was offered the opportunity to enlist into the Air Force to go to basic training and then the Naval Academy prep school.”

During his second year at West Point, he attended the Air Force Academy, graduating in 1965 alongside his friend Lance P. Sijan.

Cole’s initial assignment was with the C130, serving deployments to Turkey and Vietnam. In November 1967, Sijan’s plane was shot down over North Vietnam. Despite evading capture for 45 days while badly injured, Sijan was eventually taken prisoner and died in captivity. After the war, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

“That was a sad part of my experience in Vietnam,” Cole says. “I was very fortunate to come back to the States.”

Later stationed in Texas, Cole learned of opportunities with Southwest Airlines in San Antonio, allowing him to fulfill his 20 years of flying credits required by the Air Force.

“I really enjoyed it, it was terrific,” Cole says about his experience at Southwest. “A lot of good guys to work with and then we had our first female captain when I was still there.”

Following retirement in 2002, Cole became involved with the Frontiers of Flight Museum, volunteering his time. Along with appreciating the sections of the aviation museum, Cole saw they

had a Vietnam POWS (Prisoners of War) wall, but didn’t have the names of some of them.

“I talked to them about [Lance] and they put him up as an example with a picture of him and a brief story of his situation,” Cole says. “I was happy to see that. People were seeing a real person who had been given this life over there.”

Though no longer flying, Cole remains active at the museum, sharing his passion for aviation and staying in tune with industry innovations – although he does hope that Boeing improves, he teases.

In his free time, Cole continues his childhood hobby of collecting model airplanes, now displayed on the shelves where he stays at The Preston of the Park Cities overlooking Dallas Love Field. Each day from his window, he gets to watch planes take off and land while also observing the local birdlife.

“It’s good to be out there and look and just enjoy the scenery,” Cole says. “I guess I’ve gotten used to that over the years of being skyborne.”
