Pastoral Letter ‘Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil’ Luke 4:1-2a Maths was never my favourite subject at school! Fractions, percentages, log tables!?! Nothing involved in arithmetic connected with me. Yet I know it is a vital ingredient of everyday living and, for some, a key component in their daily work. In the Bible we even have a Book of Numbers in the Old Testament. Numbers play an important part in God’s plan for our salvation. Take for example the number forty. In Genesis chapter 8 we hear that, after forty days of rain, Noah opened a window in the Ark to release a raven. Moses, in the Book of Exodus, spent two periods of forty days on Mount Sinai communicating with God and receiving the Ten Commandments. After this the Hebrew people were unwilling to listen to Moses and spent forty years roaming the desert before they were allowed to enter the Promised Land. Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness waiting on God in prayer and preparing himself for his coming ministry. The forty days of Lent mirrors that time Jesus spent praying and fasting in the wilderness. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday 1st March and runs through to Easter Day on 16th April. For many today Lent can be used as a time of reflection and renewal, both spiritually and physically. Do join us on this year’s Parish Quiet Day on Saturday 18 th March at The Bishop’s Palace in Chichester. This will be led by The Revd. Ian Smale (The Cathedral Missioner) known to many as ‘Ishmael’, singer and composer whose songs 5 have been sung around the world for over forty years. A sign up sheet for those wishing to attend, is in St Peter’s. We are also running a Lent course once a week over six weeks. Details below. Folk are often challenged to do forty acts of kindness and goodness, one for each day, or more if you wish. Some choose to restrict their diet, leaving certain food and drink off the menu until Easter: chocolate, sweets and alcohol being some of the most popular. Whatever you choose to do, remember that the Church is open each day for reflection and prayer. So why not make the coming forty days count and treat yourself and others in an all together different way during Lent.

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. Wisborough Green Primary School News It is hard to believe we are half way through the school year. It feels like spring is just around the corner and we are all looking forward to the warmer weather. We spotted the first signs of spring in our garden this week and preparations are underway to transform our outside area. The children had a special visit to the Hindu Temple in Crawley, where they enjoyed an explosion of dance. They had fun learning about another religious culture and seeing inside the beautiful temple. Our older children took a step back in time when they visited the stunning Chichester Cathedral. Finding out about the past and touring the historic town, helped them to develop their skills as historians. This has supported their studies in school as they try to find out what really happened on the Titanic! Our curriculum really does provide the children with great opportunities to learn about many different subjects. Music is definitely one of our favourites! We have all learned to ‘sing and sign’ a song in preparation for National Deaf Awareness Week in May. Families and friends enjoyed a fantastic celebration of music at our piano assembly and the ukuleles have made an appearance again. The children are thoroughly enjoying learning them along with some fun songs. Move over Carol Vorderman, the children at WGPS are the maths masters of the future! There really is a buzz around school when we are learning maths. We love to solve problems and especially love a challenge! Maths isn't just about answering 11 calculations any more, it is about finding patterns and relationships. 1, 2, 3, 5 … who do we appreciate? Can you continue the mathematical sequence? One of our seven ‘behaviour for learning’ words is CREATIVITY and we have been thinking about how we can be more creative. We came up with what CREATIVITY means to us and agreed that we need to:  fix or solve problems

Pollinators in need - how to save the small things which run the planet Day in day out our native pollinating insects go about their business helping to provide us with food. Amazingly there are over 1500 species of pollinators in England, including over 250 hoverflies, 250 solitary bees, 24 species of bumblebee and many flies, moths, beetles and butterflies. These pollinators are a vital part of nature, pollinating a large proportion of our wild plants and trees, while also being vital to our food production. Without these pollinators visiting flowers there would be no strawberries, apples, peas, beans, pears and plums, and looking further afield no chocolate, olives, cotton or peanuts. Many pollinators have declined as a result of significant losses of wildflowers and inappropriate pesticide use, and they all need our help. Our pollinators are at such risk that the government has produced a National Pollinator Strategy. The wildlife charity Buglife is at the forefront of pollinator conservation in the UK. It is working across towns, cities and our countryside to enthuse people to take action. One of Buglife’s key pollinator programmes is B-Lines – which is aiming to develop a network of wildflower-rich habitats across the UK. B-Lines are a network of routes running through our countryside and towns linking together the best of our existing wildlife sites. Over time, and with help around the country, we will join these sites up by ‘filling’ the B Lines with new wildflower-rich areas. These new flower-rich areas will provide food for pollinators as well as helping them move around the country in response to climate change. Everyone who owns or manages and lives or works within one of the B-Lines can make a difference. Add up a lot of even the smallest actions and they will benefit pollinators. The Church of England has considerable land holdings within its churchyards, burial grounds and other estates. Large areas of this land is already being managed to help conserve wildlife, however there is always more than can be done. Work for pollinators can take many forms, from maintaining areas of wildflower meadow to simple operations like cutting the grass a little less often can encourage wildflowers to flower - providing food for bees and other insect pollinators. Planting spring flowering native trees and shrubs can provide early spring pollen and nectar, and flowering ivy offers food late into the autumn. In addition we can achieve much much more by passing on the message and enthusing others to participate on their own land, in their gardens on other community space. The Church of England is working with Buglife by looking to see how its land assets within the B-Lines can offer more for pollinators. In addition it wishes to mobilise people in parishes along the B-Lines to take action themselves – whether this is a farmer who can restore wildflowers to part of his farm, a school who can plant pollinator friendly trees and shrubs, or a gardener who can plant pollinator friendly flowers. PTA SPRINGING INTO ACTION Wisborough Green School PTA is looking forward to a particularly busy Spring/Summer period, as we are under real pressure this year to support the school in its funding. Budgets have never been tighter most particularly in West Sussex, which receives less funding than any other area of the country as highlighted in the recent WorthLess campaign that you may have seen featuring in the media. Small schools such as ours are in very real peril as a result. The PTA is therefore doing all it can to raise funds for essentials such as dictionaries, laptops and other vital resources in support. We have therefore added some new events to our usual offering, and hope the village will support us as much as possible! We will be very grateful for any sponsorship at all, prizes, manpower, skills, monetary donations or anything else anyone can think of! It all really does help. And we hope to see lots of people attending the events we are organising. The calendar for 2017 is as follows:  Friday 10th March, doors open 7pm – Quiz Night including Fish and Chip Supper tickets available from the school office. Teams of 8 max. £10 per ticket. 14

 Saturday 1st April – Our Good Old Fashioned Jumble Sale – books, toys, bric-a-brac and much, much more. 11.00am – 1.00pm £1 entry.  Thursday 6th April – Easter Egg Hunt – 3.15pm. All village children welcome.  Saturday 13th May (prov) – Family Karaoke Night & Disco - £1 entry, £1 per song.  Saturday 17th June (prov) - Summer Festival on the Green – from 12.00 noon. SCHOOL CROSSING PATROL – DESPERATELY SEEKING VOLUNTEERS As a school we have been looking at the issue of road safety within the village for a number of months now, and have identified the need for road crossing assistance on Durbans road, just by the lay by. Parked cars, increased traffic, including the speed of that traffic, is repeatedly putting our children at risk. Several ‘near misses’ have been reported, and we shall be doing our best to raise the issue across the area. There are plans in place to address some of the problems, but it is an immediate solution that we need to avoid a tragedy. We are therefore looking for some volunteers to assist us in manning a school crossing. It really is something that is desperately needed and, sadly, funding is not available. We are therefore appealing to our local community to help us in our quest. Full training and equipment will be provided. For further information, see below.

Lollipop Volunteers Required Wisborough Green Primary School is looking to set up a traffic patrol to help the school children cross Durban's Road in the morning (8.30am - 9am) and the afternoon (3pm - 3.30pm). Do you have a couple of mornings afternoons when you could help?

Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club When you read this the season will be nearly over. 1 st XI will only have 3 games left and could finish any where from 2 nd to 6th with only 4 points separating 2nd from 6th and, having played 16 league games, they are currently 5 th in the West Sussex Premier league but a tight end to the season is going to sort out the men from the boys. The second XI have played 15 games and are sitting in 3 rd spot of their respective league but look as if they could end up 4th or 5th if results don’t go their way. Only 3 games left and all at home so get out and support them whenever you can. For fixtures please look on the league web site www.full-time.thefa.com - this is not always reliable but is the best place to look for fixtures. Cricket Club Nets will commence at the end of March (indoors) and will run on into April. The new season starts 1st week of May. New players are always welcome. ‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ Page Well a couple of moans this month again. Dog poo seems to be the main concern even on one lady’s front lawn just outside her window. (see picture). Why have a dog if you are not capable of looking after it? The other moan this month is litter, obviously being thrown from a car in Durban’s road. If you see it happening take a number and report it. This is the only way we will stop it. Spring is coming; get out and think what you can do to improve the village this month, Wash a sign, sweep your path, cut the verge opposite your house. Come on, let’s tidy up the village. Underused Car Park near Billingshurst Rail Station In case some of you are not aware, Myrtle Lane Pay and Display Car Park in Billingshurst, is Council-provided and currently underused. A short walk from Billingshurst train station, it provides 33 new parking spaces in the village. The car park is open Monday - Saturday. For day commuters there is a pay and display machine with a day charge of £3.50.

Parish Consultation Event 11 February 2017 Thank you to everyone who attended the consultation event on Saturday 11 th February, which included Parish Council traffic management ideas as well as the exciting plans for the Village Hall and Pavilion. Useful feedback was provided and the Parish Council will now analyse the results for the traffic ideas and provide a further update in a future newsletter. Watch this space! A new community noticeboard will shortly be installed outside the village shop. This noticeboard is to replace the use of the railings and will be managed by the Parish Council. The advertising space is for non-commercial advertising in the village, such as the many community events that take place throughout the year. For those who will use the board, please remember to remove old posters when the event has taken place as well as any fixings that have been used. What is Community Speed Watch?  A locally driven initiative where members of the community, with the support of the Police, monitor vehicle speeds using detection devices.  Speeding vehicles are referred to the police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce speed.  Volunteers receive training and are supported by the neighbourhood policing team.  The scheme aims to cater for the problem of real or perceived speed related offending.  Through partnership with the community, it can help to:    

Draft Public Spaces Protection Order, Control of Dogs 2017 Notification of Consultation Chichester District Council is consulting on the draft Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for Control of Dogs 2017. The PSPO replaces the Dog Control Orders (DCOs) which exist across the District. The draft PSPO does not change any of the existing controls that are in the DCOs. We are undertaking a consultation exercise to enable views and opinions of stakeholders and the public to be considered before proceeding with the orders. Update MARCH 11TH - PARISHES WILDLIFE DAY Two years ago, the company seeking to develop an Exploratory site for Oil/Gas on land to the south of Boxal Bridge, Celtique Energie, withdrew from the Public Inquiry (established as a result of the company appealing the decision, made by West Sussex County Council on July 22nd 2014, to refuse permission). Research has shown that due to noise and light which would have accompanied such a development rare wildlife would have been disturbed and moved away. So, keep a watch out for species you see on March 11th and let Jill or Mike know. Three weeks ago there was a Grey Wagtail scrabbling about on the edge of the iced up pond which, unlike their relative the Pied Wagtail, are grey above and warm yellow below; a Blackcap singing in the willow, a bird which used to migrate away from the English winter but now stays over; and a Red Kite flying overhead. JOINT MINERALS LOCAL PLAN FOR WEST SUSSEX West Sussex County Council and the South Downs National Park Authority are 29 working in partnership to prepare a new Joint Minerals Local Plan for W Sussex. This will replace the existing Minerals Local Plan (2003). The Plan has now been published, prior to its submission to the Secretary of State, to allow for representations to be made on its ‘soundness’ and ‘legal compliance’, until 13 March 2017. For further information on the West Sussex Joint Minerals Local Plan visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/mwdf (click on New Minerals Local Plan) and send any comments you might wish to make to: planning.applications@westsussex.gov.uk. The latest version of the plan has one policy (M7b) which deals with hydraulic fracturing. This prevents the process in the South Downs National Park and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and the most vulnerable water source zones. Another policy (M7a) allows oil and gas exploration without hydraulic fracturing in the national park and AONBs only in exceptional circumstances and in the public interest. Thus, other areas in Sussex would be at risk but, according to the British Geological Society, the use of fracking or similar techniques to extract fossil fuels should never be used near any faults…. and, as the Weald is full of faults some geologists suggest that such extraction techniques should be banned altogether in such areas. Furthermore, a key issue is that of Climate Change, the UK legislation and the recent accord signed in Paris which requires fossil fuels need to stay in the ground. Recipe of the Month

Coconut and Lime Chicken This recipe is a quick and easy supper dish using chicken thighs, which are more succulent and cheaper than the breast. It is also very tasty.  8 chicken thighs, boneless and skinless  2 tablespoons oil

Marinade     

1x200ml carton coconut cream (not milk) 2 tablespoons runny honey 3 tablespoons Thai red curry paste Juice and finely grated zest of 2 limes Salt and pepper

Method 1. Whisk together the marinade ingredients in a bowl until combined and season well. 2. Toss the chicken thighs in the marinade so they are well covered and cover the bowl with cling film and leave in the fridge overnight, or if time is tight, at least 30 minutes. 31 3. Preheat a large frying pan until very hot, add the oil. Remove the chicken from the marinade and cook until golden brown- about 3 minutes a side. Lower the heat, cover, and cook through, another 10 - 15 minutes. Arrange in a serving dish. 4. Pour the marinade into the same frying pan, bring to the boil and reduce for a minute or so to thicken slightly. Pour over the cooked chicken. 5. Serve hot with lime wedges, prawn crackers and rice. Wisborough Green History - MY LIFE DURI A few months ago, Gerald Andrews wrote about his experiences as a wartime evacuee from Peckham who, at the age of six, was billeted with Mr. and Mrs. Skinner at 6 Upfield Villas in Durbans Road. He has now written some more of his wartime memories. One of my earliest memories of the war in London was the removal of the gate and railings from the front of the house. I could not swing on it anymore, I witnessed a similar act taking place in Wisborough Green that was the removal of the road signposts. These signpost were in keeping with the village, unlike the ones we have today. I suppose the reason I remember these signs are because the London boys would swing on them and leave them facing the wrong way. Then came the Local Defence Volunteers, later known as the Home Guard. The Officers were gentry from the village and the “Band of Brothers” was made up from the men who were not conscripted, either they were too old or had a reserved occupation. I watched many Home Guard training sessions taking place on the Village Green. The photo shows them posed in front of the old pavilion (just south of the present one).

One evening in the Eighties, I was talking to a neighbour about the war and he told me this little story. A squadie who will remain nameless, would keep missing the training nights and the officers decided to take him to task. A room was set aside in the Three Crowns public house to hear the case. The soldier in question was marched into the room and made to stand to attention in front of their desk. The officers started to dress him down and he said to them, “I have had enough of this, I've got to get up early in the morning to milk the cows” and he just turned around and walked out.

ING THE WAR - GERALD ANDREWS (Part 1) In August and September of 1940, which is known as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Battle of Britainâ&#x20AC;?, the war really started. The German air force attacked England and in particular the South and London. During the day we would watch the battles being fought in the air, the sky would be full of vapour trails which were made by the dog fights taking place. It was impossible to distinguish the planes or who was being shot at. All you could do was hope and pray that the one at the back was a Spitfire or Hurricane. It is interesting to note that I had the pleasure of meeting Douglas Bader one of our aces in 1978. Sometimes planes were shot down; the nearest German plane to Wisborough Green to be shot down was a Messerschmitt 110 that crashed near Toat Monument. During the day the bombing of London was relentless, we would see the occasional 33 German bomber making its way home and possibly refuelling and returning that night. Mr. Skinner was now an Auxiliary Police Constable and sometimes when he came home and I had not gone to bed. We would go out into the back garden and look north where the sky would be lit up from the blitz on London and the Searchlights scouring the sky in hope of picking up a bomber or two. Wisborough Green had its own Searchlight, which was strategically placed on the north side of Hughes Hill, Newpound. Around the date of 10th September 1940, the Germans dropped incendiary bombs, onto Wisborough Green, and the surrounding areas, many of them fell on Howfold Farm but did not do any serious damage, I am sure it was that night because it was my brother's birthday and Mum and Dad were staying with us. Another night a land mine attached to a parachute came down on Sole Farm. It landed in the corner of the field opposite Brook Cottage, Durbans Road but only superficial damage was done to the house. The last bombing in the area, that I can tell you about, is very sad. On Tuesday 29th September 1942 a lone German Bomber was aiming its bombs at Petworth House that was occupied by Canadian soldiers at the time. They missed the house and bombed a boys school which was situated at the junction of the A272 and the A283, killing 28 boys, a teacher and the Head Master, plus injuring a large number of other boys. Many of the boys were evacuees from London. There is a mass grave in the chapel grounds that was beside the school. (Continued next month) Richard B.

Tackling elder exploitation in our communities Katy Bourne, the Police & Crime Commissioner for Sussex, has made tackling elder exploitation one of her top priorities in a bid to protect older people in the county from financial abuse. She says: “We know that fraud against our older and more vulnerable residents is a growing issue as our population ages and criminals see that fraud is more profitable and less risky than other crimes. In Sussex, fraud has robbed some older people of their entire life savings and left others destitute. “I have been lobbying the Government to take account of demographics when calculating the amount of funding that is allocated to each police force and to acknowledge the rise in crimes against our elderly. “The operational response from Sussex Police has also been excellent. They have developed Operation Signature to help protect and support those most at risk of fraud, and the model has been nationally recognised and is being adopted by other police forces. “The problem is that many people don’t realise that they’ve been a victim of fraud – they think it’s just a scam, or they feel foolish and don’t want to tell anyone. But scams are fraud and fraud is a crime so I really would urge anyone who’s affected by doorstep crime, postal fraud or nuisance calls to report it.” You can call the police on 101 or report fraud by speaking directly to the advisers at 37 Action Fraud, the national fraud reporting centre, by phoning 0300 123 2040. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday, 6th March 2017 - 8pm Village Hall Wine, AGM and Quiz It’s your opportunity to check how the WGHS is being run, elect the committee and ask any questions you may have. This is helped by a glass of wine (or something nonalcoholic). Following on will be THE QUIZ! Every year it is different, not all horticultural but plenty of other non horticultural questions. Someone on the Committee said it is “to test all your faculties” but that would be impossible in the time! Please come armed with your purse/wallet to get this year’s membership card and Schedule. In the Schedule for the August Show Class 184 is for the LARGEST SUNFLOWER HEAD to be grown by a young person/child. The seeds are FREE and will be distributed at the School, but there will be more seeds for those not at the WG School at the WG Shop. Helpful hint : sow by mid April to give the plant time to grow. Although it is some time away please be thinking about our Spring Plant Sale on Saturday May 6th. Please sow, pot up, divide or dig up what someone else may wish to grow. House 43 plants, garden bits and pieces/ equipment will be welcome. Vegetables are very much sought after indeed. The Plant Sale is a great way to help fund the Society’s expenditure. It enables us to keep membership costs so low as well as to help each other with gardening matters. People have been very generous with their help in getting so much together for the sale in the past few years. More on how to contribute nearer the time. Palm Sunday Procession – the annual procession will be held on Sunday 9th April 3pm from the Sacred Heart in Petworth. We’re praying for lovely April sunshine (not showers!) for this wonderful traditional event. WI Report A small but beautifully trained group met on the 2 nd February in the Village Hall to strut their stuff under the expert coaching of Sarah Mills who instructed us in the dancing of the Charleston. By the time she had finished we could all actually do a routine and are now taking bookings!! A great time was had by all. Our next meeting is on Thursday 2 nd March 2017 when BEAT, (Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team) will come and instruct us how to use the defibrillator (on the wall outside of the village hall), and other associated first aid skills. The Gardener’s Calendar

 Finish cutting back any dead foliage left on your perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth.  Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot.  Deadhead daffodils as the flowers finish and let the foliage die back naturally.  Dead-head Hydrangeas before new growth appears.  Cut off the old leaves of Hellebores to remove any foliar diseases and make the spring flowers more visible.  Towards the end of the month plant your chitted early potatoes outside in the ground.  Plant onions, shallots and garlic provided the soil isn't frozen or waterlogged. Alternatively plant into individual pots for transplanting outdoors later on when soil conditions are more favourable.  Start to sow vegetable seeds such as carrots, radishes and lettuce in greenhouse borders or outside under cloches.  Plant fruit trees and raspberry canes now.  Cut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new cane growth. Cut the tips of summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports; cut just above a bud.  Protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines from frost with horticultural fleece.  Mulch rhubarb with a thick layer of well-rotted manure to keep it healthy and reduce moisture loss through the soil. Take care not to cover the crown. You can also plant fresh rhubarb crowns now.  Covering your strawberries with a cloche will encourage earlier fruiting.

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for January was 97mm – somewhat drier than the 175mm of January a year ago and still drier than my 9 yr average. Hopefully no reader of Ad Vincula was at Cluannie Inn (Wester Ross) last month as they received a watery 226mm. Highest temperature was 14.5°C at Hawarden in Flintshire (for the second month running!). Coldest temp was recorded at Marham in Norfolk minus 13.4°C. The dullest January since 2002.
