HAVE you ever heard, ‘Life is a journey, but don’t worry, you’ll find a parking spot in the end’?

Hopefully, in Shepparton, finding a park is not quite so time consuming, but sometimes, finding a park in your very own street can be.

With most neighbours full of goodwill and courtesy, some nearby residents can make parking near your own home something of a challenge.

While parking outside your own abode is reasonable, taking territorial ownership of the nature strip and other curb side spaces (with subsequent vehicles) is not, and can cause unnecessary discord amongst otherwise friendly neighbours.

For those who also like to leave curt notes under windscreen wipers in the belief that ‘their park’ has been taken, the Vic Roads’ Road Safety Rules of 2017 sets

out in simple terms what our collective, residential parking rights are:

‘You are allowed to park or leave your vehicle anywhere in a street where parking is permitted including in front of other homes or businesses.’

For nature strip devotees, the Road Safety Rules also state, parking is not permitted ‘...on a footpath, nature strip or reservation (unless the vehicle is a motorcycle or bicycle).’

With most neighbours in Shepparton offering good-natured amicability, allowing for mutual agreements about parking to take place, sometimes a little re-stating of the rules can be of use.

To find out more about rules relating to road safety head to vicroads. vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/ road-rules/a-to-z-of-roadrules/parking

LOOKING to extend her career prospects, aircraft maintenance engineer, Rutu Shukla and her husband, Bhagyesh left India in 2018 to live in Melbourne, where Rutu enrolled in a Master of Science in Aviation at RMIT.

By the end of 2019, however, Covid had effectively brought the aviation industry to a standstill, leaving Rutu in limbo with an incomplete degree.

Nevertheless, obtaining her Master’s in 2020, Rutu and her husband moved to Mooroopna where she gave birth to her son, Aarush.

Isolated from friends and family back in India, Rutu was blown away by the exceptional care she received from midwives at GV Health during Aarush’s birth, inspiring her to envisage a new career path.

Already from a family with a strong medical background, and only too aware of increasing shortages in nursing, Rutu’s career impasse had come to an end.

Signing up at GOTAFE in Shepparton to study as an enrolled nurse, Rutu’s advancement in the field was assisted by joining The Flamingo Project, a not-forprofit, local organisation that supports women through specialised mentorship to obtain a foothold in a new industry.

Assisting Rutu to transition between two very different professions, Sonia Strachan, a specialist prostate cancer nurse at GV Health, has been an invaluable mentor, as Rutu said,

“It’s been challenging for me to so completely change direction. I’ve gone from leading a team in a corporate environment but now I am back at first base.

“At first, I was very nervous, and I

thought I was over the age of studying, but Sonia has been marvellous in talking me through my concerns.

“She told me to be open to learning, listen to what senior nurses are telling me from experience and always to reflect upon my practise," Rutu said.

Space to grow, compete and build community

SPORTING and community groups in the south end of Shepparton are rejoicing after the opening of the redeveloped facilities at Vibert Reserve on Friday, February 3.

The $4M project was supported by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Programme and funding from Council.

The revamped reserve and pavilion will be home to the South Shepparton Community Centre, Karramomus Cricket Club, Shepparton Rugby Union Club and the Shepparton Soccer Club.

With an extended function area in the pavilion including a kitchen, bar and food servery, the clubs and community centre are delighted to have more space as well as facilities capable of attracting more sport to the region while expanding their organisations.

Having far outgrown their small commission house, manager of South Shepparton Community Centre Dawn Taylor said, “We will now have the capacity to help so many more people in the

community, the pavilion is huge, far larger than our old house and portables.”

Mellisa Silaga, club facilitator of the Shepparton Ruby Union Club said, “Our new home will enable us to advocate for bigger and better events in Shepparton.

“With almost all the competition taking place in the metropolitan area, our junior ruby teams had to travel for all but one of their games last year, now we will be able to host more teams here and build the sport in the region.

“For a long time, we’ve been running our club effectively from under a marquee, but now we have the space for meetings and events. It is our clubroom to decorate,” Mellisa said.

President of the Karramomus Cricket Club, Nathan Delahey said returning to Vibert after one and half seasons would allow the club to host up to three games at once, “...that’s accommodating up to 60 blokes at one time comfortably, it’s a very user-friendly space for us.”

Critical staff shortages in health and aged care need urgent funding solutions

HEALTH and aged care operators and their employees are feeling the weight of on-going staff shortages across the sector.

Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell MP, said short term assistance is needed to encourage staff, especially registered nurses, to take up jobs in the regions.

“Whether there is some sort of relocation incentive or wage subsidy, we have to do something to ease the pressure on operators and current staff,” Mr Birrell said.

“We also need a longer-term plan to grow our own workforce by training people locally.”

Promising $19M of a $26M dollar project to establish the Goulburn Valley Clinical Health School, The Nationals in conjunction with GV Health and LA Trobe University had a plan to address the critical staff shortages.

The proposed clinic was to be a state-ofthe-art facility to train nurses, midwives and allied health workers in Shepparton and would have prepared students for their transition into clinical practice.

The clinic would have also addressed the medium and long-term workforce needs of

the region.

With the coalition succumbing to a Labor win in the last election, however, the Albanese Government has yet to find alternative funding for the Clinical Health School, Mr Birrell said, but added,

“GV Health and La Trobe University are still committed to the Clinical Health School and together we continue to lobby the Albanese Government to fund it as a medium to long term solution to the workforce challenges in the region.”

Bigger and better for Beyond Blue

OVER 100 car and bike owners will gather in Tatura next month to celebrate Hussln Auto Detailing’s 13th birthday and to raise money for mental health services in what is set to be the annual event’s biggest.

Hussln Auto Detailing owner Cam Scorey holds the event annually on the anniversary of opening his business. He decided to use the day raise much-needed funds for Beyond Blue.

“Everyone knows someone who has

struggled with their mental health and depression, whether that’s you, someone you work with, a friend or a friend of a friend,” said Cam.

“There have been a lot of suicides in the local area and attempted suicides, which made me think of ways to bring people together to help.”

$1,800 was raised in 2022. This year’s target has already been beaten thanks to sponsors who have contributed over $2,000.

Cam hopes to raise $5,000 with a raffle on

the day, with $3,500 worth of prizes ready to be raffled so far. There’s something for all ages and interests to be won, including vouchers for fuel, window tinting, Mitre 10, bakeries, pubs, butcher shops, rare spares and more. All sponsors and raffle contributors have been listed on our website.

The event will see 200m of Hogan Street from Ross Street to Fraser Street closed to accommodate up to 120 cars on Saturday, March 18, 9am to 12pm.

Tatura Lions Club will be cooking up bacon and egg rolls and Fast Brew coffee will donate $1 from every sale. Custom painted skateboard trophies are being made by Lindsay Customs & Restorations, Tatura Panels, Paint by Gashy, Certified Printing. Raffle tickets cost $5 or three for $10. Any businesses that wish to jump on board with a raffle prize should contact Cam on 0437 897 938.

Higher cost of living hitting hard

the public to share its thoughts and opinions about how the rapidly rising cost of living has impacted them.

For marketing manager, Carley, inflation has hit hard, as she said, “Our plans to start a family have taken a back seat.

PREVENTING THE GEAT AUSTRALIAN DREAM... Increasing inflation and interest rates are having a significant impact on young people working to enter the property market. With many young people simply unable to purchase their first home, others are even finding it difficult to leave their parent’s house. Picture: Supplied

With inflation at 7.8 percent and with it widely anticipated for interest rates to reach around 4.1 percent by August, the financial strain on families and mortgage holders is likely only to tighten.

With tough choices being made at the supermarket and with diminishing flexibility in household budgets, The Adviser has asked

“Things that would usually be attainable such as a suitable place to set up a home seem further away than what I could have predicted.

“How is it that someone can work five days a week, yet struggle to purchase a place to live?” Carley said.

For many young people, moving back in with parents has been the only option as the cost-of-

living increases, while the dream of entering the property market has been put off for others, as Hayley said, “I must rely on my parent’s house as a back-up. I am currently living with my partner in a rental because buying a house now, is too hard.”

Echoing Hayley’s financial strain, Frankie, who works in community services said, “I am having to reconsider my budgeting to buy a property. Increased rates are putting my partner and I far behind in entering the property market.”

Assisting your child to meet the biggest challenge

IMPRESSED with the way her own Foundation class have already settled in at Gutherie Street Primary School, Carlyn Giles said, “Establishing good routines at home is key for building children’s stamina at school, with strong sleep routines and a goodnight’s rest essential.

“It is also wise to limit after school activities during the first term as little bodies and minds

adjust to busy school life, and it's important that students also rest on their midweek dayoff,” Carlyn said.

With plenty of planned down time, brain breaks and short sharp lessons to ease students into formal learning, Carlyn said it was important that families took the time to talk to their children about their school day in a positive way, sharing their stories as well as

Immersive event for year 12’s

GREATER Shepparton Secondary College have welcomed their 2023 year 12 cohort to the new school year with an Immersion Days Event.

Held at the McIntosh Centre earlier this week, Year 12 students participated in a number of team-building activities, met with representatives from local businesses and further education providers, heard presentations on various topics and connected with their peers outside of a classroom setting over an immersive two days.

GOTAFE, LaTrobe Uni, Headspace and the Youth Foyer all hosted sessions and provided info on careers and wellbeing support available to students.

On Monday evening, parents to the College were invited to attend a presentation regarding VCE and VCEVM and how families can work together with the school to support their children.

challenges.

Establishing a fun home reading routine is also key to success, as Carlyn said, “Try and choose a time that best suits your child to read and always be present.

“Talk about the books and look at the pictures together. Make it enjoyable and just by being there, makes a huge difference.”

For challenging morning drop-offs, Carlyn

recommended talking with your child about what he can expect during the day, highlighting good things such as friends to play with, specialists and fun activities.

Planning something special after school while reassuring your child that you’ll always be there to pick him up can also make saying goodbye easier, Carlyn said.

VOGUE,

A

Greater Shepparton Secondary College have welcomed their 2023 year 12 cohort to the new school year with an Immersion Days Event. Student Grace poses as Naomi puts the finishing touches on their house team’s winning ensemble, created during a team-building activity.

Year 12 student Fabian, who has aspirations to study Medicine after VCE, explained how the Immersion Day Sessions were beneficial to him.

“I do have a clear study path in mind, I would like to pursue a career in surgical medicine. Today has been insightful and has provided a lot of information about what University options are available,” said Fabian.

A highlight of Monday’s activities was the action-packed newspaper fashion parade, which required students to flex their creative muscles and create a catwalk-worthy outfit together in teams. It was close, but Warrego House claimed victory after cladding Grace Kirunga with a pleated detail ensemble.

The power of giving

BACK in June last year I wrote about some concerns I had about the potential decline of volunteerism. I confess it may have been a bit premature. Yes, it was priceless and indeed inspiring to read of Margaret McNeil’s 70 years of volunteerism (Adviser, 25th Jan ed.) She is to be applauded and is an appropriate figurehead for all the wonderful volunteers that faithfully serve their community, right throughout Greater Shepparton.

I was thrilled to witness first hand during last year’s floods the explosion of

volunteers that emerged from all corners of community, urgently offering their help without any thought of reward. We were inundated (ironically)! Thanks to all who did something to help those less fortunate during this extremely challenging time.

Pleasingly, our younger generations certainly share a passion for social justice, and I look forward to our local youth and young adults increasingly “putting their hand up” for causes they are passionate about.

Jesus said, “It’s more blessed to give than receive,” and also, “God loves a cheerful giver.” Volunteering out of the goodness

of your heart certainly is something that brings joy not only to those we help, but also to God himself.

Jesus also issues a much-needed warning to those of us that are in it for the wrong reasons: “Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.” Let’s heed this warning and do right by others with pure intentions.

God bless, Jeremy Rensford.

Thank you, Professor Richard Speed

PROFESSOR Richard Speed left La Trobe University at the end of December 2022, having made a significant contribution to education in Shepparton through his role as Pro Vice Chancellor (Regional).

A highly regarded senior academic and extensively published researcher in Marketing at Melbourne and then La Trobe University, Richard took up the role of Pro Vice Chancellor (Regional) in 2013. In his 10 years as PVC (Regional), Richard led the development, refinement and implementation of the University’s regional strategy – a key aspect of La Trobe’s mission.

As he recently noted, “Regional education was not my issue before I joined La Trobe, but it certainly is now. It is shameful that higher education attainment halves between inner Melbourne and Tullamarine airport and keeps falling as you drive away from Melbourne. It denies individuals opportunities and denies communities the skills they need. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work on an issue so important, and I am immensely

grateful to my colleagues across the University, and to our collaborators in TAFEs, schools and community across the state.”

Richard’s expertise and leadership has been instrumental in providing educational opportunities and skills training to Shepparton students and researchers, and in working with our community to understand and respond to workforce needs and other major challenges.

He established and led strong partnerships with our schools, GOTAFE, local government, employers and small businesses, government bodies and community leaders in Shepparton, and is held in very high esteem by these partners.

La Trobe Shepparton Regional Advisory Board chair Lisa McKenzie paid tribute to Richard’s commitment to Shepparton, his advocacy for our regional campus, and the many strong and positive relationships he has built in our community.

“Richard was able to forge and grow many partnerships within the region improving pathways, opportunities and access for

students, many of whom were the first in their family to attend university,” Mrs McKenzie said.

Richard’s tireless support for the Shepparton campus building project (due for completion on 2024) is but one example of his commitment).

Richard remains connected with La Trobe as an honorary Professor in the Rural Health School and remains deeply interested in Shepparton happenings and rural educational outcomes.

Technology developed in Shepparton on the world stage

A LOCAL irrigation firm is again making waves across the globe as India’s Honorable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated one of the world’s largest canal irrigation modernisation projects, implemented by Shepparton’s Rubicon Water.

Millions around the nation watched as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, introduced the NLBC Automation project last month.

“For the first time, farmers across the entire 400,000ha area are receiving irrigation supplies through the automated canal system, with equitable distribution and better water management," explained Mr Bommai.

“Modernisation of the system has already increased network efficiency by 20 percent and further projects will be taken up.”

The improved water service to farmers will support the possibility of growing multiple crops per year and increase yields.

Prime Minister Modi emphasised how water security is integral to the securing the nation’s agricultural future.

"Like national security, border security,

coastal security, and internal security, India needs to end the challenges of water security for the development of India in the 21st century."

Back in Australia, the Rubicon Water team was also celebrating the occasion. The advanced automation technology was developed in Australia by Rubicon Water and research partner, the University of Melbourne.

“This is an incredible milestone for Rubicon Water. For a company to develop its technology here in Australia and deploy it into one of the world’s largest single irrigation automation projects in India and opened by Prime Minister Modi brings great pride,” said Rubicon Water CEO, Bruce Rodgerson.

Rubicon’s technology is currently responsible for automating the delivery of water to approximately 6,000kms of canals in Australia’s Murray-Darling Basin and globally the company has installed more than 35,000 automated gates that have been installed in 17 countries. The majority of this technology has been manufactured at Rubicon’s primary facility in Shepparton, Victoria.

“Councillors were briefed last week and to see it officially unveiled today is really exciting for our region, not only incorporating Greater Shepparton, but expanding beyond that to include the Goulburn Valley,” said mayor, Cr Shane Sali.

“We got past the worst of the Covid pandemic and then we were hit with arguably the biggest flood we’ve seen in history and our visitor economy industry were impacted more than anyone. This is about how we bounce back. It’s an exciting launch and I think we’re really excited for a big ‘23.”

The all-encapsulating rebranding, Shepparton and Goulburn Valley, connects the region’s unique and evolving cultures, traditions and

contemporary innovations, history and growth and invites the world to Come See for Yourself our bold, independent, and bountiful place.

Shepp & GV evolves the current Visit Shepparton channels and Many Great Things brand to promote the region through storytelling, showcasing the most distinctive and authentic experiences, inviting visitors to come see, feast, discover, stay and celebrate with us.

Major events are integral to attracting visitors and last year Greater Shepparton saw some of its largest ever events bring the community together and boost the economy.

At the industry event, which was the largest in its history, Council released the annual Major Events Calendar, outlining over 15 new major

events in 2023 to complement an already highquality line up.

Highlights include the return of Illuminate festival, new events like Melbourne to MOVE, and a Shepp & GV shuttle bus pilot program to connect locals to regional highlights.

Pre-pandemic saw 1.3M visitors travel to the region and in 2022, a further 1M visitors generated over $349M for the region’s economy. With the rebranding and a plethora of new and returning events, Council and the business community look to further strengthen Greater Shepparton’s reputation as a leading regional destination that is open for business.

SAM at Sunset is a golden opportunity for the whole family

IN continuation of its popular and much enjoyed debut, SAM at Sunset will return to the Shepparton Art Museum in a new and expanded format on Thursday, February 23.

Welcoming both children and families alike, the Sunset experience will offer extended-hours to galleries, the museum shop, curatorial and artist-led talks, creative workshops and ticketed access to level 4 bar and terrace, which will feature live music performances and refreshments.

For February, SAM at Sunset will double as a celebration of the current temporary exhibition 4th National Indigenous Triennial: Ceremony, a touring show from the National Gallery of Australia, ahead of its closure at the end of the month.

Featured artist, Penny Evans (K/ Gamilaroi) will lead special creative workshops and floor talks in galleries

during the evening and will be joined by SAM curators as well as National Gallery special projects curator, Kelli Cole (Warumungu/Luritja peoples).

The evening will also see the unveiling of the newly hung portraits in the current Children’s Gallery exhibition, All Together.

Portraits taken of local, GV families and groups in January by artists Meredith Turnbull and Ross Coulter will replace the current works on show to reflect the community engagement of the exhibition.

SAM CEO, Melinda Martin said, “SAM at Sunset will become a monthly program that creates a space for our community to come together and explore the museum outside of normal museum hours.

“It’s perfect as a solo activity, a place to catch up with friends for after-work drinks, or as an after-school treat for families to practice creatively together,” Melinda said.
