The California Energy Commission (Bastian et. al.) acknowledges that renewable energy development in the Mojave could destroy over 17,000 Native American cultural sites.

“We  do  not  oppose  alterna.ve  renewable  energy  development  so   long  as  those  projects  are  compliant  with  federal  law,  and  policy   and  so  long  as  those  projects  are  not  at  the  expense  of  our  cultural   iden.ty.”     -‐Anthony  Pico,  Viejas  Chairman

“What’s  really  struck  me  is  the  level  at  which   we’ve  only  begun  scratching  the  surface  of   documen.ng  the  flora.  You  can  assume  that   5  –  10%  of  the  species  out  there  remain  un-‐ described  to  date.”

“The  importance  of  these  systems  is  to  provide  corridors  for  species  to  move  as   climate  changes,  whether  it’s  human  caused  change  or  the  natural  course  of   varia.on  in  climate  change,  you’ve  really  done  in  the  en.re  ecosystem  at  that   scale.”

“The  fast-‐track  s.mulus  money  is  being  given  to  them  to  the   companies  by  Obama  because  they’re  trying  to  say  we’re  helping   the  environment.  You  think  they’re  helping  the  environment  by   destroying  our  sacred  sites?  ”         –Alfredo  Figueroa

“They  need  to  start  thinking  about  the   total  landscape  that  we  see.”     -‐Charles  Wood,  Former  Chairman
