Pastoral Letter “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world, and they that dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1 AV Version) The Seasons are all special in their own right, but as we move from summer into autumn, the main event of the farming and growing year is Harvest. One farmer said to me, “All our work, effort and toil is focused to ensure a good harvest.” This has been the case since farming began, thousands of years ago and is the same today across the world. Those who produce our food are often the forgotten factor in our rush around the supermarket to load our baskets or trolleys with all the consumables for daily living. Jesus commands us in the ‘Lord’s Prayer’, to ask ‘Our Heavenly Father’, to “Give us today our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11) He knows our needs, whether material or spiritual and wants us to have our lives sustained holistically, but not to excess. He did not say pray for, ‘hourly cake’, but ‘daily bread!’ Likewise we should not only focus on our material well-being, but on our spiritual health. Jesus, before he began His public ministry, first spent forty days in the desert on a physical and spiritual survival course. Towards the end of this time, Jesus was tempted by the devil, who knew he was starving and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” You can imagine, how the thought of turning these stones to bread, imagining the smell of his mother’s baking when he was a boy, must have filled his mind with the aroma of fresh bread. Yet He responded by quoting from the Old Testament, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every 5 word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Deuteronomy 8:3) Our local farmers and growers seem to have to deal with increasingly tight margins to ensure profitability and with some uncertainty over farming subsidies and what will replace the present system, there is some understandable concern for the future. Through all of this we can still be thankful that in the words of Psalm 24, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” that the Lord does provide for our needs physically, emotionally and spiritually. Do come and join us for our ‘Harvest Thanksgiving Service’ on Sunday 17th September at 10.30 here at St. Peter’s, when we shall echo the words of the Psalm and pray for all those involved in farming and growing.

From the Editor A warm welcome to the September 2017 edition of Ad Vincula and another packed edition it is. No school page this month as everyone’s on holiday but back next month. We have decided to launch a little fun competition to see how far “Ad Vincula” can travel and, at the same time, promote the church Facebook site. See article below. Main events for September are Balloon Festival on 3 September (p23) and Harvest Festival and Auction on 17 September (p17). Other highlights are Report with pictures of the 75th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid Service (p14), Report with pictures of the July Messy Church (p15), a reminder of the one way system to be observed during Term Time morning and afternoon in School Road (p19), Report with pictures of the August Time for God (p25) and Report of Hort Soc trip to Ben’s Acre (p27). I hope you will find something of interest and do please keep all your articles, comments and photos coming to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

How far can you go?

9

Just for fun, we wanted to see how far “Ad Vincula” could travel around the world so we thought we’d launch a little competition. When you go on your travels around the world on holiday or with work, take your copy of Ad Vincula with you, take a photograph (ideally showing a recognisable landmark) and post it on our Facebook Site: https://www.facebook.com/stpeterwg/ or, if you don’t “do Facebook”, you can email your picture to editor@stpeterswg.org.uk and I will post it on your behalf. To start the competition off, we have Jamie Daniell, one of our Churchwardens, with his copy of the August edition in the champagne vine yards at Vitr y- leFrancois, France. A distance of 276 miles from the church of St Peter ad Vincula, Wisborough Green using Google Maps distance between two points. Can you better that? We’d love to hear from you. The Ad Vincula Team

Nature Notes Two pieces of rather personal news this month. One a bit daft – the other rather more dramatic. Firstly – A few weeks ago, I scooped an elephant-hawk moth off the ceiling in the utility room, and watched it fly off into the night, feeling rather pleased with myself for not falling off the ladder. Last week, I found most of the leaves and flowers had gone overnight from one of my fuchsias near the back door. Consulting my gardening guru, he said straightaway “oh yes, hawk-moth caterpillars – they only eat rosebay willow herb and fuchsias” I felt a little aggrieved, but once I’d had a proper look at these two jumbos I couldn’t stay cross! Aren’t they gorgeous!! Like cartoon creatures. Those big ‘eye’ patches ward off predators, and so will I from now on. Secondly - We put up a barn owl box over a year ago, not far away from us. We had all been waiting and hoping for it to be used. Not a sign - until one evening a couple of weeks ago, when an owl was discovered down on the ground. It seemed fairly alert, so as recommended we kept our distance, hoping for it to recover. In the morning it was still down and not moving. When picked up, it was painfully thin and extremely quiet, so 13 we took it down to Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital. I hopefully signed a form saying we’d fetch it for release if it was ok. Back home they’d discovered there was at least one youngster in the box. We were now worried! Was our rescued bird the parent? We took advice from several owl people on what to do. Apparently once the babies are well grown parents often go to roost in peace nearby, just returning to feed once or twice a day. At this point I remembered another box we put up some time ago. (Also at this point it started to rain – a lot!) Then bad news when we called the hospital - our owl was too far gone to survive. The overnight carer couldn’t definitely confirm it wasn’t an adult, so we were even more worried for the youngsters! How long now since they’d eaten?? I decided to keep watch until dark. After a quick sandwich, I trundled over in my car, and found a vantage point at the edge of the field. My little car is very good at steaming up in wet weather, so I was mopping the inside, peering through the rain, wipers going like mad, trying to keep warm and listening to Radio 4! After about hour and a half I began to wonder “why am I here??” Then I got my answer. As the light faded, a graceful white shape floated across the field, obviously hunting. All was well! None of us knew those owls were breeding there! It’s such a privilege to have a new family – just very sad to lose one of them. They are such iconic birds – an overused word, I know, but appropriate I feel. May the others grow and thrive! Left: A Barn Owl in flight

75th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid Service On Sunday 6th August, St. Peter’s welcomed the Canadian Veterans’ Association of the UK with friends and supporters from far and wide. This was the 75th Anniversary of the raid that took place in Dieppe in 1942. We were joined by representatives from the Canadian Embassy and a number of Officers representing the British Armed Forces and the Royal British Legion. Billingshurst Section was also in attendance and a number of uniformed youth organisations. Wreaths were laid by many of the representatives, including Wisborough Green Parish Council and St Peter’s, remembering the debt we owe to all those who gave their lives in the service of freedom.

Messy Church 18 July 2017 Our July Messy Church ‘I am the True Vine’ was messy in parts! Children ‘trod grapes’ (purple paint and sponges) and walked, ‘grapes’ on the vine as they went! There were some beautifully created creatures made from vegetables and we all had the opportunity to write a prayer and put it on the vine. Fish fingers and chips for tea, were enjoyed by all!.

HARVEST FESTIVAL, HARVEST AUCTION and THE ELLIOTT FUND It is little known that Wisborough Green is fortunate to have a local charity, The Elliott Fund, set up in 1895 by a legacy from Harriet Elliott. The trust exists to provide a modest source of funds from which temporary help can be given to those in the village who fall upon hard times for whatever reasons. There have been many instances when these funds have been of immense help, but, as would be expected, have remained anonymous. The Trust is managed by the Trustees who are the Vicar and Churchwardens of the Parish. It has become a tradition in the village that funds for this Charity have been raised by way of a HARVEST AUCTION held on the Sunday evening after the Harvest Festival Service. This year, as before, the auction is being hosted by Craig, the landlord of THE CRICKETERS at 7.30pm on Sunday 17th September. In line with tradition, the first ‘Harvest Pint’ will be pulled by the Vicar, or his representative, and a Harvest Hymn will be sung before the auction gets 17 under way.

PLEASE HELP TO RAISE MONEY FOR THIS LOCAL CHARITY by  Coming to the Harvest Festival Service in the Church on Sunday 17 September at 10.30am bringing as much produce as you can from your garden or food store* or any other items that will sell at the auction; and/or  Coming to the Harvest Auction at The Cricketers by 7.30pm with stuff to sell, a full wallet and being ready to enjoy yourselves. All money raised will go to the Elliott Charity.  As well as fresh items, tinned goods, bottles, jam, flowers, plants, pickled onions etc are all appreciated. In the past, even a television was sold!

SCHOOL ROAD - PARKING AND TRAFFIC As the new school year starts this September motorists are reminded that there is a voluntary one-way traffic scheme in School Road, Wisborough Green, Mondays to Fridays during term time.  The system operates between 08.30 and 09.15 hours in the morning and again between 15.00 and 15.45 hours in the afternoon.  All motorists - parents dropping off or picking up children from the school or other drivers should enter the School Road one-way system from the A 272 Billingshurst Road by the duck pond and exit School Road at the junction with Newpound Lane. (see diagram below)  This also applies to anyone parking in the village hall car park who should NOT turn left towards the A272 passing the duck pond but continue straight ahead towards Newpound Lane. In the past some drivers have NOT been observing this voluntar y agreement and causing traffic to meet head on and causing obstructions. For the safety of the children and in consideration for residents, motorists should observe this one way scheme and should not park longer than necessary at drop off and pick up times. The one-way traffic system agreement with Wisborough Parish Council, Wisborough Primary School and School residents.

Village Hall News Existing Proposed I am pleased to say that, by the time this article appears, our application for planning consent will have been submitted to Chichester DC. Once the paperwork has been processed by Chichester DC, details of the application will be available via the usual route through its website. We shall also post details and a summary on the village website. The team has done everything it can to secure a successful outcome but at the end of the day the decision rests with the Planning Committee. Planning decisions can take several weeks. Once we have a decision, we can hopefully move to the next phase of obtaining quotes for the works prior to seeking grant monies to top up our funds. I shall report further progress in due course. Time for God Service Sunday 13 August 2017 Our August Time for God service gave thanks for holidays (holy days) and days of rest, which are part of God’s plan for us. He created the earth in six days and on the seventh day He rested we are told in Genesis (the first book of the Bible). We all need to take time to relax as a family or with friends so that we are fired up and not burnt out! We thought about this as we made aeroplanes out of a peg and lolly sticks, beach biscuits, origami and memory photo frames.

Join us for the next Time For God Service as we think of being part of a team on Sunday 10th September at 10.30am at St Peter’s.

The Parishes Wildlife Group Update Dragonfly survey The weekly dragonfly survey of the River Kird has been taking place with very helpful permissions from the landowners. There will be a break over the summer but it will resume to check up on late flying species in September and a report will be produced and circulated when it finishes.

Water condition training course Jill attended a training course on monitoring river habitats run by the South Downs National Park in July and we had a look at three different sections of the River Rother adjacent to the Cowdray ruins.

Moths and bats The group had a couple of marvellous talks in July in the Wisborough Green Village Hall - one by Dave Green on moths and one by Sarah Hughes on bats. Dave placed a couple of moth light traps in some suitable habitat and the following morning we all met in the garden of the Three Crowns public house and examined the species. Luckily we had Dave with us. The books he recommends are: Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Paul Waring, Martin Townsend and illustrated by Richard Lewington, 3rd edition, 2017; and Field Guide to the Micro-moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Phil Sterling (2012). 26

The Parishes Wildlife group is contemplating obtaining its own moth trap next year and putting it out once a month in different parts of the village overnight and then identifying the contents the following morning. Sarah Hughes, Community wildlife officer based at Chichester District Council and working for the Manhood Wildlife and Heritage group, MWHG, illustrated her fascinating talk on the bats we would find living locally with the sounds they make. Then we gathered our outdoor gear for our walk only to find the weather to be diabolical!! So we had to postpone our walk with detectors. Look out for posters and information about a talk and look at dormice in September to be given by Petra Billings. Jill Sutcliffe and Mike King Parishes Wildlife Group 01403 700395

Horticultural Society’s Visit to Ben’s Acre The Horticultural Society’s Garden visit on Monday 7 th August to Ben’s Acre in Horsham should rightly have the Latin title “multum in Parvo” for I think I have never seen so much in such a small space, and the ‘multum’ covers not only much in quantity, but quality and variety as well. As for the ‘Parvo’, the ‘little’ garden starts off as the width of the house and gradually narrows as it climbs up the hill. From the air, I imagine, it might resemble a slice of highly decorated cake! It was fascinating to see the photographs of the early construction forty years ago. The steep slope carved into terraces with attractive stone walls and wide, shallow steps. The lower terrace contained a formal pond and the next one a circular stone paved area with a curved stone bench; the next a small lawn and another small pond with a bubbling fountain. Finally, at the very top of the garden, the best view point, a summer house. All these areas are connected with little paths and steps (with self-sown verbena bonariensis sprouting up between cracks), inviting you to explore through archways into the next secret garden room. All around the garden were n u m e r o u s benches, seats and a r b o u rs 27 (framed with hone ys uck les and clematis, the sort the Scots call ‘Sitooteries’), all with differing views of the colours, shapes and textures of the planting. We all had our favourites, and mine was the variety of the box and yew topiary, wild and exotic shapes as well as formal box balls and pillars, dotted between the looser planting of pelargoniums, persicarias, salvias, roses and geraniums - the list goes on … Lining the steps and placed among the planting were terracotta pots overflowing with sedums and succulents in their great variety of shapes and glorious blue/green colours. What a wonderful afternoon! Our thanks go to our hosts Pauline and Brian - also thanks for the delicious tea and cakes - and the rain held off. What more could one ask for! Wendy Duff

Update Broadford Bridge Exploratory Drilling Site, Adversane Firstly, thank you to all who contributed to the consultation concerning the application to West S us s ex C o un t y Council by the company UKOG/ KOGL seeking extra time at the Broadford Bridge drilling site. WSCC were quite specific in their conditions attached to the planning permission - the then company Celtique Energie had 3 years from when work started.....and work started on Sept 15th, 2014 so should finish in the 30 middle of September. Incidentally, WSCC usually do accept representations after the formal deadline which was August 10th. By law anyone has the right to submit letters right up until the decision day which, is earmarked for September 12th so, if you haven't contributed there is still time...You need to quote the Ref No: WSCC/029/17/WC and you can put it in on line or on one of the postcards in pubs and shops round the villages The drilling did not go quite to plan at the end of July and the company encountered a "wash out" necessitating the drilling of a side track which, according to industry information provided by Schlumberger, defines a washout as: An enlarged region of a wellbore. A washout in an openhole section is larger than the original hole size or size of the drill bit. Washout enlargement can be caused by excessive bit jet velocity, soft or unconsolidated formations, in-situ rock stresses, mechanical damage by BHA components, chemical attack and swelling or weakening of shale as it contacts fresh water. Generally speaking, washouts become more severe with time. Appropriate mud types, mud additives and increased mud densitycan minimize washouts. Local people saw calcium carbonate being delivered to the site - a clue that there was a washout zone in the well. This material is used as a Lost Circulation Material (LCM). So, the process is not free of risk after all. Local groups are funding air and water monitoring by independent consultants so that we can check what is happening. Crouchland Biogas Update. Crouchland Biogas Limited in administration – 7th August 2017 Partners at FRP Advisory have been appointed as joint administrators to Crouchland Biogas Limited. The joint administrators continue to trade the business and retain its 11 staff while seeking new investment and ownership. The joint administrators will continue to evaluate the financial position of the Company in the interests of creditors. Prior to entering administration the Company had lodged an appeal against enforcement notices from Chichester District Council and against West Sussex County Council's refusal to grant retrospective planning permission for, amongst other things, a massive lagoon, digester and gas upgrading equipment at Crouchland Farm. A decision on those appeals is expected by the end of September.

Crouchland Farm trading as normal while buyers sought for freehold land. Receivers at FRP Advisory appointed over farmland Partners at FRP Advisory have been appointed as Law of Property Act receivers over the freehold land known as Crouchland Farm abutting to, but excluding the farmhouse property. The farming activities continue as normal over Crouchland Farm, while the LPA Receivers encourage interested parties in the freehold land to make early contact. The land totals an area of over 400 acres. Contact; James Rossiter from Morgan Rossiter, who handles the external communications for FRP Advisory: 0203 195 3240

Recipe of the Month

PLUM FUDGE PUDDINGS This is a lovely simple and seasonal dessert recipe using plums (I use Victoria plums from tree in my garden)!

Ingredients SERVES 4  50g unsalted butter  50g honey  2 tablespoons double cream  2 tablespoons soft brown sugar  1 teaspoon ground mixed spice  75g fresh white breadcrumbs (easily done in a food processor)  2 ripe plums, halved, stoned and thinly sliced  Crème fraiche to serve NEED 4 RAMEKINS, 150ml each

33

Method 1. Put the butter, honey and cream into a saucepan and heat until melted. Put the sugar, spice and breadcrumbs into a bowl and mix thoroughly. 2. Divide half the buttery fudge mixture between the ramekin dishes and top with a layer of plum slices and half the breadcrumb mix. Add the remaining plums and breadcrumbs then spoon over the remaining sauce. 3. Set the ramekins on a baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees C (400 degrees F) Gas 6 for 20 minutes. 4. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 5 minutes then carefully unmould the puddings and serve with a spoonful of crème fraiche. (Obviously you can leave the puddings in the ramekins to serve.)

Neighbourhood Watch Wildlife crime Sussex has large expanses of rural areas and police have worked hard to develop strong links to these communities as a way of ensuring the issues surrounding wildlife crime are not overlooked. Within Sussex we have expert Wildlife Crime Officers who are regular police officers or PCSOs but take on this role in addition to their main duties. They investigate a wide range of complex wildlife offences and provide expert advice and support to police officers across Sussex.

What is wildlife crime? Examples of wildlife crime include:       

Hare coursing Deer poaching Fish poaching Badger persecution – including baiting, snaring, shooting, and disturbance of setts Bat persecution Egg theft / collection Bird of prey persecution – through poisoning, trapping, shooting, disturbance of nest and/or theft of chicks 34  The trade in ivory, tortoises, rhino horn and other protected species covered by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) including caviar, traditional Chinese medicines and orchids  Non-registration of certain birds and animals that require licensing through DEFRA/ Animal Health if kept in captivity or sold

Report it If you are concerned about instances of wildlife crime in your area - for example, poaching or trading in endangered species - or have any information that may be helpful to our Wildlife Crime Officers, please tell us by calling 101.

Fraud spree in Chichester area prompts police warning Police in Chichester have seen a recent increase in fraud offences in and around the city, and are warning people - and particularly elderly and vulnerable people - to be on their guard against being tricked. Local banks and building societies have also been made aware and will call police if customers asking to withdraw large amounts of cash give any cause for concern. Latest incidents have involved victims being telephoned by fraudsters purporting to be police officers, bank officials or representatives of other seemingly trustworthy organisations. They provide a convincing reason for people to withdraw a large amount of cash which will then be collected by a courier. Detective Constable Claire Daysh, of Chichester investigations, said:"We think it's possible that the offenders are going through telephone directories to obtain the addresses and numbers of potential victims."

- Crime News & Advice She warned that offenders and their stories were often extremely plausible, another trick being to get victims to part with personal details, PIB numbers or bank cards, and added: "Genuine organisations would never ask anyone to do this. "These criminals do target the most vulnerable members of our community, so please alert your relatives, neighbours or friends who you think might be susceptible to such an approach." If at all suspicious, people should avoid using their own telephone for several minutes after a suspicious call, to avoid the possibility of the line being held open by the offenders, but instead contact police on 101 as soon as possible using a mobile telephone or a neighbour's landline, quoting Operation Edisto. They can also email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or report details to the police online. Should a visit from a courier have been arranged or carried out very recently, dial 999 immediately.

Sussex supermarket shoppers reminded to be on alert for thieves Police are reminding supermarket shoppers across Sussex to be on the alert for thieves. This follows a recent spate of incidents in which supermarket customers, and some other shoppers, have been watched whilst entering their PIN numbers and have then had their purses and wallets stolen as they leave the store. Suspects then withdraw large amounts of cash from nearby cash machines before the victims are aware. The two men pictured, working with others, are believed to have been successful in obtaining nearly ÂŁ20,000 by targeting victims in this way. Since November last year there have been 22 such reports in Sussex; The men in the photo, taken at Sainsburys in Worthing on 20 June, are described as of Eastern European appearance, one bald and the other with dark hair. Anyone who recognises the men or who has any further information is asked to contact Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting reference 47170066290. If you see anyone behaving suspiciously in this way, alert store security staff or dial 999. Investigator Kayleigh Bartup said: "We are also working with the large supermarket brands to raise awareness about these incidents among staff and customers. Be alert and aware of strangers when shopping in large supermarkets and NEVER leave your bag or trolley unattended at any point. Try not to be distracted by strangers, and also be alert for any suspicious activity around your vehicle which you should keep secured. "It appears that these men, and others, may strike up to twice a day in different towns, and then lay low for a while, so we need to maintain awareness even when there are no reports." If you have information about any crime call 101, email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999. Wisborough Green History - JAME Last month I described how Graveley Brothers, the precursor to James Pearce's business, started operating from Butts Works soon after the end of the First World War and continued through the Thirties. The company also serviced many of the local traders' vehicles and private cars. A selection of photos of commercial vehicles sold or maintained by them is shown. These were taken in the Thirties and were photographed either in the works or alongside the front wall that is now the site of West Gates. (A small orchard occupied this site that was part of the garden of Farthinghoe next door.) The vehicles belonged to: 36

 Booker & Payne, butchers of Petworth  Wadey (builders?) of Wisborough Green  LWM, wholesale motor factors of Guildford  G Knight & Sons, bakers of Worthing. This is probably the same Knights that ran the bakeries in Petworth and Wisborough Green, but not to be confused with Knights the butchers. During the Second World War, the company turned to the manufacture of munitions; the machines were operated by some of the village women. For the latter part of the war the pumps were commandeered by the Canadian Army. In the run up to D-Day, lines of DUKW amphibian vehicles and lorries could often be seen queuing for petrol while the pumps were wound by hand. During the war, Vernon Graveley was the sergeant in charge of the special constables in the area. He also ensured that the right to hold the annual fair on the green on 20th September each year was maintained despite it being officially suspended during the war.

ES E PEARCE (SUSSEX) LTD (Cont) He set up an Aunt Sally stall on the green which consisted of a large doll's head of an old woman set up on a stick, the object being to throw balls at it with the intention of knocking off her hat to win a prize. Interestingly, despite Vernon's actions, there was opposition to the fair continuing after the war. After the war, the motor business continued as before, but the company also started manufacturing shop window displays for Display Schemes Ltd of London These mainly consisted of toys, such as mechanical ‘men’, that could move and dance and miniature vehicles that sped around tracks. They were all moved by electric powered 37 carriers that ran in tracks underneath the display with magnets being used to draw the vehicles around. The company also made domestic equipment such as mincing machines. Vernon Graveley died in 1956 and shortly afterwards Jack sold the service station business and the newer part of Thornton House (now called Pimpernel House) to Vernon Wilde. He retained the workshops, now known as Butts Works, which he let to Wilde until James Pearce took over the lease in 1969. Jack Graveley moved into the old Butts Farm House that was restored to being a separate dwelling called Thornton Cottage. He remained there until he died in 1973. Continued next month Richard B

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Continue to feed and dead-head your hanging baskets and container plants, they will often keep going until the first frosts.  Start to divide herbaceous perennials as the weather cools.  Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths now.  Keep dead-heading your Penstemons, Dahlias and Roses to prolong flowering.  Cut off the foliage of maincrop potatoes at ground level 3 weeks before lifting them to prevent blight spores infecting the tubers as you lift them. This will also help to firm the skins of the potatoes improving their storage qualities.  Keep feeding and watering French and runner beans to make the most of them. When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down.  Start planting overwinter onions and garlic, including elephant garlic, for early crops the following year.  Cover your brassicas with netting to prevent birds making a meal out of them.  Pot up strawberry runners to make extra plants for next year. Plant out any rooted runners of strawberries for a good crop next year.  Mow long grass under fruit trees to make it easier to spot windfall fruits.  Look out for rotting fruits on your pear, apple and plum trees. Pick them off as they will spread disease if left on the tree.  Take hardwood cuttings to increase your stock of currants, gooseberries & figs.

WI Report On the 3rd August a group of members/husbands/partners met at The Foresters in Kirdford to learn more about the sport of Petanque or Boules as it is widely known in this part of the world. Mel Roberts and her husband Paul gave us the basic rules and etiquette of the game which some of us ignored or actually took note of. We had a super time throwing the shiny metallic balls all over the place trying to get the closest to the cochonnet (piglet) in French! I bet you didn’t know that Fanny is the goddess of petanque and that being a fanny (etre fanny) means losing a game of boules without scoring a single point. Well some of us managed to fanny about quite well!! I can recommend this game; just see Mel for more information. The games were then followed by a lovely meal and a jolly good time was had by all. Four members took part in the County Quiz at Fittleworth on the 8 th August. The least said about that the better! For our next meeting on the 7th September we will be back at the village hall for a ‘Spinning & Fibre Art’ demonstration. You can’t say that we’re not eclectic in our activities! Weather Watch

49

Wisborough Green Rainfall for July was 92mm – last year 42mm and my 9 yr average 54mm, so definitely a much wetter July Highest temperature in July was 35.2°C at St Helier, (Jersey) and the coldest temp was recorded at Altnaharra (Sutherland) 0.5°C. Higher night-time temperatures have been notable again. Sunshine levels were 90% of the average with Jersey recording the highest hours of sunshine. With the advantage of hindsight the Channel Islands were the place to be in July and to have avoided the North West – somewhat obvious really! Weathervane

Village Hall 50 Club Draw The winner of the August draw is Susan Killingbeck who wins £50 The winner of the second prize of £20 is Sylvia Tilley The September draw will be at The Bat and Ball at 6.30 pm on Tuesday 5 September and if any member or prospective member would like to attend they will be very welcome Ruth Andrews, 01403 700671

Saturday 21st October (4.00pm matinee performance) The Mill Studio, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford We shall be taking the Minibus to this performance of ‘Morecambe’ by Tm Whitnall ‘A show that will bring sunshine into the lives of all who see it.’ (Daily Telegraph) The one-man show, Morecambe by Tim Whitnall is more than just a monologue. It forms an incredibly emotional yet hilarious evocation of a perennial national treasure, Eric Morecambe. It takes its audience back to 1984 to join the much-loved comedian for the penultimate stop on his heavenward journey, reminiscing, before dancing off into immortality. Lighted Fools Theatre Company is proud to be presenting one of the first amateur productions in the country of this acclaimed show. Directed by Richard Parish with David Webb as Eric Morecambe Tickets for the performance are £15.00 and the Minibus fare will be £4.00 (+£2.00 insurance if you are not a member of the Minibus Association) Please ring: RICHARD PARISH (700628) as soon as possible to book both your ticket and your seat on the bus
